In order to achieve the desired performances and the increased value added to the final consumer, organizations need not only to integrate their core businesses and align them to business strategy but also to develop essential entrepreneurial competences. After presenting the dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation and their specificity in a supply chain, we propose an empirical research using a working dataset of 64 firms from various industries to analyze the Romanian entrepreneurial supply chains. Structural equations are employed to estimate the complex relationships between organizational performances and entrepreneurial orientation in supply chains at national level. Results show that entrepreneurial orientation influences organizational competences only in the framework of the supply chain management strategic approach to operational excellence. This study examines the entrepreneurial orientation (EO) of agri-food cooperatives that engage in export activities. Using the PLS (partial least square) technique to test the hypotheses made it possible to conduct an analysis based on the principal components and on variance. The model was run in two steps. The first step confirmed that entrepreneurial orientation (measured by innovativeness, proactiveness and risk taking) was positively related to the export activities of the agri-food cooperatives (entrepreneurial orientation explained 23% of export activity). The second step, applying contingent theory, found that in larger sized cooperatives that operated in more dynamic environments the effect of entrepreneurial orientation on export activity was greater, explaining 29.7% of the variance. Effectuation provides an explanation of the behaviour of entrepreneurial firms in transforming environments. This article empirically investigates the influence of effectuation on entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and firm performance, while considering environmental uncertainty as a moderating influence. A survey is administered to a sample of high-technology firms and hypotheses are tested using correlational and regression analysis. A positive relationship between effectuation and the firm's level of EO is established, where this effectuation moderates the relationship between EO and firm performance. However, the interaction effect between effectuation and environmental dynamism and hostility proves to be non-significant. By applying an empirical lens this study increases the relevance and generalisability of effectuation theory by expanding it from mostly a descriptive nature to a theory that accounts for moderators in the EO–performance relationship. This article is about innovativeness in the context of entrepreneurial orientation. The aim is to present the results of an exploratory and qualitative research that sought to characterize innovativeness in food industries. A conceptual review on entrepreneurial orientation and innovativeness is presented as a base for the study. Data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews with professionals of nine medium and large food industries from the central region of Rio Grande do Sul state. The analysis concludes with an over-view about innovative behavior, which is evidenced differently in industries surveyed. Innovation in products and services is featured in four industries, while process innovation is a priority in eight of the nine industries. There is constant investment in innovation, for a department of P&D in four industries and active participation of the supplier in innovations of the both industries. There are people dedicated to innovative activities in five industries and people involved in the other part. Creativity is especially important, although lacks systematic procedures for its development. Mobile Information Technologies (MIT) use has contributed to organizations innovate their practices. These technologies have, in a way, being a mediator for organizational entrepreneurship. The entrepreneurial orientation portrays the entrepreneurship at the organizational level, and allows encountering new business opportunities. It is characterizes by innovativeness, risk taking, proactivity, autonomy and competitive aggressiveness dimensions, and may influences from many environmental factors, including technological ones. In this context, the objective in this study is verify how the MIT use presents effects on Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) dimensions within an organization. The research was developed through case study of exploratory nature in a company from the capitalization segment. For data analysis, the technique of content analysis and the general strategy of case description was adopted. The results show that effects of smartphone use in innovativeness, proactivity, autonomy and aggressiveness of OE dimensions are positive, whereas in risk-taking dimension, the smartphone use has helped in prevention. It is possible argue that MIT uses contribute partially to the company's OE studied, as well as its use is a facilitator for people's commitment with innovation activities. The authors examine how entrepreneurial firms gain competitive advantage and hence entrepreneurial success by optimizing their dynamic capabilities. Using a single case design, incorporating in-depth interviews with key informants within an insurance company in Ghana, the authors attempt to highlight the limitations of an existing model. Their key proposition is that the growth and profitability exhibited in the case study are largely attributable to its ability to leverage its entrepreneurial orientation. They argue, therefore, that despite the ability of the resource-based view to translate into competitive advantage at the firm level, it falls short of longer-term competitive advantages and entrepreneurial success—especially in the financial services sector with homogeneous product offerings. The impact online social networks are having nowadays as a marketing tool in the performance of companies is yet to be made clear. Such an impact is being looked into in this paper on the basis of Spanish companies' data. Structural equations being applied to a multi-group are the channel through which an attempt is being made to ind out whether an intensive use of these networks in the marketing ield shall somehow restrain the relationship between dynamic capabilities, market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation, and what is the impact these networks are having on the latter. Survey outcomes show that this intensity somehow makes the relationship between market orientation and performance and entrepreneurial orientation smoother. This study investigates the effect of the entrepreneurial orientation (EO) on SME financial performance. The essay also proposes a contingency model to explore the moderating effects of environmental hostility on the relationship between EO and profitability. The study was conducted using a sample of 121 manufacturing SMEs in Spain. Results confirm the positive influence of EO on a firm's profitability. The academic literature presents current progress in understanding the development of business strategies, how to improve the skills and resources to meet competition and turbulence of the competitive environment. This paper examined the relationships of the constructs entrepreneurial orientation (Naman; Slevin, 1993) and marketing capability (VORHIES; HARKER, 2000) on business performance (GONZÁLES-BENITO et al., 2009) perceived by managers, focusing on small business retailers. We evaluated the empirical models proposed in the literature for entrepreneurial orientation, marketing capabilities, business performance and the role of their relationships under the moderating effects of the type of firm, location, and age since its foundation. Data were collected in a non-probabilistic cross-sectional sample of 262 retail and service business in the Mato Grosso do Sul State. The hypotheses tested by means of statistical approaches and exploratory factor analysis and by structural equations modeling, using the maximum likelihood estimation and fit indices of the conceptual model. Review of data provides empirical evidence for the confirmation of the theoretical models adopted, favoring the inference that small retailers achieve higher business performance, when greater is the intensity of entrepreneurial orientation and the marketing capability. Empirical evidence supports that there are no significant differences in the practices of entrepreneurial orientation and marketing capability among firms like micro or small business. However, practices were observed between these two different constructs for businesses as their location, age and business sector, like retail or service. With regard to managerial implications, due to the results of this paper, leads to the suggestion that businessman retailer adopt a posture more entrepreneurial, knowledge of the strategic actions of competitors and in understanding the wants and needs of consumers, such as in the intensification of marketing tools for obtaining greater business performance. An explanatory survey was carried out in 2008 to investigate the relationship between Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO), environmental factors, human capital and organizational characteristics vs. entrepreneurial performance among entrepreneurial firms in Iranian agricultural sector. Data were obtained from a sample of 120 Iranian agricultural establishments, using an interview-oriented questionnaire. The hierarchical regression analysis revealed that: although there is a positive direct relationship between EO and entrepreneurial performance in an agricultural business setting, applying main-effect or contingency models only, provides a distracting picture of entrepreneurial performance in agricultural settings. It was also found that configurational approach may better explain the relationship between EO, environmental factors, human capital and organizational characteristics vs. entrepreneurial performance over and above contingency and above main- effect models. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to discuss the measurement of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) in the student population of different academic programmes, in order to enhance entrepreneurship-related procedures within universities. Design/methodology/approach – A survey-based tool for measuring EO is presented and used in one university. The answers are explored using statistical methods. Findings – The results show that the survey provides the user with adequate data about EO within student groups. They also demonstrate that while entrepreneurial desire differs between academic programmes, actual EO results do not. Practical implications – In the paper it is suggested that the new information can be used for developing entrepreneurial courses as well as student selection procedures. Some modifications for the survey, as well as initiation of a wider research programme, are also proposed. Originality/value – The paper uses a traditional survey for EO in a novel setting, amongst university students. The study investigates the effects of informal institutions and entrepreneurial orientation on the performance of microenterprises at the subnational level within a developing country context. Using structural equation modeling based on a large-scale survey of 735 microenterprises in the Philippines, it is found that informal institutional factors and entrepreneurial orientation are associated with firm performance. However, further analysis reveals a strong mediating role of entrepreneurial orientation on the informal institutions-firm performance relationships. This finding is novel and adds to our understanding of the mechanism through which informal institutions affect firm performance, particularly for microenterprises in developing countries. This research takes a relational approach on the entrepreneurial behavior of a firm and analyzes the influence of knowledge acquisition through inter-firm relationships on the entrepreneurial orientation. It introduces a new variable, second order social capital, to explain how knowledge acquisition leads to higher levels of entrepreneurial orientation. The results of the empirical study on a sample of small and medium enterprises from the Information and Communications Technology sector in Spain confirm the hypothesized indirect influence of knowledge acquisition on the entrepreneurial orientation and the mediating effect of second order social capital. As European airport managers address the transition from public ownership to modern businesses, this paper sets out to utilise several organisational variables as measures of their progress. The impact of commercialisation, liberalisation and low-cost carriers has resulted in airport managers dealing with new and complex challenges. Variables were selected on the basis of increased usage in the private sector and linked to ownership structure for 98 European airports. Entrepreneurial orientation, organic organisation structure and rational strategic decision-making are assessed for their relationship with type of ownership. The results show that entrepreneurial orientation and organic organisational structures are positively related to higher levels of private ownership but that rational strategic decision-making is not. This study explores differences in entrepreneurial orientation (EO) by profit status. In addition to EO, other survey questions sought to determine how firms scanned the external market for information and the firm’s view of external market volatility. The sample, collected in 2004, consisted of 134 nursing home administrators located in the state of Florida. The data were analyzed using generalized linear model. The results show that there was no significant difference in the EO between nonprofits and for-profits but that nonprofits were significantly more likely to engage in environmental scanning activities such as gathering information from trade magazines and suppliers and that they remained abreast of economic and technological trends more than their for-profit counterparts. We explore the relationship between firm performance and its strategic orientation in adopting an open-approach to innovation. Based on the description of previous author, we develop a multi-item construct to measure firm-level open innovation proclivity. Open innovation proclivity assesses the company's inclination to utilise external ideas to complement its business model to profit from innovations. This construct also measures the firm's tendency to sell its intellectual property to outsiders to profit from others' innovation efforts. Collecting survey data from multiple respondents with time lag from 122 Taiwanese electronic-product manufacturers, we find Taiwanese electronic companies' proclivity to open innovation relates positively to managers' perceived firm performance. This project has multiple purposes: (1) to develop a representative sample of private sector firms in Turkey through truly probabilistic sampling processes, (2) based on this sample, to explore the general profiles of firms in Turkey in terms of three organizational culture elements identified in the literature as key drivers of superior firm performance; namely, Market Orientation, Learning Orientation, and Entrepreneurial Orientation, (3) to examine the effects of these cultural factors, on their Innovative Capacity, and (4) to further examine the joint effects of cultural orientations and Innovative Capacity on aspects of long-term firm performance. To these ends, a sample of 441 firms has been developed and data have been collected from the managers and employees of these firms (2720 questionnaires). The data have been analyzed in order to test the hypothesized relationships across the study constructs, and several insights have been derived. Foremost, the results indicate that the three cultural orientations are very strong determinants of Innovative Capacity and a number of performance indicators, including long-term profitability. This article describes research concerning with identifying and explaining similarities and differences in characteristics of entrepreneurs in incubators in Brazil and Portugal. The analytical fundamentals for the comparisons were Hofstede's cultural dimension model and entrepreneurial orientation (Lumpkim & Dess, 1996). The use of these two models relied on the application of a questionnaire to entrepreneurs in these two countries, and the research was therefore based on intensive field work, which was crucial to achieving the desired goals. Results from the research revealed that there were differences in cultural dimensions - power distance and uncertainty avoidance, both higher in Brazil. The entrepreneurial orientation was also higher in Brazil, especially risk-taking and competitive aggressiveness. The Brazilian entrepreneurs were more likely to reject future uncertainties and showed a greater propensity to take risks and expose themselves to uncertainty, as long as they were paid for this exposure. By combining major tenets developed in the entrepreneurial orientation literature and institutional theory, we investigate the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and green management in the context of emerging markets and the moderating effects of social legitimacy and ownership type. Using survey data from 239 firms in China, we find that entrepreneurial orientation is positively associated with emerging market firms' green management. This positive relationship is strengthened by social legitimacy and is stronger for state-owned enterprises than for non-state-owned enterprises. Furthermore, our empirical results partly support the idea that the configuration of high entrepreneurial orientation, high social legitimacy and state ownership is more effective in facilitating emerging market firms' green management than other configurations. This study explores a new perspective (i.e., the integration of an entrepreneurial approach and institutional theory) to explain why firms make differentiated green decisions in emerging markets. Additionally, the three-way configuration effects provide a more complete picture and thereby facilitate a deeper understanding of emerging market firms' entrepreneurial spirit with regard to environmental issues. This paper describes a study aiming at comparing entrepreneurs-owners of firms in incubators in Brazil and in Portugal. The comparasion between the two countries was due to a common past mirrored, especially the Portuguese influence in brazilian's cultural, reflected in Hofstedès cross cultural study (1980). The entrepreneurial orientation was higher in Brazil, especially in the dimensions risk-taking and competitive aggressiveness. The Brazilian entrepreneurs revealed a higher rejection of future uncertainties, higher propensity to take risks and to expose themselves to uncertainty. This study rise important questions about the drives of entrepreneurship, and a curiosity about this. Family businesses often face significant challenges while trying to develop and increase their sustainability throughout generations. This is often due to their inability to properly manage the knowledge required to develop their resources to increase sustainability. Therefore, this study examines the relationship between processes of managing knowledge, dynamic capabilities, and innovative performance in an Indonesian family company in order to improve business performance. This is qualitative research with a single case study used to obtain data from nineparticipants in an Indonesian family company ("Ardiles") that focuses on footwear. The findings showed that a family company that mobilizes knowledge can improve its members' dynamic capabilities for proper business management and growth. Furthermore, the frequent process of mobilizing knowledge improves family members' dynamic capabilities to create new ideas. The purpose of this research is to study the factors related to the performance of the entrepreneurs who passed through the stages of business development at the university business incubators in Thailand. These factors consist of various characteristics, namely, leadership orientation, entrepreneurial orientation, network capacity, and innovative capacity. The sample group consisted of 220 businesses that had passed through a university business incubator in Thailand. The SPSS Statistics program calculated the basic statistics, as well as the relationship test for each factor studied, and examined the statistics using a structural equation model (SEM). The results revealed that the characteristics of leadership orientation, entrepreneurial orientation, network capacity, innovative capacity, and entrepreneurial performance had relationships in the same direction. Furthermore, an analysis of the relationships between the factors found that entrepreneurial orientation had positive relationships with network capacity and innovative capacity, leadership orientation had positive relationships with innovative capacity and entrepreneurial performance, and innovative capacity had a positive relationship with entrepreneurial performance. These relationships summarize a developmental model for the innovative capacity and performance of businesses that have passed through the university business incubators in Thailand. This study aims to examine the relationship between top managers' entrepreneurial orientation and firms' research and development (R&D) investment and the moderating effects of environmental uncertainty on this relationship. Using a sample of 337 Korean technology firms, we implemented a multiple regression analysis with R&D intensity as a dependent variable, top managers' entrepreneurial orientation as an independent variable, and environmental uncertainty as a moderating variable. The findings reveal that the entrepreneurial orientation of top managers has significant and positive relationships with firms' strategic decisions regarding R&D investment. This implies that the tendencies and characteristics of top managers significantly influence firms' innovation efforts, especially during an economic recession. Furthermore, environmental munificence intensifies the entrepreneurial orientation and R&D investment relationship, while environmental dynamism has a negative moderating effect. On the other hand, environmental hostility does not have any impact on this relationship. The moderating effects of environmental uncertainty imply that firms should carefully consider environmental dynamism and munificence to intensify the positive effect of top managers' entrepreneurial orientation on firms' innovation efforts. Limited research focuses on the entrepreneurial mindset of information and communication technology (ICT) firms, despite the opportunities in and importance of this sector for economic growth. In this article, the entrepreneurial mindset of ICT firms is described by using three indicators: entrepreneurial orientation, e-business initiatives and a supportive organizational climate. Data were obtained using structured telephone interviews with 144 ICT firms. The findings indicate that the three indicators of an entrepreneurial mindset are associated and can be linked to performance. It is recommended that managers create a supportive climate for entrepreneurship by offering rewards, empowering employees and providing leadership and support for initiatives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
