Con el objetivo de evaluar los efectos de los sistemas de cultivo-arboles- pastos sobre el rendimiento de maíz y frijol, y la calidad de suelo, en la micro cuenca Tecomapa, fueron establecidas cinco parcelas experimentales: quema tradicional (Q); sistema agroforestal Quesungual (SAQ); bosque secundario (Bs); potreros mejorados con Brachiaria sp - Marandú, (Pm); y sistema silvopastoril (SSP). En las cuales, dos sub parcelas localizadas en la parte alta y baja del relieve fueron establecidas para evaluar calidad de suelo y la erosión laminar, en 2011, 2012 y 2013. Como resultado, la tasa de erosión fuera de la parcela, únicamente ocurrió en el sistema de quema (Q) con 28.3 t ha-1 a-1. La tasa de erosión dentro de la parcela fue moderada 31.98 y 42.97 t ha-1 a-1, en los sistemas BS y Pm, y alta 62.97 y 121.79 t ha-1 a-1, en los sistemas SAQ y SSP. La calidad de los suelos fue infl uenciada por los contenidos de materia orgánica en el suelo (MOS) mayores a 4000 kg ha-1 en los sistemas SAQ, SSP y Bs. Este indicador fue correlacionado negativamente con el incremento de arcilla en el horizonte superfi cial de los suelos con pastura. Finalmente, los indicadores de calidad de suelo asociados al rendimiento del cultivo de maíz y frijol fueron el espesor orgánico de suelo, las tasas de infi ltraciones rápidas, y la erosión de suelos.

Atmospheric emissions from vessels at 38 Pacific and Gulf-Caribbean Mexican ports were determined for nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, particulates, carbon monoxide, non-methane volatile organic compounds, and carbon dioxide. The emissions have been estimated using a bottom-up methodology in the maneuver and hoteling phases, by vessel type, from 2005 to 2020. Maritime traffic in Mexico’s Pacific zone contributes approximately with 60% of the country’s total ship emissions, with the remaining 40% in Gulf-Caribbean ports. The highest atmospheric emissions were found at the Manzanillo and Lázaro Cárdenas ports on the Pacific coast, as well as the Altamira and Veracruz ports on the Gulf-Caribbean coast. The contribution of the atmospheric emissions by vessel type at Pacific ports was Container 67%, Bulk Carrier 32%, Tanker 0.8%, and RoRo 0.4%. For Gulf-Caribbean ports it was Container 76%, Bulk Carrier 19%, Tanker 3%, and RoRo 2%. This study incorporates the International Maritime Organization implementations on reductions of sulfur content in marine fuel, from 4.5% mass by mass from 2005 to 2011, to 3.5% from 2012 to 2019, to 0.5% beginning in 2020. Overall, sulfur dioxide emissions were reduced by 89%. The plenty of testimonies that he gives, his technical appreciations and the creation of new musical terms make him an important link in the scope of the ancient music. His interest in the detail is made evident in the description concerning songs and, especially, musical instruments.

Among existing natural disasters, earthquakes have historically caused the most outstanding damage and human losses. The destructive impact of an earthquake depends on its magnitude, and the vulnerability and the resilience of the population. Therefore, in order to minimise its consequences, prevention and resilience should be improved. In fact, the minimisation of the geological and geotechnical risks associated with natural disasters has become one of the main challenges of European and national policies, especially after the damage caused by recent earthquakes in Europe. Rigorous seismic vulnerability analyses to enhance the behaviour of buildings can help to reduce the seismic damage, the human losses and the economic impact due to future seismic events This thesis addresses this challenge by establishing two main objectives: i) to assess the seismic vulnerability of RC buildings focusing on primary school buildings located in the southwestern Iberian Peninsula, particularly the Algarve-Huelva region; and ii) to develop specific seismic retrofitting methods for the schools to improve their seismic behaviour and to reduce their expected seismic damage. It has focused on the study of RC primary school buildings in southwestern Spain due to their vulnerability: i) a major part of them was constructed with RC structures prior to restrictive seismic codes (i.e., aseismic design, low-quality structural materials, reinforcement ratios, among others); ii) the considerable seismic hazard of the area, characterised by far away earthquakes of a long-return period and large-very large magnitude; iii) the low/adult child ratio and the post-traumatic stress and depressive disorders that children can suffer from after surviving an earthquake. To do so, first, the seismic hazard of the Algarve-Huelva area has been analysed. This study has revealed considerable differences in the seismic codes of Spain and Portugal, particularly in the definition of the response spectra. La capacidad destructiva de un terremoto depende de su magnitud, la vulnerabilidad de las construcciones y la capacidad de recuperación de la población. Por tanto, para minimizar sus consecuencias, se debe mejorar la prevención y la resiliencia. De hecho, la minimización de los riesgos geológicos y geotécnicos debidos asociados a desastres naturales se ha convertido en uno de los principales retos de diversas políticas europeas y nacionales. Este interés se ha acrecentado debido a los efectos catastróficos de recientes terremotos sufridos en Europa. En este contexto, los análisis de vulnerabilidad sísmica rigurosos permiten mejorar el comportamiento de los edificios para así reducir el daño sísmico, las pérdidas humanas y el impacto económico de futuros eventos sísmicos. Esta tesis pretende dar respuesta a este problema centrándose en dos objetivos: i) evaluar la vulnerabilidad sísmica de los colegios de educación primaria de hormigón armado (HA) localizados en el suroeste de la península Ibérica, en particular, en la región Algarve-Huelva; ii) desarrollar métodos específicos de refuerzo sísmico para que los colegios mejoren su comportamiento sísmico y se reduzca el daño sísmico esperado. - Abstract
Ascidians form aggregations in soft bottoms, thereby creating a complex habitat and increasing the biodiversity by providing new substrates, food, and refuge. As sessile and filtering organisms, they are extremely vulnerable to bottom trawling, which exerts a strong pressure on the circalittoral soft bottoms and could be used as bioindicators of this impact. During the MEDITS surveys of 2010 and 2017, the ascidiofauna of the Iberian Mediterranean Sea was studied from Alborán Sea to Catalonia at depths ranging from 37.5 to 693 m. A total of 3810 specimens belonging to 10 families and 38 species were assessed. Taxocenosis demonstrated that Southeast (SE) and Northeast (NE) Iberian Peninsula host a high diversity, specific richness, and abundance of both colonial and solitary species; however, in the Gulf of Valencia, the rates were lower than those previously recorded, and the colonial strategies were scarce. This may have occurred as a result of the continental shelf being steeper in the Alborán Sea and the SE and NE zones coasts than in the shallow shelf of Gulf of Valencia, which is more prone to bottom trawling. Moreover, differences were found in terms of depth, with the highest values of the previous rates being lower than 50 m, where Spanish legislation prohibits bottom trawling at depths lower than that mentioned. For the results obtained, both the taxocenosis of the ascidians and their strategies could be good indicators of the condition of the circalittoral soft bottoms of the Mediterranean Sea impacted by bottom trawling.

- Abstract
The seismicity of the southwestern Iberian Peninsula is moderate but large events with long return periods occur (≈ 200 years). This exceeds the life of various generations, making the population unacquainted with the seismic hazard. On the one hand, this results in a low demanding seismic code which increases the seismic vulnerability and, therefore, the seismic risk. On the other hand, the local emergency services must be properly prepared to face a destructive seismic event, with emergency plans and mitigation strategies. This assumption enhances the need of assessing the seismic risk of Seville in a civil protection context. For all the aforementioned and for the lack of instrumental data of relevant earthquakes, the assessment of the seismic hazard in this area is challenging. To do this, seismogenic zones of the new seismic hazard map of Spain have been used as sources. The peak ground acceleration (PGA) for each scenario has been calculated by means of ground motion prediction equations (GMPE). To estimate the site efects, in a 1D model environment, a shear wave velocity (Vs) map of the top 5 m has been depicted based on the standard penetration test (SPT). Seville’s building stock has been classifed in agreement with the previous works in Lorca and Barcelona to determine its vulnerability. The main goal of this work was to investigate the infuence of the soil amplifcation on the seismic behaviour of diferent building typologies. Therefore, the fnal target was to plot the damage scenarios expected in Seville under a maximum credible earthquake by means of a deterministic seismic hazard assessment (DSHA). As outputs, the scenario modelled showed that around 27 000 buildings would experience a moderate damage and that 26 000 would sufer pre-collapse or even collapse. Atmospheric emissions from vessels at 38 Pacific and Gulf-Caribbean Mexican ports were determined for nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, particulates, carbon monoxide, non-methane volatile organic compounds, and carbon dioxide. The emissions have been estimated using a bottom-up methodology in the maneuver and hoteling phases, by vessel type, from 2005 to 2020. Maritime traffic in Mexico’s Pacific zone contributes approximately with 60% of the country’s total ship emissions, with the remaining 40% in Gulf-Caribbean ports. The highest atmospheric emissions were found at the Manzanillo and Lázaro Cárdenas ports on the Pacific coast, as well as the Altamira and Veracruz ports on the Gulf-Caribbean coast. The contribution of the atmospheric emissions by vessel type at Pacific ports was Container 67%, Bulk Carrier 32%, Tanker 0.8%, and RoRo 0.4%. For Gulf-Caribbean ports it was Container 76%, Bulk Carrier 19%, Tanker 3%, and RoRo 2%. This study incorporates the International Maritime Organization implementations on reductions of sulfur content in marine fuel, from 4.5% mass by mass from 2005 to 2011, to 3.5% from 2012 to 2019, to 0.5% beginning in 2020. - Abstract
Most seismic vulnerability analyses do not consider the Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI). However, it has been proved that SSI does not equally affect all types of structures and all types of soils. The analysis of the state of the art reveals that SSI especially affects the performance of mid/high-rise buildings under soft/inelastic soil conditions. This leads to overestimating the capacity of buildings and to obtaining unreliable results. This paper aims to assess the soil influence in the seismic vulnerability analysis of a reinforced concrete (RC) building. Three models of a real case study building have been determined (low-rise (real), mid-rise and high-rise). A pre-code 1970s case study building, located in Huelva, has been selected. This building shares typical constructive and structural characteristics with most RC buildings constructed during that period. The 3D continuum model of the soil has been carried out to simulate its nonlinear behaviour. The most probable soil profile has been defined, observing a clayey soil. Therefore, the analyses have been performed under undrained conditions. Nonlinear static analyses have been carried out to determine the seismic capacity of the models through the finite element method (FEM). The damage has been assessed by means of the local procedure, defined in the European seismic code, and the global fragility procedure. The results have shown that the soil does not significantly influence the behaviour of low-rise buildings. However, in the case of mid- and high-rise buildings, the maximum capacity can be reduced by up to 10% and 30%, respectively.

Transnational education is one of the many facets of inclusive education, with its relevance of English as the natural Lingua Franca in a vast range of contexts. The University of Catania, Italy, is an interesting case-study of a highly international University, which welcomes students from all over the world, and where transnational education has become an ordinary practice. In the light of my experience of English language teaching, I would like to report both on the cognitive value of an intercultural, learner-centered approach and on the various factors that concur to make mixed classes a motivating practice. Based on the hypothesis that people who speak different languages have different worldviews, my teaching proposal aims at fulfilling two objectives: understanding the perspectives of other cultures, and comparing the language and culture of others with students’ own.

The large-scale distribution pattern of megafauna communities along the Mediterranean middle slope was explored. The study was conducted between 500 and 800 m depth where deep-water fishery occurs. Although community studies carried out deeper than 500 m are partly available for some geographic areas, few large-scale comparative studies have been carried out. Within the framework of the MEDITS survey programme, we compared the megafauna community structure in ten geographical sub-areas (GSAs) along the Mediterranean coasts. Additionally, the spatial distribution of fishing was analysed using vessel monitoring by satellite information. Overall, the community showed a significant difference between sub-areas, with a decreasing eastward pattern in abundance and biomass. Longitude was the main factor explaining variation among sub-areas (by generalized additive models). However, we found a region which did not follow the general pattern. GSA 6 (northern Spain) showed significantly lower abundance and a different composition structure to the adjacent areas. The decrease in community descriptors (i.e. abundance and biomass) in this area is probably a symptom of population changes induced by intense fishery exploitation. Overall, a combination of environmental variables and human-induced impacts appears to influence the bentho-pelagic communities along the slope areas of the Mediterranean., En este estudio se describe la estructura y patrones de distribución de la comunidad de megafauna que habita en el margen continental medio a lo largo del Mediterráneo. El estudio se realizó entre los 500 y 800 m, coincidiendo espacialmente con las pesquerías de profundidad. A pesar de que se conoce parcialmente la estructura de las comunidades que habitan por debajo de 500 m, existe la necesidad de estudiar estas comunidades a una escala espacial más amplia. Dentro del marco del proyecto internacional MEDITS, se comparó la estructura de las comunidades en diez sub-áreas geográficas (GSAs) a lo largo de las costas mediterráneas. Además se analizó la distribución espacial del esfuerzo pesquero utilizando la información de los datos de seguimiento de buques. En general los resultados mostraron diferencias significativas entre subáreas mostrando un patrón decreciente en los valores de biomasa hacia el este, siendo la longitud el principal factor explicativo del modelo de distribución (GAMs). Sin embargo, encontramos una subárea que no seguía el patrón general, la GSA6 (norte de España). La GSA6 mostró una biomasa y estructura de la comunidad diferente a las áreas adyacentes. La disminución de la biomasa en esta área parece ser un síntoma de los cambios poblaciones causados por la elevada intensidad de pesca en la zona. Los resultados sugieren que la distribución y estructura de las comunidades bento-pelágicas parecen estar moduladas por la combinación de las variables ambientales y los impactos producidos por la actividad humana.

Trawling pressure and environmental changes may affect the composition of fish assemblages. Our knowledge on large spatio-temporal patterns of demersal fish composition remains incomplete for the Mediterranean Sea. We investigated (1) the spatio-temporal stability of demersal assemblages, (2) the relationships between these assemblages and potential structuring factors (trawling pressure and environmental conditions) in order to assess the dynamic of the assemblage structure at the scale of the northern Mediterranean Sea. We analysed a dataset of 18062 hauls from 10 to 800 m depth performed annually during the last two decades across 17 Geographical Sub-Areas (GSAs) (MEDITS program). A multi-table analysis (STATICO-CoA) evidenced a strong inter-GSAs stability in the organization of assemblages, with specificities for some GSAs. The most stable structuring factors were linked to combined gradients of chlorophyll a, phytoplancton carbon biomass and temperature, inversely correlated with depth, salinity and nutrient gradients (axis 1 of the STATICO-CoA compromise, 93.74% of the total variability). A common pattern linking the distribution of species to these environmental gradients was evidenced for most of the 17 GSAs. Estimate of trawling pressure showed a minor role in the organization of the assemblages for the spatial scale and years investigated (axis 2, 4.67%)., La presión pesquera y los cambios ambientales pueden afectar a la composición de las agrupaciones de peces. En el Mediterráneo, nuestro conocimiento a gran escala sobre los patrones espacio-temporales de la composición de especies de peces demersales sigue siendo incompleto. Investigamos (1) la estabilidad espacio-temporal de las agrupaciones demersales (2) las relaciones entre dichas agrupaciones y los posibles factores estructurantes (presión pesquera de arrastre y condiciones ambientales) para evaluar la dinámica de la estructura de las agrupaciones en el norte del mar Mediterráneo. Analizamos un conjunto de 18062 lances entre 10 y 800 m. de profundidad realizados anualmente, durante las últimas dos décadas, en 17 sub-áreas geográficas (GSAs) (Proyecto MEDITS). El análisis multi-tablas (STATICO-CoA) evidenció una fuerte estabilidad inter-GSAs en la organización de agrupaciones, con especificidades para algunas GSAs. Los factores estructurantes más estables se relacionaron con los gradientes combinados de clorofila a, fitoplancton, carbono y temperatura, correlacionados inversamente con los gradientes de profundidad, salinidad y nutrientes (eje 1 del STATICO-CoA, 93.74% de la variabilidad total). The uncertainty in age estimation by otolith reading may be at the root of the large variability in red mullet (Mullus barbatus) growth models in the Mediterranean. In the MEDITS survey, red mullet age data are produced following the same sampling protocol and otolith reading methodology. However, ageing is assigned using different interpretation schemes, including variations in theoretical birthdate and number of false rings considered, in addition to differences in the experience level of readers. The present work analysed the influence of these variations and the geographical location of sampling on red mullet ageing using a multivariate approach (principal component analysis). Reader experience was the most important parameter correlated with the variability. The number of rings considered false showed a significant effect on the variability in the first age groups but had less influence on the older ones. The effect of the theoretical birthdate was low in all age groups. Geographical location had a significant influence, with longitude showing greater effects than latitude. In light of these results, workshops, exchanges and the adoption of a common ageing protocol based on age validation studies are considered fundamental tools for improving precision in red mullet ageing., La incertidumbre en la estimación de la edad mediante la lectura de otolitos puede ser la principal causa detrás de la gran variabilidad existente en los modelos de crecimiento del salmonete (Mullus barbatus) en el Mediterráneo. En la campaña MEDITS, los datos de edad del salmonete se generan siguiendo el mismo protocolo de muestreo y metodología de lectura de otolitos, aunque la asignación de la edad se lleva a cabo usando distintos esquemas para la interpretación de las lecturas, incluyendo variaciones en la fecha teórica de nacimiento y en el número de anillos considerados falsos, además de las diferencias existentes en cuanto al nivel de experiencia de los lectores. En este trabajo, la influencia de las variaciones en los esquemas de interpretación, el nivel de experiencia de los lectores, y la localización geográfica de las muestras, sobre la determinación de la edad en el salmonete se analiza mediante una aproximación multivariante (Análisis de Componentes Principales). La experiencia de los lectores fue el parámetro más correlacionado con la variabilidad. El número de anillos considerados falsos mostró un efecto significativo sobre la variabilidad de los primeros grupos de edad, mientras que su influencia sobre los más viejos fue menor. El efecto de la fecha teórica de nacimiento tuvo poca importancia en todos los grupos de edad. La localización geográfica tuvo una influencia significativa, con la longitud mostrando mayores efectos que la latitud. Teniendo en cuenta estos resultados, los grupos de trabajo e intercambios de otolitos así como la adopción de un protocolo de asignación de edad común basado en estudios de validación de edad, se consideran herramientas fundamentales para mejorar la precisión en la determinación de la edad del salmonete.

VII International Symposium on Marine Sciences (ISMS 2020), 1-3 July 2020 (Barcelona).-- 1 page, A fragment of 572 bp of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) mitochondrial gene was analyzed to estimate the molecular variability in the bathyal crab Geryon longipes. From four Mediterranean locations (Barcelona, València, Alacant and Ibiza channel), twenty individuals were sequenced. Additionally, thirteen sequences from other geographic origins (Israel, Malta, Portugal and Scotland) were obtained from DNA databases for their use in this study. Only three polymorphic sites were observed, and interestingly one of them showed heteroplasmy. Haplotype (Hd) and nucleotide (π) diversities were estimated as 0.487±0.091 and 0.00124±0.00029, respectively. Only four haplotypes were obtained: one main haplotype, a secondary one and twohaplotypes found in few individuals only.A haplotype network was constructed showing that both main haplotypes were connected by only one substitution, whereas to reach any of the two remaining haplotypes, an intermediate one was needed. However, this intermediate haplotype was not detected in this research. Con el propósito de evaluar el efecto de los usos de suelo; sistema de coberturas de suelo (SCS), agroforestal (SAF), tradicional (Tr) y bosque secundario (Bs) sobre la erosión hídrica y la restauración de las propiedades hidrofísicas; infiltración del agua en el suelo, contenidos de arcilla, materia orgánica, y porcentaje de humedad a capacidad de campo. Fue establecido un ensayo experimental de parcelas divididas en tres fincas localizadas la unidad hidrográfica Quebrada Arriba, Yalagüina-Madriz, Nicaragua. Los sistemas que presentan mayor cobertura superficial presentaron, menor tasa de erosión de 41.75 ton ha-1 en los SAF versus 123.08 ton ha-1 en los sistemas tradicionales. Y mayores contenidos de materia orgánica de 10% en el sistema ASA a 2.98 % en el tradicional. A nivel espacial los tratamientos que se ubicaron en la parte baja del relieve, presentaron mayores porcentajes de humedad retenida y materia orgánica (MOS) en comparación a los tratamientos ubicados en la parte alta. Finalmente, los altos contenidos de arcilla contribuyen al incremento de la capacidad de retener agua en el suelo de la microcuenca. Por tanto, es necesario promover tecnologías que brinden al suelo mayor cobertura para mejorar su calidad y reducir la tasa erosión hídrica.

VII International Symposium on Marine Sciences (ISMS 2020), 1-3 July 2020 (Barcelona).-- 2 pages, The Mediterranean Sea is a marine ecosystem with high heterogeneity in its physical, chemical, biological and ecological characteristics, with clear north-south and east-west gradients. It is also an important area in terms of biodiversity and conservation of vulnerable species, as it suffers several human impacts, like fishing and climate change. Previous studies have characterized spatial and temporal patterns of species distribution and biodiversity indicators. However, a community-based analysis combining specific indicators sensitive to fishing impact and climate variability that help to identify which areas and taxa are most sensitive to specific drivers is still missing. In this study, we examined spatio-temporal changes of marine communities along a latitudinal gradient off Spain’s mainland in the Western Mediterranean Sea using data from the MEDITS surveys from 1994 to 2017. Several ecological indicators measuring α (richness, Shannon index and Pielou's evenness index) and β diversity (assessing both turnover and nestedness) were selected, as well as indicators linked with changes in communities due to fishing impact or climate change, like community biomass and functional groups, relative predator weight and trophic level metrics. We used correlation analyses between these indicators and other variables (among them year, location and subarea) and spatial-temporal statistical models to assess variations in the indicators and spatial-temporal gradients. Our results clearly show a heterogeneous response between taxa and area, with a remarkable increase in several indicators when focusing on cephalopods. Our study shows a contrasting response between taxonomic groups suggesting a change in the ecosystem functioning over time in the Western Mediterranean Sea. En este proyecto se aborda la restauración y rehabilitación de una cantera de áridos. Dicha restauración se realiza mediante la instauración de un vertedero de residuos inertes. Estos residuos son caracterizados también a lo largo del documento. En el presente texto se exponen los diferentes requisitos para llevar a cabo dicho proyecto en función de la legislación aplicable y se explica con todo detalle la manera de proceder en el relleno del hueco minero. Mediante la creación del vertedero, no solo se consigue la restauración de la cantera, sino que además se consigue mejorar la gestión de residuos inertes de la zona y contribuir a la preservación del medio ambiente. Además, una vez que el hueco está cubierto, se desarrolla la plantación de un olivar para la rehabilitación del terreno en todos sus aspectos. Por último se lleva a cabo un estudio sobre la viabilidad económica y el presupuesto necesario para acometer dicho proyecto., This project deals with the restoration of an aggregate quarry. This restoration is carried out by establishing an inert waste dump. These wastes are also characterized through the document. This text sets out the different requirements for carrying out the project in accordance with the applicable legislation and explains in detail how to proceed in filling the mining hole. By creating the landfill, not only is the restoration of the quarry achieved,but it is also possible to improve the management of inert waste in the area and contribute to the preservation of the enviroment. Furthermore, once the hole is covered, an olive grove is planted to rehabilitate the land in all its aspects. Finally, a study on the economic viability and the budget necessary to undertake the project is carried outt.

We quantified the incidence of microplastics in the gut contents of the European sardine (Sardina pilchardus) and anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea and tested which variables influence this abundance, including the prevalence of parasites (i.e., trematoda larvae and nematodes). We detected a 58% occurrence of microplastics ingestion in sardines and a 60% in anchovies. With respect to sardines, the individuals with lower body conditions were found to have the highest microplastics ingestion probabilities, whereas in anchovies such probabilities were observed in individuals with higher gonadosomatic indices and smaller size. The areas with the highest microplastics ingestion probabilities were the Gulf of Alicante for sardines and the Gulf of Lion - Ebro Delta for anchovies. Both species showed a positive relationship between parasites and microplastics ingestion. These results highlight that both parasitism and ingestion of microplastics are concerns for the health of marine stocks and human consumers.

Foi concebido para apoiar a formação de professores, monitores e técnicos da área educativa do 1º Ciclo do Ensino Básico (CEB), que queiram melhorar os seus conhecimentos e desenvolver atividades sobre o risco sísmico e de tsunami. Os conteúdos e informação contidos neste documento surgem de novas pesquisas agora realizadas, mas também na continuação de outros projectos em que a autora participou, de-signadamente o jogo sério "Treme-Treme".

- Abstract
The Iberian Peninsula is close to the Eurasia-Africa plate boundary resulting in a considerable seismic hazard. In fact, the southwestern Iberian Peninsula is affected by far away earthquakes of long-return period with large-very large magnitude. A project named PERSISTAH (Projetos de Escolas Resilientes aos SISmos no Território do Algarve e de Huelva, in Portuguese) aims to cooperatively assess the seismic vulnerability of primary schools located in the Algarve (Portugal) and Huelva (Spain). Primary schools have been selected due to the considerable amount of similar buildings and their seismic vulnerability. In Portugal, the Decreto Lei 235/83 (RSAEEP) is mandatory while in Spain, the mandatory code is the Seismic Building Code (NCSE-02). In both countries, the Eurocode-8 (EC-8) is recommended. Despite the fact that both regions would be equally affected by an earthquake, both seismic codes are significantly different. This research compares the seismic action of Ayamonte (Huelva) and Vila Real de Santo António (Portugal). Both towns are very close and located at both sides of the border. Moreover, they share the same geology. This analysis has been applied considering a reinforced concrete (RC) primary school building located in Huelva. To do so, the performance-based method has been used. The seismic action and the damage levels are compared and analysed. The results have shown considerable differences in the seismic actions designation, in the performance point values and in the damage levels. The values considered in the Portuguese code are significantly more unfavourable. An agreement between codes should be made for border regions.
