161. Effects of the re-esterified triglyceride (rTG) form of omega-3 supplements on dry eye following cataract surgery

Abstract

Background/AimsTo evaluate the clinical outcomes of the systemic re-esterified triglyceride (rTG) form of omega-3 fatty acids in patients with dry eye symptoms after cataract surgery.MethodsThis prospective comparative cohort study comprised 66 patients complaining of new-onset non-specific typical dry eye 1 month after uncomplicated cataract surgery. Subjects were randomly allocated into control and omega-3 groups based on administration of the systemic rTG form of omega-3 fatty acids for 2 months, in addition to use of artificial teardrop. Ocular surface parameters (Schirmer’s test, tear break-up time, corneal staining score and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9)) and subjective questionnaire results (Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI)) and Dry Eye Questionnaire [DEQ]) for dry eye were evaluated before and after omega-3 supplementation.ResultsTwo months after omega-3 supplementation, the Oxford score was lower in the omega-3 group than in the control group. There was an improvement of subjective symptom scores of OSDI and DEQ in the omega-3 group (both p<0.05). The ratio of increasing MMP-9 level in the omega-3 group was lower than that in the control group (p=0.027).ConclusionThe rTG form of omega-3 supplementation might be related to reduction of ocular surface inflammation rather than secretion of tears, and it might be effective for non-specific typical dry eye after uncomplicated cataract surgery.Trial registration NumberNCT04411615.

Abstract

Purpose To investigate the effect of antioxidants and immunosuppresants on mixed peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) - chemically injured keratocytes reaction (MLKR). Methods The PBMC stimulation assay was performed using chemically injured keratocytes treated with 0.05 N NaOH for 90 s (MLKR). MLKR were treated with various drugs including rapamycin, dexamethasone, mycophenoleic acid (MPA), alpha lipoic acid (ALA), and N-acetyl cysteine (NAC). Matrix metalloprotease-9 (MMP-9), transforming growth factor–beta 1 (TGF-β1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) secretion profiles of activated PBMCs stimulated by NaOH-treated keratocytes were determined by ELISA. Results Anti-oxidants as well as immunosuppressants suppressed PBMC proliferation. MMP-9 levels were lower in antioxidants group. IL-6 levels decreased in dexamethasone group and anti-oxidants group. Combination of immunosuppressants and antioxidants suppressed more PBMC proliferation except for rapamycin + ALA group, suppressed MMP-9 production except for MPA + ALA group, decreased IL-6 levels and increased MIF levels except for rapamycin + ALA group. TGF-β1 levels were elevated in rapamycin group and rapamycin + ALA group. Conclusions Cytokine production was different depending on combination of drugs.Our results suggest that the different drugs should be selected for treatment according to the phases of corneal chemical burn.

Abstract

The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of parental refractive errors on myopic children in Korean families using a nationally representative survey. We used the ophthalmologic examination dataset of the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys IV and V, a nationwide population-based cross-sectional study using a complex, stratified, multistage, probability cluster survey, which were performed from 2008–2012. We included 3,862 children from 5–18 years of age from 2,344 families without any ocular trauma, surgical history, or cataract affecting refractive errors. The generalized estimating equation was conducted to assess the association of refractive errors among children and their parents. Among 3,862 children, 2,495 had myopia, which was 64.6% prevalence. There were 208 children with high myopia (5.4%). The prevalence rate ratio (PRR) for pediatric myopia and high myopia with myopic parents was 1.34 (95% confidence intervals [CI] 1.24–1.45) and 3.11 (95% CI 1.93–5.01), respectively. The PRR of myopia and high myopia in children significantly increased to 1.37 (95% CI 1.04–1.81) and 11.41 (95% CI 6.24–20.88), as the degree of parental myopia increased (P < 0.001, respectively). Children with two myopic parents were more myopic than those with only one myopic parent (P < 0.001, respectively). In addition to parental myopia, the age of the child and household income were also significant risk factors for all degrees of pediatric myopia in a family (P ≤ 0.005, respectively). Abstract

Background: The purpose of this study was to identify factors related to the unexpected vault in V4c implantable collamer lens (ICL; STAAR Surgical) implantation.Methods: V4c ICLs were implanted in 43 eyes of 43 patients for the correction of myopia. The implanted V4c ICL sizes were determined individually with our previous V4 ICL sizing nomogram based on the sulcus-to-sulcus diameter (STS), and the V4 ICL sizes were then converted to V4c ICL sizes with a size-converting table. We defined the "normal-sizing group" as having a pre-converted ICL size larger than the STS, and the "under-sizing group" as having a pre-converted ICL size smaller than the STS. Refractive outcomes, safety and parameters related to postoperative vault were compared between the two groups.Results: The value of "actual ICL size - STS" differed significantly between the normal-sizing and under-sizing groups (p < 0.001), but postoperative vault did not differ significantly (p = 0.442). The demographics, implanted ICL characteristics, effectiveness indexes, safety indexes, and parameters related to postoperative vault did not differ significantly between the two groups (p > 0.05). Two patients in the normal-sizing group exhibited over-vaulting; these patients had shallow anterior chambers and were implanted with high-dioptric-power ICLs.Conclusions: The achievement of acceptable vault in both normal-sizing and under-sizing groups indicates the existence of a buffering zone in V4c ICL sizing. The smaller size of V4c ICLs should be considered in patients susceptible to over-vaulting, such as those with shallow anterior chambers and high-dioptric-power ICLs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: To evaluate and compare the astigmatism prediction errors taken with the Pentacam measurements, Baylor nomogram, and Barrett formula for toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation.Methods: Phacoemulsification with toric Precizon IOL implantation was performed in 41 eyes with corneal astigmatism (range, 1 to 5 diopters (D)) determined by IOLMaster and SimK on Pentacam. Preoperative corneal astigmatism measurements were obtained from IOLMaster readings (IOLMaster, Baylor-IOLMaster, and Barrett-IOLMaster) and Pentacam readings (SimK, Baylor-SimK, Barrett-SimK, wavefront, true net power, total corneal refractive power, and vector derived by manual vector summation using corneal front and back astigmatism). Prediction error and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) between the measured (or calculated) astigmatism by IOLMaster and Pentacam and the estimated corneal astigmatism estimated by IOL toricity power and residual astigmatism were determined.Results: The centroid errors in prediction error with IOLMaster, SimK, Baylor-IOLMaster, Baylor-SimK, Barrett-IOLMaster, Barrett-SimK, wavefront, true net power, total corneal refractive power, and vector were 0.59@103, 0.61 @103, 0.37@161, 0.41@162, 0.24@171, 0.36@162, 0.42@106, 0.04@8, 0.07@82, and 0.03@82, respectively, in with-the-rule (WTR) astigmatism eyes at postoperative 3-month. They were 0.22@87, 0.20@74, 0.16@21, 0.54@10, 0.43@3, 0.33@19, 0.51@25, 0.31@58, 0.29@50, and 0.14@50 in against-the-rule (ATR) astigmatism eyes. Of the ten modalities, vector showed the lowest WTR astigmatism prediction error and the highest ICC between the predicted and the estimated corneal astigmatism for both WTR and ATR eyes.Conclusion: Vector summation using anterior and posterior corneal surface power taken with the Pentacam yields the least astigmatism prediction error and is a promising tool for determining toric IOL cylinder power. Abstract

A real world reconstruction that generates cyberspace not from a computer graphics tool, but from the real world, has been one of the main issues in two different communities of robotics and computer vision under different names of Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM) and Structure from Motion (SfM). However, there have been few trials that actively integrate SLAM and SfM for possible synergy. This paper shows the real world reconstruction can be enabled through this integration. As a result, the preliminary map has been generated of which five subgoals are: Realistic view (RGB), accurate geometry (depth), applicability to multi-floor indoor building, initial classification of a possible set of objects, and full automation. To this end, an engineering framework of “Acquire-Build-Comprehend (ABC)” is proposed, through which a sensor system acquires an RGB-Depth point cloud from the real world, builds a three-dimensional map, and comprehends this map to yield the possible set of objects.
