Search

Superluminal motion is a common feature of radio jets in powerful gamma-ray emitting active galactic nuclei. Conventionally, the variable emission is assumed to originate near the central supermassive black-hole where the jet is launched on parsec scales or smaller. Here, we report the discovery of superluminal radio features within a distinct flaring X-ray emitting region in the jet of the nearby radio galaxy M87 with the Very Long Baseline Array. This shows that these two phenomenological hallmarks -- superluminal motion and high-energy variability -- are associated, and we place this activity much further (>=120 pc) from the ``central engine'' in M87 than previously thought in relativistic jet sources. We argue that the recent excess very high-energy TeV emission from M87 reported by the H.E.S.S. experiment originates from this variable superluminal structure, thus providing crucial insight into the production region of gamma-ray emission in more distant blazars., Comment: ApJL, accepted. The extended lobes of radio galaxies are examined as sources of X-ray and gamma-ray emission via inverse Compton scattering of 3K background photons. The Compton spectra of two exemplary examples, Fornax A and Centaurus A, are estimated using available radio measurements in the ~10's MHz - 10's GHz range. For average lobe magnetic fields of >~0.3-1 micro-G, the lobe spectra are predicted to extend into the soft gamma-rays making them likely detectable with the GLAST LAT. If detected, their large angular extents (~1 deg and 8 deg) will make it possible to ``image'' the radio lobes in gamma-rays. Similarly, this process operates in more distant radio galaxies and the possibility that such systems will be detected as unresolved gamma-ray sources with GLAST is briefly considered., Comment: 3 pages, one 3 panel figure. We present new Chandra and HST data for four gamma-ray blazars selected on the basis of radio morphology with the aim of revealing X-ray and optical emission from their jets at large scales. All the sources have been detected. Spectral Energy Distributions of the large scale jets are obtained as well as new X-ray spectra for the blazar cores. Modeling for each object the core (sub-pc scale) and large-scale (>100 kpc) jet SEDs, we derive the properties of the same jet at the two scales. The comparison of speeds and powers at different scales supports a simple scenario for the dynamics and propagation of high power relativistic jets., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present Spitzer IRAC imaging of the large-scale jet in the quasar PKS 1136-135 at wavelengths of 3.6 and 5.8 um, combined with previous VLA, HST, and Chandra observations. We clearly detect infrared emission from the jet, resulting in the most detailed multifrequency data among the jets in lobe-dominated quasars. The spectral energy distributions of the jet knots have significant variations along the jet, like the archetypal jet in 3C 273. The infrared measurements with IRAC are consistent with the previous idea that the jet has two spectral components, namely (1) the low-energy synchrotron spectrum extending from radio to infrared, and (2) the high-energy component responsible for the X-ray flux. The optical fluxes may be a mixture of the two components. We consider three radiation models for the high-energy component: inverse Compton scattering off CMB photons by radio-emitting electrons in a highly relativistic jet, synchrotron radiation by a second distinct electron population, and synchrotron radiation by ultra high energy protons. Here we present Spitzer Space Telescope imaging of Cyg A with the Infrared Array Camera, resulting in the detection of the high-energy tails or cut-offs in the synchrotron spectra for all four hotspots of this archetype radio galaxy. When combined with the other data collected from the literature, our observations allow for detailed modeling of the broad-band emission for the brightest spots A and D. We confirm that the X-ray flux detected previously from these features is consistent with the synchrotron self-Compton radiation for the magnetic field intensity 170 muG in spot A, and 270 muG in spot D. We also find that the energy density of the emitting electrons is most likely larger by a factor of a few than the energy density of the hotspots' magnetic field. We construct energy spectra of the radiating ultrarelativistic electrons. We find that for both hotspots A and D these spectra are consistent with a broken power-law extending from at least 100 MeV up to 100 GeV, and that the spectral break corresponds almost exactly to the proton rest energy of 1 GeV. We argue that the shape of the electron continuum reflects two different regimes of the electron acceleration process at mildly relativistic shocks, rather than resulting from radiative cooling and/or absorption effects. In this picture the protons' inertia defines the critical energy for the hotspot electrons above which Fermi-type acceleration processes may play a major role, but below which the operating acceleration mechanism has to be of a different type. At energies >100 GeV, the electron spectra cut-off/steepen again, most likely as a result of spectral aging due to radiative loss effects. A small number of double-lobed radio galaxies (17 from our own census of the literature) show an additional pair of low surface brightness `wings', thus forming an overall `X'-shaped appearance. The origin of the wings in these radio sources is unclear. They may be the result of back-flowing plasma from the currently active radio lobes into an asymmetric medium surrounding the active nucleus, which would make these ideal systems in which to study thermal/non-thermal plasma interactions in extragalactic radio sources. Another possibility is that the wings are the aging radio lobes left over after a (rapid) realignment of the central supermassive black-hole/accretion disk system due perhaps to a merger. Generally, these models are not well tested; with the small number of known examples, previous works focused on detailed case studies of selected sources with little attempt at a systematic study of a large sample. Using the VLA-FIRST survey database, we are compiling a large sample of winged and X-shaped radio sources for such studies. Highlights of recent observations of extended jets in AGN are presented. Specifically, we discuss new spectral constraints enabled by Spitzer, studies of the highest-redshift (z~4) radio/X-ray quasar jets, and a new VLBA detection of superluminal motion in the M87 jet associated with a recent dramatic X-ray outburst. Expanding on the title, inverse Compton emission from extended radio lobes is considered and a testable prediction for the gamma-ray emission in one exemplary example is presented. We present a ~100 ksec Chandra X-ray observation and new VLA radio data of the large scale, 300 kpc long X-ray jet in PKS1127-145, a radio loud quasar at redshift z=1.18. With this deep X-ray observation we now clearly discern the complex X-ray jet morphology and see substructure within the knots. The X-ray and radio jet intensity profiles are seen to be strikingly different with the radio emission peaking strongly at the two outer knots while the X-ray emission is strongest in the inner jet region. The jet X-ray surface brightness gradually decreases by an order of magnitude going out from the core. The new X-ray data contain sufficient counts to do spectral analysis of the key jet features. The X-ray energy index of the inner jet is relatively flat with alpha_X = 0.66 +/-0.15 and steep in the outer jet with alpha_X = 1.0 +/-0.2. We discuss the constraints implied by the new data on the X-ray emission models and conclude that ``one-zone'' models fail and at least a two component model is needed to explain the jet's broad-band emission. We propose that the X-ray emission originates in the jet proper while the bulk of the radio emission comes from a surrounding jet sheath. We investigate the variations of the magnetic field, Doppler factor, and relativistic particle density along the jet of a quasar at z=0.72. We chose 4C 19.44 for this study because of its length and straight morphology. The 18 arcsec length of the jet provides many independent resolution elements in the Chandra X-ray image. The straightness suggests that geometry factors, although uncertain, are almost constant along the jet. We assume the X-ray emission is from inverse Compton scattering of the cosmic microwave background. With the aid of assumptions about jet alignment, equipartition between magnetic-field and relativistic-particle energy, and filling factors, we find that the jet is in bulk relativistic motion with a Doppler factor about 6 at an angle no more than 10 degrees to the line of sight over deprojected distances about 150--600 kpc from the quasar, and with a magnetic field approximately 10 micro Gauss., Comment: To appear in "Black Holes: from Stars to Galaxies" Proceedings IAU Symp. A newly identified kiloparsec-scale X-ray jet in the high-redshift z=3.89 quasar 1745+624 is studied with multi-frequency Very Large Array, Hubble Space Telescope, and Chandra X-ray imaging data. This is only the third large-scale X-ray jet beyond z>3 known and is further distinguished as being the most luminous relativistic jet observed at any redshift, exceeding 10^45 erg/s in both the radio and X-ray bands. Apart from the jet's extreme redshift, luminosity, and high inferred equipartition magnetic field (in comparison to local analogues), its basic properties such as X-ray/radio morphology and radio polarization are similar to lower-redshift examples. Its resolved linear structure and the convex broad-band spectral energy distributions of three distinct knots are also a common feature among known powerful X-ray jets at lower-redshift. Relativistically beamed inverse Compton and `non-standard' synchrotron models have been considered to account for such excess X-ray emission in other jets; both models are applicable to this high-redshift example but with differing requirements for the underlying jet physical properties, such as velocity, energetics, and electron acceleration processes. One potentially very important distinguishing characteristic between the two models is their strongly diverging predictions for the X-ray/radio emission with increasing redshift. This is considered, though with the limited sample of three z>3 jets it is apparent that future studies targeted at very high-redshift jets are required for further elucidation of this issue. Finally, from the broad-band jet emission we estimate the jet kinetic power to be no less than 10^46 erg/s, which is about 10% of the Eddington luminosity corresponding to this galaxy's central [abridged], Comment: ApJ, accepted. We describe our program to search for and study the kilo-parsec scale radio jets in a sample of high-redshift (greater than 3.4), flat spectrum quasars using new and archival VLA data. Two of these radio jets have been imaged with Chandra, and have X-ray counterparts and are briefly discussed. These high-redshift sources are important targets for testing current X-ray jet emission models for kpc-scale jets and follow-up multi-wavelength observations will shed light on this problem., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We have performed infrared imaging of the jet of the quasar 3C 273 at wavelengths 3.6 and 5.8 microns with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. When combined with the radio, optical and X-ray measurements, the IRAC photometry clearly shows that the optical emission is dominated by the high-energy component of the jet, not by the radio synchrotron component, as had been assumed to date. The high-energy component may be due to a second synchrotron component or to IC scattering of ambient photons. In the former case, we argue that the acceleration of protons exceeding 10^16 eV or possibly even to 10^19 eV would be taking place in the jet. In contrast, the IC model, into which highly relativistic Doppler beaming has to be incorporated, requires very low-energy electrons (~ 1 MeV). The present polarization data in the radio and optical would favor the former interpretation in the case of the 3C 273 jet. Sensitive and detailed measurements of optical polarization are important to establish the radiation mechanism responsible for the high-energy emission. Modeling the multiwavelength emission of successive regions in the jet of the quasar PKS 1136-135 we find indication that the jet suffers deceleration near its end on a (deprojected) scale of ~400 kpc. Adopting a continuous flow approximation we discuss the possibility that the inferred deceleration from a Lorentz factor Gamma=6.5 to Gamma=2.5 is induced by entrainment of external gas. The X-ray intensity of knot HST-1, 0.85" from the nucleus of the radio galaxy M87, has increased by more than a factor of 50 during the last 5 years. The optical increase is similar and our more limited radio data indicate a commensurate activity. We give the primary results of our Chandra X-ray Observatory monitoring program and consider some of the implications of this extreme variability in a relativistic jet. We find that the data support a 'modest beaming synchrotron' model as indicated in our earlier papers. Based on this model, the decay of the X-ray lightcurve appears to be dominated by light travel time across the emitting region of HST-1, rather than synchrotron loss timescales., Comment: ApJ accepted, 7 pages, 4 figures

We report the first significant detection of an X-ray cluster associated with a powerful (L(bol) ~1e47 erg/sec) radio-loud quasar at high redshift (z=1.06). Diffuse X-ray emission is detected out to ~120 kpc from the CSS quasar 3C 186. A strong Fe-line emission at the z(rest)=1.06 confirms its thermal nature. We find that the CSS radio source is highly overpressured with respect to the thermal cluster medium by ~2-3 orders of magnitude. This provides direct observational evidence that the radio source is not thermally confined as posited in the ``frustrated'' scenario for CSS sources. Instead, the radio source may be young and at an early stage of its evolution. This source provides the first detection of the AGN in outburst in the center of a cooling flow cluster. Powerful radio sources are thought to be triggered by the cooling flows. The evidence for the AGN activity and intermittent outbursts comes from the X-ray morphology of low redshift clusters, which usually do not harbour quasars. 3C186 is a young active radio source which can supply the energy into the cluster and potentially prevent its cooling. We present deep (70-80 ks) Chandra and multicolor HST ACS images of two jets hosted by the powerful quasars 1136-135 and 1150+497, together with new radio observations. The sources have an FRII morphology and were selected from our previous X-ray and optical jet survey for detailed follow up aimed at obtaining better constraints on the jet multiwavelength morphology and X-ray and optical spectra of individual knots, and to test emission models deriving physical parameters more accurately. All the X-ray and optical knots detected in our previous short exposures are confirmed, together with a few new faint features. The overlayed maps and the emissivity profiles along the jet show good correspondence between emission regions at the various wavelengths; a few show offsets between the knots peaks of <1". In 1150+497 the X-ray, optical, and radio profiles decrease in similar ways with distance from the core up to ~7", after which the radio emission increases more than the X-ray one. No X-ray spectral variations are observed in 1150+497. In 1136-135 an interesting behavior is observed, whereby, downstream of the most prominent knot at ~ 6.5" from the core, the X-ray emission fades while the radio emission brightens. The X-ray spectrum also varies, with the X-ray photon index flattening from ~2 in the inner part to ~1.7 to the end of the jet. We intepret the jet behavior in 1136-135 in a scenario where the relativistic flow suffers systematic deceleration along the jet, and briefly discuss the major consequences of this scenario (abridged)., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures ps, 2 figures jpg, accepted for publication in ApJ

Emission from the relativistic jet located at hundreds of kpc from the core of the superluminal quasar PKS 0637-752 was detected at 3.6 and 5.8 microns with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The unprecedented sensitivity and arcsecond resolution of IRAC allows us to explore the mid-infrared emission from kiloparsec-scale quasar jets for the first time. The mid-infrared flux from the jet knots, when combined with radio and optical fluxes, confirms a synchrotron origin of the radio-to-optical emission and constrains very well the high energy end of the nonthermal electron distribution. Assuming the X-rays are produced in the relativistically moving knots via inverse Compton scattering of cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation, the infrared observation puts constraints on the matter content of the quasar extended jet. Specifically, pure electron-positoron pair jet models are unfavorable based on the lack of an infrared bump associated with ``bulk Comptonization'' of CMB photons by an ultrarelativistic jet., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We report the Chandra discovery of an X-ray cluster at redshift z = 1.063 associated with the Compact Steep Spectrum radio loud quasar 3C 186 (Q0740+380). Diffuse X-ray emission is detected out to ~120 kpc from the quasar and contains 741+/-40 net counts. The X-ray spectrum of the extended emission shows strong Fe-line emission (EW=412eV) at the quasar redshift and confirms the thermal nature of this diffuse component. We measure a cluster temperature of 5.2(+1.2/-0.9) keV and an X-ray luminosity L(0.5-2 keV) ~ 6e44 erg/sec, which are in agreement with the luminosity-temperature relation for high-redshift clusters. This is the first detection of a bright X-ray cluster around a luminous (L_bol ~1e47 erg/sec) CSS quasar at high redshift and only the fifth z>1 X-ray cluster detected. We find that the CSS radio source is highly overpressured with respect to the thermal cluster medium by about 3 orders of magnitude. This provides direct observational evidence that the radio source is not thermally confined as posited in the ``frustrated'' scenario for CSS sources. Instead, it appears that the radio source may be young and we are observing it at an early stage of its evolution. Archival Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 images were used to search for optical emission associated with the radio jets of a number of luminous quasars. From this search, we report new optical hotspot detections in the well-known blazar 3C~454.3 and the lobe-dominated quasars 3C~275.1 and 3C~336. We also find optical emission in the vicinity of the hotspot in 3C~208, but believe this is a chance alignment. Optical emission from the arcsecond-scale jet in 3C~454.3 is also detected. Multi-frequency archival radio data from the VLA and MERLIN are analyzed, and the synchrotron spectra of these high-power hotspots are presented. We estimate that their break frequencies are in the range of $10^{10}-10^{11}$ Hz, with large uncertainties due to the wide gap in frequency coverage between the radio and optical bands. We also calculate their equipartition magnetic fields, and find that the anti-correlation between break frequency and magnetic field found by Brunetti et al. for lower power hotspots extends to these high power hotspots. The Chandra discovery of bright X-ray emission from kpc-scale jets allows insight into the physical parameters of the jet flow at large scale. At the opposite extreme, extensive studies of the inner relativistic jets in Blazars with multiwavelength observations, yield comparable information on sub-parsec scales. In the framework of simple radiation models for the emission regions we compare the physical parameters of jets on these two very different scales in the only two well studied Blazars for which large-scale emission has been resolved by Chandra. Notably, we find that the relativistic Doppler factors and powers derived independently at the two scales are consistent, suggesting that the jet does not suffer severe deceleration or dissipation. Moreover the internal equipartition pressures in the inner jet and in the external X-ray bright knots scale inversely with the jet cross section as expected in the simple picture of a freely expanding jet in equipartition., Comment: 4 figures, accepted by ApJ

We present the results from an X-ray and optical survey of a sample of 17 radio jets in AGN performed with Chandra and HST. The sample was selected from the radio and is unbiased toward detection at shorter wavelengths, but preferentially it includes beamed sources. We find that X-ray emission is common on kpc-scales, with over half radio jets exhibiting at least one X-ray knot on the Chandra images. The distributions of the radio-to-X-ray and radio-to-optical spectral indices for the detected jets are similar to the limits for the non-detections,suggesting all bright radio jets have X-ray counterparts which will be visible in longer observations. Comparing the radio and X-ray morphologies shows that the majority of the X-ray jets have structures that closely map the radio. Analysis of the SED of the jet knots suggest the knots in which the X-ray and radio morphologies track each other produce X-rays by IC scattering of the Cosmic Microwave Background. The remaining knots produce X-rays by the synchrotron process. Spectral changes are detected along the jets, with the ratio of the X-ray-to-radio and optical-to-radio flux densities decreasing from the inner to the outer regions. This suggests the presence of an additional contribution to the X-ray flux in the jet's inner part, either from synchrotron or IC of the stellar light. Alternatively, in a pure IC/CMB scenario, the plasma decelerates as it flows from the inner to the outer regions. Finally, the X-ray spectral indices for the brightest knots are flat, indicating that the bulk of the luminosity of the jets is emitted at GeV energies, and raising the interesting possibility of future detections with GLAST., Comment: 26 pages, 6 ps figures, 6 jpeg figures (1 replaced); accepted for publication in ApJ

The recent discovery of an X-ray jet in the z=4.3 quasar GB 1508+5714 by Yuan et al. (astro-ph/0309318) and Siemiginowska et al. (astro-ph/0310241) prompted a search for its radio counterpart. Here, we report the successful discovery of faint radio emission from the jet at 1.4 GHz using archival VLA data. The X-ray emission is best interpreted as inverse Compton (IC) emission off the CMB as discussed by the previous investigators. In this scenario, its high X-ray to radio monochromatic luminosity ratio, compared to previously detected IC/CMB X-ray jets at lower redshift, is a natural consequence of its high redshift., Comment: 7 pages, with 4 figures. We present an XMM observation of the radio jet and diffuse halo of the nearby radio galaxy NGC6251. The EPIC spectrum of the galaxy's halo is best-fitted by a thermal model with temperature kT~1.6 keV and subsolar abundances. Interestingly, an additional hard X-ray component is required to fit the EPIC spectra of the halo above 3 keV, and is independently confirmed by an archival Chandra observation. However, its physical origin is not clear. Contribution from a population of undetected Low Mass X-ray Binaries seems unlikely. Instead, the hard X-ray component could be due to inverse Compton scattering of the CMB photons off relativistic electrons scattered throughout the halo of the galaxy, or non-thermal bremsstrahlung emission. The IC/CMB interpretation, together with limits on the diffuse radio emission, implies a very weak magnetic field, while a non-thermal bremsstrahlung origin implies the presence of a large number of very energetic electrons. We also detect X-ray emission from the outer (~3.5') jet, confirming previous ROSAT findings. Both the EPIC and ACIS spectra of the jet are best-fitted by a power law with photon index \~1.2. A thermal model is formally ruled out by the data. Assuming an origin of the X-rays from the jet via IC/CMB, as suggested by energetic arguments, and assuming equipartition implies a large Doppler factor (delta~10). Two high-resolution 5 GHz VSOP+VLBA images of the blazar 1633+382 reveal clear morphological change in both the bright inner east-west jet, and in the more diffuse structure further down the jet to the northwest. Multi-band near-infrared images of twelve BL Lacertae objects were obtained with the 2.5m telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory in order to determine the properties of their underlying host galaxies. Resolved emission was clearly detected in eight of the lowest redshift targets (up to z~0.3), and was modeled with a de Vaucouleurs r^{1/4} surface brightness law. We find that the morphologies match the elliptical galaxy profiles well, and that the BL Lac objects reside in large and luminous, but otherwise normal hosts -- consistent with previous studies done predominantly at optical wavelengths. The median absolute K-band magnitude of the galaxies in this study is -26.2, the average half-light radius is 4.2 +/- 2.3 kpc, and their average integrated R-K color is 2.7 +/- 0.3 mag. These are well within the range of values measured previously in the H-band by Kotilainen et al. and Scarpa et al. in a comparable number of targets. Taking their data together with our results, we find a best-fit K-band Kormendy relation of \mu_{e} = 4.3 log_{10} (r_{e}/kpc) + 14.2 mag arcsec^{-2}, virtually identical to that obtained for normal ellipticals. Finally, the near-infrared colors determined for five galaxies (average J-K = 0.8 +/- 0.3 mag) are the first such measurements for BL Lac hosts, and match those expected from old stellar populations at the BL Lac redshifts., Comment: 10 pages, includes 4 figures and 3 tables. We present the X-ray properties of a sample of 17 radio sources observed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory as part of a project aimed at studying the X-ray emission from their radio jets. In this paper, we concentrate on the X-ray properties of the unresolved cores. The sample includes 16 quasars (11 core-dominated and 5 lobe-dominated) in the redshift range z=0.30--1.96, and one low-power radio-galaxy at z=0.064. No diffuse X-ray emission is present around the cores of the quasars, except for the nearby low-power galaxy that has diffuse emission on a scale and with a luminosity consistent with other FRIs. No high-amplitude, short-term variability is detected within the relatively short Chandra exposures. However, 1510-089 shows low-amplitude flux changes with a timescale of $\sim$25 minutes. The X-ray spectra of the quasar cores are generally well described by a single power law model with Galactic absorption. However, in six quasars we find soft X-ray excess emission below 1.6 keV. Interestingly, we detect an Fe K-shell emission line, consistent with fluorescent Kalpha emission from cold Iron, in one lobe- and two core-dominated sources. The average X-ray photon index for the quasars in the sample is Gamma=1.66 and dispersion, sigma=0.23. The average spectral slope for our sample is flatter than the slope found for radio-quiet quasars and for radio-loud AGNs with larger jet orientations; this indicates that beaming affects the X-ray emission from the cores in our sample of quasars., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We report initial results from the detection of optical emission in the arcsecond-scale radio jets of two quasars utilizing images from the {\it Hubble Space Telescope} archive. The optical emission has a very knotty appearance and is consistent with synchrotron emission from highly relativistic electrons in the jet. Chandra snapshot observations of the three most distant quasars then known, at redshifts 5.82, 5.99, and 6.28, gave signficant detections even in the short, 6 -- 8 ks, observations. The X-ray to optical luminosity ratios indicate that quasars will be detectable in X-rays if they exist at even larger redshifts. The present observations hint at two exciting discoveries. An extended X-ray source 23 arcsec from SDSS1306+0356 may be a jet emitting inverse Compton radiation from the Cosmic Microwave Background. We report the detection of optical and ultraviolet emission from the kiloparsec scale jet of the well-known quasar 3C~279. A bright knot, discovered in archival V and U band {\it Hubble Space Telescope} Faint Object Camera images, is coincident with a peak in the radio jet $\sim0.6\arcsec$ from the nucleus. The detection was also confirmed in Wide Field Planetary Camera-2 images. Archival Very Large Array and MERLIN radio data are also analyzed which help to show that the high-energy optical/UV continuum, and spectrum, are consistent with a synchrotron origin from the same population of relativistic electrons responsible for the radio emission., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figs. accepted for publication in ApJL with minor revisions

We present the first results from an X-ray and optical survey of a sample of AGN radio jets with Chandra and HST. We focus here on the first six sources observed at X-rays, in four of which a bright X-ray jet was detected for the first time. In three out of four cases optical emission from the jet is also detected in our HST images. We compare the X-ray morphology with the radio as derived from improved processing of archival VLA data and we construct spectral energy distributions (SED) for the most conspicuous emission knots. In most cases the SEDs, together with the similarity of the X-ray and radio morphologies, favor an inverse Compton origin of the X-rays. The most likely origin of the seed photons is the Cosmic Microwave Background, implying the jets are still relativistic on kiloparsec scales. However, in the first knot of the PKS 1136-135 jet, X-rays are likely produced via the synchrotron process. In all four cases bulk Lorentz factors of a few are required. The radio maps of the two jets not detected by either Chandra or HST suggest that they are less beamed at large scales than the other four detected sources. Our results demonstrate that, at the sensitivity and resolution of Chandra, X-ray emission from extragalactic jets is common, yielding essential information on their physical properties., Comment: 32 pages; Fig 1-5 are in color. We report the detection at X-rays of the radio/optical jet of 3C 371, from a short (10 ks) Chandra exposure in March 2000. We also present a new MERLIN observation at 1.4 GHz together with a renalysis of the archival HST WFPC2 F555W image. Despite the limited signal-to-noise ratio of the Chandra data, the X-ray morphology is clearly different from that of the radio/optical emission, with the brightest X-ray knot at 1.7" from the nucleus and little X-ray emission from the brightest radio/optical knot at 3.1". We construct the spectral energy distributions for the two emission regions at 1.7" and 3.1". Both show that the X-ray flux is below the extrapolation from the radio-to-optical continuum, suggesting moderately beamed synchrotron from an electron population with decreasing high energy cut-off as a plausible emission mechanism., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures (Figure 1 is a color GIF file); accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters. We present a detailed recipe for making movies from multi-epoch radio observations of astronomical sources. Images are interpolated linearly in time to create a smooth succession of frames so that a continuous movie can be compiled. Here, we outline the procedure, and draw attention to specific details necessary for making a successful movie. In particular, we discuss the issues pertaining specifically to making polarization movies. The procedure described here has been implemented into scripts in NRAO's AIPS package (Brandeis AIPS Movie Maker -- BAMM) that are available for public use (http://www.astro.brandeis.edu)., Comment: NRAO AIPS Memo # 106. 4 pages, no figures.
