Celanese Corporation, a global chemical and speciality materials company, reported on 6 Nov 2023 3Q 2023 financial results. Celanese reported 3Q 2023 operating cash flow of $403 M and free cash flow of $268 M which included cash capital expenditures of $131 M. Celanese returned $76 M in cash to shareholders via dividends in the quarter. The effective income tax rate was a benefit of 33% for 3Q 2023 compared to an expense of 40% for the same quarter in 2022. The lower effective rate was primarily due to the relocation of certain intangible assets to align with the acquired M&M foreign operations, differences in the tax and US GAAP gain from the formation of the Nutrinova JV, decreased earnings in high taxed jurisdictions related to current demand conditions, and a decrease in valuation allowances on US foreign tax credit carryforwards due to revised forecasts of foreign sourced income and expenses during the carryforward period. The effective tax rate for 2023 adjusted earnings was revised to 9% based on the expected jurisdictional earnings mix for the full year and consideration of other non-recurring US GAAP items. Celanese Corporation, a global speciality materials and chemical company, announced on 16 Oct 2023 the commercial introduction of multiple new sustainable engineering thermoplastic solutions that provide manufacturers with excellent mechanical and other properties while also supporting the shift to a more circular economy. The launch of these materials derived from recycled content (ECO-R) continues the company's efforts to offer manufacturers a choice of sustainable solutions across its full portfolio of materials. Santoprene TPV already provides an easier-to-recycle alternative to thermoset rubber for applications in automotive, consumer goods, building and construction and other industries. The new ECO-R solutions go further by incorporating post-consumer recyclate (PCR) into the formulations. With an estimated minimum of 25% PET-PCR, these new Celanex PBT ECO-R PBT/PET blends enable manufacturers of automotive applications and consumer goods to have more sustainable product options while maintaining excellent mechanical properties. Junction bars, air vents and windshield wipers are three potential applications for these solutions. Commercialized in North America and Europe, the new Tecnoprene PP ECO-R solutions are made from an estimated minimum of 30% recycled content by weight. Celanese Corporation, a global speciality materials and chemical company, collaborated with Tier 2 automotive parts supplier Trelleborg Boots to design and prove the manufacturability of a suspension jounce bumper that requires no base cup, ring or dust cover bellow, with the dust protection bellow now integrated into the jounce bumper. This new jounce bumper combined with the dust cover bellow is press blow moulded from Hytrel TPC thermoplastic elastomer. Already proven in millions of vehicles for Constant Velocity Joint (CVJ) boots, the jounce bumper made using Hytrel TPC is expected to be more durable than ones made with polyurethane foam, the incumbent material for this application. Additionally, the Hytrel TPC solution can be easily identified, dismantled, recycled and reused at the end of a vehicle's useful life. Celanese Corporation, a global speciality materials and chemical company, announced on 16 Oct 2023 the global commercial launch of two new polyamide (PA) solutions for manufacturers of electric vehicle (EV) powertrain components and EV battery applications. The Frianyl PA W-Series of flame-retardant PA solutions enables the manufacturing of large, thick-walled, flame-retardant components for EV batteries. With the W-Series solutions, manufacturers can improve the safety of these components, introduce novel new designs and enhance manufacturing efficiency. Potential applications include battery module housings, e-box housings and covers, and more. The W-Series solutions achieve V-0 flame retardance at 1.5 mm, combined with excellent flow characteristics. Compared to standard PA66 grades with 30% glass fibre reinforcement, the equivalent grade of the new W-Series offers a 10-20% improvement in flow in an injection mould, depending on the pressure applied. Improved flow means manufacturers can consider new designs and more readily fill moulds during processing, potentially leading to cycle time reductions. The W-Series solutions also have excellent laser markability with all common laser marking processes. In addition, the Frianyl PA W-Series solutions exhibit an excellent Comparative Tracking Index (CTI) even after aging at 125 degC for 1000 hours. Long-term colour stability of parts manufactured from these materials, measured at 125 degC, is also notable with no visible change to the eye, and even only a nominal change when measured in a colour lab. Celanese also introduced Celanyl PA B3 GF30 E, a new PA-based compound for semi- and structural EV powertrain applications. With this grade, the HB flame class is achieved, as well as a CTI of 600 even after 3000 hours of aging at 150 degC. The extremely low halide content in the Celanyl PA B3 GF330 E solution makes it an electrically friendly option for applications like connectors, switches, relays, busbars and sensors that can malfunction or short circuit when voltage is applied. Malfunctions often occur because of three factors: surface moisture, elevated temperature and traces of halide ions such as chlorine, bromine or iodine that can lead to electrolytic corrosion. The Celanyl B3 GF330 E solution helps manufacturers overcome these performance challenges. The Frianyl PA W-Series and Celanyl PA B3 GF30 E solutions are now commercially available globally.
