158. A Domain Specific Language for Online Learning Competence Assessments.

Abstract

Learning outcomes in higher education are defined as competencies, which are either specific or generic. The former refers to those skills specific to the subject studied. The latter, also known as transferable skills, refer to other capabilities that a capable professional has to put into practice to work in real-world. Generic competencies are usually shared amongst most science fields, and include teamwork, leadership and self-criticism. These skills are inherently difficult to assess, as they arc not usually considered in traditional engineering assessment procedures. As a result, lectures usually have to assess them using subjective information. This is especially problematic when the number of students increases. In this paper, we introduce Simple Assessment-Specific Query Language (SASQL), a Domain Specific Language (DSL) to alleviate this issue. It is a formal language that can be automatically processed to execute SASQL sentences using an assessment-specific vocabulary. SASQL has a simple syntax, oriented to learning assessments. Using our proposed workflow, a course coordinator can extract different objective indicators to assess competencies defined in the syllabus using simple queries. Such indicators are automatically extracted from the activity logs generated by the Learning Management System (LMS). Two case studies with Moodle LMS-based courses are carried out to explain how such indicators can be obtained and how to interpret the results obtained for student assessments. Abstract

The analysis phase constitutes an essential step in the development of information systems. This fact is perhaps even more important in the development of learning software: the process of creating learning materials must take into account the range of abilities, needs, and interests of different stakeholders, adapting itself to a variety of contexts and pedagogical paradigms. It is therefore a complex process that must consider diverse perspectives and levels of abstraction. Currently, there are two trends among others in Software Engineering engaged in optimizing the process of information systems development: Aspect-Oriented Software Development and Model-Driven Architecture. The combination of both mechanisms can facilitate the development of complex information systems like computer-supported learning systems. The intention of this paper is to propose an analysis method in learning material development process based on Aspect-Oriented Analysis and Model-Driven Architecture. In a distributed knowledge management system, knowledge is firstly produced and then delivered to a person or community of users that is interested in it. Knowledge creation or production is a set of cooperative tasks that need to be coordinated. A multiagent architecture is introduced for this aim, where knowledge-producing agents are arranged into knowledge domains or marts, and a distributed interaction protocol is used to consolidate knowledge that is generated. Following this trend, and given the efficiency of the outcomes, it seems convenient to adapt existing product line development principles from software engineering to the development of learning resources. The purpose of this paper is to postulate a specific analysis method for computer-supported learning systems that guarantees the quality of the development. Abstract

Virtual Worlds (VWs) are popular tools for teaching/learning in the twenty-first century classroom. The challenge remains however, to provide the means by which teachers could sustainably analyse and assess the performance of large groups of students in such environments. Unfortunately, external game features such as game scores and play duration have turned out to be unfair in some assessments. In this context, a case study was carried out in a foreign language course, illustrating how teachers could easily retrieve a number of performance indicators from VW-interaction logs and harness them to conduct a fine-grained analysis of students' performance, while facilitating at the same time valuable tools for their assessment. Objective performance indicators in a server database were made accessible using an end-user development programming language. This way, a range of data visualisation methods could be employed to contrast different assumptions regarding learner performance when playing a VW-based game, which was designed to help CEFR A1 level students to learn German. This way, factors such as randomisation of game tasks, which could negatively affect learner performance, were alleviated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The availability of digitised cultural heritage content held by archives and other memory institutions improves their visibility, facilitate and increases access to information, allowing new kinds of research of digital heritage, namely Digital Humanities. This study intends to report how Municipal Archives of mainland Portugal are ensuring access to their digitized cultural heritage content. For this purpose, an analysis was held to collect data about online catalogues with digital objects linked to the archival description in 278 Municipal Archives of mainland Portugal. The data revealed that the openness of the primary information sources preserved by the municipal archives, which can be reused by all those who need them and particularly by digital humanists, is still in infancy.
