The leading twist transverse momentum dependent parton distribution function h_1T^perp, which is sometimes called ``pretzelosity,'' is studied. We review the theoretical properties of this function, and present bag model predictions. We observe an interesting relation valid in a large class of relativistic models: The difference between helicity and transversity distributions, which is often said to be a 'measure of relativistic effects' in nucleon, is nothing but the pretzelosity distribution. Pretzelosity is chirally odd and can be accessed in combination with the Collins effect in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, where it gives rise to an azimuthal single spin asymmetry proportional to sin(3phi-phi_S). We discuss the preliminary deuteron target data from COMPASS, on that observable and make predictions for future experiments on various targets at JLab, COMPASS and HERMES., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering off transversely polarized targets give information on, among other fascinating effects, a pseudo time-reversal odd parton distribution function, the 'Sivers function'. In this proceeding we review the extractions of this function from HERMES and COMPASS data. In particular, the HERMES pion and kaon data suggest significant sea-quarks contributions at $x \simeq 0.15$ to the Sivers effect. We present a new fit that includes all relevant sea quark distributions and gives a statistically satisfactory overall description of the data, but does not describe ideally the $K^+$ data from HERMES. We argue that measurements of the pion- and kaon Sivers effect at CLAS12, and COMPASS, will clarify the situation., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures. We consider an ordered ferromagnet in the vicinity of a T=0 transition into a paramagnet. We show that the free energy and the transverse and longitudinal static susceptibilities contain non-analyticities which destroy a continuous second-order transition. Depending on the parameters, the transition either becomes first-order, or occurs via an intermediate spiral phase., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries of identified hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering of 160 GeV/c muons on a transversely polarised 6LiD target at COMPASS are presented. The results for charged pions and charged and neutral kaons correspond to all data available, which were collected from 2002 to 2004. For all final state particles both the Collins and Sivers asymmetries turn out to be small, compatible with zero within the statistical errors, in line with the previously published results for not identified charged hadrons, and with the expected cancellation between the u- and d-quark contributions., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, added author Efremov, calculated pure kaon asymmetries instead of those for experimental kaon/pion mixture (mainly error affected)

We study single-ion and exchange anisotropy effects in equal-spin $s_1$ tetramer single molecule magnets exhibiting $T_d$, $D_{4h}$, $D_{2d}$, $C_{4h}$, $C_{4v}$, or $S_4$ ionic point group symmetry. We first write the group-invariant quadratic single-ion and symmetric anisotropic exchange Hamiltonians in the appropriate local coordinates. We then rewrite these local Hamiltonians in the molecular or laboratory representation, along with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriay (DM) and isotropic Heisenberg, biquadratic, and three-center quartic Hamiltonians. Using our exact, compact forms for the single-ion spin matrix elements, we evaluate the eigenstate energies analytically to first order in the microscopic anisotropy interactions, corresponding to the strong exchange limit, and provide tables of simple formulas for the energies of the lowest four eigenstate manifolds of ferromagnetic (FM) and anitiferromagnetic (AFM) tetramers with arbitrary $s_1$. For AFM tetramers, we illustrate the first-order level-crossing inductions for $s_1=1/2,1,3/2$, and obtain a preliminary estimate of the microscopic parameters in a Ni$_4$ from a fit to magnetization data. Accurate analytic expressions for the thermodynamics, electron paramagnetic resonance absorption and inelastic neutron scattering cross-section are given, allowing for a determination of three of the microscopic anisotropy interactions from the second excited state manifold of FM tetramers. We also predict that tetramers with symmetries $S_4$ and $D_{2d}$ should exhibit both DM interactions and multiferroic states, and illustrate our predictions for $s_1=1/2, 1$., Comment: 30 pages, 14 figures, submitted to Phys. Magnetic resonance in ordered state is shown to be the direct method for distinguishing the orbital ground state. The example of perovskite titanates, particularly, LaTiO3 and YTiO3, is considered. External magnetic field resonance spectra of these crystals reveal glaring qualitative dependence on assumed orbital state of the compounds: orbital liquid or static orbital structure. Certain exact relations among transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions due to QCD equations of motion turn into approximate ones upon the neglect of pure twist-3 terms. On the basis of available data from HERMES we test the practical usefulness of one such ``Wandzura-Wilczek-type approximation'', namely of that connecting h_{1L}^{\perp(1)a}(x) to h_L^a(x), and discuss how it can be further tested by future CLAS and COMPASS data., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

For equal-spin $s_1$ tetramer single molecule magnets with ionic point groups $g=T_d, D_{4h}, D_{2d}, C_{4h}, C_{4v}$, and $S_4$, we write the group-invariant single-ion, Dzaloshinskii-Moriya, and symmetric anisotropic near-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor exchange Hamiltonians using the respective local axial and azimuthal vector groups. The anisotropic exchange renormalized near-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor isotropic exchange interactions are $\tilde{J}_g$ and $\tilde{J}_g'$. Using our exact, compact forms for the single-ion matrix elements, we evaluate the eigenstates of the full Hamiltonian to first order in the various interactions. There are two types of ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) tetramers. In Type I, $\tilde{J}_g'-\tilde{J}_g>0$, the tetramers act as two dimers with the maximal pair quantum numbers $s_{13}=s_{24}=2s_1$ at low temperature. Type II tetramers with $\tilde{J}_g'-\tilde{J}_g<0$ are frustrated, with minimal values of the pair quantum numbers $s_{13}$ and $s_{24}$ at low temperature. For both Type I and Type II AFM tetramers, we evaluate the first-order level-crossing inductions analytically for arbitary $s_1$, and illustrate the results for $s_1=1/2, 1, 3/2$. Accurate Hartree expressions for the thermodynamics, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) absorption and inelastic neutron scattering cross-section are given. The Collins fragmentation function is extracted from HERMES data on azimuthal single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering, and BELLE data on azimuthal asymmetries in electron positron annihilations. A Gaussian model is assumed for the distribution of transverse parton momenta and predictions are used from the chiral quark-soliton model for the transversity distribution function. We find that the HERMES and BELLE data yield a consistent picture of the Collins fragmentation function which is compatible with COMPASS data and the information previously obtained from an analysis of DELPHI data. We present a microscopic theory of single molecule magnets. From our exact single-ion spin matrix elements for four arbitrary spins, we study the single-ion anisotropy of equal spins exhibiting $T_d$, $D_{2d}$, or $C_{4v}$ molecular group symmetry. Each group generates site-dependent single-ion anisotropy. For weak anisotropy, accurate Hartree expressions for the magnetization, specific heat, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) absorption, and inelastic neutron scattering cross-section are given. We present a model of equal spin $s_1$ dimer single molecule magnets. The spins within each dimer interact via the Heisenberg and the most general set of four quadratic anisotropic spin interactions with respective strengths $J$ and $\{J_j\}$, and with the magnetic induction ${\bf B}$. We solve the model exactly for $s_1=1/2, 1, 5/2$, and for antiferromagnetic Heisenberg couplings ($J<0$), present ${\bf M}({\bf B})$ curves at low $T$ for these cases. Low-$T$ $C_V({\bf B})$ curves for $s_1=1/2$ and electron paramagnetic susceptibility $\chi({\bf B},\omega)$ for $s_1=1$ are also provided. For weak anisotropy interactions, we employ a perturbative treatment, and show that the Hartree and extended Hartree approximations lead to reliable analytic results at low $T$ and large $B$ for these quantities and for the inelastic neutron scattering cross-section $S({\bf B}, {\bf q},\omega)$. Our results are discussed with regard to existing ${\bf M}({\bf B})$ experiments on $s_1=5/2$ Fe$_2$ dimer single molecule magnets, and suggest that one of them contains a substantial amount of single-ion anisotropy, without any sizeable global spin anisotropy. We urge further experiments of the above types on single crystals of Fe$_2$ and on some $s_=9/2$ [Mn$_4$]$_2$ dimers, in order to elucidate the precise values of the various microscopic interactions., Comment: 30 pages, 25 figures, submitted to Phys. A possibility to accelerate a high intensity polarized proton beam up to 70 GeV at the IHEP accelerator, extract it from the main ring and deliver to several experimental setups is being studied now. We propose to study a wealth of single- and double-spin observables in various reactions using longitudinally and transverserly polarized proton beams at U70. We present an exactly solvable model of equal spin $s_1$ dimer single molecule magnets. The spins within each dimer interact via the Heisenberg and the most general quadratic global and local (single-ion) anisotropic spin interactions, and with the magnetic induction ${\bf B}$. For antiferromagnetic couplings and $s_1>1/2$, the low temperature $T$ magnetization ${\bm M}({\bm B})$ exhibits $2s_1$ steps of universal height and midpoint slope, the $s$th step of which occurs at the non-universal level-crossing magnetic induction $B_{s,s_1}^{\rm lc}(\theta,\phi)$, where $\theta,\phi$ define the direction of ${\bm B}$. The specific heat $C_V$ exhibits zeroes as $T\to0$ at these $B_{s,s_1}^{\rm lc}(\theta,\phi)$ values, which are equally surrounded by universal peak pairs as $T\to0$. The non-universal $B_{s,s_1}^{\rm lc}(\theta,\phi)$ values lead to a rich variety of magnetization plateau behavior, the structure and anisotropy of which depend upon the various global and local anisotropic spin interaction energies. We solve the model exactly for $s_1=1/2$, 1, and 5/2, and present ${\bm M}({\bm B})$ and $C_V({\bm B})$ curves at low $T$ for these cases. For weakly anisotropic dimers, rather simple analytic formulas for ${\bm M}({\bm B})$ and $C_V({\bm B})$ at arbitrary $s_1$ accurately fit the exact solutions at sufficiently low $T$ or large $B$. An expression for $B_{s,s_1}^{\rm lc}(\theta,\phi)$ accurate to second order in the four independent anisotropy energies is derived. Our results are discussed with regard to existing experiments on $s_1=5/2$ Fe$_2$ dimers, suggesting further experiments on single crystals of these and some $s_1=9/2$ Mn$_4$]$_2$ dimers are warranted., Comment: 22 pages, 26 figures, submitted to PRR

We consider the orbital ordering in LaMnO3 and similar systems, proceeding from the band picture. We show that for the realistic magnetic structure of A-type there exists a complete nesting betweeen two e_g-bands. As a result there occurs an instability towards an excitonic insulator-like state -- an electron-hole pairing with the wave vector Q=(\pi,\pi), which opens a gap in the spectrum and makes the system insulating. In the resulting state there appeasr an orbital ordering -- orbital density wave (ODW), the type of which coincides with those existing in LaMnO3., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

The probabilistic model of parton distributions, previously developed by one of the authors, is generalized to include the transversity distribution. When interference effects are attributed to quark level only, the intrinsic quark motion produces the transversity, which is about twice as large as the usual polarized distribution. Increasing experimental and theoretical evidence points towards a dual nature of the 5$f$ electrons in actinide-based strongly correlated metallic compounds, with some 5$f$ electrons being localized and others delocalized. In a recent paper (PRB xxx, 2004), we suggested the interplay of intra-atomic correlations as described by Hund's rules and a weakly anisotropic hopping (hybridization) as a possible mechanism. The purpose of the present work is to provide a first step towards a microscopic description of partial localization in solids by analyzing how well various approximation schemes perform when applied to small clusters. It is found that many aspects of partial localization are described appropriately both by a variational wavefunction of Gutzwiller type and by a treatment which keeps only those interactions which are present in LDA+U calculations. In contrast, the energies and phase diagram calculated within the Hartree Fock approximation show little resemblence with the exact results. Enhancement of hopping anisotropy by Hund's rule correlations are found in all approximations., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

Predictions are made for single spin azimuthal asymmetries due to the Collins effect in pion production from semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering off transversely and longitudinally polarized targets for the HERMES and COMPASS experiments. The x-dependence of the asymmetries is evaluated using the parton distribution functions from the chiral quark-soliton model. The overall normalization of the predicted asymmetries is determined by the information on the Collins fragmentation function extracted from previous HERMES data on azimuthal asymmetries from a longitudinally polarized target. The single spin asymmetries from the transversely polarized proton target are found to be about 20% for positive and neutral pions both at HERMES and COMPASS. For a longitudinally polarized target we obtain for COMPASS a sin(phi) asymmetry of 1% and a sin(2phi) asymmetry of about 3%., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, Ref.[29] added

We show that in manganites close to half-doping novel non-bipartite magnetic phases appear due to the interplay between double exchange, superexchange and orbital ordering. In considerable part of the phase diagram the groundstate has a magnetic order that is intermediate between the canonical magnetic CE-phase and a state that we identify as the recently observed Zener polaron state. The intermediate phase shows a type of charge ordering that breaks inversion symmetry and is therefore predicted to be ferroelectric., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We study the effect of intra-atomic correlations on anisotropies of hopping of 5f electrons. It is shown that they may considerably enhance these anisotropies to the extend that electrons in some of the 5f orbitals remain localized. This provide a microscopic basis for a previously made assumption that some of the 5f electrons must be partially localized when Fermi surfaces and effective masses of the component are calculated. Calculations are performed on two- and three-sites clusters. They include phase diagrams in the presence and absence of an external magnetic field as function of anisotropic hopping., Comment: REVTEX, 10 pages, 11 figures

Recently it has been argued that the transverse momentum dependent twist-2 Sivers distribution function does not vanish in QCD. Therefore both, the Collins and Sivers effects, should be considered in order to explain the azimuthal single spin asymmetries A(UL) in pion production in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic lepton scattering of a longitudinally polarized target. On the basis of presently available phenomenological information on the Sivers function we estimate that for those asymmetries A(UL) in the kinematic region of the HERMES experiments the Sivers effect can be neglected with respect to the Collins effect. It is argued that the same feature holds also for the COMPASS and CLAS experiments. Properties of the nucleon twist-3 distribution function e(x) are reviewed. It is emphasized that the QCD equations of motion imply the existence of a delta-function at x=0 in e(x), which gives rise to the pion-nucleon sigma-term. According to the resulting ``practical'' DIS sum rules the first and the second moment of e(x) vanish, a situation analogue to that of the pure twist-3 distribution function $\bar{g}_2(x)$., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures, new references and figures added

We consider a model of Fermi-Bose mixture with strong hard-core repulsion between particles of the same sort and attraction between particles of different sorts. In this case, besides the standard anomalous averages of the type $$; $$ and $$, a pairing between fermion and boson of the type $bc$ is possible. This pairing corresponds to a creation of composite fermions in the system. At low temperatures and equal densities of fermions and bosons composite fermions are further paired in quartets. Our investigations are important for high-$T_c$ superconductors and in connection with recent observation of weakly bound dimers in magnetic traps at ultralow temperatures., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

First information on the chirally odd twist-3 proton distribution function e(x) is extracted from the azimuthal asymmetry, A_{LU}, in the electro-production of pions from deeply inelastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons off unpolarized protons, which has been recently measured by CLAS collaboration. Spin azimuthal asymmetries in pion electro-production in deep inelastic scattering off longitudinally polarized protons, measured by HERMES, are well reproduced theoretically with no adjustable parameters. We calculate the static and dynamic properties of single crystal, single molecule magnets consisting of equal spin $S=1/2$ or 5/2 dimers. The spins in each dimer interact with each other via the Heisenberg exchange interaction and with the magnetic induction ${\bf B}$ via the Zeeman interaction, and interdimer interactions are negligible. For antiferromagnetic couplings, the static magnetization and specific heat exhibit interesting low temperature $T$ and strong ${\bf B}$ quantum effects. We calculate the frequency spectrum of the Fourier transform of the real part of the time autocorrelation function ${\cal C}_{11}(t)$ for arbitrary $T, {\bf B}$, and compare our results with those obtained for classical spins. Predictions are made for azimuthal asymmetries in pion and kaon production from SIDIS off a longitudinally polarized deuterium target for HERMES kinematics, based on information on the 'Collins fragmentation function' from DELPHI data and on predictions for the transversity distribution function from non-perturbative calculations in the chiral quark-soliton model. Recently HERMES has observed an azimuthal asymmetry in electro-production of neutral pions in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of unpolarized positrons off longitudinally polarized protons. This asymmetry (like those observed in the production of charged pions) is well reproduced theoretically by using the non-perturbative calculation of the proton transversity distribution in the effective chiral quark-soliton model combined with experimental DELPHI-data on the new T-odd Collins fragmentation function. There are no free, adjustable parameters in the analysis. Using the $z$-dependence of the HERMES azimuthal asymmetry and the calculated transversity distributions the z-dependence of the Collins fragmentation function is obtained. We predict a p-wave Cooper pairing of the spin-polarized fermions in a binary fermion-boson mixture due to the exchange of density fluctuations of the bosonic medium. We then examine the dependence of the Cooper paring temperature on the parameters of the system. We finally estimate the effect of combining the boson-induced interaction with other pairing mechanisms, e.g the Kohn-Luttinger one, and find that the critical temperature of p-wave Cooper pairing can be realistic for experiment., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures
