151. Large language models converge toward human-like concept organization

Abstract

Large language models show human-like performance in knowledge extraction, reasoning and dialogue, but it remains controversial whether this performance is best explained by memorization and pattern matching, or whether it reflects human-like inferential semantics and world knowledge. Knowledge bases such as WikiData provide large-scale, high-quality representations of inferential semantics and world knowledge. We show that large language models learn to organize concepts in ways that are strikingly similar to how concepts are organized in such knowledge bases. Knowledge bases model collective, institutional knowledge, and large language models seem to induce such knowledge from raw text. We show that bigger and better models exhibit more human-like concept organization, across four families of language models and three knowledge graph embeddings.

Abstract

This article is about finding the limit set for banded Toeplitz matrices. Our main result is a new approach to approximate the limit set $\Lambda(b)$ where $b$ is the symbol of the banded Toeplitz matrix. The new approach is geometrical and based on the formula $\Lambda(b) = \cap_{\rho \in (0, \infty)} \text{sp } T(b_\rho)$, where $\rho$ is a scaling factor, i.e. $b_\rho(t) := b(\rho t)$, and $\text{sp }(\cdot)$ denotes the spectrum. We show that the full intersection can be approximated by the intersection for a finite number of $\rho$'s, and that the intersection of polygon approximations for $\text{sp } T(b_\rho)$ yields an approximating polygon for $\Lambda(b)$ that converges to $\Lambda(b)$ in the Hausdorff metric. Further, we show that one can slightly expand the polygon approximations for $\text{sp } T(b_\rho)$ to ensure that they contain $\text{sp } T(b_\rho)$. Then, taking the intersection yields an approximating superset of $\Lambda(b)$ which converges to $\Lambda(b)$ in the Hausdorff metric, and is guaranteed to contain $\Lambda(b)$. Combining the established algebraic (root-finding) method with our approximating superset, we are able to give an explicit bound on the Hausdorff distance to the true limit set. We implement the algorithm in Python and test it. It performs on par to and better in some cases than existing algorithms. We argue, but do not prove, that the average time complexity of the algorithm is $O(n^2 + mn\log m)$, where $n$ is the number of $\rho$'s and $m$ is the number of vertices for the polygons approximating $\text{sp } T(b_\rho)$. Further, we argue that the distance from $\Lambda(b)$ to both the approximating polygon and the approximating superset decreases as $O(1/\sqrt{k})$ for most of $\Lambda(b)$, where $k$ is the number of elementary operations required by the algorithm., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures. Abstract

We report the discovery of two exoplanets orbiting around HD 212729 (TOI\,1052, TIC 317060587), a $T_{\rm eff}=6146$K star with V=9.51 observed by TESS in Sectors 1 and 13. One exoplanet, TOI-1052b, is Neptune-mass and transits the star, and an additional planet TOI-1052c is observed in radial velocities but not seen to transit. We confirm the planetary nature of TOI-1052b using precise radial velocity observations from HARPS and determined its parameters in a joint RV and photometry analysis. TOI-1052b has a radius of $2.87^{+0.29}_{-0.24}$ R$_{\oplus}$, a mass of $16.9\pm 1.7$ M$_{\oplus}$, and an orbital period of 9.14 days. TOI-1052c does not show any transits in the TESS data, and has a minimum mass of $34.3^{+4.1}_{-3.7}$ M$_{\oplus}$ and an orbital period of 35.8 days, placing it just interior to the 4:1 mean motion resonance. Both planets are best fit by relatively high but only marginally significant eccentricities of $0.18^{+0.09}_{-0.07}$ for planet b and $0.24^{+0.09}_{-0.08}$ for planet c. We perform a dynamical analysis and internal structure model of the planets as well as deriving stellar parameters and chemical abundances. The mean density of TOI-1052b is $3.9^{+1.7}_{-1.3}$ g cm$^{-3}$ consistent with an internal structure similar to Neptune. A nearby star is observed in Gaia DR3 with the same distance and proper motion as TOI-1052, at a sky projected separation of ~1500AU, making this a potential wide binary star system., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS. 11 pages

Abstract

This paper investigates a common rail cylinder lubrication system for large two-stroke marine diesel engines using electronically controlled injectors. The system is studied using the Bosch rate of injection measurement technique The common rail injector has a buildup of mass flow of approximately 1 ms as the injector opens until the nozzle is choked from cavitation. Using a highly viscous fluid, the Bosch rate of injection method is able to predict the injected amount with an error of 5% or lower for nearly the entire tested delivery range of 2 mg to 21 mg. Lubrication of cylinder liners and piston rings is a crucial parameter in operating a two-stoke marine diesel engine efficiently. Both over and under lubrication is harmful for the engine, so the ability to accurately dose the cylinder oil is very important. A mass flow build up time of 1 ms promises high accuracy of dosage even down to 2.5 mg per injection. Abstract

We report on multiwavelength target-of-opportunity observations of the blazar PKS 0735+178, located 2.2$^\circ$ away from the best-fit position of the IceCube neutrino event IceCube-211208A detected on December 8, 2021. The source was in a high-flux state in the optical, ultraviolet, X-ray, and GeV gamma-ray bands around the time of the neutrino event, exhibiting daily variability in the soft X-ray flux. The X-ray data from Swift-XRT and NuSTAR characterize the transition between the low-energy and high-energy components of the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED), and the gamma-ray data from Fermi -LAT, VERITAS, and H.E.S.S. require a spectral cut-off near 100 GeV. Both X-ray and gamma-ray measurements provide strong constraints on the leptonic and hadronic models. We analytically explore a synchrotron self-Compton model, an external Compton model, and a lepto-hadronic model. Models that are entirely based on internal photon fields face serious difficulties in matching the observed SED. The existence of an external photon field in the source would instead explain the observed gamma-ray spectral cut-off in both leptonic and lepto-hadronic models and allow a proton jet power that marginally agrees with the Eddington limit in the lepto-hadronic model. We show a numerical lepto-hadronic model with external target photons that reproduces the observed SED and is reasonably consistent with the neutrino event despite requiring a high jet power., Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures, accepted by ApJ

Abstract

HIP 9618 (HD 12572, TOI-1471, TIC 306263608) is a bright ($G=9.0$ mag) solar analogue. TESS photometry revealed the star to have two candidate planets with radii of $3.9 \pm 0.044$ $R_\oplus$ (HIP 9618 b) and $3.343 \pm 0.039$ $R_\oplus$ (HIP 9618 c). While the 20.77291 day period of HIP 9618 b was measured unambiguously, HIP 9618 c showed only two transits separated by a 680-day gap in the time series, leaving many possibilities for the period. To solve this issue, CHEOPS performed targeted photometry of period aliases to attempt to recover the true period of planet c, and successfully determined the true period to be 52.56349 d. High-resolution spectroscopy with HARPS-N, SOPHIE and CAFE revealed a mass of $10.0 \pm 3.1 M_\oplus$ for HIP 9618 b, which, according to our interior structure models, corresponds to a $6.8\pm1.4\%$ gas fraction. HIP 9618 c appears to have a lower mass than HIP 9618 b, with a 3-sigma upper limit of $< 18M_\oplus$. Follow-up and archival RV measurements also reveal a clear long-term trend which, when combined with imaging and astrometric information, reveal a low-mass companion ($0.08^{+0.12}_{-0.05} M_\odot$) orbiting at $26^{+19}_{-11}$ au. This detection makes HIP 9618 one of only five bright ($K<8$ mag) transiting multi-planet systems known to host a planet with $P>50$ d, opening the door for the atmospheric characterisation of warm ($T_{\rm eq}<750$ K) sub-Neptunes., Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures, 9 tables. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) is associated with high levels of cysteinyl leukotrienes, prostaglandin D2, and low levels of prostaglandin E2. Further, 15-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (15-HETE) levels may have predictive value in therapeutic outcomes of aspirin desensitization. Accumulation of nasal group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) has been demonstrated during COX-1 inhibition in AERD, although the relationships between tissue ILC2 accumulation, reaction symptom severity, and novel lipid biomarkers are unknown. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine whether novel lipid mediators are predictive of nasal ILC2 accumulation and symptom scores during COX-1 inhibitor challenge in patients with AERD. METHODS: Blood and nasal scraping samples from patients with AERD were collected at baseline and COX-1 inhibitor reaction and then processed for flow cytometry for nasal ILC2s and serum for lipidomic analysis. RESULTS: Eight patients with AERD who were undergoing aspirin desensitization were recruited. Of the 161 eicosanoids tested, 42 serum mediators were detected. Baseline levels of 15-HETE were negatively correlated with the change in numbers of airway ILC2s (r = -0.6667; P = .0428). Docosahexaenoic acid epoxygenase metabolite 19,20-dihydroxy-4Z,7Z,10Z,13Z,16Z-docosapentaenoic acid (19,20-diHDPA) was positively correlated with both changes in airway ILC2s (r = 0.7143; P = .0305) and clinical symptom scores (r = 0.5000; P = .0081). CONCLUSION: Low levels of baseline 15-HETE predicted a greater accumulation of airway ILC2s in patients with AERD who were receiving COX-1 inhibition. Further, increases in the cytochrome P pathway metabolite 19,20-dihydroxy-4Z,7Z,10Z,13Z,16Z-docosapentaenoic acid (19,20-diHDPA) were associated with increased symptoms and nasal ILC2 accumulation. Future studies to assess how these mediators might control ILC2s may improve the understanding of AERD pathogenesis.

158. Validation of a Low-Cost Portable Device for Inducing Noninvasive Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury in Mice.

Abstract

Noninvasive compression-induced anterior cruciate ligament rupture (ACL-R) is an easy and reproducible model for studying post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) in mice. However, equipment typically used for ACL-R is expensive, immobile, and not available to all researchers. In this study, we compared PTOA progression in mice injured with a low-cost custom ACL-rupture device (CARD) to mice injured with a standard system (ElectroForce 3200). We quantified anterior-posterior (AP) joint laxity immediately following injury, epiphyseal trabecular bone microstructure, and osteophyte volume at 2 and 6 weeks post injury using micro-computed tomography, and osteoarthritis progression and synovitis at 2 and 6 weeks post injury using whole-joint histology. We observed no significant differences in outcomes in mice injured with the CARD system compared to mice injured with the Electroforce (ELF) system. However, AP joint laxity data and week 2 micro-CT and histology outcomes suggested that injuries may have been slightly more severe and PTOA progressed slightly faster in mice injured with the CARD system compared to the ELF system. Altogether, these data confirm that ACL-R can be successfully and reproducibly performed with the CARD system and that osteoarthritis (OA) progression is mostly comparable to that of mice injured with the ELF system, though potentially slightly faster. The CARD system is low cost and portable, and we are making the plans and instructions freely available to all interested investigators in the hopes that they will find this system useful for their studies of OA in mice.

Abstract

Traumatic joint injuries such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture or meniscus tears commonly lead to post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) within 10-20 years following injury. Understanding the early biological processes initiated by joint injuries (e.g., inflammation, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), cathepsin proteases, bone resorption) is crucial for understanding the etiology of PTOA. However, there are few options for in vivo measurement of these biological processes, and the early biological responses may be confounded if invasive surgical techniques or injections are used to initiate OA. In our studies of PTOA, we have used commercially available near-infrared protease activatable probes combined with fluorescence reflectance imaging (FRI) to quantify protease activity in vivo following non-invasive compression-induced ACL injury in mice. This non-invasive ACL injury method closely recapitulates clinically relevant injury conditions and is completely aseptic since it does not involve disrupting the skin or the joint capsule. The combination of these injury and imaging methods allows us to study the time course of protease activity at multiple time points following a traumatic joint injury.

Abstract

The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and has infected more than 650 million people worldwide. Approximately 23% of these patients developed lasting long-haul COVID symptoms, including fatigue, joint pain, and systemic hyperinflammation. However, the direct clinical impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the skeletal system including bone and joint health has not been determined. Utilizing a humanized mouse model of COVID-19, this study provides the first direct evidence that SARS-CoV-2 infection leads to acute bone loss, increased osteoclast number, and thinner growth plates. This bone loss could decrease whole-bone mechanical strength and increase the risk of fragility fractures, particularly in older patients, while thinner growth plates may create growth disturbances in younger patients. Evaluating skeletal health in patients that have recovered from COVID-19 will be crucial to identify at-risk populations and develop effective countermeasures.
