Abstract

We present a study of 16 H   i -detected galaxies found in 178 h of observations from Epoch 1 of the COSMOS H  i Large Extragalactic Survey (CHILES). We focus on two redshift ranges between 0.108 ≤ |$z$| ≤ 0.127 and 0.162 ≤ |$z$| ≤ 0.183 which are among the worst affected by radio frequency interference (RFI). While this represents only 10 per cent of the total frequency coverage and 18 per  cent of the total expected time on source compared to what will be the full CHILES survey, we demonstrate that our data reduction pipeline recovers high-quality data even in regions severely impacted by RFI. We report on our in-depth testing of an automated spectral line source finder to produce H  i total intensity maps which we present side-by-side with significance maps to evaluate the reliability of the morphology recovered by the source finder. We recommend that this become a common place manner of presenting data from upcoming H  i surveys of resolved objects. We use the COSMOS 20k group catalogue and extract the filamentary structure using the topological DisPerSE algorithm to evaluate the H  i morphology in the context of both local and large-scale environments and we discuss the shortcomings of both methods. Many of the detections show disturbed H  i morphologies suggesting they have undergone a recent interaction which is not evident from deep optical imaging alone. Overall, the sample showcases the broad range of ways in which galaxies interact with their environment. This is a first look at the population of galaxies and their local and large-scale environments observed in H  i by CHILES at redshifts beyond the |$z$|  = 0.1 Universe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The supergiant VX Sagittarii is a strong emitter of both H2O and SiO masers. However, previous VLBI observations have been performed separately, which makes it difficult to spatially trace the outward transfer of the material consecutively. Here we present the astrometrically registered, simultaneous maps of 22.2 GHz H2O and 43.1/42.8/86.2/129.3 GHz SiO masers toward VX Sagittarii. The H2O masers detected above the dust-forming layers have an asymmetric distribution. The multi-transition SiO masers are nearly circular ring, suggesting spherically symmetric wind within a few stellar radii. These results provide the clear evidence that the asymmetry in the outflow is enhanced after the smaller molecular gas clump transform into the inhomogeneous dust layers. The 129.3 GHz maser arises from the outermost region compared to that of 43.1/42.8/86.2 GHz SiO masers. The ring size of the 129.3 GHz maser is maximized around the optical maximum, suggesting that radiative pumping is dominant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This research examines how public school principals in eight U.S. states perceive their teacher evaluation systems, which are based on Charlotte Danielson's Framework for Teaching (FfT). States were selected to represent high, middle, and low scorers in the annual Education Week "Quality Counts" report (Education Week, 2016). A total of 1,142 out of over 8,100 working principals in the eight states responded to an online survey, yielding a response rate of over 14 percent. Most principals were somewhat satisfied with FfT but found implementing the system too cumbersome. Responses suggested an average of two changes to FfT desired by each principal; few wanted to keep their FfT as is. Targets for improvement included overhauling software used to enter teacher evaluations; eliminating student growth goals and student test scores (VAMs) as part of evaluations; reducing the time and paperwork required; and wanting more training for administrators and teachers on the use of FfT. Some states' principals wanted to return control over teacher evaluation systems to local school districts. Most respondents agreed that their version of FfT has improved their school's instructional program, and they prefer the new instrument over their previous evaluation instrument. Abstract

The Korean VLBI Network (KVN) is a unique millimeter VLBI system which is consisted of three 21 m telescopes with relatively short baselines. We present the preliminary results of simultaneous monitoring observations of the 22.2 GHz H2O and 43.1/42.8/86.2/129.3 GHz SiO masers based on the KVN Key Science Project (KSP). We obtained the astrometrically registered maps of the H2O and SiO masers toward nine evolved stars using the source frequency phase referencing method (SFPR). The SFPR maps of the H2O and SiO masers enabled us to investigate the spatial structure and kinematics from the SiO to H2O maser regions including the development of an outward motion from the ring-like or elliptical structures of SiO masers to the asymmetric structures of the 22.2 GHz H2O maser features. In particular, the 86.2/129.3 GHz SiO (v =1, J =2–1 and J =3–2) masers were clearly imaged toward several objects for the first time. The SiO v =1, J =3–2 maser shows different distributions compared to those of the SiO v =1, 2, J =1–0 and v =1, J =2–1 masers implying a different physical condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

182. The Impact of Frequency Standards on Coherence in VLBI at the Highest Frequencies

Abstract

We have carried out full imaging simulation studies to explore the impact of frequency standards in millimeter and submillimeter very long baseline interferometry (VLBI), focusing on the coherence time and sensitivity. In particular, we compare the performance of the H-maser, traditionally used in VLBI, to that of ultra-stable cryocooled sapphire oscillators over a range of observing frequencies, weather conditions, and analysis strategies. Our simulations show that at the highest frequencies, the losses induced by H-maser instabilities are comparable to those from high-quality tropospheric conditions. We find significant benefits in replacing H-masers with cryocooled sapphire oscillator based frequency references in VLBI observations at frequencies above 175 GHz in sites which have the best weather conditions; at 350 GHz we estimate a 20%-40% increase in sensitivity over that obtained when the sites have H-masers, for coherence losses of 20%-10%, respectively. Maximum benefits are to be expected by using co-located Water Vapor Radiometers for atmospheric correction. In this case, we estimate a 60%-120% increase in sensitivity over the H-maser at 350 GHz.

200. Kentucky Principal Perceptions of the State's New Teacher Evaluation System: A Survey Analysis.

Abstract

This research examines how public school principals in Kentucky perceive their new teacher evaluation system and the proficiency exam they must take and pass in order to evaluate their staff. An online survey was developed and 308 out of an estimated 1,100 working school principals across Kentucky responded, yielding a response rate of 28%. Results showed that most Kentucky principals were not happy with the new teacher evaluation system and the proficiency test they must take. Responses suggested an average of three changes they would make to the evaluation system or the proficiency test; positive comments were rare. Targets for improvement include the software system used to enter teacher evaluations, the evaluation's student growth goals and student voice section, and more training from the state on how to use the new evaluation instrument. A majority of the principals might leave their job earlier than planned because of having to implement the new evaluation instrument; most also might leave earlier than planned because of the increased number of teacher evaluations they have to perform as part of the system or because of the increased emphasis on test scores in teachers' evaluations. Most respondents, however, agreed that using the new evaluation system has improved their school's instructional program and that the new instrument is preferable to their old teacher evaluation instrument.
