Abstract

En México, la ganadería bovina de doble propósito (GBDP) es uno de los sistemas productivos a pequeña escala más relevantes en el medio rural; sin embargo, presenta alta variabilidad en cuanto a sus parámetros socioeconómicos, productivos y tecnológicos. El objetivo de este estudio fue caracterizar la GBDP en el municipio Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, Oaxaca, México, y establecer una tipología representativa de los productores ganaderos. Para ello, se aplicó una encuesta a 155 productores ganaderos, usando un cuestionario que incluía variables cuantitativas y cualitativas clasificadas en cuatro secciones: sociales, productivas, económicas, y tecnológicas. La información recopilada se analizó mediante estadística descriptiva, técnicas de análisis multivariado y análisis de varianza. El análisis de componentes principales reveló cuatro factores que explicaron el 78.27% de la variabilidad original, y se relacionaron con la productividad y dimensión del rancho (F1), la condición social-cultural del productor (F2), la eficiencia productiva en el rancho (F3), y aspectos familiares del productor (F4). El análisis de conglomerados jerárquicos clasificó a los productores ganaderos en tres grupos, denominados como tradicionales (89.03%), en transición (8.38%), y comerciales (2.5%). Las diferencias entre los grupos de productores identificados radican en la superficie del rancho, tamaño del hato, producción de leche por semana, número de becerros vendidos por año e ingreso anual.

Abstract

El objetivo de este artículo es mostrar cómo, en consonancia con lo que ocurrió con las naciones más desarrolladas de Europa o los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica, a partir de la segunda década del siglo XX, algunos estados mexicanos, como San Luis Potosí —que es el espacio aquí estudiado—, por vez primera establecieron su legislación laboral. Entre otros elementos, esto derivó del absentismo laboral, que era una práctica recurrente especialmente entre los trabajadores manuales, y que se originaba por el consumo de alcohol. En el cambio de siglo, el alcoholismo fue considerado uno de los problemas sociales a los que se atribuía el entorpecimiento del desarrollo, principalmente económico. La investigación se sustenta en material de archivo y hemerográfico poco trabajado, y en algunos casos inédito, lo que es una contribución a aspectos mínimamente tratados en la historiografía local y nacional.

Abstract

This study employs computational algorithms to automatically identify and classify features in X‐Ray fluorescence (XRF) microscopy images. Principal component analysis (PCA) and unsupervised machine learning algorithms, such as Gaussian mixture (GM) clustering, are implemented to label features on a collection of XRF maps of human atherosclerotic plaque samples. The investigation involves the hard X‐Ray nanoprobe (NanoMAX) at MAX IV synchrotron radiation facility, utilizing scanning transmission X‐Ray microscopy (STXM) and XRF techniques. The analysis covers regions of interest scanned by the beam with a step size of 200 nm, yielding XRF maps of elements like calcium, iron, and zinc. These maps reveal intricate structures unsuitable for manual labeling. However, they can be accurately classified in an automated fashion using GM. Prior to clustering, PCA is used to deal with repeated patterns and background areas. The resulting clusters are associated with different types of features, which can be identified as specific tissues confirmed by histology. Regions of high concentrations of phosphorus, sulfur, calcium, and iron are found in the samples. These regions are also observed in the STXM results as spots of low transmission that typically are associated with calcium deposits only.

Abstract

La Educación Plástica y Visual aparece en educación primaria para permitir al alumnado crear, construir, analizar, reflexionar, comunicar y conectar a través del arte, desarrollando capacidades, habilidades y actitudes que fomentan la creatividad, el análisis crítico y el lenguaje en todas sus vertientes. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar y comparar los desarrollos curriculares de dos administraciones educativas identificando sus fortalezas y debilidades, y realizar propuestas de mejora para futuros desarrollos curriculares. Como método se ha realizado un análisis comparativo de las normativas curriculares, definiéndose una estructura común y elementos diferenciadores a nivel cuantitativo y cualitativo. Los resultados muestran la existencia de diferencias significativas, en carga horaria, número y redacción de criterios de evaluación, así como en número y redacción de saberes o contenidos. Se observa que la administración educativa con mayor puntuación en evaluación PISA, presenta un desarrollo más completo a través de un currículo más simple, dedica más tiempo al área, evalúa con criterios más claros y establece más referencias directas a competencias como la lingüística. En conclusión, el análisis realizado pone de manifiesto que los desarrollos son dispares y que deben apuntarse recomendaciones para cohesionar el currículo de la Educación Plástica y Visual para su mejora.

Abstract

Nowadays, the need to track fast-spreading infectious diseases has raised due to the recent COVID-19 disease pandemic. As a response, Wastewater-based Surveillance (WBS) has emerged as an early detection and disease tracking method for large populations that enables a comprehensive overview of public health allowing for a faster response from public health sector to prevent large outbreaks. The process to achieve WBS requires a highly intensive sampling strategy with either expensive equipment or trained personnel to continuously sample. The sampling problem can be addressed by passive sampler development. Chitosan-based hydrogels are recognized for their capability to sample and remove various contaminants from wastewater, including metals, dyes, pharmaceuticals, among others. However, chitosan-based hydrogels unique characteristics, can be exploited to develop passive samplers of genetic material that can be a very valuable tool for WBS. This study aimed to develop a novel chitosan hydrogel formulation with enhanced characteristics suitable for use as a passive sampler of genetic material and its application to detect disease-causing pathogens present in wastewater. The study evaluates the effect of the concentration of different components on the formulation of a Chitosan composite hydrogel (Chitosan, Glutaraldehyde, Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), and Polyethylene glycol (PEG)) on the hydrogel properties using a Box Hunter & Hunter experimental matrix. Hydrogels’ weight, thickness, swelling ratio, microscopic morphology (SEM), FTIR assay, and zeta potential were characterized. The resulting hydrogel formulations were shown to be highly porous, positively charged (Zeta potential up to 35.80 ± 1.44 mV at pH 3) and with high water swelling capacity (up to 703.89 ± 15.00 %). Based on the results, a formulation from experimental design was selected and then evaluated its capacity to adsorb genetic material from a control spiked water with Influenza A virus synthetic vector. The adsorption capacity of the selected formulation was 4157.04 ± 64.74 Gene Copies/mL of Influenza A virus synthetic vector. The developed hydrogel showed potential to be used as passive sampler for pathogen detection in wastewater. However, deeper research can be conducted to improve adsorption, desorption and extraction techniques of genetic material from chitosan-hydrogel matrices.

Abstract

Summary: CombiVacS study has demonstrated a strong immune response of the heterologous ChAdOx1-S/BNT162b2 vaccine combination. The primary outcomes of the study were to assess the humoral immune response against SARS-CoV-2, 28 days after a third dose of a mRNA vaccine, in subjects that received a previous prime-boost scheme with ChAdOx1-S/BNT162b2. Secondary outcomes extended the study to 3 and 6 months. The third vaccine dose of mRNA-1273 in naive participants previously vaccinated with ChAdOx1-S/BNT162b2 regimen reached higher neutralizing antibodies titers against the variants of concern Delta and BA.1 lineage of Omicron compared with those receiving a third dose of BNT162b2 at day 28. These differences between BNT162b2 and mRNA-1273 arms were observed against the ancestral variant G614 at day 90. Suboptimal neutralizing response was observed against BQ.1.1, XBB.1.5/XBB.1.9, and JN.1 in a relevant proportion of individuals 180 days after the third dose, even after asymptomatic Omicron breakthrough infections. Abstract

In this paper, the design flexibility of the control-bounded analog-to-digital converter principle is demonstrated by considering band-pass analog-to-digital conversion. We show how a low-pass control-bounded analog-to-digital converter can be translated into a band-pass version where the guaranteed stability, converter bandwidth, and signal-to-noise ratio are preserved while the center frequency for conversion can be positioned freely. The proposed converter is validated with behavioral simulations for a variety of filter orders, notch-filter frequencies, and oversampling ratios. Abstract

Large language models (LLMs) have been shown to be able to perform new tasks based on a few demonstrations or natural language instructions. While these capabilities have led to widespread adoption, most LLMs are developed by resource-rich organizations and are frequently kept from the public. As a step towards democratizing this powerful technology, we present BLOOM, a 176B-parameter open-access language model designed and built thanks to a collaboration of hundreds of researchers. BLOOM is a decoder-only Transformer language model that was trained on the ROOTS corpus, a dataset comprising hundreds of sources in 46 natural and 13 programming languages (59 in total). We find that BLOOM achieves competitive performance on a wide variety of benchmarks, with stronger results after undergoing multitask prompted finetuning. To facilitate future research and applications using LLMs, we publicly release our models and code under the Responsible AI License.

190. Development of a 3D model of clinically relevant microcalcifications

Abstract

A realistic 3D anthropomorphic software model of microcalcifications may serve as a useful tool to assess the performance of breast imaging applications through simulations. We present a method allowing to simulate visually realistic microcalcifications with large morphological variability. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to analyze the shape of 281 biopsied microcalcifications imaged with a micro-CT. The PCA analysis requires the same number of shape components for each input microcalcification. Therefore, the voxel-based microcalcifications were converted to a surface mesh with same number of vertices using a marching cube algorithm. The vertices were registered using an iterative closest point algorithm and a simulated annealing algorithm. To evaluate the approach, input microcalcifications were reconstructed by progressively adding principal components. Input and reconstructed microcalcifications were visually and quantitatively compared. New microcalcifications were simulated using randomly sampled principal components determined from the PCA applied to the input microcalcifications, and their realism was appreciated through visual assessment. Preliminary results have shown that input microcalcifications can be reconstructed with high visual fidelity when using 62 principal components, representing 99.5% variance. For that condition, the average L2 norm and dice coefficient were respectively 10.5 $\mu$m and 0.93. Newly generated microcalcifications with 62 principal components were found to be visually similar, while not identical, to input microcalcifications. The proposed PCA model of microcalcification shapes allows to successfully reconstruct input microcalcifications and to generate new visually realistic microcalcifications with various morphologies.
