176. Factors influencing membership in a tourism promotion authority

Abstract

This study examined factors that influence business membership in a new voluntary statewide tourism promotion organization. Three types of factors were considered: the characteristics of the business, beliefs about tourism and statewide tourism promotion, and the perceived benefits/costs of membership. Data were obtained from telephone surveys of current members and nonmembers of the Colorado Travel and Tourism Authority (CTTA). Results from a predictive model indicated that three tourism beliefs and three of the benefits/costs variables differentiated current members from nonmembers. For the model examining the likelihood of a nonmember becoming a CTTA member, two of the belief statements about tourism, two of the perceived benefits/costs variables, and one business characteristic (years of operation) were significant. The implications of these findings for increasing membership in the CTTA are discussed.

Abstract

The advent of new sources of spatial data and associated information (e.g. Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI)) allows us to explore non-expert conceptualisations of space, where the number of participants and spatial extent coverage encompassed can be much greater than is available through traditional empirical approaches. In this paper we explore such data through the prism of landscape preference or scenicness. VGI in the form of photographs is particularly suited to this task, and the volume of images has been suggested as a simple proxy for landscape preference. We propose another approach, which models landscape aesthetics based on the descriptions of some 220000 images collected in a large VGI project in the UK, and more than 1.5 million votes related to the perceived scenicness of these images collected in a crowdsourcing project. We use image descriptions to build features for a supervised machine learning algorithm. Features include the most frequent uni- and bigrams, adjectives, presence of verbs of perception and adjectives from the "Landscape Adjective Checklist". Our results include not only qualitative information relating terms to scenicness in the UK, but a model based on our features which can predict some 52% of the variation in scenicness, comparable to typical models using more traditional approaches. The most useful features are the 800 most frequent unigrams, presence of adjectives from the "Landscape Adjective Checklist" and a spatial weighting term.

Abstract

Abstract: The conspecific attraction hypothesis predicts that individuals are attracted to conspecifics because conspecifics may be cues to quality habitat and/or colonists may benefit from living in aggregations. Poison frogs (Dendrobatidae) are aposematic, territorial, and visually oriented—three characteristics which make dendrobatids an appropriate model to test for conspecific attraction. In this study, we tested this hypothesis using an extensive mark‐recapture dataset of the strawberry poison frog (Oophaga pumilio) from La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica. Data were collected from replicate populations in a relatively homogenous Theobroma cacao plantation, which provided a unique opportunity to test how conspecifics influence the spatial ecology of migrants in a controlled habitat with homogenous structure. We predicted that (1) individuals entering a population would aggregate with resident adults, (2) migrants would share sites with residents at a greater frequency than expected by chance, and (3) migrant home ranges would have shorter nearest‐neighbor distances (NND) to residents than expected by chance. The results were consistent with these three predictions: Relative to random simulations, we observed significant aggregation, home‐range overlap, and NND distribution functions in four, five, and six, respectively, of the six migrant–resident groups analyzed. Conspecific attraction may benefit migrant O. pumilio by providing cues to suitable home sites and/or increasing the potential for social interactions with conspecifics; if true, these benefits should outweigh the negative effects of other factors associated with aggregation. The observed aggregation between migrant and resident O. pumilio is consistent with conspecific attraction in dendrobatid frogs, and our study provides rare support from a field setting that conspecific attraction may be a relevant mechanism for models of anuran spatial ecology.
