158. An External Perspective on Institutional Catholicity in Higher Education: A Case Study

Abstract

Catholic colleges and universities in America have significantly changed philosophically, demographically, legally, and financially during the past 5 decades. Since the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council in 1965, there has been considerable focus on attempting to accurately describe the Catholic identity for institutions affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. Called to embrace the modern world, Catholic institutions of higher learning have been challenged to retain their distinctiveness even as they have become more closely aligned with secular institutions within the academy. Because of this convergence of institutional similarities, how does a potential student come to understand institutional Catholic identity during the search process? With over 230 Catholic degree-granting institutions to choose from in the United States alone, the task of determining a "best-fit" for the student can be challenging. It is important to have a framework for independently determining the strength of institutional Catholicity for a student seeking a uniquely Catholic undergraduate experience. Specifically, this research identifies a set of 15 signal features for identification of a distinctively Roman Catholic institution of higher education within a framework for understanding institutional positioning with respect to the Roman Catholic Church from an external, or off-campus, perspective. In addition to the exploration of public documentation and the campus environment, select faculty and student leaders were interviewed at "Holy Catholic College" (a pseudonym) to understand their perspectives on the strength of Catholicity of their particular institution in the development of the framework and associated signal features. 160. Environmental Injustice, Tree Canopy Cover, and Academic Proficiency at Utah Public Primary Schools.

Abstract

Background: Tree canopy cover has mental and physical health benefits for children, yet distributional environmental injustices in tree canopy cover near schools are rarely investigated. Some evidence suggests that tree canopy coverage positively influences aggregated school-level children's academic proficiency metrics. There is a lack of research if canopy cover moderates the negative effect of particulate matter on academic proficiency. Methods: We linked data on schools from the National Center for Education Statistics, Utah's Student Assessment of Growth and Excellence, the National Land Cover Database, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. We used generalized estimating equations, which account for non-normally distributed data and clustering, to analyze data from the 2015 to 2016 school year. Results: Greater school social disadvantage (higher percentages of students qualifying for free/reduced price meals and higher percentages of racial/ethnic minority students) was significantly associated with reductions in tree canopy cover within 1000 m and 500 m of the school. Greater tree canopy coverage at 1000 m and 500 m was significantly associated with a lower percentage of students testing below proficient on year-end math and language arts exams. Additional days of peak fine particulate matter were associated with higher percentages of students testing below proficient in math. Discussion: Socially disadvantaged primary schools in Utah were surrounded by less canopy cover. There was a protective effect of tree canopy cover on academic proficiency in math and language arts. Conclusion: Findings suggest targeting carefully designed tree planting efforts at socially disadvantaged schools and testing interventions involving tree planting and changes in academic proficiency. 161. Racial/Ethnic and Insurance Status Disparities in Distance Traveled to Access Children’s Hospital Care for Severe Illness: the Case of Children with Leukodystrophies

Abstract

Families of children with special health care needs may travel substantial distances to access specialized health care. However, it is not known how race/ethnicity, insurance status, and access to disease-specific specialty care affect travel distances. This analysis examines patients aged 18 years or younger who were discharged from a Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) children’s hospital (n= 52) with a diagnosis of an inherited leukodystrophy between October 1, 2015, and September 30, 2018 (n= 950 patients). Leukodystrophies are rare but very serious neurological illnesses, with elevated mortality and morbidity rates. Bivariate and hierarchical generalized linear models reveal that white children, privately insured children, and children visiting leukodystrophy specialist centers travel farther for children’s hospital care. These findings indicate that socially privileged families travel greater distances to obtain specialized health care, which could affect clinical outcomes.

Abstract

This report discusses the need for a research agenda to understand how rural public schools can work with their communities to improve student performance while building the community. It focuses on the potential strengths of school-community relationships. Described herein are four community engagement models a school can adopt: (1) School as Community Center, a lifelong learning center, and a vehicle for delivering services; (2) Community as Curriculum, emphasizing the community in all of its complexities as part of students' learning activities in the classroom; (3) School as a Developer of Entrepreneurial skills, suggesting that small businesses, including knowledge-based enterprises, can create new jobs, especially if they find the right market niche; and (4) Schools and Technology, in which new technologies help build and preserve community while linking students to the rest of the world. Abstract

Having a diverse workforce in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine) fields is essential for the United States to remain competitive in the global economy and to create a more just society. Faculty‐mentored undergraduate research experiences have been identified as a high‐impact practice for encouraging students from diverse backgrounds to pursue STEMM education and careers. Despite extensive research examining factors influencing the effectiveness of mentor−mentee relationships, there is still limited understanding of how differences or similarities in the social identities of mentors and mentees, which we term mentor−mentee discordance, impact undergraduates' research experiences and outcomes. In this perspective, we propose that mentor−mentee discordance should be conceptualized as a multidimensional, continuous construct and suggest a global index to measure varying degrees of discordance in mentoring relationships. We also offer a conceptual model that incorporates the Discordance Index to systematize the understanding of the effects of discordant mentoring relationships on student development across social contexts and over time. 187. Divided We Fall: A Comparison of Appalachian Kentucky and Statewide Industrial Development Patterns. ASPI Research Series.

Abstract

This report surveys data from various Kentucky state government agencies and provides an assessment of economic problems in Kentucky's Appalachian region. A profile of the region and overview of the effectiveness of implemented programs are presented. Interviews with Area Development District Directors show a concern for the image of Appalachia. The data indicate that Kentucky has a division in its economic structure, where prosperity and high employment are primarily concentrated in certain metropolitan centers such as the Louisville-Covington-Newport area in the north-central part of the state. The western counties also have problems, but none as serious as those in the eastern Appalachian counties, which are in critical economic condition. The report raises the question, "Is there a more equitable way to distribute Kentucky's tremendous wealth?" This report and accompanying data may be useful to educational planners and policymakers in assessing training needs and economic trends that affect education. Suggestions for additional research to address the issue are listed. This report contains six tables and seven indices that list data relating to income, employment, and trends for Area Development Districts and individual counties. (ALL)

This bibliography lists available literature relating to the American Indians of Appalachia. Containing approximately 540 entries, the list includes publications on American Indians from prehistoric times up to the present. The materials focus primarily on the Shawnee and Cherokee tribes, which inhabited portions of what is now called central Appalachia, embracing the mountainous parts of Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. The listed citations touch upon areas of history, sociology, anthropology, and archeology, giving researchers access to information on the world of the Appalachian Indian: eating habits, migration routes, the use of African-American slaves, hunting grounds, medicines, relations with other Indians and White colonial powers, political systems, and intra-tribal struggles. Aside from Appalachian states, the cited literature also extends to surrounding areas, where the Shawnee and Cherokee carried their influence. Abstract

Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) in the Southeastern Atlantic Ocean (International Whaling Commission 'Breeding Stock B'--BSB) are distributed from the Gulf of Guinea to Western South Africa. Genetic data suggest that this stock may be sub-structured, but it remains unknown if this is due to reproductive segregation. This paper evaluates the spatial and temporal population structure of BSB humpback whales using a combination of maternally and bi-parentally inherited markers. The genetic differentiation that we identify in this study could be due to a combination of (1) spatial and/or temporal segregation on breeding grounds in the greater Gulf of Guinea, (2) the possibility of maternally inherited site fidelity to specific feeding grounds and (3) the use of two generalized but exclusive migratory routes (coastal and offshore) between feeding and breeding areas. Further, photo-identification and genetic sampling efforts in other areas of the Sub-Saharan Western Africa winter range and targeted deployment of satellite tags would help to clarify some of the apparent complexity in the population structure of animals biopsied in this region., Introduction Understanding the processes by which marine populations diverge or remain homogeneous remains a major challenge in evolutionary biology.
