Near-field microscopy is a versatile technique for non-destructive detection of optical properties on the nanometer scale. Contrary to conventional microscopy techniques, the resolution in near-field microscopy is not restricted by the diffraction limit, but by the size of the probe only. Typically, wavelength-independent resolution in the range of few ten nanometers can be achieved. Many fundamental phenomena in solid states occur at such small length scales and can be probed by infrared and THz radiation. In the present work, nanoscale charge carrier distributions were investigated with near-field microscopy in classic semiconductors and state-of-the-art graphene field-effect transistors. A CO2 laser, the free-electron laser FELBE at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden Rossendorf and a photoconductive antenna were applied as radiation sources for illumination of the samples. In the theoretical part of the work, the band model for charge carriers in semiconductors is briefly explained to derive typical charge carrier densities of such materials. The influence of the charge carriers to the light-matter interaction is introduced via the Drude model and evaluated for both infrared and THz radiation. In field-effect transistors, charge carrier density waves can occur when strong AC fields are coupled into the device. The phenomena in such transistors are introduced as a more complex material system. To describe the near-field coupling of the samples to the nanoscopic probe, the dipole model is introduced and extended for periodic charge carrier density, as elicited by low repetition-rate excitation lasers. Consequently, sidebands occur as new frequencies in the signal spectrum, allowing for a more sensitive probing of such transient processes. Experimental investigations of these sidebands were performed with a CO2 laser setup on a bulk germanium sample which was excited with femtosecond laser pulses. New frequencies up to the 8th sideband could be observed. Im Gegensatz zur konventionellen Mikroskopie ist die Auflösung nicht durch Beugungseffekte, sondern durch die Größe der genutzten Sonde begrenzt. Überlicherweise werden wellenlängenunabhängig Auflösungen von einigen zehn Nanometern erreicht. Viele fundamentale Prozesse in der Festkörperphysik treten auf Längenskalen dieser Größenordnung auf und können mit Infrarot- und THz-Strahlung untersucht werden. In dieser Arbeit wurden nanoskalige Ladungsträgerverteilungen mit Rasternahfeldmikroskopie untersucht, einerseits in klassischen Halbleitern, anderseits in state-of-the-art Graphen Feldeffekttransistoren. Zur Beleuchtung der Proben wurden ein CO2 Laser, der freie-Elektronen Laser FELBE am Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf und eine photoleitende Antenne verwendet. Im theoretischen Teil der Arbeit wird das Bändermodell für Ladungsträger in Halbleitern erklärt, um daraus typische Ladungsträgerdichten in diesen Materialien abzuleiten. Der Einfluss der Ladungsträger auf die Interaktion mit Strahlung wird durch das Drude-Modell eingeführt und für Infrarot- und THz-Strahlung abgeschätzt. In Graphen Feldeffekttransistoren können Ladungsträgerdichtewellen auftreten, wenn starke Wechselfelder in das Bauelement eingekoppelt werden. Die Prozesse in solchen Transistoren werden als komplexeres Materialsystem eingeführt. Um die Nahfeldkopplung der Proben an die Sonde zu beschreiben, wird das Dipol-Modell eingeführt und für periodische Ladungsträgerdichten erweitert, wie sie bspw. durch Pumplaser mit niedrigen Repetitionsraten erzeugt werden können. In der Folge entstehen Seitenbänder als neue Frequenzen im Signalspektrum, welche eine sensitivere Messung solcher transienten Prozesse ermöglichen. The scope of this PhD-thesis is the production and characterization of highly conductive ferroelectric domain walls in 5 mol% magnesium-doped lithium niobate single crystals. Therefore one domain wall is induced into a single domain sample by the means of a local poling procedure. The produced structure is contacted through evaporated macroscopic metal electrodes. Since domain walls typically exhibit low currents a high voltage treatment is applied to persistantly increase the conductance by several orders of magnitude. A deeper understanding of the mechansimn behind the transport characteristics is given via atomic force microscopy and Cherenkov second-harmonicgeneration-microscopy. The combinaiton of surface sensitive conduction measurements and three dimensional topology detection prove to be magnificent complementary methods. A clear correlation between inclination with respect to the z-axis and local conductivity is found. Through this correllation a simple and intuitive theory is derived inside the band model, which quantitativly explains the observed behaviour. Following some key process parameters like electrode material, poling procedure and doping of the lithiumniobate crystal are varied, while their influence on the high voltage treatment is investigated. Additionally the procedure is also applied to domain walls in lithium tantalate. Lastly domain walls are observed in real time under the influence of an electric field via Cherenkov second-harmonic-generation-microscopy. There is the possibillity of either two or three dimansional investigations while the latter bears a worse time resolution. It is shown that the speed of the domain wall movement holds a gradient along the z-axis, depending on the polarity of the electric field., Die vorliegende Dissertation behandelt die Herstellung und Charakterisierung hochleitfähiger ferroelektrischer Domänenwände in 5 mol% magnesiumdotierten Lithiumniobat-Einkristallen. Dabei kommen eindomänige Probenstücke zum Einsatz in die durch lokale Umpolung eine einzelne Domänenwand induziert wird. Die makroskopische Kontaktierung der erzeugten Struktur erfolgt mit Hilfe von aufgedampften Metallelektroden. Da die Domänenwände üblicherweise nur sehr kleine Leitfähigkeiten zeigen wird durch eine Hochspannungsbehandlung selbige nachhaltig um mehrere Gröÿenordnungen erhöht. Einen tieferen Einblick in die Mechanismen der veränderten Transportcharakteristik gewähren die Rasterkraft- und Cherenkov-Second-Harmonic-Generation-Mikroskopie. Die Kombination aus oberflächensensitiver lokaler Leitfähigkeitsmessung und dreidimensionaler Topologieerfassung erweisen sich als ausgezeichnete komplementäre Methoden. Sie zeigen eine klare Korrelation zwischen Neigungswinkel der Wand im Verhältnis zur z-Achse und der gemessenen Leitfähigkeit. Über diesen Zusammenhang wird eine einfache, intuitive Theorie der Domänenwand im Bändermodell entwickelt, die das Verhalten quantitativ erklärt. Es folgt die Untersuchung verschiedener Prozessparameter wie Elektrodenmaterial, Polungsprozedur sowie Dotierung des Lithiumniobats und deren Einfluss auf die Hochspannungsbehandlung. Zudem wird diese auch an Lithiumtantalat-Kristallen getestet. Abschlieÿend wird eine Echtzeitmessung der Domänenwand unter angelegtem Feld mittels Cherenkov-Second-Harmonic-Generation-Mikroskopie durchgeführt. Diese ist dabei in zwei bzw. drei räumlichen Dimensionen möglich, wobei letztere eine geringere Zeitauflösung besitzt. Es wird deutlich, dass die Geschwindigkeit mit der sich die Domänenwand bewegt, einen Gradienten entlang der z-Achse aufweist. Dieser ist von der Polarität des elektrischen Feldes abhängig.

Skyrmions are spin textures with particle character that order themselves into so-called “skyrmion lattices” (SkLs). A skyrmion is topologically nontrivial, which adds stability against external perturbations and attracts tremendous interest from the theoretical side. Since skyrmions can be moved with small electrical currents, they are being discussed for novel spintronic applications, such as racetrack memory. Further interest has been spurred by the discovery of multiferroic compounds that also host SkLs, resulting in additional properties that are highly interesting both for applications and for fundamental research. The scope of this thesis encompasses the investigation of two completely different exemplary SkL-hosting multiferroic systems using a broad set of scanning probe microscopy techniques. These can probe multiple properties on a local scale in real space with a single measurement, examining details not resolved by non-local techniques. In the first part, there is a brief introduction to magnetic skyrmions and scanning probe microscopy with a short review of the theoretical background. The materials of interest and their known properties are then introduced. These are Cu2OSeO3, an insulator exhibiting the emergence of Bloch-type skyrmions as well as type-II multiferroicity, and the lacunar spinel chalcogenides, which were recently found to exhibit multiferroic Néel-type skyrmions pinned to magnetic easy-axes/planes together with type-I multiferroicity originating from a structural Jahn–Teller transition. The second part first presents various scanning probe studies and their results for Cu2OSeO3, where, aside from the magnetic textures of the various magnetic phases, the magnetoelectric effect and the magnetic phase transitions are investigated and described with basic theoretical models. Results show a good correlation between observations and theory, as well as with other experimental methods. Various lacunar spinels are then investigated, mostly GaV4, Skyrmionen sind teilchenartige Spintexturen, welche sich in sogenannten Skyrmionengittern anordnen. Jedes Skyrmion besitzt eine topologische Ladung. Dieses Konzept ist von bedeutendem Interesse für die Theorie und führt zu zusätzlicher Stabilität gegen externe Störungen. Da Skyrmionen mit geringen elektrischen Strömen bewegt werden können, sind sie auch Kanditaten für neuartige, spintronische Anwendungen wie den Racetrack-Speicher. Zusätzlich wurden vor einiger Zeit multiferroische Materialien entdeckt, welche ebenso Skyrmionengitter bilden und aufgrund dessen weitere, interessante Eigenschaften besitzen, welche sowohl für Anwendungen als auch für die Grundlagenforschung interessant sind. Inhalt dieser Dissertation ist die Untersuchung zweier verschiedener, exemplarischer multiferroischer Materialien mit Skyrmiongitterphasen mittels verschiedener Rastersondentechniken. Dies erlaubt das gleichzeitige Erfassen mehrerer Parameter auf einer lokalen Skala im Realraum mit einer einzigen Messung und somit die Untersuchung von Details, welche durch nicht-lokale Techniken nicht erfasst werden können. Im ersten Teil wird eine kurze Einleitung über magnetische Skyrmionen und die Rastersondenmikroskopie sowie Abrisse über deren theoretischen Hintergrund gegeben. Im Anschluß werden die untersuchten Materialien und deren Eigenschaften vorgestellt. Das erste System ist Cu2OSeO3, ein Isolator, welcher Bloch-artige Skyrmionengitter formiert und ein Typ-II Multiferroikum ist. Weitere Systeme gehören zur Klasse der lakunären Spinell-Chalkogenide, welche nach neuesten Erkenntnissen multiferroische Néel-artige Skyrmionen formieren, deren Modulationsvektor zur magnetisch harten Achse/Ebene fixiert ist. Ebenso sind diese aufgrund eines strukturellen Jahn-Teller Überganges Typ-I Multiferroika. Im zweiten Teil werden verschiedene Rastersondenuntersuchungen und ihre Ergebnisse präsentiert. Since its inception a quarter of a century ago, Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) has enabled studying contact potential differences (CPDs) on the nanometre scale. However, current KPFM investigations are limited by the bandwidth of its constituent electronic loops to the millisecond regime. To overcome this limitation, pump-probe-driven Kelvin probe force microscopy (pp-KPFM) is introduced that exploits the non-linear electric interaction between tip and sample. The time resolution surpasses the electronic bandwidth and is limited by the length of the probe pulse. In this work, probe pulse lengths as small as 4.5 ns have been realized. These probe pulses can be synchronized to any kind of pump pulses. The first system investigated with pp-KPFM is an electrically-driven organic field-effect transistor (OFET). Here, charge carrier propagation in the OFET channel upon switching the drain-source voltage is directly observed and compared to simulations based on a transmission line model. Varying the charge carrier density reveals the impeding influence of Schottky barriers on the maximum switching frequency. The second system is an optically-modulated silicon homojunction. Here, the speed of surface photovoltage (SPV) build-up is accessed and compared to timeaveraged results. Due to slow trap states, the time-averaged method is found to lack comprehensiveness. In contrast, pp-KPFM exposes two intensity-dependent recombination times on the same timescale — high-level Shockley-Read-Hall recombination in the bulk and heat-dominated recombination in the surface layer — and a delay of the SPV decay with rising frequency, which is attributed to charge carrier retention at nanocrystals. The third system is a DCV5T-Me:C60 bulk heterojunction. The SPV dynamics is probed and compared to measurements via open-circuit corrected transient charge carrier extraction by linearly increasing voltage. Charged domain walls (CDWs) in proper ferroelectrics are a novel route towards the creation of advancing functional electronics. At CDWs the spontaneous polarization obeying the ferroelectric order alters abruptly within inter-atomic distances. Upon screening, the resulting charge accumulation may result in the manifestation of novel fascinating electrical properties. Here, we will focus on electrical conduction. A major advantage of these ferroelectric DWs is the ability to control its motion upon electrical fields. Hence, electrical conduction can be manipulated, which can enrich the possibilities of current electronic devices e.g. in the field of reconfigurability, fast random access memories or any kind of adaptive electronic circuitry. In this dissertation thesis, I want to shed more light onto this new type of interfacial electronic conduction on inclined DWs mainly in lithium niobate/LiNbO3 (LNO). The expectation was: the stronger the DW inclination towards the polar axis of the ferroelectric order and, hence, the larger the bound polarization charge, the larger the conductivity to be displayed. The DW conductance and the correlation with polarization charge was investigated with a multitude of experimental methods as scanning probe microscopy, linear and nonlinear optical microscopy as well as electron microscopy. We were able to observe a clear correlation of the local DW inclination angle with the DW conductivity by comparing the three-dimensional DW data and the local DW conductance. We investigated the conduction mechanisms on CDWs by temperature-dependent two-terminal current-voltage sweeps and were able to deduce the transport to be given by small electron polaron hopping, which are formed after injection into the CDWs. The thermal activated transport is in very good agreement with time-resolved polaron luminescence spectroscopy. The applicability of this effect for non-volatile memories was investigated in metal-ferroelectric-metal stacks with CMOS co, Geladene Domänenwände (DW) in reinen Ferroelektrika stellen eine neue Möglichkeit zur Erzeugung zukünftiger, funktionalisierter Elektroniken dar. An geladenen DW ändert sich die Polarisation sehr abrupt - innerhalb nur weniger Atomabstände. Sofern die dadurch hervorgerufene Ladungsträgeranreicherung elektrisch abgeschirmt werden kann, könnte dies zu faszinierenden elektrischen Eigenschaften führen. Wir möchten uns hierbei jedoch auf die elektrische Leitfähigkeit beschränken. Ein großer Vorteil für die Anwendung leitfähiger DW ist deren kontrollierte Bewegung unter Einwirkung elektrischer Felder. Dies ermöglicht die Manipulation das Ladungstransports, welches zum Beispiel im Bereich der Rekonfigurierbarkeit, schneller Speicherbauelemente und jeder Art von adaptiven elektronischen Schaltungen Anwendung finden kann. In dieser Dissertationsschrift möchte ich diesen neuen Typus grenzflächiger elektronischen Ladungstransports an geladenen DW hauptsächlich am Beispiel von Lithiumniobat/-LiNbO3 (LNO) untersuchen. Die Annahme lautete hierbei: umso stärker die DW zur ferroelektrischen Achse geneigt ist, also desto stärker die gebundene Polarisationsladung und folglich die elektrische DW-Leitfähigkeit. Die elektrische DW-Leitfähigkeit und die Korrelation mit der Polarisationsladung wurde mit verschiedenen experimentellen Methoden wie Rasterkraftmikroskopie, linearer und nichtlinearer optischer Mikroskopie als auch Elektronenmikroskopie untersucht. Es konnte eine klare Korrelation durch Vergleich der dreidimensionalen DW-Aufzeichnungsdaten mit der lokalen Leitfähigkeit gezeigt werden. Wir haben weiterhin den Leitfähigkeitsmechanismus an geladenen DW mittels temperaturabhängiger Strom-Spannungskennlinien untersucht und konnten hierbei einen Hopping-Transport kleiner Elektronenpolaronen nachweisen, welche nach Elektroneninjektion in die geladene DW generiert werden. Der thermisch aktivierte Ladungsträgertransport ist in guter Übereinstimmung mit zeitaufgelöster Polaron-Lumineszen

Im Bereich opto-elektronischer Sensortechnik ist ein eindeutiger Trend hin zu immer kleineren Bauelementen und immer spezifischeren Messanwendungen zu erkennen. Plasmonische Materialien auf der Basis von Nanostrukturen bieten sich hierbei hervorragend für dieses Aufgabenfeld an. Deren optische Absorbanzpeaks lassen sich über die geometrischen Parameter der Nanostrukturen einfach und präzise steuern und reagieren äußerst empfindlich auf Brechungsindexänderungen im Umgebungsmedium. Die Herstellung von aufrecht stehenden, teppichartig angeordneten Nanorods auf Basis von anodisierten Aluminiumoxidmatrizen bietet als skalierbares Bottom-up-Verfahren eine einzigartige Kombination aus Prozessgeschwindigkeit, Steuerbarkeit und Kosteneffizienz. In der vorliegenden Dissertation wurde untersucht, wie sich verschiedene Sputterparameter während der Herstellung von Aluminiumdünnschichten auf deren Anodisierungseigenschaften, sowie die anschließende Porenbefüllung und die plasmonischen Eigenschaften des so erzeugten Materials auswirken. Hierzu wurde reines Aluminium bei verschiedenen Sputterleistungen und -raten abgeschieden und hinsichtlich seiner Oberflächenkonfiguration und Prozessierbarkeit im bereits etablierten Nanorodproduktionsverfahren untersucht. Gleichwohl fanden Versuche statt, Aluminiumschichten mit einer schwachen Siliziumlegierung sowie durch reaktives Sputtern mit Sauerstoff voroxidiertes Aluminium zu anodisieren und für die Nanorodherstellung zu nutzen. Als typisches Ergebnis dieser Versuche zeigt sich eine deutliche Verbesserung des Anodisierungs- und Abscheideverhaltens, wenn die Sputterparameter so gewählt werden, dass eine möglichst feinkristalline Schicht abgeschieden wird. Während die Variation der Sputterleistung nur in einer mäßigen Verbesserung und die Siliziumlegierung sogar in einer Verschlechterung der optischen Eigenschaften resultieren, zeigt sich die Sauerstoffzugabe als äußerst vorteilhaft für den Herstellungsprozess sowie die plasmonischen Eigensc, Optical sensing witnesses an increasing trend towards smaller components and more specific applications. Nanostructure-based materials excellently fulfil these kinds of task. Their optical absorbance peaks are easily and precisely controllable by changing the structures‘ geometrical parameters, and have shown to be highly sensitive to refractive index changes of the surrounding medium. The fabrication of free-standing arrays of metallic nanorods based on anodised aluminium oxide matrices as a scalable bottom-up process offers a unique combination of throughput in production, process control and cost efficiency. The scope of the present dissertation thesis is the exploration of different sputtering parameters and techniques for the fabrication of aluminium thin-films, their influence on the anodisation properties as well as subsequent pore filling, and of course the optical properties of the final plasmonic structure. For this, pure aluminium was deposited at different sputtering powers and rates, and was investigated regarding its surface configuration as well as its usability within the well-established nanorod fabrication process. Similarly, attempts were made to anodise aluminium alloyed with small quantities of silicon as well as substoichiometric aluminium oxide, which was prepared by reactive sputtering under partial oxygen pressure. As a typical result of these studies, it was found that a considerable improvement of anodisation and electroplating behaviour could be achieved, provided the sputtering conditions were chosen such that the deposited films\' crystal size becomes as small as possible. While the variation of the sputtering power lead only to a marginal improvement and the silicon admixture even deteriorated the sample quality, the use of partially oxidised aluminium layers proved to be highly advantageous for the fabrication process as well as the plasmonic properties of the final structures. Recently, the fundamental and nanoscale understanding of complex phenomena in materials research and the life sciences, witnessed considerable progress. However, elucidating the underlying mechanisms, governed by entangled degrees of freedom such as lattice, spin, orbit, and charge for solids or conformation, electric potentials, and ligands for proteins, has remained challenging. Techniques that allow for distinguishing between different contributions to these processes are hence urgently required. In this paper we demonstrate the application of scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) as a novel type of nano-probe for tracking transient states of matter. We introduce a sideband-demodulation technique that allows for probing exclusively the stimuli-induced change of near-field optical properties. We exemplify this development by inspecting the decay of an electron-hole plasma generated in SiGe thin films through near-infrared laser pulses. Our approach can universally be applied to optically track ultrafast/-slow processes over the whole spectral range from UV to THz frequencies.
