This report presents the highlights of the 2014 Revision of World Urbanization Prospects, which contains the latest estimates of the urban and rural populations of 233 countries or areas from 1950 to 2014 and projections to 2050, as well as estimates of population size from 1950 to 2014 and projections to 2030 for all urban agglomerations with 300,000 inhabitants or more in 2014. The world urban population is at an all-time high, and the share of urban dwellers, currently at 54 per cent, is projected to represent two thirds of the global population in 2050. Continued urbanization will bring new opportunities and challenges for sustainable development.

This publication is a response to the need, often expressed by developing countries, for clearer guidance on the policy and administrative aspects of applying transfer pricing analysis to some of the transactions of multinational enterprises (MNEs) in particular. Such guidance should not only assist policy makers and administrators in dealing with complex transfer pricing issues, but should also assist taxpayers in their dealings with tax administrations. Without an effective response to transfer pricing issues, profits earned in one jurisdiction might appear to be shifted to another jurisdiction. This may have the net effect of minimizing tax revenues in a country where economic activity of the MNE takes place, and therefore the ability to finance country's development.

The UN E-Government Survey serves as a tool for decision-makers to identify their areas of strength and challenges. The Survey assesses the e-government readiness of the 193 Member States of the UN according to a quantitative composite index of e-readiness based on website assessment, telecommunication infrastructure, and human resource endowment. ICTs can help reinvent government in such a way that existing institutional arrangements can be restructured and new innovative arrangements can flourish, paving the way for a a collaborative, effective, inclusive, transparent and accountable government, which is critical for sustainable development. The 2012 International Trade Statistics Yearbook, Volume I provides an overview of the international trade merchandise trade in 2012 and detailed information on the trade performance for numerous countries up to 2012. Overall, data for a total of 175 countries (or areas) are shown with the 2012 data on imports and exports by commodity and trading partner provided for approximately 90 countries (or areas), representing more than 70% of world trade of 2012. The population and housing census is part of an integrated national statistical system, which may include other censuses (for example, agriculture), surveys, registers and administrative files. This publication is a statistical framework that provides a comprehensive, consistent, comparable and flexible set of environmental-economic accounts for policymaking, analysis and research purposes. Agenda 21 adopted at the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development, in Rio de Janeiro, called for the establishment of a “programme to develop national systems of integrated environmental and economic accounting in all countries”. More recently, the outcome document of the Rio+20 Conference reconfirmed that “integrated social, economic, and environmental data and information…is important to decision-making processes.” In response to the continued need for environmental and environmental-economic information, the UN Statistical Commission established the UN Committee of Experts on Environmental-Economic Accounting with the mandate to revise the System.

World Fertility Report 2013: Fertility at the Extremes is the fifth in a series and focuses on trends in fertility over the past 20 years and key factors underlying these trends for countries at the extremes of fertility: 66 countries with more than 3.2 children per woman in 2005-2010 and 70 countries with 2.0 children per woman or less in 2005-2010. The data presented are from World Population Prospects: The 2012 Revision, the official United Nations publication of population estimates and projections. Country data are taken from the same report, other United Nations sources or national sources, as appropriate.

The World Youth Report 2013 focuses on the topic of youth and migration. It delivers a synopsis of the basic facts on youth migration and development discussing who is migrating, where they are coming from, where they are going to and why. The Report looks at the entire process involved in migration including the planning and preparations and the drivers behind the decisions that young people make. It examines the impact migration has on young people – those on the move as well as those who have been left behind - their experiences in transit and the lives of migrants in their destination countries and the challenges they face. First-hand experiences of youth are woven into the Report, adding another dimension to the material covered.

The wall chart on Population, Development and the Environment 2013 presents the latest data available on 15 demographic, socio-economic and environmental indicators at the national, regional and world levels. It also contains illustrative maps and graphs, along with brief explanatory texts of selected regional and global trends on population, development and the environment.

The purpose of a Tourism Satellite Account is to analyse in detail all the aspects of demand for goods and services associated with the activity of visitors; to observe the operational interface with the supply of such goods and services within the economy; and to describe how this supply interacts with other economic activities. The present volume provides an updated framework for constructing a Tourism Satellite Account. It should permit greater internal consistency of tourism statistics with the rest of the statistical system of a country, as well as increased international comparability of these data.

The 2011 International Trade Statistics Yearbook, Volume II - Trade by Commodity contains detailed tables showing international trade for 258 individual commodities and eleven world trade tables covering trade values and indices up to the year 2011. The information contained is based on data provided by approximately 140 countries, representing more than 90% of world trade of 2011 and has been compiled approximately six months after the submission of Volume I as the preparation of these tables requires and benefits from the additional country data. Volume I - Trade by Country has been compiled early in 2011 to allow for an advanced release of an overview of international merchandise trade in 2011. Volume II contains updated versions of the two world trade tables A and D published in Volume I.

The World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) is the definitive report of the United Nations on the state of the world economy. Through mobile technology, ICT applications are working to deliver essential services in many parts of the world. ICT applications compliment and work together with government bodies to help deliver services in education, health, agriculture and financial empowerment – just to name a few. Mobile technology also allows information to become increasingly accessible to many different populations. ICT's advancements through mobile technology are engaging people of all ages and are quickly gaining popularity in the developing parts of the world.

The motivating source of developing guidance for the operational use of an integrated approach to economic statistics in national statistical programmes has been the benefits of integrated economic statistics for nationally and internationally coordinated economic policy. The methodological and practical guidelines in this publication respond to the recognized need for an integrated approach to increase the coherence and consistency of basic economic statistics for enhancing the quality and analytical value of both basic economic statistics and macroeconomic statistics. Double tax treaties play a key role in the context of international taxation, by reducing or eliminating double taxation over cross-border income, thus encouraging international investment and global economic growth, and by enhancing cooperation among tax administrations, especially in tackling international tax evasion and avoidance. This publication, which is designed especially for developing countries, aims at providing practical guidance to effectively implement double tax treaties and, in particular, those drawing upon the United Nations Model Double Taxation Convention between Developed and Developing Countries. Primary audiences are officials of national tax authorities and other tax professionals dealing with international taxation matters, the general public, media and universities.

The 2013 Report informs that there has been a certain backsliding on a number of commitments covered by MDG 8 in the past year, and some progress in others. Official development assistance has fallen for a second year in a row and the multilateral trade negotiations remain at an impasse, but duty free access for exports from developing countries has improved. But while usage of information and communication technologies increases, the costs remain higher in developing countries and essential medicines remain insufficiently accessible. Thus, there are some signs that political momentum for advancing international development cooperation has weakened. However, some governments have consistently pursued their commitments despite domestic austerity policies.

The 2010 Energy Statistics Yearbook is the fifty-fourth issue in a series of annual compilations of internationally comparable statistics summarizing world energy trends. Annual data for 224 countries and areas for the period 2007 to 2010 are presented on production, trade and consumption of energy: solids, liquids, gaseous fuels and electricity. In addition, per capita consumption series are also provided for all energy products. Graphs are included to illustrate historic trends and/or changes in composition of production and/or consumption of major energy products. Demographic Yearbook 2012 is the the sixty-third in a series published since 1948. Through the cooperation with the National Statistical Offices, official demographic statistics are compiled in theYearbook, as available, for more than 230 countries and areas of the world up to the reference year 2012. This edition of the Yearbook contains chapters on the population size and distribution, the population of capital cities, fertility, foetal mortality, infant and maternal mortality, general mortality, nuptiality and divorce.

This publication provides statistics on the production of about 600 major industrial commodities. Data was provided for the ten-year period of 2001-2010 for approximately 200 countries and territories. The commodities have been selected on the basis of their importance in world production and trade. The Yearbook is organized in two volumes, and contains correspondence tables that allow the user to link the information provided to other internationally-used product classifications.

National Transfer Accounts (NTA) provides a coherent accounting framework of economic flows from one age group or generation to another, typically for a national population in a given calendar year. This manual consolidates and presents in a systematic fashion the concepts, the methods and estimation procedures to measure these flows of resources across age. The NTA estimates are useful to understand and analyse inter-generational economic flows, and the implications of changing population age structures for the fiscal sustainability of social programs, the accumulation of physical and human capital, macroeconomic growth, and familial support for children, youth and older persons.

This is a biennially recurring publication of the United Nations. The 2015 deadline to meet the targets of the Millennium Development Goals is fast approaching. There has been significant progress, but it is uneven. Meanwhile the context within which development goals are pursued has become much more challenging, visible in the recent food, fuel and financial crisis. Environmental degradation, demographic changes and persistent inequalities further threaten progress. This publication will discuss new directions and policies at the national and international level to achieve transformative change and sustainable development post-2015.

This report presents information on international migration levels, trends and legal instruments for major areas, regions and countries of the world. The data for the international migrant stock described in chapter I are taken from the two volumes of the publication Trends in International Migrant Stock: The 2013 Revision-Migrants by Age and Sex and Trends in International Migrant Stock: The 2013 Revision-Migrants by Destination and Origin, while the estimates on the total population in chapter I are based on World Population Prospects: The 2012 Revision, DVD Edition. Chapter III provides an analysis of the ratification status of migration-related legal instruments for Member States of the United Nations and the International Labour Organization (ILO), based on information from the United Nations Treaty Section and the NORMLEX Information System on International Labour Standards, which can be accessed at http://treaties.un.org and http://www.ilo.org, respectively.

World Population Ageing 2013 provides a description of global trends in population ageing and includes a series of indicators of the ageing process by development regions, major areas, regions and countries. It considers the process of population ageing for the world as a whole, for more and less developed regions, major areas and regions as well as individual countries or areas. Demographic profiles highlighting the relevant indicators of population ageing and covering the period 1950 to 2050 are provided for each country or area.

The 2010 Energy Balances and Electricity Profiles contains energy balances for about 115 developing countries, showing production, trade, conversion and consumption in energy units for all energy products; and electricity profiles for about 190 countries, providing detailed information on production, trade and consumption of electricity, net installed capacity and thermal power plant input for selected developing and developed countries.

The publication contains detailed official national accounts data for over 200 countries or areas of the World for the years 2001 to 2012. It is a valuable source of information on the state and structure of economies worldwide. The data for each country or area are presented in separate chapters with uniform table headings and classifications as recommended in the System of National Accounts 1993 (1993 SNA). Each country chapter also contains a write-up on the methodology and data sources which are used to compile the national accounts. A summary of the SNA conceptual framework, classifications, definitions, is also included in the publication. It contains statistics on gross domestic product by expenditure at current and constant prices and the relations among product, income, saving and net lending; value added by kind of activity at current and constant prices, and output, gross value added and fixed assets by industry; classification of consumption expenditure of general government, households, and non-profit institutions serving households according to purpose; production account through the financial account for the institutional sectors; and cross classification of gross value added by industry and institutional sector.

The 2013 report examines key drivers of inequality that have emerged in the recent past and the impact of rising inequality. It examines trends in social, economic and spatial inequalities and assesses why inequality matters in order to propose policy solutions to this persistent problem, paying particular attention to the potential role of empowerment and participation. The report highlights inequalities within and across countries and shows the cumulative, mutually-reinforcing effects these inequalities have on the systematic lack of participation and disadvantage of some social groups and on the intergenerational transmission of poverty. It discusses the role of economic and political institutions in promoting participation and empowerment.
