This work reports a facile and cost-effective method for synthesizing photoactive α-Fe(2)O(3) films as well as their performances when used as photoanodes for water oxidation. Transparent α-Fe(2)O(3) mesoporous films were fabricated by template-directed sol-gel chemistry coupled with the dip-coating approach, followed by annealing at various temperatures from 350 °C to 750 °C in air. α-Fe(2)O(3) films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, XPS, FE-SEM and electrochemical measurements. The photoelectrochemical performance of α-Fe(2)O(3) photoanodes was characterized and optimized through the deposition of Co-based co-catalysts via different methods (impregnation, electro-deposition and photo-electro-deposition). Interestingly, the resulting hematite films heat-treated at relatively low temperature (500 °C), and therefore devoid of any extrinsic dopant, achieve light-driven water oxidation under near-to-neutral (pH = 8) aqueous conditions after decoration with a Co catalyst. The onset potential is 0.75 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), thus corresponding to 450 mV light-induced underpotential, although modest photocurrent density values (40 μA cm(-2)) are obtained below 1.23 V vs. RHE. These new materials with a very large interfacial area in contact with the electrolyte and allowing for a high loading of water oxidation catalysts open new avenues for the optimization of photo-electrochemical water splitting.

The future of energy supply depends on innovative breakthroughs regarding the design of cheap, sustainable and efficient systems for the conversion and storage of renewable energy sources. The production of hydrogen through water splitting seems a promising and appealing solution. We found that a robust nanoparticulate electrocatalytic material, H(2)-CoCat, can be electrochemically prepared from cobalt salts in a phosphate buffer. This material consists of metallic cobalt coated with a cobalt-oxo/hydroxo-phosphate layer in contact with the electrolyte and mediates H(2) evolution from neutral aqueous buffer at modest overpotentials. Remarkably, it can be converted on anodic equilibration into the previously described amorphous cobalt oxide film (O(2)-CoCat or CoPi) catalysing O(2) evolution. The switch between the two catalytic forms is fully reversible and corresponds to a local interconversion between two morphologies and compositions at the surface of the electrode. After deposition, the noble-metal-free coating thus functions as a robust, bifunctional and switchable catalyst.

This section considers the treatment options for perimenopausal women with breast cancer. The perimenopause period begins in the so-called stage 2 of menopausal transition (early menopausal transition, where the length of the cycles changes by 7 days or more) and ends after 12 months of amenorrhea. It is characterized by an early increase in follicle-stimulating hormone and is associated with the presence of anovulatory cycles, irregular periods, and loss of menstrual cycles. The recommended treatment is tamoxifen (TAM) with or without ovarian ablation for 2 or 3 years followed by a re-evaluation. TAM should be maintained if the patient is premenopausal and aromatase inhibitors (AI) are recommended once the menopausal status is confirmed. Ovarian suppression is an acceptable adjuvant therapy in those patients with hormone-sensitive tumors. AI should only be used in postmenopausal women or in combination with chemical castration in premenopausal women. This supplement paper includes the key points of roundtable presentations and discussions of hormonal therapy in breast cancer.

Using proteomic approach in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) we identified pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) and Haptoglobin (Hp) as putative markers that could discriminate between AD and other dementias. ELISA assays were developed to measure the levels of PEDF and Hp in CSF from patients with AD (AD, n=27), non-AD (NAD, n=30) and in non-demented patients (ND, n=27). The combined assessment of PEDF, Hp and Tau levels, using Iterative Marginal Optimization, improved the differential diagnosis of AD, especially in patients with moderate to severe dementia (p<0.002). This pilot study highlights the probable different contribution of oxidative mechanisms in dementia.

We present a new approach for patterning thin films of Prussian blue at the micro- and nano-metric scales. In a first step, a resist was deposited on a gold surface and patterns were generated by photolithography or electron beam lithography. The Prussian blue with idealized formula of KFe(III)[Fe(II)(CN)6] was deposited through the sequential exposure of the patterned surface to a series of solutions containing alternately absorbable Fe3+ cations and [Fe(CN)6]4- anions. These building blocks are gradually associated into dense and continuous films and patterned structures of Prussian blue can be obtained finally by lift-off. This approach was also used to deposit Prussian blue thin films on interdigitated nanoelectrodes and the current-voltage characteristics of this device were investigated.

Much research has been directed toward the development of electrically switchable optical materials for applications in memory and display devices. Here we present experimental evidence for an electric-field-induced charge-transfer phase transition in two cyanometalate complexes: Rb(0.8)Mn[Fe(CN)(6)](0.93).1.62H(2)O and Co(3)[W(CN)(8)](2)(pyrimidine)(4).6H(2)O, involving changes in their magnetic, optical, and electronic properties as well. Application of an electric field above a threshold value and within the thermal hysteresis region leads to a transition from the high- to the low-temperature phase in these compounds. A model is proposed to explain the main observations on the basis of a para-ferroelectric transition. Our observations suggest that this new concept of electrical switching, based on materials exhibiting charge-transfer phase transitions with large thermal hysteresis loops, may open up doors for novel electro-optical devices.

A series of thin films of Prussian blue analogues is investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the Fe, Co and Mn L(2,3)-edges. The ligand field multiplet theory enables us to examine accurately the electronic structure of these materials. Experimental XAS spectra of CoFe Prussian blue analogues are successfully reproduced using a ground state configuration including metal-to-ligand (MLCT) and ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) at the Co and Fe L(2,3)-edges. In particular, a huge improvement is achieved for satellite peaks at the Co(iii) L(2,3)-edges compared to previous calculations in the literature based on LMCT effects only. On the other hand, XAS spectra of MnFe analogues synthesized for the first time, can be reproduced conveniently by taking into account either MLCT or LMCT depending on the conditions of the sample preparation. For each thin film, the proportion of the different oxidation states of Co, Fe and Mn is evaluated. Unexpectedly, this analysis reveals the presence of a significant amount of a reduced phase, which turns out to be strongly dependent on the sample synthesis and storage conditions.

Breast cancer growth and dissemination is regulated by estrogen and different growth factor receptor signalling pathways. The increasing knowledge of the biology of breast cancer regarding the interaction of these signalling pathways provides a tool to understand endocrine therapies response and resistance mechanisms. In patients with slowly progressive disease, no visceral involvement, and minimal symptoms, endocrine therapy could be the strategy of choice, even if the tumor has low estrogen receptor expression. Ovarian suppression and tamoxifen are recommended for premenopausal patients whether aromatase inhibitors are the option for postmenopausal ones. Chemotherapy still remains as the right alternative for hormone unresponsive or resistant patients. This is a review focused on the different strategies and combinations of endocrine therapies for metastatic breast cancer patients considering the potential strategies clinically tested to overcome resistance and the different treatments of choice available for each scenario of disseminated disease.

Single crystals of the {Fe (II)(pyrazine)[Pt(CN) 4]} spin crossover complex were synthesized by a slow diffusion method. The crystals exhibit a thermal spin transition around room temperature (298 K), which is accompanied by a 14 K wide hysteresis loop. X-ray single-crystal analysis confirms that this compound crystallizes in the tetragonal P4/ mmm space group in both spin states. Within the thermal hysteresis region a complete bidirectional photoconversion was induced between the two phases (high spin right arrow over left arrow low spin) when a short single laser pulse (4 ns, 532 nm) was shined on the sample.

Background: Brain metastasis and carcinomatous meningitis from gynecological tumors are an uncommon event, usually related to choriocarcinoma, ovarian and cervical cancer., Case: A 74-year-old woman was diagnosed with locally advanced vulvar squamous carcinoma. Initial therapy consisted of multiagent chemotherapy and vulvar, pelvis and groin irradiation. The patient subsequently developed widely spread metastatic disease including brain and meningeal metastases., Conclusion: The rising incidence of central nervous system metastasis in the last two decades is probably associated with treatment-related improvement in life expectancy. To our knowledge, this is the first case reported of brain metastases and meningeal carcinomatosis associated with vulvar squamous cell carcinoma.

Introduction: CNS metastases mean a great challenge. It has been suggested that the brain metastases incidence could be high in metastasic breast cancer patients receiving trastuzumab based-therapies., Material and Methods: We performed a descriptive analysis of our experience in this setting. 86 patients met the criteria (From Oct/99 to Oct/03)., Results: CNS progression occurred in 17 patients (19.5%). Mean age of CNS progression disease patients was 45.4 years while mean age for all the patients was 50.5 years. Response rate for the entire group of patients was: OR 39.7%; CB (OR + SD) 69%. Response rate to trastuzumab based-therapy was OR 82.4% and CB 88.2 at the time of CNS progression. Median time from the start of trastuzumab therapy up to the CNS progression was 10 months. OS was 23.4 weeks., Conclusions: The incidence of CNS involvement is high in young metastasic breast cancer women responding to trastuzumab-based therapies. This may lead to prophylactic cranial irradiation strategies or to the early detection in asymptomatic patients to improve surgery or radiosurgery results in these patients.

Malignant melanoma is the most rapidly increasing cancer in the world. Metastatic disease occurs in 20% of patients, and prognosis in these cases is poor. We report the case of a woman who presented breast metastasis as the first sign of recurrence of a melanoma.

Skin metastases are infrequent manifestations of solid tumours. However, it is important to recognize them since they may be the first evidence of a neoplasia, or a sign of tumour progression or recurrence. Skin metastases from gastric adenocarcinomas are particularly rare, and represent 6% of the total in males and 1% in females. We report, here, the case of a patient diagnosed with gastric adenocarcinoma with extensive subcutaneous infiltration of the abdominal wall, resulting in an abdominal cuirass.

Objectives: The combination of carboplatin, methotrexate and vinblastine (M-CAVI) is an active and well-tolerated regimen for patients with bladder cancer who are ineligible for cisplatin-based regimens. We have prospectively randomized patients with locally advanced (T2-4 N0 M0) or locoregional (Tx N1 M0) bladder cancer suitable for subsequent surgical treatment to M-VAC or M-CAVI chemotherapy., Methods: M-CAVI consisted of carboplatin (300 mg/m2 on day 1 and later adjusted to 4.5 mg/dl/min according to Calvert's formula), methotrexate (30 mg/m2 on days 1, 15 and 22) and vinblastine (3 mg/m2 on days 1, 15 and 22). After 3-4 cycles, the patients were assessed for surgical resection., Results: To date, 60 patients have been included. There were 58 completely evaluable patients, 27 were randomized to M-VAC and 31 to M-CAVI. The overall response rates were similar for M-VAC (48%; confidence interval 95%, 26%-67%) and M-CAVI (45%; confidence interval 95%, 28%-62%). The pathological complete responses were similar for the M-VAC and M-CAVI regimens for both the group with locally advanced (27% vs 39%, p = NS) and locoregional (14% vs 14%, p = NS) bladder cancer. The median actuarial survival for the M-VAC treated group was 23 months and 18 months for the M-CAVI. M-VAC therapy was statistically significantly associated with more events of granulocytopenic fever, grade 2-3 nausea and vomiting, grade 2 alopecia and grade 3-4 mucositis., Conclusions: The results achieved in the 60 patients included in the study indicate that M-CAVI is better tolerated than M-VAC, although both treatment regimens have similar overall response rates, pathological response rates and survival in patients with locally advanced and locoregional bladder cancer.
