Abstract

Let $(X,\omega)$ be a compact symplectic manifold whose first Chern class $c_1(X)$ is divisible by a positive integer $n$. We construct a $\mathbb{Z}_{2n}$-action on its Fukaya category $Fuk(X)$ and a $\mathbb{Z}_n$-action on the local models of its moduli of Lagrangian branes. We show that this action is compatible with the gluing functions for different local models., Comment: The construction of the action on Fukaya category is significantly simplified. Abstract

Despite mounting evidence that materials imperfections are a major obstacle to practical applications of superconducting qubits, connections between microscopic material properties and qubit coherence are poorly understood. Here, we perform measurements of transmon qubit relaxation times $T_1$ in parallel with spectroscopy and microscopy of the thin polycrystalline niobium films used in qubit fabrication. By comparing results for films deposited using three techniques, we reveal correlations between $T_1$ and grain size, enhanced oxygen diffusion along grain boundaries, and the concentration of suboxides near the surface. Physical mechanisms connect these microscopic properties to residual surface resistance and $T_1$ through losses arising from the grain boundaries and from defects in the suboxides. Further, experiments show that the residual resistance ratio can be used as a figure of merit for qubit lifetime. This comprehensive approach to understanding qubit decoherence charts a pathway for materials-driven improvements of superconducting qubit performance.

Abstract

Fluoride-ion batteries are an attractive energy storage concept analogous to lithium-ion batteries but feature an inverted paradigm where anions are the principal charge carriers. Insertion hosts that can reversibly insert fluoride ions at room temperature are exceedingly sparse. Here, we report that topochemical insertion of fluoride ions in FeSb2O4 involves Fe2+/Fe3+ redox but is mediated by multi-center synergies between iron and antimony centers. Separation of the redox center from the p-block coordination site alleviates structural strain by enabling compensatory contraction and expansion of FeO6 and SbO3 polyhedra, respectively. p-block electron lone pairs play a critical role in weakening anion-lattice interactions, enabling reversible fluoride-ion diffusion across microns. The results illuminate the key principle that interactions traceable to stereoactive lone pairs can be used to mediate anion-lattice interactions and suggest that anion insertion hosts can be designed by pairing redox-active transition metals with p-block cations bearing stereochemically active electron lone pairs.

168. Biosecurity measures for backyard poultry in developing countries: a systematic review

Abstract

Abstract Background Poultry represents an important sector in animal production, with backyard flocks representing a huge majority, especially in the developing countries. In these countries, villagers raise poultry to meet household food demands and as additional sources of incomes. Backyard production methods imply low biosecurity measures and high risk of infectious diseases, such as Newcastle disease or zoonosis such as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). We reviewed literature on biosecurity practices for prevention of infectious diseases, and published recommendations for backyard poultry and assessed evidence of their impact and feasibility, particularly in developing countries. Documents were sourced from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) website, and from Pubmed and Google databases. Results A total of 62 peer-reviewed and non-referred documents were found, most of which were published recently (after 2004) and focused on HPAI/H5N1-related biosecurity measures (64%). Recommendations addressed measures for flock management, feed and water management, poultry trade and stock change, poultry health management and the risk to humans. Only one general guideline was found for backyard poultry-related biosecurity; the other documents were drawn up for specific developing settings and only engaged their authors (e.g. consultants). These national guidelines written by consultants generated recommendations regarding measures derived from the highest standards of commercial poultry production. Although biosecurity principles of isolation and containment are described in most documents, only a few documents were found on the impact of measures in family poultry settings and none gave any evidence of their feasibility and effectiveness for backyard poultry. Conclusions Given the persistent threat posed by HPAI/H5N1 to humans in developing countries, our findings highlight the importance of encouraging applied research toward identifying sustained and adapted biosecurity measures for smallholder poultry flocks in low-income countries.

Abstract

In the framework of optical high data rate satellite-to-ground links, we investigate the performance of a coherent receiver which combines an adaptive optics system and a digital carrier synchronization technique. We propose a digital carrier synchronization system based on a phase-locked loop and use end-to-end simulations to characterize the impact of the atmospheric turbulence in the case of a representative low Earth orbit satellite-to-ground transmission link. The results show that classical digital phase-locked loop techniques can be a reliable solution to accurately compensate for the Doppler frequency shift between the incoming signal and the local oscillator at the ground station, in the presence of a preliminary coarse frequency estimation. Adaptive optics compensation enables the loop to lock after a few milliseconds and to accurately track the phase fluctuations. The bit-error-rate performance is not degraded by the digital loop but suffers from the residual signal amplitude fluctuations., Comment: 10 pages 15 figures. The DK conjecture of Bondal-Orlov and Kawamata states that there should be an embedding of bounded derived categories for any $K$-inequivalence, which is proved to be true for the toroidal case. Abstract

Through a combination of thin film growth, hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES), scanning transmission electron microscopy/electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM/EELS), magneto-transport measurements, and transport modeling, we report on the demonstration of modulation-doping of BaSnO3 (BSO) using a wider bandgap La-doped SrSnO3 (LSSO) layer. Hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) revealed a valence band offset of 0.71 +/- 0.02 eV between LSSO and BSO resulting in a favorable conduction band offset for remote doping of BSO using LSSO. Nonlinear Hall effect of LSSO/BSO heterostructure confirmed two-channel conduction owing to electron transfer from LSSO to BSO and remained in good agreement with the results of self-consistent solution to one-dimensional Poisson and Schr\"odinger equations. Angle-dependent HAXPES measurements revealed a spatial distribution of electrons over 2-3 unit cells in BSO. These results bring perovskite oxides a step closer to room-temperature oxide electronics by establishing modulation-doping approaches in non-SrTiO3-based oxide heterostructure.

An energy storage paradigm orthogonal to Li-ion battery chemistries can be conceptualized by employing anions as the primary charge carriers. F-ion conversion chemistries show promise but have limited cyclability as a result of the significant change in volume of active electrodes upon metal-metal fluoride interconversion. In contrast, the exploration of insertion chemistries has been stymied by the lack of hosts amenable to reversible F-ion insertion at room temperature. Here we show the reversible and homogeneous topochemical insertion/deinsertion and bulk diffusion of F ions within the one-dimensional tunnels of submicrometer-sized FeSb2O4 particles at room temperature. 192. Preparation to Teach in Technology-Rich K-12 Classroom Environments

Abstract

In today's schools, the ability to integrate technology into the teaching and learning environment is a necessary and crucial skill. Many K-12 classroom environments are technology-rich, with 1:1 devices, blended learning, and even distance instruction taking place. However, new teachers often enter the classroom unprepared to successfully utilize educational technology and navigate the technology-rich classroom environment. This research study examined the preparation of preservice teachers to teach with technology in today's classrooms, and explored the gap between the preparation teachers received in their teacher education program and what they needed to be able to be successful as classroom teachers. The primary goal was to explain how teachers are currently being prepared to teach with educational technology and compare that preparation to the skills they found they needed when they began teaching. This study was an exploratory qualitative study that employed survey and interview research approaches to establish a baseline of how technology skills are being addressed in educator preparation programs and how new teachers are utilizing technology in their classrooms. The survey questions consisted of structured and open-ended questions, and the interviews were semi-structured interviews. Results of this research study provide information for future research in the area of teacher education related to technology, can help teacher education programs improve how they prepare preservice teachers, and can help schools better meet the needs of their new teachers. Abstract

The efficient conversion of solar energy to chemical energy represents a critical bottleneck to the energy transition. Photocatalytic splitting of water to generate solar fuels is a promising solution. Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are prime candidates for light-harvesting components of photocatalytic heterostructures, given their size-dependent photophysical properties and band-edge energies. A promising series of heterostructured photocatalysts interface QDs with transition-metal oxides which embed midgap electronic states derived from the stereochemically active electron lone pairs of p-block cations. Here, we examine the thermodynamic driving forces and dynamics of charge separation in Sb2VO5/CdSe QD heterostructures, wherein a high density of Sb 5s2-derived midgap states are prospective acceptors for photogenerated holes. Hard-x-ray valence band photoemission spectroscopy measurements of Sb2VO5/CdSe QD heterostructures were used to deduce thermodynamic driving forces for charge separation. Interfacial charge transfer dynamics in the heterostructures were examined as a function of the mode of interfacial connectivity, contrasting heterostructures with direct interfaces assembled by successive ion layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) and interfaces comprising molecular bridges assembled by linker-assisted assembly (LAA). Transient absorption spectroscopy measurements indicate ultrafast (<2 ps) electron and hole transfer in SILAR-derived heterostructures, whereas LAA-derived heterostructures show orders of magnitude differentials in the kinetics of hole (<100 ps) and electron (∼1 ns) transfer. The interface-modulated kinetic differentials in electron and hole transfer rates underpin the more effective charge separation, reduced charge recombination, and greater photocatalytic efficiency observed for the LAA-derived Sb2VO5/CdSe QD heterostructures.
