Abstract

The acquisition of signals from liquid scintillators with Flash ADC of high sampling rate ð 1G S=sÞ has been investigated. The possibility to record the signal waveform is of great advantage in studies with g’s and neutrons in a high count-rate environment, as it allows to easily identify and separate pile-up events. The shapes of pulses produced by g-rays and neutrons have been studied for two different liquid scintillators, NE213 and C6D6: A 1-parameter fitting procedure is proposed, which allows to extract information on the particle type and energy. The performance of this method in terms of energy resolution and n=g discrimination is analyzed, together with the capability to identify and resolve pile-up events. r 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract

The neutron Time-of-Flight facility at CERN was built to measure the neutron capture and fission cross sections. A short description of the facility, the detectors and the data analysis techniques will be illustrated. A short review of the preliminary results on the fission cross sections is presented together with the implications in fundamental nuclear physics and in nuclear technologies. Abstract

The U233(n,f) cross section has been measured at the white neutron source n-TOF in a wide energy range with a dedicated fission ionization chamber. We report here the results from ∼30 meV to 1 MeV neutron energy. The U233(n,f) cross section has been determined relative to a reference sample of U235(n,f) measured simultaneously with the same detector. The very high instantaneous neutron flux and the intrinsically low background of the n-TOF installation result in an accuracy around 3% in the whole energy range, while the energy resolution of the neutron beam allows for an accurate description of the fission cross section by means of R-matrix analysis over a wide energy range. The results are, in general, in good agreement with the most recent high-accuracy measurement of this fission cross section, over the more limited range of the previous measurements, and indicated that even the latest evaluations underestimate the cross section in the epithermal region. The present high-quality data provide the basis for a more precise evaluation of the U233 fission cross section and for improving the reliability of databases needed for the design of new energy systems based on the Th/U cycle. © 2009 The American Physical Society

Abstract

The n_TOF Collaboration has built and commissioned a high-performance detector for (n, gamma) measurements called the Total Absorption Calorimeter (TAC). The TAC was especially designed for measuring neutron capture cross-sections of low-mass and/or radioactive samples with the accuracy required for nuclear technology and stellar nucleosynthesis. We present a detailed description of the TAC and discuss its overall performance in terms of energy and time resolution, background discrimination, detection efficiency and neutron sensitivity. Abstract

The reduced transition probability $B(E2;{0}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{2}^{+})$ has been measured for the neutron-rich nucleus $^{74}\mathrm{Ni}$ in an intermediate energy Coulomb excitation experiment performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University. The obtained $B(E2;{0}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{2}^{+})=64{2}_{\ensuremath{-}226}^{+216}\text{ }\text{ }{e}^{2}\text{ }{\mathrm{fm}}^{4}$ value defines a trend which is unexpectedly small if referred to $^{70}\mathrm{Ni}$ and to a previous indirect determination of the transition strength in $^{74}\mathrm{Ni}$. This indicates a reduced polarization of the $Z=28$ core by the valence neutrons. Calculations in the $pfgd$ model space reproduce well the experimental result indicating that the $B(E2)$ strength predominantly corresponds to neutron excitations. The ratio of the neutron and proton multipole matrix elements supports such an interpretation.

Abstract

Background: The design of new nuclear reactors and transmutation devices requires to reduce the present neutron cross section uncertainties of minor actinides. Purpose: Improvement of the 243Am(n,? ) cross section uncertainty. Method: The 243Am(n,? ) cross section has been measured at the n_TOF facility at CERN with a BaF2 total absorption calorimeter, in the energy range between 0.7 eV and 2.5 keV. Results: The 243Am(n,? ) cross section has been successfully measured in the mentioned energy range. The resolved resonance region has been extended from 250 eV up to 400 eV. In the unresolved resonance region our results are compatible with one of the two incompatible capture data sets available below 2.5 keV. The data available in EXFOR and in the literature have been used to perform a simple analysis above 2.5 keV. Conclusions: The results of this measurement contribute to reduce the 243Am(n,? ) cross section uncertainty and suggest that this cross section is underestimated up to 25% in the neutron energy range between 50 eV and a few keV in the present evaluated data libraries.

Abstract

The observation of $^{26}$Al gives us the proof of active nucleosynthesis in the Milky Way. However the identification of the main producers of $^{26}$Al is still a matter of debate. Many sites have been proposed, but our poor knowledge of the nuclear processes involved introduces high uncertainties. In particular, the limited accuracy on the $^{25}$Mg($\alpha$,n)$^{28}$Si reaction cross section has been identified as the main source of nuclear uncertainty in the production of $^{26}$Al in C/Ne explosive burning in massive stars, which has been suggested to be the main source of $^{26}$Al in the Galaxy. We studied this reaction through neutron spectroscopy at the CN Van de Graaff accelerator of the Legnaro National Laboratories. Thanks to this technique we are able to discriminate the ($\alpha$,n) events from possible contamination arising from parasitic reactions. In particular, we measured the neutron angular distributions at 5 different beam energies (between 3 and 5 MeV) in the \ang{17.5}-\ang{106} laboratory system angular range. Abstract

"Beta Beams" produce collimated pure electron (anti-) neutrino beams by accelerating beta active ions to high energies and having them decay in a race track shaped storage ring of 7 km circumference, the Decay Ring. EUROnu Beta Beams are based on CERN infrastructures and existing machines. Using existing machines may be an advantage for the cost evaluation, however, this choice is also constraining the Beta Beams. The isotope pair of choice for the Beta Beam is 6He and 18Ne. However before the EUROnu studies one of the needed isotopes, 18Ne, could not be produced in rates that satisfy the needs for physics reach of the Beta Beam. Therefore, studies of alternative beta emitters, 8Li and 8B, with properties interesting for a Beta Beam have been proposed and have been studied within EUROnu. These alternative isotopes could be produced by using a small storage ring, in which the beam traverses a target, creating the 8Li and 8B isotopes. This Production Ring, the injection Linac and the target system have been evaluated. Measurements of the cross-section of the reactions to produce the Beta Beam isotopes show interesting results. A device to collect the produced isotopes from the target has been developed and tested. However, the obtained rates of the 8Li and 8B, using the Production Ring for production of 8Li and 8B, is not yet, according to simulations, giving the rates of isotopes that would be needed. Therefore, a new method of producing the 18Ne isotope has been developed and tested giving good production rates. The baseline presented for the Beta Beam is therefore now to use the 6He and 18Ne isotopes for neutrino production. A 60 GHz ECRIS prototype, the first in the world, was developed and tested with contributions from EUROnu. The Beta Beam has to take into account the modifications of the injectors planned in view of LHC-upgrades. The Decay Ring lattices for the 8Li and 8B have been developed, the lattice for 6He and 18Ne has been optimized also to ensure the high intensity ion beam stability.

Abstract

The reduced transition probability B(E2;0(+)→2(+)) has been measured for the neutron-rich nucleus (74)Ni in an intermediate energy Coulomb excitation experiment performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University. The obtained B(E2;0(+)→2(+))=642(-226)(+216) e(2) fm(4) value defines a trend which is unexpectedly small if referred to (70)Ni and to a previous indirect determination of the transition strength in (74)Ni. This indicates a reduced polarization of the Z=28 core by the valence neutrons. Calculations in the pfgd model space reproduce well the experimental result indicating that the B(E2) strength predominantly corresponds to neutron excitations. The ratio of the neutron and proton multipole matrix elements supports such an interpretation.

Abstract

The neutron-induced fission cross section of U234 has been measured at the CERN n-TOF facility relative to the standard fission cross section of U235 from 20 keV to 1.4 MeV and of U238 from 1.4 to 200 MeV. A fast ionization chamber (FIC) was used as a fission fragment detector with a detection efficiency of no less than 97%. The high instantaneous flux and the low background characterizing the n-TOF facility resulted in wide-energy-range data (0.02 to 200 MeV), with high energy resolution, high statistics, and systematic uncertainties bellow 3%. Previous investigations around the energy of the fission threshold revealed structures attributed to β-vibrational levels, which have been confirmed by the present measurements. Theoretical calculations have been performed, employing the talys code with model parameters tuned to fairly reproduce the experimental data. © 2014 American Physical Society.

Abstract

An experimental campaign has been undertaken at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy, in order to progress in our understanding of the statistical properties of light nuclei at excitation energies above particle emission threshold, by measuring exclusive data from fusion-evaporation reactions. A first reaction 12C+12C at 7.9 AMeV beam energy has been measured, using the GARFIELD+Ring Counter experimental setup. Fusion-evaporation events have been exclusively selected. The comparison to a dedicated Hauser-Feshbach calculation allows us to give constraints on the nuclear level density at high excitation energy for light systems ranging from C up to Mg. Out-of-equilibrium emission has been evidenced and attributed both to entrance channel effects favoured by the cluster nature of reaction partners and, in more dissipative events, to the persistence of cluster correlations well above the 24Mg threshold for 6 alphas decay. The 24Mg compound nucleus has been studied with a new measurement 14N + 10B at 5.7 AMeV. The comparison between the two datasets would allow us to further constrain the level density of light nuclei. Abstract

A theoretical approach was developed to describe secondary particle emission in heavy ion collisions, with special regards to pre-equilibrium {\alpha}-particle production. Griffin's model of non-equilibrium processes is used to account for the first stage of the compound system formation, while a Monte Carlo statistical approach was used to describe the further decay from a hot source at thermal equilibrium. The probabilities of neutron, proton and {\alpha}-particle emission have been evaluated for both the equilibrium and pre-equilibrium stages of the process. Fission and {\gamma}-ray emission competition were also considered after equilibration. Effects due the possible cluster structure of the projectile which has been excited during the collisions have been experimentally evidenced studying the double differential cross sections of p and {\alpha}-particles emitted in the E=250MeV 16O +116Sn reaction. Abstract

The SPES Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) facility at INFN-LNL is in the construction phase. It is based on the ISOL method with an UCx Direct Target able to sustain a power of 10 kW. The primary proton beam is delivered by a high current Cyclotron accelerator, with energy 35-70 MeV and a beam current of 0.2-0.5 mA. Neutron-rich radioactive ions will be produced by proton induced Uranium fission in the UCx target at an expected fission rate in the order of 10 13 fissions per second. The exotic isotopes will be re-accelerated by the ALPI superconducting LINAC at energies of 10A MeV and higher, for masses in the region A=130 amu at expected rate on the secondary target of 10 7 - 10 9 pps. The SPES project has the aim to provide high intensity and high- quality beams of neutron-rich nuclei as well as to develop an interdisciplinary research center based on the cyclotron proton beam.

Abstract

OPEN ACCESS; International audience; Latest results concerning the study of central collisions in 58Ni+48Ca reactions at Elab(Ni)=25 AMeV are presented. The experimental data, collected with the CHIMERA 4π device, have been analyzed in order to investigate the competition among different reaction mechanisms for central collisions in the Fermi energy domain. The method adopted to perform the centrality selection refers to the global variable "flow angle", that is related to the event shape in momentum space, as it is determined by the eigenvectors of the experimental kinetic-energy tensor. The main features of the reaction products were explored by using different constraints on some of the relevant observables, such as mass and velocity distributions and their correlations. Much emphasis was devoted to the competition between fusion-evaporation processes with subsequent identification of a heavy residue and a prompt multifragmentation mechanism. The reaction mechanism was simulated in the framework of transport theories (dynamical stochastic BNV calculations, followed by sequential SIMON code) and further comparison with dynamical calculations from transport model (QMD, CoMD) are in progress. Moreover, an extension of this study taking into account for the light particles has been envisaged.

Abstract

The cross section of the $^{62}\mathrm{Ni}$($n,\ensuremath{\gamma}$) reaction was measured with the time-of-flight technique at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN. Capture kernels of 42 resonances were analyzed up to 200 keV neutron energy and Maxwellian averaged cross sections (MACS) from $kT=$ 5--100 keV were calculated. With a total uncertainty of $4.5$%, the stellar cross section is in excellent agreement with the the KADoNiS compilation at $kT=30$ keV, while being systematically lower up to a factor of 1.6 at higher stellar temperatures. The cross section of the $^{63}\mathrm{Ni}$($n,\ensuremath{\gamma}$) reaction was measured for the first time at n_TOF. We determined unresolved cross sections from 10 to 270 keV with a systematic uncertainty of 17%. These results provide fundamental constraints on $s$-process production of heavier species, especially the production of Cu in massive stars, which serve as the dominant source of Cu in the solar system.

Abstract

SUMMARY The overall thermo-hygro-mechanical behavior of concrete is to be investigated, because its bearing capacity is required together with its shielding properties, specifically when concrete structures are exposed to high-energy neutron fluxes, which represent the next generation facilities designed for the production of high energy radioactive ion beams in physics research. Irradiation in the form of either fast and thermal neutrons, primary gamma rays or gamma rays produced as a result of neutron capture, are learnt to affect concrete as well as neutron fluences of the order of 1019 n/cm2 and gamma radiation doses of 1010 rad seem to become critical for concrete strength. The collection of data on concrete samples, variously exposed to neutron radiation, has allowed for defining a law for radiation damage within the FEM research code NEWCON3D, assessing the 3D coupled thermo-hygro-mechanical behavior of concrete, modeled as a multiphase porous medium, both at the macroscale and the mesoscale level. The required damage law is thought to be a function of the neutron flux impinging the concrete shielding wall, and a good estimate of this quantity has been provided by means of a Monte Carlo code developed by CERN and the National Institute of Nuclear Physics of Milan, Italy; this code handles radiation transport calculations and represents at this day one of the most reliable procedures for dealing with the interaction of radiation and matter. The suggested procedure for the radiation damage evaluation has allowed for discussing on differences between mesolevel and macrolevel approaches. Stochastic contour maps of the expected radiation field, properly interfaced with the numerical FE code, have allowed for obtaining a more precise evaluation of the radiation damage front as well as its evolution in time. Abstract

We present the analysis of the resolved resonance region for the 234U(n,f) cross section data measured at the CERN n TOF facility. The resonance parameters in the energy range from 1 eV to 1500 eV have been obtained with the SAMMY code by using as initial parameters for the fit the resonance parameters of the JENDL-3.3 evaluation. In addition, the statistical analysis has been accomplished, partly with the SAMDIST code, in order to study the level spacing and the Mehta-Dyson correlation.

Abstract

The SPES Radioactive Ion Beam facility at INFN-LNL is presently in the construction phase. The facility is based on the Isol (Isotope separation on-line) method with an UCx Direct Target able to sustain a power of 10 kW. The primary proton beam is provided by a high current Cyclotron accelerator with energy of 35-70 MeV and a beam current of 0.20.5 mA. Neutron-rich radioactive ions are produced by proton induced Uranium fission at an expected fission rate of the order of 1013 fissions per second. After ionization and selection the exotic isotopes are re-accelerated by the ALPI superconducting Linac at energies of 10A MeV for masses in the region A = 130 amu. The expected secondary beam rates are of the order of 107 ? 109 pps. Aim of the SPES project is to provide a facility for high intensity radioactive ion beams for nuclear physics research as well as to develop an interdisciplinary research center based on the cyclotron proton beam.

Abstract

The detection of the 1809 keV emission line associated with the decay of 26 Al in the interstellar medium provides a direct evidence of recent nucleosynthesis events in our galaxy. 26 Al is thought to be mainly produced in massive stars, but in order to have a quantita- tive understanding of the 26 Al distribution, the cross section of all the nuclear reactions involved in its production should be accurately known. A recent sensitivity study demonstrated that the 25 Mg( ,n) 28 Si is the reaction with the strongest impact on the synthesis of 26 Al during explosive Neon and Carbon burning (4). In order to improve the experimental knowledge of the 25 Mg( ,n) 28 Si cross section, a new direct measurement has been performed at Legnaro National Laboratories. The experimental setup, the data analysis and preliminary results are discussed.

Abstract

Neutron detectors are extensively used at many nuclear research facilities across Europe. Their application range covers many topics in basic and applied nuclear research: in nuclear structure and reaction dynamics (reaction reconstruction and decay studies); in nuclear astrophysics (neutron emission probabilities); in nuclear technology (nuclear data measurements and in-core/off-core monitors); in nuclear medicine (radiation monitors, dosimeters); in materials science (neutron imaging techniques); in homeland security applications (fissile materials investigation and cargo inspection). Liquid scintillators, widely used at present, have however some drawbacks given by toxicity, flammability, volatility and sensitivity to oxygen that limit their duration and quality. Even plastic scintillators are not satisfactory because they have low radiation hardness and low thermal stability. Moreover organic solvents may affect their optical properties due to crazing. In order to overcome these problems, phenyl-polysiloxane based scintillators have been recently developed at Legnaro National Laboratory. This new solution showed very good chemical and thermal stability and high radiation hardness. The results on the different samples performance will be presented, paying special attention to a characterization comparison between synthesized phenyl containing polysiloxane resins where a Pt catalyst has been used and a scintillating material obtained by condensation reaction, where tin based compounds are used as catalysts. Different structural arrangements as a result of different substituents on the main chain have been investigated by High Resolution X-Ray Diffraction, while the effect of improved optical transmittance on the scintillation yield has been elucidated by a combination of excitation/fluorescence measurements and scintillation yield under exposure to alpha and \(\upgamma \)-rays.

Abstract

The production procedure and the scintillation characteristics of thin polyimide films containing rhodamine B are reported. Fluorinated polyimide has been chosen as host matrix for its well known radiation hardness, in order to improve the lifetime of detector systems based on plastic thin film scintillators, 6FDA (4,4'-hertafluoroisopropylidene diphthalic anhydride) and DAB (diaminobenzophenone) have been used as polyimide precursor monomers. The samples have been cured in air at temperatures ranging from 80/spl deg/C up to 250/spl deg/C. The scintillation spectra have been collected by irradiating the samples with a 5.478 MeV alpha particle source and their shape and intensity have been investigated as a function of dopant concentration and curing temperature.

Abstract

The neutron capture cross section of (206)Pb has been measured at the CERN n_TOF spectrometer using a setup of two C(6)D(6) detectors. In the energy interval from 1 eV to 600 keV the cross section is dominated by resonances, which were analyzed via the R-matrix analysis code SAMMY. In the relevant energy ranges for stellar nucleosynthesis, i. e., at thermal energies of kT = 8 keV and kT = 23 keV, the present Maxwellian average cross section differs by 20% and 9% from the recommended values of Bao et al respectively. From the new cross section the s-abundance of (206)Pb could be reliably determined as 70( 4)%. This result is of importance in order to test and constrain r-process abundance calculations in the actinide region, because the r-process portion of (206)Pb is dominated by alpha-back decays of short-lived transbismuth isotopes.

Abstract

Signals of bimodality have been investigated in experimental data of quasi-projectile decay produced in Au+Au collisions at 35 AMeV. This same data set was already shown to provide several signals characteristic of a first order, liquid-gas-like phase transition. Different event sortings proposed in the recent literature are analyzed. Abstract

The odd-even staggering of the yield of final reaction products has been studied as a function of proton (Z) and neutron (N ) numbers for the collisions 84 Kr + 112 Sn and 84 Kr + 124 Sn at 35 MeV/nucleon in a wide range of elements (up to Z ≈ 20). The experimental data show that staggering effects rapidly decrease with increasing size of the fragments. Moreover the staggering in N is definitely larger than the one in Z. Similar general features are qualitatively reproduced by the GEMINI code. Concerning the comparison of the two systems, the staggering in N is in general rather similar, being slightly larger only for the lightest fragments produced in the n-rich system. In contrast the staggering in Z, although smaller than that in N , is sizably larger for the n-poor system with respect to the n-rich one.

The wide energy range and the high neutron flux per time-of-flight burst result in a much enhanced signal to background ratio for neutron capture of radioactive isotopes and makes this facility well suited for the measurement of high quality neutron-induced reaction cross-sections., Neutrons are created by spallation reactions induced by a pulsed 20 GeV/c proton beam impinging on a lead target. A 5 cm water slab surrounding the lead target serves as a coolant and at the same time as a moderator of the spallation neutron spectrum, providing a wide energy spectrum from 0.1 eV to about 250 MeV., By the end of 2005, a first phase of data taking has been successfully terminated. Fission and capture experiments have been performed on a variety of isotopes of interest for nuclear astrophysics, advanced nuclear technologies and for basic nuclear physics., The instrumentation developed for this facility consists of parallel plate avalanche counter and fission ionization chamber detectors for the fission experiments and of low mass C6D6 detectors and a 4 pi BaF2 total absorption calorimeter for capture experiments. A new data acquisition system, based on sampling of the detector signals, has been developed to cope with the high count rates and to minimize the effective dead time to only a few tens of nanosecond., A second phase of data taking is planned to start in 2007, after an upgrade of the spallation target. On the longer term, the construction of a flight path at 20 in resulting in an increased neutron flux of about a factor of 100 opens new possibilities.

Abstract

The radiative neutron capture cross section of 207Pb has been measured at the CERN neutron time of flight installation n_TOF using the pulse height weighting technique in the resolved energy region. The measurement has been performed with an optimized setup of two C6D6 scintillation detectors, which allowed us to reduce scattered neutron backgrounds down to a negligible level. Resonance parameters and radiative kernels have been determined for 16 resonances by means of an R-matrix analysis in the neutron energy range from 3 keV to 320 keV. Good agreement with previous measurements was found at low neutron energies, whereas substantial discrepancies appear beyond 45 keV. With the present results, we obtain an s-process contribution of 77(8)% to the solar abundance of 207Pb. This corresponds to an r-process component of 23(8)%, which is important for deriving the U/Th ages of metal poor halo stars., 7 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev. C

Abstract

The gamma decay of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) in the 132Ce compound nucleus with temperature up to approximately 4 MeV has been measured, using the reaction 64Ni + 68Zn at E(beam) = 300, 400, and 500 MeV. The gamma and charged particles measured in coincidence with recoils are consistent with a fully equilibrated compound nucleus emission. The GDR width, obtained with the statistical model analysis, is found to increase almost linearly with temperature. This increase is rather well reproduced within a model including thermal shape fluctuations and the lifetime of the compound nucleus.

Abstract

The excited nuclear systems formed in heavy ion collisions can be studied from a thermodynamical point of view. Charged finite systems have different behaviors with respect to infinite ones. After experimental selection of such equilibrated systems the extraction of thermodynamic coordinates is performed. Different signals compatible with a liquid-gas phase transition have been obtained. In particular a bimodal distribution of the asymmetry between the first two heaviest fragments is presented. Abnormally large fluctuations, which in thermodynamic equilibrium are associated to a negative branch of the heat capacity give indications of a first order phase transition. Perspectives for new generation experiments are indicated.

Abstract

A series of neutron capture cross section measurements of interest to nuclear astrophysics have been recently performed at n_TOF, the neutron spallation source operating at CERN. The low repetition frequency of the proton beam driver, the extremely high instantaneous neutron flux, and the low background conditions in the experimental area are optimal for capture cross section measurements on low-mass or radioactive samples. Abstract

The γ -decay of the GDR in the 132Ce compound nuclei produced by the reaction 64Ni+68Zn at Ebeam = 300 MeV, 400 MeV, 500 MeV (E-beam of 100 MeV, 150 MeV and 200 MeV) has been measured. We have detected heavy recoil nuclei, light charged particles and γ -rays. The data obtained with the symmetric reaction 64Ni+68Zn indicate emission from a fully equilibrated compound nucleus as deduced from the analysis of charged particle spectra. The GDR parameters are found to be consistent with the predictions of the thermal fluctuation model.

Abstract

The 151 Sm(n, γ ) 152 Sm cross section, which is important for the interpretation of the 151 Sm branching as an s -process thermometer, was measured from 1 eV up to 1 MeV at the innovative n_TOF facility at CERN. Based on these data, the Maxwellian-averaged cross section at k T = 30 keV is found to be 3100±160 mb. This value can be used to constrain the thermodynamical conditions in Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars during He-shell burning.

Abstract

Neutron capture cross sections of the 90,91,92,94,96Zr have been measured over the energy range from 1 eV to 1 MeV at the spallation neutron facility n TOF at CERN in 2003. The innovative features of the neutron beam, in particular the high instantaneous flux, the high energy resolution and low background, together with improvements of the neutron sensitivity of the capture detectors make this facility unique for neutron-induced reaction cross section measurements with much improved accuracy. The preliminary results of the Zr measurements show capture resonance strengths generally smaller than in previous measurements.

Abstract

We establish, within the framework of the statistical multifragmentation model, the connection between the caloric curve and the analysis of conditional moments. In particular, we show that the conditional moments of fragment charge distributions peak at the region where the curve temperature versus excitation energy shows a plateau assumed to be a signature of a phase transition. Furthermore, we show that the slopes of the moments at the peak are not influenced by secondary decay after the first breakup of the nucleus. @S0556-2813~98!04901-2#

Abstract

The connection between the thermodynamics of charged finite nuclear systems and the asymptotically measured partitions in heavy ion collisions is discussed. Different independent signals compatible with a liquid-to-gas-like phase transition are reported. In particular abnormally large fluctuations in the measured observables are presented as a strong evidence of a first order phase transition with negative heat capacity.

Abstract

The connection between the thermodynamics of charged finite nuclear systems and the asymptotically measured partitions is presented. Some open questions, concerning in particular equilibrium partitions are discussed. We show a detailed comparison of the decay patterns in Au+ C,Cu,Au central collisions and in Au quasi-projectile events. Energetic proton emission was investigated in the reaction 58 Ni+ 58 Ni at 30 AMeV and compared with the results of dynamical calculations with a momentum dependent mean field. Preliminary results on proton and intermediate mass fragment coincidences are also presented.

Abstract

The breakup temperatures for central $\mathrm{Au}+\mathrm{Au}$ collisions at $35A\mathrm{MeV}$ have been determined from the relative populations of excited states of ${}^{5}\mathrm{Li}$, ${}^{4}\mathrm{He}$, and ${}^{10}\mathrm{B}$ fragments and nine double ratios involving the yields of elements with $1\ensuremath{\le}Z\ensuremath{\le}6$. Unlike results reported at significantly higher energies, all thermometers yield temperatures that are consistent within the experimental uncertainties. Extrapolation of the data to zero impact parameter yields ${T}_{\mathrm{em}}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}4.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4\mathrm{MeV}$, somewhat lower than the temperature assumed in statistical multifragmentation model calculations which describe most of the other features of this reaction.

Abstract

We report on the first prototypes of hybrid detectors for neutrons from the INFN HYDE project. Devices consist of 3D silicon sensors coupled to PolySiloxane-based converters. The sensor design and fabrication technology are presented, along with initial results from the functional characterization of the devices in response to radioactive sources and neutron beams of different energies.

Abstract

Dissipative 12C+12C reactions at 95 MeV are fully detected in charge with the GARFIELD and RCo apparatuses at LNL. A comparison to a dedicated Hauser-Feshbach calculation allows to select events which correspond, to a large extent, to the statistical evaporation of highly excited 24Mg, as well as to extract information on the isotopic distribution of the evaporation residues in coincidence with their complete evaporation chain. Residual deviations from a statistical behaviour are observed in \alpha yields and attributed to the persistence of cluster correlations well above the 24Mg threshold for 6 \alpha's decay.

Abstract

Isospin transport phenomena in dissipative heavy ion collisions have been in- vestigated at Fermi energies with a beam of 84 Kr at 35AMeV. A comparison of theh Ni /Z of light and medium products forward-emitted in the centre of mass frame when the beam impinges on two different targets, the n-poor 112 Sn and the n-rich 124 Sn, is presented. Data were collected by means of a three-layer telescope with very good performances in terms of mass identification (full isotopic resolution up to Z�20 for ions punching through the first detector layer) built by the FAZIA Collaboration and located just beyond the grazing angle for both reactions. Theh Ni /Z of the products detected when the n-rich target is used is always higher than that associated to the n-poor one; since the detector was able to measure only fragments coming from the QuasiProjectile decay and/or neck emission, the observed behaviour can be ascribed to the isospin diffusion process, driven by the isospin gradient between QuasiProjectile and QuasiTarget. Moreover, for light fragments theh Ni /Z as a function of the lab velocity of the fragment is observed to increase when we move from the QuasiProjectile velocity to the centre of mass (neck zone). This effect can be interpreted as an evidence of isospin drift driven by the density gradient between the QuasiProjectile zone (at normal density) and the more diluted neck zone.

Abstract

The (n,γ) reaction of the radioactive isotope 93Zr has been measured at the n-TOF high-resolution time-of-flight facility at CERN. Resonance parameters have been extracted in the neutron energy range up to 8 keV, yielding capture widths smaller (14%) than reported in an earlier experiment. These results are important for detailed nucleosynthesis calculations and for refined studies of waste transmutation concepts. © 2013 American Physical Society.

Abstract

International audience; The experimental data concerning the Ni-58+Ca-48 reaction at E-lab(Ni)=25A MeV, collected by the CHIMERA 4 pi device, have been analyzed in order to investigate the competition among different reaction mechanisms for central collisions in the Fermi energy domain. The method adopted to select such central collisions, by means of construction of the kinetic energy tensor and, consequently, the evaluation of the "flow angle" event by event is presented. Some global variables, able to characterize the pattern of central collisions, have been constructed, and the main features of the reaction products are analyzed in terms of some observable, like mass and velocity distributions, as well as their correlations. Much emphasis was devoted to the competition between fusion-evaporation processes with consequent identification of a heavy residue and multifragmentation of a well defined (if any) transient nuclear system formed in central collisions.
