This study aims to explore if EFL learners’ self-efficacy perceptions of their L2 writing performance vary by proficiency level. As the research design, the quantitative method was employed and a questionnaire measuring EFL learners’ L2 writing self-efficacy on a Likert scale was used as the data collection instrument. The participants were EFL students (n=47) enrolled in the preparatory program of an English-medium instruction state university in Türkiye. Data analysis showed that there was a positive correlation between the participants’ proficiency level and their perceptions of L2 writing self-efficacy. The findings indicate that EFL students develop a more positive attitude towards L2 writing as they progress in language mastery and the preparatory programs appear to be feeding into the appearance of this positive perception. Nevertheless, some points among which idea production represents the biggest concern continue to be an issue deserving much attention across the levels. This finding suggests that L2 writing training should be enhanced with strategies as well as activities that can assist students in producing ideas on given topics.

Life expectancy of patients with bipolar disorder (BD) is known to be shorter than the general population. Some of the premature deaths in these patients are attributed to unnatural causes such as suicide, accidents and homicides. Death due to suicide is 15 times more common in patients with GI compared to the general population. The present study aimed to investigate the comorbidity of Adult Separation Anxiety Disorder (ASAD) and the relationship between this comorbidity and suicide in patients with BD. A total of 138 outpatients with BD at remission between the ages of 18-65 years and 63 healthy controls were included in our study. All participants were administered a sociodemographic data form, Hamilton Depression Scale (HMDS), Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), Adult Separation Anxiety Questionnaire, and Structured Clinical Interview for Separation Anxiety Symptoms (ASAD-SCI). The age and gender of the participants did not differ significantly between the control group, the BD and BD+ASAD groups. The mean age of the participants was 42.3±11.9 years. When categorized according to gender, 42.3% of the participants were male and 57.7% were female. ASAD was detected in 46.3% of the participants. The suicide attempt rate was significantly higher in the BD and BD+ASAD groups than in the control group. The rate of suicide attempt was significantly higher in the BD+ASAD group than in the BB group. We demonstrated that the comorbidity of ASAD was associated with previous suicide attempts in patients with BD. Recognizing and treating ASAD in patients with BD may reduce suicide attempts in these patients.

- Abstract
The right and wrong mental models that learners have about the changes in the matter have a great importance in understanding the basis of the chemistry. Therefore, the main purpose of this research was to identify students' misconceptions with regard to physical and chemical change and to come up with models to explain their understanding of this topic. This research was qualitative descriptive with cross-sectional design. The participants were 148 6th graders in Kütahya which is a western city of Turkey. The data were collected through a questionnaire containing five openended questions. Additionally, for a more detailed analysis, 28 participants were interviewed to explore the mental models that emerged. Analysis of responses to the questionnaire generated four mental models (Particle Motion Model, Moving Away Particle Model, Particle Motion+Moving Away Particle Model, Macro Model) for physical change and three mental models for chemical change (Changing Particle Model, Moving Away Particle Model and Macro-Micro Change Model). Implications of these results for chemistry education were discussed. Mental models defined in the research can enable teachers of science and researchers to identify difficulties faced by students regarding physical and chemical changes; thus, they can effectively decide which approach to take on to devise scientific models.

Memristive devices are the subject of extensive studies nowadays. While the Dynamic Route Map is a powerful tool for analyzing the response of first-order memristors under DC stimuli, the development of an equivalent tool for investigating the response of these devices to AC stimuli is still an open question. Recently, Pershin and Slipko introduced a graphic method, which we name Time Average State Dynamic Route (TA-SDR), applicable to study first-order memristors subject to periodic rectangular pulse train-based stimuli. In this paper we introduce an alternative investigation tool, referred to as State Change Per Cycle Map (SCPCM), which is applicable in these very same scenarios. The novel analysis technique, inspired by the work of the French mathematician Henri Poincaré, reduces the investigation of a first-order non-autonomous continuous-time system to a simpler study of a first-order discrete-time map. A State Change Per Cycle Map defines precisely how the stimulus modulates each of the admissible device memory states over one input cycle. It is derivable either by means of numerical simulations, where a model for the ReRAM cell is available, or experimentally, in the case where the device memory state is accessible. While the predictive capability of a TA-SDR is limited to those case studies, where the AC periodic voltage signal applied across the device induces negligible changes in the respective memory state over each cycle, the conclusions drawn by analyzing a SCPCM have general validity, irrespective of the properties of the stimulus. The advantages of the novel analysis method for periodically driven ReRAM cells over the classical TA-SDR tool are highlighted through a number of case studies, some of which reveal the interesting capability of the ReRAM cell to display multiple oscillatory operating modes upon periodic stimulation via trains with a suitable number of SET and RESET pulses per period.

Computer Science - Emerging Technologies - Abstract
By considering potential health problems that a fully covering receiver may cause in vessel-like environments, the implementation of a partially covering receiver is needed. To this end, distribution of hitting location of messenger molecules (MM) is analyzed within the context of molecular communication via diffusion with the aim of channel modeling. The distribution of these MMs for a fully covering receiver is analyzed in two parts: angular and radial dimensions. For the angular distribution analysis, the receiver is divided into 180 slices to analyze the mean, standard deviation, and coefficient of variation of these slices. For the axial distance distribution analysis, Kolmogorov- Smirnov test is applied for different significance levels. Also, two different implementations of the reflection from the vessel surface (i.e., rollback and elastic reflection) are compared and mathematical representation of elastic reflection is given. The results show that MMs have tendency to spread uniformly beyond a certain ratio of the distance to the vessel radius. By utilizing the uniformity, we propose a channel model for the partially covering receiver in vessel-like environments and validate the proposed model by simulations.

Objective:To investigate the effect of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) phobia in patients with ureteral stones.Materials and Methods:Between August 2020 and March 2021, patients over the age of 18 who were diagnosed with ureteral stones were included in this study. The COVID-19 Phobia scale (C19P-S) was used to measure the COVID-19 phobia levels of the patients. Demographic and patients’ characteristics were recorded. The time between the onset of the patient’s complaint and the time of admission to the hospital was recorded and grouped as group 1 (≤7 days), group 2 (7-21 days), group 3 (>21 days). Results:A total of 77 patients with a mean age of 45.8±14.8 years were eligible for analysis. Among these, 55 (71.4%) were male. According to the time between the onset of the patient’s complaint and the time of admission to the hospital, there were 39 (50.6%) patients in group 1 (≤7 days), 17 (22.1%) patients in group 2 (7-21 days) and 21 (27.3%) patients group 3 (>21 days). The median C19P-S scores in these groups were 32.0 (15.0-46.0), 37.0 (26.0-62.0) and 56.0 (37.0-80.0), respectively. There were significant differences in terms of C19P-S between groups of the time between the onset of the patient’s complaint and the time of admission to the hospital (p≤0.001).Conclusion:COVID-19 phobia caused a delay in the hospital admission of patients with ureter stones. When patients have complaints, it is necessary to raise the awareness of society about applying to the hospital and to increase awareness of this issue.

Background: Mitochondrial diseases are the most common group of inherited metabolic disorders, causing difficulties in definite diagnosis due to clinical and genetic heterogeneity. Clinical components are predominantly associated with pathogenic variants shown in nuclear or mitochondrial genomes that affect vital respiratory chain function. The development of high-throughput sequencing technologies has accelerated the elucidation of the genetic etiology of many genetic diseases that previously remained undiagnosed. Methods: Thirty affected patients from 24 unrelated families with clinical, radiological, biochemical, and histopathological evaluations considered for mitochondrial diseases were investigated. DNA isolated from the peripheral blood samples of probands was sequenced for nuclear exome and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analyses. MtDNA sequencing was also performed from the muscle biopsy material in one patient. For segregation, Sanger sequencing is performed for pathogenic alterations in five other affected family members and healthy parents. Results: Exome sequencing revealed 14 different pathogenic variants in nine genes encoding mitochondrial function peptides (AARS2, EARS2, ECHS1, FBXL4, MICOS13, NDUFAF6, OXCT1, POLG, and TK2) in 12 patients from nine families and four variants in genes encoding important for muscle structure (CAPN3, DYSF, and TCAP) in six patients from four families. Three probands carried pathogenic mtDNA variations in two genes (MT-ATP6 and MT-TL1). Nine variants in five genes are reported for the first time with disease association: (AARS2: c.277C>T/p.(R93*), c.845C>G/p.(S282C); EARS2: c.319C>T/p.(R107C), c.1283delC/p.(P428Lfs*); ECHS1: c.161G>A/p.(R54His); c.202G>A/p.(E68Lys); NDUFAF6: c.479delA/p.(N162Ifs*27); and OXCT1: c.1370C>T/p.(T457I), c.1173-139G>T/p.(?).Conclusion: Bi-genomic DNA sequencing clarified genetic etiology in 67% (16/24) of the families. Diagnostic utility by mtDNA sequencing in 13% (3/24) and exome sequencing in 54% (13/24) of the families prioritized searching for nuclear genome pathologies for the first-tier test. Weakness and muscle wasting observed in 17% (4/24) of the families underlined that limb-girdle muscular dystrophy, similar to mitochondrial myopathy, is an essential point for differential diagnosis. The correct diagnosis is crucial for comprehensive genetic counseling of families. Also, it contributes to making treatment-helpful referrals, such as ensuring early access to medication for patients with mutations in the TK2 gene.

Background/purpose – ChatGPT, a recent form of AI-based language model, have garnered interest among people from diverse backgrounds with its immersive capabilities. Using ChatGPT to support or generate scientific research has also created an ongoing debate over its advantages versus risks. The present study aimed to conduct an AI-enabled research process using ChatGPT so as to evaluate its potential to generate an accurate, clear, concise, and unbiased information as these are essential elements of rigorous scientific work. Materials/methods – To achieve this aim, we worked on emergency remote teaching (ERT), which garnered significant interest due to its wide-spread use during the COVID-19 pandemic, and created opposing views, particularly in comparison to online teaching. We conducted a simultaneous query on ChatGPT-3.5 and 4 on five basic themes: (1) the definition and emergence of ERT, (2) the appropriateness of ERT for different grade levels, (3) a comparison between ERT and online teaching, (4) the possible outcomes of ERT, (5) the future prospects and uses of ERT, and we performed a comparative evaluation of these responses with regard to accuracy, clarity, conciseness, and potential bias. We also used Cohen’s kappa to assess inter-rater agreement in our analysis. Results – The results indicated that both versions were capable of generating accurate information without significant bias although the responses lacked depth and insight with being somewhat repetitive. As the level of judgment required by the query increased, the performance of ChatGPT-4 was much better; it provided clearer and more concise responses with a more synthesized and detailed categories of information on ERT. Conclusion – Based on our results, we state that the cooperation of human and artificial intelligence is still warranted to ensure an accurate and reliable output from AI-based scientific queries. If ChatGPT is a plane with innovative technologies, there still needs to be a pilot in the cockpit to make use of these technologies in the best way so as to fly the plane safely to its destination.

- Abstract
Human genetic studies of critical COVID-19 pneumonia have revealed the essential role of type I interferon-dependent innate immunity to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conversely, an association between the HLA-B∗15:01 allele and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated individuals was recently reported, suggesting a contribution of pre-existing T cell-dependent adaptive immunity. We report a lack of association of classical HLA alleles, including HLA-B∗15:01, with pre-omicron asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated participants in a prospective population-based study in the United States (191 asymptomatic vs. 945 symptomatic COVID-19 cases). Moreover, we found no such association in the international COVID Human Genetic Effort cohort (206 asymptomatic vs. 574 mild or moderate COVID-19 cases and 1,625 severe or critical COVID-19 cases). Finally, in the Human Challenge Characterisation study, the three HLA-B∗15:01 individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 developed symptoms. As with other acute primary infections studied, no classical HLA alleles favoring an asymptomatic course of SARS-CoV-2 infection were identified.

High-quality Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education provides unique opportunities for students’ futures. STEM education requires integrating multiple disciplines and promotes students’ problem-solving skills when engaging with real-world problems like engineers. Teachers have prominent roles in helping students develop basic concepts, connect their interests to their abilities, and sustain their curiosity from the early years. The present study used a predictive correlational survey design to investigate students’ STEM career interests and the effects of teacher-related variables: teacher attitudes and self-efficacy beliefs. The participants were 421 middle school students and 160 teachers randomly selected from the target population. STEM Attitudes Scale and Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale for STEM Practice were used to collect data from teachers, and STEM Career Interest Scale (STEM-CIS) was used for data collection from students. Normality assumptions were tested, and parametric tests were used. One sample t-test was used to compare students’ observed mean scores to the expected mean scores and multiple linear regression to investigate the predictivity of teacher attitudes and self-efficacy beliefs on student interests. The results revealed positive weak, and moderate relationships between teacher attitudes, self-efficacy beliefs, and student interests. Additionally, teacher efficacy beliefs had stronger predictivity on student interests than attitudes had.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a serious lung disease of unknown etiology and characterized by interstitial fibrosis. The patients usually present with potentially fatal cardiac arrhythmias. This study aimed to investigate indicators of arrhythmia based on electrocardiography (ECG) in patients with IPF. ECG indicators of ventricular depolarization (VD) and repolarization (VR) (QT, QTc, QTd, QTdc, Tp-e, JT and JTc intervals, Tp-e / QT ratio, Tp-e / QTc ratio, Tp-e / JT ratio, and Tp-e / JTc ratio) were analyzed retrospectively in patients with IPF (n:52) and compared with the healthy control group (n:52). The mean QRS interval was lower in patients with IPF compared to the control group, indicators of VD and VR were higher in patients with IPF compared to the control group (p < 0.05). A positive correlation was found between indicators of VD and VR and inflammation markers (CRP and cTn-I) (p < 0.05). We found that indicators of VD and VR were higher in patients with IPF and that is positively correlated with inflammatory markers. Inflammation in cases of IPF may be associated with the development of malignant or chronic cardiac arrhythmias. [Med-Science 2022; 11(2.000): 677-81]

The ongoing efforts in the research development and standardization of 5G, by both industry and academia, have resulted in the identification of enablers (Software Defined Networks, Network Function Virtualization, Distributed Mobility Management, etc.) and critical areas (Mobility management, Interference management, Joint access-backhaul mechanisms, etc.) that will help achieve the 5G objectives. During these efforts, it has also been identified that the 5G networks due to their high degree of heterogeneity, high QoS demand and the inevitable density (both in terms of access points and users), will need to have efficient joint backhaul and access mechanisms as well as enhanced mobility management mechanisms in order to be effective, efficient and ubiquitous. Therefore, in this paper we first provide a discussion on the evolution of the backhaul scenario, and the necessity for joint access and backhaul optimization. Subsequently, and since mobility management mechanisms can entail the availability, reliability and heterogeneity of the future backhaul/fronthaul networks as parameters in determining the most optimal solution for a given context, a study with regards to the effect of future backhaul/fronthaul scenarios on the design and implementation of mobility management solutions in 5G networks has been performed., Comment: IEEE Conference on Standards for Communications & Networking, September 2017, Helsinki, Finland

Mobility Management (MM) techniques have conventionally been centralized in nature, wherein a single network entity has been responsible for handling the mobility related tasks of the mobile nodes attached to the network. However, an exponential growth in network traffic and the number of users has ushered in the concept of providing Mobility Management as a Service (MMaaS) to the wireless nodes attached to the 5G networks. Allowing for on-demand mobility management solutions will not only provide the network with the flexibility that it needs to accommodate the many different use cases that are to be served by future networks, but it will also provide the network with the scalability that is needed alongside the flexibility to serve future networks. And hence, in this paper, a detailed study of MMaaS has been provided, highlighting its benefits and challenges for 5G networks. Additionally, the very important property of granularity of service which is deeply intertwined with the scalability and flexibility requirements of the future wireless networks, and a consequence of MMaaS, has also been discussed in detail., Comment: Submitted to 14th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems

Introduction: The most prevalent head and neck cancer type is laryngeal cancer. Laryngeal cancer susceptibility is increased by a combination of genetic variables and environmental factors. Genetic predispositions that influence the functioning of the immune system can affect tumor development. Our study investigates the impact of alterations in CD40 (rs1883832) and CD40L (rs1126535) genes and the levels of their proteins on the development of laryngeal cancer. Materials and methods: The PCR-RFLP method was used for genotyping SNPs in 96 patients with laryngeal cancer and 127 healthy individuals. Additionally, ELISA was utilized to measure circulating levels of sCD40 and sCD40L. Results: We identified a significant difference in the genotype distribution of CD40 (rs1883832) between laryngeal cancer patients and healthy individuals (p = 0.05). The C allele was dominant, and the CC genotype was more frequently observed in patients with laryngeal cancer (OR: 2.34, 95% CI: 0.98–5.54). In contrast, no statistically significant difference in the genotypes of CD40L (rs1126535) was detected between laryngeal cancer patients and the control group (p = 0.12). Additionally, no significant differences in serum sCD40 or sCD40L levels were observed between the groups (p = 0.48 and p = 0.15, respectively). However, a moderate positive correlation was found between sCD40 and sCD40L levels in the laryngeal cancer group (r = 0.52, p<0.01), a relationship that was not observed in the control group. Discussion: According to the current findings, it is suggested that the CD40 (rs1883832) gene variation found in patients may indicate an individual's susceptibility to developing laryngeal cancer. On the other hand, CD40L (rs1126535) seems to not play a significant role. While serum sCD40 and sCD40L levels did not show significant differences between patients and controls, the correlation in cancer patients suggests that these markers may be relevant in tumor progression. Further research is required to clarify the functional implications of these genetic variants and their potential use as biomarkers for laryngeal cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To examine the diagnostic continuity in patients diagnosed with Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) by prospective symptom grading of patients with a provisional diagnosis of PMDD. Methods: The study included 95 women with a provisional diagnosis of PMDD who applied to Çukurova University Faculty of Medicine Hospital, Department of Mental Health and Diseases Outpatient Clinic, and 64 women with similar sociodemographic characteristics as the control group. Sociodemographic data form, Premenstrual Syndrome Scale, Psychache Scale, and Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 were applied to the participants. Individual calendars were prepared for those with a provisional diagnosis of PMDD, and they were asked to fill them out for 3 months. Results: In this study, 65.3% of patients with a provisional diagnosis of PMDD met the criteria for permanent PMDD. Psychache scale total score averages of those diagnosed with PMDD were significantly higher than the control group (P < .001). The mean anxiety sensitivity total score and subscales of those with a provisional diagnosis of PMDD were significantly higher than the control group; both the total score (P=.04) and the physical sensitivity subscale (P=.01) were significantly higher in those with a permanent diagnosis of PMDD. Dysmenorrhea was significantly more frequent in those with a provisional diagnosis of PMDD (P=.03); this relationship was not found in those with a permanent diagnosis of PMDD. Conclusion: Approximately two-thirds of those with a provisional diagnosis of PMDD met the criteria for a permanent diagnosis, indicating that prospective evaluation is necessary for those with a provisional diagnosis of PMDD. It has been shown that those with higher PMDD severity have more intense psychological pain severity and more severe anxiety sensitivit [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Objectives: This study investigates the relationship between psychiatric disorders and herpes zoster (HZ). Emergency and outpatient admissions to Kırşehir Education and Research Hospital between 2019 and 2023 were examined. Psychiatric disorders are known in the literature as one of the factors that weaken the immune system, thereby increasing the risk of infection. Methods: In our study, the past diagnoses and sociodemographic data of all individuals over the age of 18 who applied to the Kırşehir Education and Research Hospital between 2019 and 2023 were obtained from hospital system records. Patients receiving immunosuppressive treatment or those with diseases that could affect immune system function were excluded from the study. The sample was divided into two groups: those with and without psychiatric disorders diagnosed with HZ. Sociodemographic features, change of HZ frequency over the years, and differences among psychiatric diagnosis subgroups were examined between the groups. Results: Individuals with psychiatric diseases had a significantly higher frequency of HZ compared to those without psychiatric diseases (0.0040% vs. 0.0016%, p < 0.001). No significant difference was found in the frequency of HZ among different types of psychiatric disorders (p = 0.60). Additionally, no statistically significant difference was found in the median age between the groups (p = 0.11). In terms of gender distribution, it was determined that women were more frequently diagnosed with HZ compared to men. Conclusions: The frequency of HZ was found to be higher in individuals with psychiatric disorders. However, further research is needed to explore the association between specific psychiatric diagnoses and HZ frequency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

VOCATIONAL training centers ,VOCATIONAL school students ,SCHOOL administrators ,VOCATIONAL education ,VOCATIONAL schools - Abstract
Vocational education is crucial for integrating students into the workforce by transforming theoretical knowledge into practice and developing job habits, knowledge, and skills in a specific professional field. This study aims to identify the reasons why students in vocational education choose Vocational Education Centers (VEC). The study was conducted using a phenomenological design. The study group consisted of school administrators, teachers, current students, students' parents, and the workplaces where they receive training in vocational schools with VEC practices in a city in eastern Türkiye during the 2023-2024 academic year. This study was conducted with a total of 32 participants, including eight school administrators, eight teachers, ten students, three parents, and three business representatives. As a result, it was revealed that during the transition phase to VEC, misinformation was provided, and the primary purpose of the practice was perceived not as vocational training but more as social aid distribution. It was also found that competition emerged due to the imposition of quotas on provinces and schools, and those schools used various methods to increase student enrollment. An important factor identified for students transitioning to VEC was the desire to earn financial gain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
