The glaucoma treatment paradigm is starting to change from a more reactive approach that relies on topical medications to a more proactive approach that leverages procedural interventions. This evolution toward interventional glaucoma has been enabled by a growing array of lower-risk minimally invasive procedures such as laser trabeculoplasty, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, and procedural pharmaceuticals. A common feature of these glaucoma interventions—as with all glaucoma interventions—is the need for early, prompt, and accurate diagnosis. The present review summarizes new and upcoming developments in glaucoma diagnostics. These include technologies and techniques for home-based intraocular pressure measurement, novel visual field platforms, photography- and optical coherence tomography-based visualization, and artificial intelligence applications. They also include emerging technologies such as mitochondrial flavoprotein fluorescence imaging, detection of apoptosing retinal cells, collector channel visualization, and genetic testing. These diagnostic modalities have the potential to circumvent the limitations of traditional diagnostic methods. By increasing the frequency and feasibility of obtaining valuable glaucoma data with more rapid detection of disease and progression, these diagnostics may enable an interventional approach to glaucoma treatment for the betterment of patient care. BACKGROUND: According to the literature, the brachial plexus presents a high rate of anatomical variations in the human neural system. The musculocutaneous nerve, a vital component of the brachial plexus, exhibits significant anatomical variations that hold clinical relevance across multiple medical disciplines. This case report, with a comprehensive review, explores the different variations in the course, branching patterns, and clinical implications of the musculocutaneous nerve. Understanding these variations is essential for surgeons, radiologists, and clinicians to enhance surgical precision, improve diagnostic accuracy, and reduce the risk of iatrogenic complications. CASE REPORT: During an anatomical dissection we observed a very rare anatomical variation of the musculocutaneous nerve. Based on this discovery, we performed research in the literature with the aim of finding if this variation has been previously described. Firstly, we identified various classifications of anatomical variations of communicating branches between the musculocutaneous and median nerves, and then we observed that these variations corresponded to various rates of frequency. Our finding is a rare undescribed anatomical variant within the variants classified as Type II according to Le Minor, which is observed in 6.8-10.7% of cases. CONCLUSIONS: The peculiar position of anatomical variations and anastomosis has clinical and functional relevance. Healthcare professionals must be aware of these variations to minimize surgical complications, accurately diagnose neurovascular pathologies, and optimize patient management. Annual wellness visits (AWVs) guide appropriate patient care through lifestyle modifications, medication intervention, or social assistance. We launched a quality improvement program to target Medicare beneficiaries as part of an Accountable Care Organization (ACO). Key stakeholders collectively implemented a process consisting of two cohorts: AWVs completed with the support of the pharmacy team or directly by providers. A standardized workflow for the pharmacy cohort involved the clinical pharmacists and pharmacy extenders, allowing a layered learning experience. Aim: Liver‐expressed antimicrobial peptide 2 (LEAP2) dynamics in human plasma and its association with feeding behaviour remain poorly understood. Therefore, this study aims: (a) to investigate fasting LEAP2 in participants with normal weight or with overweight or mild obesity (OW/OB); (b) to study the association between fasting LEAP2 and anthropometric and metabolic traits, feeding behaviour, LEAP2 genetic variants and blood cell DNA methylation status; and (c) to ascertain postprandial changes in LEAP2 after high protein intake and the association with feeding behaviour and food intake. Methods: Anthropometric and behavioural measures, genotyping, methylation profiling, plasma glucose and LEAP2 concentrations were assessed in 327 females and males. A subgroup of 123 participants received an ad libitum high‐protein meal, and postprandial LEAP2 concentration and behavioural measures were assessed. Results: LEAP2 concentration was higher in participants with OW/OB (p < 0.001) and in females (p < 0.001), and was associated with LEAP2 single nucleotide polymorphisms rs765760 (p = 0.012) and rs803223 (p = 0.019), but not with LEAP2 methylation status. LEAP2 concentration was directly related to glycaemia (p = 0.001) and fullness (p = 0.003) in participants with normal weight, whereas it was associated with body mass index (p = 0.018), waist circumference (p = 0.014) and motor impulsivity in participants with OW/OB (p = 0.005). A negative association with reward responsiveness was observed in participants with OW/OB (p = 0.023). LEAP2 concentration was inversely associated with food intake (p = 0.034) and decreased after a high‐protein meal (p < 0.001), particularly in women (p = 0.002). Conclusion: Increased LEAP2 in participants with OW/OB is associated with behavioural characteristics of obesity. Our results show sexual dimorphism in LEAP2 concentration before and after food intake and highlight the role of LEAP2 in feeding regulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wheat, one of the top‐produced cereals worldwide, is affected by many abiotic and biotic stresses, such as the ascomycete fungus Zymoseptoria tritici, the causal agent of Septoria tritici blotch (STB). STB has historically been managed with fungicides, but the pathogen readily overcomes chemical control because of its rapid genetic evolution. In addition, many fungicides are now being banned or limited by governments aiming for more environment‐friendly methods for pest management. This scenario gave rise to thinking about alternative control means such as biological control agents (BCAs) and organism‐derived biomolecules (ODBs). In this work, we review microbial BCA candidates and ODBs currently studied for the control of STB. Key studies have identified successful candidates including bacterial strains of the genera Pseudomonas and Bacillus, and fungal strains such as Trichoderma harzianum, Penicillium olsonii and Acremonium alternatum. In addition, lesser‐studied fungi, bacteria and compounds have been tested. Despite promising research, no BCA or ODB has been registered or commercially used against STB, and field trials are notably lacking, with existing studies being limited in scale. Further understanding of the interactions between Z. tritici and the wheat microbiome may uncover new potential candidates for STB biocontrol. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: A continuous obstacle that has limited access to and implementation of finger replantation surgery is timeliness, as ischemia time is traditionally considered a crucial factor for success. However, claims that the vitality of amputated fingers decreases after 6 h of warm ischemia and 12 h of cold ischemia are mostly based on theoretical considerations. Methods: Here we present a case of multi-digit revascularization after 72 h of warm ischemia using the microsurgical arteriovenous bypass technique. Results: In the reported case, revascularization was performed after a long ischemic period and showed good recovery of motor and sensory function. Conclusions: We identified significant limitations in the literature supporting time limits of ischemia and recent evidence demonstrating the feasibility of delayed finger replantation. The current treatment approach for amputation injuries often requires transfers or nighttime emergency procedures, increasing costs and limiting the national availability of finger replantation. Changes to finger replantation protocols based on evidence could expand access to this service and improve the quality of care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

How can multiple organizational, social, and political actors effectively address the contemporary challenges of digital political campaigning? We proceed by reviewing the increased theoretical and empirical importance of digital political campaigning. We discuss the new research advances in the field and acknowledge the necessity for interdisciplinary research given the rapidly evolving techniques and the imminent positive and negative risks of digital campaigning. We present a multi-level actor approach for dealing with the risks of digital political campaigning. We outline the contribution of this issue and identify relevant gaps for future research. How does the European Union handle the soft regulation of digital political campaigning? We assesses the effectiveness of the EU's soft governance concerning digital campaigning by examining how global digital platforms respond to the EU Code of Practice on Disinformation. In doing so, we advance a framework for analysis which measures specific steps in the platform compliance with soft law. Our results, based on the content analysis of platforms' annual reports, show that compliance depends on the priority assigned to regulatory themes by on-line corporations. Overall, we find higher levels of platform formal commitment rather than symbolic commitment through forms of report editing to signal compliance with the code of practice. Our analysis also shows evidence of implementation following from formal commitments when reporting requirements are less rigid. Consequently, EU soft governance can be effective for digital campaigning in areas prioritised by the addressees of regulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biomass continues to play a key role as an alternative to fossil fuels. Woody biomass produces lower greenhouse gas emissions than fossil fuels. However, in order to consider biomass as 'green energy', a number of factors should be taken into account, including the characterization of the quality of the resource. Therefore, monitoring quality parameters, such as moisture, ash, N content, is essential to assess the sustainability of biomass for energy production. This paper presents the results of laboratory analyses performed on wood chip samples from four Italian regions over a five-year period (2019–2023). In particular, all quality parameters defined by ISO 17225-9 for industrial wood chips were assessed. Data were analyzed using descriptive, parametric, non-parametric statistics, and multivariate analysis. An interest in quality monitoring has been observed, indicated by an increase in the number of samples received from suppliers and an enhancement in the average values of quality parameters. Moreover, an overall decrease in moisture and N content has been observed, while ash content and heating value have undergone non-linear variations. Statistically significant quality differences between samples from different regions may be the result of different practices, such as outdoor or indoor storage, climate differences, different biomass growth conditions. Background: Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease, has been associated with an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase, has emerged as a potential biomarker linking periodontitis, endothelial dysfunction, and CVD. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the existing evidence on the relationship between ADMA, periodontitis, and CVD, and to evaluate ADMA's potential as a biomarker for periodontal disease progression and its correlation with endothelial dysfunction. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases from their inception to March 2023. Observational and interventional studies assessing ADMA levels in patients with periodontitis and/or CVD were included. The methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated using the NIH Quality Assessment Tools. Due to the heterogeneity of the included studies, a qualitative synthesis was performed. Results: Cross-sectional studies consistently demonstrated significantly elevated ADMA levels in patients with periodontitis and CVD compared to healthy controls. The prospective cohort study indicated that successful periodontal treatment was associated with a significant reduction in ADMA levels and concomitant improvement in endothelial function. The pilot cohort study reported a significant decrease in ADMA levels following periodontal therapy in patients with chronic kidney disease. However, the randomized controlled trials did not demonstrate significant alterations in ADMA levels or endothelial function subsequent to periodontal treatment in patients with periodontitis alone. Conclusions: Periodontal treatment may effectively reduce ADMA levels and improve endothelial function, particularly in patients with comorbidities. These findings suggest that ADMA is a promising biomarker linking periodontitis, endothelial dysfunction, and CVD. However, the limitations of this study include the small number of studies, heterogeneity in the study designs, and a lack of long-term follow-up data. Further high-quality, longitudinal studies are required to confirm its clinical utility and elucidate the underlying mechanisms of these relationships. The integration of periodontal care into CVD prevention and management strategies warrants consideration, as it may contribute to mitigating the cardiovascular risk associated with periodontitis. Consistency in crisis communication is a key aspect of effective political leadership during crises, but can be difficult in multilevel systems due to the number of leaders and fragmentation of policymaking powers. The literature on multilevel governance suggests that centralisation enhances consistency in crisis communication while decentralisation leads to inconsistency. Consistency in crisis communication is also expected to depend on whether leaders coordinate crisis management. Comparing crisis communication in Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, this paper shows that centralisation does not automatically lead to consistent crisis communication. At the same time, decentralised decision making does not necessarily undermine consistency. Overall, crisis communication tends to be more consistent when leaders coordinate crisis management.
