Background: Subacute bacterial endocarditis (SBE) occasionally exhibits positive cytoplasmic anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (c-ANCA) of the anti-proteinase-3 (PR-3) type. Clinically, it mimics ANCA-associated vasculitis, such as Wegener's disease with glomerulonephritis. Lung abscesses are the most common manifestation of lung involvement. We herein report a case of culture-negative SBE strongly c-ANCA/PR3-positive accompanied by pulmonary involvement and glomerulonephritis. In this case, we took biopsies of both the lung and kidney, although renal biopsy is usually preferred over lung biopsy. The lung biopsy showed severe alveolar capillaritis, suggesting vasculitis consistent with polyangiitis. The renal biopsy revealed glomerulonephritis with a membranoproliferative pattern. To our knowledge, this is the first such reported case., Case Presentation: A 68-year-old Chinese male patient presented to our hospital with a fever, cough, chest pain, and recurrent peripheral edema. He had a past medical history significant for treated schistosomiasis 20 years previously. Physical examination revealed palpable purpura, mild hypertension, hepatosplenomegaly, and a holosystolic cardiac murmur (Levine 2/6). Echocardiography showed tricuspid valve vegetations with moderate to severe regurgitation. Serum c-ANCA/PR3 and cryoglobulin were strongly positive. Renal biopsy results indicated membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis with several crescents. Chest CT revealed multiple intraparenchymal and subpleural nodules, and lung biopsy showed polyangiitis. The patient's ANCA titers, glomerulonephritis, and pulmonary injury all resolved after antibiotic therapy., Conclusion: SBE may present with positive c-ANCA/PR3, multiple pulmonary nodules, pulmonary polyangiitis, and glomerulonephritis clinically mimicking granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Wegener's granulomatosis).

Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) is a widely used technique to investigate the interactions and dynamics of molecules, below micromolar concentrations. Silver nanostructure (AgNS) substrates can extend the applicability of FCS to higher concentrations, which is useful for many biologically relevant reactions. Additionally, these substrates can improve detection efficiency by increasing fluorescence signal intensities. The ease of preparation of the AgNS substrates in comparison to previously investigated materials prepared by top-down nanofabrication is expected to make them readily available and suitable for various FCS applications.

Thylakoids in Synechocystis 6803, though apparently uniform in appearance in ultrastructure, were found to consist of segments which were functionally dissimilar and had distinct proteomes. These thylakoid segments can be isolated from Synechocystis 6803 by successive ultracentrifugation of cell free extracts at 40,000×g (40 k segments), 90,000×g (90 k segments) and 150,000×g (150 k segments). Electron microscopy showed differences in their appearance. 40 k segments looked feathery and fluffy, whereas the 90 k and 150 k thylakoid membrane segments appeared tiny and less fluffy. The absorption spectra showed heterogeneous distribution of pigment-protein complexes in the three types of segments. The photochemical activities of Photosystem I (PSI) and Photosystem II (PSII) showed unequal distributions in 40 k, 90 k and 150 k segments which were substantiated with low temperature fluorescence measurements. The ratio of PSII/PSI fluorescence emission at 77 K (λ(ex) = 435 nm) was highest in 150 k segments indicating higher PSII per unit PSI in these segments. The chlorophyll fluorescence lifetimes in the membranes, determined with a time-correlated single-photon counting technique, could be resolved in three components: τ(1)  (=) <40 ps, τ(2)  (=) 425-900 ps and τ(3)  (=) 2.4-3.2 ns. The percentage contribution of the fastest component (τ(1)) decreased in the order 40 k > 90 k > 150 k segments whereas that of the other two components showed a reversed trend. These studies indicated differential distribution of pigment-protein complexes in the three membrane segments suggesting heterogeneity in the thylakoids of Synechocystis 6803.

Aim: This study was undertaken to assess the nutritional status of 6-10 years old Nepalese children by measuring some haematological and biochemical parameters., Methods: Nutritional status was assessed by height-for-age z-score. Total count of red blood corpuscles (TC of RBC), packed cell volume, haemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration were measured. Biochemical parameters such as serum iron, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), serum ferritin, serum transferrin, transferrin saturation (TS) and serum albumin were also measured. Serum folate and vitamin B(12) were measured in well-nourished and undernourished children., Results: TC of RBC, serum iron, serum ferritin, TS and serum albumin of stunted children were significantly lower (p < 0.05) than that of well-nourished children. MCV, MCH, TIBC and serum transferrin of stunted children were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that of well-nourished children. Serum folate and vitamin B(12) values of stunted children were significantly lower (p < 0.001) than that of well-nourished children., Conclusion: A mild iron deficiency was found in stunted Nepalese children. The serum ferritin has been identified as a sensitive marker for measurement of iron status in surveyed children. Background: The maintenance of oxygenation is a commonly encountered problem in obese patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. There is no specific guideline on the ventilation modes for this group of patients. Although several studies have been performed to determine the optimal ventilatory settings in these patients, the answer is yet to be found. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of pressure-controlled ventilation (PCV) in comparison with volume-controlled ventilation (VCV) for maintaining oxygenation during laparoscopic cholecystectomy in obese patients., Methods: One hundred and two adult patients of ASA physical status I and II, Body Mass Index of 30-40 kg/m(2), scheduled for laparoscopic cholecystectomy were included in this prospective randomized open-label parallel group study. To start with, all patients received VCV. Fifteen minutes after creation of pneumoperitoneum, they were randomized to receive either VCV (Group V) or PCV (Group P). The ventilatory parameters were adjusted accordingly to maintain the end-tidal CO(2) between 35 and 40 mmHg. Respiratory rate, tidal volume, minute ventilation and peak airway pressure were noted. Arterial blood gas analyses were done 15 min after creation of pneumoperitoneum and at 20-min intervals thereafter till the end of the surgery. All data were analysed statistically., Results: Patients in Group P showed a statistically significant (P < 0.05) higher level of PaO(2) and lower value of PAO(2)-PaO(2) than those in Group V., Conclusion: PCV is a more effective mode of ventilation in comparison with VCV regarding oxygenation in obese patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the studies involving the interactions of fluorophores with plasmonic nanostructures or nanoparticles. These interactions lead to several favorable effects such as increase in the fluorescence intensities, increased photostabilities, and reduced excited-state lifetimes that can be exploited to improve the capabilities of present fluorescence methodologies. In this regard, we report the use of newly developed silver-gold nanocomposite (Ag-Au-NC) structures as substrates for metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF). The Ag-Au-NC substrates have been prepared by a one-step galvanic replacement reaction from thin silver films coated on glass slides. This approach is simple and suitable for the fabrication of MEF substrates with large area. We have observed about 15-fold enhancement in the fluorescence intensity of ATTO655 from ensemble fluorescence measurements using these substrates. The fluorescence enhancement on the Ag-Au-NC substrates is also accompanied by a reduction in the fluorescence lifetime of ATTO655, which is consistent with the fluorophore-plasmon coupling mechanism. Single-molecule fluorescence measurements have been performed to gain more insight into the metal-fluorophore interactions and to unravel the heterogeneity in the interaction of individual fluorophores with the fabricated substrates. The single-molecule studies are in good agreement with the ensemble measurements and show maximum enhancements of ~50-fold for molecules located in proximity to the "hotspots" on the substrates. In essence, the Ag-Au-NC substrates have a very good potential for various MEF applications.

Using human insulin, we report for the first time, the evaluation of fluorescence lifetime of an extrinsically added fluorogenic dye, Thioflavin T (ThT), as a more sensitive and convenient method for the assessment of fibrillation in the pre-fibrillar regime., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2012)

Metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) is a newly emerging phenomenon in which the near-field interactions of fluorophores with the plasmons in metallic nanostructures can lead to substantial fluorescence enhancements. In the present study, we have investigated the use of silver-gold nanocomposite (Ag-Au-NC) structures, prepared by the galvanic replacement reaction of silver with gold, as plasmonic substrates for MEF. We have observed significant enhancement in the fluorescence intensities and decrease in the fluorescence lifetimes of two commonly used dyes, ATTO655 and Cy5, using the fabricated Ag-Au-NC substrates. Interestingly, the fluorescence enhancement depends on the amount of residual silver present in the substrates after the galvanic replacement reaction. Our results show that the galvanic replacement reaction is a very facile and powerful route to prepare Ag-Au-NC substrates that can be suitable for various MEF based applications.

We assessed the anti-V3 antibody content and viral neutralization potential of the plasma of 63 HIV-1-infected patients (antiretroviral naïve=39, treated=24) against four primary isolates (PIs) of clade C and a tier 1 clade B isolate SF162. Depletion and inhibition of anti-V3 antibodies in the plasma of five patients with high titers of anti-V3 antibodies led to modest change in the neutralization percentage against two PIs (range 0-21%). The plasma of antiretroviral-treated patients exhibited higher neutralization potential than that of the drug-naïve plasmas against the four PIs tested which was further evidenced by a follow-up study.

We exploit the versatility provided by metal-dielectric composites to demonstrate controllable coherent perfect absorption (CPA) or anti-lasing in a slab of heterogeneous medium. The slab is illuminated by coherent light from both sides, at the same angle of incidence and the conditions required for CPA are investigated as a function of the different system parameters. Our calculations clearly elucidate the role of absorption as a necessary prerequisite for CPA. We further demonstrate the controllability of the CPA frequency to the extent of having the same at two distinct frequencies even in presence of dispersion, rendering the realization of anti-lasers more flexible.

This article reports a convenient supramolecular strategy to construct fluorescent photoswitchable molecular assemblies between a macrocyclic host, cucurbit[8]uril (CB8), and a fluorogenic dye, thiazole orange (TO). The interaction mechanism and the stable stoichiometric host-guest arrangements have been claimed on the basis of the optical absorption, steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence lifetime and anisotropy measurements, and also the geometry optimization studies. The CB8 recognized TO in its 2:2 stoichiometry exhibited spectacular fluorescence enhancement of the order of 1700 fold, which is the largest directly determined value so far reported for a dye in an organic macrocyclic system. This prospective 2CB8:2TO assembly responded to selected chemical stimuli such as metal ions, adamantylamine, and tryptophan, providing different dissociation mechanisms and demonstrating a controlled exchange and release action desired with such noncovalently linked assemblies. Positively, considering the aqueous solubility and biocompatibility of the host-guest constituents, this methodology can evolve into a general approach to deliver and operate intracellularly functional molecular components under chemical/thermal/optical trigger control, especially for therapeutic applications.

In the present work we report, for the first time, a novel difference in the molecular mechanism of the activation step of aminoacylation reaction between the class I and class II aminoacyl tRNA synthetases (aaRSs). The observed difference is in the mode of nucleophilic attack by the oxygen atom of the carboxylic group of the substrate amino acid (AA) to the αP atom of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The syn oxygen atom of the carboxylic group attacks the α-phosphorous atom (αP) of ATP in all class I aaRSs (except TrpRS) investigated, while the anti oxygen atom attacks in the case of class II aaRSs. The class I aaRSs investigated are GluRS, GlnRS, TyrRS, TrpRS, LeuRS, ValRS, IleRS, CysRS, and MetRS and class II aaRSs investigated are HisRS, LysRS, ProRS, AspRS, AsnRS, AlaRS, GlyRS, PheRS, and ThrRS. The variation of the electron density at bond critical points as a function of the conformation of the attacking oxygen atom measured by the dihedral angle ψ (C(α)-C') conclusively proves this. The result shows that the strength of the interaction of syn oxygen and αP is stronger than the interaction with the anti oxygen for class I aaRSs. This indicates that the syn oxygen is the most probable candidate for the nucleophilic attack in class I aaRSs. The result is further supported by the computation of the variation of the nonbonded interaction energies between αP atom and anti oxygen as well as syn oxygen in class I and II aaRSs, respectively. The difference in mechanism is explained based on the analysis of the electrostatic potential of the AA and ATP which shows that the relative arrangement of the ATP with respect to the AA is opposite in class I and class II aaRSs, which is correlated with the organization of the active site in respective aaRSs. A comparative study of the reaction mechanisms of the activation step in a class I aaRS (Glutaminyl tRNA synthetase) and in a class II aaRS (Histidyl tRNA synthetase) is carried out by the transition state analysis. The atoms in molecule analysis of the interaction between active site residues or ions and substrates are carried out in the reactant state and the transition state. The result shows that the observed novel difference in the mechanism is correlated with the organizations of the active sites of the respective aaRSs. The result has implication in understanding the experimentally observed different modes of tRNA binding in the two classes of aaRSs.

The giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, is an economically important species. It is a euryhaline shrimp, surviving in wide-range salinity conditions. A change in gene expression has been suggested as an important component for stress management. To better understand the osmoregulatory mechanisms mediated by the gill, a subtractive and suppressive hybridization (SSH) tool was used to identify expressed transcripts linked to adaptations in saline water. A total of 117 transcripts represented potentially expressed under salinity conditions. BLAST analysis identified 22% as known genes, 9% as uncharacterized showing homologous to unannotated ESTs, and 69% as unknown sequences. All the identified known genes representing broad spectrum of biological pathways were particularly linked to stress tolerance including salinity tolerance. Expression analysis of 10 known genes and 7 unknown/uncharacterized genes suggested their upregulation in the gills of prawn exposed to saline water as compared to control indicating that these are likely to be associated with salinity acclimation. Rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) was used for obtaining full-length cDNA of MRSW-40 clone that was highly upregulated during salt exposure. The sequenced ESTs presented here will have potential implications for future understanding about salinity acclimation and/or tolerance of the prawn.

Autoimmune polyglandular syndromes (APS) comprise a wide clinical spectrum of autoimmune disorders. APS is divided into Type I, Type II, Type I and Type IV depending upon the pattern of disease combination. Ghronic diarrhoea is one of the many manifestations of APS and many aetiological factors have been suggested for it. Apart from the established aetiological factors, intestinal lymphangiectasia may be responsible for chronic diarrhea in some cases.Intestinal lymphangiectasia has been reported in Type I APS. We report a case of Type III APS with hypocalcaemia and hypothyroidism who had chronic diarrhea of long duration and was finally diagnosed to have intestinal lymphangiectasia.

The aggregation behavior of the DNA marker dye thiazole orange (TO), has been investigated in two types of surfactant assemblies, namely, premicelles/micelles of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and pre reverse micelles/reverse micelles of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT). In the case of an SDS/water system, absorption spectral changes of TO signify the formation of H-aggregates and H-dimers of the dye at premicellar concentrations, which subsequently convert to the monomeric form beyond the critical micellar concentration (cmc). Interestingly, the observed changes in the absorption and emission characteristics due to the surfactant-induced formation of H-aggregates/dimers of TO are found to be useful to estimate the surfactant concentration parameters for premicellar aggregation of SDS. In the case of an AOT/n-heptane system, similarly, H-aggregates/dimers are observed at low AOT concentrations, below the cmc. However, in this case, the H-dimers persist even beyond the cmc. This is attributed to the strong tendency of TO for self-aggregation and its favorable electrostatic interactions with the AOT head groups. With increasing water content in the AOT reverse micelles, the hydration of the dye leads to the conversion of H-dimers to the monomeric form. The steady-state fluorescence results are nicely corroborated with those from time-resolved fluorescence studies and demonstrate the interesting behavior of the surfactant-induced aggregation of TO dye., (© 2011 American Chemical Society)

The relation between the conservation of active site residues and the molecular mechanism of aminoacylation reaction is an unexplored problem. In the present paper, the influences of the conserved active site residues on the reaction mechanism as well as the electrostatic potential near the reaction center are analyzed for Histidyl tRNA synthetase from Escherichia coli, Thermus thermophilus and Staphylococcus aureus. While the primary structures show both convergence as well as divergence, the secondary level structures of the active sites of the three species show considerable conservation in the respective structural organizations. The conserved active site residues near the reaction center, which have a major role in the reaction mechanism and catalysis, retain their specific position and orientation relative to the substrate in the three species. In order to understand the influence of different conserved and nonconserved residues near the reaction center, two different models are considered. First, a large model of active site with the substrates, Mg(2+) ions and water is constructed in which the first shell residues (including both conserved as well as nonconserved) near the reaction center are studied. From the large model, a smaller model is constructed for reaction path modeling individually for three species. Validation of the smaller model is carried out by comparing the energy surfaces of large and small models as a function of reaction coordinates. Further, the electrostatic potential near the reaction center for the large and small model are compared. The transition state structures of the activation step of aminoacylation reaction for E. coli, T. thermophilus and S. aureus are calculated using the combined ab-initio/semi-empirical calculation. The similarity of the energy profiles as a function of the relevant reaction coordinate and the orientation of the catalytic residue, Arg259, indicate that the reaction mechanisms are identical which are guided by the strikingly similar structural pattern formed by conserved residues for three species. The energy surfaces have close resemblance in three species and present a clear perspective that how the reaction proceeds with the aid of different conserved residues. The study of electrostatic potential confirms this view. A facile supramolecular approach to prepare surface functionalized silver nanoparticle conjugates has been established and their enhanced molecular recognition features have been explored to demonstrate the uptake and stimulus responsive release of a phototherapeutic porphyrin dye, the TMPyP.

Diabetic myonecrosis is an underreported complication of long-standing, poorly controlled diabetes mellitus which is usually self-limiting and responds well to conservative management. Patients frequently have microvascular complications, and although short-term prognosis is good, the long-term prognosis is poor. We report four cases of diabetic myonecrosis admitted in a tertiary care hospital.

From the point of view of biocompatibility of bone analog materials, cell-material interaction is of fundamental importance. In this article, we report the effect of pulse electric field stimulation on cell-material interaction by analyzing cellular functionality and viability. An in-house fabricated pulse electric field setup was used for the application of electric field during cell culture experiments. To optimize voltage/electric field, the first set of exploratory experiments was conducted with varying field strength at fixed frequency, and subsequently, the frequency of the electrical stimulation was varied to study its influence on the proliferation of L929 mouse fibroblast cells on gelatin-coated control disc. Subsequently, L929 cells were cultured on hydroxyapatite (HA) and HA-40 wt % BaTiO₃ composite. Cell-cultured samples were analyzed qualitatively as well as quantitatively using fluorescence microscope and scanning electron microscope. It has been demonstrated that due to the application of electric field during the cell culture experiment, the cell proliferation and the cell spreading on the surface of the biomaterials were enhanced within a narrow window of voltage/frequency of electrical stimulation. At lower field intensities, the energy density is quite low and increases parabolically with field strength. There is no significant increase in the temperature (ΔT ~10⁻⁵ K) of the medium due to the application of short duration pulse electric field. Chiral interfaces and molecular recognition phenomena are of special interest not only for the understanding of biological recognition processes but also for the potential application in material science. Langmuir monolayers at the air-water interface have successfully been used as simple models to mimic biological phenomena. Recent experimental studies revealed that both chirality and molecular recognition processes of amphiphiles are controlling the features of the nano-aggregates at the air/water interface. The objective of experimental studies has been to gain information about the properties of mesoscopic length scale aggregates obtained on the basis of chiral discrimation effects and the formation of supramolecular entities by molecular recognition of non-surface active species dissolved in the aqueous subphase. Differences in the two-dimensional morphology and lattice structures of the nano-aggregates cannot be explained by macroscopic theories and needed information about the detailed orientation and distance dependence of the intermolecular interaction within the aggregates. First new bottom-up studies have been directed toward understanding the driving forces for the aggregation processes of monolayers. Different types of interactions have been successfully considered using semi-empirical quantum chemical methods. The possibilities of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) patterning to be an alternative paradigm for large-area patterning with mesostructured features are discussed.

Background: Cognitive development of children depends on nutritional and socioeconomic factors., Objectives: The objectives of the present study were to assess the cognitive development and to investigate the relationship of nutritional and socioeconomic status (SES) to cognitive development in 5-12 year old Santal children of Purulia district of West Bengal, India., Methods: The nutritional status of each child was assessed by z-score of height-for-age, weight-for-height and weight-for-age parameters. SES was measured using the updated Kuppusswami scale. Cognitive development was measured by Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices (RCPM)., Results: The growth curve of RCPM scores of Santal children remained around the 5(th) percentile values of British children. The RCPM scores of the adequately nourished children and upper-lower SES were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than the children with lower SES and nutritional status. About 42.96% and 27.69% of Santal children were found to be in the intellectually deficient and below average groups, respectively. RCPM scores of Santal children were significantly correlated with nutritional status and socioeconomic factors (p < 0.01)., Conclusion: The surveyed children showed poor cognitive functions. The vulnerable nutritional and socioeconomic statuses of Santal children are the major causes for their poor cognitive development.

Introduction: Patients of lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) having an ASA status III or more are likely to be further downgraded by surgery to critical levels of pulmonary function., Aim: To compare the efficacy of thoracic epidural block with (0.125%) bupivacaine, fentanyl combination and (0.125%) bupivacaine, fentanyl combination with adjunctive intravenous magnesium infusion for the relief of postoperative pain in patients undergoing LVRS., Methods: Patients were operated under general anesthesia. Thirty minutes before the anticipated completion of skin closure in both groups, (Group A and Group B) 7 ml of (0.125%) bupivacaine calculated as 1.5 ml/thoracic segment space for achieving analgesia in dermatomes of T4, T5, T6, T7, and T8 segments, along with fentanyl 50 μg (0.5 ml), was administered through the catheter, activating the epidural block, and the time was noted. Thereafter, in patients of Group A, magnesium sulfate injection 30 mg/kg i.v. bolus was followed by infusion of magnesium sulfate at 10 mg/kg/hr and continued up to 24 hours. Group B was treated as control., Results and Analysis: A significant increase in the mean and maximum duration of analgesia in Group A in comparison with Group B (P<0.05) was observed. Total epidural dose of fentanyl and bupivacaine required in Group A was significantly lower in comparison with Group B in 24 hours., Discussion: Requirement of total doses of local anesthetics along with opioids could be minimized by magnesium infusion; therefore, the further downgradation of patients of LVRS may be prevented., Conclusion: Intravenous magnesium can prolong opioid-induced analgesia while minimizing nausea, pruritus, and somnolence.

Background: Post-operative cognitive dysfunction is the subtle cerebral complication temporally seen following surgery. The aim of this study was to compare the influence of either general anesthesia (GA) or epidural anesthesia (EA) on the early post-operative neurocognitive outcome in elderly (>59 years) subjects undergoing hip and knee surgery., Methods: A total of 60 patients were recruited in a prospective, randomized, parallel-group study, comparable by age and sex. They were enrolled and randomized to receive either EA (n = 30) or GA (n = 30). All of them were screened using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), with components of the Kolkata Cognitive Screening Battery. The operated patients were re-evaluated 1 week after surgery using the same scale. The data collected were analyzed to assess statistical significance., Results: We observed no statistical difference in cognitive behavior in either group pre-operatively, which were comparable with respect to age, sex and type of surgery. Grossly, a significant difference was seen between the two groups with respect to the perioperative changes in verbal fluency for categories and MMSE scores. However, these differences were not significant after the application of the Bonferroni correction for multiple analyses, except the significant differences observed only in the MMSE scores., Conclusions: We observed a difference in cognitive outcome with GA compared with EA. Certain aspects of the cognition were affected to a greater extent in this group of patients undergoing hip and knee surgery.

Background: To avert nausea and vomiting the 5-Hydroxytryptamine3 (5-HT3) antagonists have become the first line of treatment ifassociated with cardiovascular effects andappear to cause QT prolongation., Objective: Evaluate the effect of 1 mg, 4 mg, and 8 mg bolus doses of intravenous Ondansetron, relative to placebo, in prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and to find out the changes of QT interval corrected for heart rate (QTc)., Materials and Methods: This prospective randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study was carried out among 136 adult participants of both sexes in a tertiary care postgraduate teaching institute at Kolkata. mg, 4 mg or 8 mg inj. Ondansetron was diluted to 10 ml with normal saline, was infused 30 min before extubation in relation with a control group. Time to first rescue antiemetic medication and in QTc interval at different time intervals, in each group was noted in different in the various surgical operation theaters (OTs)., Results: Requirement of the first rescue antiemetic in the postoperative period between 60 to 120 min in the mg, 4 mg or 8 mg Ondansetron groups was in 28%, 24% and 7% participants respectively; between 120 to 240 min in 63%, 72% and 57% respectively; and within 360 min in 9%, 4% and 36% respectively. Significant and maximal QTc prolongation was observed in the participants with mg or 8 mg Ondansetron 3 and 5 min of drug administration., Conclusions: One mg Ondansetron in healthy adult participants can effectively prevent PONV causing no or insignificant prolongation of QTc interval.

Aims: The aim of this study was to characterize the motor development of 5-12 year-old Santal children of the Purulia district of West Bengal, India. The effect of socioeconomic and nutritional status on motor development was also examined., Study Design: 841 (427 boys and 414 girls) Santal children were examined in this cross-sectional study. The nutritional status of each child was assessed by height-for-age z-score based on WHO reference data. Socioeconomic status (SES) was measured by the updated Kuppusswami scale. Motor development was measured using the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency-Second Edition, Short Form (BOT-2)., Results: Sex had a significant (p<0.05) effect on children's score of running speed and agility, upper-limb coordination and strength with higher scores for boys than girls. Children with a height-for-age z-score of -2 or less were significantly more likely to have a total BOT-2 z-score of -2 or less compared with children at a healthier height-for-age range (Χ(2)=271.136, p<0.0001). Well-nourished children scored significantly higher (p<0.05) than undernourished children in total BOT-2 score and in all individual motor subtests. Regression analysis showed that nutritional status, socioeconomic status and height have a significant impact on total BOT-2 score (p<0.001). Age and sex were found to be influencing factors in motor development., Conclusion: Santal children's motor proficiency is around the 1st percentile when compared with normative BOT-2 data. This may be, in part, a result of nutritional and economic disparities between children on who the BOT-2 was normed and Santal children, supporting the role of nutrition in motor development. Additionally, Santal children with lower SES and poorer nutritional status have lower motor proficiency compared with Santal children with comparatively higher SES and nutritional status., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Rapid right ventricular pacing is safe, effective, and established method to provide balloon stability during balloon aortic valvuloplasty (BAV). Controlled transient respiratory arrest at this point of time may further reduce left ventricular stroke volume, providing an additional benefit to maintain balloon stability. Two groups were studied. Among the 10 patients, five had rapid pacing alone (Group A), while the other five were provided with cessation of positive pressure breathing as well (Group B). The outcomes of BAV in the two groups of patients were studied. One patient in Group A had failed balloon dilatation even after the fourth attempt, while in Group B there were no failures. The peak systolic gradient reduction was higher in Group B (70.05% in comparison to 52.16% of group A). In Group A, five subjects developed aortic regurgitation (grade 2 in four and grade 3 in one, while no grade 3 aortic regurgitation developed in any patient in Group B). Controlled transient respiratory arrest along with rapid ventricular pacing may be effective in maintaining balloon stability and improve the outcome of BAV.

The promyelocytic leukemia zinc finger (Plzf) gene containing an evolutionary conserved BTB (bric-a-brac/tramtrack/broad complex) domain plays a key role in self-renewal of mammalian spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) via recruiting transcriptional co-repressors. Little is known about the function of Plzf in vertebrate, especially in fish species. To gain better understanding of its role in fishes, we have cloned Plzf from the testis of Labeo rohita (rohu), a commercially important freshwater carp. The full-length cDNA contains an open reading frame (ORF) of 2004bp translatable to 667 amino acids (aa) containing a conserved N-terminal BTB domain and C-terminal C(2)H(2)-zinc finger motifs. L. rohita Plzf, which is phylogenetically related to Danio rerio counterpart, abundantly expressed in spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs). A three-dimensional (3D) model of BTB domain of Plzf protein was constructed by homology modeling approach. Molecular docking on this 3D structure established a homo-dimer between two BTB domains creating a charged pocket containing conserved aa residues: L33, C34, D35 and R49. Thus, Plzf of SSC is structurally and possibly functionally conserved. The conserved aa residues in the cleft resulting from Plzf BTB self-association are likely to be the binding platform for interaction with recruited co-repressor peptides. Interactions among macrocyclic hosts and dyes/drugs have been explored extensively for their direct usage in controlled uptake and release of large number of potential drug molecules. In this paper we report the non-covalent interaction of cucurbit[8]uril macrocycle (CB8) with a biologically important dye, neutral red, by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. A comparative analysis with the complexation behaviour of the dye with CB7, the lower homologue of CB8, indicates contrasting guest binding behaviour with significant changes in the photophysical characteristics of the dye. While CB7 interaction leads to a 1 ratio 1 stoichiometry resulting in approximately 6 fold enhancement in the fluorescence emission of the dye, CB8 displays signatures for a 1 ratio 2 host-guest stoichiometry with drastic reduction in the fluorescence emission. Apart from the evaluation of approximately 2 unit shift in the protolytic equilibrium on complexation (pK(a) shift), the measurements with tryptophan established a selective guest exchange to favour a co-localized dimer inside the CB8 cavity. In a protein medium (BSA), the 1 ratio 2 complex was converted to a 1 ratio 1 ratio 1 CB8-NRH(+)-BSA complex. The finding that NRH(+) can be transferred from CB8 to BSA, even though the binding constant for NRH(+)-CB8 is much higher than NRH(+)-BSA, is projected for a controlled slow release of NRH(+) towards BSA. Since the release and activity of drugs can be controlled by regulating the protolytic equilibrium, the macromolecular encapsulation and release of NRH(+) demonstrated here provide information relevant to host-guest based drug delivery systems and its applications.

Background: Acute postoperative pain can cause detrimental effects on multiple organ systems, leading to chronic pain syndromes., Objective: To compare thoracic epidural block (TEB) and paravertebral block (PVB) for relief of postoperative pain in adult patients undergoing thoracotomy., Materials and Methods: In this randomized, single-blinded, prospective study, 60 adult patients of both sexes, belonging to ASA physical status I and II, were scheduled for elective thoracotomy under general anesthesia. They were randomly divided into two groups, A and B of 30 each, who were comparable in terms of demographic parameters and body weight. Group A received TEB and Group B received PVB. All the patients underwent thoracotomy under general anesthesia using a uniform standard anesthetic technique. Thirty minutes before the anticipated end of skin suture, blocks were activated in both the groups with 7.5 ml for TEB and 15 ml for thoracic PVB of 0.25% bupivacaine, along with 1 ml of fentanyl for postoperative analgesia., Results: Patients receiving PVB for postoperative analgesia experienced better analgesia than those receiving TEB from the immediate postoperative period that lasted longer. Intragroup comparison showed that in the cases receiving TEB, there was a significant statistical difference in preoperative and postoperative values with regard to the mean systolic blood pressure (SBP), mean arterial pressure and mean pulse rate. However, in patients receiving PVB, significant difference in preoperative and postoperative values was seen in mean SBP only., Conclusions: We observed longer duration of analgesia with PVB compared to TEB.

Modulation in the photophysical properties and intramolecular electron transfer behavior of the flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) molecule has been investigated in the presence of the macrocyclic hosts, alpha-, beta- and gamma-cyclodextrins (CDs), using absorption and steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence measurements. The results demonstrate that only the beta-CD host has a suitable cavity dimension to form a weak inclusion complex with FAD by encapsulating the adenine moiety, which is the preferred binding site in the large FAD molecule. Interestingly, in spite of the weak binding interaction, a significant enhancement in the fluorescence intensity of FAD is observed on complexation with beta-CD, and this has been attributed mainly to the modulation in the conformational dynamics of FAD in the presence of beta-CD. In aqueous solutions, a good fraction of FAD molecules exist in a "closed" conformation with the adenine and isoalloxazine rings stacked on each other, thus leading to very efficient fluorescence quenching due to the ultrafast intramolecular electron transfer from adenine to the isoalloxazine moiety. Complex formation with beta-CD inhibits this intramolecular electron transfer by changing the "closed" conformation of FAD to the "open" form, wherein the adenine and isoalloxazine moieties are widely separated, thus prohibiting the fluorescence quenching process. Further evidence for the conformational changes has been obtained by the observation of a long lifetime component in the fluorescence decay of FAD in the presence of beta-CD, which corresponds to the decay of the unquenched "open" form of FAD. Fluorescence up-conversion studies also indicate the absence of any ultrafast component in the fluorescence decay arising from the complexed FAD, thus supporting the formation of the "open" form in the presence of beta-CD, with no intramolecular electron transfer.

Aminoacylation is a vital step of natural biosynthesis of peptide. Correct aminoacylation is a necessary prerequisite for the elimination of noncognate amino acids such as D-amino acids. In the present work, we studied the fidelity mechanism of histidine (His) activation (first step of aminoacylation reaction) using a combined quantum mechanical/semiempirical method based on a model of crystal structure of the oligomeric complex of histidyl-tRNA synthetase (HisRS) from Escherichia coli. The study of the variation in the energy during the mutual approach of the His and ATP to form adenylate shows that the surrounding nanospace of synthetase confines the reactants (L-His and ATP) and proximally places in a geometry suitable for the in-line nucleophilic attack. The significantly higher energy of the energy surface of the model containing D-His is due to unfavorable interaction of D-His with ATP and surrounding residues. This indicates that the network of interaction (principally electrostatic) is highly unfavorable when D-amino acid is incorporated. The reorganization of the surrounding nanospace can lower the unfavorable nature of the intermolecular energy surface of D-His and surrounding residues. However, such a rearrangement requires large-scale structural reorganization of the synthetase structure and is unfavorable. The variation in the bond angles and distances in going from the reactant state to the product state via transition state confirms the mechanism of nucleophilic attack and concomitant inversion of oxygen atoms around alpha-phosphorus (alpha-P). Calculation of the electrostatic potential indicates that in addition to the Mg(2+) the Arg residues in the active site facilitate the nucleophilic attack by reducing the negative charge distributed over the oxygen atoms attached to the alpha-P of ATP. Arg 259 residue has a role similar to that played by the two Mg(2+) cations as this residue is in close proximity of the alpha-P of ATP. Arg 113 also facilitates the reduction of the negative charge on the other side of the reaction center. The favorable electrostatic interaction of the Arg 259 with ATP and His is also concluded from the calculation of the binding energy. The Arg 259 anchors the carboxylic acid group of His and the oxygen atom of the alpha-phosphate group during the progress of reaction. Consequently, Arg 259 plays an important catalytic role in the activation step rather than merely reducing the negative charge density over the ATP.

We report an intriguing noncovalent interaction of thioflavin T (ThT), a fibril diagnostic dye, with the versatile macrocyclic host molecule cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) in the presence of metal cations. ThT forms both 1:1 (CB7.ThT) and 2:1 [(CB7)(2).ThT] complexes with CB7 host, leading to specific structural arrangements. Addition of competitive guests like metal cations to the 1:1 stoichiometric complex displays expected competitive binding interactions with CB7, leading to decreased fluorescence intensity from ThT. However, addition of metal ions to the 2:1 complex leads to unusual enhancement in the fluorescence emission ( approximately 270-fold in the presence of Ca(2+) and approximately 160-fold in the presence of Na(+)). These contrasting observations on the fluorescence enhancement with change in the stoichiometric equilibrium have been investigated explicitly for a feasible binding model. Detailed photophysical characterization with supporting data from NMR and anisotropy measurements has led to the revelation of a novel stimulus-responsive cooperative metal ion binding to the stoichiometrically selected (CB7)(2).ThT complex, demonstrating a highly fluorescent supramolecular nanocapsule. The first example of a noncovalently packed fluorescent complex became feasible due to the structural arrangement of the host-guest complex in the 2:1 stoichiometry with two CB7 portals providing strong negative charge density for the metal ions to group and seal the complex, thus protecting the incorporated dye. To further strengthen the usefulness of the supramolecular capsule established here, rupture of the capsular complex has been demonstrated with a strong competitive guest, 1-amantadine hydrochloride, which helped in disrupting the capsule to release the dye. It is proposed here that by judicious design of the chromophore (guest) structure, such capsular assemblies can be explored for the binding and release of drug molecules, for fluorescence on-off systems, and as building blocks for molecular architectures displaying unique properties.

A tendency for magnesium deficiency in patients with diabetes mellitus is well established. Hypomagnesemia is commonly associated with hypokalemia and hypocalcemia. Here, we report a case of a 55 yr old woman with diabetes mellitus, presenting with acute onset quadriparesis, paresthesia and muscle cramps, associated with hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia and hypocalcemia, with total recovery on correction of electrolytes for which no other secondary cause could be ascertained.

Enhancement of efficiency and efficacy of plant regeneration are primary goals of micropropagation. An efficient method with rapid and improved shoot regeneration of gladiolus based upon matrix supported liquid culture technique has been demonstrated. This technique in addition ensured the quality of the regenerated shoots by effectively alleviating the phenomenon of hyperhydricity. Efficacy in plant regeneration can be brought about by the ability to sort and objectively select plants or group of plants with a desired feature. A reliable, noninvasive, machine vision-neural network based sorting method for clustering photometric variants of regenerated shoots of gladiolus has also been described.

Aminoacylation is a vital step in natural biosynthesis process of peptide and is the key step in correlating the realm of protein with the RNA world. Incorrect aminoacylation might lead to misacylation of d-amino acid in the tRNA which might cause synthesis of a hetero-peptide rather than natural homopeptide leading to the altered functionality of the peptide. However, the accuracy of this process is remarkable and leads to the attachment of the correct enantiomer of the amino acid with their cognate tRNA. Thus, the chiral discrimination is stringent. In the present work, we presented a combined ONIOM (ab initio/semi-empirical) study of the chiral discrimination in the first step of aminoacylation reaction based on a model of crystal structure of the oligomeric complex of histidyl-tRNA synthetase (HisRS) from Escherichia coli complexed with ATP and histidinol and histidyl-adenylate. The study reveals that the molecular mechanism of the chiral discrimination involves the amino acid, ATP as well as surrounding residues of the synthetase. Several factors are noted to be responsible for discrimination and explain the high level of stereospecificity of the process. The chirality of the amino acid of the substrate and its (principally) electrostatic interaction with the ATP is important for discrimination. The distance and orientational changes involved in the approach of the d-His towards the ATP is energetically unfavorable. The charge distributions on the His and ATP are important for the discrimination. Removal of the charges in the model drastically reduces the discrimination. Restricted nature of the mutual orientation within the cavity of the active site where the His and ATP are located during the change in orientation for the approach to form the adenylate makes the resultant interaction profile as different for l-His and d-His also influences chiral discrimination. The analysis of the transition state structure revealed that alteration of the chirality of the His destabilize the transition state by removing the favorable electrostatic interaction between the Glu-83 and NH(3)(+) group of the His substrate. The proximity of the surrounding residues as present in the active site of the synthetase with the His and ATP (the separation is of nanometer range) has influence of discrimination. The study provides a molecular mechanism of the retention of biological homochirality.

The aims of the present study were to determine the body composition and to assess the nutritional status on the basis of body composition parameters in Nepalese children. Body fat percentage (BF%), fat mass (FM), and fat-free mass (FFM) of 1,988 (1,016 boys and 972 girls) Nepalese children aged 6 to 10 years were calculated from triceps and subscapular skinfolds. FM and FFM were then divided by height-squared in meter to determine the fat mass index (FMI) and fat-free mass index (FFMI), respectively. Growth curves of BF% and FFM for Nepalese children remained at a low level compared to international data. BF%, FM, and FMI of Nepalese girls were significantly (p < 0.001) higher than Nepalese boys, whereas FFM and FFMI of Nepalese boys were significantly (p < 0.001) higher than Nepalese girls of all age groups. BF%, FM, and FFM were significantly correlated with almost all anthropometric parameters in both sexes. Growth curves of BF% and FFM showed that the undernutrition prevailed in Nepalese children. BF% and FFM were good indicators for measuring nutritional status in Nepalese children. Sexual dimorphism of fat patterning was present in Nepalese children.

The highly co-evolved relationship of parasites and their hosts appears to include modulation of host immune signals, although the molecular mechanisms involved in the host-parasite interplay remain poorly understood. Characterization of these key genes and their cognate proteins related to the host-parasite interplay should lead to a better understanding of this intriguing biological phenomenon. The malaria agent Plasmodium falciparum is predicted to export a cohort of several hundred proteins to remodel the host erythrocyte. However, proteins actively exported by the asexual intracellular parasite beyond the host red blood cell membrane (before merozoite egress) have been poorly investigated so far. Here we used two complementary methodologies, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis/MS and LC-MS/MS, to examine the extracellular secreted antigens at asexual blood stages of P. falciparum. We identified 27 novel antigens exported by P. falciparum in the culture medium of which some showed clustering with highly polymorphic genes on chromosomes, suggesting that they may encode putative antigenic determinants of the parasite. Immunolocalization of four novel secreted proteins confirmed their export beyond the infected red blood cell membrane. Of these, preliminary functional characterization of two novel (Sel1 repeat-containing) parasite proteins, PfSEL1 and PfSEL2 revealed that they down-regulate expression of cell surface Notch signaling molecules in host cells. Also a novel protein kinase (PfEK) and a novel protein phosphatase (PfEP) were found to, respectively, phosphorylate/dephosphorylate parasite-specific proteins in the extracellular culture supernatant. Our study thus sheds new light on malaria parasite extracellular secreted antigens of which some may be essential for parasite development and could constitute promising new drug targets.

The prototropic behavior of the dye, 7-hydroxy-4-methylcoumarin (7H4MC), has been studied in cationic benzyldimethylhexadecylammonium chloride (BDHC) and nonionic poly(oxyethylene)(tetramethylbutyl)phenyl ether (TritonX-100, TX-100) reverse micelles using ground-state absorption and steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence measurements. The results have been compared with the previous results in the anionic sodium 1,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) reverse micelles. Although the probe dye, 7H4MC, is indicated to reside in the interfacial region in all of the reverse micelles studied, significant differences have been observed in the evolution of the different prototropic species. In BDHC reverse micelles, the anionic form is favored over the tautomeric form at the higher w0 values, which is contrary to the observation in AOT reverse micelles where both of these forms are almost equally produced. The higher propensity for the formation of the anionic form in BDHC reverse micelles has been explained on the basis of the additional electrostatic stabilization of the anionic species in the cationic BDHC reverse micelles compared to that in the anionic AOT reverse micelles. On the other hand, in TX-100 reverse micelles, the anionic form is not very evident, but interestingly, the tautomer form begins to appear beyond w0=2. The appearance of the tautomeric species apparently coincides with the formation of the water pool in the TX-100 reverse micelles. However, due to the more restricted nature of the water molecules within this reverse micelle (mostly dispersed around the oxyethylene chains), deprotonation of the 7H4MC dye and the consequential stabilization of the anionic form are considerably reduced. The results clearly reveal that the aqueous environment in the vicinity of the probe is quite different for the reverse micelles considered, and these differences largely modulate the prototropic processes of the excited dye.

Summary: Hypomagnesaemia is a common complication after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and predisposes to the development of cardiac arrhythmias. Previous studies showed that intravenous magnesium reduces the incidence of postoperative cardiac arrhythmias but it also inhibits platelet function. Our aim was to compare the postoperative blood loss in patients not receiving magnesium after CPB with the group who received magnesium and to compare the requirement of blood, fresh frozen plasma (FFP) and platelets within 24 hours after surgery. This prospective randomized controlled study was conducted in 80 adult patients on oral aspirin undergoing elective CABG requiring CPB. Group A patients had not received magnesium infusion after recovery from CPB. Group B patients received magnesium infusion after recovery from CPB. Postoperative bleeding was assessed in both the groups. All the data were statistically analyzed. There was a insignificant increase in 24 hours postoperative drainage in magnesium recipient group compared to control group (p>0.05). Requirements of blood and blood products to maintain haematocrit and coagulation profile revealed insignificant (p > 0.05). Increase in requirement of PRC, FFP and platelets in magnesium recipient patients than the control group. Incidence of atrial fibrillation (Gr A 2.5%, Gr B 2.5%) and atrial extrasystoles (Gr A 2.5%, Gr B 10%) revealed comparable (p > 0.05) between the groups, but incidence of ventricular arrhythmias were significantly (p<0.05) high in the patients of Gr A(17.5%) than Gr B(5%). To conclude, magnesium may be administered to patients who continue pre-operative aspirin to undergo on-pump CABG surgery.

The recent discovery of HIV-1 genome-encoded novel microRNA (miRNA; designated as hiv1-mir-H1) having ability to target selectively and specifically human cellular AATF gene, prompted us to explore the role of this miRNA in the regulation of genes involved in cellular apoptosis, proliferation and nucleic acid-based immune mechanism governed by miRNAs. Such a study revealed that this miRNA-induced knockdown of AATF gene, within normal human blood mononuclear cells, was responsible for the suppression of genes coding for Bcl-2, c-myc, Par-4 and Dicer. Further, hiv1-mir-H1 had the capacity to downregulate expression of cellular miR149 gene recognized to target Vpr gene encoded by HIV-1. Based upon these findings, we propose an "Epigenomic Pathway" through which hiv1-mir-H1 induced AATF gene knockdown within human mononuclear cells initiates their apoptosis.

On or off? A new excimer band at lambda = 570 nm was visualized during the noncovalent host-guest interaction between thioflavin T (ThT) and cucurbit[8]uril (CB8). Controlled dissociation of this assembly in the presence of Ca(2+) was demonstrated as an on/off fluorescence switch (see picture).

Aims: The purpose of this study is to determine the growth pattern of upper arm muscle area (UAMA), upper arm fat area (UAFA) and upper arm muscle area by height (UAMAH) and assessment of magnitude of undernutrition on the basis of these parameters in Santal children., Methods: UAMA and UAFA of 890 (473 boys and 417 girls) Santal children aged 5-12 years were calculated from mid-upper arm circumference and triceps skinfold., Results: Growth curves of UAFA-for-age and UAMA by height in Santal boys and girls are placed at lower level of reference curve indicating severe undernutrition. The growth curves of UAMA-for-age in Santal children of both sexes do not indicate severe undernutrition. 17.13% Santal boys and 20.63% girls were truly undernourished on the basis of three Z-scores of height-for-age, weight-for-height and UAMAH of each subject. Santal children have more UAMA and less UAFA compared to similar undernourished children of Sugalis., Conclusion: Growth curves of UAFA-for-age and UAMA by height are good indicators of nutritional status in Santal children. UAMA and UAFA may not be similarly affected in undernourished children of every community. A comprehensive approach to identify the truly undernourished child has been suggested from this study.

The interaction of 1,4-dihydroxy-9,10-anthraquinone, (quinizarin; QZ), with alpha-, beta- and gamma-cyclodextrin (CD) hosts, has been investigated using absorption, and steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence measurements, in order to understand the effects of cavity size of CDs on the binding of QZ molecule and the changes in the photophysical properties of QZ in the microenvironment of the hosts. The results demonstrate that QZ forms inclusion complexes with all the CDs. The low binding constants as well as the thermodynamic parameters indicate that the mode of interaction between QZ and CDs is mainly hydrophobic in nature. The relative magnitudes of the binding constants and the differential enhancements in the fluorescence intensity of QZ upon complexation with the CDs can be explained by considering the relative dimensions of the host cavity and the guest molecule, as well as the orientation of the guest molecule inside the CD cavity. It is proposed that the unsubstituted benzene ring of QZ is encapsulated within alpha- and beta-CD cavities whereas the dihydroxy-substituted aromatic ring is encapsulated within the gamma-CD cavity. This is further supported by the complexation studies of the QZ.CD systems with Al(III) ions. It is observed that the complexation of QZ with the metal ion is enhanced in the QZ.alpha-CD and QZ.beta-CD systems whereas it is significantly reduced in the QZ.gamma-CD system, due to shielding of the chelating groups of the dye inside the CD cavity in the latter case.

Background: Assessment of nutritional status of children is a very good indicator of socio-economic growth of a community., Objective: The study was carried out to determine the prevalence of undernutrition among the Nepalese children of Kathmandu Valley, the capital of Nepal., Methods: Height and weight of 1988 children aged 6-10 years were measured from randomly selected schools. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated as weight/height(2). Nutritional status was assessed from height-for-age, weight-for-age and BMI-for-age growth curves using WHO reference. Prevalence of undernutrition was determined by Z-scores of height-for-age and weight-for-age using the WHO reference data., Results: Growth curves of height-for-age and weight-for-age was found between 3rd and 15th percentile values, but that of BMI-for-age was placed above the 25th percentile values of WHO reference. Nepalese children of the present study are taller and heavier than children of the Terai region of Nepal. The prevalence of stunting and underweight (below -2 Z-score) was similar in both boys (45.57% stunting and 52.46% underweight) and girls (43.42% stunting and 46.09% underweight)., Conclusions: The present study reveals that a high prevalence of undernutrition exists in Nepalese children, although the magnitude of undernutrition is similar in both boys and girls.

Noncovalent interaction of two water-soluble synthetic macromolecules, Cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4- N-methylpyridyl)porphyrin (TMPyP), has been studied from the viewpoint of organizing them through supramolecular interactions and thereby modulating their functional activities. Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence measurements along with NMR results establish that CB7 crowns the N-methylpyridyl group of the TMPyP in a 1:4 stoichiometry. The overall binding constant was evaluated to be approximately 4.5 x 10 (19) M (-4). The high binding affinity, promoting a stable and extendable molecular assembly in aqueous solution, could open new frontiers in the design and synthesis of higher-order supramolecular structures with photofunctional moieties and project their utility in therapeutic applications.

The excited-state proton transfer and phototautomerization of 7-hydroxy-4-methylcoumarin (7H4MC) dye has been studied in the confined water pools of AOT reverse micelles using steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence measurements. In the "dry" reverse micelles ([water]/[AOT], w(0) = 0), only the neutral form of the dye is present both in the ground and the excited states. At higher w(0) values, three prototropic forms, namely, neutral, anionic, and tautomeric, can be identified in the excited state, although only the neutral form of the dye is present in the ground state. From steady-state fluorescence results and time-resolved area-normalized emission spectra (TRANES), it is indicated that the anionic and tautomeric forms of the dye are the excited-state reaction products and that they arise apparently independently from the excited neutral form of the dye. In bulk water, however, there is no evidence of the tautomeric species and only the anionic form is observed in the excited state. The fluorescence quenching results of the three forms of 7H4MC by the different quenchers, potassium iodide, aniline, and N, N-dimethylaniline, suggest that the distribution of 7H4MC molecules in the reverse micelles is not diverse but that the different prototropic forms arise from the same population of the excited dye in the interfacial region.

Photophysical properties of 2,6-diamino-9,10-anthraquinone (2,6-DAAQ) dye have been investigated in different solvents and solvent mixtures. The fluorescence quantum yields, fluorescence lifetimes, radiative rate constants, nonradiative rate constants and absorption and fluorescence spectral characteristics show unusual deviations in the lower polarity aprotic solvents in comparison to those in other aprotic solvents of medium to higher polarities. The results indicate that the dye exists in different structural forms in the lower and in the medium to higher polarity solvents. Drawing an analogy with the results reported for other amino-substituted dyes, it is inferred that 2,6-DAAQ dye adopts a planar intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) structure in medium to higher polarity solvents, where the amino lone pairs are in good resonance with the anthraquinone pi-cloud. In the lower polarity solvents, however, the dye is inferred to exist in a nonplanar structure where the amino lone pairs are not in good resonance with the anthraquinone pi-cloud. Due to these structural differences, the dye displays significantly different photophysical behavior in the lower polarity solvents than in the other solvents of medium to higher polarities. Supportive evidence for the above structural changes has been obtained from ab initio quantum chemical calculations on the structures of the dye under different conditions. Unusual deviations in the photophysical properties of 2,6-DAAQ dye in protic solvents in comparison to those in aprotic solvents of similar polarities are attributed to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding effect involving the OH groups of the protic solvents and the quinonoid oxygens of the dye.

This study was carried out to determine the prevalence of undernutrition among the Santal children of Puruliya district of West Bengal. 442 Santal children (216 boys and 226 girls) aged 5-12 years were taken from randomly selected schools of Balarampur and Baghmundi areas of Puruliya. Nutritional status was analyzed by Z-score values according to the height for age, weight for age and weight for height reference data of National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). The prevalence of undernutrition among Santal children was as follows: stunting (17.9%), underweight (33.7%) and wasting (29.4%). Severe (below -3 Z-score) stunting, underweight and wasting were found in 4.98%, 7.92% and 9.51% of Santal children, respectively. In girls, prevalence of stunting (21.7%) and wasting (35.8%) was higher in comparison to boys (13.8% stunting and 22.7% wasting).
