151. Dissolution of chromium-enriched inclusions and pitting corrosion of resulfurized stainless steels

Abstract

The dissolution of MnS inclusions enriched in chromium (30 to 40 wt pct Cr) and the corrosion susceptibility of resulfurized stainless steel were studied in various NaCl- and NaClO4-based solutions by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, secondary ion mass spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the electrochemical microcell technique. It has been shown that chromium-enriched inclusions do not undergo dissolution under free corrosion conditions. By contrast, electrochemical dissolution of inclusions occurs at high potential values (above 500 mV vs saturated calomel electrode) in all the solutions, followed by stable pitting. It has also been shown that some areas containing chromium-enriched inclusions exhibited stable pitting at low potentials (below 100 mV vs saturated calomel electrode) in the electrolytes with chloride ions. Field-emission SEM experiments have revealed that the matrix undergoes dissolution around these inclusions. An assumption is proposed for describing pitting corrosion mechanisms.

Abstract

The Double Chooz experiment presents improved measurements of the neutrino mixing angle theta(13) using the data collected in 467.90 live days from a detector positioned at an average distance of 1050m from two reactor cores at the Chooz nuclear power plant. Several novel techniques have been developed to achieve significant reductions of the backgrounds and systematic uncertainties with respect to previous publications, whereas the efficiency of the (nu) over bar (e) signal has increased. The value of theta(13) is measured to be sin(2)2 theta(13) = 0.090(-0.029)(+0.032) from a fit to the observed energy spectrum. Deviations from the reactor (nu) over bar (e) prediction observed above a prompt signal energy of 4 MeV and possible explanations are also reported. A consistent value of theta(13) is obtained from a fit to the observed rate as a function of the reactor power independently of the spectrum shape and background estimation, demonstrating the robustness of the theta(13) measurement despite the observed distortion.

Abstract

The Double Chooz experiment measures the neutrino mixing angle theta(13) by detecting reactor (nu) over bar (e) via inverse beta decay. The positron-neutron space and time coincidence allows for a sizable background rejection, nonetheless liquid scintillator detectors would profit from a positron/electron discrimination, if feasible in large detector, to suppress the remaining background. Standard particle identification, based on particle dependent time profile of photon emission in liquid scintillator, can not be used given the identical mass of the two particles. However, the positron annihilation is sometimes delayed by the orthopositronium (o-Ps) metastable state formation, which induces a pulse shape distortion that could be used for positron identification. In this paper we report on the first observation of positronium formation in a large liquid scintillator detector based on pulse shape analysis of single events. The o-Ps formation fraction and its lifetime were measured, finding the values of 44 +/- 12 % (sys.) +/- 5 % (stat.) and 3.68 ns +/- 0.17 ns (sys.) +/- 0.15 ns (stat.) respectively, in agreement with the results obtained with a dedicated positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy setup.

Abstract

In the double beta decay experiment NEMO 3 a precise knowledge of the background in the signal region is of outstanding importance. This article presents the methods used in NEMO 3 to evaluate the backgrounds resulting from most if not all possible origins. It also illustrates the power of the combined tracking-calorimetry technique used in the experiment.

Abstract

In the TRITIUM project, an on-site monitoring system is being developed to measure tritium (3H) levels in water near nuclear power plants. The quite low-energy betas emitted by 3H have a very short average path in water (5 μm as shown by simulations for 18 keV electrons). This path would be further reduced by impurities present in the water, resulting in a significant reduction of the detection efficiency. Therefore, one of the essential requirements of the project is the elimination of these impurities through a filtration process and the removal of salts in solution. This paper describes a water treatment system developed for the project that meets the following requirements: the water produced should be of near-pure water quality according to ISO 3696 grade 3 standard (conductivity < 10 μS/cm); the system should operate autonomously and be remotely monitored.

Abstract

Abstract: The influence of Mo addition on pitting corrosion resistance of lean duplex stainless steels is not clearly understood in alkaline chloride conditions even if this element is widely recognized to increase corrosion resistance in acidic and neutral environments. This work aims to study the effect of Mo on pitting corrosion of lean duplex stainless steels in synthetic concrete pore solutions simulating degraded concrete. Results are discussed with respect to the influence of Mo on pitting potential for two industrial alloys in chloride rich and carbonated solution simulating concrete pore environments. To establish the real effect of Mo addition on lean duplex corrosion and passivation properties, two specific laboratory lean duplex alloys, for which the only difference is strictly the Mo content, are also studied. Mo presented a strong positive influence on the pitting corrosion resistance of industrial and laboratory lean duplex stainless steels in all studied chloride-rich solutions, but its effect is as less pronounced as the pH increases. In presence of Mo, pitting initiates and propagates preferentially in the austenitic phase at high temperature. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

A new filler material, a stabilized ferritic welding wire, has been developed for the joining of the stabilized ferritic stainless steel sheets increasingly used in automotive exhaust systems. The joints obtained in the GMAW and GTAW processes behave at least as well in service as those obtained with austenitic filler wires. The new welding grade can also be applied to produce heterogeneous assemblies.

Abstract

The full data set of the NEMO-3 experiment has been used to measure the half-life of the two-neutrino double beta decay of 100 Mo to the ground state of 100 Ru, T 1 / 2 = 6.81 ± 0.01 stat - 0.40 + 0.38 syst × 10 18 year. The two-electron energy sum, single electron energy spectra and distribution of the angle between the electrons are presented with an unprecedented statistics of 5 × 10 5 events and a signal-to-background ratio of ∼ 80. Clear evidence for the Single State Dominance model is found for this nuclear transition. Limits on Majoron emitting neutrinoless double beta decay modes with spectral indices of n = 2 , 3 , 7 , as well as constraints on Lorentz invariance violation and on the bosonic neutrino contribution to the two-neutrino double beta decay mode are obtained.
