152. Organic photodetectors: a possible technology for on-fiber receivers

Abstract

A new class of photodetectors, whose active material is an organic semiconductor, has been developed. Thanks to the ease of deposition on any dielectric surface, the device may be built directly on the cleaved surface of an optical fiber, therefore realizing an on-fiber-detector (OFD). The photodetector is based on an organic semiconductor belonging to a new general class of neutral dithiolenes deposited onto a quartz substrate with microlithographically defined gold electrodes so to realize a metal-semiconductor-metal surface structure. First experimental results on a photodiode made of (monoreduced imidazolidine-2,4,5-trithione) having peak responsivity at 1014nm, have shown a time response down to 100microseconds, at present limited by the leakage current noise due to the poorly rectifying contacts. Differently from the vast majority of organic semiconductor materials, dithiolenes have shown extremely high chemical and thermal stability. The photoresponse of the dithiolenes in the liquid phase is shown to be wavelength selective with an absorption peak about 150nm wide that can be chemically tailored so to shift from almost 1000nm to 1700nm. Experimental measurements to prove that the absorption property is maintained in the solid state also at wavelengths around 1500nm, thus covering with a photodetector the spectrum of possible telecom applications, are under way.

Abstract

Human saliva from a healthy donor was subjected to fractionation by gel chromatography and six pools were collected and analysed by MALDI-TOF-MS and HPLC-ESI-MS. Three peptides, corresponding to 888.3, 687.3, and 524.1 amu and SNYLYDN, YLYDN, and LYDN sequences (determined by automated Edman sequencing), were isolated from pool 4. YLYDN was not previously described in human saliva. The peptides show the common C-terminal sequence of histatin 3 and histatin 1. To exclude the possibility that the three peptides were an artifact of the purification procedure, nine samples of human saliva were collected from healthy donors, immediately acidified with 0.2% TFA, and analysed by RP-HPLC-ESI-MS. The three peptides were detected in all the analyzed samples. SNYLYDN was always found at a concentration higher than that of YLYDN and LYDN. A correlation analysis performed on quantitative data indicated that the three peptides derive only from histatin 3. Other already known histatins also were searched for in the chromatogram. Histatins 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10 were observed, although not in all samples analyzed, whereas other minor histatins were not detected.

Abstract

Human salivary cystatins, five major (S, S1, S2, SA, SN) and two minor (C and D), are multifunctional proteins playing a different role in the oral environment. Salivary cystatin SN is able to effectively inhibit lysosomal cathepsins B, C, H and L and cystatin SA inhibits cathepsins C and L in vitro. These activities suggest, particularly for cystatin SN, an important role in the control of proteolytic events in vivo. Differently, cystatins S are involved, together with statherin, in the mineral balance of the tooth. Due to their distinct role, a reliable method for identification and quantification of the different cystatins, as well as of possible truncated and derived forms, could be helpful for the assessment of the status of the oral cavity. To this purpose high-performance liquid chromatography electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI MS) was applied to the analysis of human saliva obtained from healthy subjects. All known salivary cystatins, with the exception of cystatin C, were detected. Strong evidence was also obtained for the presence in saliva of post-translational modified isoforms of cystatins, which may be related to donor habits. Cystatin SN and cystatins S, S1 and S2 were well separated by HPLC-ESI MS coupling from other components and thus this approach can be successfully applied to their quantification.

Nonlinear absorption dynamics of new neutral metal-dithiolenes belonging to [M(R,R'timdt)2] class is investigated using picosecond pump-probe technique. The mechanisms accounting for the dynamics are explained using multi-level rate equations, supported by relativistic time-dependent density functional calculations.

Abstract

The paper will describe a new photodetector based on a metal-organic semiconductor material sensitive to the near IR region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The detector has a planar metal-semiconductor-metal structure with the active material deposited from liquid phase over a quartz substrate. Together with the fabrication process and the time response to light pulses, emphasis will be given to the intrinsic wavelength selectivity of the semiconductor material, of about 100nm around its peak sensitivity. The ease of deposition may enable to directly develop optical devices on passive optical component or on electronic substrates.

Abstract

The advent of new technologies has changed the approach to dental treatment, offering to the patients less invasive techniques, among them the laser is an instrument which is most frequently offered by dentists, because of its well known properties of decontamination and biostimulation offering significant opportunities within the periodontal and oral reconstructive surgery. Also in orthodontics we can take advantages of some peculiarities, such as in surgical orthodontic treatment "Minor", with the current research aimed to test its effectiveness in order to accelerate tooth movement. The purpose of this study is to validate the laser as a tool to choice for the resolution of gingival hyperplasia resulting from fixed orthodontic treatment.

Abstract

Purpose: to value efficacy of anti microbic propriety of silver ligatures Orthoshield Safe-T-Tie® on periodontal tissues in orthodontic patients. Materials and methods: 50 orthodontic patients between 11 and 20 years old with permanent teeth were selected in this study. We evaluated periodontal health of maxillary and mandibular lateral incisors and canines at TO before the substitution of elastomeric ligatures with Orthoshield Safe-T-Tie® ligatures and at T1 (one month after substitution of ligatures). We used PI (Periodontal Index), GI (Gingival Index) and PRC-real-time to analyze periodontal health. Results: there was an improvement of gingival inflammation and a reduction of periodontal pathogens. Conclusions: Orthoshield Safe-T-Tie® ligatures improve periodontal health in orthodontic patients.

166. Laser biostimulation and self ligating appliances in orthodontics: periodontal remodeling

Abstract

24 patients are selected and 30 teeth in vestibular mucosae, without keratinized gingiva. No active periodontal disease (no BOP and gingival recessions). No BOP and CAL loss at the start of the orthodontic treatment. Every patient was treated with self ligating appliances (Time2/Time3, American Orthodontics). In every orthodontic session (each 30 days as average) the patient was treated with Nd:Yag laser biostimulation, for 90 seconds, with 320 micron fiber section, on utilizing the Biostimulating machine paremeters. No termical effects were produced by lasers applications. At the moment of debonding, 30 teeth involved in the research were evaluated in terms of quality and quantity of attached gingiva. BOP and CAL loss were also investigated. Every tooth considerated, at the end of orthodontic treatment showed a attached gingiva around the crown: the average of keratinized gingiva at the end of the study was 2,7 mm and the mean increasing at each month was 0,45 mm.. The combination between self ligating appliances and laser's biostimulation could improve the differentiation of periodontal ligaments stem cells in fibroblasts, able to promote attached gingiva around the crown of the teeth erupted in oral vestibular mucosae.

Abstract

Based on a new general class [M(R,R'timdt) 2 ] of neutral dithiolenes, an innovative photodetector has been developed. By casting the organ material onto an opportunely configured quartz substrate a planar metal-semiconductor-meta structure has been obtained. Thanks to the strikingly intense absorption in the near infrared of these compounds, the device photoconductivity is enhanced when the irradiating wavelength belongs to this region of the spectrum. The device therefore acts as an intrinsically wavelength-selective photodetector.

Abstract

The circadian rhythms of histatins 1, 3, 5, of statherin and uric acid were investigated in whole human saliva. Histatins showed a rhythm approximately synchronous with salivary flow rate (acrophase around 5 pm), the higher amplitude pertaining to histatin 1 (about 50% of the mesor). Uric acid showed a large rhythm asynchronous with flow rate and histatin concentrations (4.4 +/- 1.4 am). Statherin did not show a significant circadian rhythm on five of six volunteers. This finding confirms that the secretion route of statherin is different from that of histatins.
