This study aimed to evaluate the lethal toxicity of chlorpyrifos and its effect on food consumption, oxygen consumption rate, ammonia excretion rate and O: N ratio of P. hypophthalmus fingerlings. The acute bioassay test was performed by adopting the static renewal method. Results showed that the median lethal concentration (LC
50 ) of Chlorpyrifos for 96 h was 0.1060 mg L-1 . One-fifth T1 (0.0212 mg L-1 ) and one-tenth T2 (0.0106 mg L-1 ) of LC50 values were selected for sublethal studies for 45 days revealed that the food consumption rate, oxygen consumption rate and O: N ratio decreased significantly (p<0.05), while ammonia excretion rate increased significantly (p<0.05) at both the concentrations as compared to control. The results obtained in this study proposed that measurements of food consumption rate, oxygen consumption rate, ammonia excretion and O: N ratio can be useful as a stress indicators of P. hypophthalmus fingerlings.
