Large numbers of microbes can be present in seminal fluid, and there are differences in the semen microbiota between normal and abnormal semen samples. To evaluate the semen microbiota in patients with leukocytospermia, 87 seminal fluid samples, including 33 samples with a normal seminal leukocyte count and 54 samples with leukocytospermia, were obtained for a cross-sectional analysis. Twenty samples with a normal seminal leukocyte count had normal sperm parameters (Control group), and 13 samples with a normal seminal leukocyte count were from asthenozoospermia patients (Ast group). However, 32 samples with leukocytospermia were from asthenozoospermia patients (LA group), and only 22 samples with leukocytospermia had normal sperm parameters (Leu group). The 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequencing method was used to sequence the microbiota in the seminal fluid, and multiple bioinformatics methods were utilized to analyze the data. Finally, the results showed that the worse sperm parameters were observed in the leukocytospermia-related groups. Semen microbiota analysis found that there was increased alpha diversity in the leukocytospermia-related groups. Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes were the primary phyla in the seminal fluid. Two microbiota profiles, namely, Lactobacillus-enriched and Streptococcus-enriched groups, were identified in this study. The majority of the samples in the groups with a normal seminal leukocyte count could be categorized as Lactobacillus-enriched, whereas the majority of the leukocytospermia samples could be categorized as Streptococcus-enriched. Our study indicated that males with leukocytospermia have worse sperm parameters and a different semen microbiota composition compared to males with a normal seminal leukocyte count.

In this work, we investigate that the capping layer (CL) engineering of aluminum oxide (AlOx) on the dopant-free hafnium oxide (HfOx) and the hafnium zirconium oxide (HfZrOx) ferroelectric metal-ferroelectric-metal (MFM) capacitors. The AlOx CL featuring large bandgap and excellent thermal stability offers a stable interface favorable for ferroelectric phase transition. Therefore, the ferroelectric polarization and high-temperature leakage current of HfZrOx MFM capacitor can be largely improved due to the combination of zirconium doping and AlOx capping effect. From the analysis of interface thermodynamic stability and leakage current mechanism, the AlOx CL effectively alleviates interface defect traps between electrode and ferroelectric HfZrOx, which lowers high-temperature leakage current, reduces ferroelectric domains pinning, enhances ferroelectric polarization, and stabilizes the long-term endurance cycling.

Bangong-Nujiang collisional zone (BNCZ) is an older one in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and resulted in the famous Bangong-Nujiang metallogenic belt, which plays an important role in evaluating the formation and uplift mechanism of plateau. The northern and central Lhasa Terrane composed the southern part of the BNCZ. Since ore deposits can be used as markers of geodynamic evolution, the authors carried 1∶50000 stream sedimental geochemical exploration in the Xiongmei area in the Northern Lhasa Terrane to manifest the mineralization, and based on this mineralization with geochemical and chronological characteristics of related magmatic rocks to constrain their geodynamics and connection with the evolution of the Lhasa Terrane. The authors find Early Cretaceous magma mainly resulted in Cu, Mo mineralization, Late Cretaceous magma mainly resulted in Cu, Mo, and W mineralization in the studying area. The results suggest a southward subduction, slab rolling back and break-off, and thickened lithosphere delamination successively occurred within the Northern Lhasa Terrane.© 2022 China Geology Editorial Office.

ObjectivesParasagittal meningioma resection is prone to postoperative complications and tumor recurrence because the tumor invades the superior sagittal sinus. This study aimed to clarify the incidence of perioperative complications and the recurrence of superior sagittal paranasal meningiomas and explored potential predictors in this context.MethodsThe study retrospectively reviewed the clinical, imaging, and follow-up data of parasagittal meningiomas among patients who underwent microsurgical resection in the authors' institution from January 2008 to December 2017. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to explore independent predictors of perioperative complications and tumor recurrence.ResultsA total of 212 parasagittal meningioma patients were included in this study. The incidence of perioperative complications was 23.6% (50/212), and perioperative death occurred in 6 (2.8%) patients. In univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses of perioperative complications, peritumoral edema ≥1 cm (odds ratio [OR] 2.163, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.057–4.428, P = 0.035) and the Sindou invasion Class V-VI(OR0.018, 95% CI 1.248–11.064, P = 0.018) were independent predictors. After an average of 83 (39–154) months of clinical follow up among the living 206 patients, 22 (10.7%) patients showed tumor recurrence. In univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses of tumor recurrence, the Sindou invasion Class III-IV (OR 5.539, 95%CI 1.469–20.884, P = 0.011) and the Sindou invasion Class V-VI (OR 9.144, 95%CI 2.215–37.757, P = 0.002) were independent predictors.ConclusionsPeritumoral edema ≥1 cm and the Sindou invasion Class V-VI were the independent predictors of perioperative complications, and the Sindou invasion Class III-IV and the Sindou invasion Class V-VI were the independent predictors of tumor recurrence. The part of the parasagittal meningioma involving the sinus wall should be actively removed to the largest degree possible to reduce the recurrence rate.

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has seriously increased depression prevalence among the public, including Chinese college students. However, many exercise cannot be performed as usual under the stay-at-home order. This study was a 12-week three-arm randomized controlled trial using the intention-to-treat principle, aiming to explore and compare the feasibility and effect of individual-based personalized aerobic-exercise and resistance-training prescriptions on depressive symptoms in college students, and conclude with some recommendations for individual-based exercise prescriptions.MethodsEighty-six college students with depressive symptoms were randomized into aerobic-exercise (AE), resistance-training (RT), and wait-list control (WLC) groups. Participants in two experimental groups received 12-week personalized AE and RT prescriptions on their individual situations, respectively. No intervention was implemented on participants in the WLC group. Depressive symptoms and physical activity (PA) were measured by Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) and International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF), respectively. All data were collected at the baseline, 4, 8, and 12 weeks, and 4-week post-intervention.ResultsAt 12 weeks, 72.09% of depressive participants improved to “normal.” Participants exhibited a statistical reduction in SDS in all 3 groups (p < 0.05) at 12 weeks compared to baseline. Follow-up assessments showed no significant increase in SDS at 4-week post-intervention compared to 12 weeks (p > 0.05). The independent t-test revealed significantly lower SDS in AE and RT group than in WLC group (pAE < 0.001 and pRT < 0.05) at 4, 8, and 12 weeks, and 4-week post-intervention. Furthermore, the PA of participants (including total PA and intensities) in both experimental groups represented a significant improvement at 4-week post-intervention compared to baseline (p < 0.05), while no differences were observed in the PA of participants in the WLC group (p > 0.05).ConclusionPersonalized exercise prescriptions have good feasibility as they can increase adherence to intervention and reduce serious adverse events. Besides, individual-based personalized aerobic-exercise and resistance-training prescriptions result in a similar effect in relieving depressive symptoms and improving physical activity in college students. The individual-based exercise programs performed in 45- to 60- min with progressive moderate-to-vigorous intensity, 3 times/week for at least 12 weeks, may reduce depressive symptoms in college students during the COVID-19.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to explore possible associations between molecular subtypes and site of distant metastasis in advanced breast cancer (ABC).Methods3577 ABC patients were selected from 21 hospitals of seven geographic regions in China from 2012-2014. A questionnaire was designed to collect medical information regarding demographic characteristics, risk factors, molecular subtype, recurrence/metastasis information, and disease-free survival (DFS). The cancers were classified into Luminal A, Luminal B, HER2-enriched and Triple Negative subtypes. Chi-square test and multivariate Cox proportional hazard models were performed to explore the associations between molecular subtypes and distant metastasis sites.ResultsA total of 2393 cases with molecular subtypes information were finally examined. Patients with Luminal A (51.1%) and Luminal B (44.7%) were most prone to bone metastasis, whereas liver metastasis was more frequently observed in HER2-enriched ABC patients (29.1%).The cumulative recurrence and metastasis rates of ABC patients at 36 months of DFS were the most significant within molecular types, of which Triple Negative was the highest (82.7%), while that of Luminal A was the lowest (58.4%). In the adjusted Cox regression analysis, Luminal B, HER2-enriched and Triple Negative subtypes increased the risk of visceral metastasis by 23%, 46% and 87% respectively. In addition, Triple Negative patients had a higher probability of brain metastasis (HR 3.07, 95% CI: 1.04-9.07).ConclusionMolecular subtypes can predict the preferential sites of distant metastasis, emphasizing that these associations were of great help in choices for surveillance, developing appropriate screening and cancer management strategies for follow-up and personalized therapy in ABC patients.

Supersaturated (Ti,Al)N materials with face centered cubic (fcc) structure offer unique combinations of thermal stability and mechanical properties. However, their thermally-induced decomposition processes are crucial for extracting their full potential. Detailed experimental studies by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy reveal that the formation of the thermodynamically stable wurtzite-type w-AlN starts with 1000 °C at 100 °C lower annealing temperatures (Ta) when applying a multilayer-concept with TiN to form (Ti,Al)N/TiN multilayers. Nevertheless, the hardness of (Ti,Al)N/TiN multilayers peaks with 32.3 ± 1.0 GPa at a 100 °C higher Ta (900 °C) than the (Ti,Al)N coating, and the hardness declining trend with increasing Ta is milder. This is because the (Ti,Al)N decomposes towards a layered structure of Al-rich and Ti-rich regions, when coherently grown with fcc-TiN. Ab initio calculations highlight that Al within the (Ti,Al)N layers preferentially diffuses away from the coherent interface with the TiN layers. Thus, out of one (Ti,Al)N layer more layers form, and even upon the phase-transformation of the Al-rich layers to w-AlN, their layered structure remains. Together, the computational and experimental results suggest that the layered arrangement provides a higher resistance against dislocation glide and is beneficial for the coating integrity.

The docking study on a series of furo[1]benzofuran derivatives with ERα has been demonstrated. The synthesis and characterization of a series of furo[1]benzofuran derivatives were described. All the target compounds were conducted to in vitro for the inhibitory activities against human breast cancer strains T-47D, MCF-7 and toxicity against human liver normal cell strains HL7702 via MTT assay. Most of the target compounds possessed anti-estrogen receptor-dependent breast cancer activities with weak toxicity to healthy cell strains. The preliminary structure–activity relationships were discussed.

In this paper, the corrosion performance of galvanized steel was investigated in a simulated marine environment, under UV irradiation coupling with an alternating wet and dry cycle in a NaCl solution. The surface morphology, composition, and corrosion performance of galvanized steel before and after different alternating wet and dry corrosion under UV irradiation were investigated. The results show that the corrosion current density gradually increases and the corrosion resistance decreases as a function of the alternating wet and dry corrosion cycles. Meanwhile, UV irradiation accelerates the increase in the corrosion current density and the decrease in the corrosion resistance. In addition, the corrosion product ZnO shows a semiconductor property, and the photo-induced electrons and holes produced under UV can participate in the corrosion reaction and promote the formation of loose corrosion products Zn(OH)2, Zn5(OH)8Cl2, and Al2Cl3(OH)5·4H2O, thus accelerating the corrosion of galvanized steel in the atmosphere environment.

Abstract Background This study assessed the performance of visceral adiposity index and body shape index in predicting diabetes mellitus (DM) risk and compared their predictive ability to that of body mass index and waist circumference. Methods Among 8249 consecutive subjects who attended the Nationwide Health Check Up System for Senior Citizens (≥ 65 years) between 2008 and 2018, we examined the associations of several adiposity indices with DM risk and explored gender differences. Results Among all adiposity indicators, Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI) demonstrated the highest discriminatory ability for diabetes mellitus with area under receiver operating characteristic curves (AUC) of 0.65, 0.68, and 0.66 for men, women, and all participants, respectively, and optimal cut-offs set as 126.09 in men and 117.77 in women. Abstract. Background:. Hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) has been demonstrated to influence the keloid recurrence rate after surgery and to relieve keloid symptoms and other pathological processes in keloids. To explore the mechanism of the effect of HBOT on keloids, tumor immune gene expression and immune cell infiltration were studied in this work. Methods:. From February 2021 to April 2021, HBOT was carried out on keloid patients four times before surgery. Keloid tissue samples were collected and divided into an HBOT group (keloid with HBOT before surgery [HK] group, n = 6) and a non-HBOT group (K group, n = 6). Tumor gene expression was analyzed with an Oncomine Immune Response Research Assay kit. Data were mined with R package. The differentially expressed genes between the groups were compared. Hub genes between the groups were determined and verified with Quantitative Real-time PCR. Immune cell infiltration was analyzed based on CIBERSORT deconvolution algorithm analysis of gene expression and verified with immunohistochemistry (IHC). Results:. Inflammatory cell infiltration was reduced in the HK group. There were 178 upregulated genes and 217 downregulated genes. Ten hub genes were identified, including Integrin Subunit Alpha M (ITGAM), interleukin (IL)-4, IL-6, IL-2, Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Receptor Type C (PTPRC), CD86, transforming growth factor (TGF), CD80, CTLA4, and IL-10. CD80, ITGAM, IL-4, and PTPRC with significantly downregulated expression were identified. IL-10 and IL-2 were upregulated in the HK group but without a significant difference. Infiltration differences of CD8 lymphocyte T cells, CD4 lymphocyte T-activated memory cells, and dendritic resting cells were identified with gene CIBERSORT deconvolution algorithm analysis. Infiltration levels of CD4 lymphocyte T cell in the HK group were significantly higher than those of the K group in IHC verification. Conclusion:. HBOT affected tumor gene expression and immune cell infiltration in keloids. CD4 lymphocyte T cell, especially activated memory CD4+T, might be the key regulatory immune cell, and its related gene expression needs further study.

Summary: Persulfate-based nonradical oxidation processes are appealing in water treatment for the efficient and selective degradation of trace contaminants in complex water matrices. However, there is still lacking of systematic understanding of the relationship between multiple nonradical pathways and the active sites of catalyst. Herein, a single-atom Cu catalyst with saturated Cu-N4 sites on a carbon substrate (SA-Cu-NC) was constructed to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS), which exhibited high catalytic performance and selectivity for pollutant degradation in different water conditions. Combined with the results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the electron-rich area around Cu site and the electron-poor area around C site in the saturated Cu-N4 configuration could efficiently adsorb and activate PMS, which promoted pollutant degradation through the oxidation of singlet oxygen (1O2) and electron transfer process, respectively. This study advances the understanding of the saturated coordination structure of metals and the superiority of multiple nonradical pathways in wastewater treatment.

The environmental and epidemiological problems caused by antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes have attracted a lot of attention. The use of electron shuttles based on enhanced extracellular electron transfer for anaerobic biological treatment to remove widespread antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes efficiently from wastewater or organic solid waste is a promising technology. This paper reviewed the development of electron shuttles, described the mechanism of action of different electron shuttles and the application of enhanced anaerobic biotreatment with electron shuttles for the removal of antibiotics and related genes. Finally, we discussed the current issues and possible future directions of electron shuttle technology.

The gut microbiota plays an important role in inflammatory diseases. Metabolites in the three metabolic pathways of tryptophan (Trp), histidine (His), and phenylalanine (Phe) can affect various inflammatory conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, arthritis, colitis, atherosclerosis, and neuroinflammation. We established an LC–MS/MS method to measure 17 metabolites—Trp, 3-indole-acetic acid (Iaa), 3-indole-lactate (Ila), 3-indole-propionic acid (Ipa), 3-indole formaldehyde (Iald), kynurenine (Kn), kynurenic acid (Kyna), 3-Hydroxyanthranilic acid (3-Haa), His, 3-methylhistidine (3-Mhis), histamine (Hist), imidazole propionic acid (Imp), 4-imidazoacetic acid (Imaa), urocanic acid (Ua), Phe, phenylethylamine (Pea), and hippuric acid (Ha)—in the three metabolic pathways. The method exhibited high sensitivity and good selectivity, linearity, accuracy, precision, stability; and recovery rate; all met the requirements of biological sample analysis. By establishing a rheumatoid arthritis (RA) model of Sprague–Dawley rats and performing 16S rRNA sequencing on their feces, it was found that there was dysbiosis, including changes in phylum level, genus level, and α biodiversity of gut bacteria. The contents of the microbiota metabolites Iaa and Ipa in the model group were significantly decreased, and those of Iald, Kn, Kyna, Ha, and Imp were significantly increased. The common therapeutic drugs Tripterygium glycosides, total glucosides of peony, and their main active ingredients were screened by in vitro incubation with gut bacteria: it was found that Tripterygium glycosides and their active ingredients could lead to a variation in metabolites in the Trp and Phe pathways. Total glucosides and active components of peony could lead to a variation in metabolites in the Phe pathway of the gut microbiota.

To determine clinical performance of the single-target SARS-CoV-2 orf 1 ab reverse transcription-insulated isothermal PCR (RT-iiPCR) assay, the positive percentage agreement between this assay and a laboratory real-time RT-PCR assay was 96.8% (30 of 31; 95% confidence interval [CI], 90.5%–100%) and the negative percentage agreement was 97.1% (67 of 69; 95% CI, 93.1%–100%).

The activation of innate antiviral immunity is a promising approach for combatting viral infections. In this study, we screened Chinese herbs that activated human immunity and identified coptisine as a potent inhibitor of the influenza virus with an EC50 of 10.7 μM in MDCK cells. The time of an addition assay revealed that pre-treatment with coptisine was more effective at reducing viral replication than co-treatment or post-treatment. Our bulk RNA-sequencing data showed that coptisine upregulated the p21 signaling pathway in MDCK cells, which was responsible for its antiviral effects. Specifically, coptisine increased the expression of p21 and FOXO1 in a dose-dependent manner while leaving the MELK expression unchanged. Docking analysis revealed that coptisine likely inhibited MELK activity directly by forming hydrogen bonds with ASP-150 and GLU-87 in the catalytic pocket. These findings suggest that coptisine may be a promising antiviral agent that regulates the p21 signaling pathway to inhibit viral replication.

The Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility Phase-II Project is now under construction and it consists of 16 newly built advanced beamlines. The experiments carried out at these new beamlines tend to be characterized by high flux, multi-mode, ultra-fast frequency, in situ and dynamic loading. To meet these emerging experimental demands of SSRF Phase-II beamlines, the authors have developed a unified and extensible data acquisition system based on Bluesky suite. It has been applied at the BL07U Spatial-resolved and Spin-resolved ARPES and magnetism beamline. The experiment results show that with up to 5 channel signals, the system is capable of collecting total electron yield signals of experimental sample and standard sample, and incident photon flux signals simultaneously. It improves the user experimental efficiency and quality. In addition, thanks to Bluesky suite, all devices can be abstracted as motors or detectors and then represented by a Python object. Therefore, with the architecture, modules and interface developed for BL07U, the system can be extended to more beamlines efficiently and easily.

Near space environment is the airspace at 20–100 km, where complex conditions such as low temperature, low pressure, high wind speed, and solar radiation exist. Temperature, as one of the most important meteorological parameters, is crucial for space activities. However, the accuracy of traditional temperature sensors is low, and the influence of complex environments makes the error of conventional temperature measurement methods more extensive. Therefore, we designed a new microbridge temperature sensor to reduce solar radiation and achieve a fast response. Additionally, through simulation analysis, we investigated the three factors influencing the temperature errors of Joule heat, solar radiation heat, and aerodynamic heat. Additionally, the influence of temperature error is reduced by optimizing the installation position of the sensor. The error value in the actual measurement value is removed through the temperature error model to realize the high-accuracy detection of the near space temperature.

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can colonize plant root surfaces or form biofilms to promote plant growth and enhance plant resistance to harsh external environments. However, plant–PGPR interactions, especially chemical signaling molecules, are poorly understood. This study aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of the rhizosphere interaction mechanisms between PGPR and tomato plants. This study found that inoculation with a certain concentration of Pseudomonas stutzeri significantly promoted tomato growth and induced significant changes in tomato root exudates. Furthermore, the root exudates significantly induced NRCB010 growth, swarming motility, and biofilm formation. In addition, the composition of the root exudates was analyzed, and four metabolites (methyl hexadecanoate, methyl stearate, 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol, and n-hexadecanoic acid) significantly related to the chemotaxis and biofilm formation of NRCB010 were screened. Further assessment showed that these metabolites positively affected the growth, swarming motility, chemotaxis, or biofilm formation of strain NRCB010. Among these, n-hexadecanoic acid induced the most remarkable growth, chemotactic response, biofilm formation, and rhizosphere colonization. This study will help develop effective PGPR-based bioformulations to improve PGPR colonization and crop yields.

Background. Keloids are benign fibroproliferative tumors that are unique to humans. However, the exact mechanism of keloid formation remains unclear. The inflammatory cytokines released by immune cells can activate fibroblasts, connective tissue cell proliferation, and angiogenesis. Hypoxia is common in the process of fibrosis in many diseases. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between immune response, hypoxia, and keloid formation. Methods. Gene methylation and expression data were downloaded from the GEO database. Thereafter, differentially methylated genes associated with immunity and hypoxia were identified. Machine learning was performed to identify potential diagnostic/immunity/hypoxia‐related differentially methylated/expressed genes, followed by analysis of functional enrichment, transcription factors, protein‐protein interactions, and expression validation by reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry. Results. In total, 16 immunity/hypoxia‐related hypermethylated low‐expression genes and 18 immunity/hypoxia‐related hypomethylated high‐expression genes were identified in keloids. Based on machine learning, nine differentially methylated and expressed genes were selected as potential diagnostic markers for keloids, including two hypoxia‐related genes (CDKN1A and PGAM2) and seven immunity‐related genes (DCD, PTGDS, WFIKKN1, SEMA5A, IL1R1, ITGAL, and SOS1). Some significantly enriched signaling pathways were identified, including the FoxO, PI3K‐Akt, focal adhesion, and ErbB signaling pathways. SOS1 is involved in disease regulation with 65 transcription factors and has a higher interaction score with other molecules. Conclusions. Two hypoxia‐related genes (CDKN1A and PGAM2) and seven immunity‐related genes (DCD, PTGDS, WFIKKN1, SEMA5A, IL1R1, ITGAL, and SOS1) could be considered potential diagnostic markers for keloids, and may be helpful in understanding the importance of oxygen balance and immune regulation in keloids. Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) induces a complex sequence of apoptotic cascades and inflammatory responses, leading to neurological impairment. Transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1), a nonselective cation channel with high calcium permeability, has been implicated in neuronal apoptosis and inflammatory responses. This study used a mouse ICH model and neuronal cultures to examine whether TRPV1 activation exacerbates brain damage and neurological deficits by promoting neuronal apoptosis and neuroinflammation. ICH was induced by injecting collagenase in both wild‐type (WT) C57BL/6 mice and TRPV1−/− mice. Capsaicin (CAP; a TRPV1 agonist) or capsazepine (a TRPV1 antagonist) was administered by intracerebroventricular injection 30 min before ICH induction in WT mice. The effects of genetic deletion or pharmacological inhibition of TRPV1 using CAP or capsazepine on motor deficits, histological damage, apoptotic responses, blood–brain barrier (BBB) permeability, and neuroinflammatory reactions were explored. The antiapoptotic mechanisms and calcium influx induced by TRPV1 inactivation were investigated in cultured hemin‐stimulated neurons. TRPV1 expression was upregulated in the hemorrhagic brain, and TRPV1 was expressed in neurons, microglia, and astrocytes after ICH. Genetic deletion of TRPV1 significantly attenuated motor deficits and brain atrophy for up to 28 days. Deletion of TRPV1 also reduced brain damage, neurodegeneration, microglial activation, cytokine expression, and cell apoptosis at 1 day post‐ICH. Similarly, the administration of CAP ameliorated brain damage, neurodegeneration, brain edema, BBB permeability, and cytokine expression at 1 day post‐ICH. In primary neuronal cultures, pharmacological inactivation of TRPV1 by CAP attenuated neuronal vulnerability to hemin‐induced injury, suppressed apoptosis, and preserved mitochondrial integrity in vitro. Mechanistically, CAP reduced hemin‐stimulated calcium influx and prevented the phosphorylation of CaMKII in cultured neurons, which was associated with reduced activation of P38 and c‐Jun NH2‐terminal kinase mitogen‐activated protein kinase signaling. Our results suggest that TRPV1 inhibition may be a potential therapy for ICH by suppressing mitochondria‐related neuronal apoptosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background There is on one hand sufficient evidence showing strong association between resilience and self-rated successful aging. On the other hand, strength training could contribute the cultivation of resilience among older adults. Therefore, the current study aims to examine the effectiveness of resistance training on resilience among Chinese older adults in Hong Kong. Methods This study will apply a three-group, double blinded (outcome assessors and data analysts), randomized controlled trial (RCT) to examine the effectiveness of the interventions on resilience, functional fitness, and health related quality of life immediately after a 16-week intervention, as well as the residual effects 12 weeks after completion of the interventions. Discussion It is expected that resistance training is promising or even superior to aerobic training in the improvement of resilience. Given the limited evidence on the literature, it is urgently needed to explore the effects of resistance training on the improvement of resilience in older adults. Findings of the current study can contribute to the development of effective resistant training programs for the promotion of resilience among older adults. Despite the recognized importance of grammar knowledge to the reading comprehension of EFL learners, research findings on the relationships among grammar knowledge, vocabulary, and reading comprehension are inconclusive. Attention needs to be paid to issues such as the distinct roles of the two grammar knowledge components of form and meaning, and the direct and mediating roles of vocabulary in EFL reading comprehension. This study recruited 1,149 sixth graders as research participants to evaluate these issues. The measurement tools were standardized EFL competence tests for vocabulary size, grammar forms and meanings, and reading comprehension. Structural equation modeling (SEM) regression models indicated that vocabulary played a more-significant role in reading comprehension than grammar knowledge; moreover, the effects of grammar knowledge were reduced but still significant when grammar meanings were excluded. The SEM mediating model of this study also indicated that grammar knowledge not only exerted a direct effect on reading comprehension but also indirectly influenced reading comprehension via vocabulary.

BackgroundMyopia is one of the most common eye diseases in school-aged children. Multifocal lens (MFL) is one of the interventions that has being widely applied to control the progress of myopia. However, the treatment effects of MFLs in school-aged children require to be systematically evaluated.MethodsA systematic analysis on qualified randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in which MFLs were prescribed as the intervention and single-vision lenses (SVLs) as the control was conducted. The treatment effects referring to the mean differences in spherical equivalent refraction (SER) and axial length (AL) between MFLs and SVLs groups were analyzed.ResultsWith annual visit (3-years follow-up), the weighted mean differences (WMDs) in SER between MFLs and SVLs were 0.29 D (95% CI, 0.21 ∼ 0.37, p < 0.00001), 0.46 D (95% CI, 0.32 ∼ 0.60, p < 0.00001), and 0.64 D (95% CI, 0.40 ∼ 0.88, p < 0.00001) at the first, second, and third year; in AL were −0.12 mm (95% CI, −0.14 ∼−0.11, p < 0.00001), −0.19 mm (95% CI, −0.22 ∼−0.16, p < 0.00001), and −0.26 mm (95% CI, −0.31 ∼−0.21, p < 0.00001) at the first, second, and third year. With 6-months interval trials (2-years follow-up), the WMDs in SER from MFLs were 0.14 D (95% CI, 0.08 ∼ 0.20, p < 0.0001), 0.19 D (95% CI, 0.11 ∼ 0.28, p < 0.0001), 0.24 D (95% CI, 0.16 ∼ 0.33, p < 0.0001), 0.31 D (95% CI, 0.18 ∼ 0.44, p < 0.0001) and in AL from MFLs were −0.08 mm (95% CI, −0.09 ∼−0.07, p < 0.00001), −0.10 mm (95% CI, −0.12 ∼−0.09, p < 0.00001), −0.14 mm (95% CI, −0.17 ∼−0.11, p < 0.00001), and −0.18 mm (95% CI, −0.22 ∼−0.14, p < 0.00001) slower comparing with SVLs at follow up of 6, 12, 18, and 24 months, respectively.ConclusionThe treatment effects of MFLs to slow down the myopic progress are positive in both 6-months and annual-visit trials and which could be sustained till 36 months. While a slight weaker treatment effect was observed after the first visit in 6-months visit, a slight rebound was observed at the following visit points. Furthermore, the treatment effects in annual visit are more profound than 6-months visit at almost all stages especially in SER. Our analysis encourages the MFLs users to maintain a long-term treatment with annual visit.

This research project was to develop a safe and efficient method for disposal of HCDS liquid in large quantities. The proposed method is a two-stage process which includes direct hydrolysis of HCDS liquid in water, followed by alkaline cleavage of the hydrolyzed product in aqueous suspension by an aqueous potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution. In the first stage, HCDS liquid was directly hydrolyzed in water. The required ratio of HCDS to water was 1:25 by weight. During the hydrolysis, the reaction was mild and took place without significant fuming. There was a new peak at 915 cm-1 observed only in the IR spectrum of the liquid HCDS hydrolyzed deposit hydrolyzed in water that may be attributed to the existence of small silicon-oxide molecules in the cluster. It was determined that, unlike other hydrolyzed deposits formed in moist air, the liquid HCDS hydrolyzed deposit formed in water was readily reactive to alkaline solution at ambient conditions with a concurrent release of hydrogen gas. In the second stage, aqueous KOH solution (20 wt%) was then added to neutralize the suspended solution. The required weight ratio of KOH to HCDS was 2:1 to get a final pH of about 12.6.
