Abstract

In this study we report for the first time that \ Yb^2+ is an efficient and fast activator in iodide scintillator crystals. In both SrI 2 and CsBa 2 I 5, \ Yb^2+ offers blue luminescence (\lambda max = 414~\ nm), light yield greater than 50,000 Photons/MeV and sub-microsecond decay time. Abstract

This study reports on effects of dopant concentration and crystal size on some of the scintillation properties of SrI2:Eu2+. For example, the emission shifts to longer wavelengths as the dopant concentration is increased. It also results in scintillation decays getting slower: a 620 ns decay time constant observed for a small 0.5% Eu sample increases to 1650 ns for a 10%Eu sample. Similar changes in the time constant values were also observed when the crystal size was being increased. It also appears that larger samples yielded somewhat less light. These effects are attributed to radiation trapping, in which the scintillation light is multiple time absorbed and consequently emitted by the dopant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We have .constructed a second-generation Compton coincidence instrument, known as the Scintillator Light Yield Non-proportionality Characterization Instrument (SLYNCI), to characterize the electron response of scintillating materials. While the SLYNCI design includes more and higher efficiency HPGe detectors than the original apparatus (five 25%-30% detectors versus one 10% detector), the most novel feature is that no collimator is placed in front of the HPGe detectors. Because of these improvements, the SLYNCI data collection rate is over 30 times higher than the original instrument. In this paper, we present a validation study of this instrument, reporting on the hardware implementation, calibration, and performance. We discuss the analysis method and present measurements of the electron response of two different NaI:Tl samples. We also discuss the systematic errors of the measurement, especially those that are unique to SLYNCI. We find that the apparatus is very stable, but that careful attention must be paid to the energy calibration of the HPGe detectors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study presents the impact of temperature and pressure on AlN:Mn2+ luminescence kinetics. Unusual behavior of Mn2+ optical properties during UV excitation is observed, where a strong afterglow luminescence of Mn2+ occurs even at low temperatures. When the temperature increases, the contribution of the afterglow luminescence is further enhanced, causing a significant increase in the luminescence intensity. The observed phenomena may be explained by an energy diagram in which the ON–VAl complex in AlN:Mn2+ plays a key role. Hence the ON–VAl complex defect in AlN:Mn2+ plays a double role. When the ON–VAl defect is located close to Mn2+ ions, it is responsible for transferring excitation energy directly to Mn2+ ions. However, when the ON–VAl defect complex is located far from Mn2+ ions, its excited state level acts as an electron trap responsible for afterglow luminescence. Additionally, three models have been tested to explain the structure of the emission spectrum and the strong asymmetry between the excitation and emission spectra. From the most straightforward configuration coordinate diagram through the configuration coordinate diagram model assuming different elastic constants in the excited and ground-states ending by a model based on the Jahn–Teller effect. We proved that only the Jahn–Teller effect in the excited 4T1 electronic state with spin–orbit coupling could fully explain the observed phenomena. Finally, high-pressure spectroscopic results complemented by the calculations of Racah parameters and the Tanabe–Sugano diagram are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
