O cyberstalking é uma forma de perseguição que consiste na utilização da internet ou outro instrumento computadorizado, com intuito de assediar ou perseguir alguém, através de ações metódicas, persistentes e indesejáveis geradoras de incômodo na vida das vítimas. Este estudo pretendeu avaliar a prevalência do cyberstalking e analisar as estratégias de coping utilizadas pelas vítimas. Os dados foram recolhidos junto de 259 estudantes do ensino secundário através de um inquérito online composto por um questionário sociodemográfico, a Escala de Avaliação do Cyberstalking e Escala de Coping no Stalking. As análises estatísticas revelaram uma taxa de prevalência real (experiência de pelo menos um comportamento de cyberstalking) de 68.0 % e uma taxa de vitimação autorrelatada (autoidentificação como vítima) de 25.5%. Os comportamentos de cyberstalking mais frequentes foram os de hiperintimidade e as estratégias de coping mais usadas pelas vítimas envolviam evitar o contato ou negar/minimizar os comportamentos do stalker. Os resultados apontam para uma desvalorização pelas vítimas dos comportamentos de perseguição online. Concluímos pela necessidade de realizar ações informativas sobre o tema direcionadas a toda a comunidade, para consciencializar sobre esse problema social, informar sobre as especificidades do fenômeno, bem como disseminar estratégias de prevenção.

This paper attempts to mitigate this gap within the literature concerning the use of social media for cyber engagement (CE) among students. Since students often become upset when network providers intervene, this paper aims to develop a model to measure ethics issues related to engagement with social media. The conducted survey examines social media use with regard to cyber engagement, cyberbullying behaviors, and being bullied, harassed, and stalked. To achieve the objective, this paper employed a questionnaire as the main data collection method and distributed it to 242 students, all of whom use social media. The findings were obtained via a quantitative research method, structural equation modeling, and partial least squares. The findings from our empirical study indicate that the assessment of discriminant validity has become an extensively acknowledged requirement for the analysis of latent variables’ relationships. Goodness of fit indices demonstrates a good fit of the model. Roughly more than half of students indicated they had been bullied, harassed, and stalked online. The proposed model will help campus administration and decision makers to formulate strategies that can significantly reduce cyber harassment among students.

This paper was inspired by the necessity to communicate the dire effects of classic stalking and to outline the penalties enforceable under Art. 190a §1 of the Polish Criminal Code. The specifics of cyberstalking are then enumerated with emphasis on quoted social site internal rules instituted for the prevention of personal harassment.

An emerging concern in relation to the importance of technology and social media in everyday life relates to their ability to facilitate online and offline stalking, domestic violence and escalation to homicide. However, there has been little empirical research or policing and policy attention to this domain. This study examined the extent to which there was evidence of the role of technology and cyberstalking in domestic homicide cases based on the analysis of 41 Domestic Homicide Review (DHR) documents, made available by the Home Office (UK). Three interviews were also conducted with victims or family members of domestic homicide in the UK. It aimed to develop a deeper understanding of the role of technology in facilitating these forms of victimisation to inform further development of investigative practice, risk assessment and safeguarding procedures. Key themes identified by the thematic analysis undertaken related to behavioural and psychological indicators of cyberstalking, evidence of the role of technology in escalation to homicide and the digital capabilities of law enforcement. Overall, the results indicated that: (1) there was evidence of technology and social media playing a facilitating role in these behaviours, (2) the digital footprints of victims and perpetrators were often overlooked in police investigations and the DHR process and (3) determining the involvement of technology in such cases is important for risk assessment and earlier intervention to prevent escalation of behaviour to domestic homicide. The paper deals with the issue of risk factors of communication in cyberspace with specific emphasis on cyberstalking and cybergrooming and has the character of a theoretical study. The main goal of the paper is to define selected risks of Internet communication, to identify the main characteristics of e-aggressors and to determine the legislative framework of cyberstalking and cybergrooming in the Slovak Republic. The first part of the paper defines the essential theoretical background of the researched phenomena from various approaches of authors. The paper also reflects on the typology of aggressors in cyberspace and fundamental demonstrations by which are these undesirable phenomena determined. In the second part, the authors submit the legislative inclusion of the researched issue and emphasize the importance of media education, preventive activities and projects, which can eliminate dangers associated with communication in cyberspace especially in the context of children users. This article investigates the phenomenon of domestic and sexual violence against adult women using digital communications technologies. The article explores terminological and conceptual challenges and describes the empirical research literature in this field to date in relation to digital dating abuse, intimate partner cyberstalking, technology-facilitated sexual assault, image-based sexual abuse, and online sexual harassment. The article also discusses policy and practice responses to this growing problem, as well as future directions for research. We argue that research and practice need to be guided by existing conceptual frameworks that utilize gender and actor–network theory to understanding the causes and consequences of women's experiences of abuse and violence facilitated by digital technologies. Digital abuse is on the rise. People increasingly use technology to perpetrate and exacerbate abusive conduct like stalking and harassment, manipulating digital tools to control and harm their victims. By some accounts, 95% of domestic-abuse cases involve technology, while a sizeable chunk of the U.S. population now admits to having suffered or perpetrated serious abuse online. To make matters worse, people often trivialize digital abuse or underestimate its prevalence. Even among those who do appreciate its severity, there remains ample disagreement about how to address it. Although law can be a powerful tool to regulate digital abuse, legal responses are by no means the only option. This Essay explores how both computer code and social norms can prevent and mitigate forms of digital abuse that aren't easily addressed through law. These regulatory responses should be grounded in empathy for victims of digital abuse. Empathy demands imaginatively putting oneself in a victim's place and attempting to feel as they feel--a trying task made easier by heeding victims' stories. We can neither understand nor address digital abuse unless we view technology in a deeper social context and grapple with how and why digital abuse is harmful. This Essay urges key figures to exhibit greater empathy in developing code and norms to help victims, proposing ways that technologists, police officers, educators, employers, and victims can use these extralegal means to combat an increasingly pervasive form of abuse. Internet technologies, given their favorable affordances, can create hospitable environments for some deviant behaviors. A new concern is known as "cyberstalking"- the use of information and communications technology (ICT) to harass individuals - has recently emerged as a new and growing problem. This article explores the definition of stalking and cyberstalking and clarifies their similarities and differences and analyze the prevalence of cyberstalking in modern society. The author then focuses on the challenges of investigating cyberstalking faced with law enforcement agencies. These significant challenges include: lacking awareness and skills in recognizing and investigating, jurisdictional and statutory authority limitations, and difficulties in obtaining internet account information of suspects. This research was an investigative enquiry into the forms, extent, effects and contributing factors of cyberbullying in Higher and Tertiary Education institutions in Zimbabwe. The study used one such institution as case study. A survey was conducted on a sample of 380 undergraduate students (n=380) out of a total of 3800 student population (N=3800) in the institution. Interviews were also conducted on 12 volunteers in order to obtain additional information from the participants, especially on contributing factors. The Findings indicate that cyberbullying is very common in these institutions coming in the form of phone calls, emails, text messages, video clips and online chats. The extent of Cyberbullying is very high, with 75% of respondents admitting having received a threatening message in campus, while 83% confirmed to have seen offensive messages while socializing with friends online. Key effects were identified as affecting students in their relationships on and off campus and mental health problems. Main contributing factors to cyberbullying were identified as gender issues, cultural/ ethnic differences, general dislike, and some taking it as an online game (fun). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The fact is that technological development has improved many aspects of life, but at the same time, according to the principle of a double-edged sword, it created justifiable fear in view of the numerous negative consequences of its misuse. A special segment of technological development where such misuses are increasingly present are computer networks. Such fear is further expressed when it comes to juveniles, who, due to the characteristics of this development period, represent easy targets, which often leads to serious and long-term consequences. Although this category of people, as a rule, works well with such innovations, their inexperience can easily put them in danger. For the above reasons, this problem should be approached from a theoretical point of view. It seems that questions that have been discussed in this paper deserve special attention: the impact of internet dependency on victimization; typology of juvenile victims; characteristics of victims of internet pedophilia. The use of meta-analysis has resulted in the synthesis of the results of existing research and attitudes, which served as a basis for a critical review and an attempt to give a modest contribution to solving these issues.

The harms crime victims experience extend far beyond the initial victimization and can have severe negative impacts on daily life. Using data collected via a self-report survey from 477 cyberstalking victims, the current study explores the consequences associated with being cyberstalked. Specifically, we seek to identify which characteristics of the victimization incident, cyberstalker, and victim impact the likelihood of experiencing four types of consequences – those that are school-, work-, social-, and health-related. Findings revealed that dimensions of the incident, along with offender and victim characteristics, were significantly related to experiencing consequences as a result of being cyberstalked. Increased use of technology and the internet have allowed for better means of communications while removing the geographic boundaries that once existed. However, the added benefit can soon be diminished when technology is in the hands of a stalker. Cyberstalking is relatively new but has posed life threatening safety concerns for individuals around the world. This exploratory study of 121 students examines incidents of cyberstalking by evaluating the style and length of communications between a stalker and victim along with the perceived level of fear related to the incident. The study illustrates that it is essential to report these incidents immediately and to the right authority before it is too late. Awareness of cyberstalking and guidelines to mitigate the risk are essential steps to keep yourself safe from incidents, no matter how harmless they may seem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Why do some people find online hate material more disturbing than others? We use a random sample of Americans between the ages 15 and 36 to address this question. Descriptive results indicate that a majority of respondents surveyed find online hate material very or extremely disturbing, while smaller shares find it moderately, slightly, or not at all disturbing. We utilize an ordinal logistic regression to explore factors associated with these varying perceptions of hate material. Results demonstrate that males and political conservatives find hate material less disturbing than females and political moderates or liberals. These results are expected, as online hate is largely dominated by right‐wing extremists who frequently target females and non‐conservatives. We also find that individuals who see hate material more frequently find it more disturbing, as do those who have been the target of hate or criminality online. Finally, individuals who are more accepting of violating social norms are less disturbed by online hate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Online victimization via cyberbullying and cyberstalking are plaguing our young online users. These tormenting and intrusive behaviors have infiltrated relationship formation, online communication and social identity. Friends and romantic partners have become increasingly dependent on the use of technology to initiate relationships. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the current state of these online crimes and the involvement of youth and young adults. We will consider current responses by our criminal justice system, as well as our educational and community groups. Based on what is currently implemented and its success factor, we will make our assertions about the effectiveness of scholastic work and its influence on what we are doing to combat these forms of cybervictimization.
