Objective: Rotation work involves travelling to work in remote areas for a block of time and alternate with spending another block of time at home; such work arrangements have become common in the resources sector. The intermittent absence of workers from the home may adversely affect the health of the workers' families. This study synthesises research on mental and physical health outcomes in partners and children of rotation workers in the resources sector. Design: A systematic review was conducted. Studies were retrieved from PubMed, Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Scopus. Nineteen studies were included and findings were summarised narratively. Results: The impact of rotation work on the mental health and well-being of partners and children of rotation workers remains unclear. However, on days where workers are away, partners may experience greater loneliness and poorer sleep quality. Conclusion: Partners may benefit from support, particularly when they have younger children and/or their spouses first begin rotation work. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected working women's well-being in different ways due to contrasting national responses. This article focuses on the specific context of Singapore, which implemented differentiated rules for workers: essential workers continued to report to workplaces, while non-essential workers were required to work from home. This policy had far-reaching implications for working women, who are more likely than husbands to juggle paid work and household duties. The article uses longitudinal data collected in 2018 and during the pandemic in 2020, specifically during Singapore's lockdown period, to measure changes in 287 working women's self-reported levels of stress, fatigue, and quality of interpersonal relationships by essential worker status. While all workers were affected by the pandemic, female essential workers were more likely than their non-essential peers to report declines in stress levels from 2018 to 2020, and less likely to report changes in spousal relationships, both positive and negative. Findings suggest that the differences were driven by exposure to quarantine conditions faced by non-essential workers. Our results highlight the importance of policies supporting frontline workers and more gender-equitable labour market policies to support married women juggling the twin demands of employment and household responsibilities. From a humble experiment to tackle social problems, social enterprises (SEs) have transformed into key co-producers for a wide range of social services. However, despite an increasing interest in co-production, most SE studies in the field adopted a single-sided view of co-production, thereby limiting what co-production entails and how it works in SE. Drawing upon the New Public Governance (NPG) framework and an integrative view of co-production that embraces individual and collective action, we explored how the co-production process is enacted and designed from a service provider's perspective and presented qualitative insights from eight SEs in providing work-integration services for people with disabilities. Our findings revealed strategic, operational and identity dimensions of co-production in SE. We also showed the different roles that SEs and their stakeholders play in co-production and how these affect the processes. We offer a new contribution to SE co-production literature by highlighting a multi-dimensional co-production process model of SEs in their quest to deliver social services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article investigates the unique contribution of specific programme characteristics together with personal stigma, stigmatisation by the public, and claims stigma, to the non-take-up of targeted income support among Hong Kong older adults. Drawing on data from a sample of 3,299 Hong Kong older adults aged 65 or above, we find that between 11-14 per cent of eligible participants did not receive cash transfers from Normal and Higher Old Age Living Allowance (OALA) and old-age Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (old-age CSSA). By combining mainstream economic analysis with attempts to quantify welfare stigma (Baumberg, 2016) we find that transaction costs were most consistently and strongly related to non-take-up of targeted income support; non-take-up of old-age CSSA and Higher OALA but not Normal OALA varied with welfare stigma after controlling for personal and household characteristics of study participants. This article further adds to the literature by examining the effect of recent reforms to asset- and means-tested benefits for the same target population of older adults on take-up in the East Asian context. The article suggests that automatic switching of beneficiaries from Normal OALA to Higher OALA effectively facilitated higher take-up of the latter. Even when achievement outcomes are equal, some students of color still do not participate in advanced academic or gifted education programs. To better understand this phenomenon, researchers engaged in a research-practice partnership within the local community to explore the experiences of families of color and assess their needs pertaining to advanced learning opportunities for their children. Data were collected during two family outreach events using a semi-structured interview protocol with focus groups. Focus-group interviews were independently coded and analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings revealed challenges and barriers related to accessing enrichment and advanced academic learning opportunities. Some families discussed their personal experiences of racism, bias, and deficit thinking. Overall, themes illustrated how families of color believed they were perceived by educational practitioners and their desire for a sense of belonging and equitable access to high-quality academic programming for their children. Aims/Background: This research aimed to identify the sources of social support and its relationship with perinatal depression (PPD) during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Design/Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional study with a sample of 3,356 women during perinatal period living in Spain. We used five items from the Spanish version of the Coronavirus Perinatal Experiences – Impact Survey to assess the impact of COVID-19 on social support and, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale was used to assess depressive symptomatology. Results: The results obtained identified a possible relationship between seeking in-person support (OR = 0.51; 0.67, during pregnancy and after delivery respectively) and degree of feeling social support (OR = 0.77; 0.77) during the COVID-19 pandemic with a lower prevalence of depression. Otherwise, requiring the help of a mental health professional (OR = 2.92; 2.41) and weeks of confinement (OR = 1.03; 1.01) appeared to be associated with a higher prevalence of depression. During pregnancy, a possible association was found between the degree of concern about future changes in support and involvement of family and friends (OR = 1.75) with a higher prevalence of depression. On the other hand, in the postpartum period, there seems to be a relationship between seeking social support through social media (OR = 1.32) with a higher prevalence of depression and receiving support from friends (OR = 0.70) and health professionals (OR = 0.53) with a lower prevalence of depression. The tautological ring R ∗ (M) of a smooth manifold M is the ring of characteristic classes generated by the Miller–Morita–Mumford classes, and is often more accessible than the ring of all characteristic classes of smooth M-bundles. In this paper, we introduce a new method to obtain upper bounds on the Krull dimension of R ∗ (M) for manifolds homotopy equivalent to a fixed, simply connected Poincaré duality space by using recent progress in rational homotopy theory and the family signature theorem. Objective Background Method Results Conclusion Analyzing ethnographic data collected after welfare reform in the United States, this study explores the family‐level consequences of safety‐net administrative burdens.Administrative burdens reproduce racial inequality and have material, psychological, and temporal costs for individuals. Less attention has been paid to how such burdens impose costs not only for the person interfacing with the state but also their families. This study uses an “intersectional family justice” lens to (1) examine the full impact of administrative burdens more broadly, as one component of family burdens and (2) highlight the role of agency in families' heterogeneous, multi‐level response strategies.We conducted a team‐based, secondary analysis of 35 family profiles from a longitudinal ethnography detailing the perspectives and experiences of low‐income Latinx families with children from 1999 to 2002 at the San Antonio, Texas site of Welfare, Children, and Families: A Three‐City Study. Through multiple stages of coding, we examined how families experienced and responded to administrative burdens in safety‐net systems in the post‐welfare reform context.Families primarily faced two types of barriers when interfacing with safety‐net systems (system‐level and ideological) and engaged in two types of response strategies (individual‐level and network‐level). Both barriers and responses had reverberating implications for family well‐being and processes.Because safety‐net administrative burdens, often rooted in racialized and gendered logics of “deservingness,” can create substantial disruptions for navigating everyday family life, their costs are more fully understood not only as individual‐level burdens but as a family affair. Objective Background Method Results Conclusion This study investigates the effects of working from home (WFH) on both work‐to‐family conflict (WTFC) and family‐to‐work conflict (FTWC) among parents, and whether family demands and the COVID‐19 pandemic moderate these effects.The COVID‐19 pandemic saw a marked increase in the incidence of WFH in many countries, which many argue has been beneficial for families. Convincing evidence in support of this hypothesis, however, is scarce.Panel data from 19 waves of the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey (covering the period 2001 to 2021) are used to estimate fixed effects regression models of both FTWC and WTFC where the explanatory variable of interest is the share of usual weekly work hours worked from home. The sample is restricted to working parents aged between 18 and 64 years (9850 persons; 54,764 observations).For both genders, the level of WTFC declines with the proportion of time worked from home. By contrast, the association between WFH and FTWC differs between mothers and fathers, with FTWC lower for mothers but higher for fathers (and especially for single fathers and those with young children) when working mostly from home. These associations remained largely unchanged during the pandemic.WFH is particularly beneficial for mothers' reconciliation of work and family life but has ambivalent effects for fathers. Aim: This study explored the impact of different care modes on the outcome of hospitalized patients with acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) during hospitalization and 3 months after discharge. Methods: This was a prospective cohort study comparing the outcomes at hospitalization, at discharge, and at 3 months post discharge among AIS patients with different caregiving arrangements from 9, December 2022 to 20, August 2023. The general information questionnaire, Modified Barthel Index, Shortened General Comfort Questionnaire, Perceived Social Support scale, Herth Hope Index, modified Rankin scale and EQ‐5D‐5L were utilized for the investigation. Results: The psychological evaluation scores during hospitalization, including comfort, perceived social support, and hope, did not significantly differ between the two groups of AIS patients (p >.05). Moreover, there were no significant impacts observed in terms of length of stay (LOS) at the hospital or hospitalization expense (p >.05). The proportion of patients with intact functionality was greater in the family caregiver group 3 months after discharge (16.5%). However, when stratified based on prognosis, the difference in outcomes between the two groups of patients did not reach statistical significance (p >.05). The analysis of ADL, quality of life and stroke recurrence in 276 surviving ischaemic stroke patients 3 months post discharge indicated no differences between the two groups across all three aspects (p >.05). Conclusion: Older and divorced or widowed AIS patients tend to prefer professional caregivers. The psychological state during hospitalization, length of hospital stay and hospitalization expenses are not influenced by the caregiving model. Three months post discharge, a greater proportion of patients in the family caregiving group had intact mRS functionality, but this choice did not impact patient prognosis, stroke recurrence, quality of life or independence in ADL. The challenges faced by caregivers of people living with serious mental illness in Canada are well documented in the literature including emotional distress, financial strain, social isolation, and concerns about their physical health following the impact of caregiving. Peer support programs (including peer support groups) emerged as a promising method to attempt to address these challenges. While there is evidence on the positive impacts of peer support groups in providing support for caregivers, the mechanisms by which peer support groups operate and influence support for caregivers of people living with serious mental illness are less understood. This qualitative study took on a co-designed participatory research approach. Fifteen adult caregivers of people living with serious mental illness across Canada were engaged through key informant interviews that lasted for 45 – 60 min each. A thematic analysis was carried out to help understand the operational mechanisms of peer support groups in influencing support for caregivers. The key informant interviews allowed for the identification and description of the following operational mechanisms that influenced the support caregivers received from peer support groups: (1) Group dynamics; (2) Messaging/content; (3) Equity and inclusion, (4) Group philosophy; and (5) Privacy concerns. Findings from this study showed that caregivers identified a number of operational mechanisms of peer support groups that explained how they felt supported when they participated in peer support groups. Among other operational mechanisms, group dynamics in terms of the gathering of caregivers of different age brackets and varying caregiving experience negatively influenced the peer support experience of caregivers. This pointed to the need for group dynamics that consider close age ranges and similar caregiving experience during group meetings to enhance support for caregivers. Caregivers also identified a gap in equity and inclusion in peer support groups that could have otherwise enriched their experience and enhanced the support they looked to receive from the group. Practical examples to enhance equity and inclusion include promoting active listening, using inclusive language, encouraging diverse representation and asking for feedback from peer support group members. While peer support groups in Canada exist independently of one another, it may help to consolidate evidence-based recommendations in the operational mechanisms of these groups, for the benefit of caregivers who turn to these groups for support, having been left on their own by an otherwise fractured mental health system. Due to the difficulty in identifying and monitoring factors that cause hearing impairment during pregnancy, large numbers of new hearing‐impaired children are born every year. Children's hearing impairment can have an impact on all aspects of the family. Family education, as an important element of family function, plays a key role in the growth and development of hearing‐impaired children and in improving the interaction between hearing‐impaired children and their parents. Based on a qualitative study in central China, this article examines the current situation and dilemmas of family education for hearing‐impaired children. Results show that families of hearing‐impaired children generally have a tendency to avoid family education responsibilities, as demonstrated by the lack of family roles, low participation in specific family education, absence of communication and care functions and a laissez‐faire approach to bringing up their children. This evasive tendency cannot simply be attributed to parental irresponsibility; rather, it is the result of a combination of four factors and is closely related to insufficient social support. In the short term, a two‐pronged approach is needed: strengthening the government's responsibility and rendering assistance for families with hearing‐impaired children on the one hand, and establishing reliable links between home and school to provide professional support on the other. In the long run, it is necessary to build up a social support mechanism with social work intervention. This paper puts forward the need for collaboration among multiple parties and a family‐centred assistance model to promote a shift from the tendency towards evasion to active assumption of family responsibility. To investigate the prevalence and the factors associated with experimentation and use of e-cigarettes. Cross-sectional study. Cross-sectional analysis of data from the National School Health Survey (PeNSE 2019), with students attending elementary school and high school in Brazil. Two outcomes were investigated: experimentation and last 30-day use of e-cigarettes. Potential exposures included family and adolescents' socio-demographic, mental health, and behavioral characteristics. Adjusted prevalence ratios (PR) were obtained by Poisson regression with robust variance. 133,237 adolescents aged ≥13 years were included. Prevalence of experimentation and last 30-day use was higher in males (20.7 % and 4.1 %, respectively) than in females (15.4 % and 2.6 %, respectively). The higher PR were with ever use of hookah in males (PR = 3.34 for e-cigarettes experimentation and PR = 4.05 for last 30-day use) and females (PR = 3.26 for experimentation and PR = 4.14 for last 30-day use). For males who ever used alcoholic beverages, the PR for e-cigarettes experimentation ranged from 2.86 to 3.18, and the PR for last 30-day use ranged from 3.09 to 3.39, depending upon the age of first alcoholic beverage experimentation. Among the females who ever used alcoholic beverages, PR for experimentation ranged from 3.46 to 4.31 and PR for last 30-day use ranged from 2.44 to 4.09. About a quarter of school age adolescents had already tried e-cigarettes and 3.4 % used e-cigarettes in the prior 30 days. To explore the client acceptability and perceived impact of pilot school-based food pantries (SBFPs) and compare client preference between SBFPs and BackPack programs (locally termed Sack Pack) in 3 rural Tennessee elementary schools. A mixed-method design, including cross-sectional surveys (n = 25) and semistructured interviews (n = 11), was used to assess and compare program acceptability. Client satisfaction was uniformly positive for both programs; however, a majority preferred the food quantity (84%), nutritional value (76%), variety (68%), quality (68%), and convenience (64%) of SBFPs. Clients reported feeding more household members with SBFPs (3.9 ± 0.9 vs 3.0 ± 1.0) compared with Sack Pack. When exploring SBFPs vs Sack Pack , 3 primary themes emerged from interviews and were supported by survey data: preferences for different program elements; food acceptability; and SBFP impact and expansion. Findings support continuing SBFPs in rural schools. Studies on expanding the use of trusted and accessible schools as potential healthful food distribution sites are warranted to support broader community food access in rural areas. This article considers the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) newspaper, the Christian Recorder's publication of the formerly enslaved "Information Wanted" advertisements through the mid-1860s to turn of the century as a means through which the AME promoted the ideal of the "family" as positive models for Blacks themselves, also challenging white prejudices concerning family life of the formerly enslaved. Conversely, the formerly enslaved used them as a public forum to narrate, and perhaps begin to make sense of, their own stories of loss and longing and articulating white southern responsibility for the heartache and traumas of slavery that they had caused. Aphasia, a communication disability prevalent among stroke survivors, significantly impacts psychosocial well-being and quality of life. Intensive Comprehensive Aphasia Programs (ICAPs) provide intensive and comprehensive treatment, incorporating individual and group therapy, patient and family education, and technology utilization. Despite positive outcomes, global implementation of ICAPs remains limited. In Brazil, preliminary evidence supports the development of intensive and comprehensive aphasia programs, such as the Brazilian Aphasia House—a program inspired by the successful Aphasia House model in the United States. The Brazilian Aphasia House offers personalized and intensive therapy in a simulated domestic environment, encompassing individual and group therapy sessions, and patient and family education, with the goal of enhancing functional communication skills and overall quality of life. Operating as a teaching clinic within a public university, it also serves as a training ground for future therapists to expand ICAP availability in Brazil. Challenges in implementing ICAPs in Brazil include socioeconomic barriers, limited public aphasia awareness, a shortage of specialized professionals, transportation, and session costs. Sustainable implementation requires committed leadership and financial resourcing, with involvement from public institutions and universities. By increasing awareness and nationwide implementation of ICAPs, access to aphasia rehabilitation services can be improved, potentially leading to better outcomes for individuals with aphasia and their caregivers. The Brazilian Aphasia House serves as an exemplar of an ICAP, offering intensive and personalized therapy to enhance communication abilities and promote social participation for people with aphasia. Using invariance testing techniques, this study investigated the validity of the Revised Family Communication Patterns (RFCP) scale across different racial groups in the United States. Data was collected from 644 individuals, with an even split between participants in four primary racial groups: Hispanic, Asian, Black, and White. Results revealed several inconsistencies in how the RFCP instrument functions across racial groups. Namely, the conformity subscale failed to establish metric or scalar invariance, which raises concerns about how the measure should be used in future research, especially with regard to within-group differences. Introduction: Timely diagnosis is critical for persons with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) to ensure they receive adequate services; however, timely diagnosis may be prevented by a person's English language skills. The purpose of this integrative review was to understand how limited English proficiency (LEP) impacts older Latino's ability to access a timely ADRD diagnosis. Methods: Whittemore and Knafl's methodological approach guided the review. Searches in five databases yielded 12 articles for inclusion. Results: Lack of culturally congruent health care systems, health care providers, and knowledge of ADRD resulted in delays in obtaining a timely ADRD diagnosis among older Latinos with LEP. Discussion: Latinos with LEP and risk for ADRD benefit from language assistance and support in navigating the health care system. Nurses must be advocates, even when a language barrier is present, and recognize that interpreters are not a single source solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

How does one's connectedness in their social relationships affect their health? For a long time, this question has piqued the interest of sociologists. From Durkheim's theory of suicide to recent empirical studies in medical sociology, the positive association between social integration and well-being has been well established. In this paper, we revisited this topic by focusing on how different sources of social contact is associated with self-rated health in Turkey. To do so, we examined how contact with a close friend, a parent, a sibling, and other family member – outside of one's nuclear family – compares in terms of their association with self-rated health by using ISSP Social Network Data. We found that frequency of contact with a parent and other family member showed statistically significant and positive associations with self-rated health in some models, which was not the case for a sibling. In the full model accounting for all contact variables, however, only the frequency of contact with a close friend had a statistically significant and positive association with self-rated health. This study aims to start a discussion about the growing importance of non-kin ties in people's lives in Turkey despite the increasing familialism in Turkish politics and social policymaking. Policymakers and social workers tackling issues such as social isolation, social exclusion, and loneliness in Turkey should consider the prevalence of non-kin networks on individuals' well-being. This paper offers a historical review of major milestones in the development of the field of family science. Employing eight criteria necessary for a discipline, I acknowledge key historical accomplishments as well as more recent developments to assess the present strength and vitality of the discipline of family science. After looking back at the past, and assessing the present, I offer a few suggestions for future directions in further bolstering the field with the hope that it prompts additional lines of thought and action. The relationship between family poverty and children's psychological distress is well-established, often assessed through income-based measures. However, a child-centric perspective is lacking, particularly regarding the roles of teacher neglect and peer bullying as potential mediators, and the impact of cultural differences. This study explores how familial poverty affects psychological distress, examines teacher neglect and peer bullying as mediators, and assesses the moderating role of culture. Analyzing a global sample of 16,860 ten-year-olds from the International Survey of Children's Well-Being, the findings reveal a positive correlation between poverty and psychological distress. Teacher neglect and peer bullying partially mediate this link. Moreover, the association between teacher neglect and psychological distress is stronger for children in collectivist cultures, while the association between peer bullying and psychological distress is stronger for children in individualistic cultures. In this article we study some structures related to a family of arbeli possessing a common incircle. The structures comprise two perspective triangles which we characterize. They comprise also a parabola carrying the vertices of one of these triangles, and a rectangular hyperbola carrying the perspectors of the triangles. In addition we show that an arbitrary triangle defines in an intrinsic manner a unique arbelos and examine some structures related to sequences of arbeli of this family resulting by a standard process. In this study, we examined the impact of online learning on children's educational progress during the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly focusing on migrant children attending a primary school in Hangzhou, China. Through a combination of student and parent questionnaires (n = 537) and in-depth interviews with teachers and parents, we found that migrant children faced challenges such as poor connectivity, inadequate equipment, and lack of parental supervision when participating in online teaching. These challenges were exacerbated by pre-existing digital disparities and economic insecurities brought about by the pandemic, which further marginalised socially excluded families. As a result, children's ability to benefit from online instruction was compromised, highlighting the urgent need for remedial assistance and support for these vulnerable populations. This study explored young children's mental health trajectories during the pandemic (May 2020 to April 2021) as well as associations with family functioning (i.e., cohesion, conflict, chaos, and routines) using data reported by 204 parents (children Mage 5.49; 45% girls, 90% White). Children's internalizing problems decreased early on with the onset of the pandemic, but then leveled off, while no change in externalizing problems was found. Family conflict and chaos were significantly associated with internalizing and externalizing problems at the within‐ and between‐family level, when examined independently. When family‐level factors were evaluated simultaneously, family conflict emerged as a robust risk factor. Longitudinal study of associations between family‐level emotion socialization and adolescent adjustment is limited. When American children (53.5% girls) were in second grade (N = 213; Mage = 7.98; data collected 2002–2003), mothers and fathers (79.8% of mothers and 74.2% of fathers were White) reported on their reactions to children's emotions; in seventh, eighth, and ninth grade (Mage = 13.03, 14.17, 15.29, respectively; data collected 2007–2010), adolescents, mothers, and fathers reported on adolescent internalizing and externalizing symptoms. Four family‐level profiles of reactions were identified. Profile differences emerged, suggesting that the emotion dismissing profile was longitudinally associated with elevated adolescent internalizing and externalizing symptoms and that fathering may especially foster child adjustment for families in a divergence profile. Background: Despite the remarkable advancements in the use of embryo donation, concerns have arisen regarding its potential effects on the psychological well-being of children conceived through this assisted reproductive technology and their parent-child relationships. The aim of the study is to evaluate children's psychological adjustment and parenting style in families with donor-conceived children and compare them with the normal population. Materials and Methods: A historical cohort study was conducted to assess the psychological adjustment of 31 children aged 3 to 7 years born via embryo donation and to compare the results with those of 30 age-matched children from families who conceived naturally using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. The sample size was determined using G power, and the samples were selected using a convenient sampling method. Parenting styles within these families were also evaluated using the Baumrind Parenting Styles Inventory through clinical interviews. Results: Although 8 out of 31 children born through embryo donation (25.8%) and 3 out of 30 children from families with natural conception exhibited psychological maladjustment, this difference was not statistically significant (P=0.249). Furthermore, there were no significant differences in parenting styles between the two groups (P values for permissive, authoritarian, and authoritative parenting styles were 0.424, 0.656, and 0.219, respectively). Conclusion: The lack of genetic parent-child relationships does not seem to be a dominant factor affecting the psychological adjustment of children or parenting styles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the relative effectiveness of immediate and delayed corrective feedback on the acquisition of -ing / -ed participial adjectives by Spanish English-as-a-foreign-language learners in video-based computer-mediated communication. Fifty-two participants took part in a communicative task in one of four groups (two experimental and two control). The immediate-feedback group received explicit corrective feedback during the task whereas the delayed-feedback group received the feedback 24 hours later by means of an edited video recording of the interaction. The effects of the feedback were measured through an oral production task and an untimed grammaticality judgment test. Although the results showed no differences between the two feedback timing groups and control participants on the grammaticality judgment test, both feedback groups outperformed the control group on the oral production task without showing statistically significant timing effects. We calculate murmuration densities for two families of Dirichlet characters. The first family contains complex Dirichlet characters normalized by their Gauss sums. Integrating the first density over a geometric interval yields a murmuration function compatible with experimental observations. The second family contains real Dirichlet characters weighted by a smooth function with compact support. We show that the second density exhibits a universality property analogous to Zubrilina's density for holomorphic newforms, and it interpolates the phase transition in the the |$1$| -level density for a symplectic family of |$L$| -functions. The crisis of disappearances in Mexico started in 2006, when then‐president Felipe Calderón launched the war on drugs framed by a military perspective. Since then, more than 111,000 disappearances have been reported nationwide. Faced with this panorama of violence and uncertainty, a bureaucratic body has emerged which attempts to manage the search by, and mourning of, families who are still waiting for the return of their loved ones. This article addresses the way in which the official investigation carried out by the authorities plays a central role in the search process. Through the voices of thirteen mothers whose daughters and sons have disappeared, the investigation files adopt the category of a person‐object, which represents a type of presence of the victim. Thus, one of the central arguments is based on a reflection of how missing persons, through objects, continue to participate both in the daily lives of their relatives and in claims for justice against the Mexican state apparatus. Using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth-1979, we used sequence analysis to chart couples' work schedules and family configuration clusters between ages 22 and 53 (n = 5263) to examine the association between family demands from marriage and childrearing and work arrangements between partners via a life course perspective by focusing on nonstandard work schedules, a vital indicator of precarious employment. We also explored whether such an association differs by race–ethnicity. Our sequence analyses uncovered six joint work schedule arrangements and six family configurations between ages 22 and 53, demonstrating the heterogeneity of family and work trajectories over working lives. We found married couples with two children later in life had relatively stable work patterns, whereas married couples with three or more children had the most diversified work patterns between ages 22 and 53. Furthermore, non-Hispanic Blacks were more likely to have relatively vulnerable work patterns than their non-Hispanic White counterparts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using data from the Dynamics of Social Life During COVID-19 Survey (DSL-COVID), we examine dating and romantic relationship interest among singles amid a global pandemic and loneliness epidemic. This study provides a gendered life course perspective to understanding the heterogeneity of singles' low romantic interest. We find larger gender differences among the previously married than never married singles. In addition, we document a stronger age gradient for single women than men in low romantic interest. We demonstrate that previously married single men's romantic interest may be more responsive to loneliness than that of single women. These results suggest that lonely single men express the strongest desires to seek romance, net of controls, while single women express lower romantic interest. Overall, we argue for the possibility that a non-trivial segment of singles may exhibit low romantic interest, and their inclusion is important for social science research on union and family formation. The present study investigated topics of conflict across multiple family subsystems (i.e., the romantic couple, parent–adolescent, and parent–younger child) in present-day American families. Research questions were addressed from a nationwide sample of 593 adults parenting at least one child. Findings highlight the heightened severity of conflict in the couple relationship relative to equivalent topics appearing in parent–child subsystems as well as topics with greater conflict severity between parents and adolescents (e.g., being distant) and topics with greater severity between parents and younger children (e.g., food/picky eating). Salient sources of conflict in present-day families (e.g., technology/phone use in the parent–adolescent subsystem, mood and tempers in all subsystems) were also identified. Findings from the study illustrate ways in which conflict topics appear similarly and differently across distinct family subsystems as well as which conflict topics have changed in families over time and those that have remained constant. The aim of this study was to examine potential differences in coparenting quality during the COVID-19 pandemic among mothers and fathers using an embedded mixed methods approach. The objectives were to compare mothers' and fathers' scores on the Coparenting Relationship Scale among 150 mother–father dyads, and to examine mothers' and fathers' perceptions of how COVID-19 influenced their coparenting quality using thematic analysis of 159 mothers' and 75 fathers' responses to an open-ended coparenting survey question. While total coparenting quality scores did not differ among mothers and fathers, fathers had significantly higher scores on the division of labour and endorsement subscales, and mothers had significantly higher scores on the undermining subscale. The qualitative thematic analysis identified five key themes: gendered changes to division of labour, increased hostility, increased teamwork, less alone time, and increased stress. Parents of color are underrepresented in adoption research and as adoptive parents. Consequently, there is limited understanding of racial disparities in socioeconomic status (SES) among adoptive parents. We test two hypotheses: (1) racial disparities in the United States will be reflected in the adoption community (social stratification) and (2) adoptive parents of color may need to overcome additional barriers to adoption, thus having higher SES than White adoptive parents (overcoming barriers). Using 2019 American Community Survey data, we predict adoptive parents' (n = 65,556) SES by race and then compare the SES of adoptive and non-adoptive parents of the same race. Across-race results support a social stratification perspective—White adoptive parents have higher SES than adoptive parents of color. Within-race results, alternatively, show that adoptive parents have higher SES than non-adoptive parents across racial groups. Despite the clear efficacy and appeal of naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions for families of young children, they are often difficult for families to access due to the limited availability of trained service providers. In recent years, telehealth has emerged as an effective tool for overcoming issues related to access, especially in rural and underserved communities. However, while telehealth offers a strategy to connect with families, it does not address the limited availability of trained providers. In this article, we provide an overview of a statewide model developed to increase access to naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions for families while building the capacity of early intervention providers. Through this model, expert consultants connect to caregivers and providers via telehealth to provide information and coaching over a limited series of visits. Collectively, child, caregiver, and provider outcomes support the effectiveness, acceptability, and feasibility of this model while demonstrating that services can be provided successfully to diverse participants. Many families seek access to evidence-based therapy to support their child's learning. Naturalistic developmental behavioral intervention is a set of practices that use a child's natural motivation and interest to teach skills in everyday routines. Many families find naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions appealing and they have been proven to be effective. However, families may not be able to enroll in naturalistic developmental behavioral intervention–based programs due to the limited availability of trained service providers. Telehealth is the use of technology to engage with care providers, including doctors and therapists. Telehealth is an effective tool for improving access to services, especially for people in rural and underserved communities. Telehealth offers a way for providers to connect with families but it does not address the low numbers of trained providers. In this article, we share a statewide model developed to increase access to naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions for families while increasing training opportunities for early intervention providers. Through this model, expert consultants worked with caregivers and providers via telehealth for a brief series of visits. During these visits, consultants taught caregivers and providers strategies based in naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions. Objective: Describe how sports medicine clinicians support decision making about sport participation after concussion recovery with adolescent patients and their parents. Specific areas of inquiry related to how clinicians framed the decision, what factors they considered in how they approached the decision process, and how they navigated discordance within families. Design: Qualitative study. Setting: Tertiary care sports medicine clinics at 4 children's hospitals in the United States. Participants: Individual interviews were conducted with 17 clinicians practicing in sports medicine settings. Interventions: N/A. Main Outcome Measures: Semi-structured interviews explored clinician approaches to supporting decision making, with the question guide informed by components of the Ottawa Decision Support Framework. Results: Clinicians routinely incorporated aspects of shared decision making (SDM) into their conversations with families. This included ensuring all parties were informed about risk and aligned behind a shared value of adolescent well-being. Mediation strategies were used to manage discordance between adolescents and their parents, and between parents. These strategies aimed to facilitate a decision that was adolescent centered. When clinicians believed that there was a medical benefit to modifying the adolescent's sport participation practices, or when they did not believe the athlete was psychologically ready to return to the sport in which they were injured, they initiated conversations about alternative activities. In such situations, they used persuasive communication practices to encourage families to strongly consider this option. Conclusion: The strengths and strategies used by sports medicine clinicians in this study provide a foundation for guidance or intervention development aimed at supporting SDM after concussion with adolescents and their families. Screen products are becoming increasingly indispensable in modern family life, yet their effects on developmental outcomes have remained unclear. This study examined the specific ways in which the techno-microsystem, consisting of children's screen use and digital-related parenting, influenced behavior problems. A socially diverse sample of Chinese caregivers of 2- to 6-year-olds completed online questionnaires three times during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using an autoregressive latent trajectory model with structured residuals and a cross-lagged panel model with multiverse analysis, we evaluated the within-person and between-person effects of the techno-microsystem on behavior problems, respectively. Our results revealed: (i) active mediation predicted fewer behavior problems over time; (ii) restrictive mediation was longitudinally related to reduction in children's screen use; and (iii) caregivers' and children's screen use covaried but were not predictive of behavior problems. This study examined the home literacy practices of bilingual families. We were specifically interested in the literacy practices families developed to answer the challenge of biliteracy. Through the home visits and supplying high quality bilingual books, we listened, observed, and gained a deeper understanding of the children and their families which allowed us and educators reading this piece to make connections between children?s home literacy practices and literacy practices in the classroom. After discussing the use of bilingual books, the following four themes emerged from the data: families negotiating biliteracy using bilingual books, the role of Spanish, siblings and literacy learning, families negotiating resources for literacy and interacting with schools. It is natural to generalize the online k -Server problem by allowing each request to specify not only a point p, but also a subset S of servers that may serve it. To date, only a few special cases of this problem have been studied. The objective of the work presented in this paper has been to more systematically explore this generalization in the case of uniform and star metrics. For uniform metrics, the problem is equivalent to a generalization of Paging in which each request specifies not only a page p, but also a subset S of cache slots, and is satisfied by having a copy of p in some slot in S. We call this problem Slot-Heterogenous Paging. In realistic settings only certain subsets of cache slots or servers would appear in requests. Therefore we parameterize the problem by specifying a family S ⊆ 2 [ k ] of requestable slot sets, and we establish bounds on the competitive ratio as a function of the cache size k and family S : If all request sets are allowed ( S = 2 [ k ] \ { ∅ } ), the optimal deterministic and randomized competitive ratios are exponentially worse than for standard Paging ( S = { [ k ] } ). As a function of | S | and k, the optimal deterministic ratio is polynomial: at most O (k 2 | S |) and at least Ω (| S |) . For any laminar family S of height h, the optimal ratios are O(hk) (deterministic) and O (h 2 log k) (randomized). The special case of laminar S that we call All-or-One Paging extends standard Paging by allowing each request to specify a specific slot to put the requested page in. Objectives: Using "digital inequality" as a conceptual framework, this study evaluates the feasibility and usability of a technology-delivered intervention (an "app") for Alzheimer's and related dementia family caregivers. Time for Living and Caring (TLC) is an on-line intervention that provides virtual coaching and self-administered education and resources. Methods: A sample of family caregivers (n = 163) used the tool for 16 weeks, which included completing the Computer Proficiency Questionnaire (CPQ-12) at baseline. Analyses investigate the relationship between age, CPQ scores, intervention use, appraisal, and caregiver outcomes. Results: Age was inversely associated with CPQ; however, CPQ scores did not have a significant relationship with participant's self-perceived benefits or intervention appraisal. Computer Proficiency Questionnaire scores provided insight regarding research feasibility, with lower scores associated with greater odds of discontinuing engagement. Discussion: CPQ-12 scores can be used as a screening tool to identify those who may need additional support to engage with and benefit from technology-delivered interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The Language ENvironment Analysis (LENA) technology uses automated speech processing (ASP) algorithms to estimate counts such as total adult words and child vocalizations, which helps understand children's early language environment. This ASP has been validated in North American English and other languages in predominantly monolingual contexts but not in a multilingual context like India. Thus, the current study aims to validate the classification accuracy of the LENA algorithm specifically focusing on speaker recognition of adult segments (AdS) and child segments (ChS) in a sample of bi/ multilingual families from India. Method: Thirty neurotypical children between 6 and 24 months (M = 12.89, SD = 4.95) were recruited. Participants were growing up in bi/multilingual environment hearing a combination of Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi, and/or English. Daylong audio recordings were collected using LENA and processed using the ASP to automatically detect segments across speaker categories. Two human annotators manually annotated -900 min (37,431 segments across speaker categories). Performance accuracy (recall and precision) was calculated for AdS and ChS. Results: The recall and precision for AdS were 0.62 (95% confidence interval [CI] [0.61, 0.63]) and 0.83 (95% CI [0.8, 0.83]), respectively. This indicated that 62% of the segments identified as AdS by the human annotator were also identified as AdS by the LENA ASP algorithm and 83% of the segments labeled by the LENA ASP as AdS were also labeled by the human annotator as AdS. Similarly, the recall and precision for ChS were 0.65 (95% CI [0.64, 0.66]) and 0.55 (95% CI [0.54, 0.56]), respectively. Conclusions: This study documents the performance of the ASP in correctly classifying speakers as adult or child in a sample of families from India, indicating recall and precision that is relatively low. This study lays the groundwork for future investigations aiming to refine the algorithm models, potentially facilitating more accurate performance in bi/multilingual societies like India. It is well recognized and codified into law that families are an important part of early childhood evaluations; how families are included in evaluations in practice is less clear. To learn about family involvement, a nationally distributed survey focused on early childhood professionals' (n = 1,118) use of family-centered practices before, during, and after the initial evaluation for early intervention (EI) and preschool special education. A mixed methods design was utilized to explore how professionals reported to involve families before, during, and after initial evaluations. Results varied for professionals involved in initial evaluations for EI versus preschool special education. Qualitative analyses revealed the challenges professionals identified when attempting to engage families in the initial evaluation process. Background: Patient safety culture is crucial for improving health care quality, however, there is no consensus on its definition. Purpose: This study aimed to clarify and update the concept of patient safety culture. Methods: We employed Norris' 6-step concept clarification method. The content was organized through a scoping review of 4 databases. Twelve health professionals participated in focus groups and 10 experts participated in content validation. The content validity coefficient (CVC) was calculated for agreement between experts. Results: Three patient safety culture domains were identified: organizational, professional, and patient and family participation. The experts rated the definitions favorably, with high CVC scores (>0.87), indicating good agreement. The operational definitions were reduced from 76 to 54 items after expert evaluation. Conclusion: An updated definition of patient safety culture is provided, which can inform development of assessment instruments by managers and health care professionals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
