Purpose This paper aims to describe the design and user testing of GeoForge, a multiple-player digital learning experience for middle school that leverages virtual reality (VR) and individualized websites for learning concepts in planetary science. This paper investigates how specific instructional design choices and features of the technology fostered collaborative behaviors. Design/methodology/approach GeoForge was implemented in 3 middle school classrooms with a total of 220 students. Learners used GeoForge in class in groups of 3–4 to learn about planetary science. A mixed-methods approach examined collaboration using classroom observations, teacher interviews, student surveys and student artifacts. Using Jeong and Hmelo-Silver’s (2016) seven affordances of technology for collaborative learning, this paper identifies ways in which features of GeoForge supported collaborative behaviors. Findings Instructional design which combined VR and the digital science journal (DSJ) helped foster collaboration. Some collaborative behaviors were especially notable in classrooms that did not regularly practice these skills. Segmenting tasks in the DSJ, clarifying instructions to articulate ideas, showing other group members’ responses onscreen and enabling multiuser VR environments contributed to collaborative behaviors and a satisfying learning experience as observed and documented through multiple methods. Originality/value GeoForge successfully integrated VR and personalized websites in a classroom planetary science lesson, an approach which balanced instructional design and logistical challenges while creating opportunities for collaboration.

Or, les evolutions geopolitiques actuelles obligent a revoir notre doctrine basee sur une dissuasion aux concepts vieillissants, sans oublier l’importance du theâtre national.

Le modele de nos forces armees a peu evolue depuis le choix de la professionnalisation en 1996. Il n’est plus adapte pour faire face aux menaces actuelles et futures en raison du retour du fait guerrier. Il faut donc redonner epaisseur et profondeur a notre systeme, notamment sur le territoire national.

The harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) is the world’s most widely distributed pinniped species ranging from temperate to Arctic regions (30–78.5° N in the Atlantic, 28–61.2° N in the Pacific), but no detailed overview of the species status exists. The aims of this review are to (i) provide current information on the genetic structure, population status, and threats; (ii) review potential consequences of a changing climate; and (iii) identify knowledge gaps to guide future research and monitoring. Although the species is globally abundant, wide differences exist across the species’ broad range. As climate warms, populations at the edges of the species’ distributional range are likely to be more affected. The primary climate-related drivers include: (i) changes in weather patterns, which can affect thermoregulation; (ii) decrease in availability of haul-out substrates; (iii) large-scale changes in prey availability and inter-specific competition; (iv) shifts in the range of pathogens; (v) increase in temperature favouring the biotransformation of contaminants; and (vi) increased exposure to pollutant from increased freshwater run-off. Multiple anthropogenic stressors may collectively impact some populations. Coordinated monitoring efforts across and within regions is needed. This would allow for a spatially explicit management approach including population-specific responses to known stressors.

Objectives We aimed to clarify the definition, distribution, clinical association and outcomes of large calcinosis in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Methods We conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) focusing on SSc-related large calcified masses. Upon updating the terminology and definition, all cases of “pseudotumoral” calcinosis seen at the Cochin and Padova University Hospitals were reviewed. Results The SLR yielded 30 SSc cases, with large calcified masses mainly defined as “tumoral” or “pseudotumoral”. Among the 629 SSc cases included in the Cochin and Padova cohorts, 19 (3%) living and 7 deceased patients were affected by pseudotumoral calcinosis; among these, the great majority had a severe vascular phenotype. The mean age in the whole population (56 cases) was 59 ± 11.4 years with a median disease duration at calcinosis onset of 7 (5–10) years. Twenty-five out of 56 patients (44.6%) had the diffuse cutaneous form of SSc. Anti-topisomerase I and anticentromere were found equally. Pseudotumoral calcinosis were commonly symmetrical and the size ranged from 2 to 15.5 cm. Most patients had multiple site involvement: 52% hand/wrist, 29% shoulders and elbows, 20% hips and 25% spinal calcinosis. Fistulization/ulceration and infections were reported in 32% and 23% of cases, respectively; nerve compression was found in 40% of spinal calcinosis and in one patient with limb calcinosis. There was no clear evidence of clinical and radiological improvement with any treatment. A partial improvement was seen in 7 patients that underwent surgery. Conclusion Pseudotumoral calcinosis may occur in about 3% of SSc patients, commonly symmetrical and in multiple sites without differences regarding the cutaneous subtypes but often in those with a severe vascular phenotype. Medical treatment seems ineffective, whereas a surgical approach may be considered.

The fault detection applied to a large amount of small distributed PV systems needs to be simple, cost-effective, and reliable. This work presents a fault detection procedure applied to distributed PV system fleets, based on a novel performance indicator, designated as Performance to Peers (P2P), that can be constructed on the sole basis of the comparison of the energy production data of several neighboring PV systems. This article explains how to construct this performance indicator and how to use it to carry out automatic fault detections. This fault detection procedure has been developed in the context of the performance analysis carried out on approximately 6000 PV installations located in Europe, and it is illustrated and discussed through real application cases. The P2P has been shown to be more stable than the Performance Ratio (PR), in particular in the presence of sub-par metadata on the PV systems, and it thus constitutes a more robust performance indicator for fault detection. The stability of P2P is characterized by an Absolute Median Deviation (MAD) that is typically of 10% for hourly data and 5% for daily data. The application of P2P to fault diagnosis is illustrated on four categories of faults that are among the most frequently observed on PV systems. The main limitations of this novel methodology are discussed, and several future lines of research are suggested.

PurposeThrough the case of the response to the 2017 Mocoa mudslide, the purpose of this paper is to contribute to a deeper understanding of why and how humanitarian response should be locally led, particularly in more complex contexts such as those affected by conflict.Design/methodology/approachThe study draws on qualitative data collected during a four-month period in 2017, with a focus on the immediate April 2017 emergency phase which presented the largest diversity of local, national and international actors.FindingsThe study has found that competing legitimacy claims between the state and non-state response blocs led to tensions and confrontations between disaster response actors and consequently a problematic response process and outcome. The institutional map that was plotted based on locally perceived actor legitimacies indicates a local state-led response would have better served the broader goals of humanitarian support, development and peacebuilding.Practical implicationsThese findings have significant implications for the understanding of how the locally led response should be understood. Better alignment with local needs and feasibilities requires a differential outlook on what is to be understood as “local.” This study puts forward the insider/outsider lens as a tool to identify the actors who possess local trust and legitimacy and are thus best suited to bridge the elements of the humanitarian-development-peacebuilding triple nexus.Originality/valueThis study gives a voice to state actors, which was largely absent in previous studies.
