The Vrolik ethnographical collection consisted of roughly 300 skulls, mummified heads, skeletons, pelvises, wet-preserved preparations, and plaster models, collected by Gerard Vrolik (1775-1859) and his son Willem (1801-1863). Most prominent in this collection were the skulls, of which 177 remain in the collection of present-day Museum Vrolik. These skulls-a troubling heritage of colonialism and scientific racism-are the central subjects of this paper, which considers the changing meanings and values of these skulls for racial science over approximately 160 years, between ± 1800 and 1960. These shifting meanings are analysed using the skulls themselves as primary sources, including the labels, numbers and handwriting present on them or their stands. Central topics addressed will be matters of classification, hierarchy, scientific bias, and disciplinary development of racial anthropology from the study and collection of idealized national types to a quantitative craniometry of populations. This paper demonstrates that during 160 years of study of this same set of crania, the skulls of white European origin gradually lost racial relevance and were increasingly normalized, whereas the skulls of dark-skinned people of African descent continued to be categorized in a typological racial scheme and as such were increasingly othered., (© 2023. This paper studies the craniological variability of closely related species-the pine marten Martes martes, the American marten M. americana, and the sable M. zibellina. The study included the data on 22 nonmetric characters of skulls in 2344 individuals. The studied Martes species were revealed to have an evident species-specific manifestation of the investigated craniological characters. Sables stand apart most of all in the interspecific comparison of populations. The degree of epigenetic variability is somewhat higher in the sable than in the pine marten. The American marten significantly differs from Eurasian species in the manifestation of the nonmetric skull characters, which is noted when analyzing even a small number of samples. For patients with occipital malformation, it is difficult to obtain reliable stability using three screws on the midline. A new aliform occipitocervical internal fixation system was designed. The occiput was fixed with 3, 7, or 11 screws, and a three-dimensional finite element model of the system was established. A compressive preload of 40 N combined with a pure moment of 1.5 Nm was applied to simulate normal flexion, extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation. The stress distribution across the screws on the occiput and the occipital displacement produced by the newly developed system were compared with those produced by the DePuy SUMMIT system. Compared with the SUMMIT system (control group), in the new system, the maximum stress on the occiputs fixed with 3 screws (group A) and 7 screws (group B) increased by 16.5% and 15.0%, respectively. In contrast, the maximum stress on the occiput fixed with 11 screws (group C) decreased by 15.6%. In addition, the maximum occipital displacements under extension decreased by 10.0%, 11.4%, and 11.8% in the A, B, and, C groups, respectively. Our results indicate that both group A and the control group exhibited sufficient strength and instant stability; however, group C exhibited the highest stability and the lowest maximum von Mises stress. Background: The aim of this study was to determine if fracture reduction, fracture pattern, and patient-related factors influence clinical outcome after locked-plate fixation of displaced proximal humeral fractures.Methods: Ninety-eight patients (mean age, 61.1 ± 11.2 years) with a proximal humeral fracture involving the anatomical neck (type C according to the OTA/AO classification system) were included. Clinical outcome was determined by age and sex-adjusted Constant score (CS%) and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score. Fracture reduction was quantitatively determined by 3 parameters (head-shaft displacement, head-shaft alignment, and cranialization of the greater tuberosity), and patients were divided into groups according to anatomical reduction, acceptable reduction, or malreduction. Relative risk (RR) for complications, revision surgery, and inferior clinical outcome (CS of <50%) was determined according to the quality of fracture reduction and fracture pattern (disruption of the medial hinge; type-C3 fracture) and patient-related factors (age; comorbidities).Results: After a mean of 3.1 ± 1.5 years, the mean CS% and DASH score were 54.8% ± 28.0% and 31.9 ± 24.8, respectively. The complication rate was 32.7% (n = 32), and 27 patients (27.6%) required revision surgery. Anatomical or acceptable fracture reduction was achieved in 40 (40.8%) of the patients. This resulted in a significantly lower complication rate (20.0% compared with 41.4% among the patients with malreduction; p = 0.027), a trend of lower revision rate (20% compared with 32.8%; p = 0.165), and better clinical outcome (mean CS% of 65.4% ± 28.2% compared with 47.6% ± 25.7%; p = 0.002) without a higher risk for osteonecrosis of the humeral head (5% compared with 10.3%). Cranialization of the greater tuberosity of >5 mm (n = 25), head-shaft displacement of >5 mm (n = 50), and valgus head-shaft alignment (n = 12) all increased the RR for inferior clinical outcome by twofold to threefold. Conversely, a patient age of >65 years (n = 31) and an OTA/AO type-C3 fracture pattern (n = 38) were not significantly associated with complications and inferior clinical outcome (RR, 0.9 to 1.8).Conclusions: Anatomical fracture reduction with a locked plate significantly improved the clinical outcome of unstable and displaced proximal humeral fractures involving the anatomical neck.Level Of Evidence: Therapeutic Level IV. Purpose: Lateral radiographs are commonly used to assess cervical sagittal alignment. Three assessment methods have been described and are commonly utilized in clinical practice. These methods are described for perfect lateral cervical radiographs, however in everyday practice radiograph quality varies. The aim of this study was to compare the reliability and reproducibility of 3 cervical lordosis (CL) measurement methods.Methods: Forty-four standing lateral radiographs were randomly chosen from a lateral long-cassette radiograph database. Measurements of CL were performed with: Cobb method C2-C7 (CM), C2-C7 posterior tangent method (PTM), sum of posterior tangent method for each segment (SPTM). Three independent orthopaedic surgeons measured CL using the three methods on 44 lateral radiographs. One researcher used the three methods to measured CL three times at 4-week time intervals. Agreement between the methods as well as their intra- and interobserver reliability were tested and quantified by intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and median error for a single measurement (SEM). ICC of 0.75 or more reflected an excellent agreement/reliability. The results were compared with repeated ANOVA test, with p < 0.05 considered as significant.Results: All methods revealed excellent intra- and interobserver reliability. Agreement (ICC, SEM) between three methods was (0.89°, 3.44°), between CM and SPTM was (0.82°, 4.42°), between CM and PTM was (0.80°, 4.80°) and between PTM and SPTM was (0.99°, 1.10°). Mean values CL for a CM, PTM, SPTM were 10.5° ± 13.9°, 17.5° ± 15.6° and 17.7° ± 15.9° (p < 0.0001), respectively. The significant difference was between CM vs PTM (p < 0.0001) and CM vs SPTM (p < 0.0001), but not between PTM vs SPTM (p > 0.05).Conclusions: All three methods appeared to be highly reliable. Although, high agreement between all measurement methods was shown, we do not recommend using Cobb measurement method interchangeably with PTM or SPTM within a single study as this could lead to error, whereas, such a comparison between tangent methods can be considered. Custom-made prosthetic replacement is a common method of limb reconstruction after surgery of bone tumors. A custom-made tumor knee prosthesis was retrieved after fracture of the tibial stem. The fracture of stem was considered to be associated with some misalignment between the axis of femur and that of the femoral stem, which might cause stress concentration within the tibial component and eventually lead to fracture. To verify this hypothesis, finite element analysis was carried out to study the effect of various tilting degree (6 forward, 0 and 6 backward) of the stem in the sagittal plane on the stress distribution within the tibial component. The calculated maximum Von Mises stress in the tibial component was 225.8, 362.8 and 511.3MPa when the femoral component was tilted for 6 forward, and backward, respectively. The results demonstrated that the misalignment of femoral components in the sagittal plane has marked effect on the stress distribution of the tibial component. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Craniofacial growth changes in young children are not yet completely understood. Up-to-date references for craniofacial measurements are crucial for clinical assessment of orthodontic anomalies, craniofacial abnormalities and subsequent planning of interventions. Aim: To provide normal reference data and to identify growth patterns for craniofacial dimensions of European boys and girls aged 3–6 years. Subjects and methods: Using standard anthropometric methodology, body weight, body height and 23 craniofacial measurements were acquired for a cross-sectional sample of 681 healthy children (362 boys and 319 girls) aged 3–6 years from Germany, Italy and Lithuania. Descriptive statistics, correlation coefficients, percentage annual changes and percentage growth rates were used to analyse the dataset. Results: Between the ages of 3–6 years, craniofacial measurements showed age- and sex-related patterns independent from patterns observed for body weight and body height. Sex-related differences were observed in the majority of craniofacial measurements. In both sexes, face heights and face depths showed the strongest correlation with age. Growth patterns differed by craniofacial measurement and can be summarised into eight distinct age- and sex-related patterns. Conclusion: This study provided reference data and identified sex- and age-related growth patterns of the craniofacial complex of young European children, which may be used for detailed assessment of normal growth in paediatrics, maxillofacial reconstructive surgery and possibly for forensic age assessment. Paul Broca surmised that the short and broad—brachycephalic—skulls of the earliest European settlers had become longer and narrower—dolichocephalic—in modern populations due to the blending of different races. Swedish anatomist Anders Retzius had two brachycephalic skulls said to be from contemporary Basque individuals, a claim suited to test Broca’s hypothesis. Broca worked with fellow anatomist and surgeon Pedro González Velasco, the founding father of Spanish anthropology, to gather a large number of Basque skulls. In its time, this was the most fascinating collection owned by the Anthropological Society of Paris. This article explains how Broca and Velasco were able to gather such a sizeable array of specimens, which they had collected at a location known at first by the code name of “Z.” Although Broca finally concluded that the origin of the Retzius skulls could not be determined, his research was to spark anthropologists’ interest in the language and origins of the Basque people. Objectives: To analyse and compare the effects during Herbst treatment (Tx) when combined with lingual (completely customized) or labial (straight-wire) multibracket appliances (MBA). Subjects and methods: 18 Class II division 1 patients (Overjet ≥ 5 mm, Class II molar relationship ≥ 0.5 cusp width bilaterally or 1 cusp width unilaterally, median age 16.0 years) treated with lingual (completely customized) MBA in combination with a Herbst appliance were matched (sagittal molar relationship and skeletal maturity) to 18 Class II division 1 Herbst patients treated with labial (straight-wire) MBA. Lateral cephalograms from before, during and after all active Tx were analysed using the SO-analysis and standard cephalometric variables. Results: During the Herbst phase (LINGUAL: mean = 13.9 months, LABIAL: mean = 8.5 months) smaller average Overjet and molar relationship changes were seen in the LINGUAL (5.3 mm/4.4 mm) than in the LABIAL (8.0 mm/5.9 mm) group. This was due to the fact that the LABIAL patients were treated to overcorrected sagittal relationships. During the total Tx period (Herbst + MBA; LINGUAL: mean = 3.1 years, LABIAL: mean = 1.9 years) the average amounts of Overjet and molar relationship changes were similar in both groups (LINGUAL: 4.0 mm/3.3 mm, LABIAL: 5.1 mm/3.7 mm). Overjet correction was achieved by 45% (LINGUAL) and 37% (LABIAL) skeletal changes; the respective amounts for molar relationship correction were 55% (LINGUAL) and 51% (LABIAL). It has been brought to the attention of the authors of Fordisc 3.1 that Hispanic samples will often misclassify as Japanese when Asian population samples are included. This study examined this problem in an effort to better document the occurrence and deduce possible causes via comparative analyses. Asian and Hispanic samples were first compared utilizing the existing samples from the University of Tennessee's Forensic Data Bank. Additional modern Japanese, Thai, and Korean samples collected by the first author that have previously not been utilized in analyses were subsequently included. Results of this study confirm frequent rates of misclassification among Hispanic and Japanese groups. Furthermore, a close morphological relationship is identified through further group comparisons and the addition of data used in conjunction with Fordisc samples. Similarities identified among Hispanic and Japanese crania may stem from similar population histories reflected in ancestral Native American and East Asian populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Sagittal spinopelvic alignment changes associated with degenerative facet joint arthritis have been assessed in a few studies. It has been documented that patients with facet joint degeneration have higher pelvic incidence, but the relationship between facet joint degeneration and other sagittal spinopelvic alignment parameters is still disputed. Our purpose was to evaluate the correlation between the features of sagittal spinopelvic alignment and facet joint degeneration.Methods: Imaging data of 140 individuals were retrospectively analysed. Lumbar lordosis, pelvic tilt (PT), pelvic incidence (PI), sacral slope, and height of the lumbar intervertebral disc were measured on lumbar X-ray plates. Grades of facet joint degeneration were evaluated from the L2 to S1 on CT scans. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient and Student's t-test were used for statistical analyses, and a P-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant.Results: PI was positively associated with degeneration of the facet joint at lower lumbar levels (p < 0.001 r = 0.50 at L5/S1 and P = 0.002 r = 0.25 at L4/5). A significant increase of PT was found in the severe degeneration group compared with the mild degeneration group: 22.0° vs 15.7°, P = 0.034 at L2/3;21.4°vs 15.1°, P = 0.006 at L3/4; 21.0° vs 13.5°, P = 0.000 at L4/5; 20.8° vs 12.1°, P = 0.000 at L5/S1.Conclusion: Our results indicate that a high PI is a predisposing factor for facet joint degeneration at the lower lumbar spine, and that severe facet joint degeneration may accompany with greater PT at lumbar spine. Study Design: A retrospective clinical review.Objective: To evaluate the sagittal correction efficacy of a thoracic pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO), to determine and predict changes at both the cervical and lumbar mobile unfused segments after whether an upper or lower level thoracic PSO.Summary Of Background Data: Thoracic PSO is a technically challenging but increasingly valid procedure in the treatment of fixed thoracic deformities.Anatomical characteristics differentiate upper and lower segment thoracic PSOs and define its corrective ability. There is yet paucity in the literature concerning the causality between the osteotomy level and the reciprocal changes observed postoperatively at the adjacent unfused curves.Methods: Data collection from a single institutional database was carried out retrospectively by reviewing medical records and imaging of fixed thoracic kyphotic deformity patients submitted to a single level thoracic PSO.Results: Seventeen patients (11M:6F), with a mean age of 44 years (range, 17-76). Fifty-nine percent had a previous spine surgery. The mean follow-up was of 55 months (range, 27-122). In six patients PSO was performed in the upper thoracic segment (T1-T6) and in 11 patients between T7 and T12 (lower thoracic segment), allowing a mean local kyphosis correction of 31° and 41° respectively. The mean cervical and lumbar lordosis globally improved. The upper thoracic PSO group had a significant improvement of the cervical lordosis with a mean C7 slope correction of 28° (P = 0.004), whereas in the lower thoracic PSO group a more pronounced correction of the maximal lumbar lordosis was observed (22°, P = 0.033).Conclusion: After a fixed sagittal thoracic deformity, the predominant lordotic compensation seems to occur at the nearest mobile curve from the deformity apex. The PSO-induced restoration of the thoracic kyphosis relieved the compensatory cervical and/or lumbar excessive lordosis, which were present preoperatively and are now no longer needed to achieve balance and maintain horizontal gaze.Level Of Evidence: 4. The governors representing the Tsar in eighteenth-century Siberia had a key role in opening up the Russian East to commerce and troops, but very much also to science. One of the experts called in to explore both the geographic and ethnic nature of the vast empire was Julius von Stubendorff (1811-1878). In the process, von Stubendorff took detailed notes of the languages and customs he encountered. This article introduces four letters which shed light on the complexities of the era. Background: We utilized in vivo 3- dimensional (D) computed tomography (CT) to determine whether the preoperatively planned anterior and posterior opening gap heights correlated with the real gaps following opening wedge high tibial osteotomy (HTO), as well as the relationships between anterior and posterior gap heights and change in sagittal tibial slope.Methods: This prospective study involved 41 patients (41 knees) undergoing navigation HTO for primary medial osteoarthritis. Mechanical axis (MA), weight-bearing line (WBL) ratio, and posterior tibial slope were measured on radiographs preoperatively and after 3 months. The anterior and posterior opening gaps created by osteotomy were measured using in vivo 3D CT and the patients were classified into a larger anterior or posterior gap group.Results: Of the 41 patients, 24 (59 %) had larger anterior and 17 (41 %) had larger posterior gaps. There were no between group differences in preoperative and postoperative slopes, or in change in slope. The correlation between preoperatively planned and postoperative posterior gaps was good, whereas the correlation of anterior gaps was only fair. Bland-Altman plots showed poor agreement for both preoperative and postoperative anterior and posterior gaps. The mean systematic difference (bias) was 2.3 mm (p < 0.001) for anterior and -1.0 mm (p = 0.033) for posterior gaps.Conclusions: Preoperatively calculated opening gaps, which were planned to be larger posteriorly than anteriorly to minimize the change in slope after surgery, did not correspond with postoperative opening gaps on 3D CT. Brachycephalic airway syndrome in dogs is typified by a variety of anatomical abnormalities causing a diverse spectrum of clinical signs of varying intensity. This variability makes the assessment of the surgical outcome after upper airway surgery difficult. Using a structured questionnaire, the present study investigated the dog owner-perceived severity and frequency of a broad spectrum of welfare-relevant impairments 2 weeks before and 6 months after brachycephalic dogs underwent a recently developed multi-level upper airway surgery. All dogs underwent surgical treatment of stenotic nares (ala-vestibuloplasty), the nasal cavity (laser-assisted turbinectomy, LATE), the pharynx (palatoplasty and tonsillotomy), and if indicated, laryngeal surgery (laser-assisted ablation of everted ventricles and partial cuneiformectomy). Owners of brachycephalic dogs ( n  = 102) referred for upper airway surgery were eligible to participate. Questionnaire data from owners of 37 Pugs and 25 French bulldogs were evaluated. In all dogs, the clinical signs associated with brachycephaly improved markedly after surgery. Most encouraging was the striking reduction in life-threatening events by 90% (choking fits decreased from 60% to 5% and collapse from 27% to 3%). The incidence of sleeping problems decreased from 55% to 3%, and the occurrence of breathing sounds declined by approximately 50%. There was a marked improvement in exercise tolerance and a modest improvement in heat tolerance. Dogs with severe brachycephaly benefitted substantially from multi-level surgery, and there were particular improvements in the incidences of severe impairment and life-threatening events. However, despite the marked improvement perceived by dog owners, these dogs remained clinically affected and continued to show welfare-relevant impairments caused by these hereditary disorders. Background: In addition to its role in cell adhesion and gene expression in the canonical Wingless/integrated Wnt signaling pathway, β-catenin also regulates genes that underlie the transmission of nerve impulses. Mutations of CTNNB1 (β-catenin) have recently been described in patients with a wide range of neurodevelopmental disorders (intellectual disability, microcephaly and other syndromic features). We for the first time associate CTNNB1 mutation with hyperekplexia identifying it as an additional candidate for consideration in patients with startle syndrome.Case Presentation: We describe an 11 year old male Polish patient with a de novo nonsense mutation in CTNNB1 who in addition to the major features of CTNNB1-related syndrome including intellectual disability and microcephaly, exhibited hyperekplexia and apraxia of upward gaze. The patient became symptomatic at the age of 20 months exhibiting delayed speech and psychomotor development. Social and emotional development was normal but mild hyperactivity was noted. Episodic falls when startled by noise or touch were observed from the age of 8.5 years, progressively increasing but never with loss of consciousness. Targeted gene panel next generation sequencing (NGS) and patient-parents trio analysis revealed a heterozygous de novo nonsense mutation in exon 3 of CTNNB1 identifying a novel association of β-catenin with hyperekplexia.Conclusion: We report for the first time a clear association of mutation in CTNNB1 with an atypical syndromic heperekplexia expanding the phenotype of CTNNB1-related syndrome. Consequently CTNNB1 should be added to the growing list of genes to be considered as a cause of startle disease or syndromic hyperekplexia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Study Design: A retrospective cohort study. Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the preoperative factors for postlaminoplasty kyphotic deformity in cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) patients without preoperative kyphotic alignment focused on the cervical sagittal balance. Summary Of Background Data: After laminoplasty (LAMP), appropriate decompression may be obtained when cervical lordosis is maintained to allow the posterior shift of the spinal cord. Therefore, LAMP is not suitable for patients with preoperative cervical kyphosis. However, we sometimes encounter patients who developed postoperative kyphosis despite normal preoperative alignment. The risk factors of postlaminoplasty kyphotic deformity for the patients without preoperative kyphotic alignment are not well known. Methods: A total of 174 consecutive patients who received a double-door LAMP for CSM without preoperative kyphotic alignment and completed a 1-year follow-up were enrolled. Cervical lateral X-ray images obtained in the standing position were measured at the preoperative stage and during a 1-year follow-up visit. The radiographic measurements included the following: (1) C2-7 lordotic angle (C2-7 angle), (2) C2-7 range of motion (C2-7 ROM), (3) CGH (center of gravity of the head)-C7 SVA, and (4) C7 slope. The clinical results were evaluated using the Japanese Orthopedic Association score system for cervical myelopathy (C-JOA score). Results: Postoperative kyphotic deformity was observed in 9 patients (5.2%). The recovery rates of the C-JOA scores at the 1-year follow-up period in the kyphotic deformity (+) group were inferior to those of the kyphotic deformity (-) group. The CGH-C7 SVA and advanced age were detected as preoperative risk factors using multivariate analysis. Cutoff values for predicting postlaminoplasty kyphotic deformity were a CGH-C7 SVA = 42 mm and an age of 75 years. Conclusion: Cervical sagittal imbalance and advanced age were the preoperative risk factors for kyphotic deformity after LAMP for CSM in patients without preoperative cervical kyphotic alignment. Here we discuss the results of research conducted on the variability of anthropological features of the populations of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, China, etc., from the Late Stone Age and Bronze Age. A detailed analysis was carried out on 85 craniologica! series from burial grounds at Gonur and Buston VI (see Table 1). We examined skulls from the steppe, forest-steppe, desert, and semi-desert areas of Central Asia, Ural, Siberia and the North Caucasus. Factor analysis was used to explore the data obtained. Four factors, describing more than 70% of craniologica! variations, were extracted. The first factor (describing 29.6% of variability) differentiated groups according to the lengthwise sizes of the head and face, mostly taking into consideration cranial breadth, bezygomatic diameter, and orbit width, as well as minimum frontal diameters, upper face and nose heights. The second factor (17.4% of variability) differentiated groups mainly according to facial height, nose and orbit heights. The highest loadings of the third factor, which determined 14.9% of variability, considered important characteristics such as cranial length and breadth, and the fourth factor (10,4% of variability) - nose breadth. As a result, we identified two major anthropological groups: the first comprising North Kazakhstan, South Siberia, Altai, and Ural-Volga, populations with larger latitudinal proportions of the head and face, as well as a smaller width of the forehead, upper face height, and height of the nose; and the second comprising the southern territories, including the majority of the populations of Iran, Pakistan, the Indus valley, and the southern regions of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan as well, who had the opposite combination of features: long and narrow heads, high, narrow faces and noses, and round orbits. The analysis conducted has enabled us to affirm that Southern Turkmenistan manifestations of minimal impurities with regard to anthropological components, which could be linked to pastoral surroundings, were not seen prior to the middle of the 2"d millennium BC. During the Triassic, archosauromorphs became one of the first groups of diapsid reptiles to diversify in terms of body size and morphological disparity in both terrestrial and marine ecosystems across Pangaea. This seemingly rapid divergence, and the numerous unique body plans stemming from it, concomitantly has confounded reconstructions of archosauromorph relationships. Teasing apart homology from homoplasy of anatomical characters in this broad suite of body types remains an enormous challenge with the current sample of taxa. Here, we present the postcranial anatomy of Azendohsaurus madagaskarensis, an early archosauromorph from ?Middle to Upper Triassic strata of Madagascar. Azendohsaurus madagaskarensis is known from nearly the entire skeleton in an ontogenetically variable sample. The holotype locality consists of a monotypic bone bed; preservation ranges from complete but disarticulated bones to articulated sections of the skeleton. Azendohsaurus madagaskarensis embodies an aberrant constellation of archosauromorph features, including an elongated neck, a short, stocky tail, robust limbs, and unexpectedly short digits terminating in large recurved unguals on the manus and pes. Together with the cranium, the postcrania reveal A. madagaskarensis to be another representative of a growing coterie of highly apomorphic and bizarre Triassic archosauromorphs. At the same time, recovery and description of the full anatomy of A. madagaskarensis helps to identify a monophyletic grouping of specialized taxa that includes the North American Late Triassic-aged archosauromorphs Trilophosaurus, Spinosuchus, and Teraterpeton, Indian Pamelaria, and Moroccan Azendohsaurus laaroussii. Moreover, information derived from the skeleton of A. madagaskarensis solidifies the systematic position of these taxa among other archosauromorphs. Using the most comprehensively sampled phylogenetic analysis of early archosauromorphs, we found the clade encompassing the aforementioned taxa as the nearest outgroup of Prolacerta broomi + Archosauriformes. The newly recognized clade containing Azendohsaurus, Trilophosaurus, Spinosuchus, Pamelaria, and Teraterpeton demonstrates high morphological disparity even within a closely related group of archosauromorphs, underscores the polyphyly of protorosaurs ( = prolacertiforms), and suggests that most major divergences within this group occurred in the Triassic. Furthermore, our results indicate that craniodental character states ascribed to a herbivorous diet were much more pervasive across Triassic Archosauromorpha than previously conjectured. Rectus Capitis Posterior Minor muscle (RCPm) is one of the deepest and shorter muscles of the posterior region of the neck. RCPm arises from the posterior tubercle on the posterior arch of atlas and inserts on the squamous part of the occipital bone, inferior to the inferior nuchal line and lateral to the external occipital crest at midline. Based on their anatomical location, and their functional role, is considered to be a head extender muscle and an active element in the stabilization of the occipitoatlantal joint. During routine examination of the skulls, in the Morphology Laboratory of the Basic Biomedical Sciences Department, University of Talca, Chile, two unusual fossas were found in the squamous part of occipital bone, of an adult human skull of masculine sex. No other significant bony anomaly was noted, but it is observed that the elevations and depressions are well marked in the skull. The anatomical location of this fossa suggests a relationship with the RCPm muscle that is described in the same location of this finding. Therefore, it is postulated that prolonged improper posture from an early age, could generate a mechanical compression which would result in the finding fossas; this based on Wolff's law, which states that the bone tissue adapts to the mechanical demands placed on him. Objectives: Deformational plagiocephaly and/or brachycephaly (DPB) is a misshapen head presenting at birth or shortly thereafter, caused by extrinsic forces on an infant's malleable cranium. There are two treatment methods available for DPB: helmeting and repositioning. Little is known about the long-term outcomes of these two treatment options. The purpose of this study was to examine children who received helmeting or repositioning therapy for DPB as infants and compare the long-term head shape outcomes of the two groups. Methods: A longitudinal cohort study design was used to evaluate change in head shape of the two groups. One hundred children (50 helmeted, 50 repositioned) were initially evaluated at 6 months or younger for DPB. Anthropometric skull measurements taken as infants before treatment were compared with measurements taken for this study. Inclusion criteria included initial clinic visit at age 6 months or younger, evaluation by the same practitioner, and current age 2-10 years. Cephalic index and cranial vault asymmetry were calculated based on caliper measurements. Results: Data from 100 children were evaluated for this study. Significant differences between the treatment groups in the mean change in cephalic index ( p = 0.003) and cranial vault asymmetry ( p < 0.001) were found; the children that used helmet therapy demonstrated greater improvement. Conclusions: This is one of the larger published long-term outcome studies comparing children that used helmets and repositioning to treat their DPB as infants. Fusion of atlas with the occipital bone is a rare congenital anomaly known as occipitocervical synostosis, occipitalization of atlas, assimilation of atlas or atlanto-occipital fusion. We describe two cases of occipitocervical synostosis identified amongst one-hundred dry adult human occipital bones from the collection of Ege University, School of Medicine, Department of Anatomy (incidence 0.5%). The synostosis was complete type for both cases. Occipitocervical synostosis is clinically important as it may cause narrowing of foramen magnum which may compress the brainstem, vertebral artery and cranial nerves, and during surgical approaches to the craniovertebral region. The Iron Age of southernmost Africa began with the introduction of the 'Iron Age Package' and is associated with a migration of Bantu-speaking farmers in the first millennium AD from central and east Africa. The archaeological record shows that the Iron Age was dynamic in terms of trade, economic and population growth, and indicates further migration early in the second millennium from eastern Africa. While research suggests a certain degree of homogeneity among modern Bantu-speaking groups, little consideration has been given to variability within the Iron Age itself. This study uses dental anthropology and 3D cranio-mandibular metrics to assess variability among farmer populations of the Iron Age. We show that there is considerable homogeneity between samples from the Early Iron Age (first millennium), Late Iron Age (second millennium) and more northerly samples from Zambia. This supports the conclusion of recent common ancestry (and common geographic origins), combined with a scenario that includes sustained admixture among groups over time. Additionally, an Early Iron Age sample from eastern Botswana, Toutswe, is equidistant from other Early Iron Age specimens and specimens from the Late Iron Age, while few differences are detected between samples east and west of the escarpment in the Late Iron Age. Purpose: The cranio-cervical junction (CCJ) is an anatomically, functionally and biomechanically complex region. It is commonly involved in trauma of varying severity that can be managed with a multitude of treatment options and carry diverse prognosis. Our objective is to evaluate the quality of currently used CCJ injury classifications in an evidence-based approach. Methods: We performed two consecutive literature reviews. In the first, we tried to find which classifications are currently used in CCJ injuries. In the second, we scrutinized the gathered classifications in terms of validity, reliability, severity grading, treatment guidance and prognosis assessment. Results: Twenty classifications are currently used to describe the CCJ injuries and 72 individual injury patterns have been recognized. Almost a third of them can grade severity, guide treatment and assess prognosis. Only two classifications have been tested for validity and reliability. Conclusions: CCJ injuries are poorly described by the current classifications according to evidence-based criteria. There is an obvious need for a simple and reliable classification tool to guide patient management in the evidence-based medicine era. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The shape and size of the foramen magnum (FM) can be altered in craniosynostoses. However, few studies have investigated these changes. In this paper, we investigate the morphology of the foramen magnum in syndromic and non-syndromic brachycephaly. Methods: Surface area, anteroposterior (AP) diameter, and transverse diameters of the FM were measured on high-resolution CT scans in children with Crouzon (25), Pfeiffer (21), Apert (26), Saethre-Chotzen (7) syndromes, and isolated bicoronal synostosis (9) and compared to an age-matched control group (30). Results: A significantly smaller FM surface area was observed in Crouzon (6.3 ± 1.7 cm) and Pfeiffer (6.4 ± 2.3 cm) syndromes as compared to the control group (7.4 ± 1.3 cm, p = 0.006 and p = .017, respectively). In comparison to the control group, no statistically significant alteration in FM surface area was noted in patients with Apert, Saethre-Chotzen, or isolated bicoronal synostosis ( p = 0.37, p = 0.71, p = 0.40 respectively). The transverse diameter of FM was significantly smaller in Crouzon, Pfeiffer, and Apert syndromes compared to the control group ( p = 0.005, p = 0.002, p = 0.03 respectively). In Saethre-Chotzen and isolated bicoronal synostosis, no difference in transverse diameter was demonstrated. Among all groups, only Crouzon syndrome showed reduced anteroposterior diameter as compared to controls ( p = 0.005). In Pfeiffer and Apert syndromes, there was elongation of the shape of the FM with a relatively narrowed width as demonstrated in a significantly increased AP to transverse diameter ratio ( p = 0.002 and p = 0.019, respectively). Discussion and conclusions: The FM shape and area is significantly altered in fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR)-related brachycephaly syndromes (Crouzon, Pfeiffer, and Apert), whereas in patients with Saethre-Chotzen syndrome (TWIST-1 mutation) and isolated non-syndromic bicoronal synostosis, the shape and mean FM area was not statistically different from that of normals. This study brings to light the important role of FGFRs on FM growth and shape. TWIST-1 mutation (Saethre-Chotzen syndrome) does not appear to have an important effect in shaping the FM. In 1933, geologist and explorer Michael Terry collected the skull of a small macropodid captured by members of his party near Lake Mackay, western Northern Territory. In 1957, this skull was described as the sole exemplar of a distinct subspecies, Bettongia penicillata anhydra, but was later synonymized with B. lesueur and thereafter all but forgotten. We use a combination of craniodental morphology and ancient mitochondrial DNA to confirm that the Lake Mackay specimen is taxonomically distinct from all other species of Bettongia and recognize an additional specimen from a Western Australian Holocene fossil accumulation. B. anhydra is morphologically and genetically most similar to B. lesueur but differs in premolar shape, rostrum length, dentary proportions, and molar size gradient. In addition, it has a substantial mitochondrial cytochrome b pairwise distance of 9.6-12% relative to all other bettongs. The elevation of this recently extinct bettong to species status indicates that Australia's mammal extinction record over the past 2 centuries is even worse than currently accepted. Like other bettongs, B. anhydra probably excavated much of its food and may have performed valuable ecological services that improved soil structure and water infiltration and retention, as well as playing an important role in the dispersal of seeds and mycorrhizal fungal spores. All extant species of Bettongia have experienced extensive range contractions since European colonization and some now persist only on island refugia. As the largest extant cat species in west Asia, the leopard ( Panthera pardus) shows high morphological variation, which has led to the description of seven different subspecies in the region. Different investigations have tried to clarify its phylogenetic structure; however, sample size and spatial distribution insufficiently represent the Iranian population, the largest remaining bulk of the Persian leopard ( P. p. saxicolor) in the Middle East that probably functioned as a source for the subspecies' range. We examined sequence variation in the mitochondrial NADH-5 gene for 25 leopards from different parts of Iran. Also, we examined 49 adult male skulls to understand the morphological variation of the Iranian leopard population. Our craniometrical results revealed that while no differentiation is seen based on size or shape characteristics from different parts of Iran, larger individuals normally belong to the northern range. Time-calibrated Bayesian phylogenetic analysis suggested that the Iranian female lineage is a monophyletic group that diverged from a group of Asian leopards in the second half of the Pleistocene. Three closely related haplotypes were identified for the entire country: one commonly found haplotype throughout Iran, south Caucasus and Turkmenistan and two localized haplotypes were sequenced from southern Zagros and eastern Alborz. Accordingly, the Persian leopard population in Iran as well as in neighbouring countries can be protected as a large management unit through large-scale conservation planning. A rare congenital anomaly in the form of sagittal clefting of the fifth lumbar vertebra was observed in the skeleton of a young adult female excavated from the Greek colonial site of Apollonia Pontica (5th to 3rd centuries BC) on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. No compensatory changes had occurred to the adjacent vertebrae, and no other skeletal anomalies or pathological conditions were observed in the skeleton. [Objectives] To analyze pars orbitalis symmetry of UCLP patients in mixed dentition period, ad provide better theoretical basis for studying craniofacial shape and clinical treatment. [Methods] 3D reconstruction of CBCT images of 20 UCLP patients in mixed dentition period was conducted, and 13 mark points were selected from 3D image for fixed-point measurement to analyze 3D shape of pars orbitalis. [Results] (i) Horizontal symmetry of pars orbitalis. The width of pars orbitalis of UCLP patients at sites So, Lo, Oi, Or, SoF, Z of fracture side was all equa to that at nonfracture side, and there was not statistical difference (P>0.05). (ii) Sagittal symmetry of pars orbitalis. Sagittal development of pars orbitalis of UCLP patients at sites So, Lo, Oi, Or, SoF, Z of fracture side was equal to that at nonfracture side, and there was not statistical difference (P>0.05). (iii) Vertical symmetry of pars orbitalis. The height of pars orbitalis of UCLP patients at sites So, Lo, Oi, SoF, Z of fracture side was higher than that at nonfracture side, and there was not obvious statistical difference (P > 0.05). BACKGROUND Hidradenocarcinoma (HAC) is a rare malignant adnexal neoplasm with reported metastatic potential and undefined optimal treatment. OBJECTIVE To review clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with HAC treated with Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS). MATERIALS AND METHODS The authors performed a retrospective chart review of patients with HAC treated by MMS at Mayo Clinic from 1993 to 2013, recording patient demographics, tumor characteristics, MMS stages to clearance, follow-up, recurrence, metastasis, and mortality. RESULTS Ten patients underwent MMS for HAC more than 20 years. The average age was 62.8 years, with 6 females and 4 males. Occipital scalp was the most common location (40%), followed by extremities (30%) and face (20%). In 5 of 7 cases (71%), “cyst” was the working clinical diagnosis. The average preoperative lesion area was 3.18 cm2, with an average of 1.5 MMS stages required for clearance. Mean postoperative follow-up was 7 years (range, 5– 205 months). No tumors treated with MMS recurred, metastasized, or led to disease-related mortality. CONCLUSION Mohs micrographic surgery seems to be a useful treatment modality for HAC. The ankylosaurine Pinacosaurus is one of the best known ankylosaur to date in terms of the number and preservational quality of specimens. Juvenile to sub-adult postcrania collected by the Soviet-Mongolian Paleontological Expedition from the Upper Cretaceous Alagteeg Formation at Alag Teeg, Mongolia can be assigned to Pinacosaurus grangeri based on discrete cranial characters. One individual is significantly larger than the others and demonstrates delayed fusion of postcranial elements with the earliest occurring between dorsal ribs and vertebrae. The robustness of forelimb elements is positively allometric with respect to their length, indicating weight-bearing relationship. Such length-dependent correlations are not seen in the hind limbs. Finally, incipient cervical half rings suggest a developmental pathway of outgrowths from the underlying band combined with fusion of overlying osteoderms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
