Background. There are many examinations of doping in individual sports but less so in team sports. Methods. A simple decision theoretic model is constructed and analysed for the doping incentives and decisions of team member in professional sports. Results. Depending on the detection probability and the punishment of dopers, team sports members do not dope at all, at a medium or at the maximal level. The whole team has a higher incentive than an individual team member that at least some of its members dope. Conclusion. The doping incentives are different in team sports compared to individual sports. That there are less proven cases of doping in team sports could be because doping is less effective or because the incentives to cover it are higher than in individual sports. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Doping is a public health issue and not simply a problem inside the professional sports community It is a complex and ancient phenomenon considering the vast variety of substances, supplied through both legal and illegal trading routes. It occurs in elite athletes but also affects amateur athletes and was generally considered as dangerous and unhealthy. Furthermore, it involves athletes' friends and relatives, medical staff, managers, chemists, biologists and pharmacists, pharmaceutical industries, clandestine laboratories and criminal organizations. Over time, doping has shown a great ability to discover and always use new substances and appropriated the new scientific discoveries. Unfortunately, new discoveries for the human health have been used in distorted way by the athletes. In fact, the athletes may be able to use gene therapy to re-engineer their bodies for better performances. Drug dependence depends on several factors: the socio-environmental context of the subject and what effects have the substance in the body. We will agree that sport is essentially under the current anti-doping campaign executed by a coordinated alliance between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), law enforcement authorities, sports organizers and the media. Although explicit measures of doping attitude are widely used, they are susceptible to bias due to social desirability. The current computerized measures of implicit attitudes are time-consuming and based on expensive software solutions. Recently, paper-and-pencil (p&p) Implicit Association Tests (IAT) have been developed, making it possible to test several participants simultaneously, anywhere, and with no need of computerized equipment and software. The present series of studies aimed at developing a French version of a p&p IAT to measure athletes' attitudes toward doping (Chan et al., 2017): the IAT-Dop. Four studies, including 212 participants (Mage = 25.49, SD = 5.73), followed Bardin et al. (2016) and Boateng et al. (2018) validation recommendations: (a) development of a preliminary version of the IAT-Dop based on the proposal of Chan's tool (2017), (b) dimensionality and criterion validity tests demonstrating the structure of the p&p version, (c) test-retest reliability, and (d) first approach to construct validity. The results showed that the IAT-Dop was able to measure implicit attitudes toward doping and was stable across time. Significant correlations between the computerized and p&p versions confirmed the construct validity. The p&p IAT-Dop showed several advantages over the computerized version (Lemm et al., 2008), including lower cost and ease of administration. By offering accurate measures and an easier, faster, and cheaper way to measure doping attitudes, this tool should contribute to the better assessment and understanding of the mechanisms related to doping, and it might be a useful new indicator in the evaluation of prevention programs. Some ex-professional ice hockey enforcers (players whose primary role was fighting) have experienced negative health outcomes following their careers including substance use. Some have suggested that negative post-career outcomes following a career in contact sport relate specifically to neurotrauma. The purpose of this study was to determine whether ex-professional ice hockey enforcers were negatively impacted by substance use during and/or following their careers. It was hypothesised that given their role in the sport, significant exposure to injury (including concussions) occurred, leading to challenges post-career including substance use. This study utilises a mixed methods quantitative and qualitative approach with one-on-one semi-structured interviews and questions related to substance use. This hypothesis for this study was not supported. Participants in this study reported low levels of substance use post-career. Patterns of substance use during career varied by era with a change in use from alcohol and over-the-counter stimulants to opioids, sleep aids, and anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) estimated to occur near the mid to late 1990s. Four participants described patterns of excessive alcohol use during their careers. Stimulant use was prevalent in ice hockey pre-mid-1990s. The use of prescription opioids and sleep aids was reportedly rare before the mid to late 1990s, but eventually became easily attainable via team medical staff and prescription sharing. Two participants from the later era also reported use of AAS. This sample of ex-professional hockey enforcers experienced a significant number of concussions, continue to have challenges with chronic pain, and were exposed to several unique stressors during their careers, the effects of which may have varied based upon how the role was viewed. Human performance enhancing drugs (PEDs), frequently used in sport competitions, are strictly prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Biological samples collected from athletes and regular patients are continuously tested regarding the identification and/or quantification of the banned substances. Current work is focused on the application of a new analytical method, molecularly imprinted nanoparticles (nanoMIPs), to detect and determine concentrations of certain prohibited drugs, such as β-blockers, in water and human urine samples. These medications are used in the treatment of cardiovascular conditions, negative effects of adrenaline (helping to relief stress), and hypertension (slowing down the pulse and softening the arteries). They can also significantly increase muscle relaxation and improve heart efficiency. The new method of the detection and quantification of β-blockers is based on synthesis, characterization, and implementation of nanoMIPs (so-called plastic antibodies). It offers numerous advantages over the traditional methods, including high binding capacity, affinity, and selectivity for target molecules. Additionally, the whole process is less complicated, cheaper, and better controlled. The size and shape of the nanoMIPs is evaluated by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The affinity and selectivity of the nanoparticles are investigated by competitive pseudo enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (pseudo-ELISA) similar to common immunoassays employing natural antibodies. To provide reliable results towards either doping detection or therapeutic monitoring using the minimal invasive method, the qualitative and quantitative analysis of these drugs is performed in water and human urine samples. It is demonstrated that the assay can detect β-blockers in water within the linear range 1 nmol·L−1–1 mmol·L−1 for atenolol with the detection limit 50.6 ng mL−1, and the linear range 1 mmol·L−1–10 mmol·L−1 for labetalol with the detection limit of 90.5 ng·mL−1. In human urine samples, the linear range is recorded in the concentration range 0.1 mmol·L−1–10 nmol·L−1 for atenolol and 1 mmol·L−1–10 nmol·L−1 for labetalol with a detection limit of 61.0 ng·mL−1 for atenolol and 99.4 ng·mL−1 for labetalol. Research has shown that performance-enhancing substance (PES) use, including anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), is associated with interpersonal violence (e.g., fighting). This study aimed to determine whether legal PES use and AAS use are associated with intimate partner violence (IPV) involvement cross-sectionally and over seven-year follow-up in a nationally representative prospective cohort study. Data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (N = 12,288) were analyzed (2021). Logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine the associations between legal PES use and AAS use at Wave III (2001–2002; ages 18–26) and IPV victimization (five variables) and IPV perpetration (five variables) at Wave III and Wave IV (2008–2009; ages 24–32), adjusting for relevant demographic and confounding variables. Results from cross-sectional analyses showed that legal PES use and AAS use were associated with higher odds of both any IPV victimization and sexual IPV victimization, and both any IPV perpetration and physical IPV perpetration by pushing or shoving a partner. Results from prospective analyses showed that AAS use, but not legal PES use, was associated with higher odds of all five IPV victimization variables (any IPV victimization: adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 1.72, 95% confidence interval [CI]1.04–2.84; two forms of physical abuse: 1: AOR 2.01, 95% CI 1.15–3.50; 2: AOR 2.11, 95% CI 1.06–4.21; incurring an injury from IPV victimization: AOR 4.90, 95% CI 1.71–14.01; and sexual IPV victimization AOR 2.44, 95% CI 1.05–5.65), as well as three IPV perpetration variables (any IPV perpetration: AOR 2.11, 95% CI 105–4.23; one form of physical abuse perpetration: AOR 2.58, 95% CI 1.06–6.27; and sexual IPV perpetration: AOR 3.80, 95% CI 1.44–10.02). These results emphasize the adverse social and interpersonal risks associated with PES use. Knowledge about the prevalence of doping in recreational sports is still limited and fragmented. The same holds true for explanations of doping prevalence rates among different groups. One of the few theoretical models that exists uses the concept of consumer capital based on Stigler and Becker's theory of rational addiction. Building on the largest study on doping in recreational sports that has ever been conducted in Europe, the FAIR+ survey, hypotheses on the differences in doping prevalence rates, by the level of participation in competitions and by the relative time spent participating in the sport are, developed. Mapping the pharmaceutically significant entities on natural language to standardized terms/concepts is a key task in the development of the systems for pharmacovigilance, marketing, and using drugs out of the application scope. This work estimates the accuracy of mapping adverse reaction mentions to the concepts from the Medical Dictionary of Regulatory Activity (MedDRA) in the case of adverse reactions extracted from the reviews on the use of pharmaceutical products by Russian-speaking Internet users (normalization task). The solution we propose is based on a neural network approach using two neural network models: the first one for encoding concepts, and the second one for encoding mentions. Both models are pre-trained language models, but the second one is additionally tuned for the normalization task using both the Russian Drug Reviews (RDRS) corpus and a set of open English-language corpora automatically translated into Russian. Additional tuning of the model during the proposed procedure increases the accuracy of mentions of adverse drug reactions by 3% on the RDRS corpus. The resulting accuracy for the adverse reaction mentions mapping to the preferred terms of MedDRA in RDRS is 70.9% F 1 -micro. The paper analyzes the factors that affect the accuracy of solving the task based on a comparison of the RDRS and the CSIRO Adverse Drug Event Corpus (CADEC) corpora. It is shown that the composition of the concepts of the MedDRA and the number of examples for each concept play a key role in the task solution. The proposed model shows a comparable accuracy of 87.5% F 1 -micro on a subsample of RDRS and CADEC datasets with the same set of MedDRA preferred terms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The real epidemiology and the possible consequences of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) use still represent a very tricky task due to the difficulties in the quantification and detection of these drugs. Chronic use of AAS, frequently combined with other illicit substances, can induce tremendous negative effects on the reproductive system, but it is also associated with an increased overall and cardiovascular mortality risk. In the present review we summarize and discuss the available evidence regarding the negative impact of AAS on the male reproductive system, providing practical suggestions to manage these problems. For this purpose a meta-analysis evaluating the effects of AAS abusers vs. controls on several hormonal, reproductive and metabolic parameters was performed. In addition, in order to overcome possible limitations related to the combined use of different AAS preparations, we also retrospectively re-analyzed data on animal models treated with supraphysiological dosage of testosterone (T), performed in our laboratory. Available data clearly indicated that AAS negatively affect endogenous T production. In addition, increased T and estradiol circulating levels were also observed according to the type of preparations used. The latter leads to an impairment of sperm production and to the development of side effects such as acne, hair loss and gynecomastia. Furthermore, a worse metabolic profile, characterized by reduced high density lipoprotein and increased low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels along with an increased risk of hypertension has been also detected. Finally sexual dysfunctions, often observed upon doping, represent one the most probable unfavorable effects of AAS abuse.

[Display omitted] • Ba-doped γ-In 2 S 3 nanoribbons were synthesized for the first time. • Narrowing of bandgap was encountered after doping pristine γ-In 2 S 3 with Ba. • Resistivity was decreased from 17.34 to 2.55 Ωcm upon Ba doping. • Photodegradation of 2,4-D was enhanced from 77.08% to 94.15% after Ba doping. • Ba doping enhanced photodegradation by reducing charge carrier recombination. In this work, pristine γ-In 2 S 3 nanoribbons were synthesized using a facile solution process and uniquely doped with Ba for the first time. XRD and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the formation of pure-phase γ-In 2 S 3 and successful Ba doping. XPS further validated the presence of Ba 3d core level with In 3d and S 2p after the inclusion of Ba. FESEM and HRTEM images showed the formation of nanoribbons, with the width increasing from 60 to 100 nm after doping. The anticipated stoichiometry of In and S, with approximately 2 atomic % of Ba, was confirmed by EDS. After Ba-doping, the bandgap was narrowed from 3.66 eV to 3.03 eV, and the charge carrier recombination was substantially reduced, as witnessed by PL and EIS. The potential of pristine γ-In 2 S 3 and Ba-doped γ-In 2 S 3 as new photocatalysts was highlighted in this study, exploring their applicability for the photodegradation of the stubborn herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). The materials demonstrated impressive performances, achieving degradation efficiencies of 77.08 % and 94.15 % before and after doping, respectively, within 210 min. The scavenging tests revealed a significant contribution of O 2 •− and •OH for 2,4-D degradation using Ba-doped γ-In 2 S 3 photocatalyst. Besides photocatalysts used in this study demonstrated excellent stability after four cycles. Gas Chromatography Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (GC-C-IRMS) has long been used in routine laboratories to determine the δ13C values of anabolic steroids in urine, differentiating between, e.g., endogenous and synthetic testosterone (T) in sports doping control. Until now, liquid chromatography (LC-IRMS) has not been used. The LC-IRMS setup doesn't allow organic solvents or modifiers in the mobile phase for δ13C determinations. Mid-to non-polar analytes such as steroids can be analysed in water heated to High Temperatures (HT, up to 200 °C) because at 200 °C has a similar polarity as 80/20 methanol/water at ambient temperature. In this work, we developed a method for steroids in urine, extending the application of the LC-IRMS to non-polar analytes in complex matrices. An HT-LC-IRMS method capable of determining the δ13C values of four steroids (i.e., testosterone (T), 5α-androstane-3α,17β-diol (ααβ), 5β-androstane-3α,17β-diol (βαβ) and pregnanetriol (PT)) in urine was developed and validated. Accuracy ranged from 0.23 ‰ (ααβ and βαβ) to 0.49 ‰ (T), and the detection limit was set at 10 ng mL−1 (T, ααβ+βαβ). The validation data and a comparison of authentic urine samples analysed with HT-LC-IRMS and GC-C-IRMS indicated a comparable performance between HT-LC-IRMS and GC-C-IRMS. HT-LC-IRMS can be used to determine δ13C values of anabolic steroids, extending the applicability of both HT-LC and LC-IRMS to non-polar substances determined in a complex matrix in routine laboratory practice. Coordination polymers have emerged as promising materials for various applications due to their unique properties and structural versatility. Making a composite with coordination polymers may broaden their applications. In this study, we developed Iron doped Nickel Coordination polymer Fe@Ni-CP from previously synthesized nickel orotate coordination polymer and explored its efficacy in sensing Naproxen (NPX) and also as an electrode material for energy storage devices. Photoluminescence sensing investigations exhibited a notable enhancement in NPX sensing efficiency, whereby the Fe@Ni-CP composite displayed a sensing efficiency of 94.05 %, surpassing the 6.42 % efficiency observed when utilizing the Ni-Orotate coordination polymer alone. Moreover, both materials showed significant differences in specific capacitance when tested as energy storage electrodes using Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and Galvanostatic Charge Discharge (GCD). The Fe@Ni-CP has specific capacitance of 810.83 F/g, compared to 468.00 F/g for the Ni-CP. In Cyclic Voltammetry, Fe@Ni-CP retained 91.07 % specific capacitance after 4000 cycles. These findings underscore the potential of Fe@Ni-CP for multifunctional applications in sensing and energy storage. This study examines the synthesis and utilization of a Fe-doped Nickel Orotate coordination polymer composite (Fe@Ni-CP). The incorporation of iron enhances the Photoluminescence sensing capabilities of Naproxen by the Fe@Ni-CP composite (94.05 %) compared to the unmodified Ni-Orotate coordination polymer (6.42 %). When employed as an electrode material, the Ni-CP demonstrates a specific capacitance of 468.00 F/g, whereas the Fe@Ni-CP exhibits a notably enhanced specific capacitance of 810.83 F/g. Anabolic–androgenic steroids (AAS) are a class of hormones that are widely abused for their muscle-building and strength-increasing properties in high, nontherapeutic, dosages. This review provides an up-to-date and comprehensive overview on how these hormones work and what side effects they might elicit. We discuss how AAS are absorbed into the circulation after intramuscular injection or oral ingestion and how they are subsequently transported to the tissues, where they will move into the extravascular compartment and diffuse into their target cells. Inside these cells, AAS can biotransform into different metabolites or bind to their cognate receptor: the androgen receptor. AAS and their metabolites can cause side effects such as acne vulgaris, hypertension, hepatotoxicity, dyslipidemia, testosterone deficiency, erectile dysfunction, gynecomastia, and cardiomyopathy. Where applicable, we mention treatment options and self-medication practices of AAS users to counteract these side effects. Clinicians may use this review as a guide for understanding how AAS use can impact health and to assist in patient education and, in some cases, the management of side effects.

Current general restrictions on performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) pose a collective action problem that cannot be solved and bring a variety of adverse consequences for sport. General prohibitions of PEDs are grounded in claims that they violate the integrity of sport. But there are decisive arguments against integrity of sport-based prohibitions of PEDs for elite sport. We defend a harm prevention approach to PED prohibition as an alternative. This position cannot support a general ban on PEDs, since it provides no basis for prohibiting non-harmful PED use. We argue that a harm prevention approach to restricting PEDs is ethically justified, has better prospects of compliance, is consistent with respecting the integrity of sport, and holds at least a modest prospect of resolving the collective action problem around PED restriction. Without taking a position on the overall justification of anti-doping regulations, I analyse the possible justification of Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs) from such rules. TUEs are a creative way to prevent the unfair exclusion of athletes with a chronic condition, and they have the potential to be the least bad option. But they cannot be competitively neutral. Their justification must rest, instead, on the relevance of intentions to permissibility. I illustrate this by means of a set of thought experiments in which only an athlete’s intentions vary. I argue that the Doctrine of Double Effect (DDE) sheds some light on TUEs and illustrate this by applying different readings of the DDE to the thought experiment. This underpins a justification of anti-doping exemptions very different from the approach adopted by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). I argue for three changes to bring TUEs in line with this understanding: rewriting of the regulations, transparency, and a greater role for athletes in determining what exemptions are allowed, and when. Nutrition usually makes a small but potentially valuable contribution to successful performance in elite athletes, and dietary supplements can make a minor contribution to this nutrition program. Nonetheless, supplement use is widespread at all levels of sport. Products described as supplements target different issues, including the management of micronutrient deficiencies, supply of convenient forms of energy and macronutrients, and provision of direct benefits to performance or indirect benefits such as supporting intense training regimens. The appropriate use of some supplements can offer benefits to the athlete, but others may be harmful to the athlete's health, performance, and/or livelihood and reputation if an anti-doping rule violation results. A complete nutritional assessment should be undertaken before decisions regarding supplement use aremade. Supplements claiming to directly or indirectly enhance performance are typically the largest group of products marketed to athletes, but only a few(including caffeine, creatine, specific buffering agents and nitrate) have good evidence of benefits. However, responses are affected by the scenario of use and may vary widely between individuals because of factors that include genetics, the microbiome, and habitual diet. Supplements intended to enhance performance should be thoroughly trialed in training or simulated competition before implementation in competition. Inadvertent ingestion of substances prohibited under the anti-doping codes that govern elite sport is a known risk of taking some supplements. Protection of the athlete's health and awareness of the potential for harm must be paramount, and expert professional opinion and assistance is strongly advised before embarking on supplement use. In elite sport, where opponents are evenly matched, small factors can determine the outcome of sporting contests. Not all athletes know the value of making wise nutrition choices, but anything that might give a competitive edge, including dietary supplements, can seem attractive. Between 40% and 100% of athletes typically use supplements, depending on the type of sport, level of competition, and the definition of supplements. However, unless the athlete has a nutrient deficiency, supplementation may not improve performance and may have a detrimental effect on both performance and health. Dietary supplements are classified as a subcategory of food, so manufacturers are not required to provide evidence of product safety and efficacy, nor obtain approval from regulatory bodies before marketing supplements. This creates the potential for health risks, and serious adverse effects have been reported from the use of some dietary supplements. Athletes who compete in sports under an anti-doping code must also realize that supplement use exposes them to a risk of ingesting banned substances or precursors of prohibited substances. Government systems of regulations do not include specific laboratory testing for banned substances according to the WADA list, so a separate regulatory framework to evaluate supplements for their risk of provoking a failed doping test is needed. In the high-performance culture typical of elite sport, athletes may use supplements regardless of possible risks. Both athletes and the general population use nutritional supplements. Athletes often turn to supplements hoping that consuming the supplement will help them be more competitive and healthy, while the general population hopes to improve body image or vitality. While many supplements contain ingredients that may have useful properties, there are supplements that are contaminated with compounds that are banned for use in sport or have been deliberately adulterated to fortify a supplement with an ingredient that will produce the advertised effect. In the present study, we have used yeast cell and mammalian cell androgen bioassays to characterize the androgenic bioactivity of 112 sports supplements available from the Australian market, either over the counter or via the Internet. All 112 products did not declare an androgen on the label as an included ingredient. Our findings show that six out of 112 supplements had strong androgenic bioactivity in the yeast cell bioassay, indicating products spiked or contaminated with androgens. The mammalian cell bioassay confirmed the strong androgenic bioactivity of five out of six positive supplements. Supplement 6 was metabolized to weaker androgenic bioactivity in the mammalian cells. Further to this, Supplement 6 was positive in a yeast cell progestin bioassay. Together, these findings highlight that nutritional supplements, taken without medical supervision, could expose or predispose users to the adverse consequences of androgen abuse. The findings reinforce the need to increase awareness of the dangers of nutritional supplements and highlight the challenges that clinicians face in the fast-growing market of nutritional supplements. A growing body of evidence suggests sport supplement use is positively related to doping likelihood, both directly and indirectly via beliefs that sport supplements are effective for improving performance. However, it is unclear what leads an athlete to use sport supplements and whether such factors play a role in the supplement-beliefs-doping relationship. To address this issue, we examined whether motivational goal orientations were related to doping likelihood directly and indirectly via sport supplement use and sport supplement beliefs. Competitive athletes (N = 362, 39% female, mean ± SD; age = 23.6 ± 10.3 years, hours per week training = 5.8 ± 2.1, years competing = 5.8 ± 5.4) from a range of sports (e.g. athletics, soccer, weightlifting) completed an online survey measuring task and ego goal orientation, sport supplement use, sport supplement beliefs, and doping likelihood. Results indicated that ego orientation, but not task orientation, was indirectly related to doping likelihood via sport supplement use and sport supplement beliefs. This suggests that athletes who are ego oriented are more likely to use supplements, believe supplements are effective, and dope. These data suggest that researchers should consider ego goal orientations when interpreting relationships between sport supplement use and doping likelihood. Background: Athletes are subjected to disciplinary action for even unintentional doping. This study aimed to clarify the effectiveness of prior checks on athletes' drug regimens by medical personnel with knowledge of anti-doping to prevent unintentional doping. Methods: This is a retrospective evaluation of the inquiries to the Anti-Doping Committee by the Japan Table Tennis Association national team athletes and athlete support personnel between 2011 and 2019 regarding whether the drug in question was permitted and whether it contained any prohibited substance. Discrete evaluations were performed for ethical and over-the-counter drugs, in addition to the evaluation of all drugs. Additionally, we evaluated the drugs according to therapeutic category and World Anti-Doping Agency's classification. Results: Overall, 85/1238 (6.9%) ethical drugs, 49/259 (18.9%) over-the-counter drugs and 134/1497 (9.0%) total drugs were considered as not allowed for use. The proportion of over-the-counter drugs judged as not allowed for use was higher than that of ethical drugs (p < 0.001). When tabulating the drugs not allowed for use in the therapeutic category, numerous prohibited substances were identified in adrenal hormone preparations, Kampo products, synthetic narcotics, antitussives, antihemorrhoidals, and bronchodilators among ethical drugs and in cold remedies, gastrointestinal drugs, and antitussives and expectorants among over-the-counter drugs. Conclusions: Of the ethical and over-the-counter drugs that elite athletes wanted to use, approximately 10% were not allowed because of the risk of unintentional doping. These results suggest that conducting prior checks of the athletes' drug regimens by medical personnel with anti-doping knowledge are effective measures to prevent unintentional doping. Rationale: The synthetic β‐adrenoreceptor agonist zilpaterol is legitimately used as an animal feed supplement in selected countries due to its known effects on lipolysis and protein biosynthesis. These pharmacological characteristics of zilpaterol have contributed to its classification as doping agent in sport by the World Anti‐Doping Agency. However, the use as a feed supplement can lead to residues of the drug in edible tissues and, possibly, also in the urine of consumers. Methods: To provide urinary elimination profiles of microdosed zilpaterol and to determine whether the ingestion of zilpaterol below or at the acceptable daily intake level of 0.04 μg/kg bodyweight can result in an adverse analytical finding (AAF) in doping controls, healthy volunteers were administered single or multiple oral doses of 0.5 μg or 3 μg zilpaterol to mimic ingestion of contaminated cattle meat. Urine samples were collected and analyzed using a validated high‐performance liquid chromatography‐electrospray ionization‐tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC‐ESI‐MS/MS) method and a newly developed chiral high‐performance liquid chromatography–atmospheric pressure chemical ionization–tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC‐APCI‐MS/MS) method. Results: Urinary peak concentrations of zilpaterol were observed for all volunteers 1.5–12.5 h after ingestion, and maximum levels >5 ng/mL, which would constitute an AAF in doping controls, were found after the intake of 3 μg of zilpaterol on five consecutive days in one out of five study participants. Noteworthy, the enantiomeric ratio of excreted zilpaterol remained constant over time. Conclusion: This study provides first insights into the urinary excretion of microdosed zilpaterol. The aim of this study is to examine the criminal dimension in doping from a legal perspective. As a result of this examination, answers were sought to questions such as whether doping athletes are subject to a criminal procedure in general law, if so, how effective or applied, what are the contradictions between legal disciplines. In this study, in terms of general law and sports law, the conflict of the penalties given by the two legal disciplines within their own dynamics in doping is, more clearly, the fact that each branch of law treats the issue with its own perspective and the resulting contradictions. According to Article 162b of the Norwegian General Penal Code, any person who sends, imports, exports, sells, transports, manufactures any substance that is considered doping illegally will be charged with a doping offense and will be prosecuted with a sentence of 2 to 6 years in prison. While there is such an example in the world, such a legal system has not yet been established in Turkey. As a result, in Turkey, it is urgently necessary to ensure that general law and sports law meet on a common ground with the doping law to be prepared by experts in doping, and the federations should prepare their own internal regulations regarding doping based on this law. Doping in sports is well documented in the public sphere in the form of news reports, but additional weightage is given to such media coverage during a year in which a mega sporting event such as Olympic Games is being held. This article aims to study the academic publications on sports media coverage of doping and their influential role in the formation of public opinions. A systematic review of academic publications on sports media coverage of doping published between the years 2000 and 2021 was conducted and led to the identification of twenty-seven relevant articles from a sample size of 1,152. Most of the relevant publications were based on qualitative research of the American media and utilised content originating in the traditional media format such as the print newspaper. The key gaps existing in academic literature on this topic were due to lack of quantitative studies, exclusion of new media such as social media networks and over-reliance on American media sources which have their own vested interests and national agenda to push forward to the masses. Here, a novel transformed CdO with low coordination and N doping environment was simply synthesized through the involvement of the target molecule tetracycline (TC). The results showed that the shedding of surface hydroxyl groups led to a low coordination environment, and N doping formed a new doping energy level, which increased the charge density and promoted the migration and separation of photo-generated carriers. Its photocatalytic performance was 4.32 times higher than that of hydroxy-rich CdO and the selectivity coefficient was 4.8. Combined with theoretical calculation and in situ Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) analysis, the significant improvement of selectivity was due to the interaction of the doped N atom with the methyl carbon in TC. The use of doping by athletes to improve performance is prohibited. Therefore, doping testing is an important step to ensure fairness in sports. Doping is gradually metabolized in the body and is therefore difficult to detect immediately by a common method. At the same time, the emergence of new doping agents poses a challenge for highly sensitive detection. Electrochemical sensors are a fast, highly sensitive, and inexpensive analytical detection technology. It provides qualitative and quantitative determination of analytes by altering the electrochemical signal of the analyte or probe at the electrode. In this min-review, we summarized the different electrochemical sensing strategies for sterol doping detection. Some of the representative papers were interpreted in detail. Metal doped TiO2 has received increased scientific attention as visible‐light active photocatalytic materials. In this study, a novel, greener, microwave assisted synthetic route was employed to synthesize cobalt doped ilmenite (FeTiO3) /rutile (TiO2) without the need for isolation of TiO2 from natural sand. The successful doping of cobalt into ilmenite/rutile matrix was confirmed by shifts observed in basal peaks of ilmenite/rutile based on PXRD and significant changes in intensity and peak positions of core‐shell bands based on XPS. Band gap values observed for cobalt doped rutile and ilmenite were 3.57 and 2.74, respectively. Aforesaid observations were further corroborated by the enhanced photocatalytic behavior exhibited by cobalt doped ilmenite/rutile under visible light. Purpose: We investigated whether hepcidin and erythroferrone (ERFE) could complement the athlete biological passport (ABP) in indirectly detecting a 130-mL packed red blood cells (RBC) autologous blood transfusion. Endurance performance was evaluated. Methods: Forty-eight healthy men (n = 24) and women (n = 24) participated. Baseline samples were collected weekly followed by randomization to a blood transfusion (BT, n = 24) or control group (CON, n = 24). Only the BT group donated 450 mL whole blood from which 130 mL red blood cell was reinfused 4 wk later. Blood samples were collected 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28 d after donation, and 3, 6, and 24 h and 2, 3, and 6 d after reinfusion. In the CON group samples were collected with the same frequency. Endurance performance was evaluated by a 650-kCal time trial (n = 13) before and 1 and 6 d after reinfusion. Results: A time–treatment effect existed (P < 0.05) for hepcidin and ERFE. Hepcidin was increased (P < 0.01) ~110 and 89% 6 and 24 h after reinfusion. Using an individual approach (99% specificity, e.g., allowing 1:100 false-positive), sensitivities, i.e., true positives, of 30% and 61% was found for hepcidin and ERFE, respectively. For the ABP, the most sensitive marker was Off-hr score ([Hb] (g·L−1) − 60 × √RET%) (P < 0.05) with a maximal sensitivity of ~58% and ~9% after donation and reinfusion, respectively. Combining the findings for hepcidin, ERFE, and the ABP yielded a sensitivity across all time-points of 83% after reinfusion in BT. Endurance performance increased 24 h (+6.4%, P < 0.01) and 6 d after reinfusion (+5.8%, P < 0.01). Conclusions: Hepcidin and ERFE may serve as biomarkers in an antidoping context after an ergogenic, small-volume blood transfusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Aim: Escherichia coli O157:H7 is enterohemorrhagic E. coli, which produces verocytotoxin or Shiga toxin. It is a well-known cause of severe diseases in humans worldwide. Cattle and other ruminants are the main reservoirs of this organism. Sports animals, such as fighting bulls, riding horses, and fighting cocks, are economic animals in Southern Thailand. This study aimed to identify E. coli O157:H7 from the rectal swabs of these sports animals and determine the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of isolated bacteria. Materials and Methods: The rectal swabs were collected from 34 fighting bulls, 32 riding horses, and 31 fighting cocks. The swabs were cultured on MacConkey (MAC) Agar; the suspected colonies were then identified by VITEK® 2 GN card, and the antimicrobial susceptibility was tested by VITEK® 2 AST N194 in VITEK® 2 Compact automation. Escherichia coli O157:H7 was confirmed by culturing on sorbitol MAC agar, the ability to grow at 44°C, and the presence of H7 antigen. In addition, the eaeA (E. coli attaching and effacing), along with stx1 and stx2 (Shiga cytotoxins) genes, were determined using polymerase chain reaction. Finally, the cytotoxicity of Shiga toxin was confirmed using the Vero cytotoxicity test. Results: Fifty-five suspected isolates (56.70%), which were collected from 19 fighting bulls (55.88%), 13 riding horses (40.63%), and 23 fighting cocks (71.13%), were identified as E. coli. However, one sample (Bull H9/1) from fighting bulls had an equal confidence level (50%) for E. coli and E. coli O157. The confirmation of this isolate demonstrated that it was sorbitol non-fermenter, could assimilate L-lactate, was unable to grow well at 44°C, and reacted with anti-serum to H7 antigen. In addition, it was positive with stx2 and eaeA genes, and the toxin affected Vero cells by a dose-dependent response. The antimicrobial susceptibility test revealed that five out of 55 (9.09%) E. coli isolates were resistant to antimicrobial agents. All five isolates (21.74%) were collected from fighting cocks. Escherichia coli Cock H4/3 was only one of the five isolates resistant to three antimicrobial agents (ciprofloxacin, moxifloxacin, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole). Fortunately, it was not multidrug-resistant bacteria. Conclusion: This is the first report on detection of E. coli O157:H7 in fighting bulls and antibiotic-resistant characteristic of E. coli in fighting cocks in Southern Thailand. The World Anti‐Doping Agency now allows cannabidiol (CBD) to be taken in elite sport, but has retained all other cannabinoids on its banned list. This, together with liberalisation of cannabis laws, has led to an increasing interest in its use in sport. This includes commercial sponsorship of sporting events and highlights the need for accurate information to be readily available to athletes and their advisers. This narrative review confirms that CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) do not enhance performance. CBD possesses anti‐inflammatory and analgesic properties that have not been adequately evaluated in the area of sport. Context: Clinical evaluations that require excluding androgen abuse, a secretive, illicit activity, rely on the drug history, but its veracity for androgen abuse has neither been verified nor has any objective corroborating laboratory test been validated. Objective: In a high-risk population, to (a) validate the drug history of androgen abuse objectively using state-of-the-art World Anti-Doping Agency–accredited antidoping laboratory urine mass spectrometry tests and (b) to determine what biochemical tests best distinguish androgen abuse from nonuse in this population. Methods: Urine samples from current (n = 41) and past (n = 31) androgen abusers and nonusers (n = 21) were analyzed by comprehensive mass spectrometry-based detection tests for androgens and related drugs (ARD). Results: No prohibited ARDs were identified among nonusers. Current users had a median of 5 (range 1-13) drugs detected comprising 176 ARDs among 220 drug identifications. Past users had a median of 1 (range 0-9) drugs detected comprising 21 ARDs among 43 drugs. Negative predictive value was high (>0.8) for those denying drug usage while positive predictive value was good (>0.6) for both those reporting currently using (current) and not using (nonusers plus past users) ARD. Serum luteinizing hormone (LH) alone had high, but imperfect, discriminatory power (89%) to distinguish between current and noncurrent androgen use. Conclusions: We demonstrates that a negative drug history in a high-risk group has high reliability and that even a single suppressed serum LH exhibits high discrimination for objectively detecting androgen abuse. Abuse of androgens and erythropoietin has led to hormones being the most effective and frequent class of ergogenic substances prohibited in elite sports by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). At present, thyroid hormone (TH) abuse is not prohibited, but its prevalence among elite athletes and nonprohibited status remains controversial. A corollary of prohibiting hormones for elite sports is that endocrinologists must be aware of a professional athlete’s risk of disqualification for using prohibited hormones and/or to certify Therapeutic Use Exemptions, which allow individual athletes to use prohibited substances for valid medical indications. This narrative review considers the status of TH within the framework of the WADA Code criteria for prohibiting substances, which requires meeting 2 of 3 equally important criteria of potential performance enhancement, harmfulness to health, and violation of the spirit of sport. In considering the valid clinical uses of TH, the prevalence of TH use among young adults, the reason why some athletes seek to use TH, and the pathophysiology of sought-after and adverse effects of TH abuse, together with the challenges of detecting TH abuse, it can be concluded that, on the basis of present data, prohibition of TH in elite sport is neither justified nor feasible. The aim of this research was to explore the attitudes of elite athletes towards performance enhancement through banned substances. In this study, survey model, which is one of the quantitative research methods, was used. Purposive sampling method was used in the data collection process. Participants consisted of a sample group of elite athletes (n = 418: 49.3% female, 50.7% male;). Participants answered questions about sociodemographic characteristics as well as performance enhancement attitudes. A performance enhancement attitude scale was used to determine the participants' attitudes towards performance enhancement. Data were analyzed using SPSS Version 22.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Elite level athletes participating in the study were found to have low use of prohibited substances for performance enhancement. There was no difference between the attitudes of the participants to increase their performance according to their gender and educational status. Participation of the participants in individual or team sports did not lead to a difference between their performance enhancement attitudes. It was found that as the duration of being a national athlete of the participants in the study increased, their attitudes towards using prohibited substances for performance enhancement increased. From the point of view of elite athletes, the use of banned substances for performance enhancement was found to be low. However, as the duration of being an elite athlete increases, it has been found that the attitude towards the use of banned substances for performance enhancement increases. Policies should be developed to discourage elite athletes from using banned substances. Coaches and managers need to correctly manage success strategies at all levels of sports. The concern about gene doping has remained high in horseracing and other equestrian competitions. Our laboratory has previously developed a duplex quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assay capable of detecting in equine blood the human erythropoietin (hEPO) transgene and equine tubulin α 4a (TUBA4A) gene as an internal control the latter providing quality control over DNA extraction and qPCR. This study aimed to optimize the method for routine testing of regulatory samples. The use of an automated DNA extraction system has increased the sample throughput, consistency of DNA extraction, and recovery of reference materials. The use of reduced concentration of primers and hydrolysis probe for internal control minimized their competition with transgene amplification and improved the assay sensitivity. Spike‐in of an exogenous internal control at low concentration for plasma analysis has also been validated. Using the new workflow, four duplex qPCR assays have been developed for the detection of transgenes, namely, hEPO, human growth hormone (hGH), insulin‐like growth factor 1 (hIGF‐1), and equine EPO (eEPO). The estimated limits of detection (LODs) of each transgene were 2000 copies/mL of blood and 200 copies/mL of plasma. This method could detect the presence of transgene in blood and plasma collected from a horse administered intramuscularly (IM) with recombinant adeno‐associated virus (rAAV) carrying the hEPO transgene. A longer detection time was observed in blood than in plasma. AICAR (5-amino-4-imidazolecarboxyamide ribonucleoside), as a metabolic modulator, is classified in the S4 category by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Carbon Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (CIR) is the mainstream method for distinguishing the endogenous and exogenous sources of AICAR in urine due to the significant individual difference in the concentration. The purpose of this study is to establish a gas chromatography combustion Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (GC/C/IRMS) method for AICAR based on efficient two-dimensional liquid chromatography (2D-HPLC) separation., Method: In this study, an automated 2D-HPLC separation technique was used to separate and purify AICAR and endogenous reference substances in urine samples. Then, AICAR was derivatized with 3-TMS as the main derivative product, while the endogenous reference compounds remained in their original form. Subsequently, the developed GC/C/IRMS method was utilized for the detection of the target and reference substances. Followed, we evaluated the applicability of this method using urine samples from two Asian males administered a low dose of AICAR (3 grams)., Results: The advantages of this study include: 1) reduced sample pretreatment time: the established 2D-HPLC separation method can separate the target and endogenous reference substances in one step; 2) low interference: the isotope chromatograms have low background interference, and the separation of endogenous reference substances is purer; 3) more accurate result calculations: this method only requires derivatization and result correction for AICAR, with the endogenous reference substances measured in their original form, reducing biases from corrections of multiple substances. The detection method performed well, with a concentriton limit of 2500 ng/mL, meeting the needs of routine detection concentrations. The CIR results from volunteer samples indicated that samples collected within 16 hours post-administration exceeded the threshold set in the literature., Conclusion: This study successfully established a 2D-HPLC-GC/IRMS method that integrates CIR as the most stable indicator for distinguishing the internal and external sources of AICAR. After administering a low dose of AICAR to the Asian population, exogenous drug characteristics were manifested within 16 hours.
