Abstract: We report on a search for a CP-violating asymmetry in the charmless hadronic decay B -> K*(892)+- pi-+, using 9.12 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity produced at \sqrt{s}=10.58 GeV and collected with the CLEO detector. We find A_{CP}(B -> K*(892)+- pi-+) = 0.26+0.33-0.34(stat.)+0.10-0.08(syst.), giving an allowed interval of [-0.31,0.78] at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract: Using data recorded by the CLEO III detector at CESR, we report on the first measurements of the branching fractions for decays of the Lambda_c^+ charmed baryon into (Lambda pi+ pi+ pi- pi0) and (Lambda omega pi+). All rates are measured with respect to the p K- pi+ decay mode. The relative branching fractions are 0.39 +- 0.09(stat.) +- 0.09(syst.) and 0.24 +- 0.06(stat.) +- 0.06(syst.) for the (Lambda pi+ pi+ pi- pi0) and (Lambda omega pi+) modes, respectively. The data also suggest decays of the Lambda_c^+ via (Lambda eta pi+, eta --> pi+ pi- pi0) with a rate which is consistent with previous measurements of the branching fraction of Lambda_c^+ to (Lambda eta pi+, eta --> gamma gamma). The measurements indicate that the omega and eta sub-modes comprise 87+-13% of the (Lambda pi+ pi+ pi- pi0) final state. We set an upper limit on the contribution from non-omega and non-eta modes of 0.13 at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract: The Radio Ice Cherenkov Experiment is an ultra‐high energy neutrino detector at the South Pole. In this contribution we motivate the search for ultra‐high energy neutrinos by considering the astrophysical objects which are expected to emit neutrinos. We describe the philosophy behind using radio receivers to detect the Cherenkov radiation produced when ultra‐high energy neutrinos interact in a dense medium and outline the analysis path for obtaining limits on the ultra‐high energy neutrino flux.

Abstract: Using 13.8 fb(-1) of data collected at or just below the Upsilon(4S) with the CLEO detector, we report the result of a search for the flavor changing neutral current process D0--gammagamma. We observe no significant signal for this decay mode and determine 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions B(D0--gammagamma)/B(D0--pi(0)pi(0))0.033 and B(D0--gammagamma)2.9 x 10(-5).

Abstract: We report on a search for charmless hadronic B decays to the three-body final states K(0)(S)h(+)pi(-), K(+)h(-)pi(0), K(0)(S)h(+)pi(0) (h(+/-) denotes a charged pion or kaon), and their charge conjugates, using 13.5 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity produced near sqrt[s]=10.6 GeV, and collected with the CLEO detector. We observe the decay B-->K0pi(+)pi(-) with a branching fraction (50(+10)(-9)(stat.)+/-7(syst.))x10(-6) and the decay B-->K(*+)(892)pi(-) with a branching fraction (16(+6)(-5)(stat.)+/-2(syst.))x10(-6).

Abstract: Using 13.53 fb(-1) of CLEO data, we have measured the ratios of the branching fractions R(+)(e),R(+)(mu) and the combined branching fraction ratio R(+)(l), defined by R(+)(l)=[B(D+-->K(*0)l(+)nu(l))]/[B(D+-->K-pi(+)pi(+))]. We find R(+)(e)=0.74+/-0.04+/-0.05, R(+)(mu)=0.72+/-0.10+/-0.05, and R(+)(l)=0.74+/-0.04+/-0.05, where the first and second errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. The known branching fraction B(D+-->K-pi(+)pi(+)) leads to B(D+-->K(*0)e(+)nu(e))=(6.7+/-0.4+/-0.5+/-0.4)%, B(D+-->K(*0)mu(+)nu(mu))=(6.5+/-0.9+/-0.5+/-0.4)%, and B(D+-->K(*0)l(+)nu(l))=(6.7+/-0.4+/-0.5+/-0.4)%, where the third error is due to the uncertainty in B(D+-->K-pi(+)pi(+)).

Abstract: Using $13.3{\mathrm{fb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ of ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ data recorded with the CLEO II and CLEO II.V detector configurations at CESR, we have searched for ${f}_{J}(2220)$ decays to ${K}_{S}^{0}{K}_{S}^{0}$ in untagged two-photon interactions. We report an upper limit on the product of the two-photon partial width and the branching fraction, ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}}\mathcal{B}({f}_{J}(2220)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}_{S}^{0}{K}_{S}^{0}),$ of less than 1.1 eV at the 95% confidence level; systematic uncertainties are included. This data set is four times larger than that used in the previous CLEO publication.

Abstract: We have searched for lepton flavor violating decays of the tau lepton with one or two KS0 mesons in the final state. The data used in the search were collected with the CLEO II and II.V detectors at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 13.9 fb^-1 at the Upsilon(4S) resonance. No evidence for signals were found, therefore we have set 90% confidence level (C.L.) upper limits on the branching fractions B(tau -> e KS0) mu KS0) e 2KS0) mu 2KS0) < 3.4e-6. These represent significantly improved upper limits on the two-body decays and first upper limits on the three-body decays.

Abstract: We determine the weak coupling /V(cb)/ between the b and c quarks using a sample of 3 x 10(6) BB; events in the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. We determine the yield of reconstructed B-->D*l nu; decays as a function of w, the boost of the D* in the B rest frame, and from this we obtain the differential decay rate d Gamma/dw. By extrapolating d Gamma/dw to w=1, the kinematic end point at which the D* is at rest relative to the B, we extract the product /V(cb)/F(1), where F(1) is the form factor at w=1. Combined with theoretical results for F(1) we determine /V(cb)/=0.0469+/-0.0014(stat)+/-0.0020(syst)+/-0.0018(theor).

Abstract: Upper limits are presented on the diffuse flux of ultra-high energy $\nu_e$, based on analysis of data taken by the RICE experiment during August, 2000. The RICE receiver array at South Pole monitors cold ice for radio-wavelength Cherenkov radiation resulting from neutrino-induced in-ice showers. For energies above 1 EeV, RICE is an effective detector of over 15 km$^3$ sr. Potential signal events are separated from backgrounds using vertex location, event reconstruction, and signal shape. These are the first terrestrial limits exploiting the physics of radio Cherenkov emissions from charged-current $\nu_e+N\to e+N'$ interactions., Comment: 29 pages, 10 Figures (Latex2e), Revised version submitted to Astroparticle Physics. Abstract: We have studied the color-suppressed hadronic decays of neutral B mesons into the final states D*0pi(0). Using 9.67 x 10(6) BB pairs collected with the CLEO detector, we observe the decays B( 0) --> D0pi(0) and B( 0) -->D(*0)pi(0) with the branching fractions BB( 0) -->D0pi(0)) = (2.74(+0.36)(-0.32) +/- 0.55)x10(-4) and BB( 0) -->D(*0)pi(0)) = (2.20(+0.59)(-0.52) +/- 0.79)x10(-4). The first error is statistical and the second systematic. The statistical significance of the D0pi(0) signal is 12.1sigma ( 5.9sigma for D(*0)pi(0)). Utilizing the B( 0) -->D*0)pi(0) branching fractions we determine the strong phases delta(I,D(*)) between isospin 1/2 and 3/2 amplitudes in the Dpi and D*pi final states to be cosdelta(I,D) = 0.89 +/-0.08 and cosdelta(I,D*) = 0.89 +/- 0.08, respectively.

Abstract: We report on the observation of B0bar -> D*0 pi+ pi+ pi- pi- decays. The branching ratio is (0.30 +/- 0.07 +/- 0.06)%. Interest in this particular mode was sparked by Ligeti, Luke and Wise who propose it as a way to check the validity of factorization tests in B0bar -> D*+ pi+ pi- pi- pi0 decays.

Abstract: We have measured the branching fraction and photon energy spectrum for the radiative penguin process b-->s gamma. We find Beta(b-->s gamma) = (3.21+/-0.43+/-0.27(+0.18)(-0.10))x10(-4), where the errors are statistical, systematic, and from theory corrections. We obtain first and second moments of the photon energy spectrum above 2.0 GeV, = 2.346+/-0.032+/-0.011 GeV, and - (2) = 0.0226+/-0.0066+/-0.0020 GeV(2), where the errors are statistical and systematic. From the first moment, we obtain (in the modified minimal subtraction renormalization scheme, to order 1/M(3)(B) and beta(0)alpha(2)(s)) the heavy quark effective theory parameter Lambda = 0.35+/-0.08+/-0.10 GeV.

Abstract: We have searched for the two-body decay of the B meson to a light pseudoscalar meson h = pi(+/-),K+/-,K(0)(S) and a massless neutral feebly interacting particle X(0) such as the familon, the Nambu-Goldstone boson associated with a spontaneously broken global family symmetry. We find no significant signal by analyzing a data sample containing 9.7x10(6) BBbar mesons collected with the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, and set 90% C.L. upper limits italicB(B(+/-) --> h(+/-)X(0)) = 4.9x10(-5) and italicB(B(0) --> K(0)(S)X(0)) = 5.3x10(-5). These limits correspond to a lower bound of approximately 10(8) GeV on the family symmetry breaking scale with vector coupling involving the third generation of quarks.

Abstract: We present the first measurement of the D*(+) width using 9/fb of e(+)e(-) data collected near the Upsilon(4S) resonance by the CLEO II.V detector. Our method uses advanced tracking techniques and a reconstruction method that takes advantage of the small vertical size of the Cornell Electron-positron Storage Ring beam spot to measure the energy release distribution from the D*(+)-->D(0)pi(+) decay. We find gamma(D*(+)) = 96+/-4 (stat)+/-22 (syst) keV. We also measure the energy release in the decay and compute Delta m identical with m(D*(+))-m(D(0)) = 145.412+/-0.002 (stat)+/-0.012 (syst) MeV/c(2).

Abstract: We report on a search for the radiative decay Upsilon(1S)-->gammaeta(') in 61.3 pb(-1) of data taken with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. Three decay chains were investigated, all involving eta(')-->pi(+)pi(-)eta, followed by eta-->gammagamma, eta-->pi(0)pi(0)pi(0), or eta-->pi(+)pi(-)pi(0). We find no candidate events in any of the three cases and set a combined upper limit of 1.6x10(-5) at 90% C.L., significantly smaller than the previous limit. We compare our result to other radiative Upsilon decays, to radiative J/psi decays, and to theoretical predictions.

Abstract: We present an observation and time-integrated rate measurement of the decay D(0)-->K(+)pi(-)pi(0) produced in 9 fb(-1) of e(+)e(-) collisions near the Upsilon(4S) resonance. The signal is inconsistent with an upward fluctuation of the background by 4.9 standard deviations. We measured the time-integrated rate of D(0)-->K(+)pi(-)pi(0) normalized to the rate of D(0)-->K(+)pi(-)pi(0) to be 0.0043(+0.0011)(-0.0010) (stat)+/-0.0007 (syst). This decay can be produced by doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decays or by the D(0) evolving into a D(0) through mixing, followed by a Cabibbo-favored decay to K(+)pi(-)pi(0). We also found the CP asymmetry A = (9(+25)(-22))% be consistent with zero.

Abstract: Using 12.7 fb(-1) of data collected with the CLEO detector at CESR, we observed two-photon production of the cc states chi(c0) and chi(c2) in their decay to pi(+)pi(-)pi(+)pi(-). We measured gamma(gammagamma)(chi(c))xB(chi(c)-->pi(+)pi(-)pi(+)pi(-)) to be 75+/-13(stat)+/-8(syst) eV for the chi(c0) and 6.4+/-1.8(stat)+/-0.8(syst) eV for the chi(c2), implying gamma(gammagamma)(chi(c0)) = 3.76+/-0.65(stat)+/-0.41(syst)+/-1.69(br) keV and gamma(gammagamma)(chi(c2)) = 0.53+/-0.15(stat)+/-0.06(syst)+/-0.22(br) keV. Also, cancellation of dominant experimental and theoretical uncertainties permits a precise comparison of gamma(gammagamma)(chi(c0))/gamma(gammagamma)(chi(c2)), evaluated to be 7.4+/-2.4(stat)+/-0.5(syst)+/-0.9(br), with QCD-based predictions.

Abstract: We have studied two-body charmless hadronic decays of B mesons into the final states straight phiK and phiK(*). Using 9.7 million BandBmacr; pairs collected with the CLEO II detector, we observe the decays B- --> phiK- and B0--> phiK(*0) with the following branching fractions: B(B--->phiK-) = (5.5(+2.1)(-1.8)+/-0.6)x10(-6) and B(B0--> phiK(*0)) = (11.5(+4.5+1.8)(-3.7-1.7))x10(-6). We also see evidence for the decays B0-->phiK0 and B---> phiK(*-). However, since the statistical significance is not overwhelming for these modes, we determine upper limits of

Abstract: The Lambda+c lifetime is measured using 9.0 fb(-1) of e+e- annihilation data collected on or just below the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the CLEO II.V detector at CESR. Using an unbinned maximum likelihood fit, the Lambda+c lifetime is measured to be 179.6+/-6.9(stat)+/-4.4(syst) fs. The precision of this colliding beam measurement is comparable to other measurements, which are based on fixed-target experiments, with different systematic uncertainties.

Abstract: We analyze 9.7x10(6) B_B pairs recorded with the CLEO detector to determine the production ratio of charged to neutral B-meson pairs produced at the Upsilon(4S) resonance. We measure the rates for B0-->J/psiK((*)0) and B+-->J/psiK((*)+) decays and use the world-average B-meson lifetime ratio to extract the relative widths f(+-) / f(00) = gamma(Upsilon(4S)-->B+B-) / gamma(Upsilon(4S)-->B0 B-0)) = 1.04+/-0.07(stat)+/-0.04(syst). With the assumption that f(+-)+f(00) = 1, we obtain f(00) = 0.49+/-0.02(stat)+/-0.01(syst) and f(+-) = 0.51+/-0.02(stat)+/-0.01(syst). This production ratio and its uncertainty apply to all exclusive B-meson branching fractions measured at the Upsilon(4S) resonance.

Abstract: We report on a search for a supersymmetric $\tilde{B}$ meson with mass between 3.5 and 4.5 GeV/$c^2$ using 4.52 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity produced at $\sqrt{s}=10.52$ GeV, just below the $e^+e^-\to B\bar{B}$ threshold, and collected with the CLEO detector. We find no evidence for a light scalar bottom quark.

Abstract: Using a sample of 9.7 million B meson pairs collected with the CLEO detector, we study B decays to the chi_c1 and chi_c2 charmonia states, which are reconstructed via their radiative decays to J/psi. We first measure the branching fraction for inclusive chi_c1 production in B decays to be Br(B->chi_c1 X)=(4.14+-0.31+-0.40)*10^-3, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second one is systematic. We derive the branching fractions for direct chi_c1 and chi_c2 production in B decays by subtracting the known contribution of the decay chain B->psi(2S)X with psi(2S)->chi_c1,2 gamma. We obtain Br[B->chi_c1(direct) X]=(3.83+-0.31+-0.40)*10^-3. No statistically significant signal for chi_c2 production is observed in either case. Using the Feldman-Cousins approach, we determine the 95% confidence intervals to be [0.2, 2.0]*10^-3 for Br(B->chi_c2 X), [0.0,1.7]*10^-3 for Br[B->chi_c2(direct) X], and [0.00,0.44] for the ratio Br[B->chi_c2(direct) X]/Br[B->chi_c1(direct) X]. We also measure the branching ratio Br[B->chi_c2(direct) X_s]/Br[B->chi_c1(direct) X_s] for different X_s configurations by reconstructing B decays into exclusive final states with J/psi, a photon, a kaon, and up to four pions. For all the X_s configurations we observe a strong chi_c1 signal yet no statistically significant chi_c2 signal. We discuss how our results compare with theoretical predictions in different models of charmonium production.

Abstract: Using the CLEO II detector operating at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) e{sup +}e{sup -} collider, we have measured the structure functions in the decay {tau}{sup {+-}}{yields}{pi}{sup {+-}}{pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}{nu}{sub {tau}}, based on a sample corresponding to 4x10{sup 6} produced {tau}-pair events. We determine the integrated structure functions, which depend only on the three pion invariant mass, as well as the structure functions differential in the Dalitz plot variables. We extract model independent limits on non-axial-vector contributions from the measured structure functions as less than 16.6% of the total branching fraction, at the 95% confidence level. Separating the non-axial-vector contributions into scalar and vector contributions, we measure that scalars (vectors) contribute with less than 9.4% (7.3%) to the total branching fraction, at the 95% confidence level. Abstract: The Rhodanian-Provencal Basin is the southernmost part of the Peri-Alpine Seaway developed during the Miocene from Austria to the Mediterranean Sea (Fig. 1). This basin is located in a peripheral or external domain of the Western Alps foreland basin. Flexural subsidence related to alpine thrust loading provides accomodation space.

Abstract: To evaluate visual benefit, predictability and complications after clear lens phakoemulsification and posterior chamber implantation in highly myopic eyes.Thirty-three highly myopic eyes were reviewed at a mean postoperative follow-up of 27 months. The mean age of the 19 patients was 31.04 +/- 5.51 years. The mean preoperative spherical equivalent was -19.50 +/- 7.0 D (-12 to -40 D). Preoperative best spectacle corrected visual acuity was compared with the last postoperative one. Postoperative spherical equivalent was compared with the desired value. All complications were reviewed.A mean visual benefit of 0.24 +/- 0.18 (decimal notation) was noted (p0.05). The mean postoperative spherical equivalent (-2.57 +/- 1.84 D) was not significantly different from the mean previous value (p = 0.75). Retinal detachment arose in the two eyes of the same patient (incidence of 6.1%). BSCVA decreased slightly in only one of the two eyes (0.1). The incidence of Nd-YAG capsulotomy was 30%.Clear lens phakoemulsification is an effective and predictable method for the correction of high myopia. Retinal detachment is the major complication of this technique, even if a severe decrease of the visual acuity is not usual.

Abstract: Using a data sample with integrated luminosity of about 3.9 fb^{-1} collected in e+ e- annihilation with the CLEO-II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have measured the branching ratios for the decay modes Ds -> (eta, eta') pi and Ds -> (eta, eta') rho relative to Ds -> phi pi. These decay modes are among the most common hadronic decays of the Ds's and can be related by factorization to the semileptonic decays Ds -> (eta,eta') l nu. The results obtained are compared with previous CLEO results and with the branching ratios measured for the related semileptonic decays. We also report results on the Cabibbo-suppressed decays of the D+ to the same final states.

Abstract: Using data collected by the CLEO II detector at the center-of-mass energy on or near the Upsilon(4S) resonance, we have determined the 90% confidence level upper limit B(Bbar --> Lambda_c^+ e- X)/B(Bbar --> Lambda_c^+ X, Lambdabar_c^- X) < 0.05 for electrons with momentum above 0.6 GeV/c. Abstract: We have made a first measurement of the lepton momentum spectrum in a sample of events enriched in neutral B's through a partial reconstruction of B0 --> D*- l+ nu. This spectrum, measured with 2.38 fb**-1 of data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance by the CLEO II detector, is compared directly to the inclusive lepton spectrum from all Upsilon(4S) events in the same data set. These two spectra are consistent with having the same shape above 1.5 GeV/c. From the two spectra and two other CLEO measurements, we obtain the B0 and B+ semileptonic branching fractions, b0 and b+, their ratio, and the production ratio f+-/f00 of B+ and B0 pairs at the Upsilon(4S). We report b+/b0=0.950 (+0.117-0.080) +- 0.091, b0 = (10.78 +- 0.60 +- 0.69)%, and b+ = (10.25 +- 0.57 +- 0.65)%. b+/b0 is equivalent to the ratio of charged to neutral B lifetimes, tau+/tau0., 14 page, postscript file also available at http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Heart rate (HR) at the ventilatory threshold (VT) is often used to prescribe exercise intensity in cardiac rehabilitation. Some studies have reported no significant difference between HR at VT and HR measured at the end of a 6-min walk test (6-MWT) in cardiac patients. The aim of this work was to assess the potential equivalence between those parameters at the individual level. METHOD: Three groups of subjects performed a stress test and a 6-MWT: 22 healthy elderlies (GES, 77 +/- 3.7 years), 10 stable coronary artery disease (CAD) patients (GMI, 50.9 +/- 4.2 years) and 30 patients with chronic heart failure (GHF, 63.3 +/- 10 years). We analyzed the correlation, mean bias, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) of the mean bias and the magnitude of the bias between 6-MWT-HR and VT-HR. RESULTS: There was a significant difference between 6-MWT and VT-HR in GHF (99.1 +/- 8.8 vs 91.6 +/- 18.6 bpm, P=0.016) but not in GES and GMI. The correlation between those 2 parameters was high for GMI (r=0.78, P\textless0.05), and moderate for GES and GHF (r=0.48 and 0.55, respectively, P\textless0.05). The 95% CI of bias was large (\textgreater30%) in GES and GHF and acceptable in GMI (8-12%). CONCLUSION: 6-MWT-HR and VT-HR do not appear interchangeable at the individual level in healthy elderlies and CHF patients. In CAD patients, further larger studies and/or the development of other walk tests could help in confirming the interest of a training prescription based on walking performance, after an exhaustive study of their cardiometabolic requirements.

Abstract: Using data accumulated by the CLEO I detector operating at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have measured the ratio {ital R}={Gamma}({tau}{r arrow}{ital e}{bar {nu}}{sub {ital e}}{nu}{sub {tau}})/{Gamma}{sub 1}, where {Gamma}{sub 1} is the {tau} decay rate to final states with one charged particle. We find {ital R}=0.2231{plus minus}0.0044{plus minus}0.0073 where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. Together with the measured topological one-charged-particle branching fraction, this yields the branching fraction of the {tau} lepton to electrons, {ital B}{sub {ital e}}=0.192{plus minus}0.004{plus minus}0.006.

Abstract: We report new measurements of semileptonic branching fractions of $B$ mesons produced at the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ resonance determined by fitting the inclusive electron and muon momentum spectra to different theoretical models. Using $B(\overline{B}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}X{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}})$ to denote the average of the semileptonic branching fractions for $B$ decay to electrons and muons, we obtain $B(\overline{B}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}X{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}})=(10.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4)%$ using the refined free-quark model of Altarelli et al., and $B(\overline{B}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}X{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}})=(11.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4)%$ using a modified version of the form-factor model of Isgur et al., in which the ${D}^{**}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$ contribution is allowed to float in the fit. The average of these two results is $B(\overline{B}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}X{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}})=(10.8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4)%$, where the errors are statistical, systematic uncertainties in the measurement, and systematic uncertainties associated with the theoretical models, respectively. Semileptonic branching fractions as low as this are difficult to accommodate in theoretical models where hadronic $B$-meson decays arise only from spectator diagrams. We use dilepton yields to limit the uncertainty in the semileptonic branching fraction due to the possible existence of non-$B\overline{B}$ decays of the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$. In addition, we tag neutral $B$ mesons using the decays ${\overline{B}}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{D}^{*+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and ${\overline{B}}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{D}^{*+}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$ to obtain the first direct measurement of semileptonic branching fractions for neutral $B$ mesons; the average of the electron and muon results for neutral $B$ mesons is $B({\overline{B}}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}X{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}})=(9.9\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}3.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.9)%$.

Abstract: We have studied hadronic decays of {ital B} mesons. We report measurements of exclusive branching ratios of several charm decay modes of {ital B} mesons to final states with a {ital D} or {ital D}{sup *} and one to three charged pions or a charged {rho} and to final states with a {psi} or {psi}{prime}, a kaon, and up to two charged pions. We have also measured inclusive branching ratios for {ital B} decays to {ital D} and {ital D}{sup *} and the spectra of these particles in {ital B} decays. The total charm content in {ital B} decay is found to be (101{plus minus}12)%. The branching ratios and spectra are compared to form-factor models. We extract the parameters {ital a}{sub 1} and {ital a}{sub 2} of the model of Bauer, Stech, and Wirbel and the {ital D}{sub {ital S}} decay constant. The masses of the {ital {bar B}} {sup 0} and {ital B}{sup {minus}} mesons are measured. The mass difference between {ital {bar B}} {sup 0} and {ital B}{sup {minus}} is found to be {minus}0.4{plus minus}0.6{plus minus}0.5 MeV/{ital c}{sup 2}.

Abstract: This paper summarizes the main conclusions of a study contracted by the NET Team to the CEA, with Framatome as subcontractor, to perform predesign and feasibility studies of the NET shielding blanket segments. A first phase of the study has been devoted to a comparative assessment of candidate blanket concepts, according to a list of criteria including the main design features, the operating performances and the relevant manufacturing process. A second phase of the study is currently in progress, with the dual objective of producing a detailed design of the selected concept for the updated NET configuration, and proposing a development programme for the qualification of the specific manufacturing methods and the verification of the target performances.

Abstract: Cyclic AMP accumulation in human colon adenocarcinoma cells in culture (HT-29) is known to be particularly sensitive to the stimulating action of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP). This property was exploited as a means of investigating the possible role of VIP as a humoral mediator in the watery diarrhoea syndrome. Our results showed that plasma from two patients with watery diarrhoea syndrome associated with ganglioneuroblastoma and pheochromocytoma strongly stimulated cyclic AMP accumulation in HT-29 cells, whereas plasma from normal subjects and patients with other diarrhoeal disorders had no effect. The stimulation induced by serial dilutions of plasma from patients paralleled the VIP-induced response. Preincubation of these plasmas with specific anti-VIP antibody prevented their stimulatory effects. Plasma sampled after the arrest of diarrhoea (spontaneous or after surgical resection of tumours) elicited AMP rise in HT-29 cells. Tumour extract stimulated cyclic AMP accumulation in HT-29 cells with a dose-response curve which was superimposable on the one obtained with standard VIP. The results lend support to the hypothesis that VIP is a humoral mediator in WDS and suggest that the diarrhoea is mediated through a VIP-induced accumulation of cyclic AMP in intestinal epithelial cells.

Abstract: We report the results of a new search for flavor-changing neutral-current decays of the b quark and present a 90%-confidence-level upper limit for the branching fraction for B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${l}^{+}$${l}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$X of 1.2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}3}$.

Abstract: We have measured the inclusive branching ratio for B..-->..psiX to be (1.09 +- 0.16 +- 0.21)%, and the exclusive branching ratios for B/sup -/..-->..psiK/sup -/ and B-bar /sup 0/..-->..psiK-bar /sup *//sup 0/ to be (0.09 +- 0.05)% and (0.41 +- 0.18)%, respectively. The mass difference between neutral and charged B mesons is 1.1 +- 2.1 MeV, while the difference between the mass of UPSILON(4S) and twice the mean B-meson mass is 18.5 +- 3.0 MeV. The psi momentum distribution implies a substantial two-body decay (in agreement with direct measurements), but also some combination of B..-->..psiX with M/sub X/>1.5 GeV, and B..-->..psi'X.

Abstract: We have observed ..lambda../sub c/ baryons in nonresonant e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at energies around ..sqrt..s = 10.5 GeV through their decay to ..lambda pi../sup +/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/. We measure the branching fraction to be (2.8 +- 0.7 +- 1.1)%. The momentum spectrum of the ..lambda../sub c/ is similar to that of charmed mesons, providing a constraint on models of charmed-quark hadronization.
