161. Cross-sectional association between objective cognitive performance and perceived age-related gains and losses in cognition

Abstract

Objectives: Evidence linking subjective concerns about cognition with poorer objective cognitive performance is limited by reliance on unidimensional measures of self-perceptions of aging (SPA). We used the awareness of age-related change (AARC) construct to assess self-perception of both positive and negative age-related changes (AARC gains and losses). We tested whether AARC has greater utility in linking self-perceptions to objective cognition compared to well-established measures of self-perceptions of cognition and aging. We examined the associations of AARC with objective cognition, several psychological variables, and engagement in cognitive training. Design: Cross-sectional observational study. Participants: The sample comprised 6056 cognitively healthy participants (mean [SD] age = 66.0 [7.0] years); divided into subgroups representing middle, early old, and advanced old age. Measurements: We used an online cognitive battery and measures of global AARC, AARC specific to the cognitive domain, subjective cognitive change, attitudes toward own aging (ATOA), subjective age (SA), depression, anxiety, self-rated health (SRH). Results: Scores on the AARC measures showed stronger associations with objective cognition compared to other measures of self-perceptions of cognition and aging. Higher AARC gains were associated with poorer cognition in middle and early old age. Higher AARC losses and poorer cognition were associated across all subgroups. Higher AARC losses were associated with greater depression and anxiety, more negative SPA, poorer SRH, but not with engagement in cognitive training. Conclusions: Assessing both positive and negative self-perceptions of cognition and aging is important when linking self-perceptions to cognitive functioning. Objective cognition is one of the many variables - alongside psychological variables - related to perceived cognitive losses.

This work isaimed at studying the performance parameters under STC, EL images and dark I-V curves to explore the output characteristic of polycrystallinemodules based on the faults in thecase of electrical overload and mechanical stress. The resultsshow that three defective bypass didoes mainly affected the open circuit voltage, voltage at MPP, power at MPP, current at MPP except theshort circuit current. Meanwhile, there isnoEL signal inthefaulty modulewith threedefective bypass diodes. When the cracks appear at the beginning, it causes small effect on the performance degradation of PV module. The inflection point from dark I-V curves under electrical overload drops significantly than mechanical stress, which causes more power losses.

Abstract

Abstract Existing evidence suggests that individuals’ subjective experience of cognitive decline may be a risk state for dementia. However, whether self-awareness of positive changes confer cognitive protection is unknown. We examined the extent to which awareness of positive (AARC gains) and negative (AARC losses) age-related changes explains variability in objective cognitive performance in a sample of 6,231 UK residents (Mean age= 66.1 years, 75.9% women) without cognitive impairment. We tested a structural equation model with AARC gains and losses as predictors of cognitive performance and depressive symptoms as a mediator of the association of AARC losses with cognitive performance. The model fit the data well. The correlation between AARC gains and losses was negligible, yet higher levels of both AARC gains and losses predicted poorer cognitive scores. Hence, higher AARC gains did not confer cognitive protection. This unexpected pattern of results underscores the complexity of mapping individuals’ awareness onto objective outcomes.

Abstract

A severe obstacle for the routine use of crystal plasticity models is the effort associated with determining their constitutive parameters. Obtaining these parameters usually requires time-consuming micromechanical tests that allow probing of individual grains. In this study, a novel, computationally efficient, and fully automated approach is introduced which allows the identification of constitutive parameters from macroscopic tests. The approach presented here uses the response surface methodology together with a genetic algorithm to determine an optimal set of parameters. It is especially suited for complex models with a large number of parameters. The proposed approach also helps to develop a quantitative and thorough understanding of the relative influence of the different constitutive parameters and their interactions. Such general insights into parameter relations in complex models can be used to improve constitutive laws and reduce redundancy in parameter sets. The merits of the methodology are demonstrated on the examples of a dislocation-density-based crystal plasticity model for bcc steel, a phenomenological crystal plasticity model for fcc copper, and a phenomenological crystal plasticity model incorporating twinning deformation for hcp magnesium. The approach proposed is, however, model-independent and can be also used to identify parameters of, for instance, fatigue, creep and damage models. The method has been implemented into the Düsseldorf Advanced Material Simulation Kit (DAMASK) and is available as free and open-source software. 189. Boxing training for patients with Parkinson disease: a case series

Abstract

Background and Purpose. A nontraditional form of exercise recently applied for patients with Parkinson disease (PD) is boxing training. The primary purpose of this case series is to describe the effects of disease severity and duration of boxing training (short term and long term) on changes in balance, mobility, and quality of life for patients with mild or moderate to severe PD. The feasibility and safety of the boxing training program also were assessed. Case Descriptions. Six patients with idiopathic PD attended 24 to 36 boxing training sessions for 12 weeks, with the option of continuing the training for an additional 24 weeks (a seventh patient attended sessions for only 4 weeks). The 90-minute sessions included boxing drills and traditional stretching, strengthening, and endurance exercises. Outcomes were tested at the baseline and after 12, 24, and 36 weeks of boxing sessions (12-, 24-, and 36-week tests). The outcome measures were the Functional Reach Test, Berg Balance Scale, Activities-specific Balance Confidence Scale, Timed 'Up & Go' Test, Six-Minute Walk Test, gait speed, cadence, stride length, step width, activities of daily living and motor examination subscales of the Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale, and Parkinson Disease Quality of Life Scale. Outcomes. six patients completed all phases of the case series, showed improvements on at least 5 of the 12 outcome measures over the baseline at the 12-week test, and showed continued improvements at the 24- and 36-week tests. Patients with mild PD typically showed improvements earlier than those with moderate to severe PD. Discussion. Despite the progressive nature of PD, the patients in this case series showed short-term and long-term improvements in balance, gait, activities of daily living, and quality of life after the boxing training program. A longer duration of training was necessary for patients with moderate to severe PD to show maximal training outcomes. Abstract

Single ion conducting polymer electrolytes (SIPEs) comprised of homopolymers containing a polysulfonylamide segment in the polymer backbone are presented. The polymer structure contains –C(CF3)2 functional groups that due to better solubility allow for effective lithiation, yielding well-defined materials. An optimized polymer electrolyte membrane was fabricated as a 3 : 1 blend of single ion conducting polymer and PVdF-HFP, which exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 0.52 mS cm−1 and an impressive lithium ion transference number of 0.9, as well as a 7Li self-diffusion coefficient of 4.6 × 10−11 m2 s−1 at 20 °C. The presented polymer electrolyte has superior oxidative stability and long-term stability against lithium metal, thus facilitating operation in LiNi1/3Mn1/3CO1/3O2 (NMC111)/lithium metal cells at 20 °C and 60 °C, thereby clearly demonstrating the application potential of this class of materials.
