Abstract: The Galileo National Telescope (TNG) is a 3.6 meter Alt-Az telescope installed at the Astronomical Observatory of the Roque de Los Muchachos in La Palma, Canary Islands (Spain). The Galileo drive and control systems were designed and developed by the Technology Working Group (TWG) of the Capodimonte Astronomical Observatory, Naples (Italy). Apart from a short review of the drive system, the paper describes a novelty in the adaptive preload sub-system.

Abstract: The encoder is the most used angular transducer in position control applications, such as the main axes position control of a telescope. In astronomical applications a very high precision in axes control is required. So a good encoder system design is essential to satisfy the requirements settled by the scientific goals. Today very good encoder systems (glass disk and associated readout electronics) are provided by several suppliers, with multiple readouts and error compensation capabilities to increase the reading precision and lessen the errors. Nevertheless during the lifetime of the system some unexpected errors can arise. In this paper some techniques to recognize, analyze and lessen the unavoidable encoder system error are described, with reference to some case studies.

Abstract: Recently, neural network models (NN), such as the multilayer perceptron (MLP), have emerged as important components for applications of adaptive control theories. Their intrinsic generalization capability, based on acquired knowledge, together with execution rapidity and correlation ability between input stimula, are basic attributes to consider MLP as an extremely powerful tool for on-line control of complex systems. By a control system point of view, not only accuracy and speed, but also, in some cases, a high level of adaptation capability is required in order to match all working phases of the whole system during its lifetime. This is particularly remarkable for a telescope control system. In fact, strong changes in terms of system speed and instantaneous position error tolerance are necessary. In this paper we introduce the idea of a new approach (NVSPI, neural variable structure PI) related to the implementation of a MLP network in an Alt-Az telescope control system to improve the PI adaptive capability in terms of flexibility and accuracy of the dynamic response range. ©2004 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Abstract: The performance of on Alt-Az telescope depend strongly on its operating conditions. During pointing the telescope can move at a relatively high velocity, and the system can tolerate trajectory position errors higher than during tracking. On the contrary, during tracking Alt-Az telescopes generally move slower but still in a large dynamic range. In this case the position errors must be as close to zero as possible. Furthermore the two pointing and tracking phases are executed in sequence without a well defined switch phase between them. A fixed structure controller cannot optimize the telescope performance in terms of error amount in the whole requested dynamic range. On the contrary a digital controller has the ability to modify its structure and its parameter values during operations, according to the instantaneous error values, system status, system actual speed and system characterization. Abstract: BACKGROUND. The medical treatment of advanced medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is still questionable. Results of chemotherapy are disappointing with almost no curative responses, few partial responses, and many side-effects. A recent report has suggested the activity of combination recombinant interferon alpha-2b (rIFN-alpha-2b) and octreotide, a somatostatin analogue, in the treatment of a metastatic carcinoid tumor. This new therapeutic schedule may be used in other neuroendocrine tumors. In this study we evaluated the therapeutic effectiveness of octreotide and rIFN-alpha-2b in patients with advanced MTC. METHODS. Eight patients affected by advanced MTC received octreotide at a daily dose of 150 micrograms for 6 months and subsequently at a daily dose of 300 micrograms for another 6 months, subcutaneously, and rIFN-alpha-2b at a daily dose of 5.000.000 IU intramuscularly 3 times a week for 12 months. Plasma calcitonin, carcinoembryonic antigenic levels, and morphologic staging were evaluated at 0, 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. RESULTS. The therapy was stopped in two patients because of diarrhea and toxicity of drugs used. Pre-existing diarrhea in four patients and flushing in one significantly improved during treatment. A maximum decrease of calcitonin was reached after 1 month in 2 patients and after 3 months in 4. In all of the patients carcinoembryonic antigen levels decreased during treatment. No significant changes of size of metastases were observed. CONCLUSIONS. The combination of octreotide and interferon is well tolerated and can be recommended for the treatment of advanced MTC.

Abstract: CHEOPS is a 2nd generation VLT instrument for the direct detection of extrasolar planets. The project is currently in its Phase A. It consists of an high order adaptive optics system which provides the necessary Strehl ratio for the differential polarimetric imager (ZIMPOL) and an Integral Field Spectrograph (IFS). The IFS is a very low resolution spectrograph (R~15) which works in the near IR (0.95-1.7 mum), an ideal wavelength range for the ground based detection of planetary features. In our baseline design, the Integral Field Unit (IFU) is a microlens array of about 250x250 elements which will cover a field of view of about 3.5x3.5 arcsecs2 in proximity of the target star. In this paper we describe the instrument, its preliminary optical design and the basic requirements about detectors. In a separate contribution to this conference, we present the very low resolution disperser.

Abstract: We present the status of the VLT Survey Telescope (VST) and OmegaCAM projects. VST is a 2.6m telescope which will be integrated in the ESO-VLT environment at Paranal and will be equipped with a 16k × 16k CCD camera (OmegaCAM) covering 1 square degree with a resolution of 0.21 arcsec/pix. The main scope of this observing facility is the selection of targets for VLT science. It is expected that VST+OmegaCAM will become operational in spring 2004.

Abstract: In this paper, the development of the dual mirror Small Size Telescopes (SST) for the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is reviewed. Up to 70 SST, with a primary mirror diameter of 4 m, will be produced and installed at the CTA southern site. These will allow investigation of the gamma-ray sky at the highest energies accessible to CTA, in the range from about 1 TeV to 300 TeV. The telescope presented in this contribution is characterized by two major innovations: the use of a dual mirror Schwarzschild-Couder configuration and of an innovative camera using as sensors either multi-anode photomultipliers (MAPM) or silicon photomultipliers (SiPM). The reduced plate-scale of the telescope, achieved with the dual-mirror optics, allows the camera to be compact (40 cm in diameter), and low-cost. The camera, which has about 2000 pixels of size 6x6 mm^2, covers a field of view of 10{\deg}. The dual mirror telescopes and their cameras are being developed by three consortia, ASTRI (Astrofisica con Specchi a Tecnologia Replicante Italiana, Italy/INAF), GATE (Gamma-ray Telescope Elements, France/Paris Observ.) and CHEC (Compact High Energy Camera, universities in UK, US and Japan) which are merging their efforts in order to finalize an end-to-end design that will be constructed for CTA. A number of prototype structures and cameras are being developed in order to investigate various alternative designs. Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will consist of an array of three types of telescopes covering a wide energy range, from tens of GeV up to more than 100 TeV. The high energy section (> 3 TeV) will be covered by the Small Size Telescopes (SST). ASTRI (Astrofisica con Specchi a Tecnologia Replicante Italiana) is a flagship project of the Italian Ministry of Research and Education led by INAF, aiming at the design and construction of a prototype of the Dual Mirror SST. In a second phase the ASTRI project foresees the installation of the first elements of the SST array at the CTA southern site, a mini-array of 5-7 telescopes. The optimization of the layout of this mini-array embedded in the SST array of the CTA Observatory has been the object of an intense simulation effort. Abstract: ASTRI (Astrofisica con Specchi a Tecnologia Replicante Italiana) is an Italian flagship project pursued by INAF (Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica) strictly linked to the development of the Cherenkov Telescope Array, CTA. Primary goal of the ASTRI program is the design and production of an end-to-end prototype of a Small Size Telescope for the CTA sub-array devoted to the highest gamma-ray energy region. The prototype, named ASTRI SST-2M, will be tested on field in Italy during 2014. This telescope will be the first Cherenkov telescope adopting the double reflection layout in a Schwarzschild-Couder configuration with a tessellated primary mirror and a monolithic secondary mirror. The collected light will be focused on a compact and light-weight camera based on silicon photo-multipliers covering a 9.6 deg full field of view. Detailed Monte Carlo simulations have been performed to estimate the performance of the planned telescope. Abstract: ASTRI is a flagship project of the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research, which aims to develop an end-to-end prototype of the CTA small-size telescope. Abstract: ASTRI is a Flagship Project financed by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research, and led by INAF, the Italian National Institute of Astrophysics. Within this framework, INAF is currently developing an end-to-end prototype of a Small Size Telescope in a dual-mirror configuration (SST-2M) for the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), scheduled to start data acquisition in 2014. Although the ASTRI SST-2M prototype is mainly a technological demonstrator, it will perform scientific observations of the Crab Nebula, Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 at E>1 TeV. A remarkable improvement in terms of performance could come from the operation, in 2016, of a SST-2M mini-array, composed of a few SST-2M telescopes to be placed at final CTA Southern Site. The SST mini-array will be able to study in great detail relatively bright sources (a few x 10E-12 erg/cm2/s at 10 TeV) with angular resolution of a few arcmin and energy resolution of about 10-15%. Thanks to the stereo approach, it will be possible to verify the wide field of view (FoV) performance through the detections of very high-energy showers with core located at a distance up to 500 m, to compare the mini-array performance with the Monte Carlo expectations by means of deep observations of selected targets, and to perform the first CTA science at the beginning of the mini-array operations. Prominent sources such as extreme blazars, nearby well-known BL Lac objects and radio-galaxies, galactic pulsar wind nebulae, supernovae remnants, micro-quasars, and the Galactic Center can be observed in a previously unexplored energy range, in order to investigate the electron acceleration and cooling, relativistic and non relativistic shocks, the search for cosmic-ray (CR) Pevatrons, the study of the CR propagation, and the impact of the extragalactic background light on the spectra of the sources., Comment: In Proceedings of the 33rd International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC2013), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Abstract: The thermal stability, crystallization behavior, and morphology of poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) with differing compositions of vinyl alcohol and butyral units were investigated. It was found that the glass-transition temperature of PVB decreases with increasing concentration of butyral units, mainly because of the reduced number of hydrogen bonds between hydroxyl groups of the chains. PVB samples with high vinyl alcohol content (≥63.3% by weight) are crystallizable and present an endothermic melting peak in the range 170–220°C. The thermal stability of PVB is also influenced by composition and increases with the number of butyral units. The thermal and crystallization characteristics of PVB were compared with those of neat polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and the differences explained in terms of molecular structure. Two amorphous PVB samples, containing 31 and 14 wt % of vinyl alcohol units, respectively, were blended with isotactic polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride (PP–MA), the latter of which was present to favor compatibilization of the components through chemical reaction or dipolar interactions involving the anhydride groups of the PP–MA and the hydroxyl groups of PVB. Properties of PP–MA/PVB 90/10 blends, prepared by melt extrusion, were compared to those of neat PP–MA. Both the PVBs used were immiscible with PP–MA, as indicated by the invariance of glass-transition temperatures with the composition of the blends. However, a high level of compatibility between the components was achieved because the blends showed good mechanical properties that were comparable to, or even superior to, those of neat PP–MA. The analysis of the crystallization kinetics, performed both in isothermal and nonisothermal modes, showed that crystallization of polypropylene is only slightly influenced by the presence of the PVB phase. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Abstract: It has been widely shown that weak lensing surveys can be used for detecting dark matter concentrations. Here we use the aperture mass method to predict the detectability and number density of cluster-sized halos from a weak lensing survey as expected from the future space-based Euclid mission. The method bases on the image distortion of back- ground galaxies caused by the gravitational potential of intervening dark matter distribution. Preliminary results on the expected number density of halos with a given signal-to-noise ratio are presented for different cosmologies, showing how halo number counts can be a useful probe to discriminate among different cosmological models.

Abstract: The approach of Observational Astronomy is mainly aimed at the construction of larger aperture telescopes, more sensitive detectors and broader wavelength coverage. Certainly fruitful, this approach turns out to be not completely fulfilling the needs when phenomena related to the formation of black holes (BH), neutron stars (NS) and relativistic stars in general are concerned. Recently, mainly through the Vela, Beppo-SAX and Swift satellites, we reached a reasonable knowledge of the most violent events in the Universe and of some of the processes we believe are leading to the formation of black holes (BH). We plan to open a new window of opportunity to study the variegated physics of very fast astronomical transients, particularly the one related to extreme compact objects. The innovative approach is based on three cornerstones: 1) the design (the conceptual design has been already completed) of a 3m robotic telescope and related focal plane instrumentation characterized by the unique features: "No telescope points faster"; 2) simultaneous multi-wavelengths observations (photometry, spectroscopy o\& polarimetry); 3) high time resolution observations. The conceptual design of the telescope and related instrumentation is optimized to address the following topics: High frequency a-periodic variability, Polarization, High z GRBs, Short GRBs, GRB-Supernovae association, Multi-wavelengths simultaneous photometry and rapid low dispersion spectroscopy. Abstract: During the last years, a number of telescopes and instruments have been dedicated to the follow-up of GRBs: recent studies of the prompt emission (see for instance GRB080319B) and of their afterglows, evidenced a series of phenomena that do not fit very well within the standard fireball model. In those cases, optical observations were fundamental to distinguish among different emission mechanisms and models. In particular, simultaneous observation in various optical filters became essential to understand the physics, and we discovered the need to have a detailed high time resolution follow up. Finally, recent observations of the polarization in GRB 090102 clearly indicate the presence of an ordered magnetic field favoring the electromagnetic outflows models. This is, however, only one case and, in order to detail properly the model, we need a bit of statistics. But, after the Swift launch, the average observed intensity of GRB afterglows showed to be lower than thought before. Robotic telescopes, as demonstrated by REM, ROTSE, TAROT, etc. (but see also the GROND set up) is clearly the winning strategy. Indeed, as we will also briefly discuss later on, the understanding of the prompt emission mechanism depends on the observations covering the first few hundreds seconds since the beginning of the event with high temporal resolution. To tackle these problems and track down a realistic model, we started the conceptual design and phase A study of a 4 meter class, fast-pointing telescope (40 sec on target), equipped with multichannel imagers, from Visible to Near Infrared (Codevisir/Pathos). In the study we explored all the different parts of the project, from the telescope to the instrumental suite to data managing and analysis, to the dome and site issue. Abstract: During the last years, a number of telescopes have been dedicated to the followup of the GRBs. But after the Swift launch, the average observed intensity of the GRBs showed to be lower than thought before. Our experience with the robotic 60cm REM telescope confirmed this evidence, with a large number of lost GRBs. Then, we proposed to study the feasibility of a 4m fast pointing class telescope, equipped with a multichannel imagers, from Visible to Near Infrared. In this paper, we present the main result of the feasibility study we performed so far.

Abstract: We present the concept and preliminary design of the Galileo OH Subtracted Spectrograph [GOHSS], a multifibre NIR spectrograph for faint objects. The instrument represents a collaboration between the Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge and the Observatories of Naples and Rome and will be a second-light instrument for the 3.6m Galileo telescope located on La Palma. The NIR spectrograph accomplishes OH night-sky suppression in a different way from the hardware solution used by both OHS (Maihara etal) and COHSI (Piche' et al). GOHSS provides a multiechelle design with software subtraction capable of yielding ~28 spectra in J+H bands at a spectral resolution R~3000. Abstract: SPHERE is an instrument designed and built by a consortium of French, German, Italian, Swiss and Dutch institutes in collaboration with ESO. The project is currently in its Phase B. The main goal of SPHERE is to gain at least one order of magnitude with respect to the present VLT AO facility (NACO) in the direct detection of faint objects very close to a bright star, especially giant extrasolar planets. Apart from a high Strehl ratio, the instrument will be designed to reduce the scattered light of the central bright star and subtract the residual speckle halo. Sophisticated post-AO capabilities are needed to provide maximum detectivity and possibly physical data on the putative planets. The Integral Field Spectrograph (IFS), one of the three scientific channels foreseen in the SPHERE design, is a very low resolution spectrograph (R~20) which works in the near IR (0.95-1.35 micron), an ideal wavelength range for the ground based detection of planetary features. Its goal is to suppress speckle to a contrast of 10^7, with a goal of 10^8, and at the same time provide spectral information in a field of view of about 1.5 x 1.5 arcsecs^2 in proximity of the target star.
