The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of 2% chlorhexidine (CHX) on an etch-and rinse adhesive to dentin. Caries-free molars were selected and processed to expose a flat dentin surface. The specimens were bonded with a composite resin by an etch-and-rinse adhesive, which was pretreated with 2% CHX for 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 seconds. The microtensile bond strength (MTBS) was evaluated before and after thermocycling. No significant differences were observed between groups before thermocycling. The 60-second CHX-pretreated group showed a significantly greater MTBS than the control group after thermocycling. The 2% CHX pretreatment could improve the bonding strength of the etch-and-rinse adhesive and slow down the aging progress of the bonding interface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This retrospective clinical study compared two different professional maintenance therapy (MT) approaches (with and without periodic removal and decontamination of prosthetic components) on peri-implant inflammatory clinical and biochemical parameters after 5 years of implant function. A retrospective analysis based on patient records was used to assess inflammatory clinical and biochemical parameters around dental implants placed by the same clinician in a private practice. The Plaque Index (PI), peri-implant probing depth (PPD), mucosal recession (REC), bleeding on probing (BOP), and radiographic marginal bone level were determined at baseline and at each follow-up year. Moreover, at the last follow-up visit, the peri-implant intrasulcular levels of active metalloproteinasis 8 (aMMP-8) were also assessed. All participants were under MT with a 6-month recall interval. A total of 92 patients with 132 implants were selected. At the end of the study period, 12 patients with 12 implants were classified as dropouts. The remaining 80 patients and 120 implants were classified into two groups: Group 1 (42 patients, 62 implants) received MT with periodic removal and decontamination of prosthetic components; Group 2 (38 patients, 58 implants) received MT without periodic removal and decontamination of prosthetic components. No statistical differences were found between the groups regarding PI, PPD, and REC. Group 1 presented a statistically significant higher number of sites with BOP (12.4% vs 6.2%). Marginal bone loss was statistically higher in Group 2 than in Group 1 (0.23 ± 0.6 mm vs 0.78 ± 0.3 mm). Intrasulcular levels of aMMP-8 were statistically higher in Group 1 than in Group 2. The supplemental application of periodic removal and decontamination of prosthetic components during MT had a significantly positive effect on the inflammatory status of periimplant tissues. This study compared the onset of vascular bleeding between osseodensification and conventional drilling of implant osteotomy sites. Patients with type III trabecular bone requiring a single missing tooth replacement were included and allocated to either Group A (test) or Group B (control). In Group A, the osseodensification group (OD), an implant osteotomy was carried out using Densah Burs (Versah) in the counterclockwise direction; in Group B, the standard drilling group (SD), Densah Burs were run in the clockwise direction. An endoscope was introduced into the osteotomy to visualize and measure the time taken for initiation of bleeding (Bl) and for blood to fill the osteotomy site (BF). A total of 40 osteotomy sites (23 in the maxilla and 17 in the mandible) were included in this cross-sectional study. The mean age of study participants was 50.1 ± 8.28 years. The mean Bl time for Groups A and B was 18.54 ± 2.48 seconds and 16.89 ± 1.92 seconds, respectively (P = .02); the mean BF time for Groups A and B was 41.92 ± 3.19 seconds and 37.95 ± 2.73 seconds, respectively (P < .001). Osseodensification does not seem to negatively affect or induce loss of bone vascularity. This study evaluated the clinical efficacy of the coronally advanced lingual flap (CALF) technique in terms of the extent of lingual and buccal flap advancement, the maintenance of primary wound closure, and safety in comparison to buccal flap advancement alone during horizontal ridge augmentation in the posterior mandible. A total of 14 patients were randomly allocated to two different groups: buccal flap advancement without the CALF technique (control), referred to as the NO-CALF group, and buccal flap advancement with the CALF technique (test), referred to as the CALF group. Wound healing was monitored weekly for the first 4 weeks, then at 2, 4, 6, and 9 months postoperatively for any sod tissue dehiscence (titanium mesh [TM] exposure) along the incision line. The extent of lingual and buccal flap advancement was measured, and any intraoperative and postoperative CALF-related complications were reported. The difference between groups was statistically significant (P < .0001) in terms of (1) TM exposure: 83.3% of cases in the NO-CALF group showed early Class П exposures, whereas the CALF group showed no exposure; (2) mean lingual flap advancement: 3.9 ± 1.1 mm and 14.4 ± 3.8 mm for the NO-CALF and CALF groups, respectively; and (3) mean buccal flap advancement: 15.8 ± 2.1 mm and 10.5 ± 1.4 mm for the NO-CALF and CALF groups, respectively. There were no reported complications related to the CALF technique. Tension-free primary wound closure was facilitated and maintained during the healing period by applying the CALF technique, which is a reliable technique to safely advance the lingual flap coronally. This article investigated the effects of airborne-particle abrasion and nanosilica (nano-Si) infiltration treatment on the surface characteristics of dental zirconia. A total of 15 unsintered zirconia ceramic green bodies (10 x 10 x 3 mm) were divided into three groups (n = 5): Group C, no treatment after sintering; Group S, airborne-particle abrasion with 50-p.m aluminum oxide particles after sintering; and Group N, infiltration of nano-Si followed by sintering and hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching. The zirconia disks' surface roughness was analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The surface morphology of the specimens was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the chemical composition was analyzed by energy-dispersive x-ray (EDX). Data were statistically analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis test (P < .05). Zirconia surface treatments by infiltration of nano-Si, sintering, and HF etching showed multiple changes in the surface features. The surface roughness of Groups C, S, and N were 0.88 ± 0.07 µm, 1.26 ± 0.10 µm, and 1.69 ± 0.15 µm, respectively. The surface roughness of Group N was significantly higher than that of Groups C and S (P < .05). EDX analysis showed peaks that corresponded to silica (Si) after infiltration with colloidal Si that disappeared following acid etching. Infiltrating nano-Si increases the surface roughness of zirconia. The formation of retentive nanopores on the surface potentially improves the zirconia-resin cement bonding strengths. Gingival recession is an apical shift of the gingival margin with exposure of the root surface to the oral cavity, which creates an esthetic problem. The present study was attempted to compare vestibular incision subperiosteal tunnel access (VISTA) with and without advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) in the treatment of Miller Class I gingival recessions. A total of 24 patients were assigned randomly to either the test group (VISTA with A-PRF) or the control group (VISTA alone). Clinical parameters like recession depth, recession width, clinical attachment loss, width of keratinized gingiva, gingival thickness, and probing depth were recorded at baseline and at 3 and 6 months postoperatively. Intergroup comparison of mean root coverage (RC) in mm, %RC, change in width of keratinized gingiva and clinical attachment gain revealed no statistically significant difference (P > .05). Change in gingival thickness showed statistically significant improvement in test group. Within the limitations of this study, both treatment options (VISTA with A-PRF and VISTA alone) have resulted in predictable and comparable RC, with increased gingival thickness in the test group. The aim of this study was to compare radiographic and clinical status and peri-implant sulcular fluid (PISF) prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) levels among patients with and without peri-implant disease. Patients with peri-implant mucositis (PiM) (Group 1) and peri-implantitis (Group 2) and individuals without peri-implant disease (Group 3) were included. Demographic information was collected, and peri-implant modified plaque and bleeding indices (mPI and mBI), probing depth (PD), and crestal bone loss (CBL) were recorded. PISF samples were collected and PGE2 levels measured. Statistical significance was set at P < .01. A total of 22 patients with PiM, 22 with peri-implantitis, and 23 without peri-implant disease (controls) were included. Scores of mPI (P < .01), mBI (P < .01), and PD (P < .01) were higher in patients with PiM and peri-implantitis than the controls. The volumes of collected PISF were significantly higher in patients with peri-implantitis (P < .01) compared to patients with PiM and the controls. The PISF volume was significantly higher in PiM patients (P < .01) than in the controls. There was a significant correlation between peri-implant PD and PISF PGE2 levels in patients with peri-implantitis (P < .001). Raised PISF PGE2 levels indicate poor peri-implant health; therefore, PGE2 is a potential biomarker for the assessment of peri-implant health status. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This retrospective study evaluated the survival rate and the clinical outcome of an endosseous implant system, as well as the marginal bone level (MBL) and the impact of the machined collar neck position on crestal bone level changes up to 2 years later. A total of 96 implants were placed in 57 patients and loaded with a final restoration after at least 3 months of healing: 15 implants were immediately placed into fresh extraction sockets, and 81 were placed in healed ridges. Marginal bone loss around implants was determined radiographically at 12 to 24 months postloading. The effects on marginal bone loss of the site (mandible vs maxilla), location (anterior vs posterior), immediate vs delayed implant, smoking habit, sex, implant length and diameter, prosthesis type (screw-retained/cemented), and the machined collar position were evaluated. The implant survival rate was 98.96% at 1 year. The mean MBL decreased significantly (0.238 mm) between baseline and loading (P < .001; post hoc test) and decreased by 0.154 mm between loading and 1 year, but this was not significant (P = .085; post hoc tests). After 2 years, the mean MBL decreased significantly (0.263 mm) between baseline and loading (P < .001) and decreased by 0.111 mm between loading and 1 year and by 0.199 mm between loading and 2 years, but these were not significant (P > .05; post hoc tests). The mean bone loss after 1 and 2 years was not significantly associated with implant type or site, smoking habit, or type of implant surgery (P = .792). However, the mean bone loss was significantly associated with the type of prosthesis and was significantly greater for cemented prostheses compared to screw-retained prostheses. A supracrestal position of the machined collar (tissue level) was associated with no bone loss, while placing the collar below the alveolar crest led to bone loss over 2 years. This study clinically and histologically evaluated the outcome of a porcineapatite xenograft used to elevate the maxillary sinus floor in a severely atrophic ridge. A two-stage crestal window sinus elevation protocol was conducted in 24 patients with crestal bone ≤ 2 mm. Highly porous porcine carbonate apatite moistened with saline solution was placed in the elevated sinus cavity as the sole grafting material. Bone core biopsy samples were taken at 6, 9, and 12 months after sinus augmentation surgery (at implant placement). Treatment outcomes were assessed using microCT (μCT) and histologic analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by post-hoc Dunn multiple comparison test. At 6 months after implant placement, all implants achieved good primary stability (insertion torque ≥ 30 Ncm) and successfully osseointegrated. The residual graft amount (mean ± SE) was low (11.91% ± 1.99%) at 6 months and further decreased (6.11% ± 2.64%) by 12 months. On the contrary, the amount of new bone detected was 18.94% ± 4.08% at 6 months and was significantly (P < .05) increased (40.16% ± 5.27%) at 12 months. Histologic assessment revealed osteoclasts actively resorbing the graft as well as osteoblasts actively forming new bone. In the severely atrophic maxilla, the porcine-apatite xenograft promotes new bone formation while being slowly absorbed. The primary aim of this study was to assess the histomorphometric outcomes of extraction sockets grafted with freeze-dried bone allograft (FDBA) and sealed with a collagen membrane after 3 months of healing in specific region of interest (ROI) areas. The secondary aims were to analyze the biomaterial resorption rate, the bone-to-biomaterial contact (BBC), and the area and perimeter of grafted particles compared with commercially available FDBA particles. Fifteen patients underwent tooth extractions and ridge preservation procedures performed with FDBA and a collagen membrane. Bone biopsy samples were harvested after 3 months at the time of implant placement for histologic and histomorphometric analysis. Two areas of concern (ROI1 and ROI2) with different histologic features were identified within the biopsy samples; ROI1, ROI2, and commercially available particles were analyzed and compared. The following parameters were analyzed: newly formed bone, marrow space, residual graft particles, perimeter and area of FDBA particles, and BBC. The histomorphometric analysis showed 35.22% ± 10.79% newly formed bone, 52.55% ± 16.06% marrow spaces, and 12.41% ± 7.87% residual graft particles. Moreover, the histologic data from ROI1 and ROI2 showed that (1) the mean percentage of BBC was 64.61% ± 27.14%; (2) the newly formed bone was significantly higher in ROI1 than in ROI2; (3) the marrow space was significantly lower in ROI1 than in ROI2; and (4) the FDBA particles in ROI1 sites showed significantly lower area and perimeter when compared to commercially available FDBA particles. This latter data led to the hypothesis that FDBA particles embedded in newly formed bone undergo a resorption/remodeling process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To investigate bone regeneration among three different bone graft materials in a rat calvarum model. Materials and Methods: A total of 24 rats had two 5-mm defects placed per calvarial. Rats were divided into four groups: bovine xenograft (XG), demineralized bone matrix (DBM), mineralized bone graft (MBG), and collagen membrane control (CC). Within each group, samples were collected at two time points: 4 weeks (T4) and 8 weeks (T8). Bone regeneration was assessed by microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) imaging and was analyzed using MATLAB software. Additionally, the fixed samples were subsequently demineralized for immunohistochemistry and histomorphometry. Slides were mounted and stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stain as well as bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) and runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) markers. The numbers of positive cells/area were calculated for each group and analyzed. Results: At 4 weeks, DBM showed low mineral density (7.7%) compared to the control (25.2%), but increased dramatically at 8 weeks (DBM, T8 = 27.6%; CC, T8 = 27.2%). Xenograft material showed an increase in mineral desnity between T4 and T8 (XG, T4 = 25.0%; XG, T8 = 32.3%). MBG remained consistent over the 8-week trial period (MBG, T4 = 30.4%; MBG, T8 = 30.4%). BMP-2 expression was present in cells adherent to all graft materials. RUNX2 expression was also observed in cells adherent to all graft materials, indicating that during the 4- to 8-week healing period, all materials supported osteogenesis. Conclusions: Compared to other materials, the DBM had high osteoinductive properties during the 4- to 8-week time period based on increased mineral content. Purpose: To use histomorphometric analysis to evaluate bone reconstruction in rabbit calvaria with autogenous bone, anorganic bovine bone, undecalcified human tooth bone (UdTB), and decalcified human tooth bone (dTB) grafts. Materials and Methods: Extracted human teeth were crushed, and tooth bone with and without decalcification was prepared. Bony defects were made in 10 rabbit calvaria and allocated to one of the following four groups: group 1, in which UdTB was grafted; group 2, in which dTB was grafted; group 3, in which anorganic bovine bone was grafted; group 4, in which autogenous bone was grafted. The rabbits were sacrificed at 2 or 8 weeks postoperatively, and histomorphometric comparison was performed. Results: Histologically, new bone formation was observed at the defect margin and around all graft materials. The dTB group revealed significantly greater new bone areas at 2 and 8 weeks compared to the UdTB group and the anorganic bovine bone group (P < .05). The dTB group revealed no significant difference in the new bone area at 2 weeks but revealed significantly less new bone area at 8 weeks compared to the autogenous bone group (P < .05). The dTB group also revealed significantly less graft material area compared to the anorganic bovine bone group at 8 weeks (P < .05). The autogenous bone group revealed significantly less graft material area and significantly greater bone marrow area compared to other groups at 8 weeks (P < .05). Conclusions: Grafting with dTB resulted in better bone regeneration than UdTB and anorganic bovine bone grafting at 8 weeks and addresses the potential disadvantages of autogenous bone grafting. Purpose: To comparatively evaluate transcrestal sinus floor elevation (tSFE) and lateral sinus floor elevation (lSFE) at sites with different residual bone heights (RBHs). Materials and Methods: A re-analysis of data from a parallel-arm, randomized trial comparatively evaluating tSFE and lSFE was performed. Within each RBH interval (< 4 mm or ≥ 4 mm), tSFE and lSFE groups were compared for chair time, surgery-related costs, morbidity, and radiographic parameters (including the proportion of the implant surface in direct contact with the radiopaque area [totCON%]). Results: The intention-to-treat (ITT) population consisted of 29 and 28 patients in the tSFE and lSFE groups, respectively. Irrespective of RBH, both tSFE and lSFE lead to a median totCON% of 100%. At sites with RBH < 4 mm, pain severity was significantly higher at days 0 and 1 in the tSFE group, with no intergroup difference in the dose of analgesics. LSFE was associated with a significantly higher frequency of bruising and greater cost. At sites with RBH ≥ 4 mm, a significantly lower frequency of postoperative signs/symptoms, less chair time, and lower costs were observed in the tSFE group. Conclusions: The selection of tSFE or lSFE within the investigated RBH intervals seems to be supported by differences in chair time, costs, and morbidity between the two techniques. At sites with RBH < 4 mm, clinicians preferring tSFE should encourage the administration of analgesics according to a predefined plan in the early postoperative phase. At sites with RBH ≥ 4 mm, tSFE should be preferred to lSFE due to reduced chair time, costs, and morbidity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To examine the changes of dentoalveolar structures and pathologies in the maxillary sinus before and after dental implant surgery alone or with direct vs indirect sinus lifting using CBCT images of the maxillary posterior region. Materials and Methods: Preoperative and postoperative CBCT images of 50 sinus sites and the alveolar bone around 83 implants in 28 patients were evaluated. Maxillary sinus pathologies were classified as mucosal thickening (MT), mucus retention cyst (MRC), polyp, and sinusitis before and after surgery. The changes after surgery were determined to be no change, reduction in pathology, or increase in pathology. Comparisons of pathology changes among the treatment groups were evaluated statistically with chi-square test, McNemar test, and Mann-Whitney U test. Results: Of the 50 sinuses evaluated for the presence of sinus pathology, 24 of 50 did not change postoperatively, the pathology increased in 10 sinuses, and the pathology decreased in 16. When the maxillary sinus regions were evaluated after indirect sinus lifting, direct sinus lifting, and in patients who had only implant surgery, there was no statistically significant difference between pathology distribution in terms of the procedure applied to the sinus (P > .05). However, in the maxillary sinuses with a pathology before implant placement were evaluated postoperatively, a statistically significant difference was found in favor of the presence of a change in pathology (ie, improvement or a decrease; P < .05). The maxillary sinuses without pathology before implant placement showed a statistically significant difference for no change; ie, continuation of the healthy state (P < .05). Conclusion: This study showed that surgical procedures could have a direct effect on the sinus membrane and maxillary sinus. Both the implant procedure and surgical approach may have an effect on maxillary sinus pathology, as well as an increase or decrease of the pathology. Purpose: To investigate cytokine levels in peri-implant crevicular fluid and thus evaluate the effects of concentrated growth factor (CGF) on osseointegration. Materials and Methods: A total of 40 mandibular implants were symmetrically placed in a group of 20 systemically healthy patients enrolled in the study. In each patient, one implant wetted with liquid infiltrated from fibrin matrix was placed in the test side (Group L), and the other implant was placed in the control side without the application of any material (Group C). Peri-implant crevicular fluid was collected at 2, 4, and 12 weeks later. Marginal bone loss was measured with panoramic radiographs taken immediately after implant placement and at 12 weeks. Resonance frequency analysis (RFA) of the implants was performed intraoperatively and at 4 and 12 weeks. Results: Stability values of the implants in the CGF liquid–treated sites were higher than those of the control group at week 12 (P = .005). There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of marginal bone loss (MBL). Group L showed increased levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL) at 2 and 4 weeks. Also, levels of osteoprotegerin (OPG) were higher in Group L at week 4 compared to Group C (P = .033). Conclusions: The increased TNF-α, RANKL, and OPG levels in this study demonstrate that CGF liquid can be used to accelerate peri-implant bone remodeling in the early phase of osseointegration. Purpose: Total hemoglobin mass (tHbmass) and blood volume (BV) are important determinants of maximal oxygen uptake and endurance capacity. Higher-caliber endurance athletes usually possess higher tHbmass and BV values. This study aimed to compare tHbmass and BV among swimmers of diverse competitive calibers and distances. Methods: Thirty swimmers (16 female and 14 male) participated in the study: 3 were tier 5, world class (869 [59] FINA points); 15 were tier 4, elite/international (853 [38] points); and 12 were tier 3, highly trained/national (808 [35] points). They specialized in competition distances ranging from 200 m to open-water 10 km. Between February 2019 and February 2020, all swimmers had their tHbmass and BV measured by carbon monoxide rebreathing 1 to 6 times and participated in multiple competitions and race events. Results: Relative tHbmass and BV were not different (P >.05) between tiers among women or among men (pooled tHbmass values 14.5 [0.5], 12.5 [1.5], 12.6 [2.3] g/kg for tier 5, tier 4, and tier 3, respectively). No differences were observed in relative tHbmass (P =.215) and BV (P =.458) between pool and open-water swimmers or between 200-, 400-, and 1500-m specialists (P >.05). No significant correlations were found between the highest measured absolute or relative tHbmass and BV and the highest FINA points scored over the follow-up period (R = −.42–.17, P =.256–.833), irrespective of competition distance. Conclusion: tHbmass and BV values did not differ between swimmers of different calibers or among competition distances. Furthermore, these values did not correlate with FINA points, either in males or in females. The present results indicate that hematological characteristics may have a lesser impact on swimming performance than on land-based endurance sports. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe individual training characteristics, racing strategies, and periodization in preparation for the Tour de France in 2 world-class road cyclists finishing in the top 5 of the general classification. Methods: Week‐by‐week power meter training and racing data of 2 (A and B) road cyclists (age: 29 and 23 y; maximum oxygen consumption: 83 and 81 mL·min−1·kg−1; and relative 20‐min record power output: 6.9 and 6.5 W·kg−1) in the preparation phase (December–July/August) leading up to the Tour de France were retrospectively analyzed. Weekly volume and intensity distribution in power zones were considered. Results: Cyclists A and B completed 46 and 19 races, 22.5 (6.3) and 18.2 (5.1) h·wk−1, with a pyramidal intensity distribution of 81.0%–13.3%–5.7%, and 88.8%–7.9%–3.3% in zone 1–zone 2–zone 3. Cyclist B spent 14 days at altitude. Increased high-intensity volume and polarization index occurred during race weeks. During periods without racing, training intensity progressively increased. Strength training was performed during November and December but not during the following months. During tapering, total exercise volume and time at high intensity decreased. Conclusion: These data provide novel insights into the periodization of world-class road cyclists in advance of a top 5 placing in the Tour de France general classification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to examine whether various athletic performances, anthropometric measures, and playing experience differentiate selected and nonselected ultimate Frisbee players trialing to compete in the world championship. Methods: Forty-three Australian male ultimate Frisbee players (age = 21.2 [1.2] y; height = 1.7 [6.8] m; body mass = 69.7 [8.2] kg; playing experience = 3.5 [1.5] y) participated in a 30-m sprint test, single-leg run-up jump approach (both left [JumpLL], and right leg [JumpRL]) and a stationary bilateral vertical jump (JumpBIL), and change-of-direction speed test. Following a selection camp, players were subdivided according to their selection or nonselection into the team. Results: A multivariate analysis of variance revealed that height, 10-m sprint time, acceleration, JumpLL, JumpRL, and JumpBIL were significantly greater for selected players than nonselected players (P <.05). Area under the curve (AUC) was greatest for JumpRL (AUC = 79%; optimal cutoff value of 37.5 cm, sensitivity and specificity values of 77% and 71%, respectively), JumpLL (AUC = 74%; optimal cutoff 38.5 cm, sensitivity and specificity values 77% and 77%, respectively), and JumpBIL (AUC = 78%; optimal cutoff value of 40.5 cm, sensitivity and specificity values 71% and 79%, respectively). The largest AUC (AUC = 81%; 95% CI 0.66–0.97; P =.001) was found when combining the explanatory variables that demonstrated moderate to large effect sizes (ie, height, playing experience, 10-m sprint, acceleration, JumpLL, JumpRL, and JumpBIL), with sensitivity of 93% and specificity of 71%. Purpose: To investigate the influence of menstrual-cycle (MC) phase on measures of recovery status, that is, resting heart rate, perceived sleep quality, and physical and mental readiness to train, among female endurance athletes. Methods: Daily data were recorded during 1 to 4 MCs (ie, duration ≥21 and ≤35 d, ovulatory, luteal phase ≥10 d) of 41 trained-to-elite-level female endurance athletes (mean [SD]: age 27 [8] y, weekly training: 9 [3] h). Resting heart rate was assessed daily using a standardized protocol, while perceived sleep quality and physical and mental readiness to train were assessed using a visual analog scale (1–10). Four MC phases (early follicular phase [EFP], late follicular phase, ovulatory phase, and midluteal phase [MLP]) were determined using the calendar-based counting method and urinary ovulation-prediction test. Data were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models. Results: Resting heart rate was significantly higher in MLP (1.7 beats·min−1, P =.006) compared with EFP without significant differences between the other MC phases. Perceived sleep quality was impaired in MLP compared with late follicular phase (−0.3, P =.035). Physical readiness to train was lower both in ovulatory phase (−0.6, P =.015) and MLP (−0.5, P =.026) compared with EFP. Mental readiness to train did not show any significant differences between MC phases (P >.05). Conclusions: Although significant, the findings had negligible to small effect sizes, indicating that MC phase is likely not the main determinant of changes in measures of recovery status but, rather, one of the many possible stressors. Purpose: This study assessed physical activity (PA) and body composition of ambulatory children and adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP) and their typically developing peers. Methods: Participants included youth with CP (ages 8–18 y and Gross Motor Function Classification System [GMFCS] levels I–III) and their typically developing peers. Outcomes included PA (actigraphy) and fat/lean mass index (FMI/LMI; dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry). Statistical analyses included linear mixed effects models with Bonferroni adjustment. Fixed effects were study group (CP and typically developing); random effects were participant clusters (sex and age). Exploratory analyses included association of body composition and PA, GMFCS level, and CP involvement (unilateral and bilateral). Results: Seventy-eight participants (CP: n = 40, girls: n = 29; GMFCS I: n = 20; GMFCS II: n = 14; GMFCS III: n = 6) met inclusion criteria. Individuals with CP had lower moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA; β = −12.5; 98.3% confidence interval, −22.6 to −2.5 min; P =.004) and lower LMI (β = −1.1; 97.5% confidence interval, −2.1 to −0.0 kg/m2; P =.020). Exploratory analyses indicated increased LMI with greater MVPA (P =.001), reduced MVPA for GMFCS II (P =.005) and III (P =.001), increased sedentary time for GMFCS III (P =.006), and greater fat mass index with unilateral motor impairment (P =.026). Conclusions: The findings contribute to the knowledge base of increasing MVPA and LMI deficits with the greater functional impact of CP. Purpose: Compare tracking groups with cognitive control functions and plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factors concentrations from childhood to adolescence. Methods: This is a prospective study with 3 years of follow-up. At baseline, data from 394 individuals were collected (11.7 y), and data were obtained from 134 adolescents (14.9 y) at the 3-year follow-up. At both time points, anthropometric and maximal oxygen uptake data were collected. Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) groups were classified into high or low CRF. At follow-up, cognitive outcomes were collected via the Stroop and Corsi block test; plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factors concentrations were also analyzed. Results: Comparisons demonstrated that maintaining high CRF over 3 years results in shorter reaction time, better inhibitory control, and higher working memory values. Likewise, the group that moved from low to high CRF over 3 years presented better reaction time. Plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factors concentrations were higher for the group that increased its CRF over the 3 years in relation to the low–low group (90.58 pg·mL−1; P =.004). However, after scaling by an allometric approach, differences were only found for reaction time and working memory between high–high and high–low groups. Purpose: Examine the reliability of field-based fitness assessments in school-aged children with emotional or behavioral difficulties (EBD). Understanding the impact of fitness on physical activity participation for children with EBD is limited by our ability to reliably measure it. Methods: Fifteen children aged 7–12 years with EBD completed 7 assessments—standing broad jump, overhead throw, grip strength, isometric plank hold, isometric wall squat, unilateral heel raise, and modified 6-minute walk test—in a random order on 2 separate occasions. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were computed to evaluate reliability. Results: ICCs ranged from.65 to.99 representing moderate to excellent reliability for all assessments. Shorter assessments requiring less attention and behavior regulation tended to demonstrate higher ICC values while assessments with greater attention or behavioral regulation demands tended to have lower ICC values. Conclusion: Results demonstrate varied reliability for fitness tests in children with EBD. Practitioners can use grip strength and standing broad jump assessments with confidence. The purpose of this article is to examine the content of previously published empirical literature utilizing self-efficacy theory with regard to physical education teachers' perceived self-confidence to teach students with disabilities in general physical education. Keyword searches were used to identify relevant literature from electronic databases published from 2000 to 2022. Twenty-four articles, from 11 countries, met all inclusion criteria, and relevant data regarding participants, theory, measurement, research design, and dependent variables were extracted. Of the 24 studies, nine were survey validation, eight were experimental, six were cross-sectional, and one was mixed-methods design. Major findings across the examined studies indicate that teachers' perceptions of training, amount of experience, and support from personnel significantly influence their self-efficacy toward teaching students with disabilities. Spasticity is a common impairment within pediatric neuromusculoskeletal disorders. How spasticity contributes to gait deviations is important for treatment selection. Our aim was to evaluate the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying gait deviations seen in children with spasticity, using predictive simulations. A cluster analysis was performed to extract distinct gait patterns from experimental gait data of 17 children with spasticity to be used as comparative validation data. A forward dynamic simulation framework was employed to predict gait with either velocity- or force-based hyperreflexia. This framework entailed a generic musculoskeletal model controlled by reflexes and supraspinal drive, governed by a multiobjective cost function. Hyperreflexia values were optimized to enable the simulated gait to best match experimental gait patterns. Three experimental gait patterns were extracted: (1) increased knee flexion, (2) increased ankle plantar flexion, and (3) increased knee flexion and ankle plantar flexion when compared with typical gait. Overall, velocity-based hyperreflexia outperformed force-based hyperreflexia. The first gait pattern could mostly be explained by rectus femoris and hamstrings velocity-based hyperreflexia, the second by gastrocnemius velocity-based hyperreflexia, and the third by gastrocnemius, soleus, and hamstrings velocity-based hyperreflexia. This study shows how velocity-based hyperreflexia from specific muscles contributes to different spastic gait patterns, which may help in providing targeted treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thoracic hyperkyphosis could affect mobility and independence of older adults. However, there was no clear evidence on the use of the seventh cervical vertebra wall distance (C7WD), a practical measure for thoracic hyperkyphosis, to indicate mobility deficits relating to independence of these individuals. This study explored the ability of C7WD to determine mobility impairments in 104 older adults. Participants (average age of 74.1 ± 7.4 years) with various degree of thoracic kyphosis were cross-sectionally measured for their C7WD, mobility, and Cobb angle. The findings indicate that participants with thoracic hyperkyphosis (Cobb angle = 46.1 ± 5.2°) had significantly poorer mobility than those without thoracic hyperkyphosis (Cobb angle = 32.8 ± 5.9°, p <.05). A C7WD of ≥7.8 cm could indicate mobility deficits of the participants (sensitivity = 71%–92%, specificity = 75%–94%, and area under the curve >0.80). Although dance interventions may have lots of advantages in improving frailty, there are few papers focusing on the effects such interventions have on frail older adults living in the community setting. This study investigates whether a dance intervention can improve the level of frailty among Chinese older adults living in the community setting. The dance intervention was done five times a week for 16 weeks. Participants in the control group maintained their normal daily activities. Assessments were conducted at baseline, 8 weeks, and 16 weeks. Mixed models were used to test for the effects on frailty, depression, short physical performance battery, and grip strength between the groups over time. The level of frailty (p <.05) and depression (p <.001) decreased, and short physical performance battery (p <.001) increased over time in the dance group compared with the control group. Objective: To clinically and histologically evaluate the potential effect of a cross-linked, high molecular weight hyaluronic acid (xHyA) on the outcomes of guided bone regeneration performed with a demineralized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) covered with a natural collagen membrane. Method and materials: Eleven patients (eight females and three males, mean age53years) with a total of 27 surgical sites were treated. Treatments were performed with either DBBM and natural collagen membrane fixed with tacks (group A) or DBBM mixed with xHyAand subsequently covered with natural collagen membrane (group B). Clinical evaluations were made at baseline (Tl), immediately after guided bone regeneration (T2), and at the time of implant placement (T3). Additionally, at the time of implant placement, core biopsies were retrieved and submitted for histologic analysis. Results: Healing was uneventful in all cases. At 6months, group B revealed a statistically significantly higher crestal ridge dimension compared to group A (P =.007). The histologic analysis revealed a tendency for greater mineralized tissue formation in group B compared to group A (67.5% versus 41.6%) and contained a higher amount of new bone (37.2%) and less DBBM residues (20.9%) than group A (12.8% new bone and 28.8% DBBM residues, respectively). Conclusions: Within their limits, the present data indicate that, during guided bone regeneration with natural collagen membrane, the combination of DBBM and xHyA may improve the qualityand quantityof boneformed with DBBM alone. Purpose: There has been a proliferation in technologies in the sport performance environment that collect increasingly larger quantities of athlete data. These data have the potential to be personal, sensitive, and revealing and raise privacy and confidentiality concerns. A solution may be the use of synthetic data, which mimic the properties of the original data. The aim of this study was to provide examples of synthetic data generation to demonstrate its practical use and to deploy a freely available web-based R Shiny application to generate synthetic data. Methods: Openly available data from 2 previously published studies were obtained, representing typical data sets of (1) field- and gym-based team-sport external and internal load during a preseason period (n = 28) and (2) performance and subjective changes from before to after the posttraining intervention (n = 22). Synthetic data were generated using the synthpop package in R Studio software, and comparisons between the original and synthetic data sets were made through Welch t tests and the distributional similarity standardized propensity mean squared error statistic. Results: There were no significant differences between the original and more synthetic data sets across all variables examined in both data sets (P >.05). Further, there was distributional similarity (ie, low standardized propensity mean squared error) between the original observed and synthetic data sets. Conclusions: These findings highlight the potential use of synthetic data as a practical solution to privacy and confidentiality issues. Synthetic data can unlock previously inaccessible data sets for exploratory analysis and facilitate multiteam or multicenter collaborations. Purpose: To compare the effects between resisted sled sprint training (RSS) and unresisted sprint training (URS) on sprint and acceleration performance, vertical jump, and maximal strength during an 8-week period of preseason training. Methods: Twenty-six recreational active rugby players were randomly divided into either RSS or URS training groups and then performed 8 weeks of training, 2 sessions/wk of sprint-specific training program. The RSS group performed sprints by towing a sled overloaded with 12.6% of body mass for 2 of the 3 sets of 3 × 20-m sprints, plus one set was carried out with unresisted modality. The URS groups performed 3 sets of 3 × 20-m unresisted sprints. The measures of 10- and 30-m sprint times, vertical jump, and 3-repetition-maximum (3-RM) squat tests were performed at baseline and after 8 weeks. Results: Ten- and 30-m sprint times (P <.05 and η p 2 >.44) improved significantly more in RSS than in URS. Both groups improved significantly in vertical jump and 3-RM squat tests; however, no significant differences (P >.1 and η p 2 <.11) between groups were found. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that an 8-week program of RSS is more effective than URS for enhancing sprint time performance in male recreational active rugby players. In addition, these data suggest that a sled overload corresponding to 12.6% of body mass can induce positive effects on both acceleration and speed performance in recreational active rugby players. Purpose: Variable-speed control in the field is challenging for motion science. Tests were performed to evaluate speed, Froude number, and oxygen consumption if these varied when using the same frequency of steps. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of auditory feedback to control variable speed on the treadmill and track during acceleration cycles around the transition speed. Methods: Twenty-four trained men participated. The protocol was based on 5 ramps of 50 seconds each around 80%, 90%, 100%, 110%, and 120% of the walking–running transition speed, recording the frequency of steps with a mobile phone during the treadmill test. The tests were replicated on the track using auditory feedback. Results: When evaluating each speed of the protocols separately for the same frequency of steps, the average speed on the track was always higher on average at 54.7% compared to the laboratory (P <.050), and on the track, it was 16.2% higher than in the laboratory (P >.050). Conclusions: It cannot be considered that the same frequency of steps is equivalent to the same speed in the laboratory and on the track. Tracing the evolutionary milestones of our species has been the focus of much exciting research. Yet, we are still unable to ‘locate' the divergence point of our cognitive evolution, which has made us so unique in the animal kingdom (Tomasello & Rakoczy, 2003). We have identified a gap in our understanding, and that is the absence of a systematic exploration into the symbiotic relationship between Homo sapiens and fungi. This highly interdisciplinary symposium aims to address this oversight, emphasizing the important – yet underappreciated – role of fungi in cognitive contexts and challenge traditional views of cognition.

Pointing is an intuitive and commonplace communication modality. In human-robot collaborative tasks, human pointing has been modeled using a variety of approaches, such as the forearm vector or the vector from eye to hand. However, models of the human pointing vector have not been uniformly or comprehensively evaluated. We performed a user study to compare five different representations of the pointing vector and their accuracies in identifying the human's intended target in an object selection task. We also compare the vectors' performances to that of domestic dogs to assess a non-human baseline known to be successful at following human points. Additionally, we developed an observation model to transform the vector into a probability map for object search. We implemented our system on our robot, enabling it to locate and fetch the user's desired objects efficiently and accurately.

Humans learn and generate languages, music, games, and seemingly limitless varieties of other structures across domains. Unlike many AI systems, we often do so from little data. How do we learn such large varieties of richly structured representations so efficiently? One possibility is that people ``learn by programming,'' synthesizing data-generating algorithms to explain what we observe. We examine the nature and origins of this learning mechanism in adults, children, and nonhuman primates (macaque monkeys), using a highly unconstrained sequence prediction task. Although adults and children quickly learn many richly structured sequences, monkeys learn only the simplest sequences (e.g. lines). We test multiple learning models, finding that adults are best explained by a ``Language of Thought''-like program-learning model and monkeys by a simpler extrapolation strategy. Theory of Mind (ToM) is central to human social cognition, yet the roots of this capacity remain poorly understood. Both infants and nonhuman primates perform inconsistently on false belief tasks, limiting our understanding of the representations that characterize their ToM. Here, we seek to better understand this often-contradictory literature by dissecting these failures. Specifically, we focus on primates' characteristic null performance on false belief tasks. Across three studies, we find that—despite succeeding on a closely-matched control—rhesus monkeys fail to predict how agents with false beliefs will behave even when the agents perform highly unexpected, unlikely actions. We interpret this pattern of performance as evidence that monkeys have no representation of another agent's past awareness once the scene changes outside of that agent's view. This work moves beyond the success/failure dichotomy typically used to assess ToM, and instead gives a more precise characterization of primates' signature limits in ToM.

Spontaneous internally directed attention, such as mind wandering, typically hinders performance in cognitive tasks. The impact of intentional internally directed attention (IDA) – for instance, deliberately thinking about past or future events – on task performance, however, remains unclear. In our study, we employed a dual-task paradigm that involved self-referential stimuli in a color-recall visual working memory task. This approach revealed that intentional IDA more significantly influences performance compared to intentional externally directed attention (EDA). We observed larger late positive potentials (LPP) over medial frontal sensors, suggesting sustained stimulus processing over frontal sensors under IDA. Additionally, we noted a pattern of neural activity associated with internal attention: event-related desynchronization (ERD) in the alpha band (8-12 Hz) during the encoding phase and event-related synchronization (ERS) in the delay phase. In contrast, the EDA condition was marked by theta (4-8 Hz) band ERS during the delay period. These findings highlight distinct behavioral impacts and neural patterns associated with internally versus externally directed attention in dual-task settings.

Languages tend to describe who is doing what to whom by placing subjects before objects. This bias for agents is reflected in event cognition: agents capture more attention than patients in human adults and infants. We investigated whether this agent preference is unique to humans. We presented Guinea baboons (Papio papio, N = 13) with a change detection paradigm with chasing animations. The baboons had to respond to a colour change which was applied to either the chaser/agent or the chasee/patient. They were faster to detect a change to the chaser than to the chasee, which cannot be explained by low-level features in our stimuli. Our study suggests that baboons show an agent preference similar to human infants and adults. This may be an evolutionarily old mechanism that is shared between humans and other primates, which could have become externalised in language as a tendency to place the subject first.

Age-related memory decline is a multifaceted and heterogeneous process. Previous studies on working memory and episodic memory have demonstrated that older participants' memory for item-context bindings (e.g. the location in which an object appeared) drops dramatically, while memory for individual items is relatively preserved. Here, we extend this research in two ways: first, we study memory for ordered object sequences with spatial context, rather than single objects. Second, we investigate how blocked versus interleaved learning curricula affect independent (or marginal) sequence memory (i.e., which objects appeared, and which spatial locations were seen) versus joint sequence memory (which objects appeared where) for older versus younger adults. Across two behavioral experiments with 108 younger (18-35 years) and 100 older (over 65 years) adults, we found better memory for object sequences than position sequences and worst performance for joint object-position sequence reports in both age-groups. Notably, age differences in memory performance followed the same pattern, being least pronounced for sequential object memory and most for joint object-position sequences. Changing the learning curriculum such that either object or spatial location sequences repeated across times, rather than occurring in an interleaved fashion, improved memory performance in both age groups, but had a stronger effect on older than younger adults, suggesting that blocked learning curricula can help older adults with reallocation of limited cognitive resources.

Object Permanence (OP) is the understanding that objects continue to exist when not directly observable. To date, this ability has proven difficult to build into AI systems, with Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) systems performing significantly worse than human children. Here, DRL Agents, PPO and Dreamer-v3 were tested against a number of comparators (Human children, random agents and hard coded Heuristic agents) on three object permanence tasks (OP) and a range of control tasks. As expected, the children performed well across all tasks, while performance of the DRL agents was mixed. Overallthe pattern of performance across OP and control tasks did not suggest that any agent tested except children showed evidence of robust OP.

Traditional conceptions of inference emphasize explicit following of logical rules, often tied to the possession of natural language, thereby implying that non-human animals cannot make inferences. However, comparative research shows extensive evidence of the success of several species of non-human animals in nonverbal reasoning tasks, putting pressure on the traditional view. We deny two traditional assumptions about inference: the lingualism of thought, and the requirement of explicit rule following. We suggest instead a multidimensional model of inference illustrated through several case studies. Thereby, we categorize informational transfers across three dimensions by marking the degree of context-independence, the format of representation, and the type of perspectivity involved. By allowing for a more nuanced interpretation of empirical data than the traditional view, our framework is able to accommodate inferential behaviors of both linguistic and non-linguistic agents, and shed light on varied manifestations of inference across species and developmental stages.

We studied individual differences in broadcasters' multimodal adult-directed and child-directed communication. Forty-six female future broadcasters simulated live broadcasts for both adults and children. Effects of speakers' individual styles, empathy and the Big Five personality traits on adult-directed and child-directed language (e.g., prosody, linguistic features and gestures) were examined. Results showed that all multimodal cues in adult-directed and child-directed language were highly correlated, but there were larger individual variations in the degree of adjustments between the two language registers. Moreover, empathy and certain personality traits could not only predict multimodal language production, but also the degree of adjustments for child-directed communication. For example, higher-empathetic participants speak faster, louder with a higher pitch, use diverse but more frequent words, and produce more salient referential gestures. In conclusion, despite an individual language style, empathy and the Big Five personality traits influence speakers' multimodal language production and the degree of audience design.

This study compares creativity test performance in Individual versus Team settings, addressing a gap in research that mostly focuses on individual outcomes. A total of 120 individuals participated in two sessions. The first session involved cognitive assessments, including the Advanced Progressive Matrices (APM), the Creative Reasoning Test (CRT), and the Test for Creative Thinking–Drawing Production (TCT-DP), as well as mood and personality questionnaires. In the second session, participants were assigned to either an Individual or a Team condition (N=3 each), based on and controlling for APM scores. The same assessments, except for the personality questionnaire, were conducted in this second session. In the Team condition, members were encouraged to collaborate in solving the tasks. We tested whether the conditions have a differential effect on the second session performances, particularly on divergent and convergent thinking scores in CRT, and/or on TCT-DP scores and/or on APM scores.

Linguistic strategies humans use for communication are designed to meet the informational needs of their addressees. Speakers not only adapt their speech but also increase the rate of iconic gestures to enhance the clarity of a message for children. Although sign languages allow signers to take advantage of iconicity far more than what is possible in speech, little is known about whether signers use iconicity as a strategy in child-directed communication. In the present study, we used automatic video pose estimation to analyze descriptions aimed at a child (12yo) vs. an adult produced by 7 deaf adult signers of Italian Sign Language. Overall, signers used iconic constructions more than lexical signs and with comparable frequency in descriptions for both age groups. However, iconic constructions were longer in duration for children. Thus, the present study presents the first evidence that, unlike speakers, signers do not modulate quantitative but only qualitative aspects of iconicity for children.

The ability to manipulate and recognize abstract representations seems to be a fundamental aspect of human nature, existing since the dawn of our species and transcending cultural barriers. In contrast, non-human primates exhibit very limited proficiency in recognizing abstract representations. This research delves into this human singularity for visual abstraction, through neuroimaging experiments conducted in both humans and non-human primates. Stimuli presenting the same concept (e.g. a house or a face) but varying in abstraction levels (photos, drawings, symbols, and words) were initially presented to a monkey, while intracranial recording of his brain were obtained (16 Utah arrays distributed in V1, V4 and IT). Preliminary results indicate that monkey display early signs of abstraction, particularly for evolutionarily ancient categories such as faces. MEG and fMRI recordings of human subjects are also currently underway, striving to unveil the neuronal mechanisms that set our species apart in the domain of visual abstraction.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are quickly replacing internal combustion cars, which will soon become obsolete. Nonetheless, how drivers' perception and cognition deal with certain features of EVs remains largely unknown. In this study we focus on the role of in-car sound, specifically the artificial engine sounds, on drivers' speed perception and control. Previous studies indicate that removing or reducing engine sound leads drivers to underestimate speed and, consequently, to drive faster. Furthermore, evidence suggests that specific sound frequencies could play a role in this process, highlighting the importance of in-car sound features. We consider benefits and limitations of different research paradigms used in the field (mostly video based technique and driving simulation) and we propose an experimental protocol to systematically investigate the phenomenon. Finally, we suggest that the wider use of psychophysical methods on video recordings would benefit the research in the field and overcome some limitations of simulation studies.

Previous research has effectively employed the fast-paced action puzzle video-game Tetris for understanding the acquisition of extreme expertise in complex, dynamic environments. A common approach when contrasting expert to novice performance has been the dissection of their interactions with the environment into disjoint sub-tasks – such as Reaction Time (RT), measured by the input latency to new events on screen. The crucial, underlying assumption to this paradigm is task consistency at all levels of expertise. Using data collected from participants of the Tetris World Championship 2019 and from novices in our lab, we show that this assumption does not hold. While for novices the RT task type remains the same across all conditions, for experts - depending on environmental parameters - the nature of the RT task undergoes a shift and under specific conditions does not represent a RT task anymore. Thus, expert vs. novice sub-task comparison may not be a valid paradigm.

While students typically prefer multiple-choice learning, open-answer questions have frequently been found to be more effective, attributed to their role in promoting recall as opposed to recognition. Here, we examine increasing the effectiveness of multiple-choice testing as a learning tool, by using foils (incorrect answer options) that are similar in meaning and word form to the correct answer. Participants studied French-Dutch vocabulary in three learning conditions: one with unrelated foils, another with open questions, and a third using multiple choice questions with related foils. The related foils were either semantically or orthographically similar to the correct answer. The results showed no significant difference between the open questions and the related foils condition, indicating comparable effectiveness. Replicating earlier studies, the unrelated foils condition yielded significantly poorer learning outcomes. Overall, these results suggest that multiple-choice testing can be a viable alternative to open answer testing when utilizing related foils.

Human bodies follow similar designs. Yet, languages differ in how they divide the body into parts to name them (Brown 1976; Enfield et al. 2006; Majid et al. 2015; Huisman et al. 2021). In this study, we investigate the similarities and differences in naming two separate body parts with the same word, i.e., colexifications. Using a computational approach, we analyze networks of body part vocabularies across 1,028 languages. The analyses focus on the influence of perceptual features that lead to variations in body part colexification networks and on a comparison of network structures in different semantic domains. Results reveal that adjacent body parts are frequently colexified, while variations in vocabularies are influenced by perceptual features like shape and function. Compared to semantic domains like emotion and color, body part colexification networks show less variation across language families. This research presents the first large-scale comparison of body part vocabularies and provides important insights into the variability of a universal human domain.
