The reactions of several fused polycyclic arenes with (C5Me5)Rh(PMe3)(Ph)H and (C5H5)Rh(PMe3)-(Ph)H, and the thermodynamic preferences for eta2-arene coordination versus C-H bond stimulation have been examined. Phenathrene, anthracene, 2-methoxynaphthalene, 2,6-dimethyoxynaphthalene, pyrene, and fluoranthene yield only eta2-complexes, while equlibrium mixtures of C-H activation and eta2-complexes result from naphthalane, perylene and triphenylene.

Objective Despite recent federal recommendations calling for increased funding for early childhood mental health consultation (ECMHC) as a means to decrease preschool expulsions, no randomized-controlled evaluations of this form of intervention have been reported in the scientific literature. This study is the first attempt to isolate the effects of ECMHC for enhancing classroom quality, decreasing teacher-rated behavior problems, and decreasing the likelihood of expulsion in targeted children in early childhood classrooms. Method The sample consisted of 176 target children (3–4 years old) and 88 preschool classrooms and teachers randomly assigned to receive ECMHC through Connecticut's statewide Early Childhood Consultation Partnership (ECCP) or waitlist control treatment. Before randomization, teachers selected 2 target children in each classroom whose behaviors most prompted the request for ECCP. Evaluation measurements were collected before and after treatment, and child behavior and social skills and overall quality of the childcare environment were assessed. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to evaluate the effectiveness of ECCP and to account for the nested structure of the study design. Results Children who received ECCP had significantly lower ratings of hyperactivity, restlessness, externalizing behaviors, problem behaviors, and total problems compared with children in the control group even after controlling for gender and pretest scores. No effects were found on likelihood of expulsion and quality of childcare environment. Conclusion ECCP resulted in significant decreases across several domains of teacher-rated externalizing and problem behaviors and is a viable and potentially cost-effective means for infusing mental health services into early childhood settings. Clinical and policy implications for ECMHC are discussed.

A study is made on the mechanism of the C-C bond formation in the ring opening and coupling of thiophene by (C5Me5)Rh(C2H4)2. The insertion of a rhodium complex into the C-S bond of thiophene is investigated. The results indicate that this insertion is quite general and can facilitate the formation of a C-C bond by a new route. Dimer formation through the bridging of sulfur atoms can also induce juxtaposition of two metal carbon bonds with p orbitals properly oriented for C-C bond formation.

Background The United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals encompass lifelong learning from birth to youth to adulthood (Goal 4) and economic opportunities for young people (Goal 8). The targets include improving access to quality early childhood care and education (ECCE) as well as learning and training opportunities for adolescents and youth. Cross-generational models for young children and youth may offer opportunities to address the interconnections between goals and targets for the next generation. We investigated whether an ECCE programme for young children (3.5–6.5 years) delivered by female youth (18–24 years) in rural Pakistan would be effective on children’s school readiness. Methods In partnership with the National Commission for Human Development in Pakistan, we implemented the ‘Youth Leaders for Early Childhood Assuring Children are Prepared for School’ (LEAPS) programme to train female youth to deliver ECCE. The effectiveness of the LEAPS programme on children’s school readiness was evaluated in a cluster-randomised controlled trial. We randomly allocated five clusters (villages) to receive the intervention (n = 170 children) and five clusters to control (n = 170 children). Children’s school readiness was assessed after nine months of intervention exposure using the International Development and Early Learning Assessment tool. Analyses was by intention-to-treat. The trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT02645162. Findings At endline, the intervention group had significantly higher school readiness scores (n = 166, mean percentage score 59.4, 95% CI 52.7 to 66.2) compared with the control group (n = 168, mean percentage score 45.5, 95% CI 38.8 to 52.3). The effect size (Cohen’s d) was 0.3. Conclusion Trained female youth delivered an ECCE programme that was effective in benefitting young children’s school readiness. The cross-generational model is a promising approach to support early child development; however, further evaluation of the model is needed to assess the specific benefits to youth including their skills and economic development.

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: Head and neck (H&N) squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a significant contributor to worldwide mortality and morbidity. Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been linked with H&N cancer and HPV-positive H&N SCC have been shown to have better survival outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of human papillomavirus (HPV) on laryngeal carcinoma (LSCC) survival outcomes and prognosis. METHOD: A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. LSCC was confirmed based on histopathology, and HPV status was confirmed by either polymerase chain reaction, immunohistochemistry, and/or in-situ hybridization. RESULTS: There were 1214 studies which were identified, of which 14 studies were eligible for our review. A total of 2,578 cases of LSCC were included in analysis with 413 (16.0%) HPV-positive. Overall survival (OS) was not significant for HPV-positive LSCC in first five years (year one: OR 1.44 p=0.13; year two: OR 1.24 p=0.30; year three: OR 1.01 p=0.97; year four: OR 1.13 p=0.63; year five: OR 1.01 p=0.98). Disease-free survival (DFS) was similarly not significant for HPV-positive LSCC (year one: OR 1.08 p=0.68; year two: OR 1.22, p=0.31; year three: OR 1.13, p=0.69; year four: OR 0.93, p=0.80 and year five: OR 1.42, p=0.30). When studies are sub-divided into global regions, Chinese studies had better HPV-positive survival compared to North American studies in year five (OR 1.84 vs OR 0.46, p=0.04). CONCLUSION: This is the first study of its kind to evaluate the survival impact of HPV-positive LSCC patients. Unlike oropharyngeal cancer, HPV status does not make a difference to OS or DFS in LSCC. This supports data that HPV is not a prognostic factor in squamous carcinoma of the larynx.

- Abstract
Many industrial domains are characterized by Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems for which an explicit relationship capturing the nontrivial trade-off between the competing objectives is not available. Human experts have the ability to implicitly learn such a relationship, which in turn enables them to tune the corresponding controller to achieve the desirable closed-loop performance. However, as the complexity of the MIMO system and/or the controller increase, so does the tuning time and the associated tuning cost. To reduce the tuning cost, a framework is proposed in which a machine learning method for approximating the human-learned cost function along with an optimization algorithm for optimizing it, and consequently tuning the controller, are employed. In this work the focus is on the tuning of Model Predictive Controllers (MPCs), given both the interest in their implementations across many industrial domains and the associated high degrees of freedom present in the corresponding tuning process. To demonstrate the proposed approach, simulation results for the tuning of an air path MPC controller in a diesel engine are presented.

- Abstract
In preference learning, it is beneficial to incorporate monotonicity constraints for learning utility functions when there is prior knowledge of monotonicity. We present a novel method for learning utility functions with monotonicity constraints using Gaussian process regression. Data is provided in the form of pairwise comparisons between items. Using conditions on monotonicity for the predictive function, an algorithm is proposed which uses the weighted average between prior linear and maximum a posteriori (MAP) utility estimates. This algorithm is formally shown to guarantee monotonicity of the learned utility function in the dimensions desired. The algorithm is tested in a Monte Carlo simulation case study, in which the results suggest that the learned utility by the proposed algorithm performs better in prediction than the standalone linear estimate, and enforces monotonicity unlike the MAP estimate.

- Abstract
In this study, we use temperature-dependent microphotoluminescence spectroscopy to investigate non-uniform bulk defects in -type Czochralski and float-zone silicon wafers. For both wafer types, we observe defect photoluminescence (PL) with peak energy between 0.78 eV and 0.85 eV emerge as the temperature is decreased from 300 K to 80 K, along with an associated 10-100 times reduction in the band-to-band (BB) PL. This similarity in the shape of the spectral PL between the two wafer types suggests that the origin of the defects may be related. For the float-zone wafers, the defect PL is present even in regions appearing bright in conventional band-to-band PL imaging, suggesting that the bulk defect exists across the entire wafer, but is spatially inhomogeneous. Defect parameters are extracted by fitting the ratio of the integrated defect to band-to-band PL ratio using a modified Arrhenius equation derived from the ShockleyRead-Hall defect theory. We determine similar defect parameters for the FZ wafer within the bright and dark regions: A single defect species located at 150 to 160 meV from the valence band-edge and a capture cross-section temperature-dependence following an inverse power law with exponent of approximately 2. For the Cz wafer the defect is located 325 meV from the valence band-edge, as expected from the peak PL position, and a capture cross-section temperature exponent of approximately 2.5 was determined. This suggests that a different recombination process is responsible for the same defect PL band in each wafer type

- Abstract
Aim Previous studies reported conflicting evidence on the effects of obesity on outcomes after gastrointestinal surgery. The aims of this study were to explore the relationship of obesity with major postoperative complications in an international cohort and to present a metaanalysis of all available prospective data. Methods This prospective, multicentre study included adults undergoing both elective and emergency gastrointestinal resection, reversal of stoma or formation of stoma. The primary end-point was 30-day major complications (Clavien–Dindo Grades III–V). A systematic search was undertaken for studies assessing the relationship between obesity and major complications after gastrointestinal surgery. Individual patient meta-analysis was used to analyse pooled results. Results This study included 2519 patients across 127 centres, of whom 560 (22.2%) were obese. Unadjusted major complication rates were lower in obese vs normal weight patients (13.0% vs 16.2%, respectively), but this did not reach statistical significance (P = 0.863) on multivariate analysis for patients having surgery for either malignant or benign conditions. Individual patient meta-analysis demonstrated that obese patients undergoing surgery formalignancy were at increased risk of major complications (OR 2.10, 95% CI 1.49–2.96, P < 0.001), whereas obese patients undergoing surgery for benign indications were at decreased risk (OR 0.59, 95% CI 0.46–0.75, P < 0.001) compared to normal weight patients. Conclusions In our international data, obesity was not found to be associated with major complications following gastrointestinal surgery. Meta-analysis of available prospective data made a novel finding of obesity being associated with different outcomes depending on whether patients were undergoing surgery for benign or malignant disease.

- Abstract
Two dimensional (2D) Transition Metal dichalcogenides have gained immense research attention in the recent years due to their superior opto-electronic properties and promising prospects in photonics and photovoltaic technologies. In this work, 2D Molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) nanoflakes were incorporated as hole transport layers (HTLs) in inverted (p-i-n) perovskite solar cells (PSCs). MoS2 nanoflakes were blended within the PEDOT:PSS layer together forming a hybrid HTL layer. The modified devices exhibited significant improvement in power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability simultaneously. Compared to the control device, the efficiency enhancement of MoS2 incorporated devices was around 18.5%. The MoS2 nanoflake has improved the efficient charge extraction across the HTL layer reducing recombination at the interfaces, with a significantly lower electrode polarization and hysteresis. Impedance Spectroscopy (IS) analysis revealed that the MoS2 blended PEDOT:PSS HTL increased the recombination resistance by 50%. The modified HTL based devices also exhibited high device stability retaining more than 95% of the initial PCE even after 4 weeks.

- Abstract
This paper presents the experimental validation of 3D Fourier method employed for predicting magnet eddy current loss in surface mounted permanent magnet (SPM) machines. The magnet loss is measured for a 12-slot,14-pole SPM machine from experimental tests when the machine is operated with inverter under locked rotor conditions by repeating tests with two rotors, one with magnets and one without. The eddy current loss associated with each significant harmonic in the captured armature currents is predicted separately employing the developed method and the total magnet loss is evaluated by applying the principle of superposition. The magnet loss at real operating conditions of the machine is predicted from the method using the phase current captured when the SPM is operating at its maximum speed conditions. The result is used as example to devise an effective means of further reduction in the total magnet loss.

Numerical Analysis - Abstract
A preliminary report is presented on the work on the tracking of internal layers in a singularly-perturbed convection-diffusion equation. It is shown why such tracking may be desirable, and it is also shown how to do it using domain decomposition based on asymptotic analysis.

- Abstract
This paper proposes a computationally efficient method, for accurate prediction of 3-dimensional (3D) high frequency eddy current loss in the rotor magnets of surface mounted permanent magnet machines employing the imaging method. 2D finite element analysis (FEA) is used to generate the information on radial and tangential 2D magnetic field variations (eddy current sources) within the magnet. The diffusion of eddy current sources along the axial plane of the magnet computed analytically is incorporated in the imaging method to establish the 3D eddy current source variations within the magnet. The modified method is validated with results from 3D time-stepped finite element analysis (FEA) for an 8-pole, 18-slot permanent magnet machine, evaluating its magnet loss considering axial and circumferential segmentation.
