The stability of drinking water disinfectant residuals is known to be influenced by multiple variables. To evaluate the effects of various influencing variables on disinfectant stability, a multivariate analysis of chloramine decay and associated disinfection by-products (DBPs) formation was investigated in a series of bench-scale experiments. Of nine water quality variables previously identified, monochloramine dose, pH, and bromide concentration were selected as key water quality variables based on previous investigations and modelling. Co-effects of these key variables on monochloramine decay and formation of 33 halogenated and nitrogen-containing DBPs were investigated using response surface experimental design. Rechloramination conditions, including monochloramine dose, pH and bromide concentration, were optimised via a 3-factorial multivariate analysis of monochloramine stability in post-treatment drinking water. Effects of influencing variables on disinfectant decay and DBP formation were assessed and graphically presented as response surfaces with minimal experiments using Doehlert matrix experimental design compared to other multivariate experimental designs. Concentrations of trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetic acids (HAAs), and N-nitrosamines were found to increase with water age, whereas opposite phenomenon was observed in the net production of haloacetonitriles (HANs). Increasing pH was found to stabilise monochloramine but it could cause DBP speciation to shift. Furthermore, increasing bromide concentration elevated Br-DBP formation. In bromide-containing water, pH = 7.8-8.0 should be considered as higher pH increases Br-THMs formations and lower pH increases formations of Br-HAAs and Br-HANs. However, water age or pH has insignificant impacts on DBP formation after significant monochloramine decay or at low initial monochloramine dose. These findings indicate that effective combined control measures to maintain monochloramine stability should include the application of high monochloramine dose (>1.5 mg-Cl 2 .L -1 ) under conditions of moderate to high pH (pH = 7.8-8.0) and minimal bromide concentration. Halogenated aromatic disinfection byproducts (DBPs) exhibited similar total organic halogen levels in chlorinated drinking water samples as compared with aliphatic ones, and they predominantly accounted for the overall toxicity of the samples. Among the reported halogenated aromatic DBPs, halonitrophenols (HNPs) have received particular attention in recent years due to the relatively high risk in drinking water. In this study, a new group of halogenated aromatic DBPs were detected and then proposed to be halohydroxybenzonitriles (HHBNs) by employing the ultra-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometers. Thereafter, the specific HHBN species in drinking water were theoretically speculated and then thoroughly identified with standard compounds. Their occurrence in drinking water was investigated, their cytotoxicity was evaluated, and their stability in the presence of chlorine was assessed. Seven newly identified HHBNs, including 3,5-dichloro-4-hydroxybenzonitrile, 3,5-dichloro-2-hydroxybenzonitrile, 5-bromo-3-chloro-4-hydroxybenzonitrile, 5-bromo-3-chloro-2-hydroxybenzonitrile, 3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxybenzonitrile, 3,5-dibromo-2-hydroxybenzonitrile, and 3,5-diiodo-4-hydroxybenzonitrile, showed 100% detection frequency in the collected drinking water samples with concentrations up to 36 ng/L. HHBNs exhibited significantly higher cytotoxicity in Chinese hamster ovary cells than regulated DBPs (e.g., trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids), which might be contributed by their cellular uptake efficiency and nucleophilicity. The seven HHBNs were proved to undergo transformation during chlorination following pseudo-first-order decay with half-lives in the range of 9-63 h. More importantly, in comparison to HNPs, which showed relatively high toxicity and strong stability among the halogenated aromatic DBPs, HHBNs presented comparable concentration-cytotoxicity contribution (50%) and slightly weaker stability (43%), suggesting that HHBNs should be a new group of DBPs of concern in drinking water., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Although the health benefits of swimming are well-documented, health effects such as asthma and bladder cancer are linked to disinfection by-products (DBPs) in pool water. DBPs are formed from the reaction of disinfectants such as chlorine (Cl) or bromine (Br) with organics in the water. Our previous study (Daiber et al., Environ. Sci. Technol. 50, 6652; 2016) found correlations between the concentrations of classes of DBPs and the mutagenic potencies of waters from chlorinated or brominated swimming pools and spas. We extended this study by identifying significantly different concentrations of 21 individual DBPs in brominated or chlorinated pool and spa waters as well as identifying which DBPs and additional DBP classes were most associated with the mutagenicity of these waters. Using data from our previous study, we found that among 21 DBPs analyzed in 21 pool and spa waters, the concentration of bromoacetic acid was significantly higher in Br-waters versus Cl-waters, whereas the concentration of trichloroacetic acid was significantly higher in Cl-waters. Five Br-DBPs (tribromomethane, dibromochloroacetic acid, dibromoacetonitrile, bromoacetic acid, and tribromoacetic acid) had significantly higher concentrations in Br-spa versus Cl-spa waters. Cl-pools had significantly higher concentrations of Cl-DBPs (trichloroacetaldehyde, trichloromethane, dichloroacetic acid, and chloroacetic acid), whereas Br-pools had significantly higher concentrations of Br-DBPs (tribromomethane, dibromoacetic acid, dibromoacetonitrile, and tribromoacetic acid). The concentrations of the sum of all 4 trihalomethanes, all 11 Br-DBPs, and all 5 nitrogen-containing DBPs were each significantly higher in brominated than in chlorinated pools and spas. The 8 Br-DBPs were the only DBPs whose individual concentrations were significantly correlated with the mutagenic potencies of the pool and spa waters. Water disinfection is an essential process that provides safe water by inactivating pathogens that cause waterborne diseases. However, disinfectants react with organic matter naturally present in water, leading to the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs). Multi-analyte methods based on mass spectrometry (MS) are preferred to quantify multiple DBP classes at once however, most require extensive sample pre-treatment and significant resources. In this study, two analytical methods were developed for the quantification of 32 regulated and unregulated DBPs. A purge and trap (P&T) coupled with gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method was optimized that automated sample pre-treatment and analyzed volatile and semi-volatile compounds, including trihalomethanes (THMs), iodinated trihalomethanes (I-THMs), haloacetonitriles (HANs), haloketones (HKTs) and halonitromethanes (HNMs). LOQs were between 0.02-0.4 µg/L for most DBPs except for 8 analytes that were in the low µg/L range. A second method with liquid chromatography (LC) tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) was developed for the quantification of 10 haloacetic acids (HAAs) with a simple clean-up and direct injection. The LC-MS/MS direct injection method has the lowest detection limits reported (0.2-0.5 µg/L). Both methods have a simple sample pre-treatment, which make it possible for routine analysis. Hyperchlorination and uniform formation conditions (UFC) formation potential tests with chlorine were evaluated with water samples containing high and low TOC. Hyperchlorination formation potential test maximized THMs and HAAs while UFC maximized HANs. Ascorbic acid was found to be an appropriate quencher for both analytical methods. Halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) are an unintended consequence of drinking water disinfection, and can have significant toxicity. XAD resins are commonly used to extract and enrich trace levels of DBPs for comprehensive, nontarget identification of DBPs and also for in vitro toxicity studies. However, XAD resin recoveries for complete classes of halogenated DBPs have not been evaluated, particularly for low, environmentally relevant levels (ng/L to low µg/L). Thus, it is not known whether levels of DBPs or the toxicity of drinking water might be underestimated. In this study, DAX-8/XAD-2 layered resins were evaluated, considering both adsorption and elution from the resins, for extracting 66 DBPs from water. Results demonstrate that among the 7 classes of DBPs investigated, trihalomethanes (THMs), including iodo-THMs, were the most efficiently adsorbed, with recovery of most THMs ranging from 50%-96%, followed by halonitromethanes (40%-90%). The adsorption ability of XAD resins for haloacetonitriles, haloacetamides, and haloacetaldehydes was highly dependent on the individual species. The adsorption capacity of XAD resins for haloacetic acids was lower (5%-48%), even after adjusting to pH 1 before extraction. Recovery efficiency for most DBPs was comparable with their adsorption, as most were eluted effectively from XAD resins by ethyl acetate. DBP polarity and molecular weight were the two most important factors that determine their recovery. Recovery of trichloromethane, iodoacetic acid, chloro- and iodo-acetonitrile, and chloroacetamide were among the lowest, which could lead to underestimation of toxicity, particularly for iodoacetic acid and iodo-acetonitrile, which are highly toxic., (Copyright © 2022. Disinfectants are added to swimming pools to kill harmful pathogens. Although liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) is the most commonly used disinfectant, alternative disinfection techniques like electrochemically generated mixed oxidants or electrochemically generated chlorine, often referred to as salt water pools, are growing in popularity. However, these disinfectants react with natural organic matter and anthropogenic contaminants introduced to the pool water by swimmers to form disinfection byproducts (DBPs). DBPs have been linked to several adverse health effects, such as bladder cancer, adverse birth outcomes, and asthma. In this study, we quantified 60 DBPs using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and assessed the calculated cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of an indoor community swimming pool before and after switching to a salt water pool with electrochemically generated chlorine. Interestingly, the total DBPs increased by 15% upon implementation of the salt water pool, but the calculated cytotoxicity and genotoxicity decreased by 45% and 15%, respectively. Predominant DBP classes formed were haloacetic acids, with trichloroacetic acid and dichloroacetic acid contributing 57% of the average total DBPs formed. Haloacetonitriles, haloacetic acids, and haloacetaldehydes were the primary drivers of calculated cytotoxicity, and haloacetic acids were the primary driver of calculated genotoxicity. Diiodoacetic acid, a highly toxic iodinated DBP, is reported for the first time in swimming pool water. Bromide impurities in sodium chloride used to electrochemically generate chlorine led to a 73% increase in brominated DBPs, primarily driven by bromochloroacetic acid. Chlorine, chlorine dioxide, and ozone are widely used as disinfectants in drinking water treatments. However, the combined use of different disinfectants can result in the formation of various organic and inorganic disinfection byproducts (DBPs). The toxic interactions, including synergism, addition, and antagonism, among the complex DBPs are still unclear. In this study, we established and verified a real-time cell analysis (RTCA) method for cytotoxicity measurement on Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell. Using this convenient and accurate method, we assessed the cytotoxicity of a series of binary combinations consisting of one of the 3 inorganic DBPs (chlorite, chlorate, and bromate) and one of the 32 regulated and emerging organic DBPs. The combination index (CI) of each combination was calculated and evaluated by isobolographic analysis to reflect the toxic interactions. The results confirmed the synergistic effect on cytotoxicity in the binary combinations consisting of chlorite and one of the 5 organic DBPs (2 iodinated DBPs (I-DBPs) and 3 brominated DBPs (Br-DBPs)), chlorate and one of the 4 organic DBPs (3 aromatic DBPs and dibromoacetonitrile), and bromate and one of the 3 organic DBPs (2 I-DBPs and dibromoacetic acid). The possible synergism mechanism of organic DBPs on the inorganic ones may be attributed to the influence of organic DBPs on cell membrane and cell antioxidant system. Whalers Bay, in Deception Island, has one of the most anthropogenically impacted areas in Maritime Antarctica. However, considering the volcanic nature (high concentrations of heavy metals) of Deception Island's soils, this putative anthropogenic impact should be carefully investigated. In this context, the objective of this study was to compare resistome profiles of impacted and non-impacted areas in Deception Island (Whalers Bay, Crater Lake, and Fumarole Bay) and Livingston Island (Hannah Point) in order to investigate the microbiome tolerance/resistance mechanisms selected as a function of environmental drivers. Metagenomics was used to search for genes conferring resistance/tolerance to antibiotics, biocides, and heavy metals. Whalers Bay has a greater diversity of antibiotic, biocide, and heavy metal resistance classes found in its microbiomes. However, Hannah Point, at Livingston Island, has a greater abundance of antibiotic and biocide resistance/tolerance genes. The microbiome of Deception Island's non-impacted areas (Crater Lake and Fumarole Bay) showed resistance/tolerance genes almost entirely to heavy metals. Pb was found in higher concentrations in Whalers Bay soil in comparison to the other areas, indicating human contamination. The non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis revealed that Pb concentrations influenced resistome profiles in Whalers Bay soil. Despite the effect of Pb on the microbial communities of Whalers Bay, most heavy metal concentrations did not have a significant impact on resistome genes, suggesting that the volcanic soil heavy metal concentration of Deception Island has little biological influence., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Pre-oxidation has been reported to be an effective way to remove algal cells in water, but the released algal organic matter (AOM) could be oxidized and lead to the increment in disinfection by-product (DBP) formation. The relationship between pre-oxidation and AOM-derived DBP formation needs to be approached more precisely. This study compared the impact of four pre-oxidants, ozone (O 3 ), chlorine dioxide (ClO 2 ), potassium permanganate (KMnO 4 ) and sodium hypochlorite (NaClO), on the formation of nitrogenous (N-) and carbonaceous (C-) DBPs in AOM chlorination. The characterization (fluorescent properties, molecular weight distribution and amino acids concentration) on AOM samples showed that the characterization properties variations after pre-oxidation were highly dependent on the oxidizing ability of oxidants. The disinfection experiments showed that O 3 increased DBP formation most significantly, which was consistent with the result of characterization properties variations. Then canonical correspondent analysis (CCA) and Pearson's correlation analysis were conducted based on the characterization data and DBP formation. CCA indicated that C-DBPs formation was highly dependent on fluorescent data. The formation of haloacetic acids (HAAs) had a positive correlation with aromatic protein-like component while trichloromethane (TCM) had a positive correlation with fulvic acid-like component. Pearson's correlation analysis showed that low molecular weight fractions were favorable to form N-DBPs. Therefore, characterization data could provide the advantages in the control of DBP formation, which further revealed that KMnO 4 and ClO 2 were better options for removing algal cells as well as limiting DBP formation., (Copyright © 2021. A survey was conducted at eight U.S. drinking water plants, that spanned a wide range of water qualities and treatment/disinfection practices. Plants that treated heavily-wastewater-impacted source waters had lower trihalomethane to dihaloacetonitrile ratios due to the presence of more organic nitrogen and HAN precursors. As the bromide to total organic carbon ratio increased, there was more bromine incorporation into DBPs. This has been shown in other studies for THMs and selected emerging DBPs (HANs), whereas this study examined bromine incorporation for a wider group of emerging DBPs (haloacetaldehydes, halonitromethanes). Moreover, bromine incorporation into the emerging DBPs was, in general, similar to that of the THMs. Epidemiology studies that show an association between adverse health effects and brominated THMs may be due to the formation of brominated emerging DBPs of heath concern. Plants with higher free chlorine contact times before ammonia addition to form chloramines had less iodinated DBP formation in chloraminated distribution systems, where there was more oxidation of the iodide to iodate (a sink for the iodide) by the chlorine. This has been shown in many bench-scale studies (primarily for iodinated THMs), but seldom in full-scale studies (where this study also showed the impact on total organic iodine. Collectively, the THMs, haloacetic acids, and emerging DBPs accounted for a significant portion of the TOCl, TOBr, and TOI; however, ∼50% of the TOCl and TOBr is still unknown. Disinfection by-products (DBPs), formed from the reactions of disinfectants with natural organic matter and halides in drinking water, were considered to be cytotoxic and genotoxic, and might trigger various cancers. The relatively low concentration of DBPs in finished water (low µg/L or even ng/L levels) and the interference from water matrix inhibited in situ determination of DBPs. Moreover, the further formation and degradation of DBPs by disinfectants during the holding time (several hours to several days) from sample collection to analysis could adversely affect the determination of DBPs. To obtain accurate, precise and reliable data of DBP occurrence and formation, robust and reliable sample preservation is indispensable. However, the commonly used quenching agents (e.g., sodium sulfite, sodium thiosulfate, and ascorbic acid) for sample preservation can decompose reactive DBPs by reductive dehalogenation. This study evaluated the performance of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and glutathione (GSH) as quenching agents for the analysis of halogenated DBPs by investigating the stoichiometry of the disinfectant-quenching agent reaction, the formation of DBPs during chlor(am)ination of NAC or GSH, and the effects of NAC or GSH on the stability of 18 individual DBPs and total organic halogen (TOX). Swimming pools adopt chlorination to ensure microbial safety. Giardia has attracted attention in swimming pool water because of its occurrence, pathogenicity, and chlorine resistance. To control Giardia concentrations in pool water and reduce the microbial risk, higher chlorine doses are required during disinfection. Unfortunately, this process produces carcinogenic disinfection byproducts that increase the risk of chemical exposure. Therefore, quantitatively evaluating the comparative microbial vs. chemical exposure risks that stem from chlorination inactivation of Giardia in swimming pool water is an issue that demands attention. We simulated an indoor swimming pool disinfection scenario that followed common real-world disinfection practices. A quantitative microbial risk assessment coupled with a chemical exposure risk assessment was employed to compare the Giardia microbial exposure risk (MER) and the trihalomethane chemical exposure risk (CER) to humans. The results demonstrated a 22% decrease in MER- and CER-induced health exposure risk, from 8.45E-5 at 8:00 to 6.60E-5 at 19:00. Both the MER and CER decreased gradually, dropping to 3.26E-5 and 3.35E-5 at 19:00, respectively. However, the CER exceeded the MER after 18:30 and became the dominant factor affecting the total exposure risk. Past the 18 hr mark, the contribution of trihalomethane CER far exceeded the risk aversion from microbial inactivation, leading to a net increase in total exposure risk despite the declining MER. Swimmers may consider swimming after 19:00, when the total exposure risk is the lowest. Halobenzoquinones (HBQs) as disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water is prioritized for research due to their prevalent occurrence and high toxicity. However, only fifteen HBQs can be identified among a high diversity using targeted LC-MS/MS analysis in previous studies due to the lack of chemical standards. In this study, we developed a pseudo-targeted LC-MS/MS method for detecting and quantifying diverse HBQs. Distinct fragment characteristics of HBQs was observed according to the halogen substituent effects, and extended to the development of a multiple-reaction-monitoring (MRM) method for the quantification of the 46 HBQs that were observed in simulated drinking water using non-targeted analysis. The fragmentation mechanism was supported by the changes of Gibbs free energy (ΔG), and a linear relationship between the ΔG and the ionization efficiency of analytes was developed accordingly for quantification of these 46 HBQs, 30 of which were lack of chemical standards. It is noted that 29 of the 30 newly-identified HBQs were halo-methyl-benzoquinones (HMBQs), which were predicted to be carcinogens related with drinking-water bladder cancer risk and be more toxic than non-methyl HBQs. Using the new method, twelve HMBQs were detected in actual drinking water samples with concentrations up to 100.4 ng/L, 3 times higher than that reported previously. The cytotoxicity in CHO cells of HMBQs was over 1-fold higher than that of non-methyl-HBQs. Halophenolic disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water have attracted considerable concerns in recent years due to their wide occurrence and high toxicity. The liver has been demonstrated as a major target organ for several halophenolic DBPs. However, little is known about the underlying mechanisms of liver damage caused by halophenolic DBPs. In this study, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP), 2,4,6-tribromophenol (TBP) and 2,4,6-triiodiophenol (TIP) were selected as representative halophenolic DBPs and exposed to C57BL/6 mice at an environmentally-relevant concentration (0.5 μg/L) and two toxicological concentrations (10 and 200 μg/L) for 12 weeks. Then, a combination of histopathologic and biochemical examination, liver transcriptome, serum metabolome, and gut microbiome was adopted. It was found that trihalophenol exposure significantly elevated the serum levels of alkaline phosphatase and albumin. Liver inflammation was observed at toxicological concentrations in the histopathological examination. Transcriptome results showed that the three trihalophenols could impact immune-related pathways at 0.5 μg/L, which further contributed to the disturbance of pathways in infectious diseases and cancers. Notably, TBP and TIP had higher immunosuppressive effects than TCP, which might lead to uncontrolled infection and cancer. In terms of serum metabolic profiles, energy metabolism pathway of citrate cycle and amino acid metabolism pathways of valine, leucine, and isoleucine were also significantly affected. Integration of the metabolomic and transcriptomic data suggested that a 12-week trihalophenol exposure could prominently disturb the glutathione metabolism pathway, indicating the impaired antioxidation and detoxification abilities in liver. Moreover, the disorder of the intestinal flora could interfere with immune regulation and host metabolism. Seawater contains high levels of halides, which can increase the concentrations of bromide and iodide ions in coastal groundwater and surface water sources. Intrusion of seawater alters the chemistry of fresh water leading to the formation of additional brominated and iodinated disinfection byproducts (DBPs), many of which are cyto- and genotoxic to the mammalian cells, and have cancer risks to humans. In this study, effects of seawater intrusion on the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs), and haloacetic acids (HAAs) were investigated by spiking groundwater using 0.0-2.0% seawater (by volume) and liquid chlorine as disinfectant. The concentrations of bromide and iodide ions in groundwater (0.0% seawater) were 42.5 and non-detected (ND) μg/L respectively, which were increased up to 1100 and 2.1 μg/L respectively, following mixing with 2.0% seawater. The regulated THMs (THM4) were increased from 30.4 to 106.3 μg/L while iodinated THMs (I-THMs) were increased from 0.13 to 1.6 μg/L respectively due possibly to molecular substitution and additional pathways of THMs formation. Bromoform was increased from 0.5 to 94.3 μg/L while iodoform was increased from ND to 1.02 μg/L. HAAs were increased from 27.9 to 72.9 μg/L where tribromoacetic acid was increased from 2.0 to 43.7 μg/L. In 0.0% seawater, bromine incorporation factor (BIF) for THM4 and HAAs were 0.077 and 0.050 respectively, which were increased to 0.942 and 0.38 at 2% seawater respectively. For dihalogenated HAAs (X2AA) and trihalogenated HAAs (X3AA), BIF in 0.0% seawater were 0.098 and 0.14 respectively, which were increased to 0.863 and 0.924 for 2.0% seawater respectively. Mixing of 2.0 seawater increased the toxicity of THM4, HAAs and I-THMs by 4.2, 5.9 and 201.8 folds, respectively indicating the importance of reducing seawater intrusion into the freshwater sources. This study investigated the occurrence and transport of four isothiazolinone-type biocides from commercial products to wastewater treatment plants (influents, sludges, and effluents) and to natural emissaries (upstream and downstream the wastewater treatment plants) in Romania. All four biocides were determined in personal care and household products, with the highest concentration of 76.4 µg/L OIT (2-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one). For environmental samples, three of the four isothiazolinones were determined, CMI (5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one) being the prominent compound for water samples. The maximum concentration of 84.0 µg/L in influent, 122 µg/L upstream, and 144 µg/L downstream the wastewater treatment plants were obtained for CMI. Unlike water samples, in the sewage sludge samples, OIT proved to be the dominant compound, with concentration up to 5.80 µg/g d.w. The extremely high levels of isothiazolinone determined in different WWTPs from Romania may be due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation, during which a much larger amount of cleaning, hygiene, and personal care products was used. The isothiazolinone-type biocides were readily removed from the influents of the five WWTPs, with the mean removal rate up to 67.5%. The mean mass loading value for the targeted biocides based on influent was 20.4 μg/day/1000 people, while the average environmental emissions were 6.93 μg/day/1000 people for effluents. The results obtained for riverine water combine with statistical analysis showed that the anthropogenic activities are the major contamination sources of the surface waters. Preliminary ecological risk evaluation showed that BIT (1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one), OIT, and CMI could pose a very high risks to different aquatic species living in the receiving aquatic environments.

Aromatic halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) have received particular attention in recent years due to their high toxicity. However, most relevant researches at present focused merely on halo-monocyclic DBPs, while halo-polycyclic DBPs were scarcely explored. In this study, a new group of halo-bicyclic DBPs termed as halonaphthoquinones (HNQs) was systematically studied. By coupling with vacuum centrifugal concentrator, a SPE-UPLC-MS/MS method with high accuracy and sensitivity was developed to detect five semi-volatile HNQs in drinking water, which achieved the detection limits in the range of 0.05-0.24 ng/L. Five HNQs were identified using this method with 100% detection frequency at concentrations up to 136.7 ng/L in drinking water originated from seven water treatment plants. The cytotoxicity of the five tested HNQs in CHO-K1 cells (IC 50 from 3.17 to 13.18 μM) was comparable to the most toxic known carbonaceous DBP in drinking water, iodoacetic acid (IC 50 =2.95 μM). Meanwhile, the cytotoxicity of five tested HNQs were also higher than 2,6-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone (IC 50 =21.73 μM) which is hundreds to thousands of times more toxic than regulated DBPs, indicating the significant toxicity risk of HNQ DBPs. To the best of our knowledge, this study presents the first analytical method for analysis of HNQ DBPs, and the first set of data on the occurrence and cytotoxicity of HNQ DBPs in drinking water. In this study, the dissolved organic matter (DOM) profiles of water samples from a water source in northeastern China were analyzed by high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), and its changes after chlorination were investigated. The results showed that lignin substances accounted for a significant proportion in DOM and chlorinated products and were the main precursors of disinfection by-products (DBPs). During disinfection, macromolecular DOM was transformed into small molecules, and lignin substances have the most obvious and complex changes in reaction. Two lignin monomers 4-propylphenol (4PP) and 4-propylguaiacol (4PG) were used as model compounds to study their reaction kinetics and degradation pathways during disinfection. The degradation of both lignin monomers conformed to pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics, and the reaction rate constant of 4PG was higher than that of 4PP. The effects of chlorine dosage, pH and temperature on the degradation reaction kinetics of two lignin monomers were investigated. The degradation rates of 4PP and 4PG increased with increasing chlorine dosage, pH and temperature. Iodine is a naturally-occurring halogen in natural waters generally present in concentrations between 0.5 and 100 µg L -1 . During oxidative drinking water treatment, iodine-containing disinfection by-products (I-DBPs) can be formed. The formation of I-DBPs was mostly associated to taste and odor issues in the produced tap water but has become a potential health problem more recently due to the generally more toxic character of I-DBPs compared to their chlorinated and brominated analogues. This paper is a systematic and critical review on the reactivity of iodide and on the most common intermediate reactive iodine species HOI. The first step of oxidation of I - to HOI is rapid for most oxidants (apparent second-order rate constant, k app > 10 3  M -1 s -1 at pH 7). The reactivity of hypoiodous acid with inorganic and organic compounds appears to be intermediate between chlorine and bromine. The life times of HOI during oxidative treatment determines the extent of the formation of I-DBPs. Based on this assessment, chloramine, chlorine dioxide and permanganate are of the highest concern when treating iodide-containing waters. The conditions for the formation of iodo-organic compounds are also critically reviewed. From an evaluation of I-DBPs in more than 650 drinking waters, it can be concluded that one third show low levels of I-THMs (<1 µg L -1 ), and 18% exhibit concentrations > 10 µg L -1 . The most frequently detected I-THM is CHCl 2 I followed by CHBrClI. More polar I-DBPs, iodoacetic acid in particular, have been reviewed as well. Finally, the transformation of iodide to iodate, a safe iodine-derived end-product, has been proposed to mitigate the formation of I-DBPs in drinking water processes. For this purpose a pre-oxidation step with either ozone or ferrate(VI) to completely oxidize iodide to iodate is an efficient process. Chlorinated halobenzoquinones (HBQs) widely exist in drinking water as emerging disinfection byproducts (DBPs), which have attracted significant attention due to their wide occurrence and high toxicity. In this study, the formation of chlorinated HBQs from the three free aromatic amino acids, tryptophan (Trp), tyrosine (Tyr) and phenylalanine (Phe), during chlorination was investigated, the formation pathways of chlorinated HBQs were explained based on the detected intermediates and influence factors. The results revealed that four chlorinated HBQs, including 2,6-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone (2,6-DCBQ), 2,3,5-trichloro-1,4-benzoquinone, 2,3,5,6-tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone and 2,6-dichloro-3-methyl-1,4-benzonquinone, were formed in chlorination of the three free aromatic amino acids, and 2,6-DCBQ was the dominant species among the formed chlorinated HBQs. Of the three free aromatic amino acids, Trp and Tyr presented relatively high yields of chlorinated HBQs than Phe. Moreover, ten intermediates were successfully detected (e.g., N,2-dichloroaniline from Trp, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol from Tyr) according to the isotope and fragment information obtained using high resolution mass spectrometry. The formation pathways of chlorinated HBQs from Trp and Tyr were proposed to include electrophilic addition, electrophilic substitution, oxidation, deacidification and dehydration reaction, and further validated using theoretical calculation. During chlorination of reclaimed water, the dose of chlorine used can influence the formation of chlorinated disinfection by-products (Cl-DBPs). We used non-targeted screening by Orbitrap mass spectrometry to identify Cl-DBPs in samples of chlorinated reclaimed water, and found that chlorination was likely to form slightly oxidized unsaturated aliphatic compounds and polycyclic aromatic compounds. Increasing the chlorine dose increased the proportion of polycyclic aromatic Cl-DBPs containing one chlorine atom (Cl 1 -DBPs) and highly oxidized unsaturated aliphatic Cl-DBPs containing two chlorine atoms (Cl 2 -DBPs). In addition, increasing the chlorine dose first decreased and then increased the proportion of Cl 1 -DBPs with aromatic index values >0.5 and increased the proportion of Cl 2 -DBPs with aromatic index values <0.5. Increasing the chlorine dose increased double bond equivalent minus oxygen values of Cl 1 -DBPs and decreased the double bond equivalent minus oxygen values of Cl 2 -DBPs, while the nominal oxidant state of carbon decreased for Cl 1 -DBPs and increased for Cl 2 -DBPs. In considering the possible precursors of Cl-DBPs and their reaction pathways, substitution reactions occurred more readily with aliphatic compounds and addition reactions occurred more readily with aromatic precursors. When the chlorine dose is increased, more Cl 2 -DBPs may be formed by substitution. Cupric oxide (CuO) is able to catalyze the reactions among disinfectant, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and bromide (Br - ) in copper pipes, which may deteriorate the water quality. This study aimed to investigate the metabonomic and transcriptomic modulations of HepG2 cells caused by the CuO-catalyzed formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) from EPS. The presence of CuO favored the substitution reactions of chlorine and bromine with EPS, inducing a higher content of total organic halogen (TOX). In addition, DBPs were shifted from chlorinated species to brominated species. A total of 182 differential metabolites (DMs) and 437 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, which were jointly involved in 38 KEGG pathways. Topology analysis indicates that glycerophospholipid and purine metabolism were disturbed most obviously. During glycerophospholipid metabolism, the differential expression of genes GPATs, AGPATs, LPINs and DGKs impacted the conversion of glycerol-3-phosphate to 2-diacyl-sn-glycerol, which further affected the conversion among phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylserine and phosphocholines. During purine metabolism, it was mainly the differential expression of genes POLRs, RPAs, RPBs, RPCs, ENTPDs and CDs that impacted the transformation of RNA into guanine-, xanthosine-, inosine- and adenosine monophosphate, which were further successively transformed into their corresponding nucleosides and purines. The early months of the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated shutdowns disrupted many aspects of daily life and thus caused changes in the use and disposal of many types of chemicals. While records of sales, prescriptions, drug overdoses, and so forth provide data about specific chemical uses during this time, wastewater and sewage sludge analysis can provide a more comprehensive overview of chemical changes within a region. We analyzed primary sludge from a wastewater-treatment plant in Connecticut, USA, collected March 19 to June 30, 2020. This time period encompassed the first wave of the pandemic, the initial statewide stay at home order, and the first phase of reopening. We used liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry and targeted and suspect screening strategies to identify 78 chemicals of interest, which included pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs, disinfectants, ultraviolet (UV) filters, and others. We analyzed trends over time for the identified chemicals using linear trend analyses and multivariate comparisons (p < 0.05). We found trends related directly to the pandemic (e.g., hydroxychloroquine, a drug publicized for its potential to treat COVID-19, had elevated concentrations in the week following the implementation of the US Emergency Use Authorization), as well as evidence for seasonal changes in chemical use (e.g., increases for three UV-filter compounds). Though wastewater surveillance during the pandemic has largely focused on measuring severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 RNA concentrations, chemical analysis can also show trends that are important for revealing the public and environmental health effects of the pandemic. Although being successfully applied all over the world for more than 100 years water disinfection by means of chlorination possesses certain drawbacks, first of all formation of hazardous disinfection by-products (DBP). Aromatic halogenated DBPs significantly contribute to the total organic halogen and developmental toxicity of chlorinated water. The present study deals with investigation of possible substitution of one halogen for another in aromatic substrates in conditions of aqueous chlorination/bromination. The reaction showed high yields especially in case of substrates with proper position of an activating group in the aromatic ring. Thus, ipso-substitution of iodine by chlorine is the main process of aqueous chlorination of para-iodoanisole. Oxidation of the eliminating I + ions into non-reactive IO 3 - species facilitates the substitution. Oxidation of eliminating Br + is not so easy while being highly reactive it attacks initial substrates forming polybrominated products. Substitution of iodine and bromine by chlorine may also involve migration of electrophilic species inside the aromatic ring resulting in larger number of isomeric DBPs. Substitution of chlorine by bromine in aromatic substrates during aqueous bromination is not so pronounced as substitution of bromine by chlorine in aqueous chlorination due to higher electronegativity of chlorine atom. The frequency of surface disinfectant use has increased over the last several years in public settings such as schools, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although these products are important for infection control and prevention, their increased use may intensify the exposure to both persons applying the disinfection product as well as bystanders. Safety assessments have demonstrated that these products, when used as intended, are considered safe for use and effective; however, point-of-contact effects (such as respiratory or dermal irritation) may still occur. Additionally, relative exposures may vary significantly due to the wide variation in disinfectant formulation and application methods. Quantitative estimations of exposures to two commonly used active ingredients, quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) and ethanol, are not well characterized during product use and application scenarios. To assess the potential for health risks attributable to increased use in classroom settings, as well as to quantitatively evaluate the potential exposure to both ethanol and QACs, student and adult bystander surface and air measurements were collected in a K-8 school setting in Ohio, United States, over a three-day period. Direct-reading instruments were utilized to collect real-time air samples that characterized mass fraction concentrations following the use of the QAC- and ethanol-based disinfectants. Furthermore, surface and air sampling of microbial species were conducted to establish the overall bioburden and effectiveness of each disinfectant to inform the comparative risk and health effect impacts from the tested products use scenario. Both tested products were approximately equally effective at reducing bioburdens on desk surfaces. In some classrooms, concentrations of QAC congeners were significantly increased on desk surfaces following the application of the disinfectant spray; however, the magnitude of the change in concentration was small. Ethanol was not measured on surfaces due to its volatility. Airborne concentrations increased immediately following spray of each disinfectant product but rapidly returned to baseline. Each of the QAC congeners listed in the product safety data sheets were detected and measurable on desk surfaces; however, air concentrations were generally below the limit of detection. The 15-min time-weighted averages (TWAs) of both QACs and ethanol in the air were below respective health effects benchmarks, and therefore, the negative impact on health outcomes is considered to be minimal from short-term, repeated use of ethanol- or QAC-based spray products in a school setting when the products are used as directed., (© 2022 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Background: By-products are formed when disinfectants react with organic matter in source water. The most common class of disinfection by-products, trihalomethanes (THMs), have been linked to bladder cancer. Several studies have shown exposure-response associations with THMs in drinking water and bladder cancer risk. Few epidemiologic studies have evaluated gene-environment interactions for total THMs (TTHMs) with known bladder cancer susceptibility variants., Objectives: In this study, we investigated the combined effect on bladder cancer risk contributed by TTHMs, bladder cancer susceptibility variants identified through genome-wide association studies, and variants in several candidate genes., Methods: We analyzed data from two large case-control studies-the New England Bladder Cancer Study ( n / n = 989 cases/1,162 controls), a population-based study, and the Spanish Bladder Cancer Study ( n / n = 706 cases/772 controls), a hospital-based study. Because of differences in exposure distributions and metrics, we estimated effects of THMs and genetic variants within each study separately using adjusted logistic regression models to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) with and without interaction terms, and then combined the results using meta-analysis., Results: Of the 16 loci showing strong evidence of association with bladder cancer, rs907611 at 11p15.5 [leukocyte-specific protein 1 ( LSP1 region)] showed the strongest associations in the highest exposure category in each study, with evidence of interaction in both studies and in meta-analysis. In the highest exposure category, we observed OR = 1.66 (95% CI: 1.17, 2.34, p -trend = 0.005 ) for those with the rs907611-GG genotype and p -interaction = 0.02 . No other genetic variants tested showed consistent evidence of interaction., Discussion: We found novel suggestive evidence for a multiplicative interaction between a putative bladder carcinogen, TTHMs, and genotypes of rs907611. The widely used antidiabetic drug metformin has become an emerging contaminant of water systems. In a prior study, we demonstrated the marked mammalian toxicity of the disinfection-derived byproducts (DBPs) Y (yellow, C 4 H 6 ClN 5 ) and C (colorless, C 4 H 6 ClN 3 ), and here assess the distribution, formation, and ecotoxicity of these in Chinese urban water systems. A national tap water assessment showed that metformin and C concentrations were higher in large, dense urban areas and surface water sources than in sparsely populated areas and groundwater sources. Water types' analysis clearly showed that C derived from chlorination of metformin-contaminated water (up to 4308.5 ng/L) circulated from domestic water (0.7-9.7 ng/L) via sewage (2.3 ng/L in effluent) to surface water (0.6-3.5 ng/L). Simulated disinfection and aqueous stability results systematically showed rapid formation and 24 h stability of both byproducts, indicating high exposure odds for water users. Both byproducts showed clear but distinct toxic effects on the growth (72 h IC 50 , 0.6 mg/L for Y and 4.4 mg/L for C) and photosynthesis of the microalgae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata at milligram levels. Combinedly, our work reveals that metformin byproducts have been disseminated to urban water cycle and contaminated tap water, increasing potential toxic risk for drinking water. Levels of booster biocides (Irgarol, diuron, chlorothalonil, dichlofluanid and DCOIT), organotins (TBT, DBT, MBT, TPhT, DPhT and MPhT) and antifouling paint particles (APPs) were assessed in sediments of sites under the influence of maritime activities along the coastal zone of the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico. Imposex incidence and organotin levels were also evaluated in seven caenogastropod species. The incidence of imposex was detected in five species from sites nearby fishing harbors and marinas, including the first reports to Gemophos tinctus and Melongena bispinosa. Butyltins levels were higher than phenyltins in gastropod tissues, sediments, and APPs. Regarding booster biocides, chlorothalonil was the most frequently detected compound and DCOIT was the most abundant biocide in sediments. DCOIT levels were registered in APPs from fishing harbors and marina areas. In addition, the highest levels of TBT, Irgarol, diuron and DCOIT exceeded the threshold limits set by international sediment quality guidelines, indicating that toxic effects could be expected in some of the studied areas, thus being a potential threat to marine life. Comprehensive enrichment of contaminants in drinking water is an essential step for accurately determining exposure levels of contaminants and testing their biological effects. Traditional methods using a single absorbent for enriching contaminants in water might not be adequate for complicated matrices with different physical-chemical profiles. To examine this hypothesis, we used an integrated enrichment system that had three sequential stages-XAD-2 resin, poly (styrene-divinylbenzene) and activated charcoal to capture organic pollutants and disinfection by-products (DBPs) from drinking water in Shanghai. Un-adsorbed Organic Compounds in Eluates (UOCEs) named UOCEs-A, -B, and-C following each adsorption stage were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to evaluate adsorption efficiency of the enrichment system. Meanwhile, biological effects such as cytotoxicity, effects on reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and glutathione (GSH) depletion were determined in human LO2 cells to identify potential adverse effects on exposure to low dose contaminants. We found that poly-styrene-divinylbenzene (PS-DVB) and activated charcoal (AC) could still partly collect UOCEs-A and-B that the upper adsorption column incompletely captured, and that potential carcinogens like 2-naphthamine were present in all eluates. UOCEs-A at (1-4000), UOCEs-B at (1000-4000), and UOCEs-C at (2400-4000) folds of the actual concentrations had significant cytotoxicity to LO2 cells. Additionally, ROS and GSH change in cells treated with UOCEs indicated the potential for long-term effects of exposure to some mixtures of contaminants such as DBPs at low doses. These results suggested that an enriching system with a single adsorbent would underestimate the exposure level of pollutants and the biological effects of organic pollutants from drinking water. Corrosion inhibitors used to reduce pipe corrosion can alter the physical structure and biochemical components of the biofilm in premise plumbing systems. We studied the effects of corrosion inhibitors on chlorine decay and associated disinfection by-products (DBPs) formation by biofilms grown with simulated drinking water amended with silicate, phosphate, and the phosphate blends. Experiments were conducted with either intact biofilms or biofilm materials dispersed in solution during sonication (referred to as biomass). While there was no significant difference in chlorine decay among biomass from different biofilms, biomass from the phosphate blend biofilm showed the lowest trihalomethane (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) formation. The chlorine decay rate constants from the biofilm experiment were ranked as: phosphate blends > phosphate ≈ groundwater (GW) > silicate. The kinetics of chlorine decay and formation of DBPs were successfully described by pseudo-first-order kinetics. These fitting parameters were used to predict the DBPs formation in a realistic premise plumbing system. The results showed that biofilm-derived THMs and HAAs increased with increasing chlorine concentration, while THMs and HAAs first increased and then stabilized to a maximum with increasing biofilm total organic carbon (TOC) concentration. In general, the biofilms grown with phosphate-based corrosion inhibitors resulted in lower DBPs formation yield but higher bacterial release, which could potentially increase the risk of user exposure to opportunistic pathogens in drinking water. Disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water distribution systems are affected by multi-factors, such as basic water quality parameters, microbial community structures, and residual organic pollutants that cannot be removed by the water treatment process. The relationship between the above-mentioned factors that forms a complicated network structure, which causes the dominating factor that affects DBPs formation unclear. This study investigated the water quality in regional tap water in January-February 2021. Trihalomethanes were determined using P&T-GC-MS, and antibiotics and nitrosamines were determined using UPLC-MS/MS. Microbial communities were determined using Illumina 16S rRNA gene sequencing. A Bayesian network was constructed to evaluate the intercorrelation between the factors. Three species of trihalomethanes, six species of nitrosamines, 23 types of antibiotics, and 236 OTUs were detected in the tap water. The mass concentrations of trihalomethanes, nitrosamines, and antibiotics were 18.33-32.09 μg·L -1 , 13.08-53.50 ng·L -1 , and 47.92-210.33 ng·L -1 , respectively. The dominant microbial orders were Rhizobiales and Caulobacterales. Based on the Bayesian-network inference, tetracycline, sulfonamides, and macrocyclic antibiotics were precursors of trihalomethanes, whereas tetracyclines were the nitrosamine precursor. The abundances of Caulobacterales and Corynebacteriales were both affected by antibiotics and associated with DBPs formation. The extracellular polymeric substances of these bacteria were highly suspected to be important DBPs precursors. The results of the proposed project revealed the internal relationship between multi-water-quality parameters and DBPs formation, which could provide a theoretical support to guarantee the safety of drinking water.

Tannic acid is ubiquitously present in various simulated and real water sources and in wastewater. Various chlorinated disinfection byproducts (Cl-DBPs) are generated via reactions with tannic acid during disinfection with chlorine. We used high-resolution mass spectrometry in combination with our self-developed halogen extraction code to selectively identify Cl-DBPs. Our strategy enabled successful detection of 35 Cl-DBP formulas formed by chlorination of tannic acid, and we identified 26 of these structures. The structures of 17 novel Cl-DBPs are firstly reported here. The reaction pathways of these Cl-DBPs were tentatively proposed. These Cl-DBPs are likely to be generated during chlorination at various chlorine doses, from 0.0 to 10.0 mg-Cl 2 /L, and 14 of the 26 Cl-DBPs were detected in simulated drinking water, which implies a relatively high probability of incidence. Quantitative structure-activity relationship toxicity analyses predicted that most of these Cl-DBPs would exhibit much higher acute toxicity than the common DBPs trichloromethane and monochloroacetic acid and that some of these compounds would induce developmental toxicity and be mutagenic, which further emphasizes that these Cl-DBPs should raise concerns. There exist two common processes in fishery culture, i.e. antibiotic addition to reduce disease in fishery, and chlorination disinfection to inhibit infectious pathogenic microorganisms. However, antibiotic residues might play important reverse side roles for both aquaculture water pollution and potential formation of chlorination side products. Herein, the transformation behaviour, intermediates analyses and conversion pathway of antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and potential generation of halogenated acetic acids (HAAs) in the process of chlorination in fishery water were examined, and the results revealed that the decomposing of SMX satisfied a pseudo first-order kinetic equation. Both the addition of available chlorine and high temperature had affirmative influences on the decontamination of SMX and production of HAAs, and the near-neutral pHs promoted the removal of SMX and generation of HAAs. Br - was favorable for the removal of SMX and yields of brominated acetic acids (Br-AAs). Based on the identified intermediate products, the transformation path of SMX in chlorination process was propounded, to wit, the C-S and S-N bonds in the SMX molecules were firstly cracked, and the primeval intermediate groups are then transformed to form chloroanilines, chlorophenols, etc., and subsequently, chlorophenols were chlorinated and ring-opened to generate toxic HAAs. Although disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water have been suggested as a cancer causing factor, the causative compounds have not yet been clarified. In this study, we used liquid chromatography quadrupole-time-of-flight spectrometry (LC-QTOF MS) to identify the unknown disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water produced from Taihu Lake source water, which is known as a convergence point for the anthropogenic pollutants discharged from intensive industrial activities in the surrounding regions. In total, 91 formulas of DBPs were discovered through LC-QTOF MS nontarget screen, 81 of which have not yet been reported. Among the 91 molecules, 56 only contain bromine, 15 only contain chlorine and 20 DBPs have both bromine and chlorine atoms. Finally, five DBPs including 2,4,6-tribromophenol, 2,6-dibromo-4-chlorophenol, 2,6-dichloro-4-bromophenol, 4-bromo-2,6-di-tert-butylphenol and 3,6-dibromocarbazole were confirmed using standards. The former three compounds mainly formed in the predisinfection step (maximum concentration, 0.2-2.6 µg/L), while the latter two formed in the disinfection step (maximum concentration, 18.2-33.6 ng/L). In addition, 19 possible precursors of the discovered DBPs were detected, with the aromatic compounds being a major group. 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol as the precursor of 4-bromo-2,6-di-tert-butylphenol was confirmed with standard, with a concentration of 20.3 µg/L in raw water. The distribution of antifouling organotin compounds (OTCs) and booster biocides in surface sediments of Samsun Port (Black Sea, Turkey) in September 2014 was investigated by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) method. The total organotin concentrations ranged from <1.0 to 669.6 ng/g, dw. Among the studied booster biocides, Diuron (<1.0-11.28 ng/g) was found in 70.58% of the investigated sediments, while Irgarol (<1.0-26.53 ng/g) was detected in two stations. Traces of fresh input organotin and high Irgarol were found at the park/repairment points of the port. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) showed that sediment characteristic types and Total Organic Carbon (TOC) were the main relevant parameters in the accumulation of antifouling contamination in the Port area. In comparison with several types of environmental sediment quality criteria, Samsun Port is highly polluted area. In order to reveal the pollution characteristics and risk levels of DBPs in typical drinking water sources in Wuhan under the COVID-19 pandemic, 26 sampling sites were selected in typical drinking water sources in Wuhan. N,N -diethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine spectrophotometry and gas chromatograph-micro-cell electron capture detector (GC-μECD) methods were used to detect residual chlorine disinfectants and DBPs in water, respectively, and their health and ecology risks were assessed. The results showed that free chlorine or total residual chlorine were detected in 16 of the 26 water samples, and the maximum concentration was 0.04 mg·L -1 , which exceeded the limit of the surface water standard in China. The concentration of residual chlorine was higher in sampling sites near the outfall of a municipal sewage plant. There were 34 types of DBPs measured in 10 sampling sites, and 24 types of substances were detected with the detection rate of 10.00%-100.00%. The ρ (total DBPs) was in the range of 0.11-104.73 μg·L -1 , with an average value of 7.26 μg·L -1 . The concentration of chloroform was the highest among all the DBPs, ranging from 9.98 μg·L -1 to 11.15 μg·L -1 , with an average value of 10.47 μg·L -1 . The concentration of 2-bromo-2-iodoacetamide was the lowest, ranging from ND-0.11 μg·L -1 , with an average value of 0.01 μg·L -1 . The overall detection level of the DBPs area was low in this study area, and the result of the health risk assessment showed that the DBPs had no carcinogenic or non-carcinogenic health risks to human body. However, the results of the ecological risk assessment showed that chloroform presented a high ecological risk to aquatic organisms.

Distributions of halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in a two-source water distribution system (WDS) with enhanced chlorination were investigated. The WDS was divided into different sub-service areas based on different electrical conductivity of two water sources. Results clearly show that the principal halogenated DBPs were trihalomethanes (THMs) (5.06-82.69 μg/L), varying within the concentration range as 2-5 times as the levels of haloacetic acids (HAAs) (1.41-61.48 μg/L) and haloacetonitriles (HANs) (0.21-15.13 μg/L). Different water sources, treatment trains, and enhanced chlorination within the WDS had significant effects on seasonal and spatial variations of the DBP distributions over water conveyance. THM and HAA formation followed the sequence of summer > autumn > winter > spring. On the other hand, the DBP spatial distributions were visualized using the ArcGIS enabled Inverse distance weighting technique. The superposition of different DBP spatial distributions allowed for the identification of the high-risk THMs and HAAs areas based on the average values of THMs (27.49 μg/L) and HAAs (14.06 μg/L). Variations in iodinated aromatic disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in the presence of I - and organic compounds as a function of reaction time in different molar ratios (MRs) of HOCl:NH 3 -N were investigated. Up to 17 kinds of iodinated aromatic DBPs were identified in the breakpoint chlorination of iodide (I - )/organic (phenol, bisphenol S (BPS) and p-nitrophenol (p-NP)) systems, and the possible pathways for the formation of iodinated aromatic DBPs were proposed. The reaction pathways include HOCl/HOI electrophilic substitution and oxidation, while the dominant iodinated DBPs were quantified. In the I - /phenol system (pH = 7.0), the sum of the concentrations of four iodinated aliphatic DBPs ranged from 0.32 to 1.04 μM (triiodomethane (TIM), dichloroiodomethane (DCIM), diiodochloromethane (DICM) and monoiodoacetic acid (MIAA)), while the concentration of 4-iodophenol ranged from 2.99 to 12.87 μM. The concentration of iodinated aromatic DBPs remained stable with an MR = 1:1. When the MR was 6:1, iodinated aromatic DBPs decreased with increasing reaction time, in which the main disinfectant in the system was active chlorine. This study proposed the formation mechanism of iodinated aromatic DBPs during the breakpoint chlorination of iodide-containing water. Wood-boring invertebrates rapidly destroy marine timbers and wooden coastal infrastructure, causing billions of dollars of damage around the globe every year. As treatments of wood with broad spectrum biocides, such as creosote and chromated copper arsenate (CCA), are now restricted in marine use by legislation, naturally durable timber species and novel preservation methods of wood are required. These methods undergo testing in order to meet regulatory standards, such as the European standard for testing wood preservatives against marine borers, EN 275. Initial investigation of durable timbers species or wood preservative treatments can be achieved quickly and inexpensively through laboratory testing, which offers many advantages over marine field trials that are typically costly, long-term endeavours. Many species of Limnoria (gribble) are marine wood-boring crustaceans. Limnoria are ideal for use in laboratory testing of biodegradation of wood by marine wood-borers, due to the practicality of rearing them in aquaria and the ease of measuring their feeding rates on wood. Herein, we outline a standardizable laboratory test for assessing wood biodegradation using gribble.

Inhalation exposure to polyhexamethylene guanidine phosphate (PHMG-P), one of the primary biocides used in humidifier disinfectants, caused a fatal pulmonary disease in Korea. Pregnant women were also exposed to PHMG-P, and subsequent studies showed that PHMG-P inhalation during pregnancy adversely affects their health and embryo-fetal development. However, the postnatal developmental effects after birth on prenatally PHMG-P-exposed offspring have not yet been investigated. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to examine the postnatal development of prenatally PHMG-P-exposed offspring. Pregnant rats (22 or 24 females per group) were exposed to PHMG-P during pregnancy in a whole-body inhalation chamber at the target concentrations of 0, 0.14, 1.60, and 3.20 mg/m 3 . After parturition, the prenatally exposed offspring were transferred to non-exposed surrogate mothers to minimize the secondary effects of severe maternal toxicities. Postnatal development of offspring was then examined with a modified extended one-generation reproductive toxicity study design. At 3.20 mg/m 3 PHMG-P, increased perinatal death rates and decreased viability index (postnatal survival of offspring between birth and postnatal day 4) were observed. In addition, F1 offspring had lower body weight at birth that persisted throughout the study. PHMG-P-exposed pregnant rats also had severe systemic toxicities and increased gestation period. At 1.60 mg/m 3 PHMG-P, a decreased viability index was also observed with systemic toxicities of PHMG-P-exposed pregnant rats. Background: Antimicrobial agents are recommended for disinfection of the cavity following mechanical dental caries removal prior to application of restorative material. There is limited information about stabilized Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2) as a cavity disinfectant., Objectives: The objective of this study is to determine the antimicrobial activity and effect on dentin bond strength of ClO 2 compared to chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX), sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and Ethanolic Propolis Extract (EPE)., Methods: Antimicrobial activities of agents against oral pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Candida albicans, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and analyses of EPE were examined. Seventyfive mandibular third molars were sectioned, prepared and divided into five subgroups (n=15/group). Cavity disinfectants (2% CHX, 2.5% NaOCl, 30% EPE, 0.3% ClO 2 ) were applied to etched dentin prior to adhesive and composite build-up. Shear bond strength (SBS) was evaluated with a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. The SBS data were analyzed with One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post-hoc test (p <0.05). The failure modes were evaluated with a stereomicroscope., Results: It was determined that the compared disinfectants were showed different inhibition zone values against oral pathogens. ClO 2 exhibited the highest antimicrobial activity, followed by CHX, NaOCI and EPE, respectively. No statistically significant difference was observed in the SBS values between the disinfectant treated groups and control group. Monitoring of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in water supply system is important to ensure safety of drinking water. Yet it is a laborious job. Developing predictive DBPs models using simple and easy parameters is a promising way. Yet current models could not be well applied into practice because of the improper dataset (e.g. not from real tap water) they used or involving the parameters that are difficult to measure or require expensive instruments. In this study, four simple and easy water quality parameters (temperature, pH, UVA 254 and Cl 2 ) were used to predict trihalomethane (THMs) occurrence in tap water. Linear/log linear regression models (LRM) and radial basis function artificial neural network (RBF ANN) were adopted to develop the THMs models. 64 observations from tap water samples were used to develop and test models. Results showed that only one or two parameters entered LRMs, and their prediction ability was very limited (testing datasets: N 25  = 46-69%, r p  = 0.334-0.459). Different from LRM, the prediction accuracy of RBF ANNs developed with pH, temperature, UVA 254 and Cl 2 can be improved continuously by tweaking the maximum number of neuron (MN) and Gaussian function spread (S) until it reached best. The optimum RBF ANNs of T-THMs, TCM and BDCM were obtained when setting MN = 20, S = 100, 100.1 and 60, respectively, where the N 25 and r p values for testing datasets reached 85-92% and 0.813-0.886, respectively. Accurate predictions of THMs by RBF ANNs with these four simple and easy parameters paved an economic and convenient way for THMs monitoring in real water supply system., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. The disinfection of water for human consumption with chlorine or other compounds produces secondary reactions with the organic matter, generating undesirable disinfection by-products (DBPs). Among these are trihalomethanes (THMs), identified as carcinogenic compounds. This work determined the trihalomethanes concentration, both speciated and total, in treated water distributed and stored in tanks of residential condominiums of different social classes. THMs were quantified using static manual Headspace as preconcentration technique, injecting the vapor phase collected in a GC/FID. The results show that the water distributed to the homes already contains THMs, trichloromethane being the major compound. The Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) with 60 water samples showed that there is no significant distinction among samples of treated water distributed water and water stored in tanks. Disinfection by-products (DBPs) formed during water disinfection has drawn significant public concern due to its toxicity. Since the first discovery of the trihalomethanes in 1974, continued effort has been devoted on DBPs worldwide to investigate the formation mechanism, levels, toxicity and control measures in drinking water. This review summarizes the main achievements on DBP research in China, which included: (1) the investigation of known DBP occurrence in drinking water of China; (2) the enhanced removal of DBP precursor by water treatment process; (3) the disinfection optimization to minimize DBP formation; and (4) the identification of unknown DBPs in drinking water. Although the research of DBPs in China cover the whole formation process of DBPs, there is still a challenge in effectively controlling the drinking water quality risk induced by DBPs, an integrated research framework including chemistry, toxicology, engineering, and epidemiology is especially crucial., (Copyright © 2021. Haloacetaldehyde (HAL) is a type of disinfection byproduct (DBP) commonly detected in disinfected drinking water, and concerns toward its cytotoxic effects have promoted numerous efforts to control it. Given that household water treatment (HWT) process is a promising approach to polish drinking water quality and has been widely used by public, we herein evaluated the performances of two household heating devices (electric kettle and microwave oven) on the removals of three types of chlorinated haloacetaldehydes (Cl-HALs) under varying operating and water conditions. Results showed that the removals of HALs by boiling water to 100 °C were not very efficient (<20%) under automatic switch-off mode when chlorine was absent. The key mechanism responsible for Cl-HALs loss was likely volatilization because altering heating or cooling time did not enhance Cl-HALs' attenuations significantly. In contrast, Cl-HALs were readily transformed (>80%) when 1.0 mg/L chlorine was present without prolonging boiling time. Adding chlorine quencher (ascorbic acid) inhibited Cl-HALs' removals substantially, confirming that chlorine played a key role in the transformation process. The reactions between Cl-HALs and chlorine can be accelerated by raising water temperature and chlorine dosage. Stepwisely, monochloroacetaldehyde was transformed into dichloroacetaldehyde (DCAL), then DCAL was converted into trichloroacetaldehyde (TCAL), and eventually the C-C bond of TCAL was cleaved to form trichloromethane and formic acid. The study hence explains the differences on the removals of Cl-HALs between with and without adding chlorine and meanwhile identifies the limits of domestic heating devices in removing Cl-HALs from drinking water., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Maintaining a residual disinfectant/oxidant (e.g., chlorine and chlorine dioxide), is a generally used strategy to control microbial contaminants and bacterial regrowth in distribution systems. Secondarily oxidant, such as hypobromous acid (HOBr), can be formed during chlorination of bromide-containing waters. The decay of oxidants and formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) due to the interaction between oxidants and selected metal oxides were studied. Selected metal oxides generally enhanced the decay of these halogen-containing oxidants via three pathways: (1) catalytic disproportionation to yield an oxidized form of halogen (i.e., halate) and reduced form (halide for chlorine and bromine or chlorite for chlorine dioxide), (2) oxygen formation, and (3) oxidation of a metal in a reduced form (e.g., cuprous oxide) to a higher oxidation state. Cupric oxide (CuO) and nickel oxide (NiO) showed significantly strong abilities for the first pathway, and oxygen formation was a side reaction. Cuprous oxide can react with oxidants via the third pathway, while goethite was not involved in these reactions. The ability of CuO on catalytic disproportionation of HOBr remained stable up to four cycles. In chlorination process, bromate formation tends to be important (exceeding 10 µg/L) when initial bromide concentration is above 400 µg/L in the presence of dissolved organic matter. Increasing initial bromide concentrations increased the formation of DBPs and calculated cytotoxicity, and the maximum was observed at pH 8.6 during chlorination process. Disinfection by-products(DBPs) are secondary pollutants generated by the reaction of disinfectants with organic or inorganic precursors during drinking water disinfection. DBPs have received considerable global attention due to their carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic characteristics. Focusing on drinking water, this paper introduces the main classification and research history of DBPs, and then summarizes the concentration levels of common DBPs in drinking water, and DBPs regulatory compliance in global drinking water standards. Further, the control strategies for DBPs in drinking water, including source control, process control, DBPs removal and integrated control are introduced together with the advantages and disadvantages. Finally, a summary and review of the current level and future trends of DBPs research in China are presented with the proposed control strategies. On the one hand, when evaluating the control effect of a process or technology, the DBPs concentration and comprehensive toxicity should be considered; on the other hand, in order to realize the efficient control of DBPs in drinking water, the focus should be on the integrated methods coupling different DBPs control methods.

The raw water distribution systems (RWDSs) play key roles in urban water supply systems. The changes of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) precursors of trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetic acids (HAAs) and halogenated acetaldehydes (HALs) in the RWDS in Taihu Basin were investigated by formation potentials. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) method and 454-pyrosequencing were employed to study the variation of molecular characteristics of low molecular weight-dissolved organic matter (LMW-DOM) and microbial communities of pipeline biofilms respectively, which played crucial roles in the variation of DBPs precursors. The results showed that both DBPs precursors and the molecular characteristics of LMW-DOM in the RWDS had changed. Moreover, the LMW-DOM could be an indicator due to the good positive correlation with precursors of HAAs and HALs. Specifically, the LMW-DOM showed continuous accumulation in the RWDS. The LMW-DOM tended to possess higher m/z and more CH 2 or long alkyl chains while pre-chlorination controlled this trend. The LMW-DOM in the pre-chlorinated pipe section also possessed higher saturation. Additionally, lignins served as an important part of DBPs precursors and dominated the LMW-DOM. The microbial diversity decreased in the RWDS, and the abundance and diversity of the microbial community in the pre-chlorinated section were significantly lower than those in the no-chlorinated section. Finally, most DBPs precursors had positive correlation with dominant phylum and genus in RWDS. Enoxacin (ENO) is widespread in water because it is commonly used as a human and veterinary antibiotic. However, little effort has been dedicated to revealing the transformation mechanisms of ENO destruction using ClO 2 , especially within a water distribution system (WDS). To address this knowledge gap, the kinetics, byproducts, toxicity, and formation potential of halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) associated with ENO destruction using ClO 2 in a pilot-scale PE pipe was explored for the first time. Statistical analyses showed that the destruction efficiency of ENO in the pilot-scale PE pipe was lower than that in deionized water (DI water), and the reactions in DI water followed the second-order kinetic model. Furthermore, pH has a significant effect on the destruction of ENO, and the removal ratio increased at a higher pH. Additionally, increasing the flow rate elevated the ENO removal efficiency; however, the influence of flow velocity was limited to ENO destruction. The ENO removal rates within the diverse pipes exhibited the following order: stainless steel pipe < PE pipe < ductile iron pipe. Nine possible intermediates were identified, and those that were formed by piperazine group cleavage represented the major primary byproducts of the entire destruction process. Additionally, the ENO destruction in a pilot-scale PE pipe had minimal influence on halogenated DBPs and chlorite formation. Iron oxidation inevitably occurs in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) and can cause water quality problems such as increased turbidity and discoloration of tap water. Considering that chlorine disinfection is also widely used in DWDSs, the role of disinfectant and disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in iron oxidation should not be neglected. Interestingly, here the well-known deoxidizer ascorbic acid (VC), which is also a food additive, could induce the formation of Fe 3 O 4 besides FeOOH resulting in the color change from yellow to black in the presence of trichloroacetic acid (TCA, one of the most typical DBPs) and NaClO (disinfectant). The oxygen-containing functional groups in TCA and VC may bind Fe(II) to guide the crystal growth. Though the particles generated in the presence of TCA and NaClO together with VC had higher content Fe 3 O 4 which would be more difficult to suspend, once disturbance happened, these particles could increase the turbidity and color of water into higher value than the particles formed without VC and those generated in the absence of TCA and NaClO. Therefore, the deoxidizer VC may control "yellow water" without disinfectant, but may deteriorate the water quality under disinfection conditions., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V.
