Abstract

[EN] Multivariate analysis (PCA, DFA) and morphological data have been used to study 72 Moroccan population samples of Camponotus (superspecies) cruentatus Latr. and 7 samples of various origins including the original types of «varieties» cruentior Santschi, 1931 and lindbergi Santschi, 1931. A new taxonomy of the ant-group Camponotus cruentatus is propounded, as including a single superspecies Camponotus cruentatus Latr. with three vicariant species: Camponotus cruentatus (Latreille, 1802) distributed from the High Atlas to North of Italy, Camponotus obscuriventris sp. n., located in the High Atlas of Marrakech, with a marginal population in the Tizi-n-Test and Camponotus pexus Santschi, 1929 from the extrem western High Atlas and Souss; its validity as a good species is corroborated. The morphs cruentior Sants. and lindbergi Sants. of C. cruentatus (Latr.) are regional morphotypes (from Rif and Middle Atlas of Azrou, respectively) besides other regional morphotypes. The population from southeastern France was found corresponding to Latreille's cruentatus typical form. The obviousness of colours changes and alterations of body part proportions in relation to local ecological conditions are shown; populations from cold and damp localities (in elevated or in forest stations) present generally a darkening of the coloration patterns and a shortening of the scapes and tibiae. A hypothesis of a Moroccan origin for the superspecies C. cruentatus Latr. is presented., [FR] L'étude de 72 échantillons de populations marocaines de Camponotus (superspecies) cruentatus Latr. et de 7 autres échantillons de diverses provenances dont les types originaux des «variétés» cruentior Santschi, 1931 et lindbergi Santschi, 1931 a été réalisée à l'aide de méthodes d'analyses multivariées (ACP, AFD) et d'après l'observation des caractères morphologiques des trois castes. On propose de rassembler dans une superespèce, Camponotus (supersp.) cruentatus Latr., les trois espèces vicariantes: Camponotus cruentatus (Latreille, 1802) répartie du Haut Atlas au nord de l'Italie, Camponotus obscuriventris sp. n. du Haut Atlas de Marrakech, avec une population marginale au Tizi-n-Test et Camponotus pexus Santschi, 1929 du Haut Atlas extréme occidental et Souss, dont la validité est confirmée. Les formes cruentior Sants. et lindbergi Sants. représentent des morphotypes régionaux de C. cruentatus (Latr.) (respectivement du Rif et du Moyen Atlas d'Azrou) à coté d'autres morphotypes localisés à d'autres régions. Les populations du Midi méditerranéen français correspondent à la «forme typique» cruentatus de Latreille. Outre la variation taxonomique, des variations de coloration et des modifications des proportions corporelles sont mises en évidence en relation avec les conditions écologiques locales: les populations des localités froides et humides (en altitude ou en zone forestière) présentent une mélanisation des colorations -et un racourcissement relatif des scapes et tibias. L'hypothèse d'une origine marocaine de la superspecies C. cruentatus Latr. est présentée.

Abstract

[EN] This paper re-describes and designates a neotype for Aphaenogaster striativentris Forel, 1895 a species found only in the South of the Iberian Peninsula. This species is characterized by its polymorphism and by the worker's cephalic morphology which resembles that of the genus Messor Forel, 1890. A biometric analysis, along with the study of the male genital apparatus, allows it to be included within the genus Aphaenogaster Mayr, 1853. Furthermore, this study suggests that the more developed head in the worker may have resulted from seeds in its diet., [ES] En el presente trabajo se redescribe y se designa un neotipo para Aphaenogaster striativentris Forel, 1895, especie conocida tan sólo del Sur de la Península Ibérica. Esta especie se caracteriza fundamentalmente por ser muy polimorfa, apareciendo obreras con una morfología cefálica que las asemeja al género Messor Forel, 1890. Se hace un análisis biométrico que permite, junto con el estudio de la morfología del aparato genital masculino, incluirla sin ninguna duda dentro del género Aphaenogaster Mayr, 1853. Además se indica, como razón para la existencia de esas obreras con la cabeza muy desarrollada, la utilización de semillas como parte de su dieta alimenticia.
