A full-scale experimental geosynthetic-reinforced piled embankment (GRPE) and its numerical back analysis are presented in this article. The site is in Virvée (France) and is part of the new South Europe Atlantic high-speed line project. A GRPE system using geosynthetics with high tensile stiffness (≥10,000 kN/m) was proposed as an optimized solution to replace a classical pile-supported embankment (PE). Based on full-scale tests, three-dimensional finite-element models are considered to simulate both GRPE and PE solutions. The numerical results obtained are presented in comparison with in situ measurements. Settlements, pile stresses, and the geosynthetic strains are investigated. Then, a parametric study was conducted for the GRPE system to evaluate the influences of pile net spacing, geogrid tensile stiffness, and different numbers of high to relatively low tensile stiffness geosynthetic layers on the load transfer performance. The results show that the geosynthetic number of layers has less impact for the high tensile stiffness cases on the system settlement and load transfer efficiency. The use of a double-layer geosynthetic reinforcement with high tensile stiffness enhances the overall performance of the geosynthetic-reinforced piled embankment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ability of the Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT) to lateralize hippocampal sclerosis (HS) in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) was explored in a sample of 50 patients with MTLE-HS (23 right and 27 left). Patients' AVLT scores were adjusted to the demographic characteristics of each individual in accordance with the Portuguese normative data. The laterality of the HS was determined by consensus by two neuroradiologists. ROC curves were used to identify the best AVLT cutoff scores to differentiate right vs. left HS. Diagnostic statistics were applied to different AVLT measures. The study results revealed that four AVLT scores can correctly classify the laterality of HS in the total sample and a sub-group of 39 right-handed patients (Edinburgh Laterality Inventory +100): delayed recall trial (76 and 80%, respectively), delayed recognition trial (64 and 67%, respectively), learning over trials index (64 and 74%, respectively), and long-term percent retention index (68 and 72%, respectively). In right-handed patients, the diagnostic capability of the delayed recall trial was improved by pairing it with the learning over trials index (accuracy of 85%). In sum, AVLT measures of verbal memory differentiate left from right HS in MTLE. The delayed recall trial demonstrated good diagnostic capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Advances in diagnostic techniques coupled with ongoing environmental changes have resulted in intensified surveillance and monitoring of arbovirus circulation in the Amazon. This increased effort has resulted in increased detection of insect-specific viruses among hematophagous arthropods collected in the field. This study aimed to document the first isolation of Agua Salud alphavirus in mosquitoes collected within the Brazilian Amazon. Arthropods belonging to the family Culicidae were collected within a forest fragment located in the Environmental Protection Area of the metropolitan region of Belem. Subsequently, these specimens were meticulously identified to the species level. Afterward, the collected batches were macerated, and the resulting supernatant was then inoculated into C6/36 and Vero cell cultures to facilitate viral isolation. The presence of arboviruses within the inoculated cell cultures was determined through indirect immunofluorescence analysis. Furthermore, positive supernatant samples underwent nucleotide sequencing to precisely identify the viral strains present. Notably, a batch containing Culex (Melanoconion) mosquitoes was identified to be positive for the genus Alphavirus via indirect immunofluorescence. This study is the first report on insect-specific alphavirus isolation in Brazil and the first-ever description of Agua Salud alphavirus isolation within Amazon Forest remnants. The aim of this study is to test the multidimensional construct of the Entrepreneurial University (EU), and therefore to confirm whether EU factors make a positive contribution to regional competitiveness. Data were collected from ten Portuguese Public Universities (PPUs) through a self-administered questionnaire. First- and second-order confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) were performed through factor and multiple linear regression analyses. The main findings show that EU related factors—perceived and combined with actual regional metrics—especially entrepreneurial supporting measures, positively contributed to regional competitiveness. This study shows policy makers that universities are not merely cost centres but provide knowledge spillovers that can have a positive influence on regional competitiveness.
