Due to the high demands of deep neural network (DNN) based applications on computational capability, it is hard for them to be directly run on mobile devices with limited resources. Computation offloading technology offers a feasible solution by offloading some computation-intensive tasks of neural network layers to edges or remote clouds that are equipped with sufficient resources. However, the offloading process might lead to excessive delays and thus seriously affect the user experience. To address this important problem, we first regard the average response time of multi-task parallel scheduling as our optimization goal. Next, the problem of computation offloading and task scheduling for DNN-based applications in cloud-edge computing is formulated with a scheme evaluation algorithm. Finally, the greedy and genetic algorithms based methods are proposed to solve the problem. The extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods for scheduling tasks of DNN-based applications in different cloud-edge environments. The results show that the proposed methods can obtain the near-optimal scheduling performance, and generate less average response time than traditional scheduling schemes. Moreover, the genetic algorithm leads to less average response time than the greedy algorithm, but the genetic algorithm needs more running time.

Industrial Automation (IA) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) need an integrated platform. Due to the uncertainty of the time required for training or reasoning tasks, it is difficult to ensure the real-time performance of AI in the factory. Thus in this paper, we carry out a detailed survey on cloud-edge computing-based Industrial Cyber Intelligent Control Operating System (ICICOS) for industrial automation and artificial intelligence. The ICICOS is built based on IEC61499 programming method and used to replace the obsolete Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). It is widely known that the third industrial revolution produced an important device: PLC. But the finite capability of PLC just only adapts automation which will not be able to support AI, especially deep learning algorithms. Edge computing promotes the expansion of distributed architecture to the Internet of Things (IoT), but little effect has been achieved in the territory of PLC. Therefore, ICICOS focuses on virtualization for IA and AI, so we introduce our ICICOS in this paper, and give the specific details.

Booming growth of ubiquitous connections and clinical computerization in the 5th generation mobile communication era, the explosive increase and heterogeneity of clinical information have delivered enormous demanding situations to information processing, privacy and security, as well as data access in (IoMT) Internet of Medical Things. Our paper gives a complete evaluation of the way to understand the analysis and timely processing of big data in medical applications and the dropping of healthcare resources in high quality under the limitations of previous medical equipment and the medical environment. We mostly concentrate on the benefits carried via the artificial intelligence, edge computing and cloud computing concepts to IoMT. We also explain how to use clinical resources while keeping the privacy and security of clinical information, so that extremely good clinical services can be given to patients.

The use of cloud-edge technology creates significant potential for cost reduction, efficiency and resource management. These features have encouraged users and organizations to use intelligence federated cloud-edge paradigm in Internet of Things (IoT). Human Resource Management (HRM) is one of the important challenges in federated cloud-edge computing. Since hardware and software resources in the edge environment are allocated for responding human requests, selecting optimal resources based on Quality of Service (QoS) factors is a critical and important issue in the IoT environments. The HRM can be considered as an NP-problem in a way that with proper selection, allocation and monitoring resource, system efficiency increases and response time decreases. In this study, an optimization model is presented for the HRM problem using Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) in cloud-edge computing. Experimental results show that the proposed model was able to improve minimum response time, cost of allocation and increasing number of allocated human resources in two different scenarios compared to the other meta-heuristic algorithms.

This Special Section on ‘`Cloud-Edge Computing for Cyber-Physical Systems and Internet-of-Things’' is oriented to the dissemination of a few of those latest research and innovation results, covering many aspects of design, optimization, implementation, and evaluation of emerging cloud-edge solutions for CPS and IoT applications. The selected high-quality contributions cover a broad range of novel technologies and application scenarios in CPS and IoT. We hope that these accepted papers will produce long-lasting impacts, as well as stimulating and encouraging the international community to work on this exciting and impactful topic.

The industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has been widely deployed to provide autonomous inspection on current production status and quality of products for modern manufacturing. However, the IIoT sensors generally are short of computing capabilities and therefore could not offer acceptable latency for computation-intensive inspection tasks. Besides, the mission-critical industrial applications are extremely sensitive to inspection failure, which may lead to serious manufacturing problems or accidents. In this paper, we propose a risk-aware cloud-edge computing framework for the delay-sensitive inspections of autonomous manufacturing. Due to the uncertainty of 802.11ax, we utilize the conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) to measure the inspection risk basing on the distribution of channel access delay. We develop a branch-and-check (BNC) approach to optimally and efficiently deploy the decomposable inspection tasks with the minimum operation cost and acceptable latency. The extensive simulations guide the operational use for future IIoT and the results show that the proposed system can save a large amount of unnecessary operation cost by enabling the processor sharing strategy.

Space-aerial-assisted computation offloading has been recognized as a promising technique to provide ubiquitous computing services for remote Internet of Things (IoT) applications, such as forest fire monitoring and disaster rescue. This article considers a space-aerial-assisted mixed cloud-edge computing framework, where the flying unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) provide IoT devices with low-delay edge computing service and satellites provide ubiquitous access to cloud computing. We aim to minimize the maximum computation delay among IoT devices with the joint scheduling for association control, computation task allocation, transmission power and bandwidth allocation, UAV computation resource, and deployment position optimization. Through exploiting block coordinate descent and successive convex approximation, we develop an alternating optimization algorithm with guaranteed convergence, to solve the formulated problem. Extensive simulation results are provided to demonstrate the remarkable delay reduction of the proposed scheme than existing benchmark methods.
