165. Analysis of flux leakage in a brushless permanent-magnet motor with embossed magnets

Abstract

This paper analyzes the magnetic characteristics of brushless permanent-magnet motors with embedded magnets. It shows that the flux leakage has a substantial effect on the air gap flux density interacting directly with the armature current to produce torque. The flux leakage parameters [Eta] and [Lambda] are expressed analytically in terms of the magnetic material properties and the motor dimensions. They are essential quantities for the accurate prediction of the average flux densities within the air gap and the magnet. The finite element numerical method is adopted to verify the analytical model. For the numerical example in this paper, the average deviation between the finite element result and the analytical one is about 1-2%. This finding confirms the suitability of the analytical model for the design purpose. Although design is not particularly emphasized in this paper, one section gives a simple explanation of flux leakage considerations in magnet design. Abstract

The purpose of thisstudy is to investigate the average treatment effect of the preferential tariff scheme at the HS 6‐digit level on the imports of fishery products between each OECD country and the world. The estimated results by employing a difference‐in‐differences with matching method show statistically positive average treatment effects for imports of frozen yellowfin tuna (HS030342) and fresh long‐finned tuna (HS030231) in many countries. However, there are also several negative average treatment effects on imports, implying that several OECD countries do not utilize preferential tariff schemes with exporter countries with sufficient productivity. This study fills the gap in the literature by providing more rigorous insights in the discussion regarding the trade creation/diversion effect of preferential trade agreements (PTAs). Abstract

Developing sensitive diagnostic methods for a longitudinal evaluation of the status of liver fibrosis is a priority. This study is aimed at assessing the significance of longitudinal positron emission tomography (PET) imaging with 18F-labeling tracers for assessing liver fibrosis in a rat model with bile duct ligation (BDL). Twenty-one 6-week-old Sprague-Dawley male rats were used in this study. Longitudinal PET images using [18F]N-2-(2-fluoroethoxy)benzyl)-N-(4-phenoxypyridin-3-yl)acetamide ([18F]FEPPA) (n = 3), [18F]fluoroacetate ([18F]FAc) (n = 3), and 18F-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose ([18F]FDG) (n = 3) were obtained at 0, 1, and 2 weeks after BDL. Biochemical assays, histological assays, immunohistochemical staining assays, and next generation sequencing analyses were also performed at 0 (n = 3), 1 (n = 3), 2 (n = 3), and 3 (n = 3) weeks after BDL, which demonstrated the severe damage in rat livers after BDL. Regarding [18F]FEPPA and [18F]FDG, there was a significantly higher uptake in the liver after BDL (both P < 0.05), which lasted until week 2. However, the uptake of [18F]FAc in the liver was not significantly different before and after BDL (P = 0.28). Collectively, both [18F]FEPPA and [18F]FDG can serve as sensitive probes for detecting the liver fibrosis. However, [18F]FAc is not recommended to diagnose liver fibrosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this paper, a novel vector control hysteresis current controller for induction motor drives is proposed. Coordination of three phase switches is made in the d-q phase plane. In addition to the current error, information of the current error derivative is further employed so that one can take full advantages of adding the zero voltage vector for reducing the switching frequency. A simple hardware implementation is also proposed such that merits of the conventional hysteresis current controller can still be kept. Theoretical basis and some simulation and experimental results are also covered in this context.

Abstract

In this paper, a very simple vector control algorithm is proposed for micro-based induction motor drives. The proposed method controls the motor torque directly and linearly to achieve instantaneous torque response without oscillation. The merits of this control method include its simple architecture and obviating the coordinate transformation. At the same time, a new space vector-based current controller is proposed to serve as a quick response torque controller of the proposed drive system. In addition to the current error, information on the current error derivative is further employed so that one can take more advantages of adding the zero voltage vector for reducing the switching frequency. As a result, the efficiency can be greatly increased. It is seen that through integration of the above two parts, the proposed drive system is very simple to implement and has very nice performance.

Abstract

In this paper, first, the conventional rotor field orientation vector control method is modified to achieve a simple architecture which obviates the generation of the unit vector and the time varying coordinate transformation such that even a low cost 8 bit microcomputer can be used for implementation. Second, a new current inverter is proposed to effectively coordinate with the proposed vector control algorithm. It has very nice tracking performance and lower switching frequency. As a result of this integration, the involved computation is much reduced and the efficiency can be greatly increased. Finally, a prototype system is implemented using a low cost signal chip microcomputer. Some simulation and experimental results are also given in the context.

Abstract

The adaptive cellular response to low oxygen tensions is mediated by the hypoxia‐inducible factors (HIFs), a family of heterodimeric transcription factors composed of HIF‐α and HIF‐β subunits. Prolonged HIF expression is a key contributor to cellular transformation, tumorigenesis and metastasis. As such, HIF degradation under hypoxic conditions is an essential homeostatic and tumour‐suppressive mechanism. LIMD1 complexes with PHD2 and VHL in physiological oxygen levels (normoxia) to facilitate proteasomal degradation of the HIF‐α subunit. Here, we identify LIMD1 as a HIF‐1 target gene, which mediates a previously uncharacterised, negative regulatory feedback mechanism for hypoxic HIF‐α degradation by modulating PHD2‐LIMD1‐VHL complex formation. Hypoxic induction of LIMD1 expression results in increased HIF‐α protein degradation, inhibiting HIF‐1 target gene expression, tumour growth and vascularisation. Furthermore, we report that copy number variation at the LIMD1 locus occurs in 47.1% of lung adenocarcinoma patients, correlates with enhanced expression of a HIF target gene signature and is a negative prognostic indicator. Taken together, our data open a new field of research into the aetiology, diagnosis and prognosis of LIMD1‐negative lung cancers.

Abstract

Poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(butadiene‐co‐acrylonitrile)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO‐b‐PBN‐b–PEO) triblock copolymers with three different compositions were synthesized from poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ethers and carboxylic acid‐terminated poly(butadiene‐co‐acrylonitrile) (CTBN) by ester coupling reaction at room temperature. The PEO‐b‐PBN‐b‐PEO was incorporated into anhydride cured epoxy thermosets to improve the fracture toughness by the formation of either nano‐sized spherical micelles or micron‐sized vesicles. The polymer chemical structure was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, and gel permeation chromatography. The morphology of PEO‐b‐PBN‐b–PEO within the epoxy thermosets was investigated using a transmission electron microscope, an atomic force microscope, and a scanning electron microscope. Also, we conducted impact testing and plane‐strain fracture toughness testing to evaluate the fracture toughness in terms of the impact strength and the critical stress intensity factors (KIC) for the modified epoxy thermosets. The results revealed that all the PEO‐b‐PBN‐b‐PEO triblock copolymers are more effective in the toughening of epoxy thermoset compare to CTBN. We found that the 5 wt% PEO‐b‐PBN‐b‐PEO modified epoxy thermoset containing micron‐sized vesicles exhibited the highest KIC, which was 3.23 times as high as the KIC of pristine epoxy thermoset. Besides, the glass transition temperature remained and the tensile modulus did not reduce remarkably when the amount of PEO‐b‐PBN‐b‐PEO added into epoxy was 5 wt%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract Background Alternative RNA splicing greatly increases proteome diversity and thereby contribute to species- or tissue-specific functions. The possibility to study alternative splicing (AS) events on a genomic scale using splicing-sensitive microarrays, including the Affymetrix GeneChip Exon 1.0 ST microarray (exon array), has appeared very recently. However, the application of this new technology is hindered by the lack of free and user-friendly software devoted to these novel platforms. Results In this study we present a Java-based freeware, easyExon http://microarray.ym.edu.tw/easyexon, to process, filtrate and visualize exon array data with an analysis pipeline. This tool implements the most commonly used probeset summarization methods as well as AS-orientated filtration algorithms, e.g. MIDAS and PAC, for the detection of alternative splicing events. We include a biological filtration function according to GO terms, and provide a module to visualize and interpret the selected exons and transcripts. Furthermore, easyExon can integrate with other related programs, such as Integrate Genome Browser (IGB) and Affymetrix Power Tools (APT), to make the whole analysis more comprehensive. We applied easyExon on a public accessible colon cancer dataset as an example to illustrate the analysis pipeline of this tool. Conclusion EasyExon can efficiently process and analyze the Affymetrix exon array data. The simplicity, flexibility and brevity of easyExon make it a valuable tool for AS event identification in genomic research.

Abstract

DNA sequence and epigenetic information embedded in chromatin must be faithfully duplicated and transmitted to daughter cells during cell division. However, how chromatin assembly and DNA replication are integrated remains unclear. We examined the contribution of the Tousled-like kinases 1 and 2 (TLK1/TLK2) to chromatin assembly and maintenance of replication fork integrity. We show that TLK activity is required for DNA replication and replication-coupled nucleosome assembly and that lack of TLK activity leads to replication fork stalling and the accumulation of single-stranded DNA, a phenotype distinct from ASF1 depletion. Consistent with these results, sustained TLK depletion gives rise to replication-dependent DNA damage and p53-dependent cell cycle arrest in G1. We find that deficient replication-coupled de novo nucleosome assembly renders replication forks unstable and highly dependent on the ATR and CHK1 checkpoint kinases, as well as poly(adenosine 5'-diphosphate-ribose) polymerase (PARP) activity, to avoid collapse. Human cancer data revealed frequent up-regulation of TLK genes and an association with poor patient outcome in multiple types of cancer, and depletion of TLK activity leads to increased replication stress and DNA damage in a panel of cancer cells. Our results reveal a critical role for TLKs in chromatin replication and suppression of replication stress and identify a synergistic lethal relationship with checkpoint signaling and PARP that could be exploited in treatment of a broad range of cancers.

Abstract

Background: Mesangial cells play an important role in the glomerulus to provide mechanical support and maintaine efficient ultrafiltration of renal plasma. Loss of mesangial cells due to pathologic conditions may lead to impaired renal function. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) can differentiate into many cell types, including mesangial cells. However transcriptomic profiling during MSC differentiation into mesangial cells had not been studied yet. The aim of this study is to examine the pattern of transcriptomic changes during MSC differentiation into mesangial cells, to understand the involvement of transcription factor (TF) along the differentiation process, and finally to elucidate the relationship among TF-TF and TF-key gene or biomarkers during the differentiation of MSC into mesangial cells. Results: Several ascending and descending monotonic key genes were identified by Monotonic Feature Selector. The identified descending monotonic key genes are related to stemness or regulation of cell cycle while ascending monotonic key genes are associated with the functions of mesangial cells. The TFs were arranged in a co-expression network in order of time by Time-Ordered Gene Co-expression Network (TO-GCN) analysis. TO-GCN analysis can classify the differentiation process into three stages: differentiation preparation, differentiation initiation and maturation. Furthermore, it can also explore TF-TF-key genes regulatory relationships in the muscle contraction process. Conclusions: A systematic analysis for transcriptomic profiling of MSC differentiation into mesangial cells has been established. Key genes or biomarkers, TFs and pathways involved in differentiation of MSC-mesangial cells have been identified and the related biological implications have been discussed. Finally, we further elucidated for the first time the three main stages of mesangial cell differentiation, and the regulatory relationships between TF-TF-key genes involved in the muscle contraction process. Abstract

Background: The differential risk of pneumonia among inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) use in patients with COPD requires more investigation, especially regarding beclomethasone-containing inhalers. The goal of this study was to compare the risk and benefit profile of different ICS/long-acting β2-agonist (LABA) combinations in patients with COPD.Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted by using national health insurance claims data from the years 2009 to 2015 in Taiwan and included patients with COPD with new ICS/LABA use. Propensity score matching and Cox regression models were used to estimate the hazard ratios of severe pneumonia and acute exacerbation for different ICS/LABA users.Results: Both budesonide/formoterol (BUD/FOR) dry-powder inhalers and beclomethasone/formoterol (BEC/FOR) metered-dose inhalers, compared with fluticasone propionate/salmeterol (FLU/SAL) delivered via the same device type, were associated with a lower risk of severe pneumonia (BUD/FOR hazard ratio [HR], 0.83 [95% CI, 0.70-0.98]; BEC/FOR HR, 0.69 [95% CI, 0.58-0.81]) and severe acute exacerbation (BUD/FOR HR, 0.88 [95% CI, 0.78-0.99]; BEC/FOR HR, 0.82 [95% CI, 0.72-0.93]). After additionally adjusting for the average daily ICS dose, BUD/FOR dry-powder inhaler users continued to have a significantly decreased risk of severe pneumonia (18%), although BEC/FOR metered-dose inhaler users did not. The results were consistent in most of the prespecified subgroups and across all the sensitivity analyses.Conclusions: This study augments the existing evidence concerning the different safety and effectiveness outcomes of ICS/LABA combinations in patients with COPD, which may be considered when making clinical treatment decisions. Abstract

While basal insulin remains the most effective antidiabetic agent and substantially reduces the risk of hypoglycemia, few studies have examined the comparative effect of basal insulin in the real-world setting. This study aimed to assess the outcomes of adding basal insulin compared with thiazolidinediones (TZDs) or dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4is) as a third antidiabetic agent in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A retrospective cohort study involving T2DM was conducted with health administrative data in Taiwan. Patients starting a third antidiabetic agent after receiving a metformin-containing dual combination were identified. The study endpoints included composite major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs), all-cause mortality, and hypoglycemia. Propensity score matching and Cox modeling were used for analysis. After matching, the basal insulin and TZD groups contained 6,101 and 11,823 patients, respectively, and the basal insulin and DPP-4i groups contained 6,051 and 11,900 patients, respectively. TZDs and DPP-4is were both associated with similar risks of MACEs and hypoglycemia but a lower risk of all-cause mortality than basal insulin (TZDs: HR 0.55, 95% CI 0.38–0.81; DPP-4is: HR 0.56, 95% CI 0.39–0.82). Further studies are needed to elucidate the findings of increased all-cause mortality risk in patients receiving basal insulin, especially those with advanced diabetes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
