The levitation and pinning force properties of nanocrystalline MgB₂ superconductors prepared by a mechanical alloying technique with varying milling duration have been investigated. Levitation force measurements under zero-field-cooled regime were carried out at different temperatures (16, 25 and 30 K) as a function of the gap between bottom surface of the superconductor and the top surface of a cylindrical Nd-Fe-B permanent magnet whose diameter and height are 30 mm. An increase in the levitation force was observed due to the decrease in particle size caused by increasing the milling time. It was determined the levitation force of the sample milled for 72 h was higher than that milled for 24 h at the same measurement temperature. This is indicative of an enhancing flux pinning capability at the grain boundaries of the MgB₂. Also, it was observed that the pinning properties of the superconductor shifted from surface pinning to normal point pinning above Bmax when the milling time was increased from 24 to 72 h.

PubMed ID: 24562515, Objectives: To determine the prognostic importance of admission time, admission day, admission source, and route of admission, attached devices before admission, diagnosis of patients, and total Simplified Acute Physiology Score (SAPS) II score during admission on intensive care unit mortality rates. Methods: This retrospective study was carried out with 545 patients admitted to adult intensive care units between January 2006 and January 2011 at Zonguldak, Turkey. Computerised database and patient records were used for data collection. Data from the patient records was collected by a constructed survey form and SAPS II scale. Te data was evaluated by numeric values and percentages, Pearson correlation analysis, logistic regression analysis, Chi-square, and student t-tests. Results: Te mortality rate was 60.4%. Te patients who died had a higher SAPS II score. Te mortality rate was higher in admissions from the emergency department (p=0.000), admissions of patients on a stretcher (p=0.000), the existence of an intubation tube (p=0.000) and monitor (p=0.001), and in patients with respiratory tract illness (p=0.000), and infection (p=0.000). A significant difference was not found between the admission day (p=0.761), and time (p=0.063). Conclusion: Te SAPS II scores of the patients, the route of admission and admission source, being intubated and connected to a monitor, admission diagnosis, and length of stay in intensive care units was increased to mortality rate. However, the days and hours of admission did not significantly affect mortality.

WOS: 000360230200004, We fabricated malic acid -added bulks by wet mixing and "Two-step solid state reaction method". The effects of adding malic acid on , behaviour and lateral levitation force features of bulk have been investigated. A systematic decrease in the critical temperature with increasing adding level confirms the substitution of C at the B site of . While the 4 wt% sample showed the best of at 4 T and 5 K, 15 wt% sample showed uncompetitive lower critical current density , which ascribes the poor connectivity due to the excessive unsubstituted C distribution at grain boundaries and the presence of high MgO amount. At 24 and 28 K, the 4 and 6 wt% malic-acid-added samples exhibit a higher lateral force than pure sample. The antioxidant activities of the derivatives were measured using different methods in this study, including reducing power capacity, metal chelating activity, superoxide anion radicals scavenging activity, H2O2 scavenging activity and hydroxyl radical scavenging. As a result, derivatives had efficient antioxidant and free radical scavenging activity when compared to ascorbic acid, BHT and alpha-tocopherol as associated antioxidants.

In the present study, in vitro antioxidant activities of ethanol and water extracts of Rubus discolor L. leaves, flower, unripe and ripe fruits were investigated. Additionally, the antioxidant and protective properties of R. discolor flower (RD) water extract on some important biochemical parameters against hydrogen peroxide (HP)-induced oxidative stress in rats were determined. The phytochemical profiles and antioxidant properties (scavenging against DPPH•, ABTS•+, H2O2, O2-, metal chelating, inhibition of lipid peroxidation and reducing power) of extracts were determined by spectrophotometric methods and HPLC. The antioxidant potential of RD flower extract supplementations were evaluated by measuring total protein, glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), vitamin A and E, cholesterol, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels in various tissues. The flower extracts were the most active extracts for in vitro antioxidant assays. In HP administered groups, MDA level was increased, GSH and total protein levels were decreased. In RD treated group, these substances levels were protected. In RD plus HP treated group, SOD and GSH-Px levels were increased. These results show that RD flower extract have the protective effects against H2O2 via its free radical scavenging activity, and this extract affected the level of antioxidant enzymes, vitamin A and E, cholesterol, GSH, total protein and MDA. © 2015, Turkish Pharmacists Association. BAYDIN, AHMET/0000-0003-4987-0878; WOS: 000358790400008 PubMed: 26221883 OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine our performance and factors effecting outcomes in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for the patients with trauma in the Emergency Department (ED). PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a period of 5 years, file data of 136 consequtive adult trauma patients who have required CPR in our ED were collected, retrospectively. Patients were divided into subgroups according to years, mechanism of trauma, hour of the trauma, location of cardiac arrest, the period of the CPR, the rhythm during the onset of arrest, atropine use and ED specialist accompaniment. Patients were also divided into two subgroups as those who died in the ED and those who survived. RESULTS: The leading cause of trauma was motor vehicle accidents. The period between arrest and CPR was 0-5 minutes in 92 patients. Of these 92 patients 12 have survived and as the time prolonges, number of survivors tended to decrease. The most common rhythm determined shortly before cardiac arrest was asystole. When all patients with trauma requiring CPR were considered, overall rate of survival was found to be 9.5%. When an ED specialist accompanied, survival rate increased. According to the rates of survival, atropine was found to be useless. CONCLUSIONS: Our results revealed that, when performed in the leadership of an ED specialist, more successful outcomes may be obtained in CPR in trauma patients. We also determined that use of atropine does not contribute to survival rate. As CPR prolonges, the success rate falls.

Chemoprevention is a rapidly growing area of oncology that is identifying agents with a potentially preventive role in cancer. In this study, it was our goal to compare the chemopreventive effects of vitamin E plus selenium, and melatonin. Forty female mice were divided into four equal groups. The first group served as control. The second group had i.p. injections of 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) (20 mg/kg body weight) in corn oil for 21 days. The third group had the same procedure of DMBA injections as the second group and received vitamin E + selenium (90 microg + 1.8 microg/day), simultaneously. The fourth group had DMBA injections and melatonin (4.2 mg/kg body weight), simultaneously. DMBA alone caused significant inhibition of hepatic glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx), catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the second group. In the third group, vitamin E + selenium restored DMBA-induced GSHPx inhibition significantly whereas CAT and SOD inhibition remained essentially unchanged. In the fourth group, melatonin not only significantly decreased DMBA-induced GSHPx inhibition but also fully reversed CAT and SOD inhibitions caused by DMBA. We speculate that melatonin alone provides better chemoprevention against DMBA-induced oxidative stress than the vitamin E+selenium combination.

Purpose: Behçet's disease is a multisystem disease characterized by recurrent oral and genital ulcers, relapsing uveitis, mucocutaneous, articular, gastrointestinal, neurologic, and vascular manifestations. Paraoxonase is believed to play an important role in protection of LDL and HDL particles from oxidation, in antioxidant effect against lipid peroxidation on cellular membranes, and in anti-inflammatory process. Lipid peroxidation and free oxygen radicals have been thought to play a role in pathogenesis of BD. The association of paraoxonase gene polymorphisms with Behçet's Disease in a group of Turkish patients with clinical manifestations and healthy controls has been investigated. Patients and Methods: Paraoxonase (PON-1-L55M) gene polymorphism was investigated in 50 Behcet patients and 50 healthy individuals with a PCR/RFLP method. Results: There were significant differences between patients and the control group in allele frequencies of the PON1 L55M polymorphism (p=0.04). Also, when patients were compared with the control group according to clinical manifestations, this statistical significance was getting sharper. Compared with the PON55 L allele, the M allele was associated with greater than 3.5 fold (OR 3.5, 95% CI 1.3-8.9) increased risk of ocular (OR 2.4, 95% CI 1.1-5.3), 2.4 fold joint and 3.1 fold (OR 3.1, 95% CI 1.1-8.4) central nervous system manifestations of BD. Conclusion The PON L55M gene polymorphism seemed to play a role in the pathogenesis of BD.

The levitation properties of MgB prepared by hot press at 200 C and then pellet/closed tube method has been investigated. The vertical and lateral levitation forces ( and on a cylindrical NdFeB permanent magnet (PM) below a disk-shaped bulk MgB were measured during the vertical and lateral traverses of the PM in different cooling heights (CHs) and measurement heights (MHs) at temperatures of 20, 25 and 30 K to investigate the effect of the initial CH and MH on the levitation performance of MgB. For temperatures below 30 K, it was observed that increases with increasing CH. However, a minute variation in and a big hysteresis loop are observed at 30 K. From the lateral traverses, it was obtained that the with attractive character increases with decreasing MH and the hysteresis effect increases for small MHs due to the increment of the magnetic field intensity which the sample feels with decreasing MH. In addition, it was seen that the character of varies depending on both MH and measurement temperature. The higher hysteresis obtained in than in during lateral traverses implies that the motion of the flux lines in MgB is especially in lateral rather than vertical direction. Finally in this study, it was shown that the levitation performance of MgB depends not only on the measurement temperature but also on the CH and MH conditions. These results can be useful for optimizing the levitation performance of MgB superconductors for potential applications.

MgB2 bulk superconductors were prepared by hot press plus furnace heating method. Two types of boron powders were used, one is amorphous nano boron and the other is C-doped boron. Characteristics of superconductors were determined by XRD and resistance measurements. Systematic levitation force measurements were performed by using a modular system at low temperatures. These bulk superconductors showed around 9 N repulsive and 4 N attractive forces in the z-axis at 20 K at closest point to the cryostat lid which contains the MgB2 superconductor. These values slightly decreased by increasing temperature to 24 and 28 K for both samples. Comparing two samples, nano boron MgB2 showed slightly higher levitation force than C-doped MgB2 although C-doped MgB2 has higher attractive force value at the closest point. This situation points out that C-doped MgB2 is much proper for attractive force applications (as guidance force) while the nanoboron MgB2 sample is much appropriate for repulsive force (as levitation).
