Abstract: A search for charged and neutral excited leptons is performed in 217 pb−1 of e+e− collision data collected with the L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies from 202 up to 209 GeV. The pair- and single-production mechanisms of excited electrons, muons and taus, as well as of excited electron-, muon- and tau-neutrinos, are investigated and no signals are detected. 162. Sport, Aesthetic Experience, and Art as the Ideal Embodied Metaphor

Abstract: Despite a prevalence of articles exploring links between sport and art in the 1970s and 1980s, philosophers in the new millennium pay relatively little explicit attention to issues related to aesthetics generally. After providing a synopsis of earlier debates over the questions ‘is sport art?’ and ‘are aesthetics implicit to sport?’, a pragmatically informed conception of aesthetic experience will be developed. Aesthetic experience, it will be argued, vitally informs sport ethics, game logic, and participant meaning. Finally, I will argue that embodying pragmatic conceptions of art as its ideal metaphor re-opens space to best realize the deep potential of sport as a meaningful human practice.

Exclusive rights to the use of Olympic marks and emblems in the U.S. territory granted to it in the Amateur Sports Act were leveraged by the USOC to obtain amounts of Olympic-generated revenue from the sale of television rights fees and major corporate sponsorships far larger than any of the other National Olympic Committees (NOCs) recognized by the IOC. This privileged financial position has become a divisive issue for the USOC, IOC, and the world's 204 other NOCs. The IOC and USOC have agreed to commence discussions towards the establishment of a revised method to distribute Olympic revenue to members of the Olympic Tripartite (IOC, NOCs, and International Sport Federations). We suggest broadening this discussion to include a move to increase the amount of money from these sources transferred to Olympic Organizing Committees (OCOGs) to support a more formalized legacy plan for Olympic athletic facilities in host cities, and adding a new sponsor category to the existing corporate sponsorship program, The Olympic Partners (TOP), to enhance the IOC's commitment to social responsibility and sustainability. We also propose a new formula for the distribution of Olympic television and corporate sponsorship revenue as a means of contributing to this dialogue that must target a mutually acceptable resolution in order to foster a more harmonious working relationship between the IOC and USOC.

Abstract: This paper reports development of a production method to produce a composite material that is biocompatible, with high mechanical strength and resilience. The chemical precipitation conditions necessary for the production of synthetic hydroxyapatite (HAp) were determined and include pH, temperature and rate of reaction. A gas phase purification method was optimised to remove the soot impurity from the nanotubes, with transmission electron microscopy showing the preservation of the carbon nanotubes. Subsequent development of chemical and physical reinforcement techniques to produce a HAp + carbon nanotube composite material have been trialled. Hot isostatically pressed samples showed excellent densification and strength.

Abstract: This paper reports neutron diffraction data and its analysis that characterise a biocompatible hydroxyapatite composite material. The neutron data has elucidated the crystal structure, and enabled the positions of the hydrogen atoms to be determined. The data also shows the improvement of crystallinity during the heat treatment process. An extension of the work involved looking at a hydroxyapatite – carbon nanotube composite material, and neutron diffraction has shown that the retention of the carbon nanotubes in the composite material has been successful. The nanotubes have had no affect on the hydroxyapatite structure.

Abstract: Twenty-seven samples in the series of mixed double perovskites of the type A2NiWO6 where A is a suitable alkaline earth cation or combination of such cations (Ca, Ca with Sr, Sr, Sr with Ba, or Ba) have been prepared using NiWO4 as a starting material. The structures of the oxides have been determined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction methods, with additional neutron patterns being collected for a smaller number of samples. Abstract: Cobalt oxide in the wurtzite modification has been prepared by a nonaqueous solution route and its structure determined using neutron and X-ray powder diffraction. SQUID magnetization measurements and low-temperature neutron diffraction do not show evidence for long range magnetic order, perhaps reflecting magnetic frustration intrinsic to the wurtzite structure type. Density functional calculations of the electronic structure of wurtzite CoO suggest that electron correlations must be explicitly considered in order to correctly describe this unusual material.

168. A Lifetime of Healthy Meaningful Movement: Have We Forgotten the Athletes?

Abstract: Researchers and theorists offer a strong base of research in physical activity for high risk groups, particularly sedentary children, adults, and the elderly. Little research examines the lifelong healthy movement behaviors of former competitive athletes. This paper raises some important questions relevant to this population, in particular the disturbing, yet limited research pointing to a serious failure of former competitive athletes to necessarily live longer, healthier, and more physically active lives. The scarce research that seems to highlight this neglected problem is outlined and hypotheses that may contribute to this phenomenon are offered and categorized in the following three sections: atypical physical behaviors found in the sporting realm, utilitarian uses of physical activity, and the long-term consequences of athletic identity. Suggestions are offered to direct future research and to implement practical intervention strategies and educational programs.

169. Biochemical and genetic characterization of a murine class Kappa glutathione S-transferase

Abstract: The class Kappa family of glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) currently comprises a single rat subunit (rGSTK1), originally isolated from the matrix of liver mitochondria [Harris, Meyer, Coles and Ketterer (1991) Biochem. J. 278, 137–141; Pemble, Wardle and Taylor (1996) Biochem. J. 319, 749–754]. In the present study, an expressed sequence tag (EST) clone has been identified which encodes a mouse class Kappa GST (designated mGSTK1). The EST clone contains an open reading frame of 678 bp, encoding a protein composed of 226 amino acid residues with 86% sequence identity with the rGSTK1 polypeptide. The mGSTK1 and rGSTK1 proteins have been heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli and purified by affinity chromatography. Both mouse and rat transferases were found to exhibit GSH-conjugating and GSH-peroxidase activities towards model substrates. Analysis of expression levels in a range of mouse and rat tissues revealed that the mRNA encoding these enzymes is expressed predominantly in heart, kidney, liver and skeletal muscle. Although other soluble GST isoenzymes are believed to reside primarily within the cytosol, subcellular fractionation of mouse liver demonstrates that this novel murine class Kappa GST is associated with mitochondrial fractions. Through the use of bioinformatics, the genes encoding the mouse and rat class Kappa GSTs have been identified. Both genes comprise eight exons, the protein coding region of which spans approx. 4.3 kb and 4.1 kb of DNA for mGSTK1 and rGSTK1 respectively. This conservation in primary structure, catalytic properties, tissue-specific expression, subcellular localization and gene structure between mouse and rat class Kappa GSTs indicates that they perform similar physiological functions. Furthermore, the association of these enzymes with mitochondrial fractions is consistent with them performing a specific conserved biological role within this organelle.

Abstract: Mice that lack the Nrf2 basic-region leucine-zipper transcription factor are more sensitive than wild-type (WT) animals to the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of foreign chemicals and oxidants. To determine the basis for the decrease in tolerance of the Nrf2 homozygous null mice to xenobiotics, enzyme assay, Western blotting and gene-specific real-time PCR (TaqMan®) have been used to examine the extent to which hepatic expression of GSH-dependent enzymes is influenced by the transcription factor. The amounts of protein and mRNA for class Alpha, Mu and Pi glutathione S-transferases were compared between WT and Nrf2 knockout (KO) mice of both sexes under both constitutive and inducible conditions. Among the class Alpha and class Mu transferases, constitutive expression of Gsta1, Gsta2, Gstm1, Gstm2, Gstm3, Gstm4 and Gstm6 subunits was reduced in the livers of Nrf2 mutant mice to between 3% and 60% of that observed in WT mice. Induction of these subunits by butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) was more marked in WT female mice than in WT male mice. TaqMan® analyses showed the increase in transferase mRNA caused by BHA was attenuated in Nrf2−/− mice, with the effect being most apparent in the case of Gsta1, Gstm1 and Gstm3. Amongst class Pi transferase subunits, the constitutive hepatic level of mRNA for Gstp1 and Gstp2 was not substantially affected in the KO mice, but their induction by BHA was dependent on Nrf2; this was more obvious in female mutant mice than in male mice. Nrf2 KO mice exhibited reduced constitutive expression of the glutamate cysteine ligase catalytic subunit, and, to a lesser extent, the expression of glutamate cysteine ligase modifier subunit. Little variation was observed in the levels of glutathione synthase in the different mouse lines. Thus the increased sensitivity of Nrf2−/− mice to xenobiotics can be partly attributed to a loss in constitutive expression of multiple GSH-dependent enzymes, which causes a reduction in intrinsic detoxification capacity in the KO animal. These data also indicate that attenuated induction of GSH-dependent enzymes in Nrf2−/− mice probably accounts for their failure to adapt to chronic exposure to chemical and oxidative stress.

171. A Cancer Risk Assessment of Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate: Application of the New U.S. EPA Risk Assessment Guidelines

Abstract: The current United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classification of di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) as a B2 “probable human” carcinogen is based on outdated information. New toxicology data and a considerable amount of new mechanistic evidence were used to reconsider the cancer classification of DEHP under EPA's proposed new cancer risk assessment guidelines. The total weight-of-evidence clearly indicates that DEHP is not genotoxic. In vivoadministration of DEHP to rats and mice results in peroxisome proliferation in the liver, and there is strong evidence and scientific consensus that, in rodents, peroxisome proliferation is directly associated with the onset of liver cancer. Peroxisome proliferation is a transcription-mediated process that involves activation by the peroxisome proliferator of a nuclear receptor in rodent liver called the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPARα). The critical role of PPARα in peroxisomal proliferation and carcinogenicity in mice is clearly established by the lack of either response in mice genetically modified to remove the PPARα. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain how, in rodents, peroxisome proliferation can lead to the formation of hepatocellular tumors. The general consensus of scientific opinion is that PPARα-induced mitogenesis and cell proliferation are probably the major mechanisms responsible for peroxisome proliferator-induced hepatocarcinogenesis in rodents. Oxidative stress appears to play a significant role in this increased cell proliferation. It triggers the release of TNFα by Kupffer cells, which in turn acts as a potent mitogen in hepatocytes. Rats and mice are uniquely responsive to the morphological, biochemical, and chronic carcinogenic effects of peroxisome proliferators, while guinea pigs, dogs, nonhuman primates, and humans are essentially nonresponsive or refractory; Syrian hamsters exhibit intermediate responsiveness. These differences are explained, in part, by marked interspecies variations in the expression of PPARα, with levels of expression in humans being only 1–10% of the levels found in rat and mouse liver. Recent studies of DEHP clearly indicate a nonlinear dose–response curve that strongly suggests the existence of a dose threshold below which tumors in rodents are not induced. Thus, the hepatocarcinogenic effects of DEHP in rodents result directly from the receptor-mediated, threshold-based mechanism of peroxisome proliferation, a well-understood process associated uniquely with rodents. Since humans are quite refractory to peroxisomal proliferation, even following exposure to potent proliferators such as hypolipidemic drugs, it is concluded that the hepatocarcinogenic response of rodents to DEHP is not relevant to human cancer risk at any anticipated exposure level. DEHP should be classified an unlikely human carcinogen with a margin of exposure (MOE) approach to risk assessment. The most appropriate and conservative point of reference for assessing MOEs should be 20 mg/kg/day, which is the mouse NOEL for peroxisome proliferation and increased liver weight. Exposure of the general human population to DEHP is approximately 30 μg/kg body wt/day, the major source being from residues in food. Higher exposures occur occupationally [up to about 700 μg/kg body wt/day (mainly by inhalation) based on current workplace standards] and through use of certain medical devices [e.g., up to 457 μg/kg body wt/day for hemodialysis patients (intravenous)], although these have little relevance because the routes of exposure bypass critical activation enzymes in the gastrointestinal tract.

Abstract: Fullerenes and in particular C60 have been shown to store effectively a wide range of gases from simple monatomic rare gases to diatomics and polyatomics. A review of the research in this area conducted at ANSTO is given. The trapping of Ar, Kr, Xe, and CO2 are discussed in detail whilst preliminary results pertaining to N2O, CH4, CF4, C2H6 and SF6 are also reported. A range of techniques have been used to elucidate both the structure of the new fullerene intercalated solid and the trapped gas itself. The preponderant techniques used, include infra-red absorption spectroscopy (IR), X-ray powder diffraction a (XRD), neutron powder diffraction (NRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA).

Abstract: This paper describes an analysis of sub-jet multiplicities, which are expected to be sensitive to the properties of soft gluon radiation, in hadronic decays of theZ0. Two- and three-jet event samples are selected using thek? jet clustering algorithm at a jet resolution scaley1. The mean sub-jet multiplicity as a function of the sub-jet resolution,y0, is determined separately for both event samples by reapplying the same jet algorithm at resolution scalesy01. These measurements are compared with recent perturbative QCD calculations based on the summation of leading and next-to-leading logarithms, and with QCD Monte Carlo models. The analytic calculations provide a good description of the sub-jet multiplicity seen in three- and two-jet mvents in the perturbative region (y0˜y1)), and the measured form of the data is in agreement with the expectation based on coherence of soft gluon radiation. The analysis provides good discrimination between Monte Carlo models, and those with a coherent parton shower are preferred by the data. The analysis suggests that coherence effects are present in the data.

Abstract: The inclusive production rates of π±,K± andp inZ0 decays have been measured with the OPAL detector at LEP. Using the energy loss measurement in the jet chamber, the momentum range up to the beam energy (45.6 GeV/c) has been covered. Differential cross sections and total particle yields are given. Comparisons of the inclusive momentum spectra and the total rates with predictions of the JETSET and the HERWIG Monte Carlo model are presented. The total single rates are found to be 17.05±0.43 π±, 2.42±0.13K± and 0.92±0.11p per hadronic event. Predictions of JETSET for cross sections and total rates agree very well for π±; however, for momenta greater than 4 GeV/c,K± rates are underestimated and rates are overestimated. Combined with data of other particle species there is evidence that the peak positions in the ξ=ln(1/xp) distributions show a different mass dependence for mesons and baryons. However, both JETSET and HERWIG Monte Carlo predictions agree with the observed data.

Abstract: The properties of hadronic Z0 decays with final state photons, measured with OPAL at LEP, have been compared with predictions from two different matrix element calculations ofO(aas). Two calculations, GNJETS and EEPRAD, have been investigated which use different schemes to restrict the phase space around the poles of the cross section. Assuming the E0-JADE jet definition, both calculations describe the data well in large regions of phase space forycut values around 0.06. For very large and very small jet-photon masses some deviations from the predictions have been found, indicating the importance of higher order corrections. Significant differences between the calculations are only apparent in the predicted rate of 1-jet plus photon events. The rate is higher in GNJETS which reproduces the data better than EEPRAD.

Abstract: Using 27 490 Z0→τ+τ− decays, accumulated in 1991, 1992 and 1993 with the OPAL detector at LEP, a direct test ofCP-invariance in the neutral current reactione+e−→τ+τ− is performed by measuringCP-odd observables which are proportional to the weak dipole moment of the τ-lepton. A new method based on optimalCP-odd observables constructed from the τ flight and spin directions is employed. More sensitive measurements of the real and, for the first time, the imaginary part of the weak dipole moment with highest possible signal to noise ratio are obtained. No evidence for a non-zero expectation value of the considered observables and hence forCP-violation is observed. An upper limit on the weak dipole moment of |Re(dτω)|<7.8×10−18e·cm and |Im(dτω)|<4.5×10−17e·cm with 95% confidence level is obtained.

Abstract: An upper limit for the?t mass is determined through the kinematic reconstruction of the decayt?5p±?t in the OPAL detector at LEP. The limit is obtained using a new method based on the comparison of the two-dimensional distribution of energy and invariant mass of the five-pion system with expectations from different neutrino mass hypotheses. From a sample of five events surviving the selection criteria we obtain an upper limit of 74 MeV at 95% confidence level. It is the first measurement at LEP energies, where the larger average multiplicity of events makes the suppression of this background more robust compared to lower energies.

Abstract: The fraction of ; events in hadronicZ0 decays has been measured using the data collected by OPAL in 1992 and 1993. The presence of electrons or muons from semileptonic decays of bottom hadrons and the detection of bottom hadron decay vertices were used together to obtain an event sample enriched in decays. To reduce the systematic error on the measurement of the fraction, the efficiency of the event tagging was obtained from the data by comparing the numbers of events having a bottom signature in either one or both thrust hemispheres. A value of $$\frac{{\Gamma (Z^0 \to b\bar b)}}{{\Gamma (Z^0 \to hadrons)}} = 0.2171 \pm 0.0021 \pm 0.0021$$ was obtained, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The uncertainty on the decay width is not included in these errors. A fractional variation of this width by ±8% about its Standard Model prediction would result in a variation of the measured fraction of ±0.0015.

Abstract: We report on a measurement of the tau lepton polarization and its forward-backward asymmetry at the Z0 resonance using the OPAL detector. This measurement is based on analyses of the , , t?p(K)vt and t??vt from a sample of 30663 e+e+?t+t- events collected during the years 1990 to 1992. Assuming that the tau lepton decays according to V-A theory, we measure the average t polarization to be t>=(-14.9±1.9±1.3)% and the t polarization forward-backward asymmetry to be ApolFB=(-8.9±2.2±0.9)%, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. These results are consistent with the hypothesis of lepton universality. When combined under the assumption of universality, our results can be interpreted as a measurement of sin2?efflept=0.2321±0.0023 within the context of the Standard Model.

Abstract: In hadronic Z0 decays collected by the OPAL experiment at LEP, event shape variables such as jet rates, jet masses, thrust and the energy-energy correlation for events are compared to those for all flavours using secondary vertex information to tag the b quarks. The measured distributions are found to be well described by anO"(αs) calculation for heavy quarks as well as by parton shower simulations. We also determine the ratio of the strong coupling constant for b quarks and all quarks, αsb/αsincl, from these distributions. We find $$\alpha _s^b /\alpha _s^{incl} = 0.994 \pm 0.005_{ - 0.012}^{ + 0.010} ,$$ where the errors are the statistical and systematic errors. The result can be converted into the ratio for b quarks relative to the complementary flavours udsc αsb/αsudsc=0.992±0.007-0.015+0.013.

Abstract: Results are reported of a study of neutral vector meson production in multihadronicZ0 decays in the OPAL experiment at LEP. Pions and kaons have been identified by specific ionisation energy loss andK±p± andK+K- mass spectra have been fitted, in bins of the scaled momentum variablexp, to combinations of resonance signals and non-resonant backgrounds. Rates are given forK*(892)° and ø(1020), and production cross sections are compared to the predictions of Monte Carlo models. Overall multiplicities have been determined as 0.76±0.07±0.06K*(892)° and 0.086±0.015±0.010 ø(1020) per hadronicZ0 decay (the quoted errors are respectively statistical and systematic). Momentum dependent distortions of the pp mass spectra, possibly associated indirectly with Bose-Einstein effects, have prevented reliable measurement of the ?(770)° cross section in this study.

Abstract: We report on an improved measurement of the mass of theZ0 boson, its total width and its partial decay widths into hadrons and leptons, as well as the effective axial vector and vector couplings to charged leptons. These measurements are based on a data set of approximately 160 000 hadronicZ0 decays and 18 000 decays into electrons, muons and taus, recorded by the OPAL experiment at centre of mass energies near the mass of theZ0. The total width and the partial widths to visible final states, derived from the measured cross sections, are used to extract the invisible width. The effective couplings of theZ0 to charged leptons are studied using measurements of the lepton pair cross sections and forward-backward asymmetries at the different centre of mass energy points of theZ0 scan. The implications of our results in the context of the Standard Model are discussed.

Abstract: The OPAL detector at LEP is used to measure the branching ratio of theZ0 into invisible particles by measuring the cross section of single photon events ine+e- collisions at centre-of-mass energies near theZ0 resonance. In a data sample of 5.3 pb-1, we observe 73 events with single photons depositing more than 1.5 GeV in the electromagnetic calorimeter, with an expected background of 8±2 events not associated with invisibleZ0 decay. With this data we determine theZ0 invisible width to be 0.50±0.07±0.03 GeV, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. This corresponds to 3.0±0.4±0.2 light neutrino generations in the Standard Model.

Abstract: The nongenotoxic carcinogens phenobarbitone (PB) and methyl clofenapate (MCP) and the hepatomitogen pregnenolone 16α carbonitrile (PCN) are direct inducers of hepatic S-phase in rats, whereas the S-phase seen after partial hepatectomy is regenerative. We have investigated S-phase and immediate-early gene expression (c-myc and c-jun) in rat liver following these treatments to study the differences in gene expression associated with direct vs. regenerative responses. Both partial hepatectomy (one- and two-thirds) and mitogen treatment caused an increase in hepatic S-phase that peaked around 36 hours. Two-thirds partial hepatectomy caused the greatest increase in S-phase followed by one-third partial hepatectomy, then the mitogens PCN, MCP, and PB in that order. This order of response was also seen with c-jun and to a lesser degree with c-myc expression, suggesting that immediate-early gene expression might be linked not only to regenerative S-phase but also to direct mitogen-induced responses. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Abstract: Jet production rates in hadronicZ0 decays are studied using four different recombination schemes to define resolvable jets. The strong coupling constant αs( ) is determined in fits of the correspondingO(αs2) QCD calculations to the differential 2-jet distributionsD2(y). Hadronisation corrections and renormalisation scale uncertainties are found to be different for each recombination scheme. Within their overall systematic uncertainties, the four schemes yield consistent values of αs( ), leading to a final result of $$\alpha _s (M_{Z^0 } ) = 0.118 \pm 0.008.$$ .

Abstract: The value of the strong coupling constant, , is determined from a study of 15 different observables in hadronicZ0 and τ decays. The study includes global event shape variables, jet production rates, energy correlations, theZ0 line shape and decay asymmetries and the hadronic branching fraction of τ-leptons. Differences between the αs values from the different observables can be consistently attributed to unknown higher order contributions to the calculations. These uncertaities may be parametrized by variations of the renormalization scale and of the parton virtuality to which the data are corrected, separately for each observable, resulting in a consistent description of the event shapes, jet rates and energy correlations with the value in. The error is dominated by the theoretical uncertainties. Application of recent calculations which include the resummation of leading and next-to-leading logarithms to all orders for some observables confirm this result with a reduced sensitivity to renormalization scale variations. TheZ0 line shapes and τ-lepton branching ratios yield and , respectively, in. These measurements and their uncertainties are entirely independent of each other and from event shape and jet observables; the good agreement of the resulting αs values thus constitutes an important consistency check of the reliability of perturbative QCD.

Abstract: The properties of final state photons in multihadronic decays of theZ0 and those of the recoiling hadronic system are discussed and compared with theoretical expectations. The yield of two and three jet events with final state photons is found to be in good agreement with the expectation from a matrix element calculation ofO(ααs. Uncertainties in the interpretation of the theoretical calculation do not yet permit a final assessment of events with just one reconstructed jet. Comparing the rates of two jet events with a photon to those of three jet events in the inclusive multihadronic sample, the strong coupling constant in second order is determined asαs =0.122±0.010, taking into account only the statistical and experimental systematic errors. It is found that an abelian model of the strong interaction does not describe the data. The comparison of the total yield and the jet rates with QCD shower programs shows better agreement with the ARIADNE model than with the JETSET model. Both programs are found to describe well the photon properties and the properties of the residual hadronic event.

Abstract: The strong coupling constant, αs, has been determined in hadronic decays of theZ0 resonance, using measurements of seven observables relating to global event shapes, energy correlations and jet rates. The data have been compared with resummed QCD calculations, which are combined with theO(s2) theory. The seven measurements agree to about 10% and the final results, based on a weighted average, is: $$\alpha _s (M_{Z^0 } ) = 0.120 \pm 0.006,$$ where the error includes both experimental and theoretical uncertainties. This value corresponds to renormalization scale and the error includes the uncertainty in this choice of scale. The present measurement complements previous determinations using theO(s2) QCD matrix elements alone, and yields a compatible result, with comparable errors.

Abstract: The fraction of events in hadronicZ0 decays has been measured from the yield of leptons in the data samples collected by OPAL in 1990 and 1991. A sample enriched in events containing decays was obtained by requiring the presence of an electron or muon with high momentum and high momentum component transverse to the associated hadronic jet. After accounting for backgrounds and acceptances, a value of $$\frac{{\Gamma ({\rm Z}^0 \to b\bar b)}}{{\Gamma ({\rm Z}^0 \to hadrons)}} = 0.220 \pm 0.002 \pm 0.0006 \pm 0.011$$ was obtained. The first two errors reflect the data statistics and the systematic uncertainties arising from detector modelling uncertainties, respectively. The third error includes systematic effects fromb andc fragmentation and decay uncertainties.

198. The crystal structure of Zr2NiD4

Abstract: The crystal structure of Zr2NiD4at room temperature has been investigated by high resolution neutron powder diffraction. The diffraction pattern has been successfully fitted on the basis of a monoclinic structure in space group I2/cwith cell parameters a= 0.6789 nm, b= 0.6758 nm, c= 0.5675 nm, β= 91.04° relative to the neutron wavelength of 0.1893(1) nm. The site occupancies of the deuterium atoms are compared with model calculations and results from previous X-ray and neutron data from Zr2Ni hydrides and deuterides of similar compositions based on the similar tetragonal CuAl2-type structure of Zr2Ni.

Abstract: We present measurements of the hadronic photon structure functionF2γ(x), in twoQ2 ranges with mean values of 5.9 GeV2 and 14.7 GeV2. The data were taken by the OPAL experiment at LEP, with close to theZ0 mass and correspond to an integratede+e− luminosity of 44.8 pb−1. In the context of a QCD-based model we find the quark transverse momentum cutoff separating the vector meson dominance (VMD) and perturbative QCD regions to be 0.27±0.10 GeV. We confirm that there is a significant pointlike component of the photon when the probe photon hasQ2>4 GeV2. Our measurements extend to lower values ofx than any previous experiment, and no increase ofF2γ(x) is observed.
