Abstract

In exploring what constitutes effective teaching and learning in classrooms and schools, this article centres around the important role of evaluation in evidence-based practice as a means of establishing 'what works'. Professor Rob Coe, Director of the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring, Durham University, looks at ways of establishing high quality, local strategies to evaluate interventions to ensure that educators have a clear evidence on the efficacy of their innovative practices. Coe argues that three key questions need to be addressed in designing good evaluation: What exactly are you evaluating? What counts as success? What would have happened otherwise? Coe cites successful examples of teachers using effective evaluation strategies to inform better decision-making about what has worked for them, how to improve what may be capable of being made to work, and what to stop doing. He concludes that strong, real-time, local evaluation may offer the best route for converting evidence-based practice into authentic improvement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Reversals of the Earth's magnetic field reflect changes in the geodynamo-flow within the outer core-that generates the field. Constraining core processes or mantle properties that induce or modulate reversals requires knowing the timing and morphology of field changes that precede and accompany these reversals(1-4). But the short duration of transitional field states and fragmentary nature of even the best palaeomagnetic records make it difficult to provide a timeline for the reversal process(1,5). Ar-40/Ar-39 dating of lavas on Tahiti, long thought to record the primary part of the most recent 'Matuyama-Brunhes' reversal, gives an age of 795 +/- 7 kyr, indistinguishable from that of lavas in Chile and La Palma that record a transition in the Earth's magnetic field, but older than the accepted age for the reversal. Only the 'transitional' lavas on Maui and one from La Palma (dated at 776 +/- 2 kyr), agree with the astronomical age for the reversal. Here we propose that the older lavas record the onset of a geodynamo process, which only on occasion would result in polarity change. This initial instability, associated with the first of two decreases in field intensity, began similar to 18 kyr before the actual polarity switch. These data support the claim(6) that complete reversals require a significant period for magnetic flux to escape from the solid inner core and sufficiently weaken its stabilizing effect(7).

The present article describes a method to quantify the magnitude of the differences between two measures and/or the degree of the effect of a variable about criteria, and it is named likethe effect size measure, d. Abstract

The glycine decarboxylase complex (GDC) plays a critical role in the photorespiratory C2 cycle of C3 species by recovering carbon following the oxygenation reaction of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase. Loss of GDC from mesophyll cells (MCs) is considered a key early step in the evolution of C4 photosynthesis. To assess the impact of preferentially reducing GDC in rice MCs, we decreased the abundance of OsGDCH (Os10g37180) using an artificial microRNA (amiRNA) driven by a promoter that preferentially drives expression in MCs. GDC H- and P-proteins were undetectable in leaves of gdch lines. Plants exhibited a photorespiratory-deficient phenotype with stunted growth, accelerated leaf senescence, reduced chlorophyll, soluble protein and sugars, and increased glycine accumulation in leaves. Gas exchange measurements indicated an impaired ability to regenerate ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate in photorespiratory conditions. In addition, MCs of gdch lines exhibited a significant reduction in chloroplast area and coverage of the cell wall when grown in air, traits that occur during the later stages of C4 evolution. The presence of these two traits important for C4 photosynthesis and the non-lethal, down-regulation of the photorespiratory C2 cycle positively contribute to efforts to produce a C4 rice prototype.
