169. Ugly democracy: towards epistemic disobedience in development education
- Author
-
da Costa, Marta and da Costa, Marta
- Abstract
In the current context of global threats to democratic life, through a rise in fascism, populism and right-wing governments, the thirty-sixth issue of Policy and Practice: A Development Education Review calls and opens a space for reflecting on ‘development education’s distinctive and rounded view of democracy’. This article answers the call by engaging with this current problem-space and the answers development education in Europe have historically mobilised in response to it (Scott, 2004). Rather than starting from the position that the current forms of violence we are witnessing are not democratic or ‘real’ representations of freedom, the article addresses democracy – a modern construct – in its entirety, examining the entanglements between democracy, development education, and modern/colonial systems of oppression. Drawing on political perspectives from contexts where democracy is assumed and contexts where it was imposed, the article aims to dislodge the self-evident position of democracy as the universally desirable answer for development education, and consider the possibilities opened by starting from a position where democracy is part of the problem as well. Building on, and contributing to, decolonial scholarship in the field, the article draws on Elizabeth R. Anker’s (2022) study of ugly freedoms as a framework from which to complexify discussions about democracy and consider possibilities for thinking about development education differently – through more compromised, understated engagements with global issues that resist investments in purity, ‘doing’ and certainties, opening different possibilities for thinking and experiencing freedom. The article ends by suggesting a set of reflexive questions that might support interrogations of democracy in development education practice.

- Abstract
Introduction: The nursing work in COVID-19 hospital units is complex, challenging, and full of elements whose understanding is important for the field of Management and Health at Work. Objective: To understand the daily life and challenges of nursing workers in the front line of confronting the pandemic in COVID-19 hospital units. Materials and Methods: Qualitative study developed with 35 nursing workers in COVID-19 units from seven hospitals in southern Brazil, through semi-structured interviews. The NVivo software helped in the data treatment from the thematic content analysis. Results: Two analytical categories emerged from data analysis: Challenges of nursing daily life in COVID-19 units: complexity and demands of assistance; and Challenges of being a frontline nursing worker: unfolding in professional well-being and personal life. Discussion: It can be considered that the complexity and intensification of frontline work caused impacts that can lead nursing workers to illness. Actions to promote professional visibility in society are important, to demystify the romanticized image about the profession, and to problematize the importance of nursing in facing the pandemic and the impacts suffered by these workers. Conclusion: Nursing workers in COVID-19 units experience complex challenges, with repercussions on their work experience and their lives. - Abstract
Objective: The objective of this study is to analyze conservative treatments implemented to manage positional plagiocephaly in infants. Methods: This is a systematic review conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, performed in the Medline (PubMed), Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases. Articles were selected according to the eligibility criteria, regarding the effectiveness of conservative treatments in positional plagiocephaly in infants, published in the last 10 years with a score ≥3 in the PEDro Scale. Results: A total of 318 articles were identified and 9 of them were finally selected. Conclusions: Physical therapy treatment is considered as the first line of intervention in plagiocephaly with nonsynostotic asymmetries and manual therapy is the method that obtains the best results within this intervention. In cases of moderate or severe plagiocephaly, helmet therapy can be an effective secondline intervention; however, the best way to prevent this condition is through counseling of parents or caregivers, and early treatment is essential for optimal therapeutic outcomes. The review was registered in PROSPERO (CDR42022306466).

- Abstract
The dataset presented in this article was used in a pilot ran- domized and controlled trial that evaluated the effective- ness of manual physical therapy (MPT) compared to con- ventional pharmacologic treatment (CPT) for treating chronic pediatric functional constipation (CPC). The pilot trial was carried out at the Central University Hospital of Asturias in Oviedo, Spain, with 47 children between 2 and 12 years old being evaluated by a Pediatric Gastroenterologist. Partic- ipants received 9 sessions of MPT which were spaced out weekly for the first two months and bi-weekly for the third month. The Pediatric Quality of Life questionnaire (PedsQL TM ) scores were assessed at the start of the trial (Time 1), its end (Time 2), and 5 years later (Time 3). The dataset contains the collected raw data, including participant demo- graphics data and PedsQL TM scores categorized by question group, as well as total scores for each participant at each time point. This dataset can be used to further analyze the results and the study can be potentially replicated.

- Abstract
Sexual health is crucial for overall well-being, and dyspare- unia (genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorder) is a common sexual disorder that can be addressed through multimodal physiotherapy approaches, including education. However, it’s unclear whether socioeconomic factors influence the effec- tiveness of educational therapies for dyspareunia. The dataset presented in this article was used in a pilot randomized con- trolled trial that aimed to investigate any potential corre- lation between socioeconomic status and the outcomes of a therapeutic educational program for dyspareunia, evaluat- ing the impact of a therapeutic educational program on 69 women. The data measured pain intensity, pain-related out- comes, and sexual functioning over time. In February 2022, socioeconomic status measurements (age, educational level, household monthly income, and job rank) were collected. The analysis used Pearson’s correlation index and Spearman’s rho statistic to assess any correlations between these vari- ables. The results of the correlation analysis indicated that there was no significant correlation between any of the outcomes of the intervention and the socioeconomic status measure- ments. The data analysis findings suggest that a therapeutic educa- tional program can effectively improve pain intensity, pain- related outcomes, and sexual functioning in patients with persistent pelvic pain, regardless of their socioeconomic sta- tus. These findings have policy implications, as they suggest that education is a powerful tool that can improve sexuality outcomes for patients with dyspareunia, regardless of their socioeconomic background. The dataset contains the collected raw data, including par- tial participant demographics data and scores categorized by question group, as well as scores for each participant at each time point (before and after the intervention). This dataset can be used to further analyze the results and the study can be potentially replicated.

The present report addresses the issue of the internationalization of one of the most important publishing groups in Portugal, LeYa. This report is based on a six-month internship, held in the communication and marketing department of the LeYa group. LeYa was born in 2008 and includes some of the most prestigious Portuguese language publishers. It is considered the biggest Portuguese publishing group, holding a position of leadership in the national market, as well as in the Angolan and Mozambican markets. It also operates in the Brazilian market, in the e-learning sector. In this report, it is analysed the internationalization process of LeYa to Brazil, focusing on the motivations, difficulties, and results. Regarding the theory, some relevant topics to the internationalization matter were addressed, such as entry modes, barriers, motivations, internationalization theories, and e commerce. The intention was to connect the theoretical knowledge acquired throughout the master’s degree with this case study. Additionally, it was also analysed internationalization opportunities for Portuguese publishers through the adoption of digital projects, having in consideration the projects that LeYa is currently undertaking. Through these opportunities, it is possible to recognise the importance of the digitalization of the publishers’ businesses, since they allow for an easier access to international markets, as well as lower costs and risks.

The early detection of relapse following primary surgery for non-small-cell lung cancer and the characterization of emerging subclones, which seed metastatic sites, might offer new therapeutic approaches for limiting tumour recurrence. The ability to track the evolutionary dynamics of early-stage lung cancer non-invasively in circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) has not yet been demonstrated. Here we use a tumour-specific phylogenetic approach to profile the ctDNA of the first 100 TRACERx (Tracking Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer Evolution Through Therapy (Rx)) study participants, including one patient who was also recruited to the PEACE (Posthumous Evaluation of Advanced Cancer Environment) post-mortem study. We identify independent predictors of ctDNA release and analyse the tumour-volume detection limit. Through blinded profiling of postoperative plasma, we observe evidence of adjuvant chemotherapy resistance and identify patients who are very likely to experience recurrence of their lung cancer. Finally, we show that phylogenetic ctDNA profiling tracks the subclonal nature of lung cancer relapse and metastasis, providing a new approach for ctDNA-driven therapeutic studies., Author(s): Christopher Abbosh [1]; Nicolai J. Freedom Is Power: Liberty through Political Representation (Nonfiction work) -- Hamilton, Lawrence -- Book reviews ,Humanities ,Political science ,Social sciences - Abstract
What does it mean to be free? How is freedom related to power? How does the concept of freedom shape our conceptions of democracy? Lawrence Hamilton's book entitled Freedom Is Power: Liberty through Political Representation offers an alternative conceptualization of freedom to the republican and liberal traditions. Hamilton delineates his framework of analysis starting from a realpolitik approach, with Machiavellian and Foucaultian inspiration: first, by conceiving politics via the lens of conflict instead of consensus; second, by conceiving freedom in terms of power (relations). In this paper we offer an overview of Hamilton's argument, exploring the steps that lead us to a reconceptualise freedom in terms of power, needs and interests and to rethink the significance, meanings and practices of political representation in a democratic context. transcriptomics ,neurobiology ,atlas ,ontology ,drosophila ,connectomics ,FAIR - Abstract
Peer reviewed: True, As a model organism, Drosophila is uniquely placed to contribute to our understanding of how brains control complex behavior. Not only does it have complex adaptive behaviors, but also a uniquely powerful genetic toolkit, increasingly complete dense connectomic maps of the central nervous system and a rapidly growing set of transcriptomic profiles of cell types. But this also poses a challenge: Given the massive amounts of available data, how are researchers to Find, Access, Integrate and Reuse (FAIR) relevant data in order to develop an integrated anatomical and molecular picture of circuits, inform hypothesis generation, and find reagents for experiments to test these hypotheses? The Virtual Fly Brain (virtualflybrain.org) web application & API provide a solution to this problem, using FAIR principles to integrate 3D images of neurons and brain regions, connectomics, transcriptomics and reagent expression data covering the whole CNS in both larva and adult. Users can search for neurons, neuroanatomy and reagents by name, location, or connectivity, via text search, clicking on 3D images, search-by-image, and queries by type (e.g., dopaminergic neuron) or properties (e.g., synaptic input in the antennal lobe). Returned results include cross-registered 3D images that can be explored in linked 2D and 3D browsers or downloaded under open licenses, and extensive descriptions of cell types and regions curated from the literature. These solutions are potentially extensible to cover similar atlasing and data integration challenges in vertebrates.
