ABSTRACT: Background: Patients with syndromic heritable thoracic aortic diseases (sHTAD) who underwent prophylactic aortic root replacement are at high risk of distal aortic events, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This prospective, longitudinal study evaluates the impact of valve-sparing aortic root replacement (VSARR) on aortic fluid dynamics and biomechanics in these patients. Methods: Sixteen patients with Marfan or Loeys-Dietz syndrome underwent two time-resolved three-dimensional phase-contrast cardiovascular magnetic resonance (4D flow CMR) studies before (sHTAD-preSx) and after VSARR (sHTAD-postSx). Two matched cohorts of 40 healthy volunteers (HV) and 16 sHTAD patients without indication for aortic root replacement (sHTAD-NSx) with available 4D flow CMR were included for comparison. The ability to cultivate the cyanobacterium Arhtrospira platensis in artificially lightened photobioreactors using high energetic efficiency (quasi-monochromatic) red LED was investigated. In order to reach the same maximal productivities as with the polychromatic lightening control conditions (red + blue, P/2e- = 1.275), the need to work with an optimal range of wavelength around 620 nm was first established on batch and continuous cultures. The long-term physiological and kinetic behavior was then verified in a continuous photobioreactor illuminated only with red (620 nm) LED, showing that the maximum productivities can be maintained over 30 residence times with only minor changes in the pigment content of the cells corresponding to a well-known adaptation mechanism of the photosystems, but without any effect on growth and stoichiometry. For both poly and monochromatic incident light inputs, a predictive spectral knowledge model was proposed and validated for the first time, allowing the calculation of the kinetics and stoichiometry observed in any photobioreactor cultivating A. platensis, or other cyanobacteria if the parameters were updated. It is shown that the photon flux (with a specified wavelength) must be used instead of light energy flux as a relevant control variable for the growth. The experimental and theoretical results obtained in this study demonstrate that it is possible to save the energy consumed by the lightening device of photobioreactors using red LED, the spectral range of which is defined according to the action spectrum of photosynthesis. This appears to be crucial information for applications in which the energy must be rationalized, as it is the case for life support systems in closed environments like a permanent spatial base or a submarine.

This paper establishes and discusses the consistency and the range of applicability of a simple, but general and predictive analytical formula, enabling to easily assess the maximum volumetric biomass growth rates (the productivities) in several kinds of photobioreactors with more or less 15 percents of deviation. Experimental validations are performed on photobioreactors of very different conceptions and designs, cultivating the cyanobacterium Arthrospira platensis, on a wide range of volumes and hemispherical incident light fluxes. The practical usefulness of the proposed formula is demonstrated by the fact that it appears completely independent of the characteristics of the material phase (as the type of reactor, the kind of mixing, the biomass concentration), according to the first principle of thermodynamics and to the Gauss-Ostrogradsky theorem. Its ability to give the maximum (only) kinetic performance of photobioreactors cultivating many different photoautotrophic strains (cyanobacteria, green algae, eukaryotic microalgae) is theoretically discussed but experimental results are reported to a future work of the authors or to any other contribution arising from the scientific community working in the field of photobioreactor engineering and potentially interested by this approach.

In this article, a complete radiative transfer approach for estimating incident photon flux density by actinometry is presented that opens the door to investigation of large-scale intensified photoreactors. The approach is based on an original concept: the analysis of the probability that a photon entering the reaction volume is absorbed by the actinometer. Whereas this probability is assumed to be equal to one in classical actinometry, this assumption can no longer be satisfied in many practical situations in which optical thicknesses are low. Here we remove this restriction by using most recent advances in the field of radiative transfer Monte Carlo, in order to rigorously evaluate the instantaneous absorption-probability as a function of conversion. Implementation is performed in EDStar, an open-source development environment that enables straightforward simulation of reactors with any geometry (directly provided by their CAD-file), with the very same Monte Carlo algorithm. Experimental investigations are focused on Reinecke salt photodissociation in two reactors designed for the study of natural and artificial photosynthesis. The first reactor investigated serves as reference configuration: its simple torus geometry allows to compare flux densities measured with quantum sensors and actinometry. Validations and analysis are carried out on this reactor. Then, the approach is implemented on a 25 L photobioreactor with complex geometry corresponding to one thousand light-diffusing optical fibers distributing incident photons within the reaction volume. Results show that classical actinometry neglecting radiative transfer can lead to 50 percent error when measuring incident flux density for such reactors. Finally, we show how this radiative transfer approach paves the way for analyzing high conversion as a mean to investigate angular distribution of incident photons.

The iron thiolate complex is a simplified model of the active site of diiron hydrogenase enzymes. Here, we describe the implementation of this noble metal free catalyst in aqueous solutions using eosin Y as photosensitizer and triethylamine as an electron donor in an experimental bench specially designed for the study of H2 photoproduction. The bench is composed of an adjustable visible light source, a fully equipped flat torus photoreactor and analytical devices. Rates of H2 production under varied experimental conditions were obtained from an accurate measurement of pressure increase. A spectral radiative analysis involving blue photons of the source primarily absorbed has been carried out. Results have proven the rate of H2 production is proportional to the mean volumetric rate of radiant light absorbed demonstrating a linear thermokinetic coupling. The bio-inspired catalyst has proven non-limiting and reveals interesting capabilities for future large scale H2 production.

This article is dedicated to the presentation of a novel experimental bench designed to study the photoproduction of H2. It is composed of three main parts: a light source, a fully equipped flat torus reactor and the related analytical system. The reactor hydrodynamic behaviour has been carefully examined and it can be considered as perfectly mixed. The photon flux density is accurately known thanks to reconciled quantum sensor and actinometry experiments. The incident photon direction is perpendicular to the reactor windows; in such a configuration the radiative transfer description may be properly approximated as a one dimensional problem in Cartesian geometry. Based on accurate pressure measurement in the gas tight photoreactor, the production rates of H2 (using CdS particles in association with sulphide and sulfite ions as hole scavengers) are easily and trustingly obtained. First estimations of apparent quantum yield have proven to be dependent on mean volumetric rate of radiant light energy absorbed hence demonstrating the need for the use of a radiative transfer approach to understand the observed phenomena and for the proper formulation of the thermo-kinetic coupling.

162. Calculation of Optimal Design and Ideal Productivities of Volumetrically-Lightened Photobioreactors using the Constructal Approach

This article examines the optimal design and ideal kinetic performances of volumetrically-lightened photobioreactors (PBR). From knowledge models developed for several years by the author, simple theoretical rules are established at first to define the optimal functioning of solar and artificially-lightened PBR. The constructal approach is then used accordingly, what allows the emergence of the optimal design, or the best lighting structures assembly, in Cartesian and curvilinear geometries, with a privileged treatment for the practical case of the 2D-cylindrical geometry. The obtained results confirm the considerable potential of this approach which is applied here for the first time to the case of the radiant light transfer in participating and reactive media. This enables to define clearly, from a theoretical point of view, the concept of ideal PBR (both for solar or artificial illuminations), which is demonstrated to correspond exactly in most cases to volumetrically-lightened PBR, mainly for the solar DiCoFluV (Dilution Contr\^ol\'ee du Flux en Volume) concept developed in this article. For this last case, the results of the calculations allow to announce maximal biomass productivities as thermodynamic limits, what can contribute to clarify a today confused debate on this point. The work proposed in this article finally establishes guidelines to conceive more efficient largescale PBR of any desired geometry and criteria like volume (for artificial illumination) or surface (for solar illumination) maximum productivities and internal or external irradiation.

A covariant formalism is used in order to examine the status of Maxwell equations and to unify the concept of balances, for all chemical engineering applications in relation with electrodynamics. The resulting formal structure serves as a discussion in studying the determinism of electromagnetic systems, and examining the theoretical foundations for a general classification of chemical engineering applications when non-conservative forces are concerned. A strategy for modeling such applications is then sketched and the balances for the main conserved and non-conserved extensive quantities are then summarized in their covariant and classical forms.

164. Electron and muon $g-2$ anomalies in general flavour conserving two Higgs doublets models

In general two Higgs doublet models (2HDMs) without scalar flavour changing neutral couplings (SFCNC) in the lepton sector, the electron, muon and tau interactions can be decoupled in a robust framework, stable under renormalization group evolution. In this framework, the breaking of lepton flavour universality (LFU) goes beyond the mass proportionality, opening the possibility to accommodate a different behaviour among charged leptons. We analyze the electron and muon $(g-2)$ anomalies in the context of these general flavour conserving models in the leptonic sector (g$\ell$FC). We consider two different models, I-g$\ell$FC and II-g$\ell$FC, in which the quark Yukawa couplings coincide, respectively, with the ones in type I and in type II 2HDMs. We find two types of solutions that fully reproduce both $(g-2)$ anomalies, and which are compatible with experimental constraints from LEP and LHC, from LFU, from flavour and electroweak physics, and with theoretical constraints in the scalar sector. In the first type of solution, all the new scalars have masses in the 1--2.5 TeV range, the vacuum expectation values (vevs) of both doublets are quite similar in magnitude, and both anomalies are dominated by two loop Barr-Zee contributions. This solution appears in both models. In a second type of solution, one loop contributions are dominant in the muon anomaly, all new scalars have masses below 1 TeV, and the ratio of vevs is in the range 10--100. The second neutral scalar $H$ is the lighter among the new scalars, with a mass in the 210--390 GeV range while the pseudoscalar $A$ is the heavier, with a mass in the range 400--900 GeV. The new charged scalar $H^\pm$ is almost degenerate either with the scalar or with the pseudoscalar. This second type of solution only appears in the I-g$\ell$FC model. Both solutions require the soft breaking of the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ symmetry of the Higgs potential., Comment: 32 pages, 11 figures

165. Domain formation in bicomponent vesicles induced by composition-curvature coupling

Lipid vesicles composed of a mixture of two types of lipids are studied by intensive Monte-Carlo numerical simulations. The coupling between the local composition and the membrane shape is induced by two different spontaneous curvatures of the components. We explore the various morphologies of these biphasic vesicles coupled to the observed patterns such as nano-domains or labyrinthine mesophases. The effect of the difference in curvatures, the surface tension and the interaction parameter between components are thoroughly explored. Our numerical results quantitatively agree with previous analytical results obtained by [Gueguen et al., Eur. Phys. J. E, 2014, vol. 37, p. 76] in the disordered (high temperature) phase. Numerical simulations allow us to explore the full parameter space, especially close to and below the critical temperature, where analytical results are not accessible. Phase diagrams are constructed and domain morphologies are quantitatively studied by computing the structure factor and the domain size distribution. Here, the structural, electronic and optical properties of the GaP1-xSbx/Si tandem materials association are determined in view of its use for solar water splitting applications. The GaPSb crystalline layer is grown on Si by Molecular Beam Epitaxy with different Sb contents. The bandgap value and bandgap type of GaPSb alloy are determined on the whole Sb range, by combining experimental absorption measurements with tight binding (TB) theoretical calculations. The indirect (X-band) to direct ({\Gamma}-band) cross-over is found to occur at 30% Sb content. Especially, at a Sb content of 32%, the GaP1-xSbx alloy reaches the desired 1.7eV direct bandgap, enabling efficient sunlight absorption, that can be ideally combined with the Si 1.1 eV bandgap. Moreover, the band alignment of GaP1-xSbx alloys and Si with respect to water redox potential levels has been analyzed, which shows the GaPSb/Si association is an interesting combination both for the hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reactions. These results open new routes for the development of III-V/Si low-cost high-efficiency photoelectrochemical cells.

Here, we clarify the central role of the miscut during group III-V/ group IV crystal growth. We show that the miscut first impacts the initial antiphase domain distribution, with two distinct nucleation-driven and terraces-driven regimes. It is then inferred how the antiphase domain distribution mean phase and mean lateral length are affected by the miscut. An experimental confirmation is given through the comparison of antiphase domain distributions in GaP and GaSb/AlSb samples grown on nominal and vicinal Si substrates. The antiphase domain burying step of GaP/Si samples is then observed at the atomic scale by scanning tunneling microscopy. The steps arising from the miscut allow growth rate imbalance between the two phases of the crystal and the growth conditions can deeply modify the imbalance coefficient, as illustrated with GaAs/Si. We finally explain how a monodomain III-V semiconductor configuration can be achieved even on low miscut substrates.

ObjectiveAlthough most seizures in neonates are due to acute brain injury, some represent the first sign of neonatal onset genetic epilepsies. Delay in recognition and lack of expert assessment of neonates with epilepsy may result in worse developmental outcomes. As in older children and adults, seizure semiology in neonates is an essential determinant in diagnosis. We aimed to establish whether seizure type at presentation in neonates can suggest a genetic etiology.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed the clinical and electroencephalographic (EEG) characteristics of seizures in neonates admitted in two Level IV neonatal intensive care units, diagnosed with genetic epilepsy, for whom a video-EEG recording at presentation was available for review, and compared them on a 1:2 ratio with neonates with seizures due to stroke or hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.ResultsTwenty neonates with genetic epilepsy were identified and compared to 40 neonates with acute provoked seizures. Genetic epilepsies were associated with pathogenic variants in KCNQ2 (n = 12), KCNQ3 (n = 2), SCN2A (n = 2), KCNT1 (n = 1), PRRT2 (n = 1), and BRAT1 (n = 2). All neonates with genetic epilepsy had seizures with clinical correlates that were either tonic (18/20) or myoclonic (2/20). In contrast, 17 of 40 (42%) neonates with acute provoked seizures had electrographic only seizures, and the majority of the remainder had clonic seizures. In this white paper, we present a cross-section of important scientific questions that remain partially or completely unanswered, ranging from Titan exosphere to the deep interior, and we detail which instrumentation and mission scenarios should be used to answer them. Our intention is to formulate the science goals for the next generation of planetary missions to Titan in order to prepare the future exploration of the moon. The Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) experiment has observed two air shower events with energy $\sim 500~{\rm PeV}$ emerging from the Earth with exit angles $\sim 30^\circ$ above the horizon. As was immediately noted by the ANITA Collaboration, these events (in principle) could originate in the atmospheric decay of an upgoing $\tau$-lepton produced through a charged current interaction of a $\nu_\tau$ inside the Earth. However, the relatively steep arrival angles of these perplexing events create tension with the standard model (SM) neutrino-nucleon interaction cross section. Deepening the conundrum, the IceCube neutrino telescope and the Pierre Auger Observatory with substantially larger exposures to cosmic $\nu_\tau$'s in this energy range have not observed any events. This lack of observation implies that the messenger particle (MP) giving rise to ANITA events must produce an air shower event rate at least a factor of 40 larger than that produced by a flux of $\tau$-neutrinos to avoid conflicts with the upper limits reported by the IceCube and the Pierre Auger collaborations. In addition, the sensitivity of ANITA to MP-induced events must be comparable to or larger than those of IceCube and Auger to avoid conflict with the non-observation of any signal at these facilities. Beyond SM interpretations of ANITA events can be classified according to whether the MPs: (i) live inside the Earth, (ii) originate in neutrino-nucleon collisions inside the Earth, (iii) come from cosmological distances.
