BackgroundResidual malaria transmission has been reported in many areas even with adequate indoor vector control coverage, such as long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). The increased insecticide resistance in Anopheles mosquitoes has resulted in reduced efficacy of the widely used indoor tools and has been linked with an increase in outdoor malaria transmission. There are considerations of incorporating outdoor interventions into integrated vector management (IVM) to achieve malaria elimination; however, more information on the combination of tools for effective control is needed to determine their utilization.MethodsA spatial individual-based model was modified to simulate the environment and malaria transmission activities in a hypothetical, isolated African village setting. LLINs and outdoor attractive toxic sugar bait (ATSB) stations were used as examples of indoor and outdoor interventions, respectively. Different interventions and lengths of efficacy periods were tested. Simulations continued for 420 days, and each simulation scenario was repeated 50 times. Mosquito populations, entomologic inoculation rates (EIRs), probabilities of local mosquito extinction, and proportion of time when the annual EIR was reduced below one were compared between different intervention types and efficacy periods.ResultsIn the village setting with clustered houses, the combinational intervention of 50% LLINs plus outdoor ATSBs significantly reduced mosquito population and EIR in short term, increased the probability of local mosquito extinction, and increased the time when annual EIR is less than one per person compared to 50% LLINs alone; outdoor ATSBs alone significantly reduced mosquito population in short term, increased the probability of mosquito extinction, and increased the time when annual EIR is less than one compared to 50% LLINs alone, but there was no significant difference in EIR in short term between 50% LLINs and outdoor ATSBs. In the village setting with dispersed houses, the combinational intervention of 50% LLINs plus outdoor ATSBs significantly reduced mosquito population in short term, increased the probability of mosquito extinction, and increased the time when annual EIR is less than one per person compared to 50% LLINs alone; outdoor ATSBs alone significantly reduced mosquito population in short term, but there were no significant difference in the probability of mosquito extinction and the time when annual EIR is less than one between 50% LLIN and outdoor ATSBs; and there was no significant difference in EIR between all three interventions. A minimum of 2 months of efficacy period is needed to bring out the best possible effect of the vector control tools, and to achieve long-term mosquito reduction, a minimum of 3 months of efficacy period is needed.ConclusionsThe results highlight the value of incorporating outdoor vector control into IVM as a supplement to traditional indoor practices for malaria elimination in Africa, especially in village settings of clustered houses where LLINs alone is far from sufficient.

Abstract Background Artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) was deployed in 2005 as an alternative to chloroquine and is considered the most efficacious treatment currently available for uncomplicated falciparum malaria. While widespread artemisinin resistance has not been reported to date in Africa, recent studies have reported partial resistance in Rwanda. The purpose of this study is to provide a current systematic review and meta-analysis on ACT at Mali study sites, where falciparum malaria is highly endemic. Methods A systematic review of the literature maintained in the bibliographic databases accessible through the PubMed, ScienceDirect and Web of Science search engines was performed to identify research studies on ACT occurring at Mali study sites. Selected studies included trials occurring at Mali study sites with reported polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-corrected adequate clinical and parasite response rates (ACPRcs) at 28 days. Data were stratified by treatment arm (artemether–lumefantrine (AL), the first-line treatment for falciparum malaria in Mali and non-AL arms) and analysed using random-effects, meta-analysis approaches. Results A total of 11 studies met the inclusion criteria, and a risk of bias assessment carried out by two independent reviewers determined low risk of bias among all assessed criteria. The ACPRc for the first-line AL at Mali sites was 99.0% (95% CI (98.3%, 99.8%)), while the ACPRc among non-AL treatment arms was 98.9% (95% CI (98.3%, 99.5%)). The difference in ACPRcs between non-AL treatment arms and AL treatment arms was not statistically significant (p = .752), suggesting that there are potential treatment alternatives beyond the first-line of AL in Mali. Conclusions ACT remains highly efficacious in treating uncomplicated falciparum malaria in Mali. Country-specific meta-analyses on ACT are needed on an ongoing basis for monitoring and evaluating drug efficacy patterns to guide local malaria treatment policies, particularly in the wake of observed artemisinin resistance in Southeast Asia and partial resistance in Rwanda.

In order to fight the spread of the global COVID-19 pandemic, most of the world's countries have taken control measures such as lockdowns during a few weeks to a few months. These lockdowns had significant impacts on economic and personal activities in many countries. Several studies using satellite and surface observations have reported important changes in the spatial and temporal distributions of atmospheric pollutants and greenhouse gases. Global and regional chemistry-transport model studies are being performed in order to analyze the impact of these lockdowns on the distribution of atmospheric compounds. These modeling studies aim at evaluating the impact of the regional lockdowns at the global scale. In order to provide input for the global and regional model simulations, a dataset providing adjustment factors (AFs) that can easily be applied to current global and regional emission inventories has been developed. This dataset provides, for the January–August 2020 period, gridded AFs at a 0.1×0.1 latitude–longitude degree resolution on a daily or monthly basis for the transportation (road, air and ship traffic), power generation, industry and residential sectors. The quantification of AFs is based on activity data collected from different databases and previously published studies. A range of AFs are provided at each grid point for model sensitivity studies. The emission AFs developed in this study are applied to the CAMS global inventory (CAMS-GLOB-ANT_v4.2_R1.1), and the changes in emissions of the main pollutants are discussed for different regions of the world and the first 6 months of 2020. Maximum decreases in the total emissions are found in February in eastern China, with an average reduction of 20 %–30 % in NOx, NMVOCs (non-methane volatile organic compounds) and SO2 relative to the reference emissions. In the other regions, the maximum changes occur in April, with average reductions of 20 %–30 % for NOx, NMVOCs and CO in Europe and North America and larger decreases (30 %–50 %) in South America. In India and African regions, NOx and NMVOC emissions are reduced on average by 15 %–30 %. For the other species, the maximum reductions are generally less than 15 %, except in South America, where large decreases in CO and BC (black carbon) are estimated. As discussed in the paper, reductions vary highly across regions and sectors due to the differences in the duration of the lockdowns before partial or complete recovery. There are very few African regional inventories providing biofuel and fossil fuel emissions. Within the framework of the DACCIWA project, we have developed an African regional anthropogenic emission inventory including the main African polluting sources (wood and charcoal burning, charcoal making, trucks, cars, buses and two-wheeled vehicles, open waste burning, and flaring). To this end, a database on fuel consumption and emission factors specific to Africa was established using the most recent measurements. New spatial proxies (road network, power plant geographical coordinates) were used to convert national emissions into gridded inventories at a 0.1∘ × 0.1∘ spatial resolution. This inventory includes carbonaceous particles (black and organic carbon) and gaseous species (CO, NOx, SO2 and NMVOCs) for the period 1990–2015 with a yearly temporal resolution. We show that all pollutant emissions are globally increasing in Africa during the period 1990–2015 with a growth rate of 95 %, 86 %, 113 %, 112 %, 97 % and 130 % for BC, OC, NOx, CO, SO2 and NMVOCs, respectively. We also show that Western Africa is the highest emitting region of BC, OC, CO and NMVOCs, followed by Eastern Africa, largely due to domestic fire and traffic activities, while Southern Africa and Northern Africa are the highest emitting regions of SO2 and NOx due to industrial and power plant sources. Emissions from this inventory are compared to other regional and global inventories, and the emissions uncertainties are quantified by a Monte Carlo simulation. Finally, this inventory highlights key pollutant emission sectors in which mitigation scenarios should focus on. Abstract Background Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) belongs to the genus Orthonairovirus (Nairovididae) and is a (re)emerging tick-borne pathogen. It is endemic in most parts of Africa, Asia and southern Europe, and can cause severe hemorrhagic symptoms in humans, with high fatality rates (5–30%). Methods Hyalomma ticks were collected from four different livestock herds (cattle and camels) in Mauritania in 2018. The tick species were determined morphologically and confirmed molecularly by using the cytochrome oxidase 1 gene marker. For the detection of CCHFV, ticks were tested individually by one-step multiplex real-time reverse-transcriptase quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The small segment of all positive samples was sequenced to determine the CCHFV genotype. Results In total, 39 of the 1523 ticks (2.56%) collected from 63 cattles and 28 camels tested positive for CCHFV. Three Hyalomma species were identified. Hyalomma rufipes had the largest proportion of positivity (5.67%; 16/282), followed by Hyalomma dromedarii (1.89%; 23/1214). No Hyalomma impeltatum tested positive (0%; 0/21). Positive ticks were found in only six out of 91 host animals. Viral sequence analysis revealed the presence of two different CCHFV lineages (Africa I and Africa III). Conclusions In this study, 2.56% of Hyalomma ticks collected from camels and cattle in Mauritania tested positive for CCHFV. However, the true prevalence of CCHFV in unfed ticks may be lower, as a considerable number of ticks may have been passively infected during blood-feeding by co-feeding ticks or due to viremia of the host. BackgroundAlthough most births in Mali occur in health facilities, a substantial number of newborns still die during delivery and within the first 7 days of life, mainly because of existing training deficiencies and the challenges of maintaining intrapartum and postpartum care skills. ObjectiveThis trial aims to assess the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of an intervention combining clinical audits and low-dose, high-frequency (LDHF) in-service training of health care providers and community health workers to reduce perinatal mortality. MethodsThe study is a three-arm cluster randomized controlled trial in the Koulikoro region in Mali. The units of randomization are each of 84 primary care facilities. Each trial arm will include 28 facilities. The facilities in the first intervention arm will receive support in implementing mortality and morbidity audits, followed by one-day LDHF training biweekly, for 6 months. The health workers in the second intervention arm (28 facilities) will receive a refresher course in maternal neonatal and child health (MNCH) for 10 days in a classroom setting, in addition to mortality and morbidity audits and LDHF hands-on training for 6 months. The control arm, also with 28 facilities, will consist solely of the standard MNCH refresher training delivered in a classroom setting. The main outcomes are perinatal deaths in the intervention arms compared with those in the control arm. A final sample of approximately 600 deliveries per cluster was expected for a total of 30,000 newborns over 14 months. Data sources included both routine health records and follow-up household surveys of all women who recently gave birth in the study facility 7 days postdelivery. Data collection tools will capture perinatal deaths, complications, and adverse events, as well as the status of the newborn during the perinatal period. A full economic evaluation will be conducted to determine the incremental cost-effectiveness of each of the case-based focused LDHF hands-on training strategies in comparison to MNCH refresher training in a classroom setting. ResultsThe trial is complete. The recruitment began on July 15, 2019, and data collection began on July 23, 2019, and was completed in November 2020. Data cleaning or analyses began at the time of submission of the protocol. ConclusionsThe results will provide policy makers and practitioners with crucial information on the impact of different health care provider training modalities on maternal and newborn health outcomes and how to successfully implement these strategies in resource-limited settings. This paper proposed a simplified modeling approach for a power quality (PQ) assessment of Electric Submersible Pumps (ESP) systems supplied by the two-level, the neutral-point-clamped three-level, and the cascaded H-bridge (CHB) multilevel inverter VFD topologies. The VFD switching function models and their analytical expressions are proposed to understand how they can create high-frequency components that might excite the resonance mode in a transmission cable or a rotating shaft system. Voltage, current, and motor airgap torque harmonics induced by each VFD topology in a balanced operation mode are derived and correlated to the PWM carrier and motor operating frequencies. The motor airgap harmonics are calculated based on Concordia’s transformation of voltages and currents in αβ-plan. These harmonic components are represented in the form of Campbell diagrams. An analysis of harmonics under unbalanced conditions was also conducted in a CHB VFD topology-powered ESP system with failed and bypassed cells. The investigated modulation technique is a neutral-shift PWM method that enables the system to operate balanced line-line voltages even if the line-neutral voltages are unbalanced. The effects of modifying the electrical spectrum using the neutral-shift PWM method on electrical and mechanical spectra are analyzed. The results of the Matlab/Simulink-based simulation show that the proposed full ESP system model is highly accurate in both normal and failure modes. The results are consistent with theoretical predictions and are graphically shown in the time and frequency domains for easy analysis. Hybrid experimental–numerical results on a reduced-scale laboratory setup are also discussed to confirm the correctness of the suggested developments.

The effectiveness of activated carbon green-synthesized with silver phosphate (AC-Ag/Ag3PO4) for the removal of Rhodamine B (RhB) dye from simulated wastewater using a UVA-assisted photocatalytic process was investigated. The AC-Ag/Ag3PO4 catalyst was synthesized by a facile co-precipitation method, and its structural, physicochemical, and electronic properties were evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDX), thermogravimetric and nitrogen sorption analysis. The results indicate that AC-Ag/Ag3PO4 at a concentration of 1 g.L−1 exhibits remarkable photocatalytic degradation, achieving 95.31% degradation of RhB after 180 min under broadband UVA irradiation. Investigating the photocatalytic elimination mechanism, h+ was identified as the key to RhB elimination, itself contributing to RhB degradation or through generation of HO•. Our results underline the potential of the AC-Ag/Ag3PO4 system as an effective method for treating RhB-contaminated wastewater, offering promising implications for environmental remediation. This paper proposes a new large loop antenna with a reduced magnetic field for a near field communication (NFC) target used in a metallic environment. It also defines a fairly clear method for controlling and, more specifically, reducing the magnetic field associated with loop antennas. This antenna consists of a circular winding, inside which we insert a square winding arranged in the shape of a diamond. The particular structure of this antenna shows that it is possible to dissociate the increase in the induced magnetic field, linked to its large size, from the increase in the number of windings. This study evaluates AI's effectiveness in boosting real-time decision-making and supply chain agility in West African ports. Utilizing Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), data from 250 supply chain experts across several countries, including Ghana and Nigeria, were analyzed. Results indicate significant enhancements in supply chain agility, particularly through improved data processing speed, system integration, prediction accuracy, and user interface quality, with the latter having the most substantial impact. The study underscores the importance of user-friendly AI systems, supported by Dynamic Capabilities Theory, which facilitates organizational adaptability to market changes. Recommendations focus on developing AI systems with robust user interfaces and ensuring seamless integration with existing IT infrastructures. This research contributes to the literature by empirically demonstrating AI's role in improving operational adaptability and filling theoretical gaps, with a unique regional focus and methodological approach. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a prevalent inherited blood disorder arising from a single point mutation that results in substitution of valine with glutamic acid in the Beta hemoglobin chain, making red blood cells assume a banana shape under low oxygen state. It is most prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, affecting approximately 2% of the population in Mali. This study aimed to evaluate the iron status and associated hematological parameters in SCD patients at steady state in an environment with a high prevalence of iron deficiency. A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Center de Recherche et de Lutte contre la Drépanocytose (CRLD) in Bamako, Mali, involving 757 SCD patients aged 10 to 29 years. Iron deficiency was defined as serum ferritin < 20 ng/mL, while iron overload was associated with serum ferritin > 500 ng/mL. The study population consisted of 171 (22.6%) hemolytic phenotypes (SS and Sβ0) and 586 (77.4%) viscous phenotypes (SC and Sβ+). Iron deficiency was found in 19 SCD patients (2.5%), with a higher prevalence in the SC phenotype (68.4%). All iron-deficient subjects exhibited microcytosis (MCV < 80 fL) and hypochromia (MCH < 26 pg). Hemoglobin levels < 12 g/dL were observed only in homozygous SCD patients. Low reticulocyte counts were noted in iron-deficient subjects with SC and Sβ+ phenotypes, but not in iron-deficient SS subjects. Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) was normal (< 10 mg/L) in all iron-deficient subjects, excluding iron deficiency due to chronic inflammation. Iron deficiency was observed among 2.5% of the study population, with a predominant occurrence among those with SC phenotype. All iron deficient subjects had microcytosis and hypochromia. Hemoglobin levels below 12 g/dL were only found in homozygous SCD patients. Additionally, low reticulocyte counts were noted in iron deficient patients with SC and Sβ+ phenotypes, though not in those with the SS phenotype. These findings contribute to the understanding of iron status in SCD patients in an African context and highlights the importance of monitoring iron levels in these population to prevent complications associated with iron deficiency or overload. Abstract Background In malaria endemic regions, intermittent preventive treatment with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (IPTp-SP) is recommended for all pregnant women during prenatal consultation, from the fourth month of pregnancy up to the time of delivery. The Government of Mali is aiming for universal coverage of IPTp-SP. However, coverage is still low, estimated to be 18% for completion of three doses (IPTp-SP3). The objective of this study was to identify the factors that influence IPTp-SP adherence in the Health District of Sélingué, Mali. Methods This was a cross-sectional survey with 30 clusters, proportional to village size, with two stages of sampling. Data were collected electronically with Magpi software during face-to-face interviews/surveys. The data were analysed with SPSS version 20. A descriptive analysis and bivariate and multivariate logistic regression were performed. An equity analysis examined the effect of distance from health care facility on completion of three or more antenatal visits (ANC3 +) and three or more doses of intermittent preventive treatment (IPTp-SP3 +). Results Of the 1,021 women surveyed, 87.8% (n = 896) attended at least one ANC visit. Of these, 86.3% (n = 773) received at least one dose of IPTp-SP. Compliance with three or more doses of IPTp-SP was 63.7%. The determinants statistically related to ANC3 + were the early initiation of ANC (OR = 3.22 [1.22, 10.78]), and the presence of a community health centre (CHC) in the village (OR = 9.69 [1.09, 86.21]). The ability to read (OR = 1.60 [1.01, 2.55]), the early initiation of ANC (OR = 1.46 [1.06, 2.00], knowledge of the utility of the drug (OR = 2.38 [1.24, 4.57]), and knowledge of the recommended dose of the drug (OR = 6.11 [3.98, 9.39]) were related to completion of three or more treatments (IPTp-SP3 +). Conclusion The early initiation of ANC was a positive determinant of the completeness of both ANC3 + and IPTp-SP3 + . This study shows that a successful implementation of the IPTp strategy can be achieved by improving access to prenatal care at community health facilities, and strengthening patient-provider communication to ensure adequate knowledge on dosing of IPTp-SP and the benefits to mother and child.

Abstract Background The current first-line treatments for uncomplicated malaria recommended by the National Malaria Control Programme in Mali are artemether–lumefantrine (AL) and artesunate–amodiaquine (ASAQ). From 2015 to 2016, an in vivo study was carried out to assess the clinical and parasitological responses to AL and ASAQ in Sélingué, Mali. Methods Children between 6 and 59 months of age with uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum infection and 2000–200,000 asexual parasites/μL of blood were enrolled, randomly assigned to either AL or ASAQ, and followed up for 42 days. Uncorrected and PCR-corrected efficacy results at days 28 and 42. were calculated. Known markers of resistance in the Pfk13, Pfmdr1, and Pfcrt genes were assessed using Sanger sequencing. Results A total of 449 patients were enrolled: 225 in the AL group and 224 in the ASAQ group. Uncorrected efficacy at day 28 was 83.4% (95% CI 78.5–88.4%) in the AL arm and 93.1% (95% CI 89.7–96.5%) in the ASAQ arm. Abstract Background Attractive targeted sugar baits (ATSBs) are a promising new tool for malaria control as they can target outdoor-feeding mosquito populations, in contrast to current vector control tools which predominantly target indoor-feeding mosquitoes. Methods It was sought to estimate the potential impact of these new tools on Plasmodium falciparum malaria prevalence in African settings by combining data from a recent entomological field trial of ATSBs undertaken in Mali with mathematical models of malaria transmission. The key parameter determining impact on the mosquito population is the excess mortality due to ATSBs, which is estimated from the observed reduction in mosquito catch numbers. A mathematical model capturing the life cycle of P. falciparum malaria in mosquitoes and humans and incorporating the excess mortality was used to estimate the potential epidemiological effect of ATSBs. Results The entomological study showed a significant reduction of ~ 57% (95% CI 33–72%) in mosquito catch numbers, and a larger reduction of ~ 89% (95% CI 75–100%) in the entomological inoculation rate due to the fact that, in the presence of ATSBs, most mosquitoes do not live long enough to transmit malaria. The excess mortality due to ATSBs was estimated to be lower (mean 0.09 per mosquito per day, seasonal range 0.07–0.11 per day) than the bait feeding rate obtained from one-day staining tests (mean 0.34 per mosquito per day, seasonal range 0.28–0.38 per day). Conclusions From epidemiological modelling, it was predicted that ATSBs could result in large reductions (> 30% annually) in prevalence and clinical incidence of malaria, even in regions with an existing high malaria burden. These results suggest that this new tool could provide a promising addition to existing vector control tools and result in significant reductions in malaria burden across a range of malaria-endemic settings.

La présente étude a permis d’évaluer l’aménagement des jardins privés de Yamoussoukro. Pour atteindre ce but, un inventaire floristique a été réalisé à partir de deux méthodes complémentaires. Au cours de l’inventaire, des placettes ont été installées. Aussi, la mesure des arbres de diamètre à hauteur de poitrine supérieur à 2,5 cm a été notée. Les densités, les aires basales, les biomasses et stocks de carbones et les indices de diversité ont été calculées. Au total, 5269 individus ont été dénombrés dont 2184 ont un DHP ≥ 2,5 cm. Senna siamea est l’espèce la plus représentative avec 10 % des effectifs. Les espèces à statut particulier recensées et la forte biomasse montrent qu’un regard doit être porté sur les jardins privés qui peuvent être des milieux pour la conservation de la biodiversité.
