Abstract: In 1996 LEP ran at a centre-of-mass energy of 161~GeV, just above the threshold of W-pair production. DELPHI accumulated data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9.93 {\mathrm{~pb^{-1}}}$, and observed 29 events that are considered as candidates for W-pair production. From these, a cross-section for the doubly resonant $e^+e^-\to\mathrm{WW}$ process of $3.67~^{+0.97}_{-0.85} \pm 0.19{\mathrm{~pb}}$ has been measured. Within the Standard Model, this cross-section corresponds to a mass of the W-boson of ${\mathrm{80.40~\pm~0.44~(stat.)~\pm~0.09~(syst.) ~\pm 0.03~(LEP)~GeV}}/c^2$. Alternatively, if $m_{\mathrm{W}}$ is held fixed at its current value determined by other experiments, the observed cross-section is used to obtain limits on trilinear ${\mathrm{WWV (V \equiv \gamma, Z)}}$ couplings.

Abstract: Results are presented onK + p andK − p elastic scattering at 32.1 GeV/c in the |t| interval 0.06–1.4 GeV2. The samples contain approximately 15,000 events each and are obtained in the MIRABELLE bubble chamber at the Serpukhov accelerator. The |t| distributions are parametrized by quadratic exponential formsdσ/dt=A exp (bt+ct 2). The total elastic cross sections, obtained by integrating the fitted distributions, are (2.39±0.07) mb and (2.57±0.10) mb inK + p andK − p interactions, respectively. A cross-over between theK + p andK − p differential cross sections is found at |t c |=0.17±0.02 GeV2. The hypothesis of geometric scaling becomes valid somewhere between 32 and 70 GeV/c forK + p interactions, and is trivially verified forK − p scattering. Finally, an impact parameter analysis of the difference betweenK − p andK + p elastic amplitudes is presented.

Abstract: Multiplicity distributions, observed inK + interactions with Al and Au nuclei at 250 GeV/c incident momentum are presented. They are analyzed in the framework of multiple collisions of the incident particle inside a nucleus. The probability distribution of the number of grey tracks is well described by the model of Andersson et al., if a negative binomial distribution is assumed for the distribution of the number of grey protons produced per elementary collision instead of the usual geometrical distribution. The analysis of the average and dispersion of the charge multiplicity distribution supports the validity of the multiple collision model, including results on correlations between forward and backward multiplicities.

Abstract: Production of Σ ∗− and Ξ ∗− antibaryon resonances in K+ fragmentation processes is observed by studying inclusive λ π + and λ K + invariant mass distributions in 32 GeV/c K+p interactions. A possible Ξ ∗− state is reported with a mass of 2137±4 MeV and width ≲20 MeV. Signals are observed at λ K + masses of 2240, 2380 and 2540 MeV, which correspond to previously observed Ξ ∗− states. Evidence is presented for a low-mass λ p enhancement around 2145 MeV.

Abstract: Results are presented on an analysis of the reaction K+p → K+(pπ+π−). In I-spin of the low-mass pπ+π− enhancement is shown to be 12 and the cross section for production of pπ+π− states with mass less than 1.7 GeV is shown to be essentially independent of beam momentum. The slopes of the t distributions for various pπ+π− mass slices are determined. These results, and those from moments analyses of the pπ+π− system, are consistent with production via pomeron exchange. A partial-wave analysis, carried out with the assumption of pπ+π− production by pomeron exchange gives the contributions of the various JP states for Δπ, pϵ and pϱ decay modes of the pπ+π− system. The peak near a pπ+π− mass of 1.4 GeV is shown to be mainly Δπ in a 32− (L3 = 0) state. The peak near 1.7 GeV is about 50% Δπ and 50% pϵ. The 32− (L = 2) Δπ and 32− (L = 1) pϵ states both contribute to this peak, but 52+ (L = 1) Δπ is not strong, contrary to what might be expected.

Abstract: Azimuthal distributions between all possible particle pairs are studied in the reaction K + p → K + p2( π + π − ) at 16 GeV/ c . It is shown that the hypothesis of uncorrelated transverse momenta at fixed rapidities of the final-state particles, is sufficient to describe the main features of the data. An interesting exception occurs for identical particle pairs where a genuine short-range correlation, attributed to Bose-Einstein symmetrization, is observed. The correlation length of this effect is shown to be related to the impact parameter distribution of the produced pions.

Abstract: A test of factorization is made using data on the inclusive reactions pp → Λ + X++ at 19 GeV/c and K+p → Λ + X++ at 16 GeV/c incident momentum. In these reactions Λ production occurs dominantly via proton fragmentation and, in addition, ab c is exotic in both cases. The comparison of the structure functions on the Chew-Low plot shows that the factorization hypothesis is satisfied at the ∼10% level when the momentum transfer from the proton to the Λ is less than 1 (GeV/c)2.

Abstract: We present final results on inclusive production ofK*+(890),K*+(1430) andK*−(890) in$\bar K^ + p$ interactions at 32 GeV/c, based on a statistics of ∼27 events/μb. Total cross sections,pT-andx-dependence of inclusive distributions are compared with experiments at other energies and with the Lund fragmentation model. Spin density matrix elements of theK*+(890) are also discussed. The results suggest that “recombination” of both initial state valence quarks$\bar s$ andu of theK+ intoK*+(890), responsible in the Lund model for ∼45% of theK*+(890) cross section, is strongly suppressed.

Abstract: The inclusive reaction K+p → K0X is studied at 5, 8.2 and 16 GeV/c. The inclusive cross sections as well as the inclusive transverse and longitudinal distributions are given. The energy dependence of the structure function in the proton fragmentation region is found to be consistent with s−1-behaviour indicating the presence of f′ - ϕ exchange in the missing mass channel, with a relative contribution of 50–70%.

Abstract: We present the first spin-parity analysis of the K + K + K − ) system produced in the reaction K + p → K + K + K − p, and show that the general features of this system resemble those of the (ππ + π − ) and Kπ + π − ) systems produced in the reactions π (K)p → π (K) π + π − p. There is a low mass enhancement, (47 ± 11)% of which corresponds to 1 + states decaying to Ko. At higher (K + K + K − ) masses 2 − → Kf′ becomes increasingly significant and at all masses there is a 0 − contribution of roughly 30%.

Abstract: A comparison of the reactions K±p → K±(Δ++π−) at 8.25 GeV/c in the proton diffraction region is presented. The Δ++π− mass distributions, the decay angular distributions of the Δ++π− systems and two-dimensional (cos Θ, φ) plots in the s and t-channel systems are discussed in detail. No significant difference between K+ and K− distributions is observed for masses of the K±π− systems bigger than 1.6 GeV. The evidence for resonance interpretation of the low-mass Δ++π− enhancements is presented with an estimate of their production cross section. The contribution of the Deck type π-exchange in the diffraction-like production of the Δ++π− system is found to be comparable to the resonance production, while the contribution of baryon exchange Deck mechanism seems to be small.

Abstract: The production properties ofKs0,$\bar \Lambda$ andK+p interactions at 32 GeV/c are investigated using the final statistics of the experiment. We present total and semi-inclusive cross sections and aver-age multiplicities. Estimates are given of the diffractive dissociation contributions to total and differential cross sections. Thex-,pT−, and transverse mass dependence of inclusive and semi-inclusive distributions is discussed as well as properties of “prompt”Ks0's. The ratio of “prompt”K890+ (K8900) to “prompt”K0 cross sections is measured to be 1.03±0.12 (0.98±0.17). From a comparison of$\bar \Lambda$ production inK±p interactions at 32 GeV/c, we estimate a strange sea-quark suppression of 0.26 ±0.02. The double differential cross sections ofKs0's is studied as a function of Feynman-x andpT2, and a Triple-Regge fit performed. The data are compared in detail to versions of the Lund-model for low-pT hadronic collisions.

Abstract: The average charged particle multiplicity, 〈 n ch ( M X 2 )〉, in the reaction K + p→K o X ++ is studied as a function of the mass squared, M X 2 , of the recoil system X and also as a function of the K o transverse momentum, p T , at incident momenta of 5.0, 8.2 and 16.0 GeV/ c . The complete data samples yield distributions which are not independent of c.m. energy squared, s , They exhibit a linear dependence on log ( M X 2 X / M o 2 )[ M o 2 =1 GeV 2 ] with a change in slope occurring for M X 2 ≈ s /2, and do not agree with the corresponding distributions of 〈 n ch 〉 as a function of s for K + p inelastic scattering. Sub-samples of the data for which K o production via beam fragmentation, central production and target fragmentation are expected to be the dominant mechanisms show that, within error, the distribution of 〈 n ch ( M X 2 )〉 versus M X 2 is independent of incident momentum for each sub-sample separately. In particular in the beam fragmentation region the 〈 n ch ( M X 2 )〉 versus M X 2 distribution agrees rather well with that of 〈 n ch 〉 versus s for inelastic K + p interactions. The latter result agrees with recent results on the reactions pp → pX and π − p → pX in the NAL energy range. Evidence is presented for the presence of different production mechanisms in these separate regions.

Total production cross sections are given for three baryon resonances, five vector and three 2 + tensor mesons. Abstract: Inclusive production of Λ and Λ in K+ p interactions is studied at incident momenta of 8.2 and 16.0 GeV/c. Cross sections and single-particle distributions are presented, the correlation between longitudinal and transverse momentum is investigated, and the dependence of average charge multiplicity on missing mass measured. For Λ production, early scaling is observed in the target fragmentation region when the data are presented in terms of (M2-Mth2)/s and t, where Mth is the threshold value of the missing mass M. Furthermore, a triple-Regge analysis in these variable yields an effective exchange trajectory which passes through the K, Q and L mesons. There is evidence for beam fragmentation in Λ and Λ production, but the contributions seem not to be dominant in the fragmentation region. Nevertheless, the parameter values in a triple-Regge description are estimated, and together with those for target fragmentation in Λ production, provide a complete description of the fragmentation contributions to the two reactions. Integration of the resultant distribution functions over the complete Chew-Low plot yields fragmentation cross sections increasing approximately as log s; in addition the observed features of the x, pL and pT2 projections and of the pL-pT correlation are well-described in the fragmentation regions. Central production contributions are isolated by subtracting the calculated fragmentation distributions

Abstract: Results are presented on two-particle inclusive production inK + p interactions at 32 GeV/c. We study thex 1,2=x 1+x 2 dependence of invariant structure functions of (ππ)-pairs and compare them to single particle inclusive distributions in the fragmentation regions. Distributions of particles observed at Feynmanx 2 in association with various “trigger” particles or systems atx 1 in the same hemisphere are dicussed in terms of the reduced variable $$\tilde x_2 = x_2 /(1 - |x_1 |)$$ . We further present absolute production rates and production ratios of π+'s and π−'s associated with π±,K s 0 , Λ, $$\bar \Lambda $$ ,K *+ (890), (K 0 π+), and (π+ π−)-triggers, and compare them with qualitative predictions of the quark recombination model. Forwardbackward correlations between (K 0 π±), (K s 0 ,p), (Λ, π−), $$(\bar \Lambda \pi ^ \pm )$$ , and (p, π−) pairs are also discussed.

Abstract: New experimental results are presented on inclusive production properties of $$\bar \Sigma ^{ * + } $$ (1385) and $$\bar \Sigma ^{ * + } $$ (1385) inK + p interactions at 32 GeV/c. The analysis is based on significantly larger statistics than previously available. A comparison is also made of invariantx-distributions ofK 0/ $$\bar K^0 $$ , $$\bar \Lambda $$ and $$\bar \Xi ^ + $$ and of $$\bar \Sigma ^{ * \pm } $$ (1385) andK *+(892). These spectra exhibit regularities expected from the quark-recombination picture when it is assumed that the strange mesons and antibaryons are produced off the strange $$\bar s$$ -valence-quark in the incidentK + meson. Transverse momentum distributions are also presented forK *+(892) and $$\bar \Sigma ^{ * \pm } $$ (1385) and found to be very similar. The results on strange antibaryon average multiplicities disagree strongly with a recent version of the additive quark model.

Abstract: Inclusive production of Δ ++ (1232) with >| t p, Δ ++>| c ) 2 is studied in 32 GeV/ c K + p interactions. A systematic comparison with the reaction K + p→pX for >| t p,p>| c ) 2 is made. The production properties of the Δ ++ (1232), of associated π + , π − and K 0 production and of the recoiling system X 0 are investigated in detail. The polarization of the Δ ++ and the energy dependence of the total K + π − cross sections, determined by a Chew-Low extrapolation, are presented and discussed.

Abstract: The charged particle multiplicity distribution has been studied for non-single-diffractive π+ p andpp collisions at $$\sqrt s = 22$$ GeV, for full phase space as well as for intervals in rapidity, azimuthal angle and transverse momentum. In general, the multiplicity distribution is well described by a negative binomial. From comparison of the distribution for negative or positive particles to that of all charged particles, cascading is favoured as an interpretation over stimulated emission. Interesting consequences follow from a comparison of our results to those at collider energies and toe + e − data at comparable energy. Furthermore, evidence is given that the multiplicity distribution is not exactly of negative binomial type in every (connected or disconnected) phase space region.

Abstract: Cross sections and charged multiplicity distributions for π+p,K+p andpp interactions at 250 GeV/c are presented and compared to each other as well as to earlier (for π+p andK+p lower energy) data. Consistently, the meson-proton (M+p) data have narrower multiplicity distributions and higher average multiplicity thanpp data. Up to our energy, generalized KNO functions describe the energy dependence of the shape of the multiplity distribution with one parameter forM+p and one forpp collisions. If interpreted in terms of negative binomials, the parameter 1/k tends to be slightly lower forM+p than forpp data. For both types of hadron-hadron collision, 1/k is larger than fore+e− andlp collisions.

Abstract: A search for directly produced electrons in 70 GeV/cpp interactions has been performed using BEBC equipped with a hydrogen filled track sensitive target surrounded by a hydrogen/neon blanket. No candidates for single electron production with momentump e >500 MeV/c were found in a sample of 66,000 primary interactions. This result places an upper limit of 2.5 μb on the cross section for singlee ± production at the 90% confidence level. The corresponding upper limit on the charmed particle production cross section in 14 μb. From the observation of 7 events producing ane +e− pair with mass, $$m_{e^ + e^ - } > m_{\pi ^0 } $$ thee ±/π± ratio from this source is estimated to be (0.7±0.2)×10−4.

Abstract: Intermittent behaviour is observed in π + p and K + p collisions at 250 GeV/ c . It is stronger there than in O 16 emulsion, but weaker than in e + e − collisions. A jet cascading mechanism is, therefore, the most likely interpretation. Presently used fragmentation models do not (fully) reproduce the effect, suggesting that an improvement of the hadronization picture is needed.

Abstract: In this paper a comparison of the general features of the reactions K ± p→Q ± p (1) at incident momentum 8.25 GeV/ c is presented. The relevant data derive from events yielding four-constraint fits to the reactions K ± p→K ± π + π − p in exposures of the CERN 2m HBC to RF-separated K + and K − beams. The (K ππ ) effective mass distributions, production angular distributions in the Q region (1.2⩽ M (K ππ )⩽1.5 GeV) and corresponding decay angular distributions are exhibited, and background effects due to N ∗ and Δ production are systematically studied. In particular, it is found that the distributions d σ /d t ′ and d σ /d t for reactions (1) are adequately described by exponential functions over the interval 0.05–0.35 GeV 2 , and exhibit a cross-over effect for momentum transfer squared −0.1 GeV 2 . For both reactions a flattening of d σ /d t ′ for t ′ 2 is observed. By studying the Chew-Low plots and the effects of the different cuts it was found that this flattening cannot be attributed to amplitudes with net s -channel helicity flip different from zero, at least at these energies.

Abstract: The Webber and Henyey-Pumplin lower bounds on the root-mean-square impact parameter of exclusive K/sup +/p reactions are determined and compared with the slope of the overlap function calculated from uncorrelated-particle-production models. The similarity of the lower bounds obtained with different methods is shown to be a consequence of the nearly Gaussian transverse-momentum structure of the reaction matrix element squared at fixed rapidities. Multiplicity and total-energy dependence follow naturally from the dynamical transverse-momentum limitation and phase space. The weakness of the lower bounds constitutes evidence for important phase and/or spin contributions to the average squared impact parameter.

Abstract: We present evidence for a new narrow state decaying into oπ + with a mass of 2145 ± 10 MeV/ c 2 and an experimental width of 25 MeV/ c 2 , produced in K + p interactions at 32 GeV/ c . The production cross section σ · BR (→ oπ + ) is equal to 11 ± 3 μb .

Abstract: The elastic and inelastic$\bar p$p cross sections at 70 GeV/c have been determined in an experiment performed at CERN using BEBC equipped with a TST. The topological cross sections were measured and the moments of the inelastic multiplicity distribution are 〈nc〉=6.16±0.09, 〈nc〉/D=2.04±0.05 andf2cc=2.97±0.03. The average number of Dalitz pairs per inelastic event is (3.12±0.09)×10−2. Assuming that these all arise from π0 decay the average π0 multiplicity is$\langle n_{\pi ^0 } \rangle = 2.71 \pm 0.14$. The$\bar p$p−pp cross section differences lead to an annihilation cross section σA = 4.42±0.41 mb and the moments of the annihilation multiplicty distribution are 〈nA〉=8.0±0.3, 〈nA〉/D=2.5±0.2 andf2A−−=−1.4±0.3. An independent check of σA was made by investigating fast forward charged and neutral secondary interactions in the TST and in the surrounding neon-hydrogen mixture, and gives a value σA = 5.0±1.6 mb. The ratio of fast$\bar n$ to$\bar p$ production in non-annihilation interactions at 70 GeV/c is found to be 0.45±0.11.

Abstract: The reaction K + p→ Δ ++ (1236)+ anything is studied at beam momenta 8.2 and 16 GeV/ c and compared with other Δ ++ producing reactions. We find that the low-mass Δ ++ π − enhancement affects the shapes of Δ ++ inclusive distributions. The triple-Regge formula is found to be consistent with the data. Dual properties of this formula are successfully tested.

Abstract: The inclusive reaction K + p → K 0 + X is studied at 5, 8.2 and 16 GeV/ c . The energy dependence and the shapes of inclusive spectra in the central region are found to be consistent with double-Regge expansion. With the values obtained for the parameters of the Regge expansion, prediction are made for the behaviour of the cross section at higher energies.

Abstract: We present inclusive ¶ and K*0(892) cross sections and Feynman x-spectra in K+ p collisions at 250 GeV/c. In the K+ fragmentation region, x > 0.2, the ratio of ¶ to K*0(892) is used to estimate the strangeness suppression factor λ, with the result γ=0.17 ± 0.02 (stat ± 0.01 (syst). We see no evidence for an energy dependence of λ in the CM energy range 7.8 ≤ s ≤21.7 GeV.

Abstract: A compilation is made of charged multiplicity distributions for π ± , K ± , p and p interactions on hydrogen. Besides the usually studied parameters 〈 n c 〉 and D , the skewness γ 1 , the kurtosis γ 2 and the mode are closely examined. It is found that γ 1 and γ 2 may be considered as constant for p lab > 10 GeV/ c . As a consequence, all the data are well parametrized by means of the Edgeworth expansion, describing the approach to a Gaussian when the number of production centres is increased. The constancy of γ 1 would indicate that this number does not grow in the energy domain studied. Limited to the first order, the Edgeworth expansion is a useful alternative to the Czyzewski-Rybicki formula for expressing all the regularities of the multiplicity distributions.

Abstract: Results are presented on the production of K0, K∗+(892) and π± in the interaction K+p → K0 + π± + anything at 8.2 and 16 GeV/c. The π± forward and backward d σ d x distributions are of the form exp (−Ax). It is shown that the forward and backward values of A in a quark-quark rest frame change after subtraction of the contributions due to the resonances produced. A comparison is made of d σ d x inclusive cross sections for K0's and K∗+(892) with the predictions of a quark model in the fragmentation region. The experimental cross section matches the theoretical predictions for K0's but disagree with those for K∗+(892).

Abstract: Two-pion correlations are studied for pions of like charge inK + p andπ + p collisions at 250 GeV/c. An enhanced production is observed at small momentum difference and is attributed to Bose-Einstein interference between identical particles. A systematic study is presented on the influence of parametrization and reference sample. Interpreted in terms of the Kopylov-Podgoretskii parametrization a size of the emitting regionr K ≈1.4 fm is found. The Lorentz invariant parametrization of Goldhaber givesr G ≈0.8 fm. With fixed parametrization, similarity is found for hadronhadron,e + e − and lepton-hadron collisions. No multiplicity or angular dependence is found at our energy.

Abstract: The average transverse momentum 〈Pt〉 has been studied as a function of the charge multiplicity n in π+p, K+p and pp collisions at 250 GeV /c ( s ≈ 22 GeV ) and compared to that at other energies. The effect of cuts in rapidity and pT is demonstrated. A comparison to currently used low-pT models shows that the two-chain dual parton model underestimates the experimentally observed correlation at large pT. The new version of the two-chain LUND-FRITIOF model is better than the first version of this model, but still overestimates the correlation.

Abstract: Results on inclusive single diffraction dissociation inπ+ andK+p interactions at 250 GeV/c are presented for excited masses up to ≃9 GeV. Total and topological cross sections for meson and proton diffraction are determined and their energy dependence is studied. For meson diffraction, hadronization of the diffractive system is well described by a MC model with$q\bar q$-Lund fragmentation and is found to be similar to hadronization ine+e−, annihilation in terms of thrust and mean charged multiplicity. Fireball-like decay models can be excluded from an elongation of the meson system along the beam-pomeron axis.

Abstract: We present results on a number of non-diffractive two-body channels contributing to reactions K+p→K0π+p and K+p→K+π−π+p. The data come from an exposure of the Mirabelle bubble chamber to an r.f. separated K+ beam of 32 GeV/c at the Serpukhov accelerator. Total cross sections are given for the final states K ∗+ (890) p , K ∗+ (1420) p , K 0 Δ ++ (1232), K ∗+ (890) p , Δ ++ (1232), K ∗0 (1420) Δ ++ (1232), K ∗0 (1780) Δ ++ (1232) and K ∗0 (890) Δ ++ (1950) . The differential cross sections are given for all channels with sufficient statistics. The energy dependence of the total and differential cross sections is studied.

Abstract: Total and semi-inclusive cross sections, longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions and spin density matrix elements of theK*+(892) andK*0(892) produced in the inclusive reactionsK+p→K*+(892)+X andK+p→K*0(892)+X at 32 GeV/c are studied in detail. The inclusive spectra of theK*(892) and their decay products are compared with pion and neutral kaon production. TheK*+(892) andK*+(892) are dominantly produced by kaon fragmentation processes. The dependence of average transverse momentum vs.x for resonances has been investigated for the first time.

Inclusive longitudinal and transverse momentum spectra of positively and negatively charged particles are presented. Scaling in the fragmentation regions and scaling violation in the central c.m. region is investigated in detail. The topological pseudo-rapidity densities are shown to scale in the c.m. energy range from 22 to 900 GeV.

Abstract: Multiplicity distributions of all charged and of negative particles for non (single)-diffractive events in π+p and pp collisions at 250 GeV/c (s=22 GeV) are presented for various rapidity intervals. The data are well described by the negative binomial distribution. The π+p and pp data are different for full phase space, but similar for the central region. In the central region, the relation kch≈12 k− holds for all charged and negative multiplicities. This favours the interpretation in terms of cascade models above (partial) stimulated emission models.

When compared to the inclusive π − production, the π 0 cross section is found to be significantly higher in low | x | and p T regions. The data are compared with other experiments and quark fusion model predictions.

Abstract: The Webber, Henyey and Pumplin and overlap function methods are used to determine lower boundsb L on the r.m.s. impact parameter of the exclusive reactionK + p→K + pπ+σ- in 13 experiments with incidentK + momentum between 2.7 and 32 GeV/c. The bounds initially increase with incident momentum and then tend to become constant. They depend only weakly on the mass of the diffractively produced (K +π+π-) system. Structure is observed in the dependence ofb L on the longitudinal CMS momenta of the π+ and π-.

Abstract: We present results of an investigation of diffraction dissociation in exclusive channels inK ± p interactions at 32 GeV/c. Total cross sections are determined forK ±→K ±π+π−,K ±2π+2π−,K 0π±π± K ±2π+π−,K ± K + K −,K ±p $$\bar p$$ , $$\bar \Lambda $$ p, andp→pπ +π−,p2π+2π−,pK +K−,ΛK +,ΛK +π+π− dissociation modes, ranging from a high of ≃ 300 μb to ∼ 3 μb. Thedσ/dt′ differential cross sections of most of the systems studied exhibit structure, with breaks of slope att′ ∼ 0.2 to 0.5 GeV2; some modes have a sharp forward spike with a slope exceeding 10 GeV−2. A systematic investigation of two-body dissociation modesK→A+B andp→A′+B′ shows that these cross sections decrease with increasing threshold massM A+M B, that they are comparable for kaon and proton dissociations at similar diffractive excitation masses and are systematically suppressed by a factor 3–4 for dissociations requiring an $$s\bar s$$ quark pair creation when compared to $$u\bar u$$ pair creation indicating a breakdown ofSU 3 symmetry for the $$q\bar q$$ sea.

Abstract: We present data on the production of the baryons Λ,$\bar \Lambda $,p and of the baryon resonances Σ*+ (1385) and Δ++ (1232) inK+p and π+p interactions at 250 GeV/c. Results are given on total and semi-inclusive cross sections, Feynman-x spectra, transverse momentum distributions and Λ polarization. The data are compared with measurements at lower energies, with deep inclastic lepton nucleon data and with predictions of quark-parton models. The models underestimate Λ production in the central c.m. region, a feature also seen in recent heavy-ion data. This failure can be cured in JETSET 6.3 by adjustment of the di-quark break-up probability.

Abstract: The reaction K + p → Δ ++ (1236) + anything is studied at beam momentum 8.2 GeV/ c . The spin density matrix of the Δ ++ shows than one-pion exchange is dominant at low-momentum transfer. The total and topological K + π − cross sections have been determined by a Chew-Low extrapolation in the cm energy range from threshold to 1.8 GeV, using three different methods of extrapolation.
