Time resolved, in-situ, energy dispersive x-ray diffraction was performed in an electrolysis cell during electrochemical loading of palladium foil cathodes with hydrogen and deuterium. Concentrations of H:Pd (D:Pd) up to 1:1 in 0.1 M LiOH (LiOD) in H2O (D2O) electrolyte were obtained, as determined by both the Pd lattice parameter and cathode resistivity. In addition, some indications on the kinetics of loading and deloading of hydrogen from the Pd surface were obtained. The alpha-beta phase transformations were clearly delineated but no new phases at high concentration were determined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a measurement of the correlation between the spins of t and tbar quarks produced in proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. We apply a matrix element technique to dilepton and single-lepton+jets final states in data accumulated with the D0 detector that correspond to an integrated luminosity of 9.7 fb$^{-1}$. The measured value of the correlation coefficient in the off-diagonal basis, $O_{off} = 0.89 \pm 0.22$ (stat + syst), is in agreement with the standard model prediction, and represents evidence for a top-antitop quark spin correlation difference from zero at a level of 4.2 standard deviations., Published version

- Abstract
Subjective reports of sleep disturbance are a common feature of Huntington's disease (HD); however, there is limited research investigating the relationship between sleep problems with changes in brain and behaviour. This study aimed to investigate whether subjective reports of sleep problems in HD are associated with brain volume, neurocognitive decline, and neuropsychiatric symptoms. This retrospective pilot study used brain volume, neurocognitive and neuropsychiatric data from premanifest (pre-HD) and symptomatic HD (symp-HD). Subjective sleep problem was measured using the sleep item of the Beck's Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). Pre-HD individuals reporting sleep problems had significantly poorer neuropsychiatric outcomes compared to those not reporting sleep problems. In the symp-HD group, those with sleep problems had significantly accelerated thalamic degeneration and poorer neuropsychiatric outcomes compared to those without sleep problems. There was no relationship between subjective sleep problems and neurocognitive measures. These findings suggest an association between subjective sleep disturbance, neuropathology, and development of neuropsychiatric symptoms in HD. Further studies using quantitative EEG-based monitoring of sleep in HD and changes in the brain and behaviour will be necessary to establish the causal nature of this relationship.Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. - Abstract
Objectives: To measure iron accumulation in the basal ganglia in Huntington's disease (HD) using quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM), and to ascertain its relevance in terms of clinical and disease severity. Method(s): In this cross-sectional investigation, T2* weighted imaging was undertaken on 31 premanifest HD, 32 symptomatic HD and 30 control participants as part of the observational IMAGE-HD study. Group differences in iron accumulation were ascertained with QSM. Associations between susceptibility values and disease severity were also investigated. Result(s): Compared with controls, both premanifest and symptomatic HD groups showed significantly greater iron content in pallidum, putamen and caudate. Additionally, iron accumulation in both putamen and caudate was significantly associated with disease severity. Conclusion(s): These findings provide the first evidence that QSM is sensitive to iron deposition in subcortical target areas across premanifest and symptomatic stages of HD. Neuropsychiatric disturbances are common in Huntingtons Disease (HD) and have been observed in genepositive individuals several years prior to the onset of motor symptoms. The neural mechanism underpinning the development of neuropsychiatric problems in HD remain unclear. Objective(s): To investigate whether neural activity during working memory is associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms in premanifest Huntingtons Disease. Method(s): functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from Pre-HD far from onset (pre-HDfar , n = 18), pre-HD close to onset (pre-HDclose , n = 17), and controls (n = 32) were analysed. Correlations were performed between fMRI activity in three regions of interest [bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC)] and neuropsychiatric scores. Result(s): In the pre-HDclose group, increased symptoms of obsessive compulsion and depression were associated with decreased blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) fMRI activity in the right DLPFC and ACC during 1-BACK and 2-BACK working memory conditions. In the pre-HDfar group increased symptoms of depression was associated with decreased right DLPFC BOLD fMRI activity during 2-BACK working memory only. Conclusion(s): The findings suggest that association between neuropsychiatric function and fMRI activity is more readily detectable at higher working memory loads, and becomes more pronounced in those closer to onset.Copyright © 2015 IOS Press and the authors. - Abstract
People often find it hard to disagree with others, but how this disposition varies across individuals or how it is influenced by social factors like other people's level of expertise remains little understood. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we found that activity across a network of brain areas [comprising posterior medial frontal cortex (pMFC), anterior insula (AI), inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), lateral orbitofrontal cortex, and angular gyrus] was modulated by individual differences in the frequency with which participants actively disagreed with statements made by others. Specifically, participants who disagreed less frequently exhibited greater brain activation in these areas when they actually disagreed. Given the role of this network in cognitive dissonance, our results suggest that some participants had more trouble disagreeing due to a heightened cognitive dissonance response. Contrary to expectation, the level of expertise (high or low) had no effect on behavior or brain activity.

- Abstract
Lorca earthquake (11-05-2011) is most destructive event recorded in Spain, causing nine fatalities and other severe consequences. Its important intensity was rather unexpected, and serious concern arose regarding risk of building stock in Spain. This paper analyzes performance, under Lorca earthquake, of RC buildings with one-way slabs with wide beams. This construction type is chosen for its high vulnerability and for being vastly widespread in Spain. This study is conducted on 3 and 6-story prototype representative buildings. These buildings are designed for three major seismic zones in Spain: low seismicity, moderate seismicity (as Lorca) and medium seismicity (as Granada). Seismic performance under Lorca earthquake is numerically investigated through nonlinear time-history analyses. Results show that buildings designed without any seismic provision (i.e. those in low seismicity zones) do not survive Lorca record, even with cooperation of masonry infill walls. Buildings with seismic design (i.e. those in Lorca and Granada zones) can survive Lorca earthquake only with collaboration of infill walls. To raise reliability of these conclusions, a sensitivity analysis to most influencing parameters is conducted., Postprint (author's final draft)

A measurement of the tt̄ production cross section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV has been performed at the LHC with the CMS detector. The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb[superscript -1] and is based on the reconstruction of the final state with one isolated, high transverse-momentum electron or muon and three or more hadronic jets. The kinematic properties of the events are used to separate the tt̄ signal from W+jets and QCD multijet background events. The measured cross section is 173 +39 -32 (stat. + syst.) pb, consistent with standard model expectations. © 2011 CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration., National Science Foundation (U.S.), United States. Introduction: The discovery of vitamin D muscle receptors in the last few years suggested a significant role in muscle tissue, pointing out athletes as a special group. Specific data are scarce. Aim: The main aim of the current paper was to provide, for the first time, comparable data about vitamin D status in elite Spanish athletes by sport, age, season and training environment. Methods: Four hundred and eight elite athletes with a mean age of 22.8 ± 8.4 years were recruited from the High-performance sport centre in Barcelona for this cross-sectional study. Athletes from 34 different sports modalities were analysed. Data were available for vitamin D status, training environment, seasonality and number of medical visits. All data were analysed using SPSS version 18.0. Results: Mean 25(OH)D of all athletes was 56.7 ± 23.4 nmol/L. Approximately 82% of the athletes were below the optimal levels, (< 75nmol/l), 45% had moderate deficient levels (< 50 nmol/L) and 6% had severe deficiency (< 27.5 nmol/L). 175. Development and Evaluation of an Innovative Chronic Disease Management Program in Valencia-La Fe Health Department

- Abstract
Valencia La Fe-Health Department, aligned with the Regional Ministry of Health, is pushing an Innovative Chronic Diseases Management Program, by introducing a new, proactive, care model based on current policies, best practices and evidence available aiming to a greater control of the patients while they are at homes. The program has been developed working on the seven courses of action, covering all the components required according to experts. This includes a) identification and stratification of the population, b) care processes design in coordination with all health care resources involved according to case management methodology, c) guidelines and protocols documentation and design of educational programs, d) Service portfolio development and care planning and coordination across care level e) promotion of new technologies, f) continuous assessment and improvement of quality of care g) alignment of resources and incentives in the Health Department. The predictive model developed identifies 3.28% of the total population, related to 72% annual consumption of unplanned weighted resources in our reference population. Chronic management program was evaluated through both a quasi-experimental study including 1900 patients enrolled in the case management program and a randomized clinical trial (RCT) including 495 patients on 3 branches (standard practice, phone supported intervention and technology based intervention). RCT preliminary results regarding health-related quality of life and other outcomes variables will be available during the first quarter of 2014.

Background: There is a wealth of evidence detailing gray matter degeneration and loss of cognitive function over time in individuals with Huntington's disease (HD). Efforts to attenuate disease-related brain and cognitive changes have been unsuccessful to date. Multidisciplinary rehabilitation, comprising motor and cognitive intervention, has been shown to positively impact on functional capacity, depression, quality of life and some aspects of cognition in individuals with HD. This exploratory study aimed to evaluate, for the first time, whether multidisciplinary rehabilitation can slow further deterioration of disease-related brain changes and related cognitive deficits in individuals with manifest HD. Methods: Fifteen participants who manifest HD undertook a multidisciplinary rehabilitation intervention spanning 9 months. The intervention consisted of once-weekly supervised clinical exercise, thrice-weekly self-directed home based exercise and fortnightly occupational therapy. Participants were assessed using MR imaging and validated cognitive measures at baseline and after 9 months. Results: Participants displayed significantly increased gray matter volume in the right caudate and bilaterally in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex after 9 months of multidisciplinary rehabilitation. Volumetric increases in gray matter were accompanied by significant improvements in verbal learning and memory (Hopkins Verbal Learning-Test). A significant association was found between gray matter volume increases in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and performance on verbal learning and memory. Conclusions: This study provides preliminary evidence that multidisciplinary rehabilitation positively impacts on gray matter changes and cognitive functions relating to verbal learning and memory in individuals with manifest HD. Larger controlled trials are required to confirm these preliminary findings.

Neutron inelastic scattering cross sections measured directly through (n,n) or deduced from -ray production cross sections following inelastic neutron scattering (n,n'γ) are a focus of basic and applied research at the University of Kentucky Accelerator Laboratory (www.pa.uky.edu/accelerator). For nuclear data applications, angle-integrated cross sections are desired over a wide range of fast neutron energies. Several days of experimental beam time are required for a data set at each incident neutron energy, which limits the number of angular distributions that can be measured in a reasonable amount of time. Approximations can be employed to generate cross sections with a higher energy resolution, since at 125o, the a
2 P2 term of the Legendre expansion is identically zero and the a4 P4 is assumed to be very small. Provided this assumption is true, a single measurement at 125o would produce the γ-ray production cross section. This project tests these assumptions and energy dependences using the codes CINDY/SCAT and TALYS/ECIS06/SCAT. It is found that care must be taken when interpreting γ-ray excitation functions as cross sections when the incident neutron energy is < 1000?keV above threshold or before the onset of feeding. In recent years, diffusion MRI has become an extremely important tool for studying the morphology of living brain tissue, as it provides unique insights into both its macrostructure and microstructure. Recent applications of diffusion MRI aimed to characterize the structural connectome using tractography to infer connectivity between brain regions. In parallel to the development of tractography, additional diffusion MRI based frameworks (CHARMED, AxCaliber, ActiveAx) were developed enabling the extraction of a multitude of micro-structural parameters (axon diameter distribution, mean axonal diameter and axonal density). This unique insight into both tissue microstructure and connectivity has enormous potential value in understanding the structure and organization of the brain as well as providing unique insights to abnormalities that underpin disease states. The CONNECT (Consortium Of Neuroimagers for the Non-invasive Exploration of brain Connectivity and Tracts) project aimed to combine tractography and micro-structural measures of the living human brain in order to obtain a better estimate of the connectome, while also striving to extend validation of these measurements. This paper summarizes the project and describes the perspective of using micro-structural measures to study the connectome.

One of the most suitable approaches for the production of inorganic nanotubes is by means of carbon nanotube (CNT) templates coated by atomic layer deposition (ALD). This approach is attractive because it has the potential of controlling the wall thickness down to the Angstroms level. However, it is a recognized fact that the chemistry of the substrate surface can delay the full coverage at the initial stages of the ALD coating process, mainly due to nucleation issues. This is an important issue that might restrict laying down homogeneous coatings within the ultrathin range, which is the foundation for producing self-supported inorganic nanotubes. Here, we explore the early stage of the TiO nucleation on CNT templates systematically functionalized with different chemical groups (COOH, OH) or N-doped. The effects of the functionalization on the nucleation process from tetrakis (dimethylamino) titanium and water were meticulously studied by means of transmission electron microscopy. Observations revealed grain-like growth of TiO over pristine, purified and -OH-functionalized CNTs. In contrast, COOH functionalization yielded good conformality, which was improved on N-doped CNTs. Results were confirmed by X-rays photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. We recommend either COOH or N-doped CNTs for the production of ultrathin TiO nanotubes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To investigate structural connectivity and the relationship between axonal microstructure and clinical, cognitive, and motor functions in premanifest (pre-HD) and symptomatic (symp-HD) Huntington's disease. Method(s): Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data were acquired from 35 pre-HD, 36 symp-HD, and 35 controls. Structural connectivity was mapped between 40 brain regions of interest using tractography. Between-group differences in structural connectivity were identified using network based statistics. Radial diffusivity (RD) and fractional anisotropy (FA) were compared in the white matter tracts from aberrant networks. RD values in aberrant tracts were correlated with clinical severity, and cognitive and motor performance. Result(s): A network connecting putamen with prefrontal and motor cortex demonstrated significantly reduced tractography streamlines in pre-HD. Symp-HD individuals showed reduced streamlines in a network connecting prefrontal, motor, and parietal cortices with both caudate and putamen. The symp-HD group, compared to controls and pre-HD, showed both increased RD and decreased FA in the fronto-parietal and caudate-paracentral tracts and increased RD in the putamen-prefrontal and putamen-motor tracts. The pre-HDclose, compared to controls, showed increased RD in the putamen-prefrontal and fronto-parietal tracts. In the pre-HD group, significant negative correlations were observed between SDMT and Stroop performance and RD in the bilateral putamen-prefrontal tract. In the symp-HD group, RD in the fronto-parietal tract was significantly positively correlated with UHDRS motor scores and significantly negatively correlated with performance on SDMT and Stroop tasks. Conclusion(s): We have provided evidence of aberrant connectivity and microstructural integrity in white matter networks in HD. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate spatial working memory (WM) in an N-BACK task (0, 1, and 2-BACK) in premanifest Huntington's disease (pre-HD, n = 35), early symptomatic Huntington's disease (symp-HD, n = 23), and control (n = 32) individuals. Overall, both WM conditions (1-BACK and 2-BACK) activated a large network of regions throughout the brain, common to all groups. However, voxel-wise and time-course analyses revealed significant functional group differences, despite no significant behavioral performance differences. During 1-BACK, voxel-wise blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal activity was significantly reduced in a number of regions from the WM network (inferior frontal gyrus, anterior insula, caudate, putamen, and cerebellum) in pre-HD and symp-HD groups, compared with controls; however, time-course analysis of the BOLD response in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) showed increased activation in symp-HD, compared with pre-HD and controls. The pattern of reduced voxel-wise BOLD activity in pre-HD and symp-HD, relative to controls, became more pervasive during 2-BACK affecting the same structures as in 1-BACK, but also incorporated further WM regions (anterior cingulate gyrus, parietal lobe and thalamus). The DLPFC BOLD time-course for 2-BACK showed a reversed pattern to that observed in 1-BACK, with a significantly diminished signal in symp-HD, relative to pre-HD and controls. Our findings provide support for functional brain reorganisation in cortical and subcortical regions in both pre-HD and symp-HD, which are modulated by task difficulty. Moreover, the lack of a robust striatal BOLD signal in pre-HD may represent a very early signature of change observed up to 15 years prior to clinical diagnosis. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

We characterized 30-month longitudinal change in functional activation and connectivity during working memory in premanifest (pre-HD) and symptomatic (symp-HD) Huntington's disease (HD). In a case-control longitudinal study (baseline, 18 months, and 30 months), we compared change in fMRI activity over time during working memory in 22 pre-HD, 11 symp-HD, and 20 control participants. Outcome measures were BOLD (blood-oxygen-level-dependent) activity during 1-BACK and 2-BACK working memory and functional connectivity between dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and caudate. Compared with controls, the pre-HD group showed significantly increased activation longitudinally during 1-BACK in the left DLPFC and medial frontal cortex, and further increased activation during 2-BACK in the bilateral caudate, putamen, and temporal cortex. Longitudinal change in symp-HD was not significantly different from controls. Longitudinal changes in pre-HD were associated with disease burden and years to onset. The pre-HD group showed longitudinal decreased functional connectivity between left DLPFC and caudate during both 1-BACK and 2-BACK performance. We provide an evidence for longitudinal changes in BOLD activity during working memory prior to clinical manifestations of HD. The ability to increase activation in the prefrontal cortex over time may represent an early compensatory response during the premanifest stage, which may reflect an early marker for clinically relevant functional changes in HD. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Result(s): Compared with controls, the pre-HD group showed significantly increased activation longitudinally during 1-BACK versus 0-BACK in the lateral and medial prefrontal, anterior cingulate, primary motor, and temporal areas cortically, and caudate and putamen subcortically. Pre-HD far from onset, compared with controls, showed further longitudinal increases in the right and left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Longitudinal increased activation in anterior cingulate and medial primary motor areas were associated with disease burden in the pre-HD group. Moreover, in pre-HD increased activation over time in primary motor and putamen regions were associated with average response time during 1-BACK performance. During 1-BACK, functional connectivity between the right DLPFC and posterior parietal, anterior cingulate, and caudate was significantly reduced over 18. months only in the pre-HD group. Conclusion(s): Longitudinal reductions in connectivity over 18. months may represent an early signature of cortico-cortical and cortico-striatal functional disconnectivity in pre-HD, whereas the concomitant increased cortical and subcortical activation may reflect a compensatory response to the demands for cognitive resources required during task performance. We observed a range of significant volumetric and, for the first time, diffusion changes over 18 months in both pre-HD and symp-HD, relative to controls, detectable at the brain-wide level (volume change in grey and white matter) and in caudate and putamen (volume and diffusivity change). Importantly, longitudinal volume change in the caudate was the only measure that discriminated between groups across all stages of disease: far from diagnosis (>15 years), close to diagnosis (<15 years) and after diagnosis. Of the two diffusion metrics (mean diffusivity, MD; fractional anisotropy, FA), only longitudinal FA change was sensitive to group differences, but only after diagnosis. These findings further confirm caudate atrophy as one of the most sensitive and early biomarkers of neurodegeneration in HD.
