Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are valuable bioactive polysaccharides with promising biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. In this study, we analyzed GAGs using HPLC-MS/MS from the bone (B), muscle (M), skin (S), and viscera (V) of Scophthalmus maximus (SM), Paralichthysi (P), Limanda ferruginea (LF), Cleisthenes herzensteini (G), Platichthys bicoloratus (PB), Pleuronichthys cornutus (PC), and Cleisthenes herzensteini (CH). Unsaturated disaccharide products were obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis of the GAGs and subjected to compositional analysis of chondroitin sulfate (CS), heparin sulfate (HS), and hyaluronic acid (HA), including the sulfation degree of CS and HS, as well as the content of each GAG. The contents of GAGs in the tissues and the sulfation degree differed significantly among the fish. The bone of S. maximus contained more than 12 μg of CS per mg of dry tissue. Although the fish typically contained high levels of CSA (CS-4S), some fish bone tissue exhibited elevated levels of CSC (CS-6S). The HS content was found to range from 10–150 ug/g, primarily distributed in viscera, with a predominant non-sulfated structure (HS-0S). The structure of HA is well-defined without sulfation modification. These analytical results are independent of biological classification. We provide a high-throughput rapid detection method for tissue samples using HPLC-MS/MS to rapidly screen ideal sources of GAG. On this basis, four kinds of CS were prepared and purified from flounder bone, and their molecular weight was determined to be 23–28 kDa by HPGPC-MALLS, and the disaccharide component unit was dominated by CS-6S, which is a potential substitute for CSC derived from shark cartilage. Background: Neuropathic pain remains a formidable challenge for modern medicine. The first‐line pharmacological therapies exhibit limited efficacy and unfavorable side effect profiles, highlighting an unmet need for effective therapeutic medications. The past decades have witnessed an explosion in efforts to translate epigenetic concepts into pain therapy and shed light on epigenetics as a promising avenue for pain research. Recently, the aberrant activity of histone deacetylase (HDAC) has emerged as a key mechanism contributing to the development and maintenance of neuropathic pain. Aims: In this review, we highlight the distinctive role of specific HDAC subtypes in a cell‐specific manner in pain nociception, and outline the recent experimental evidence supporting the therapeutic potential of HDACi in neuropathic pain. Methods: We have summarized studies of HDAC in neuropathic pain in Pubmed. Results: HDACs, widely distributed in the neuronal and non‐neuronal cells of the dorsal root ganglion and spinal cord, regulate gene expression by deacetylation of histone or non‐histone proteins and involving in increased neuronal excitability and neuroinflammation, thus promoting peripheral and central sensitization. Importantly, pharmacological manipulation of aberrant acetylation using HDAC‐targeted inhibitors (HDACi) has shown promising pain‐relieving properties in various preclinical models of neuropathic pain. Yet, many of which exhibit low‐specificity that may induce off‐target toxicities, underscoring the necessity for the development of isoform‐selective HDACi in pain management. Conclusions: Abnormally elevated HDACs promote neuronal excitability and neuroinflammation by epigenetically modulating pivotal gene expression in neuronal and immune cells, contributing to peripheral and central sensitization in the progression of neuropathic pain, and HDACi showed significant efficacy and great potential for alleviating neuropathic pain. Mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPS II) is a neurometabolic disorder, due to the deficit of the lysosomal hydrolase iduronate 2-sulfatase (IDS). This leads to a severe clinical condition caused by a multi-organ accumulation of the glycosaminoglycans (GAGs/GAG) heparan- and dermatan-sulfate, whose elevated levels can be detected in body fluids. Since 2006, enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) has been clinically applied, showing efficacy in some peripheral districts. In addition to clinical monitoring, GAG dosage has been commonly used to evaluate ERT efficacy. However, a strict long-term monitoring of GAG content and composition in body fluids has been rarely performed. Here, we report the characterization of plasma and urine GAGs in Ids knock-out (Ids-ko) compared to wild-type (WT) mice, and their changes along a 24-week follow-up, with and without ERT. The concentration of heparan-sulfate (HS), chondroitin-sulfate (CS), and dermatan-sulfate (DS), and of the non-sulfated hyaluronic acid (HA), together with their differentially sulfated species, was quantified by capillary electrophoresis with laser-induced fluorescence. In untreated Ids-ko mice, HS and CS + DS were noticeably increased at all time points, while during ERT follow-up, a substantial decrease was evidenced for HS and, to a minor extent, for CS + DS. Moreover, several structural parameters were altered in untreated ko mice and reduced after ERT, however without reaching physiological values. Among these, disaccharide B and HS 2s disaccharide showed to be the most interesting candidates as biomarkers for MPS II. GAG chemical signature here defined provides potential biomarkers useful for an early diagnosis of MPS II, a more accurate follow-up of ERT, and efficacy evaluations of newly proposed therapies. KEY MESSAGES : Plasmatic and urinary GAGs are useful markers for MPS II early diagnosis and prognosis. CE-LIF allows GAG structural analysis and the quantification of 17 different disaccharides. Currently, circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has drawn wide interest in 3D display, information storage, and optical sensing. However, traditional synthetic paths are often accompanied by low chiral optical intensity and complex processes. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), with the properties of liquid crystals, can spontaneously arrange into the left-handed layered nanofilm, which enables them candidates in the construction of CPL materials. Following this approach, this work reviews the synthesis of cellulose-based chiral luminescent materials. The co-assembly technique, in situ intercalation strategy, and defect destruction design are efficient in encapsulating the luminophores into the CNC organization. Next, various strategies on the CPL regulation, including the matching of the photonic bandgap, optical pathway design, and tailored helical structure, are summarized. These offer new sights in the CPL control, mainly focusing on the amplification and inversion of optical signals. Multimodal and convertible chiroptical signals enable the photonic films with practical values in anti-counterfeit, sensing, and handedness induction. Background: The Italian Fund for Alzheimer's and other dementias approved in 2020 enabled the conducting of a survey in the Italian Centers for Cognitive Disorders and Dementias (CCDDs) to analyse the organization, the administrative features and the professionals' characteristics., Aims: To investigate the current use of neuropsychological (NP) tests in Italian CCDDs and the association between the use of a basic set of tests for neuropsychological assessment (NPA) and organizational/structural characteristics of CCDDs., Methods: A survey was conducted with an online questionnaire in all CCDDs between July 2022 and February 2023. To verify the use of a comprehensive NPA in the diagnosis of cognitive disorders and dementia, we identified a minimum core test (MCT)., Results: The CCDDs using a Minimum Core Test (MCT) significantly increased from 45.7% in 2015 to the current 57.1%. Territorial CCDDs using MCT significantly increased from 24.9% in 2015 to 37% in 2022 (p = 0.004). As multivariable results, the presence of psychologist/neuropsychologist in the staff and the University-based/IRCCS CCDDs increased the probability of using MCT (OR = 9.2; 95% CI 5.6-15.0; p < 0.001 and OR = 5.4; 95% CI 1.9-15.9; p = 0.002, respectively), while CCDDs in Southern Italy-Islands showed a lower probability than those in the North (OR = 0.4; 95% CI 0.2-0.7; p = 0.001)., Discussion: Almost half of CCDDs (43%) do not use MCT in their clinical practice. The presence of the psychologist/neuropsychologist on the staff has a key role in the adoption of MCT and regional differences have increased over the past years. NPA is crucial in the diagnostic process and in characterizing risk profiles in order to implement targeted interventions for risk reduction., Conclusions: Our results could help to identify good practices aimed at improving dementia diagnosis. Low-cost molecular emitters that merge circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) properties are attractive for many high-tech applications. However, the design of such emitters remains a difficult task. To address this challenge, here, we propose a simple and efficient strategy, demonstrated by the design of pseudochiral-at-metal complexes [Cu(L*)DPEPhos]PF 6 bearing a (+)/(-)-menthol-derived 1,10-phenanthroline ligand (L*). These complexes exhibit a yellow CP-TADF with a record-high quantum yield (close to 100 %) and high dissymmetry factor (|g lum |~1×10 -2 ). Remarkably, the above compounds also show a negative thermal-quenching (NTQ) of luminescence in the 300-77 K range. Exploiting the designed Cu(I) emitters, we fabricated efficient CP-TADF OLEDs displaying mirror-imaged CPL bands with high |g EL | factors of 1.5×10 -2 and the maximum EQE of 6.15 %. Equally important, using the (+)-[Cu(L*)DPEPhos]PF 6 complex, we have discovered that an external magnetic field noticeably suppresses CP-TADF of Cu(I) emitters. Chiral rhenium(I) emitters exhibiting circularly polarized phosphorescence (CPP) are an attractive mainstay for CP organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs). However, the efficiency of such emitters is not ideal, and they have never been explored for circularly polarized electroluminescence (CPEL) applications. Here, we have tailored robust chiral Re(I) complexes with improved CPP properties, and demonstrated CPEL from rhenium emitters for the first time. Two pairs of enantiomeric Re(I) complexes have been synthesized by introducing of one or two chiral menthol groups into 1,10-phenanthroline unit (phen) of archetypical emitters [ReBr(CO) 3 (phen)]. The designed complexes exhibit a yellow CPP with enhanced |g lum | factors (up to 2.5×10 -2 ) and a good quantum efficiency. The pioneering Re(I)-based CP-OLEDs (based on the obtained emitters) exhibit yellow CPEL with |g EL | factors of up to 6.2×10 -3 and a maximal external quantum efficiency of 13.2 %. In the last decade, momentous progress in lead halide perovskite (LHP) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) is witnessed as their external quantum efficiency (η ext ) has increased from 0.1 to more than 30%. Indeed, perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs), which can in principle reach 100% internal quantum efficiency as they are not limited by the spin-statistics, are reaching their full potential and approaching the theoretical limit in terms of device efficiency. However, ≈70% to 85% of total generated photons are trapped within the devices through the dissipation pathways of the substrate, waveguide, and evanescent modes. To this end, numerous extrinsic and intrinsic light-outcoupling strategies are studied to enhance light-outcoupling efficiency (η out ). At the outset, various external and internal light outcoupling techniques are reviewed with specific emphasis on emission anisotropy and its role on η out . In particular, the device η ext can be enhanced by up to 50%, taking advantage of the increased probability for photons outcoupled to air by effectively inducing horizontally oriented emission transition dipole moments (TDM) in the perovskite emitters. The role of the TDM orientation in PeLED performance and the factors allowing its rational manipulation are reviewed extensively. Magnetic circularly polarized luminescence (MCPL) spectroscopy is widely used to evaluate the luminescence dissymmetry factor (g MCPL ) for compounds. However, even for the same instrument and operating conditions, the measured g MCPL is affected by errors associated with sources such as baseline drift and spectral noise, and so the range of variation of g MCPL must be considered when comparing values, which requires multiple measurements for the same sample. Also, because many samples undergo photodegradation under excitation light, it is difficult to accumulate and average spectra for samples with weak MCPL signals to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. Single measurements must therefore be performed on multiple samples and the results averaged. Furthermore, for samples with a small Stokes shift, spectral correction is required to compensate for the intensity reduction due to the inner-filter effect (IFE). Such measurements are generally performed manually and are therefore time consuming and prone to human error. Here, we demonstrate the use of a newly developed high-throughput MCPL system to automatically measure MCPL and fluorescence spectra of multiple samples of phthalocyanine complexes with high efficiency and reduced human errors. Circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) hold significant promise for applications in 3D displays due to the ability to generate circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) directly. In this study, two pairs of circularly polarized thermally activated delayed fluorescence (CP-TADF) enantiomers, named RR/SS-ONCN and RS/SR-ONCN, were synthesized by integrating two distinct chiral groups into the dicyanobenzene unit. The RR/SS-ONCN and RS/SR-ONCN enantiomers show CPL properties with dissymmetry photoluminescence factors (|g PL |) of 1.3×10 -3 and 2.0×10 -3 in doped films, respectively. Notably, RR/SS-ONCN exhibit higher |g PL | values than that of RS/SR-ONCN, especially in doped films, indicating that when the configurations of the two chiral groups are identical, the |g PL | value of the CP-TADF materials can be enhanced, demonstrating a certain stacking effect. Moreover, the corresponding CP-OLEDs demonstrate good performances, achieving maximum external quantum efficiencies of up to 21.9 % and notable CP electroluminescence with |g EL | factors of up to 1.0×10 -3 ., (© 2024 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), including hyaluronic acid (HA), chondroitin sulfate (CS)/dermatan sulfate (DS), heparan sulfate (HS)/heparin (HP), and keratan sulfate (KS), play pivotal roles in living organisms. Generally, GAGs are analyzed after enzymatic digestion into unsaturated or saturated disaccharides. Due to high structural similarity between disaccharides, however, separation during analysis is challenging. Additionally, little is known about the structures of GAGs and their functional relationships. Elucidating the function of GAGs requires highly sensitive quantitative analytical methods. We developed a method for the simultaneous analysis of 18 types of disaccharides derived from HA (1 type), CS/DS (7 types), HS/HP (8 types), and KS (2 types) potentially detectable in analyses of human urine. The simple method involves HPLC separation with fluorescence detection following derivatization of GAG-derived disaccharides using 4-aminobenzoic acid ethyl ester (ABEE) as a pre-labeling agent and 2-picoline borane as a reductant. The ABEE derivatization reaction can be performed under aqueous conditions, and excess derivatization reagents can be easily, rapidly, and safely removed. This method enables highly sensitive simultaneous analysis of the 18 abovementioned types of GAG-derived disaccharides using HPLC with fluorescence detection in small amounts of urine (1 mL) in a single run. Nanopatterning on biomaterials has attracted significant attention as it can lead to the development of biomedical devices capable of performing diagnostic and therapeutic functions while being biocompatible. Among various nanopatterning techniques, electron-beam lithography (EBL) enables precise and versatile nanopatterning in desired shapes. Various biomaterials are successfully nanopatterned as bioresists by using EBL. However, the use of high-energy electron beams (e-beams) for high-resolutive patterning has incorporated functional materials and has caused adverse effects on biomaterials. Moreover, the scattering of electrons not absorbed by the bioresist leads to proximity effects, thus deteriorating pattern quality. Herein, EBL-based nanopatterning is reported by inducing molecular degradation of amorphous silk fibroin, followed by selectively inducing secondary structures. High-resolution EBL nanopatterning is achievable, even at low-energy e-beam (5 keV) and low doses, as it minimizes the proximity effect and enables precise 2.5D nanopatterning via grayscale lithography. Additionally, integrating nanophotonic structures into fluorescent material-containing silk allows for fluorescence amplification. Furthermore, this post-exposure cross-linking way indicates that the silk bioresist can maintain nanopatterned information stored in silk molecules in the amorphous state, utilizing for the secure storage of nanopatterned information as a security patch. Mastic is a natural resin produced by Pistacia lentiscus L. (Anacardiaceae) with high medicinal value and have been traditionally used as Uighur imported medicine for centuries. In this study, 16 triterpenoids including seven new noroleanane triterpenoids (1-7), along with nine known oleanane triterpenoids (8-16), were isolated from the mastic. Their chemical structures were determined on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analyses (including IR, UV, ESI-HR-MS and NMR spectroscopy) and singlecrystal X-ray diffraction. Compounds 4-7, 11, 14 and 16 showed strong inhibitory NO production in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells with IC 50 values 7.44-9.76 μM, respectively (positive control dexamethasone, 9.93±1.17 μM). Furthermore, compounds 3 and 12 significantly inhibited the growth of SW480 cells, compound 3 showed the most pronounced inhibitory effect with an IC 50 of 2.30±0.38 μM., (© 2024 Wiley-VHCA AG, Zurich, Switzerland.)

Several studies suggest that topographical patterns influence nerve cell fate. Efforts have been made to improve nerve cell functionality through this approach, focusing on therapeutic strategies that enhance nerve cell function and support structures. However, inadequate nerve cell orientation can impede long-term efficiency, affecting nerve tissue repair. Therefore, enhancing neurites/axons directional growth and cell orientation is crucial for better therapeutic outcomes, reducing nerve coiling, and ensuring accurate nerve fiber connections. Conflicting results exist regarding the effects of micro- or nano-patterns on nerve cell migration, directional growth, immunogenic response, and angiogenesis, complicating their clinical use. Nevertheless, advances in lithography, electrospinning, casting, and molding techniques to intentionally control the fate and neuronal cells orientation are being explored to rapidly and sustainably improve nerve tissue efficiency. It appears that this can be accomplished by combining micro- and nano-patterns with nanomaterials, biological gradients, and electrical stimulation. Despite promising outcomes, the unclear mechanism of action, the presence of growth cones in various directions, and the restriction of outcomes to morphological and functional nerve cell markers have presented challenges in utilizing this method. This review seeks to clarify how micro- or nano-patterns affect nerve cell morphology and function, highlighting the potential benefits of cell orientation, especially in combined approaches. Spontaneous pain, a major complaint of patients with neuropathic pain, has eluded study because there is no reliable marker in either preclinical models or clinical studies. Here, we performed a comprehensive electroencephalogram/electromyogram analysis of sleep in several mouse models of chronic pain: neuropathic (spared nerve injury and chronic constriction injury), inflammatory (Freund's complete adjuvant and carrageenan, plantar incision) and chemical pain (capsaicin). We find that peripheral axonal injury drives fragmentation of sleep by increasing brief arousals from non–rapid eye movement sleep (NREMS) without changing total sleep amount. In contrast to neuropathic pain, inflammatory or chemical pain did not increase brief arousals. NREMS fragmentation was reduced by the analgesics gabapentin and carbamazepine, and it resolved when pain sensitivity returned to normal in a transient neuropathic pain model (sciatic nerve crush). Genetic silencing of peripheral sensory neurons or ablation of CGRP+ neurons in the parabrachial nucleus prevented sleep fragmentation, whereas pharmacological blockade of skin sensory fibers was ineffective, indicating that the neural activity driving the arousals originates ectopically in primary nociceptor neurons and is relayed through the lateral parabrachial nucleus. These findings identify NREMS fragmentation by brief arousals as an effective proxy to measure spontaneous neuropathic pain in mice. Similar patterns of sleep fragmentation occurred in neuropathic mice and were prevented by genetic ablation of nociceptors or certain analgesic drugs. Colloidal crystals are materials self‐assembled from the colloidal nanoparticles. Due to the ordered microstructure, they exhibit significant optical properties and have shown huge potential in the field of biosensing. Besides, the unique macroscopic shapes can also play a critical role in the sensing process. Here, we present a comprehensive discussion on the colloidal crystal‐based biosensors with different topological shapes, including the development strategies of currently reported colloidal crystal particles, films, and fibers, and their recent progress in biosensing. In addition, the faced challenges and the possible solutions are also concluded and discussed. We expect this review can enrich the knowledge and encourage the communication of interdisciplinary researchers, thus promoting the further development and practical applications of colloidal crystal‐based biosensors. The post-COVID condition (PCC) is a pathology stemming from COVID-19, and studying its pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment is crucial. Neuroinflammation causes the most common manifestations of this disease including headaches, fatigue, insomnia, depression, anxiety, among others. Currently, there are no specific management proposals; however, given that the inflammatory component involves cytokines and free radicals, these conditions must be treated to reduce the current symptoms and provide neuroprotection to reduce the risk of a long-term neurodegenerative disease. It has been shown that cannabis has compounds with immunomodulatory and antioxidant functions in other pathologies. Therefore, exploring this approach could provide a viable therapeutic option for PCC, which is the purpose of this review. This review involved an exhaustive search in specialized databases including PubMed, PubChem, ProQuest, EBSCO, Scopus, Science Direct, Web of Science, and Clinical Trials. Phytocannabinoids, including cannabidiol (CBD), cannabigerol (CBG), and Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), exhibit significant antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties and have been shown to be an effective treatment for neuroinflammatory conditions. These compounds could be promising adjuvants for PCC alone or in combination with other antioxidants or therapies. PCC presents significant challenges to neurological health, and neuroinflammation and oxidative stress play central roles in its pathogenesis. A pair of chiral iridium(III) complexes with only ligand chiral centers were successfully synthesized. Strong intramolecular hydrogen bonds exist in these complexes, which improve their stability and luminescence efficiency. All complexes exhibited good thermal stability with Td > 396 °C and nearly unitary PLQYs. The HOMOs of these complexes are mostly located on the chiral auxiliary ligands with a proportion exceeding 62%, which can improve their chiral induction ability. Therefore, their CD spectra display perfect mirror symmetry, and their PL spectra also have apparent circular polarization with dissymmetry factors on the order of 10−3. The circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes using these chiral emitters exhibit excellent performances with a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) of 31.9% and intense circularly polarized electroluminescence signals with a dissymmetry factor (‖gEL‖) of up to 3.0 × 10−3. Taking advantage of its adhesive nature and chemical reactivity, polydopamine (PDA) has recently been integrated with plasmonic nanoparticles to yield unprecedented hybrid nanostructures. With advanced architectures and optical properties, PDA-based plasmonic nanocomposites have showcased their potential in a wide spectrum of plasmon-driven applications, ranging from catalysis and chemical sensing, to drug delivery and photothermal therapy. The rational design of PDA-based plasmonic nanocomposites entails different material features of PDA and necessitates a thorough understanding of the sophisticated PDA chemistry; yet, there is still a lack of a systematic review on their fabrication strategies, plasmonic properties, and applications. In this Highlight review, five representative types of PDA-based plasmonic nanocomposites will be featured. Specifically, their design principles, synthetic strategies, and optical behaviors will be elucidated with an emphasis on the irreplaceable roles of PDA in the synthetic mechanisms. Together, their essential functions in diverse applications will be outlined. Lastly, existing challenges and outlooks on the rational design and assembly of next-generation PDA-based plasmonic nanocomposites will be presented. TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL or Apo2 or TNFSF10) belongs to the TNF superfamily. When bound to its agonistic receptors, TRAIL can induce apoptosis in tumour cells, while sparing healthy cells. Over the last three decades, this tumour selectivity has prompted many studies aiming at evaluating the anti-tumoral potential of TRAIL or its derivatives. Although most of these attempts have failed, so far, novel formulations are still being evaluated. However, emerging evidence indicates that TRAIL can also trigger a non-canonical signal transduction pathway that is likely to be detrimental for its use in oncology. Likewise, an increasing number of studies suggest that in some circumstances TRAIL can induce, via Death receptor 5 (DR5), tumour cell motility, potentially leading to and contributing to tumour metastasis. While the pro-apoptotic signal transduction machinery of TRAIL is well known from a mechanistic point of view, that of the non-canonical pathway is less understood. The axon is a neuronal structure capable of processing, encoding, and transmitting information. This assessment contrasts with a limiting, but deeply rooted, perspective where the axon functions solely as a transmission cable of somatodendritic activity, sending signals in the form of stereotypical action potentials. This perspective arose, at least partially, because of the technical difficulties in probing axons: their extreme length-to-diameter ratio and intricate growth paths preclude the study of their dynamics through traditional techniques. Recent findings are challenging this view and revealing a much larger repertoire of axonal computations. Axons display complex signaling processes and structure-function relationships, which can be modulated via diverse activitydependent mechanisms. Additionally, axons can exhibit patterns of activity that are dramatically different from those of their corresponding soma. Not surprisingly, many of these recent discoveries have been driven by novel technology developments, which allow for in vitro axon electrophysiology with unprecedented spatiotemporal resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. In this review, we outline the state-of-the-art in vitro toolset for axonal electrophysiology and summarize the recent discoveries in axon function it has enabled. We also review the increasing repertoire of microtechnologies for controlling axon guidance which, in combination with the available cutting-edge electrophysiology and imaging approaches, have the potential for more controlled and high-throughput in vitro studies. We anticipate that a larger adoption of these new technologies by the neuroscience community will drive a new era of experimental opportunities in the study of axon physiology and consequently, neuronal function. Electroluminescent devices such as circularly polarised organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) fabricated by conventional methods do not exhibit adequate circularly polarised electroluminescence (CPEL) with high circular polarisation. Therefore, new approaches for CPEL and CP-OLED systems are needed. We developed an external-magnetic-field-driven CP-OLED device that emits red CPEL by integrating an achiral optically inactive phosphorescent platinum(II) porphyrin luminophore (PtOEP) in the emission layer (EML). This magnetic CP-OLED system can simultaneously emit circularly polarised light with opposite rotations from the EML in the N-up and S-up directions of the applied magnetic field. By utilising this mechanism that allows simultaneous emission upon the application of a magnetic field and the reflection-reversal property of circularly polarized light, we may suppress the decrease in both the luminosity and circular polarisation of CPEL. The direction of rotation of CPEL was successfully reversed by switching the Faraday geometry of the applied magnetic field. This approach can promote the development of novel CP-OLED devices. We review theoretical approaches for modelling the origin, persistence and change of social norms. The most comprehensive models describe the coevolution of behaviours, personal, descriptive and injunctive norms while considering influences of various authorities and accounting for cognitive processes and between-individual differences. Models show that social norms can improve individual and group well-being. Under some conditions though, deleterious norms can persist in the population through conformity, preference falsification and pluralistic ignorance. Polarization in behaviour and beliefs can be maintained, even when societal advantages of particular behaviours or belief systems over alternatives are clear. Attempts to change social norms can backfire through cognitive processes including cognitive dissonance and psychological reactance. Under some conditions social norms can change rapidly via tipping point dynamics. Norms can be highly susceptible to manipulation, and network structure influences their propagation. Future models should incorporate network structure more thoroughly, explicitly study online norms, consider cultural variations and be applied to real-world processes. Marine geological studies of Naples Bay are discussed and reviewed, focusing on the application of the seismo-stratigraphic concepts to a Late Quaternary volcanic area. The Naples Bay represents an active volcanic area in which the interactions between volcanic and sedimentary processes controlled a complex stratigraphic architecture during the Late Quaternary period. While the volcanic processes took place in correspondence with the activity of the Somma–Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei Ischia, and Procida volcanic complexes, the sedimentary processes were controlled by the fluvial processes in the Sarno-Sebeto coastal plain and by the tectonic uplift in correspondence with the Sorrento Peninsula's structural high Key geophysical and stratigraphic studies of the three active volcanic complexes are revised and discussed. The seismo-stratigraphic concepts applied in the geological interpretation of seismic profiles of Naples Bay are reviewed and discussed: here, the classical concepts of seismic and sequence stratigraphy have been successfully applied, but only partly, due to the occurrence of several buried volcanoes and volcanic seismic units and tephra layers, calibrated by gravity cores. The spontaneous rupture of a subcostal (12th intercostal) artery is exceptionally rare and could be fatal, requiring early diagnosis and treatment. Only one case of intercostal artery (ICA) bleeding in a patient undergoing hemodialysis (HD) has been reported. We additionally describe a 41-year-old man undergoing HD who presented with a spontaneous hemoperitoneum and shock resulting from a subcostal artery rupture. He initially complained of diffuse abdominal pain and dizziness at the emergency room. His abdomen was bloated, and there was tenderness in the right upper quadrant area. Enhanced computed tomography and arteriography revealed a rupture of the right subcostal artery. After the super-selection of the bleeding artery by a microcatheter, embolization was performed using a detachable coil and gelfoam. In a subsequent arteriogram, additional contrast leakage was no longer detected, and his blood pressure was restored to normal. The patient was discharged without any sequelae. He was followed up at our HD center without recurrence of ICA bleeding. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second case in the English literature documenting a spontaneous ICA rupture in a patient undergoing HD. This case indicates that injury to ICA should be suspected when patients undergoing HD complain of abdominal or chest pain and dizziness, although it is very rare. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Urbanization is commonly associated with biodiversity loss and habitat fragmentation. However, urban environments often have greenspaces that can support wildlife populations, including rare species. The challenge for conservation planners working in these systems is identifying priority habitats and corridors for protection before they are lost. In a rapidly changing urban environment, this requires prompt decisions informed by accurate spatial information. Here, we combine several approaches to map habitat and assess connectivity for a diverse set of rare species in seven urban study areas across southern Michigan, USA. We incorporated multiple connectivity tools for a comprehensive appraisal of species‐habitat patterns across these urban landscapes. We observed distinct differences in connectivity by taxonomic group and site. The three turtle species (Blanding's, Eastern Box, and Spotted) consistently had more habitat predicted to be suitable per site than other evaluated species. This is promising for this at‐risk taxonomic group and allows conservation efforts to focus on mitigating threats such as road mortality. Grassland and prairie‐associated species (American Bumble Bee, Black and Gold Bumble Bee, and Henslow's Sparrow) had the least amount of habitat on a site‐by‐site basis. Kalamazoo and the northern Detroit sites had the highest levels of multi‐species connectivity across the entire study area based on the least cost paths. These connectivity results have direct applications in urban planning. Kalamazoo, one of the focal urban regions, has implemented a Natural Features Protection (NFP) plan to bolster natural area protections within the city. We compared our connectivity results to the NFP area and show where this plan will have an immediate positive impact and additional areas for potential consideration in future expansions of the protection network. Our results show that conservation opportunities exist within each of the assessed urban areas for maintaining rare species, a key benefit of this multi‐species and multi‐site approach. Molecules based on the octaazaperopyrenedioxide (OAPPDO) motif represent a new class of organic emitters with the ability to form amorphous films when processed from solution while retaining their emissive properties. Here, we report the synthesis of bay-functionalized OAPPDO derivatives with thioether-substituents, which are structurally characterized by their twisted π-core. The combination of this structural motif with suitable substituents at the chromophore facilitates the deposition of neat and smooth films from solution, in which the molecules remain electronically decoupled, thus drastically reducing non-radiative decay pathways. An analysis of absorption and emission spectra of solutions and spincoated thin films is provided along with details of their structural morphology and thermodynamics. The amorphous thin films display spectroscopic characteristics similar to those of the isolated molecules in solution and exhibit photoluminescence quantum yields up to 17%. The high oscillator strength of smooth films of these OAPPDO derivatives enables their integration in Fabry–Pérot microcavities with high quality factors and the observation of strong light-matter coupling with clear exciton–polariton modes and large coupling strength. Aberrant glycans are a hallmark of cancer states. Notably, emerging evidence has demonstrated that the diagnosis of cancers with tumour-specific glycan patterns holds great potential to address unmet medical needs, especially in improving diagnostic sensitivity and selectivity. However, despite vast glycans having been identified as potent markers, glycan-based diagnostic methods remain largely limited in clinical practice. There are several reasons that prevent them from reaching the market, and the lack of anti-glycan antibodies is one of the most challenging hurdles. With the increasing need for accelerating the translational process, numerous efforts have been made to find antibody alternatives, such as lectins, boronic acids and aptamers. However, issues concerning affinity, selectivity, stability and versatility are yet to be fully addressed. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), synthetic antibody mimics with tailored cavities for target molecules, hold the potential to revolutionize this dismal progress. MIPs can bind a wide range of glycan markers, even those without specific antibodies. This capacity effectively broadens the clinical applicability of glycan-based diagnostics. Additionally, glycoform-resolved diagnosis can also be achieved through customization of MIPs, allowing for more precise diagnostic applications. In this review, we intent to introduce the current status of glycans as potential biomarkers and critically evaluate the challenges that hinder the development of in vitro diagnostic assays, with a particular focus on glycan-specific recognition entities. Moreover, we highlight the key role of MIPs in this area and provide examples of their successful use. We demonstrated the low-cost, eco-friendly fabrication techniques for inverted perovskite solar cells (iPSCs) with multilayered electron transporting layers using fullerene derivative (PCBM) and ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) by combining the meniscus-coating, push-coating, and transfer-printing techniques. We fabricated the multilayered planar iPSCs by low-temperature printing process not higher than 120 °C. Using meniscus coating method by reciprocating the glass rod back and forth repeatedly for 2–10 times, the material usage of PCBM and toxic chlorobenzene for iPSCs to 1/15 ~ 1/20 compared with the conventional spin-coating method, and 1/10 for ZnO NPs without extending the tact time. The material utilization rate became about 50% and 100% for meniscus- and push-coating, and a pin-hole-free uniform film was obtained for meniscus coating. We also reduced the initial degradation of perovskite layer during the deposition of ZnO onto the perovskite layer and improved the photovoltaic properties by the transfer-printing of ZnO from "wet-PDMS" stamp onto the thin PCBM film coated perovskite layers. Studying the distribution of morphologically cryptic animal species is always a very difficult task. Because most marsh frog species (the Pelophylax ridibundus complex) are cryptic, we used molecular markers to identify them. Three marsh frog species (P. ridibundus, P. kurtmuelleri and P. cf. bedriagae) inhabit the northern part of Western Palearctic. We created a database of localities and built models of their modern distribution. These models showed that the most suitable habitats are on the north of the Mediterranean region for P. cf. bedriagae, temperate Europe for P. ridibundus, and the Balkan coastal areas for P. kurtmuelleri. The projection of the modern ecological niches under the late-Quaternary climatic conditions showed that the range of P. kurtmuelleri remained largely unchanged during the period, whereas the ranges of P. cf. bedriagae and especially P. ridibundus changed greatly over time. During the Last Glacial Maximum, the presumed range of P. cf. bedriagae covered a relatively large area in the north of the Mediterranean region and the south of European Russia. Glacial refugia of P. ridibundus were apparently located in the northern Balkans, the northern coast of the Black and Azov seas, and possibly in Western Europe. The northward long-distance post-glacial dispersal of P. ridibundus occurred from refugia in the northeastern Balkans and the Black-Azov seas region. Since the Late Pleistocene, suitable habitats for P. cf. bedriagae in southern Russia began to decline, but local habitats for P. ridibundus become more suitable. Transparent conductive films (TCFs) are irreplaceable components in most optoelectronic applications such as solar cells, organic light-emitting diodes, sensors, smart windows, and bioelectronics. The shortcomings of existing traditional transparent conductors demand the development of new material systems that are both transparent and electrically conductive, with variable functionality to meet the requirements of new generation optoelectronic devices. In this respect, TCFs with periodic or irregular nanomesh structures have recently emerged as promising candidates, which possess superior mechanical properties in comparison with conventional metal oxide TCFs. Among the methods for nanomesh TCFs fabrication, nanosphere lithography (NSL) has proven to be a versatile platform, with which a wide range of morphologically distinct nanomesh TCFs have been demonstrated. These materials are not only functionally diverse, but also have advantages in terms of device compatibility. This review provides a comprehensive description of the NSL process and its most relevant derivatives to fabricate nanomesh TCFs. The structure-property relationships of these materials are elaborated and an overview of their application in different technologies across disciplines related to optoelectronics is given. Strong light–matter coupling to form exciton– and vibropolaritons is increasingly touted as a powerful tool to alter the fundamental properties of organic materials. It is proposed that these states and their facile tunability can be used to rewrite molecular potential energy landscapes and redirect photophysical pathways, with applications from catalysis to electronic devices. Crucial to their photophysical properties is the exchange of energy between coherent, bright polaritons and incoherent dark states. One of the most potent tools to explore this interplay is transient absorption/reflectance spectroscopy. Previous studies have revealed unexpectedly long lifetimes of the coherent polariton states, for which there is no theoretical explanation. Applying these transient methods to a series of strong-coupled organic microcavities, we recover similar long-lived spectral effects. Based on transfer-matrix modeling of the transient experiment, we find that virtually the entire photoresponse results from photoexcitation effects other than the generation of polariton states. Our results suggest that the complex optical properties of polaritonic systems make them especially prone to misleading optical signatures and that more challenging high-time-resolution measurements on high-quality microcavities are necessary to uniquely distinguish the coherent polariton dynamics. Two new crystallographically characterized samarium complexes, [Sm(fod)3(L1)] (1) and [Sm(fod)3(L2)] (2) {L1 = 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (bath), L2 = 2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine and fod = anion of 6,6,7,7,8,8,8-heptafluoro-2,2-dimethyl-3,5-octanedione (Hfod)}, were synthesized and thoroughly characterized. Single-crystal (SC) analysis shows that complex 1 is an eight-coordinate structure with a distorted square antiprism geometry (D4d), whereas complex 2 possesses a nine-coordinate structure with distorted muffin geometry (Cs). The NMR results are in line with SC-XRD analysis, which further validate that the complexes remain intact in solutions. The photophysical characteristics of the complexes were studied in both visible and near infra-red (NIR) regions. The PLQY values of the present complexes were found to be higher than those reported in the literature except for a tetrakis Sm complex. This result indicates that both the ligands act as effective antennas for the present systems. A comparison of PLQY and emission lifetime values within the present complexes (in solid state) reveals that energy transfer from terpy to Sm3+ is more effective than that from the bath ligand. Various color parameters of the complexes were calculated, and the determined CCT values suggest that the complexes may be used as warm light sources. The determined band gap values for the complexes are in the range of those for semiconductors, which suggest the application of present systems in the field of optoelectronics. The curve between the emission intensity and temperature for complex 1 shows a perfect linearity (χ2 = 0.99), which suggests that this complex can have potential application as a temperature sensor in the range 60–350 K. Optical stimulation in the red/near infrared range recently gained increasing interest, as a not‐invasive tool to control cardiac cell activity and repair in disease conditions. Translation of this approach to therapy is hampered by scarce efficacy and selectivity. The use of smart biocompatible materials, capable to act as local, NIR‐sensitive interfaces with cardiac cells, may represent a valuable solution, capable to overcome these limitations. In this work, a far red‐responsive conjugated polymer, namely poly[2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole‐4,7‐diyl[4,4‐bis(2‐ethylhexyl)−4H‐cyclopenta[2,1‐b:3,4‐b']dithiophene‐2,6‐diyl]] (PCPDTBT) is proposed for the realization of photoactive interfaces with cardiomyocytes derived from pluripotent stem cells (hPSC‐CMs). Optical excitation of the polymer turns into effective ionic and electrical modulation of hPSC‐CMs, in particular by fastening Ca2+ dynamics, inducing action potential shortening, accelerating the spontaneous beating frequency. The involvement in the phototransduction pathway of Sarco‐Endoplasmic Reticulum Calcium ATPase (SERCA) and Na+/Ca2+ exchanger (NCX) is proven by pharmacological assays and is correlated with physical/chemical processes occurring at the polymer surface upon photoexcitation. Very interestingly, an antiarrhythmogenic effect, unequivocally triggered by polymer photoexcitation, is also observed. Overall, red‐light excitation of conjugated polymers may represent an unprecedented opportunity for fine control of hPSC‐CMs functionality and can be considered as a perspective, noninvasive approach to treat arrhythmias. Strong interactions between excitons and photons lead to the formation of exciton‐polaritons, which possess different properties compared to their constituents. Polaritons are created by incorporating a dye in an optical cavity where the electromagnetic field is tightly confined. The interest in the subject has exploded in recent years due to the ability to change (photo)chemistry, but still as simple a variable as the yield of emission varies between studies. For the field to progress, linking observables to system parameters is a dire need. Here, the study pairs emission yield to the size of the so‐called exciton reservoir, which dictates polariton relaxation dynamics. To do this, a method is devised to experimentally control the relative size of the exciton reservoir and link it to the yield of emission. Thus, the results enable comparison of the photophysics of previous studies within the field and provide the tools to study the effect of the exciton reservoir on polariton photochemistry. Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) with unique structures from marine animals show intriguing pharmacological activities and negligible biological risks, providing more options for us to explore safer agents. The swim bladder is a tonic food and folk medicine, and its GAGs show good anticoagulant activity. In this study, two GAGs, CMG-1.0 and GMG-1.0, were extracted and isolated from the swim bladder of Cynoscion microlepidotus and Gadus morhua. The physicochemical properties, precise structural characteristics, and anticoagulant activities of these GAGs were determined for the first time. The analysis results of the CMG-1.0 and GMG-1.0 showed that they were chondroitin sulfate (CS)/dermatan sulfate (DS) hybrid chains with molecular weights of 109.3 kDa and 123.1 kDa, respectively. They were mainly composed of the repeating disaccharide unit of -{IdoA-α1,3-GalNAc4S-β1,4-}- (DS-A). The DS-B disaccharide unit of -{IdoA2S-α1,3-GalNAc4S-β1,4-}- also existed in both CMG-1.0 and GMG-1.0. CMG-1.0 had a higher proportion of CS-O disaccharide unit -{-GlcA-β1,3-GalNAc-β1,4-}- but a lower proportion of CS-E disaccharide unit -{-GlcA-β1,3-GalNAc4S6S-β1,4-}- than GMG-1.0. The disaccharide compositions of the GAGs varied in a species-specific manner. Anticoagulant activity assay revealed that both CMG-1.0 and GMG-1.0 had potent anticoagulant activity, which can significantly prolong activated partial thromboplastin time. GMG-1.0 also can prolong the thrombin time. CMG-1.0 showed no intrinsic tenase inhibition activity, while GMG-1.0 can obviously inhibit intrinsic tenase with EC50 of 58 nM. Their significantly different anticoagulant activities may be due to their different disaccharide structural units and proportions. Cannabis sativa contains minor cannabinoids that have potential therapeutic value in pain management. However, detailed experimental evidence for the antinociceptive effects of many of these minor cannabinoids remains lacking. Here, we employed artificial intelligence (AI) to perform compound–protein interaction estimates with cannabichromene (CBC) and receptors involved in nociceptive signaling. Based on our findings, we investigated the antinociceptive properties of CBC in naïve or neuropathic C57BL/6 male and female mice using von Frey (mechanical allodynia), tail-flick (noxious radiant heat), formalin (acute and persistent inflammatory pain), and acetone (cold thermal) tests. For von Frey assessments, CBC dose (0–20 mg/kg, i.p.) and time (0–6 h) responses were measured in male and female neuropathic mice. For tail-flick, formalin, and acetone assays, CBC (20 mg/kg, i.p.) was administered to naïve male and female mice 1 h prior to testing. The results show that CBC (10 and 20 mg/kg, i.p.) significantly reduced mechanical allodynia in neuropathic male and female mice 1–2 h after treatment. Additionally, CBC treatment caused significant reductions in nociceptive behaviors in the tail-flick assay and in both phase 1 and phase 2 of the formalin test. Finally, we found a significant interaction in neuropathic male mice in the acetone test. In conclusion, our results suggest that CBC targets receptors involved in nociceptive signaling and imparts antinociceptive properties that may benefit males and females afflicted with diverse forms of acute or chronic/persistent pain. The aim of this study was to determine the difficulties experienced by disabled children and their mothers due to the necessity of being at home during the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) process. The research is a qualitatively prepared phenomenological-type descriptive study. "Content analysis" was used in the analysis of the interview questions. Semi-structured interview technique was used as the data collection method. It was determined that the disabled child lost the skills he learned during the COVID-19 process; his health was adversely affected; there were disruptions in the education process; behavioral problems began; and he experienced social isolation. As a result, it can be said that both children with disabilities and mothers who care for them try to cope with many difficulties during the COVID-19 process and they are left alone and do not receive support during this process. The article "All by myself? Testing descriptive social norm-nudges to increase flood preparedness among homeowners" examines the effectiveness of social norm-nudges in promoting flood preparedness among homeowners. The study conducted an online experiment with homeowners in two European countries and tested different norm-nudge messages. The results showed no evidence of a treatment effect, suggesting that the social norm-nudges did not influence flood preparedness. The study highlights the importance of tailoring norm-nudges to specific populations and contexts and calls for further research in the field of natural disaster risk reduction. About 70 percent of the entire world is covered by seas and oceans thereby maintaining a more diverse ecosystem compared to that of the landmass. Apart from being the key role player in ecological functions, it also plays an important role in the following areas of food security, feeds for livestock, raw materials for medicine, building materials, natural defence against natural calamities and many more. This review mainly focuses on the different types of versatile marine biopolysaccharides and their uses in various sectors, including the food industry, pharmaceutical industry, bioremediation, wastewater treatment, cosmetics, biomedical applications, agriculture and catalysis. The marine biopolysaccharides of focus in this review article are agar, alginate, carrageenan, chitin, chitosan and glycosaminoglycans which includes heparan sulphate, chondroitin sulphate and also marine-based sources of natural bioprotein collagen and its applications. Emphasis is given to the nanomaterials which can be obtained from the above-mentioned marine biopolysaccharides and its application in various fields. Overall, the report covers the important biopolysaccharides obtained from marine resources that are abundant in nature, which can be of more interest shortly. Molecular layer deposition (MLD) is an incredibly powerful and flexible tool for designing completely new materials with novel and unique properties. The low temperature layer‐by‐layer approach and the use of highly reactive reactants allows one to combine vastly different organic and inorganic species and construct nanostructures with subnanometer precision. If not limited by the volatility of the reactants involved, the possibilities will be endless. This is most notable for the organic building blocks where an overall low volatility severely limits the toolbox of large molecules with interesting optical and electrical properties such as red‐ox activity and optical conversion. In this work, different strategies for molecular design of large molecules are investigated that allow vaporization while still having the necessary reactivity for MLD growth. Using these strategies, film growth with perylene and porphyrin derivatives, both molecules well known for their functional and optical properties are successfully achieved. With this knowledge, there is an opening to include much larger and more complex organic molecules into the world of vapor phase chemistry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
