Abstract

Transdisciplinary research (TDR) aims at identifying implementable solutions to difficult sustainability problems and at fostering social learning. It requires a well-managed collaboration among multidisciplinary scientists and multisectoral stakeholders. Performing TDR is challenging, particularly for foreign researchers working in countries with different institutional and socio-cultural conditions. There is a need to synthesize and share experience among researchers as well as practitioners regarding how TDR can be conducted under specific contexts. In this paper, we aim to evaluate and synthesize our unique experience in conducting TDR projects in Asia. We applied guiding principles of TDR to conduct a formative evaluation of four consortium projects on sustainable land and water management in China, the Philippines, and Vietnam. In all projects, local political conditions restricted the set of stakeholders that could be involved in the research processes. The set of involved stakeholders was also affected by the fact that stakeholders in most cases only participate if they belong to the personal network of the project leaders. Language barriers hampered effective communication between foreign researchers and stakeholders in all projects and thus knowledge integration. The TDR approach and its specific methods were adapted to respond to the specific cultural, social, and political conditions in the research areas, also with the aim to promote trust and interest of the stakeholders throughout the project. Additionally, various measures were implemented to promote collaboration among disciplinary scientists. Based on lessons learned, we provide specific recommendations for the design and implementation of TDR projects in particular in Asia.

Abstract

International audience; Global hydrological models contribute to the understanding and quantification of the global water cycle. However, large uncertainties persist on the one hand due to the simplified representation of hydrological processes for a global scale analysis and, on the other hand due to input data uncertainties, e.g. climate forcing and data to the anthropogenic alteration of the water cycle. The time-variable solutions of the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission provide an independent observation of water storage change with global coverage, which can be used to improve global hydrological models. For this purpose, an ensemble Kalman filter approach is applied to assimilate GRACE total water storage (TWS) change grids into the WaterGAP Global Hydrology Model (WGHM). In contrast to existing studies, our approach involves the full error information of the GRACE solutions, i.e. spatial correlations, as well as the full spatial resolution of the data. To guarantee a realistic estimation of the uncertainties introduced by the climate forcing data, their covariance matrices are determined from an ensemble of forcing fields from different state-of-the-art climate inputs. Finally, the errors are propagated to the assimilated water storage outputs. Here, the results are presented with respect to the precipitation input.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Skin aging causes changes such as wrinkles and flaccidity leading to a large demand for aesthetic procedures, including dermal filling. A key agent in dermal filling is hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan. However, it is a hydrophilic macromolecule that experiences great difficulty in crossing the skin barrier causing most commercial formulations containing it to be injectable, which in turn brings risks since they involve an invasive technique. In that sense, the aim of this study was to develop and characterize nanoparticles obtained from ionic interaction between HA and lysine (Lys) for use as a potential agent of dermal filling for topical application, increasing and improving its applicability and safety. To this end, nanoparticles were obtained by dripping of Lys over HA under magnetic stirring. A nanometric size was confirmed and a suitable surface charge was obtained by zeta potential. Nanoparticles were almost spherical in shape with a smooth surface. Interaction between raw materials for preparing nanoparticles was studied by FTIR and NMR spectroscopy and an ionic interaction was confirmed. These physicochemical features suggest that obtained nanoparticles can be further used as a topical dermal filling.

178. Global Assessment of Current and Future Groundwater Stress With a Focus on Transboundary Aquifers

Abstract

We quantified groundwater stress worldwide by applying the global water resources and water use model WaterGAP 2.2b (Water ‐ Global Assessment and Prognosis) for current conditions (1981–2010) as well as for the 2050s under the worst‐case greenhouse gas emissions scenario RCP8.5. To improve global‐scale groundwater stress assessments, we suggest three new water quantity‐related groundwater stress indicators as well as a new way for communicating projected future groundwater stress at the grid‐cell level (~55 × 55 km) and for larger spatial units such as transboundary aquifers (>20,000 km2). The new indicators encompass the ratio of net abstractions from groundwater to groundwater recharge, human‐induced changes in groundwater discharge, and human‐induced groundwater depletion. We compare them to four conventional indicators used in the Transboundary Waters Assessment Programme and show how they can add value to global‐scale studies or are even more suitable for indicating groundwater stress. We assess potentials and limitations of all indicators by addressing their level of process representation, data requirements, uncertainty, and the underlying different concepts of sustainable groundwater use. To support adaptation to climate change, we recommend showing both the ensemble mean and the worst‐case scenario of future groundwater stress that we derived from five climate and two irrigation scenarios. For characterizing groundwater stress in spatial units such as transboundary aquifers, areal fractions where a selected indicator threshold is exceeded should be considered. Finally, hot spots of future groundwater stress should be identified by combining relative changes from current conditions with absolute values of future groundwater stress. Abstract

Distributed Electric Propulsion is investigated as a way to increase directional control of aircraft and reduce the vertical tail surface area. A co-design approach is presented where a H∞control method is used to both synthesize longitudinal/lateral control law gains and allocation module while sizing the vertical tail surface area and the propeller actuator bandwidth. The variation of the vertical tail surface area is captured throughout a collection of linearized aircraft systems representing different sizes of the vertical tail reassembled in a Linear Fractional Representation. This approach allows a reduction of 60% of the vertical tail surface area while maintaining desired dynamic behaviors with low actuator bandwidth.

191. Water footprints of cities - indicators for sustainable consumption and production

Abstract

Water footprints have been proposed as sustainability indicators, relating the consumption of goods like food to the amount of water necessary for their production and the impacts of that water use in the source regions. We further developed the existing water footprint methodology, by globally resolving virtual water flows from production to consumption regions for major food crops at 5 arcmin spatial resolution. We distinguished domestic and international flows, and assessed local impacts of export production. Applying this method to three exemplary cities, Berlin, Delhi and Lagos, we find major differences in amounts, composition, and origin of green and blue virtual water imports, due to differences in diets, trade integration and crop water productivities in the source regions. While almost all of Delhi's and Lagos' virtual water imports are of domestic origin, Berlin on average imports from more than 4000 km distance, in particular soy (livestock feed), coffee and cocoa. While 42% of Delhi's virtual water imports are blue water based, the fractions for Berlin and Lagos are 2 and 0.5%, respectively, roughly equal to the water volumes abstracted in these two cities for domestic water use. Some of the external source regions of Berlin's virtual water imports appear to be critically water scarce and/or food insecure. However, for deriving recommendations on sustainable consumption and trade, further analysis of context-specific costs and benefits associated with export production will be required.

Abstract

The Working Group II contribution to the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC WG II AR5, cf. Field et al. 2014) critically reviewed tens of thousands of recent publications to assess current scientific knowledge on climate change impacts, vulnerability and adaptation. Chapter 3 of the report focuses on freshwater resources, but water issues are also prominent in other sectoral chapters and in the regional chapters of the Working Group II report, as well as in various chapters of the Working Group I contribution (IPCC WG I AR5, cf. Stocker et al. 2013). With this paper, the lead authors, a review editor and the chapter scientist of the freshwater chapter of the WG II AR5 (Jiménez et al. 2014) wish to summarize their assessment of the most relevant risks of climate change related to freshwater systems and to show how assessment and reduction of those risks can be integrated into water management.
